  1. We've been talking

  2. about practicing

  3. the way, right?

  4. This Jesus way, the

  5. way of apprenticeship

  6. that we are

  7. apprentices of Jesus,

  8. trying to follow him,

  9. do what he did, hang

  10. out with him, be with

  11. him, become like him

  12. in this whole thing we

  13. call being a disciple.

  14. Right?

  15. An apprentice

  16. of Jesus.

  17. We've looked at

  18. Sabbath and the idea

  19. of space and rest for

  20. spiritual renewal.

  21. We've talked

  22. about solitude.

  23. This idea of what Dax

  24. shot for the other

  25. night right before his

  26. daughter, so rudely

  27. interrupted with

  28. awesomeness, right?

  29. So cool.

  30. We've talked

  31. about prayer and

  32. we've spent time

  33. together in prayer

  34. and talked about

  35. the importance of.

  36. Communication,

  37. interaction with

  38. the Lord if we're

  39. gonna have a

  40. relationship with him.

  41. And community

  42. specifically being

  43. part of a faith

  44. community, like we're

  45. so used to church

  46. being a presentation

  47. and a show that

  48. if you hear this

  49. morning, and it was

  50. a whole lot of people

  51. talking together,

  52. sharing together,

  53. praying together,

  54. singing together.

  55. That's actually

  56. what church is

  57. supposed to be.

  58. But faith,

  59. community members,

  60. families, indi.

  61. Individuals, everyone

  62. being important to

  63. that whole, I mean,

  64. you guys, man, you

  65. guys exemplify that

  66. so many cool ways.

  67. We talked about

  68. scripture, how God's

  69. word brings life

  70. and truth and to

  71. marinate in that and

  72. make that a priority

  73. and how we live.

  74. Josh talked

  75. about fasting.

  76. That's why my

  77. earpiece was so messed

  78. up this morning.

  79. I was like, who's

  80. big ear was this in?

  81. Yeah, since then.

  82. So fasting, separating

  83. ourselves, saying no

  84. to our flesh, to say

  85. yes to the Lord and

  86. to get serious in

  87. relationship with him.

  88. And some of those.

  89. Prayer and fasting

  90. strategies.

  91. Pretty cool stuff.

  92. And then last week we

  93. experienced worship

  94. as a practice,

  95. though it wasn't

  96. really officially

  97. in the book as one.

  98. And I just wanna say

  99. what crazy generosity

  100. you guys, you're such,

  101. you're such a blessing

  102. to people and you

  103. don't even realize it.

  104. Like the George family

  105. was here and they

  106. usually played a lot

  107. of smaller churches

  108. and older churches

  109. and they said to each

  110. of, you know, several

  111. of us individually,

  112. just like the young

  113. people who were

  114. here, the teenagers,

  115. like sitting in

  116. that teenager row.

  117. We got.

  118. Jed and Scott

  119. and Jennifer.

  120. Wait, I don't know

  121. how that worked out,

  122. but, um, you know.

  123. Nice try, Scott.

  124. We can see you.

  125. Uh, yeah.

  126. It's good.

  127. I just didn't wanna

  128. go back and sit down

  129. after praying for Dax.

  130. I get it right,

  131. but you guys just

  132. being present and

  133. just being real

  134. followers of Jesus.

  135. Like when we did

  136. scripture, remember

  137. that we shared

  138. scriptures and, and

  139. really we had tons of

  140. teenagers and college

  141. students who stood up

  142. and shared scripture.

  143. What a cool

  144. testimony that was.

  145. Well, I've been

  146. telling you

  147. that matters.

  148. Right?

  149. And last Sunday,

  150. that family, the

  151. George family who was

  152. here, was just blown

  153. away by you guys.

  154. Your engagement

  155. and your heart

  156. for each other.

  157. Uh, Gary told me

  158. afterwards how much it

  159. was just like, it blew

  160. his mind that, that

  161. these Judah or uh,

  162. uh, Jonah said these

  163. people actually like,

  164. they want to be here.

  165. They like each other.

  166. I like Where you

  167. been going to church,

  168. bro, but yeah.

  169. Right.

  170. Like, you guys

  171. love each other

  172. and you do that.

  173. Well, here's what

  174. Gary sent me on

  175. the afternoon.

  176. He said, thank

  177. you Andy.

  178. We'll go to.

  179. What we'll

  180. go to church.

  181. I don't know

  182. what that means.

  183. Uh, your church

  184. family was amazing,

  185. so very supportive

  186. and encouraging.

  187. So good to see your

  188. beautiful wife.

  189. I agree with that.

  190. I was somewhat

  191. concerned about

  192. our musical style.

  193. But listen to what he

  194. says about you guys.

  195. He says, your church

  196. will go down in George

  197. History as one of the

  198. greatest experiences

  199. we've ever had.

  200. Pretty cool, huh?

  201. Pretty cool.

  202. Uh, we appreciate

  203. the opportunity

  204. and definitely pray

  205. for your church and

  206. your family now.

  207. What he didn't know

  208. at that time was that

  209. you guys like put in

  210. $950 of offering to

  211. them, and our church

  212. board matched a little

  213. bit of that to get

  214. 'em up to about 1500

  215. bucks just for coming.

  216. And they're just, it

  217. was just to support

  218. their ministry, right?

  219. Like just cool

  220. stuff you guys did.

  221. So this is what he

  222. sent me at 10 o'clock

  223. at night that night.

  224. The offering for the

  225. group was amazing.

  226. Cannot thank

  227. you enough.

  228. Then I can't

  229. count all the

  230. exclamation points.

  231. Just looked at it.

  232. We are in shock.

  233. Bless you for your

  234. generous gift.

  235. Can I just say this,

  236. like, when you honor

  237. God, he honors you.

  238. And when you bless

  239. those who are in your

  240. life and those who

  241. maybe spent their

  242. lives and maybe.

  243. Let's be honest, like

  244. probably the George

  245. Family Band isn't

  246. climbing the Christian

  247. charts anytime soon.

  248. And I don't know how

  249. effective Gary is

  250. in youth ministry

  251. right now, other

  252. than you should have

  253. seen all the kids

  254. watching the steel

  255. guitar and messing

  256. around after church.

  257. Right?

  258. But Gary loves,

  259. and you guys,

  260. you guys were.

  261. Just crazy generous

  262. in your hearts, in

  263. your engagement and in

  264. your giving, which is

  265. kind of cool because

  266. that is actually the

  267. practice that we were

  268. supposed to do last

  269. week was generosity.

  270. And I thought it

  271. was cool 'cause I

  272. didn't get a chance

  273. to preach about

  274. it, but I thought,

  275. you know what?

  276. Maybe we'll experience

  277. it and you guys

  278. blew it away.

  279. So thank you for

  280. being such a generous

  281. group of people

  282. because what you did,

  283. blessed people that

  284. they'll hold onto

  285. that forever, right.

  286. So we had some

  287. people come here

  288. recently to do that.

  289. Well, a couple years

  290. ago, doing that power

  291. lifting thing, right?

  292. And they were

  293. like, legendary.

  294. Legendary.

  295. Your people

  296. are legendary.

  297. Sometimes we forget

  298. how important it

  299. is to be people who

  300. really love and who

  301. really try to practice

  302. what it looks like

  303. to follow Jesus.

  304. So that's not a proud

  305. pet self on the back.

  306. It's just an

  307. affirmation that the

  308. journey that we're

  309. walking and the way

  310. that we're walking.

  311. Great job guys.

  312. How, how cool those

  313. changes eternity the

  314. way you guys love.

  315. Generosity is

  316. something you guys

  317. do really well.

  318. I said I was gonna

  319. mention something

  320. about this.

  321. We have these shoe

  322. boxes in the back,

  323. the Operation

  324. Christmas Child.

  325. Raise your hand if

  326. you've been a part

  327. of an operation

  328. Christmas child Box

  329. before in your life.

  330. They're all over

  331. the culture and

  332. all over the place.

  333. Super, super

  334. cool stuff.

  335. If you've never

  336. done it, man, find a

  337. kid like a grandkid

  338. or a nephew or a

  339. niece, not a random

  340. kid, but a kid in

  341. your family, right?

  342. And go to the dollar

  343. store and buy some

  344. stuff and stick it

  345. in one of these red

  346. and green boxes.

  347. You get a chance.

  348. To send these all

  349. over the world with

  350. the gospel in them.

  351. And man, the stories

  352. are mind blowing.

  353. It's a very simple

  354. act of generosity

  355. that quite honestly

  356. transforms all

  357. eternity for

  358. some people.

  359. It really,

  360. really does.

  361. We have a chance

  362. in the back to do

  363. some things with

  364. our college students

  365. and bless them.

  366. I am so proud of our

  367. college students in

  368. the way that they're

  369. standing in the midst

  370. of a really tough

  371. culture to navigate.

  372. And you guys get a

  373. chance to grab one of

  374. those little flyers,

  375. read a few things,

  376. and just find some

  377. ways to send them

  378. some encouragement.

  379. Lemme tell you when

  380. you're on the front

  381. lines of battling

  382. against ideology and

  383. the lies and deception

  384. of the enemy on the

  385. college campus to just

  386. get a crazy little

  387. care package from your

  388. church that says, we

  389. love you, you matter.

  390. You're part

  391. of our family.

  392. Like that's huge.

  393. Super huge.

  394. And it's not crazy

  395. hard to do does take

  396. a little act on our

  397. part, but that act of

  398. generosity matters.

  399. I wanna encourage you

  400. to plug into that and

  401. then that families of

  402. Hamilton County thing

  403. that's coming up.

  404. You're gonna hear lots

  405. of things as we build

  406. towards Christmas,

  407. but you guys, you guys

  408. were front page news

  409. in the way that you

  410. loved in that process.

  411. So amazing stuff.

  412. You guys get this

  413. practice of generosity

  414. and you do some really

  415. powerful things.

  416. Well, this morning I

  417. wanna talk a little

  418. bit about this

  419. hurricane he Helene,

  420. relief effort of

  421. generosity that some

  422. of you had a chance

  423. to be a part of.

  424. Then I have a couple

  425. things I want to say

  426. about generosity that

  427. I think are really

  428. important that I

  429. wanna leave you with.

  430. But if I can invite

  431. Sarah Navero and

  432. Melissa Zuber

  433. up here to the

  434. platform to join me.

  435. Sarah, when you

  436. stood up to share

  437. during sharing time,

  438. I was like, Uhuh,

  439. you're gonna lose

  440. your chance girl.

  441. Don't blow it.

  442. Right.

  443. You did good.

  444. You did good.

  445. Um, but I want to

  446. have a chance to just,

  447. yeah, thanks buddy.

  448. Unpack a couple things

  449. with these ladies and

  450. uh, we'll get you guys

  451. an awesome stool here.

  452. Sir.

  453. Alright ladies,

  454. you can have a

  455. seat right there.

  456. I'll snag this one.

  457. Thank you sir.

  458. We're gonna do

  459. something a little

  460. unique here for a few

  461. minutes in our sermon

  462. time and uh, I want

  463. to start, you guys

  464. can hold that thing.

  465. Thank you.

  466. I wanna start with

  467. this, uh, sorry I

  468. got so many things

  469. in my back pocket.

  470. Sorry.

  471. So.

  472. How many people

  473. know that there

  474. was a hurricane

  475. in North Carolina?

  476. Okay.

  477. Alright.

  478. So I pretty much

  479. everybody knows what's

  480. going on, right?

  481. And we've been a

  482. part of it in a lot

  483. of different ways.

  484. Uh, I would bet

  485. that everybody in

  486. here has had some.

  487. Uh, thing at work

  488. maybe, or maybe

  489. you were watching

  490. football and you

  491. texted something

  492. to Samaritan's

  493. Purse or, uh, to,

  494. uh, the Red Cross.

  495. Um, there's lots and

  496. lots of ways people

  497. have been giving,

  498. and I wanna, uh,

  499. just mention Raina

  500. was gonna be here

  501. this morning too,

  502. and then she was sick

  503. this morning and she

  504. was instrumental in

  505. helping us as a church

  506. do some connections.

  507. We had a chance on

  508. the Wednesday, I think

  509. you guys maybe were on

  510. the road, but a couple

  511. Wednesdays ago we had

  512. the church trailer

  513. open all day long.

  514. You guys brought

  515. tons of stuff,

  516. waters and medicines

  517. and all kinds of

  518. things, and we piled

  519. a whole layer into

  520. the church trailer.

  521. And then we, uh, took

  522. it down on Thursday

  523. to my school where

  524. I'm teaching at,

  525. and we loaded tons

  526. more stuff into it.

  527. We actually had to

  528. take two different

  529. trips to be able to

  530. get 'em just about

  531. a, a mile away to

  532. the Advanced Turf

  533. Solutions place.

  534. That was loading

  535. semis to take

  536. them down there.

  537. And we brought,

  538. I think together

  539. something like 10

  540. different pallets

  541. and they estimated

  542. somewhere between

  543. seven and $10,000

  544. worth of medicine

  545. and supplies that,

  546. uh, from our little

  547. combo here with the

  548. school and the church

  549. that we got to do.

  550. And Reyna was

  551. instrumental in

  552. getting us connected

  553. with them and uh,

  554. that was a really

  555. neat connection.

  556. We're gonna keep

  557. rolling with.

  558. I took all my

  559. students outside.

  560. And, uh, we loaded the

  561. trailers each class,

  562. and then we wrote

  563. notes of encouragement

  564. and scripture and

  565. prayers, and we got

  566. to send those directly

  567. to, uh, North Carolina

  568. to a hub where their

  569. general manager was

  570. working with the

  571. sheriff to distribute

  572. food and water and,

  573. uh, really cool

  574. impact kind of stuff.

  575. So excited about

  576. what you guys were

  577. a part of in that.

  578. And then there were

  579. other crazy people

  580. who loaded their car

  581. with stuff and headed

  582. east and, uh, you.

  583. How many you guys

  584. have ever been to an

  585. event with Sarah Naro?

  586. Like a youth thing or

  587. anything like that?

  588. How many you guys have

  589. ever gotten, you know,

  590. a couple pictures

  591. from Sarah, like a

  592. reel last night that

  593. I still can't find

  594. all of them and get

  595. through them, but, uh,

  596. Sarah is our official

  597. documentarian,

  598. which means that

  599. she documents

  600. everything, right?

  601. Like I made

  602. that word up.

  603. I don't think

  604. that's a wife.

  605. My wife is

  606. the same way.

  607. What's that?

  608. Your wife is

  609. the same way?

  610. My wife?

  611. Yeah.

  612. Yeah.

  613. I just maybe, yeah,

  614. that's probably fair.

  615. Okay, so.

  616. Also, I didn't even

  617. send you that many.

  618. I only sent you

  619. like less than a

  620. fourth of them.

  621. I was trying

  622. to be kind

  623. Josh,

  624. this one on perfect.

  625. Look at this.

  626. I'm gonna connect

  627. this and I'm gonna

  628. break that thing.

  629. I don't know why White

  630. Rock technology always

  631. breaks around here.

  632. You know what I mean?

  633. That's weird.

  634. It's almost like

  635. people drop stuff

  636. and break things.

  637. Okay.

  638. So you guys had a

  639. chance to go all

  640. the way to North

  641. Carolina and do

  642. some cool stuff.

  643. There's some

  644. pictures you sent.

  645. I didn't get a chance

  646. to really walk through

  647. all of them in a way

  648. that could put it

  649. together, but this is

  650. you guys just driving

  651. through what town?

  652. Swanno.

  653. Sowan Noah, which is

  654. really like, really

  655. close to Asheville.

  656. Okay.

  657. Real close

  658. to Asheville.

  659. Just mile after mile.

  660. I had to cut this

  661. off because there's

  662. no way to get it.

  663. It's like two minutes.

  664. Yeah.

  665. Just a ton of

  666. devastation

  667. everywhere you look.

  668. Just lots of,

  669. uh, suffering,

  670. destruction,

  671. and just so sad.

  672. You guys had a chance

  673. to connect with a

  674. number of people.

  675. I'm just gonna go

  676. through a couple

  677. of these and.

  678. Remind you of some

  679. of the folks you

  680. had a chance to kind

  681. of touch base with

  682. and uh, I'm just

  683. gonna stop us there.

  684. So, um, you guys

  685. had a heart to

  686. go do something.

  687. Walk us through

  688. like what was the

  689. inspiration to throw

  690. all that stuff in

  691. your car and just go,

  692. I've been thinking

  693. a lot about this.

  694. I think two things.

  695. Um, it's our DNA as

  696. white rockers, right?

  697. Your dad, he's

  698. a monster.

  699. He creates a monster

  700. in you, right?

  701. He's always said, when

  702. you squeeze a lemon,

  703. you get lemon juice,

  704. you get lemonade.

  705. Right?

  706. And I feel like

  707. the, the Bible talks

  708. about how out of the

  709. overflow of the heart,

  710. the mouth speaks, but

  711. I think out of the

  712. overflow of the heart,

  713. we are compelled to

  714. do good works unto

  715. the Lord, right?

  716. And so.

  717. Immediately I was

  718. like, I had PTO and

  719. I had spent the last

  720. Friday before, um,

  721. on PTO sitting on my

  722. butt at home doing

  723. absolutely nothing.

  724. And I thought, well,

  725. this is ridiculous.

  726. I have enough

  727. PTO to go for a

  728. week if I can.

  729. Um, why waste it?

  730. Why not do something

  731. that matters,

  732. um, for the Lord?

  733. Yeah.

  734. And then you reached

  735. out to Sarah, who's

  736. always reluctant

  737. to go help a.

  738. Major crisis, tragedy,

  739. like, you know,

  740. tornadoes or mercy.

  741. She's, she's

  742. rider die, she's

  743. my ride or die.

  744. So Jerry was like,

  745. you gotta find

  746. one other person.

  747. And you're like,

  748. no problem.

  749. I know, just

  750. get a call.

  751. So then she called

  752. you Sarah, or you

  753. guys were already at

  754. the same, you met in

  755. the grocery store,

  756. both picking stuff up

  757. and you're like, we

  758. should go together.

  759. Yeah.

  760. So, um, she sent me a

  761. text message and it's

  762. my heart to, I mean,

  763. I joke around and

  764. tell people like, I

  765. like disaster relief.

  766. Um, we both did

  767. Katrina many

  768. years ago, and.

  769. Um, I did Mayfield

  770. a few years ago with

  771. a lot of people here

  772. and, um, I don't

  773. know, I did tornado

  774. earlier this year.

  775. I just like that

  776. kind of stuff.

  777. Part of it's

  778. 'cause I'm nosy,

  779. but I'll come and work

  780. my tail off for you.

  781. No, seriously.

  782. Um, I love to get

  783. to know the people

  784. in the area and hear

  785. their stories, which,

  786. um, when we started

  787. serving with Katrina

  788. years ago, like,

  789. uh, that is such

  790. a huge part of it.

  791. Um.

  792. They say that no

  793. matter how much work

  794. there is to do, the

  795. most important thing

  796. you can do is stop

  797. and listen to their

  798. stories and let them

  799. tell you because they

  800. want to share it.

  801. And we are there

  802. to share the

  803. love of Christ.

  804. And that's what I love

  805. about like serving

  806. with Samaritan's Purse

  807. and stuff is just

  808. we know that we, you

  809. know, have the ability

  810. to share that nobody's

  811. gonna shut it down.

  812. It's expected

  813. of us and stuff.

  814. And so when she sent

  815. me a text message.

  816. Um, I was like,

  817. Mike, do you care?

  818. Not that I have to

  819. get my husband's

  820. permission

  821. necessarily, but

  822. honey are you

  823. lies back there?

  824. But you should

  825. right, Mike?

  826. You should.

  827. That's, yeah, but I

  828. mean, I don't wanna

  829. make it sound like

  830. he's this tyrant

  831. that's like, oh,

  832. you better ask me.

  833. You know, but I mean,

  834. he's just like, oh,

  835. here she goes again.

  836. Probably like,

  837. yeah, fine.

  838. Um, so I actually only

  839. had one paid day left

  840. at work, but I was

  841. like, I, you know.

  842. I, I just love

  843. doing this kind of

  844. stuff and it was a

  845. great opportunity.

  846. I love to travel and

  847. hang out with one of

  848. my very best friends.

  849. So, um, yeah,

  850. it was an honor.

  851. Seriously.

  852. So when she texted

  853. me, I was like, let

  854. me see what I can do.

  855. And then that morning,

  856. uh, when we were at

  857. church, I texted my

  858. boss and I said, can

  859. I have this time off?

  860. And she was like,

  861. approved, you know,

  862. like right away.

  863. So it was great.

  864. So when you guys got

  865. out there, you stayed

  866. at the Billy Graham

  867. resort, or not resort,

  868. the training center

  869. or something, the

  870. co training center.

  871. So God is good, right?

  872. Like.

  873. Typically when

  874. you're in these

  875. circumstances, you're

  876. staying in a church

  877. building like this.

  878. You're sleeping on

  879. the floor in the

  880. gym with a hundred

  881. other people, and

  882. you're showering

  883. in a trailer.

  884. So we had originally

  885. tried to go to Boone,

  886. North Carolina.

  887. Boone is the home of

  888. Samaritan's Purse.

  889. So that was a

  890. passion point for me.

  891. Sorry.

  892. Um, and it was booked

  893. and I was so bummed I

  894. was gritting my teeth.

  895. And so we got another

  896. text that another

  897. area opened up

  898. and I'm like, me?

  899. Okay, fine.

  900. And so I signed up

  901. and they gave you

  902. the details and they

  903. gave me the address

  904. and I looked it

  905. up and I was like.

  906. My Lanta and you guys

  907. are the two biggest

  908. Billy Graham junkies.

  909. There are.

  910. This is all know us.

  911. This was like

  912. bucket list place.

  913. You should look it up.

  914. It's beautiful.

  915. And so I could not

  916. even believe God's

  917. kindness because

  918. that wasn't our

  919. intent, right?

  920. No.

  921. No, not at all.

  922. Not at all.

  923. In fact, Sarah,

  924. you said something

  925. yesterday when we were

  926. talking just a little

  927. bit about, um, when

  928. we were talking about

  929. all of your pictures,

  930. uh, you mentioned

  931. something about, um,

  932. God's goodness when

  933. we go to give and yet

  934. what he does in us.

  935. No, I remember it.

  936. I try not to cry.

  937. Um, like Melissa said,

  938. when you go to serve

  939. a lot of the times

  940. in this capacity,

  941. you are not in the

  942. most comfortable

  943. of circumstances.

  944. You know, like

  945. I'm 53 years old.

  946. It's not fun to sleep

  947. on an air mattress

  948. or on the floor or

  949. anything like that,

  950. but you're willing

  951. to do it, right?

  952. You're willing,

  953. 'cause I'm coming

  954. to serve you.

  955. I wanna help you.

  956. I want to bring

  957. Jesus and hope and

  958. encouragement and

  959. love and all of that.

  960. And.

  961. Um, it was just

  962. astounding to us.

  963. I can speak, I

  964. know I can speak on

  965. behalf of both of us.

  966. When I say that what

  967. the Lord poured into

  968. us is so much bigger

  969. than what we were

  970. trying to do, I mean,

  971. we were trying to

  972. pour out and love

  973. on these communities

  974. and these people and

  975. just serving with

  976. this people that we

  977. got to serve with.

  978. Um, uh, just the

  979. place that we stayed

  980. in was amazing.

  981. We had our own room,

  982. we had our own shower.

  983. It was lovely and

  984. beautiful and Will

  985. Graham was there,

  986. which is Franklin

  987. Graham's son, and then

  988. Gigi Graham, which

  989. is Billy Graham's

  990. oldest daughter.

  991. And she was

  992. totally delightful.

  993. They're junkies,

  994. as you could tell.

  995. Yeah.

  996. Junkies so junky.

  997. Well, we had just

  998. researched his kids.

  999. 'cause I was like,

1000. I know he is gotta

  1001. have other kids.

  1002. We met Ruth

  1003. Graham years ago.

1004. We had her at our

  1005. church for an event.

1006. And so we had just

  1007. read about Gigi

1008. and I was like, oh.

  1009. Oh my gosh, isn't

  1010. that her over there?

1011. So it was so weird.

1012. But yeah, so just his,

  1013. like his extravagance

  1014. and like what he

1015. gives back to us when

  1016. we're obedient to him

1017. is more than I can

  1018. even put into words.

  1019. Like just where we

  1020. stayed, the people

  1021. that we served with

  1022. and met and the

  1023. blessings that we

  1024. got, the stories they

  1025. had, sharing time

  1026. in the evenings and.

  1027. Um, just I feel

  1028. like what he poured

  1029. back into us and

  1030. then the communities

  1031. that were trying

  1032. to like feed us.

  1033. Like there was one

  1034. picture of us, maybe

  1035. the one before this,

  1036. where we were with

  1037. three other people,

  1038. and those were some

1039. of the people in a

  1040. neighborhood called

  1041. Beacon Village.

  1042. And that neighborhood,

  1043. the water was up

  1044. in the houses, up

  1045. to the gutters.

  1046. So these people were

  1047. on their roofs and

  1048. they were crying for

  1049. help and neighbors

  1050. were saving them

  1051. from their kayaks.

  1052. And I mean, we

  1053. have a lot more

  1054. details about these

  1055. stories, but I mean.

  1056. They were setting

  1057. up tents and like

  1058. making hot dogs

  1059. and bringing food.

  1060. And I wanna, I want

  1061. Melissa to tell you

  1062. how they bless her

  1063. heart the last day

  1064. we were there because

1065. it made her cry and

  1066. it was really sweet.

  1067. Um, so we had

  1068. come, it was lunch

  1069. break, I don't

  1070. remember what day.

  1071. Walking up the hill.

  1072. It's totally dust

  1073. and dirt and they

  1074. had the tent and

  1075. hot dogs and drinks.

1076. And I was like, do

1077. you have a diet Coke?

  1078. I would do anything

  1079. for a Diet Coke.

  1080. And they're like,

  1081. oh no, we don't.

  1082. We're so sorry.

1083. Do you want us to

  1084. go to the store?

  1085. I'm like,

  1086. absolutely not.

  1087. You're not going to

  1088. the store like, I'm

  1089. here to serve you.

  1090. No big deal.

  1091. It's no big deal.

1092. So the next day we

  1093. come back to the

  1094. same neighborhood and

  1095. we're sitting down

  1096. and we're eating our

  1097. lunch, and somebody

1098. rolls up to me and

  1099. says they have Coke.

  1100. And I went to

  1101. the cooler.

  1102. I could not

  1103. believe it.

  1104. They had Diet Coke.

  1105. I grabbed a hold

  1106. of one of those

  1107. homeowners and

  1108. I just wept and

  1109. prayed over her.

  1110. Prayed a blessing

  1111. over her.

  1112. Those people are

  1113. people that don't

  1114. know Jesus, and I

  1115. don't know that they

  1116. wanna know Jesus.

  1117. I was like, you

  1118. are not gonna stop

  1119. me from playing a

  1120. blessing over you

  1121. over that simple act.

  1122. They went out of

  1123. their way that night

1124. to go get a Diet Coke

  1125. for their cooler.

  1126. It was incredible.

  1127. Super cool.

  1128. I, you know,

  1129. originally when we

  1130. were gonna do this,

  1131. I, I assumed we would

  1132. kind of walk through

  1133. some of the, what

1134. you did and all those

  1135. other pieces, but

  1136. really I wanted people

1137. to get a chance to

  1138. hear a your hearts.

  1139. For why you went.

  1140. Mm-hmm.

  1141. And ultimately,

  1142. like the blessing

1143. that God gave as you

  1144. practiced generosity.

  1145. You can't outgive God.

  1146. You can't even come

  1147. close to trying

  1148. to match His level

  1149. of generosity.

  1150. And generosity,

  1151. as you said, comes

  1152. out of our heart.

  1153. Right.

  1154. It's, it's part of it.

  1155. It's part of

  1156. the DNA who we

  1157. are as a church.

1158. It shows up all the

1159. time in the way you

  1160. love each other.

  1161. I was with somebody

  1162. this week here locally

  1163. yesterday who's trying

  1164. to figure out how

1165. to get a couple cars

1166. working so we can find

  1167. some people to give

1168. 'em to, you know, like

  1169. those are just hearts

  1170. of generosity, hearts

1171. of how can I serve,

1172. how can I love, how

1173. can I help and make

  1174. an impact for people?

  1175. And when we meet

  1176. people's needs,

  1177. it opens up the

  1178. door for us to

  1179. share some really

  1180. significant stuff.

  1181. Yeah.

  1182. Well, I have a

  1183. couple things I

  1184. wanna say about.

  1185. Generosity.

1186. And I know you guys

  1187. didn't even get to

  1188. share a tiny bit.

  1189. Can I share?

  1190. Yes, you may.

  1191. I do wanna share.

  1192. Yes, you may.

  1193. If you have something

  1194. you wanna share,

  1195. it's too Sarah.

  1196. I do.

  1197. I wanna share,

  1198. um, you know, as

  1199. Andy spoke of your

  1200. generosity towards

  1201. the family last week,

  1202. I am deeply moved

  1203. by your generosity.

  1204. Um.

  1205. I don't know

  1206. if he was gonna

  1207. share this or not.

  1208. The missions board,

  1209. because of your

  1210. donations, was able

1211. to send, um, us with

  1212. some money to buy

  1213. supplies to fill

  1214. our car, which was

  1215. absolutely amazing.

  1216. And you gave

  1217. me the means to

  1218. do what I love.

  1219. You were the hands

  1220. and feet of Jesus.

  1221. I couldn't have gone,

  1222. I couldn't have done

1223. what we'd done if it

  1224. wasn't for your giving

  1225. and your kindness.

1226. So I just am deeply,

  1227. deeply moved.

  1228. By your generosity.

1229. Um, and as Sarah said

  1230. to many people, you

  1231. can give people stuff.

  1232. I was gonna say,

  1233. you can give people

  1234. stuff, right?

  1235. You can give them

  1236. diapers, you can

  1237. give them water.

  1238. That means nothing in

  1239. the light of eternity.

  1240. Right?

  1241. It's what you, it's

  1242. what you tell them.

  1243. It's what you

  1244. give them to

  1245. save their soul.

1246. And, and this gave us

1247. the means to do that.

1248. You know, I can give

1249. you a case of water

1250. and I can tell you

  1251. about the hope that

1252. I have in Jesus that

  1253. is bigger, that water

  1254. will disappear, but

  1255. there's living water.

1256. So I just thank you

  1257. from the bottom of

  1258. my heart for your

  1259. generosity, for

  1260. helping me to have

1261. the means to do what

  1262. I love and yeah.

1263. You good if I preach

  1264. it a little bit

1265. or do you need to

  1266. say something too?

  1267. Well, I concur

  1268. with Melissa.

1269. It was a true honor

  1270. and blessing and

  1271. uh, we definitely

  1272. want to go back.

1273. Um, we had said we

  1274. wanted to take people

1275. with us, but the thing

  1276. is, is there were

  1277. so many volunteers

  1278. down there that the,

  1279. at one point they

  1280. had to turn away.

  1281. The day volunteers,

  1282. the ones that were

1283. local to the area that

  1284. wanted to just come

  1285. serve for the day.

1286. Kinda like what I did

  1287. earlier this year.

  1288. Uh, we did it

  1289. and Alexis did it

  1290. too over in, um,

  1291. Winchester, Indiana,

  1292. but they have day

  1293. volunteers and they

1294. had to turn 'em down,

  1295. but we definitely

  1296. want to go back.

  1297. So, um, they're gonna

  1298. need help for years.

  1299. I, we cannot even

  1300. begin with pictures

  1301. or anything to

  1302. describe to you.

  1303. Devastation.

  1304. It's apocalyptic.

  1305. I mean, it's insane.

1306. I mean, the video just

  1307. showed you one little

  1308. tiny piece and that's

  1309. not, we didn't even

1310. see hardly any of it.

  1311. So, um, we really

  1312. appreciate your

  1313. support and, um, it

  1314. is truly something

1315. that we love and we

  1316. encourage you to go

  1317. out and serve also.

  1318. Yeah.

  1319. And we'll be

  1320. doing more.

  1321. You know,

  1322. there's a lot of.

  1323. Touch points.

1324. Uh, Rena took a load

  1325. of stuff out, you

  1326. know, to some folks

  1327. and others in here

1328. have been a part of

  1329. doing different things

  1330. with different groups

  1331. and, uh, it's gonna

  1332. be opportunities

  1333. galore to give.

  1334. And what's crazy

  1335. cool is that, I

  1336. mean, it's funny,

  1337. Melissa's blessed

  1338. by your generosity.

  1339. Uh, the people

  1340. are blessed by

  1341. their generosity.

  1342. Then you were

  1343. blessed by those

  1344. people's generosity.

  1345. I dunno if you

  1346. notice this, but

  1347. when you live.

  1348. In a state of

  1349. generosity, it

  1350. just makes a mess

  1351. of everything.

  1352. It's just generosity

  1353. all over the

  1354. place, right?

  1355. All over every angle

  1356. is generosity here,

  1357. generosity there.

  1358. I'm too blessed,

  1359. I'm too blessed.

  1360. I, you know, it's

  1361. just everywhere.

  1362. Like what a cool

  1363. picture of the love

  1364. of God lived out

  1365. through generosity in

1366. the way that we love

  1367. and serve and give.

  1368. And here's the scary

  1369. part about generosity,

  1370. is often we think

  1371. I'm afraid to give

1372. or I'm afraid to let

  1373. go and we receive.

  1374. Ridiculously so much

  1375. more than we ever

  1376. give, and yet we

  1377. still are reluctant.

  1378. And that's usually

  1379. the enemy trying to

  1380. say to us, don't,

  1381. don't, don't, don't,

  1382. don't, don't, don't.

  1383. You'll be sorry.

  1384. And instead you're

  1385. never, sorry.

  1386. You're excited

  1387. and thrilled.

  1388. Um, so cool stuff.

  1389. Well, if you guys

  1390. wanna hear more from

  1391. Sarah and Melissa,

1392. I bet you they would

1393. love to talk to you.

  1394. And if you want

  1395. to sit in a.

  1396. Coffee lounge

  1397. somewhere and watch

  1398. Sarah flip through

  1399. a billion photos

  1400. and talk about 'em.

  1401. You're invited right

1402. to do that as well.

  1403. Sure.

  1404. So, hey, big

  1405. round applause.

  1406. These ladies being

1407. willing to sit up here

1408. with me for a minute.

  1409. Thank you gals

  1410. very much.

  1411. Maybe I swap and

  1412. take this real quick,

  1413. Austin, because I

  1414. just wanna say a

  1415. couple quick things

  1416. and then we'll get

  1417. outta your way.

  1418. 'cause I know this.

  1419. Morning featured

  1420. a lot of really

  1421. good speakers and

  1422. communicators who

  1423. weren't me, which is

  1424. pretty special because

1425. you guys have a lot to

  1426. say about some really

  1427. important stuff.

1428. But I wanna just touch

  1429. on this little aspect

  1430. of generosity with you

1431. on our way out, and

  1432. it's this something

1433. I like to call the

  1434. posture of generosity.

  1435. And I feel a little

  1436. bit, you know that

  1437. phrase like you're

  1438. preaching to the

  1439. choir, which means

  1440. like you're just

  1441. talking to everybody

  1442. who already gets it.

  1443. Maybe that's

  1444. the case, but.

  1445. We can always be

  1446. reminded and mindful

  1447. of how to communicate

  1448. to others that, which

1449. is a value to us too.

1450. So let me just share

  1451. this thought with you.

  1452. I love this image

  1453. when I think

  1454. about generosity.

  1455. 'cause generosity

  1456. really is just

  1457. living life with an

  1458. open hand to say,

  1459. God, everything I

  1460. have is yours, God.

  1461. Nothing in my life.

  1462. Nothing in my life

1463. is off limits to you.

1464. When we live in a

  1465. clasped hand and a

  1466. closed fist kind of

  1467. way towards God, when

  1468. we're holding onto

  1469. our stuff, holding

  1470. onto our possessions,

  1471. our time, our energy,

  1472. our resources, and

  1473. we grab that stuff

  1474. and hold it tight.

  1475. Look at what

  1476. I'm really doing

  1477. to God, right?

  1478. But shaking my fist

  1479. at the creator of

  1480. all the universe as

  1481. I hold tightly to

  1482. that which I possess.

1483. This is a picture of

  1484. what generosity looks

1485. like, and I think the

  1486. visual of the hand

  1487. posture of generosity.

  1488. A picture really, as

  1489. Melissa touched on

  1490. of the heart posture

  1491. of generosity.

1492. 'cause if we can live

  1493. open-handed towards

  1494. God and towards our

  1495. neighbor and towards

  1496. others, our heart is

  1497. open towards God and

  1498. towards our neighbor

  1499. and towards others.

  1500. But when we live

  1501. with a closed fist

  1502. towards other people

  1503. and towards the Lord,

  1504. man is a picture

  1505. of the hardness.

  1506. Of our hearts

  1507. right, that we're

  1508. locked down.

1509. So do this real quick

  1510. with your hands.

  1511. If you would please.

  1512. Just, if you got

  1513. one, that's fine.

  1514. If you're one-armed

  1515. person, totally cool.

  1516. Hold your hand

  1517. out like this.

  1518. Turn the person

  1519. next to you and

  1520. say, this is what

  1521. generosity looks like.

  1522. Nice.

  1523. Don't slap 'em

  1524. in the face.

  1525. Just hold your

  1526. hand out open.

  1527. That's, that's

  1528. the deal.

  1529. I want to take

  1530. you over to this

  1531. chapter real quick in

  1532. Leviticus and mention

  1533. something about the

  1534. heart of our God.

1535. I dunno if you know

  1536. the old fashioned

  1537. word, gleaning.

  1538. How many of you

  1539. guys use the word

  1540. gleaning this week

  1541. in a conversation

  1542. with someone?

  1543. Oh, really?

  1544. Yeah.

  1545. I'm not gonna

  1546. call you on that.

  1547. How many of you

  1548. guys have heard

  1549. the word, uh,

  1550. Gleaners Food Bank?

  1551. Oh, maybe it's

  1552. all tied, right?

  1553. Very nice.

  1554. So in Leviticus, we

1555. see the heart of our

1556. God in some of the

  1557. ways that he calls

  1558. his people to live.

  1559. Check this out.

  1560. I'll go through

  1561. this just real

  1562. fast, but don't

  1563. miss this picture.

  1564. Leviticus 23, verse

    Leviticus 23:22

  1565. 22 says, when you

  1566. reap the harvest

  1567. of your land.

  1568. When you reap the

  1569. harvest of your

1570. land, do not reap the

  1571. very edges of your

  1572. field or gather the

  1573. gleanings that which

1574. is left over, or that

  1575. you missed or that

  1576. fell off the wagon.

  1577. Do not, instead leave

1578. them for the poor and

  1579. the foreigner, those

  1580. residing among you.

  1581. I am the Lord

  1582. your God.

  1583. So when the Israelites

  1584. planted and harvested

  1585. their food, they went

  1586. through the fields.

  1587. They were supposed

  1588. to leave whatever

  1589. they missed on

  1590. that first path.

  1591. In fact, Deuteronomy

  1592. says this even

  1593. clearer in these

  1594. three verses, verse

  1595. 19 of chapter 24.

  1596. Therefore, you, it

  1597. says this when you're

  1598. harvesting in your

  1599. field and you overlook

  1600. a sheath, right?

  1601. I bundled up some

  1602. grain, I stacked it.

  1603. We came through

  1604. with the wagon, we

  1605. threw it all on.

  1606. I look back and I'm

1607. like, oh no, I left

  1608. a bundle of wheat.

  1609. I may I need

  1610. to go back.

  1611. Grab that.

  1612. No, do not go

  1613. back to get it.

  1614. Leave it for the

  1615. father or the

  1616. foreigner and the

  1617. fatherless and the

  1618. widow so that they

  1619. could come and

  1620. they could gather.

1621. 'cause if you were a,

  1622. if you were fatherless

  1623. or a widow, you

  1624. didn't have property

  1625. and you couldn't

  1626. raise your own food

  1627. and you couldn't

  1628. support yourself.

  1629. And so God created

  1630. a system where

  1631. people who didn't

  1632. have could go out.

  1633. They could work to

  1634. get some food and

  1635. they could gather

  1636. to have some food.

  1637. And the system was

  1638. built not so that

  1639. people could choke

  1640. every dollar and every

  1641. moment or every, uh,

  1642. resource and asset

  1643. outta their field, but

  1644. instead be generous

  1645. so that others would

  1646. have an opportunity

1647. so that the Lord, your

  1648. God may bless you.

1649. And boy does he bless

  1650. when we are generous.

  1651. When you beat

  1652. the olives from

  1653. your trees.

  1654. Do not go over

  1655. the branches

  1656. a second time.

  1657. Leave.

  1658. What remains for

  1659. the foreigner,

  1660. the fatherless,

  1661. and the widow.

1662. You can shake it out

  1663. Once, man, let's go.

  1664. But then you leave

1665. it alone so that the

  1666. fatherless and the

  1667. widow could come.

  1668. When you harvest

  1669. the grapes in your

  1670. vineyard, do not go

  1671. over the vines again,

  1672. but leave them,

  1673. but remains for the

  1674. foreigner, the alien,

  1675. so they can come.

  1676. God built a system

  1677. of generosity.

  1678. Now, notice in that

  1679. system, the people who

  1680. didn't have the poor.

  1681. They definitely

  1682. had to, definitely

1683. had to go and do a

  1684. little work, do a

  1685. little labor, right?

  1686. It wasn't just endless

  1687. handout kind of

1688. stuff, but it was an

  1689. opportunity to receive

1690. and God tells us that

1691. we reap what we sow.

  1692. That's a beautiful

  1693. picture of what

  1694. Melissa and Sarah

1695. got a chance to do.

  1696. Raina, all of you

1697. guys were a part of

  1698. all that process.

  1699. You had a chance

1700. to to sow some good

  1701. things in generosity.

  1702. And you always

  1703. reap in abundance.

  1704. You always harvest

  1705. so much more than

1706. you put in because of

1707. how good our God is.

  1708. It's a simple picture.

  1709. Empty hands, empty

  1710. hands before the Lord.

  1711. Everything in my hand

  1712. is his, and that's

  1713. what that practice of

  1714. generosity looks like.

  1715. So I'd encourage you

  1716. to think about living

  1717. your life open-handed

  1718. as you navigate

  1719. the days ahead.

  1720. Because here's the

  1721. other crazy part, when

  1722. you hold your hand

1723. open to God like this.

  1724. It's a lot easier for

1725. him to fill it than

  1726. when you sit like

  1727. this towards God.

  1728. So let's live

  1729. with open hands.

  1730. Everything is his

  1731. being generous

  1732. with everything

1733. that he puts in it.

  1734. And man, you're

  1735. probably gonna have

1736. to use both hands and

  1737. maybe your shirt to

  1738. hold all the blessings

  1739. that he pours out

  1740. as his people are

  1741. faithful to him.

  1742. Let's pray.

  1743. Father, thank you so

  1744. much for this morning,

  1745. the sharing the

  1746. opportunity to hear

  1747. from so many people

  1748. all the different ways

  1749. that you're at work.

  1750. All the different ways

  1751. that you are blessing

  1752. and sustaining and

  1753. just being present

  1754. in the midst of

  1755. where we're walking.

  1756. Thank you for folks

  1757. who went and served

  1758. in the hurricane

  1759. relief just a

  1760. couple weeks ago.

  1761. Thank you for the

  1762. folks who gave, Lord,

1763. I pray that you would

  1764. bless all of it.

1765. And Lord, I pray that

1766. you give us eyes to

  1767. see and as things

  1768. are tough financially

  1769. and difficult in our

  1770. world and stressful.

  1771. Lord, help us not

  1772. to close our fist.

1773. Help us not to clasp

1774. hard and hold on and

  1775. deny generosity, but

  1776. instead to just live

  1777. open-handed to the

  1778. whole world around

  1779. us, and trust you

1780. to meet all of our

1781. needs as we look to

  1782. the needs of others.

1783. We love you and we

  1784. thank you, Lord for

  1785. your encouragement

  1786. and your truth, and

1787. help us walk in and I

  1788. pray in Jesus' name.

  1789. Amen.
