  1. Well, I dunno if

  2. you noticed outside.

  3. Alright,

  4. that's enough.

  5. It is cold outside.

  6. You guys notice

  7. that like we are

  8. in the midst of a

  9. winter wonderland

  10. here in Indiana.

  11. And if you're like

  12. me, you are wondering

  13. when it's gonna

  14. get over, right?

  15. Like I'm good,

  16. I'm good.

  17. I've had just

  18. enough snow.

  19. Uh, like when that

  20. first flake fell,

  21. you know, probably

  22. in December I was

  23. probably good, but

  24. I'm done shoveling,

  25. salting, and uh,

  26. it is not any fun.

  27. Winter wonderland

  28. makes me crazy.

  29. In fact, we've had

  30. calls this week

  31. to bring back.

  32. The Blake Ter White

  33. Rock's official.

  34. Yeah.

  35. Official snow depth

  36. gauge that we, it

  37. created years ago

  38. and, uh, tried to bury

  39. Derrick in the snow.

  40. It was pretty fun.

  41. If you don't know

  42. about that, I'm

  43. sure that, uh, we

  44. could reenact that

  45. today after church.

  46. Derrick would be

  47. happy to do that,

  48. I'm sure to do that.

  49. But Winter Wonderland,

  50. how many of you

  51. guys really love a

  52. winter wonderland

  53. kind of vibe?

  54. Like, just love it.

  55. Right.

  56. Okay.

  57. Okay.

  58. That's interesting.

  59. So the four of you

  60. are gonna join me

  61. on the shoveling

  62. team after church.

  63. It's gonna be great.

  64. I am not a huge fan

  65. of which it's probably

  66. because I got to spend

  67. the coldest winter

  68. in the history of

  69. Minnesota, at least

  70. on record back in

  71. 1996 where it hit 67

  72. below zero and for an

  73. entire week, the high

  74. never got above the

  75. negative teens and

  76. at like zero degrees,

  77. we were outside in

  78. t-shirts going, this

  79. is amazing, right?

  80. 67 below.

  81. That's stupid cold.

  82. Just stupid

  83. cold, right?

  84. I was talking to

  85. the Lord, I was

  86. like, man, Jesus.

  87. I could, like, I

  88. could flip burgers in

  89. Florida for you and

  90. make a difference if I

  91. could just get out of

  92. this state right now.

  93. Please.

  94. Winter is not my

  95. favorite season.

  96. In fact, it's the

  97. coldest of all the

  98. seasons and it's

  99. the darkest of

  100. all the seasons.

  101. We have people who

  102. talk a lot about,

  103. you know, seasonal

  104. depression, right?

  105. And it has a

  106. lot to do with.

  107. Uh, less sunlight

  108. and some good things

  109. that come from God's

  110. creation of sunlight.

  111. And you get up in the

  112. morning in the dark

  113. and then you come

  114. home in the dark and

  115. then you sit in your

  116. house in the dark.

  117. Okay, fair enough.

  118. Fair enough.

  119. Stan at Tina don't

  120. have any lights

  121. at their house.

  122. Guys just want

  123. you to know.

  124. That makes it a

  125. little awkward but

  126. romantic still.

  127. That's good.

  128. That's good.

  129. Yeah.

  130. A little candlelight

  131. at staying at

  132. Tina's house.

  133. But winter is a season

  134. that feels a little

  135. dead sometimes it

  136. feels pretty dormant,

  137. pretty desolate.

  138. You know, the earth

  139. is kind of like

  140. we're taking a break

  141. for a while, right?

  142. We're not gonna

  143. grow stuff.

  144. The animals tend to

  145. find ways to hide out.

  146. Some just sleep

  147. the whole time.

  148. Some of you have

  149. thought to yourself,

  150. if only God would make

  151. me a bear, this would

  152. be a great season.

  153. Hibernation just

  154. one long quarter

  155. of a year.

  156. Nap sounds

  157. really appealing.

  158. Winter is not always

  159. the most encouraging

  160. time and it's always

  161. funny to me because

  162. you know, that crazy

  163. toothbrush was like

  164. a January kickoff.

  165. We had the big let's

  166. go strapped all over

  167. the back wall for like

  168. six months and try to

  169. do things in January

  170. that are inspiring

  171. and encouraging.

  172. And part of that is

  173. 'cause we're kicking

  174. off a new year and

  175. there's all this

  176. new whatever, but

  177. most of us are like,

  178. let's just bundle

  179. up, call it good,

  180. and let's talk in

  181. March, maybe April.

  182. Right?

  183. I just wanna be left

  184. alone and hibernate

  185. and I get that.

  186. Well I was looking in

  187. Ephesians this week

  188. and Ephesians chapter

  189. one, verses 18 and 19,

  190. there's uh, and I'll

  191. probably go on, we'll

  192. see, but at least

  193. 18 and 19, the first

  194. part of that verse,

  195. there's this really

  196. neat kind of, uh.

  197. I don't know,

  198. encouragement that

  199. Paul is praying over

  200. the church in Ephesus

  201. and Paul is sharing

  202. this as a prayer for

  203. the people who are

  204. following Jesus in

  205. the church, Ephesus.

  206. But it's intended for

  207. all of the churches

  208. and not just the

  209. churches of Paul's

  210. day, but for you and

  211. I that this would

  212. be the prayer and

  213. really the response

  214. to the prayer of the

  215. encouragement and hope

  216. that Paul offers here

  217. to the church and that

  218. Jesus really offers

  219. to his people and

  220. Paul calls us to that.

  221. So I wanna share with

  222. you this little prayer

  223. that Paul prays over

  224. the church, and I've

  225. been praying it over

  226. you guys this week,

  227. and it's something

  228. that I want to kind of

  229. keep doing in January

  230. as a prayer for us

  231. as his people that

  232. we would step into

  233. this and hopefully

  234. in the midst of a

  235. cold wintery day and

  236. season, you might find

  237. some encouragement in

  238. God's word for you.

  239. Ephesians one 18 says

  240. this, I ask that the

  241. eyes of your heart.

  242. May be enlightened so

  243. that you may know the

  244. hope of his calling,

  245. the riches of his

  246. glorious inheritance

  247. in the saints and the

  248. surpassing greatness

  249. of his power to us who

  250. believe when you're

  251. feeling dark, when

  252. you're feeling gloomy,

  253. when you're feeling

  254. a little despairing.

  255. This is a great

  256. section of scripture

  257. to just sit and

  258. marinate in the

  259. hope of his calling,

  260. the riches of his

  261. glorious inheritance,

  262. surpassing greatness

  263. of his power.

  264. Some pretty

  265. epic stuff.

  266. So let's unpack

  267. this just a little

  268. bit together.

  269. I ask that the eyes

  270. of your heart may

  271. be enlightened.

  272. I love this

  273. phrase, eyes of

  274. your heart, right?

  275. Like physiologically.

  276. Let me ask you,

  277. scholars and

  278. scientists out there,

  279. where are the eyes of

  280. your heart located?

  281. It's one of my

  282. favorite Hardy's

  283. commercials.

  284. The chicken.

  285. Do you remember that

  286. when the chickens

  287. pureeing on the

  288. stage and they're

  289. showing all this

  290. and they're talking

  291. about great deals

  292. and they just say.

  293. Where are the nuggets

  294. on this Chicken?

  295. Chickens don't have

  296. nuggets, right?

  297. It's kind of that

  298. whole vibe, right?

  299. Can I tell you that

  300. hearts don't have

  301. eyeballs, right?

  302. So this is a weird

  303. picture in the

  304. language here,

  305. that Paul uses the

  306. eyes of your heart.

  307. Now he's not

  308. talking about your

  309. physical eyes.

  310. And I think that's

  311. really important.

  312. 'cause he doesn't

  313. say, I hope you

  314. can see, right?

  315. Because here's the

  316. thing, sometimes.

  317. Our physical

  318. circumstances and

  319. the life around

  320. us, man, sometimes

  321. it's deceptive.

  322. Sometimes the things

  323. that we see are the

  324. things that actually

  325. discourage us and

  326. redirect us away from

  327. the truth and the

  328. hope that's in Christ.

  329. Do we put our eyes

  330. sometimes on our

  331. circumstances?

  332. Instead of our savior.

  333. And in so doing,

  334. we live hopeless

  335. and discouraged and

  336. despairing and afraid

  337. and weary, and fill

  338. in the blank with

  339. a ton of negative

  340. terms and phrases

  341. and concepts, right?

  342. Because apart from

  343. keeping our eyes fixed

  344. on Jesus, this world

  345. around us is filled

  346. with a whole lotta

  347. dark stuff, negative

  348. stuff, discouraging

  349. stuff, right?

  350. And the physical

  351. eyes sometimes might

  352. deceive you if all

  353. you're looking at is

  354. your circumstances.

  355. Because we serve a

  356. God who's so much

  357. bigger than our

  358. circumstances, and

  359. oftentimes even uses

  360. the circumstances to

  361. make us, to break us,

  362. to change us, and to

  363. mold us more into who

  364. he wants us to be.

  365. And sometimes we

  366. see those things

  367. and we run from him.

  368. So I love this

  369. picture that Paul

  370. uses here of the

  371. eyes of your heart.

  372. Because I think

  373. that's a different

  374. place than just

  375. the physical eyes.

  376. Paul's really talking

  377. here in the language

  378. about the perception

  379. of your heart, what

  380. your heart perceives,

  381. and I also think it's

  382. cool that we kind of

  383. focus on heart just a

  384. little bit because is

  385. it possible given the

  386. world we live in, the

  387. situations you face,

  388. the circumstances

  389. of your life that

  390. you might look at

  391. with your physical

  392. eyes, is it possible

  393. that at times your

  394. heart can become a

  395. little calloused?

  396. It can become a little

  397. numb, can become

  398. a little hardened

  399. towards things, and

  400. the perceptions of

  401. your heart might be

  402. consumed with a whole

  403. lot of things that

  404. aren't really what

  405. God wants your heart

  406. to be focused on.

  407. Maybe sometimes

  408. we're visually on

  409. the outside looking

  410. the part, it's gonna

  411. rhyme, but on the

  412. inside we got an

  413. issue with our heart.

  414. Sorry about that.

  415. Um, we're looking

  416. on the outside,

  417. all put together.

  418. But Jesus knows the

  419. heart, right and

  420. out of the heart.

  421. Come what we're really

  422. about, what we really

  423. love, what we really

  424. care about, what we're

  425. really sold out to.

  426. And this isn't

  427. just about looking

  428. the part man.

  429. This is about our

  430. hearts being engaged

  431. and our hearts

  432. being perceptive.

  433. In the language here,

  434. it has this idea

  435. of our mind, our

  436. understanding that

  437. our spirit, everything

  438. about us, would be

  439. perceiving this truth.

  440. Right?

  441. In the Greek word

  442. here, this, uh,

  443. oh, let's talk

  444. enlightened.

  445. Sorry, I'll jump

  446. ahead to this one.

  447. Enlightened has

  448. this cool image of

  449. illumination, right?

  450. That our heart's eye,

  451. if you will, would

  452. perceive illumination,

  453. light, that it would

  454. be lit up so that we

  455. can see the truth.

  456. In the midst of what's

  457. going on around us.

  458. And what's cool

  459. in this Greek word

  460. here is light is not

  461. just sort of this

  462. random thing, light

  463. in the midday, it's

  464. in contrast is how

  465. this word gets used.

  466. So it's specifically

  467. light in the midst of

  468. darkness, which is a

  469. really cool picture

  470. that our hearts

  471. would be illuminated

  472. in the midst.

  473. Of the darkness,

  474. right in the midst

  475. of a dark season.

  476. Maybe.

  477. Maybe it's not just,

  478. uh, weather related.

  479. Maybe it's a metaphor

  480. of a hard season

  481. in your life or a

  482. difficult circumstance

  483. or situation.

  484. You're facing

  485. hardships of

  486. all kinds.

  487. There's darkness that

  488. surrounds us, right?

  489. We live in a fallen

  490. world where there's

  491. sin and destruction

  492. and decay, and it's

  493. not how it's gonna

  494. be at the big finale.

  495. Trust me, it's gonna

  496. be awesome, right?

  497. That's what he

  498. promises us.

  499. But we have

  500. to navigate

  501. some darkness.

  502. And Paul's prayer

  503. for his people.

  504. My prayer for us as

  505. a church is that the

  506. eyes of our heart,

  507. our understanding,

  508. our mind, our spirit

  509. would perceive through

  510. the light that God

  511. gives and be able

  512. to see the truth

  513. that he has for us.

  514. I love this image

  515. of light and

  516. dark contrast.

  517. I dunno if you're

  518. a big fan of, um,

  519. the Gospel of John

  520. Joel's been teaching

  521. it in his class and,

  522. uh, always defaults

  523. to that 'cause

  524. it's Well, awesome.

  525. And uh, there's

  526. an awesome picture

  527. in the first.

  528. A chapter of John

  529. where the scripture

  530. says, the light shines

  531. in the darkness and

  532. the darkness has

  533. not overcome it.

  534. You know why?

  535. It hasn't overcome it?

  536. 'cause it cannot.

  537. 'cause.

  538. It cannot.

  539. It's more powerful.

  540. The light of God's

  541. truth and his love.

  542. It's more powerful

  543. than the darkness

  544. around us, and no

  545. matter where your

  546. heart finds itself.

  547. Man, God wants to

  548. shine the light of

  549. truth and life and

  550. hope into that space

  551. to illuminate and

  552. remind you who he is,

  553. who you are in him

  554. as his child, right?

  555. And that you

  556. might know.

  557. And the actual Greek

  558. word in enlightened

  559. is really cool.

  560. It's, uh, it's,

  561. uh, fotizo, which

  562. I love this.

  563. It means.

  564. Make to see, it's

  565. almost this word

  566. here, like I'm not

  567. paying attention.

  568. No, you're gonna be

  569. made to see, look

  570. at the light, right?

  571. Like, like it's

  572. not that the Holy

  573. Spirit grabs your

  574. face and brings you

  575. to the sunshine,

  576. but it's kind of

  577. that image of may.

  578. In Paul's most deepest

  579. love for his friends,

  580. may the Holy Spirit

  581. grab you by the collar

  582. and spin you around

  583. and stare you into

  584. the light so that

  585. you can see right?

  586. Be illuminated.

  587. Stop looking at

  588. the darkness.

  589. Stop looking at the

  590. stuff around you.

  591. Get your gaze

  592. fixed on the truth,

  593. on the light.

  594. So he says, the

  595. eyes of your heart

  596. that they may

  597. be enlightened.

  598. Why?

  599. To what purpose?

  600. So that you may know.

  601. So that you may

  602. know, and man, I

  603. love this word.

  604. No, this is a really

  605. deep, powerful word.

  606. This is not just

  607. knowledge right now.

  608. If we were watching

  609. some kind of like TV

  610. station show, whatever

  611. your Hulu bingeing,

  612. what you're gonna

  613. hear about 27 sexual

  614. innuendos in the

  615. time I started this.

  616. So I might as

  617. well talk about

  618. sex for a minute.

  619. This word no is the

  620. biblical word for

  621. Adam, knew his wife.

  622. And they had a baby.

  623. So you can connect

  624. the dots of knowledge

  625. there, right?

  626. We're not just talking

  627. about, I know about

  628. this is a deep,

  629. intimate, connected

  630. relationship word.

  631. No.

  632. See, Paul's prayer

  633. is not that you

  634. would know about

  635. God, that you'd have

  636. some information

  637. about God, but

  638. that you would have

  639. this deep, intimate

  640. connection with the

  641. truth of who he is.

  642. That there's

  643. relationship

  644. intertwined in every

  645. aspect and area of

  646. your life and your

  647. heart, that you

  648. would know, that you

  649. would know at a deep,

  650. intimate angle, this

  651. truth that God has

  652. for you, that you may

  653. know that the eyes

  654. of your heart would

  655. be illuminated to see

  656. and know these truths.

  657. Let's jump into the

  658. first one that the

  659. eyes of your heart

  660. may be enlightened,

  661. so that you may

  662. know the hope of

  663. his calling, the

  664. hope of his calling.

  665. I love this picture.

  666. I love this picture

  667. as we stand on

  668. kind of the opening

  669. couple weeks frozen

  670. in the tundra

  671. of the new year.

  672. I mean, God has

  673. called you to hope.

  674. Man, don't miss that.

  675. So many times we

  676. believe God has

  677. called us to duty and

  678. responsibility and

  679. misery and checking

  680. boxes and all God has

  681. called you to hope.

  682. See, the truth

  683. is, hope is only

  684. found in him.

  685. It's a lie of the

  686. enemy that there

  687. is hope outside

  688. of a relationship

  689. with Christ.

  690. Everything outside

  691. of our eternal

  692. relationship with

  693. Christ is temporary.

  694. Everything right?

  695. Go back just a second.

  696. 'cause you might

  697. be thinking, no,

  698. man, if I could

  699. just get the right

  700. stuff, I would feel

  701. like hope and joy.

  702. Go back to Christmas.

  703. It wasn't

  704. that long ago.

  705. Remember your

  706. favorite present?

  707. How about last

  708. Christmas?

  709. The Christmas

  710. before that?

  711. It's hard to even

  712. remember this last

  713. Christmas, what we

  714. did or didn't get.

  715. And you might've got

  716. a super awesome, you

  717. know what's coming up?

  718. Super Bowl, right?

  719. You know what's

  720. on sale everywhere

  721. right now?

  722. Televisions.

  723. You know why?

  724. 'cause the one you

  725. got, it's basically

  726. trash, right?

  727. Because there's

  728. a newer one and

  729. a better one.

  730. No, Stan, I'm

  731. just joking.

  732. Just so you know.

  733. Stan's like Tina.

  734. See we gotta get

  735. that new, okay?

  736. No, you don't even

  737. have lights at your

  738. house, guys, so

  739. you're not getting

  740. the big screen tv.

  741. Don't even, don't

  742. even try that, right?

  743. Our world continues

  744. to sell us more stuff.

  745. Our hearts get more

  746. attached to the stuff.

  747. And what we realize

  748. in very short order

  749. is the stuff that we

  750. have, it just starts

  751. to fade and rot.

  752. Store it for yourself

  753. as treasures.

  754. Where on heaven,

  755. not on earth.

  756. Where moth and rust

  757. destroy thieves.

  758. Break in and steal

  759. where your son opens

  760. your truck door

  761. into a boulder.

  762. Stuff happens

  763. and things

  764. deteriorate, right?

  765. They don't

  766. last forever.

  767. They wear out and they

  768. rot and they fade.

  769. Stuff doesn't offer

  770. real hope at all.

  771. It's a mirage.

  772. It's temporary.

  773. It's a lie of

  774. the enemy money.

  775. It's great, right?

  776. You store it up, you

  777. store it up, you store

  778. it up as security

  779. and safety and hope.

  780. And then inflation

  781. comes and then health

  782. stuff happens and

  783. then all of a sudden

  784. everything that you

  785. stored and saved

  786. and treasured and

  787. savored in the heart

  788. of your hearts and

  789. it meant everything

  790. to you, just sort of

  791. falls through your

  792. fingers like sand.

  793. 'cause it doesn't

  794. satisfy, there's

  795. no security,

  796. there's no hope.

  797. Right?

  798. Relationships.

  799. Now those

  800. right, those.

  801. You fall in

  802. love with that.

  803. Perfect someone,

  804. Olivia, this would

  805. make for a very

  806. awkward moment.

  807. I'm not gonna

  808. bring it up.

  809. Jamie already did.

  810. So you fall in

  811. love with someone.

  812. You never know where

  813. it's gonna lead,

  814. and there's this

  815. romantic infatuation

  816. and joy, and hope

  817. and excitement and

  818. all of this stuff.

  819. And then you get

  820. married like Zach

  821. and Kate who got

  822. it all figured out.

  823. Caitlyn, sorry.

  824. Sorry.

  825. It's easy,

  826. it's coasting,

  827. it's perfect.

  828. There's no arguments

  829. over where the trash

  830. can goes or who left

  831. the toothpaste open.

  832. None of that

  833. stuff, right?

  834. It's just fun

  835. and perfect.

  836. And you know

  837. what happens in

  838. life sometimes

  839. relationships start

  840. to fall apart.

  841. People hurt

  842. each other.

  843. People fail.

  844. People make messes,

  845. and you sit in the

  846. mess of all of your

  847. hope, being in the

  848. relationship with

  849. another human being

  850. and realize, man.

  851. Now, do we find some

  852. great joy there?

  853. You know why?

  854. There's a little,

  855. little bit of

  856. real kind of value

  857. in that space?

  858. 'cause they're

  859. the only thing on

  860. this planet that's

  861. eternal, right?

  862. And connecting to

  863. other people in

  864. relationship does have

  865. a measure of value

  866. and hope tied to it.

  867. But guys, at the

  868. end of the day, if

  869. you don't have a

  870. relationship with

  871. Christ, if your

  872. hope is not tied to

  873. him, people will let

  874. you down and then

  875. you're gonna be left

  876. trying to make sense.

  877. Everything your hope

  878. was built on starts

  879. a crumble, right?

  880. He is the

  881. source of hope.

  882. And you know a great

  883. lie of the enemy is

  884. that God wants to

  885. take away your hope

  886. and joy and future.

  887. I.

  888. Right that, that he

  889. wants to take you

  890. away from all the

  891. fun stuff, the good

  892. stuff, the exciting

  893. stuff, and pull you

  894. over to this corner

  895. where you gotta like

  896. wear a robe, beat

  897. your head with a stone

  898. tablet, not have any

  899. fun the rest of your

  900. life, or experience

  901. any joy or meaning

  902. that you have to check

  903. all these boxes of

  904. misery and denial.

  905. But man, the lie

  906. of the enemy is

  907. that those things

  908. lead you anywhere

  909. but to destruction.

  910. What we miss all the

  911. time is, I mean, it's

  912. a stupid illustration

  913. I guess, but it's

  914. almost like being

  915. on the Titanic.

  916. And Jesus has one

  917. route that gets us to

  918. a lifeboat and we're

  919. like, no, no, no.

  920. I wanna stay here

  921. and have fun with my

  922. friends and goof off

  923. and do this and that.

  924. And Jesus is

  925. like, no, no, no.

  926. Come with me.

  927. Come with me.

  928. This is the way that

  929. leads to, to life and,

  930. and real hope is here.

  931. And we're like, nah,

  932. nah, you're just

  933. trying to make me

  934. do all this stuff.

  935. 'cause you don't want

  936. me to have any fun.

  937. Right.

  938. How sad, what a lie

  939. of the enemy that

  940. the savior of all

  941. the world came to

  942. rescue us and show

  943. us a pathway through

  944. a minefield of a

  945. fallen world filled

  946. with destruction.

  947. And we've believed

  948. the lie that he just

  949. doesn't want us to

  950. have any fun, and he

  951. just wants to make

  952. our life miserable,

  953. and he just wants to

  954. give us a bunch of

  955. rules and regulations

  956. and duties to follow.

  957. It's not who

  958. he is at all.

  959. He loves you and he's

  960. laid out a narrow way

  961. that leads to life.

  962. And invited you to

  963. follow and walk in it.

  964. And he says,

  965. sadly, few do.

  966. So few find it,

  967. few walk it.

  968. But man, that's

  969. real hope.

  970. He's offered to us

  971. and it's available a

  972. hope that eternally

  973. checks out.

  974. Right?

  975. We may have some

  976. temporary insurance

  977. man, but we have

  978. eternal fire insurance

  979. that one day when

  980. the whole world

  981. is destroyed and

  982. consumed in fire.

  983. Those who are in

  984. Christ are saved from

  985. the wrath of God,

  986. saved from the coming,

  987. destruction, and

  988. experience real hope,

  989. joy, and purpose.

  990. And guys, let me

  991. just say this to you.

  992. God's not interested

  993. just in the eternal

  994. hope He wants

  995. to offer you.

  996. He wants you to

  997. experience real hope.

  998. Jesus came to bring

  999. abundant life, but

  1000. we gotta define

  1001. it the way Jesus

  1002. would, right?

  1003. Partying and drinking

  1004. and sexual immorality

  1005. and debauchery.

  1006. Those were not

  1007. terms Jesus sold his

  1008. disciples on, right?

  1009. That's not what

  1010. he's about.

  1011. That's not

  1012. abundant life.

  1013. That's self-indulgent,

  1014. sinful life that

  1015. leads to destruction.

1016. But he offers us in

  1017. this life vision and

  1018. hope and purpose and

  1019. meaning, and when

  1020. we're connected to

  1021. him, we find it.

  1022. So I've been doing

  1023. a thing the last

  1024. few weeks, actually

  1025. a couple months I

  1026. heard this, and as

  1027. you know, I'm pretty

  1028. big in neuroscience

  1029. obviously, because I

  1030. know neuroscience is

  1031. the science of neuros.

  1032. Hello?

  1033. Geez.

  1034. Alright, so I may

1035. or may not be a

  1036. brain scientist.

1037. Um, but I did have

1038. a CAT scan one time

  1039. from a concussion,

  1040. have a brain.

  1041. I've got the picture.

  1042. So I find myself

  1043. at least connected

  1044. to this idea just

  1045. a little bit.

  1046. I heard some stuff

  1047. that was really

1048. cool and I did some

  1049. research and the

  1050. cool thing about

  1051. neuroscience is it's

  1052. so cutting edge and

  1053. it's so fresh and

  1054. new that you may

  1055. disagree with it, but

  1056. that's okay because

1057. the in info is still

1058. coming in and we can

  1059. just kind of talk

  1060. as conceptually.

  1061. This is what we're

  1062. kind of thinking.

  1063. There is some really

  1064. interesting stuff.

  1065. That I ran across a

  1066. couple weeks ago about

  1067. the A-M-C-C-A-M-C-C,

  1068. not run D-M-C-A-M-C-C,

  1069. the anterior mid

  1070. cingulate cortex.

  1071. Please raise your

1072. hand if this is a term

  1073. you've heard before.

  1074. Angie, I'm

  1075. looking at you.

  1076. If you teach

  1077. science, come on.

  1078. Okay, good.

  1079. Good.

  1080. Okay.

  1081. So I'm not gonna

  1082. ask anybody to come

  1083. up and define it.

  1084. 'cause basically you

  1085. could come up here

  1086. and say something

1087. and we'd all be like.

  1088. Oh yeah, yeah, I

  1089. agree for sure.

  1090. And have no idea

  1091. if it's true.

  1092. Right.

  1093. Wait, Calvin,

  1094. do you know?

  1095. No, I'm just kidding.

  1096. That's right.

  1097. Anterior mid

  1098. cingulate cortex.

  1099. Now as I understand

1100. it, and again, this is

  1101. just something I ran

  1102. across and I thought,

  1103. this is fascinating

  1104. to think about how

  1105. our God designed us

  1106. for purpose, for hope,

  1107. for meaning, and maybe

1108. a way that it shows

  1109. up physiologically

  1110. in our brain.

  1111. Check this out

  1112. somewhere in here,

  1113. this general region

  1114. is this mid right

  1115. And I don't mean it's

  1116. mid guys, like it's

  1117. not that cool, right?

1118. This is the mid area,

  1119. middle area, anterior,

  1120. mid cingulate cortex.

  1121. And this particular

  1122. area of our brain

  1123. is associated with

  1124. potentially regulates,

  1125. but other pieces

  1126. may come into play.

1127. Uh, our will to live

  1128. our will to live.

  1129. So check this out.

  1130. When you do things

  1131. that are just kind

  1132. of selfishly what

1133. you want to do when

  1134. you're just doing

  1135. stuff for you, just

  1136. doing what you want,

  1137. whenever you want,

  1138. however you want,

1139. this part of our brain

  1140. actually shrinks.

  1141. It gets smaller.

  1142. This area of our

  1143. brain that regulates

  1144. our will to live.

  1145. The more we do

  1146. stuff that's just

  1147. self-indulgent,

  1148. that's just about us.

  1149. That's all about our

  1150. own, maybe sinful

  1151. nature, doing our own

  1152. thing, the less will

  1153. to live We experience.

  1154. And listen, if you've

  1155. gotten yourself

1156. caught in a cycle of

  1157. sin, you've gotten

  1158. yourself caught in

  1159. messes sometimes, and

  1160. the enemy just pulls

  1161. you deeper and down

  1162. into darker spaces,

  1163. back alleys, and

  1164. in stinking black

  1165. holes of struggle

  1166. and temptation.

  1167. You know what that

  1168. feels like To feel

  1169. less and less hope,

  1170. less and less like

  1171. there's any reason

1172. to press on or go

  1173. on, and you just

  1174. feel like giving

  1175. up and quitting.

  1176. There's a

  1177. physiological thing

  1178. happening in our

  1179. brain that God,

  1180. the epic creator

  1181. designed that's in

  1182. direct correlation

  1183. to those acts and

  1184. behaviors that are

  1185. contrary to somehow.

  1186. He's called us

  1187. to live now.

  1188. It also is kind

  1189. of cool, is.

1190. When you do things you

1191. don't want to do, and

  1192. I don't mean like I

  1193. don't wanna sin, but I

  1194. sinned and I'm talking

  1195. about that when you

  1196. do things that you

  1197. should do that maybe

  1198. you don't want to

1199. do that are hard and

  1200. they stretch you and

  1201. you don't really like

  1202. exercise or helping

  1203. someone in need or

  1204. making a difference

  1205. in somebody's life

  1206. or self-denial, and

1207. you do some of these

  1208. things that God's

  1209. called his people to

1210. do, this part of your

  1211. brain begins to grow

  1212. and increase in size.

  1213. And your will to

  1214. live increases.

  1215. It's this crazy

  1216. phenomenon where

  1217. you hate exercise,

  1218. you don't wanna

  1219. do exercise.

  1220. Exercise is the

  1221. devil, and then you

  1222. do some exercise and

  1223. you're like, huh,

  1224. I kind of feel a

  1225. little more alive.

  1226. Right.

  1227. Same thing happens

  1228. when you're like,

  1229. oh, the nursery,

  1230. oh, Sunday's cool.

  1231. Oh, the teenagers

1232. and I hang out with

1233. them and I engage in

  1234. them and I'm tired

  1235. and I don't want to

1236. go, and I have so

  1237. many other things

  1238. I'd rather do, but

  1239. then I invest and I

1240. engage and I come back

  1241. feeling more alive.

  1242. It's not just

  1243. some feeling, it's

  1244. physiologically

  1245. happening in

  1246. our brain, the

  1247. way God made us.

  1248. 'cause he created

  1249. us for this desire.

  1250. To do, well, maybe

  1251. it's not desire,

  1252. but this result that

1253. when we do the things

1254. he's called us to do,

  1255. we feel more alive

  1256. and more hopeful.

1257. In fact, it sort of

  1258. reminds me of giving

  1259. over to oblivion the

  1260. junk that lies behind

  1261. and pressing on and

  1262. stretching toward

  1263. what lies ahead.

  1264. Right?

  1265. Shameless plug,

  1266. stretch 2025.

  1267. Just throwing

  1268. it out there.

  1269. But what we're

  1270. really dealing with

  1271. here is God's hope

  1272. regulator that he put

  1273. in our own brains.

  1274. How crazy cool

  1275. is our God.

1276. That he made a way

  1277. for us, even when

  1278. we don't want to,

  1279. but, and we begin

  1280. to, and our physical

  1281. body even meets us

  1282. there because of his

  1283. awesome creation.

  1284. Sometimes it's all

1285. we want to do to

  1286. just cuddle up in

  1287. our blanket and let

1288. the world go to hell

  1289. and say, who cares?

1290. And this season of the

  1291. year, we especially

  1292. find ourselves

  1293. wanting to live there.

  1294. Man, when you stretch

  1295. and when you reach,

  1296. and when you deny

  1297. yourself, you take

  1298. up his cross and

  1299. you follow him,

1300. you become alive in a

  1301. way that you weren't

1302. and in a way that

  1303. the devil wants to

1304. tell you is not true.

  1305. Right?

1306. Man, if you give up,

  1307. if you surrender, if

  1308. you deny yourself,

  1309. you're missing out.

  1310. You're losing.

  1311. Jesus says, guys,

  1312. you're winning.

  1313. You're winning.

  1314. This is the way.

  1315. Follow me in it.

  1316. Self-denial.

  1317. Servant of all.

  1318. What if when Jesus

  1319. said, the greatest

  1320. among you'll be

  1321. your servant?

1322. He was also kind of

1323. tipping the hat to the

1324. idea that maybe he who

  1325. serves the most, has

1326. the most hope and the

1327. most joy, and is the

  1328. most alive, not just

  1329. in eternity, but right

  1330. here in this place.

  1331. The hope of

  1332. his calling.

  1333. God has called

  1334. you to hope.

  1335. He's called you outta

  1336. darkness and delight.

1337. He's called you out of

  1338. selfish indulgence and

  1339. sinfulness into joy

  1340. and purpose and hope.

  1341. As Paul said, I

  1342. ask and I pray

  1343. that the eyes of

  1344. your heart might be

  1345. enlightened to know.

  1346. At a crazy, deep,

  1347. intimate, hardcore,

  1348. fully entwined,

  1349. a hundred percent

  1350. engaged level, what

  1351. it looks like to

  1352. experience the hope

  1353. of his calling in

  1354. your life, and as

  1355. you stretch into

  1356. 2025 and into this

  1357. new year, don't let

1358. the enemy feed you a

  1359. line that you gotta

1360. kind of do your own

  1361. thing and that God's

  1362. plans for you are

  1363. sorta mid at best.

  1364. You know, his plans

  1365. are incredible.

  1366. His offering of

  1367. joining him in

  1368. hope and vision and

  1369. purpose is incredible.

  1370. He's got you placed

  1371. in a family, he's

1372. got you placed in a

  1373. school, in a business,

  1374. in a community, in

  1375. a neighborhood, in

  1376. a random street,

  1377. on a random time,

  1378. on a random day

  1379. for purpose.

  1380. And we're consumed

  1381. with our selfishness

  1382. and we miss life.

  1383. Joy and hope that's

  1384. right there for us.

1385. And all it takes is

1386. one step and one act.

  1387. And my, my prayer

1388. for us as we go into

  1389. 2025 is the daily.

  1390. We'll say,

  1391. Lord, here I am.

  1392. Use me in the

  1393. moments when we're

  1394. just driving in our

  1395. car that will be

  1396. engaged with him.

  1397. The moments in

  1398. the grocery store.

  1399. We're engaged.

  1400. Maybe just Amazon now,

  1401. but wherever you're at

  1402. around people, right?

  1403. There was say,

  1404. Lord, here I am.

1405. How do you wanna use

  1406. me in this moment?

  1407. Because I don't wanna

1408. talk to anybody and I

  1409. don't wanna love and

  1410. I don't wanna reach,

  1411. and I don't wanna

  1412. care and I don't wanna

1413. serve, but my will to

1414. live dies a little bit

1415. every time I do that.

  1416. Instead, I want

  1417. to be alive.

  1418. How can I serve?

  1419. How can I stretch?

  1420. How can I experience

1421. what you have for me?

  1422. And there's a few

  1423. other things in there

  1424. that we're not gonna

  1425. get to right now.

  1426. The riches of his

  1427. glorious inheritance

  1428. in the saints.

  1429. Just know this guys.

  1430. He has unlimited

  1431. resource to accomplish

  1432. the vision and the

  1433. hope that he puts

  1434. in your heart.

  1435. And the surpassing

  1436. greatness of

  1437. his power,

  1438. unlimited power.

1439. So he has all the

  1440. resources, all

  1441. the provision and

  1442. all the power to

  1443. see us through to

  1444. a place where we

  1445. experience the hope

  1446. of his calling.

  1447. So this year, as

  1448. you get ready to

  1449. head into the frozen

  1450. tundra today that

1451. none of us want to

  1452. go out into, instead

  1453. of laying dormant,

  1454. instead of giving

  1455. into the darkness,

  1456. it's my prayer that

1457. the light of the Lord

  1458. will illuminate the

  1459. eyes of your heart,

1460. that you'll be able to

1461. know the hope of his

  1462. calling and his power

  1463. and his strength,

  1464. his provision.

  1465. It's mercy in his

1466. presence in all of it.

  1467. Lord, thank you

  1468. for your incredible

  1469. word for the truth.

  1470. Lord, we live in

  1471. a world that very

  1472. much loses sight

  1473. and draws us and

  1474. calls us into all

  1475. kinds of distracted,

  1476. dark places.

  1477. And Father, I pray

1478. for us here today that

  1479. you would shine crazy

  1480. bright in our hearts.

  1481. Illuminate the truth

  1482. that we might know,

  1483. the hope of your

  1484. calling in our life.

  1485. I pray you'd speak

  1486. that to each person

  1487. here, that today they

  1488. would have a sense

  1489. of, huh, I think

  1490. this is something God

1491. wants me to do, and

  1492. that you would give

  1493. 'em the courage and

  1494. the power through

  1495. your Holy Spirit

  1496. to step into that

  1497. place and to become

  1498. more alive because

  1499. of that action.

  1500. Thank you that we

  1501. are fearfully and

  1502. wonderfully made.

  1503. And we serve a

  1504. God who is beyond

  1505. comprehension in

  1506. his love and his

  1507. mercy for us.

  1508. Thank you Jesus.

  1509. Amen.
