Our Glorious Inheritance | January 19, 2025

Eileen, I noticed you

do a lot of ministry

in Florida too, so

that Russia's talk

was pretty good, but

you got, you got wiser

over the years and did

the Florida Ministry.

I spent one winter

in Minnesota and that

was enough for me.

That was it.

I needed.

No more motivation to

go reach the people in

the south for Jesus.

Very important,

very important.

Well, we were talking

a little bit last

week about this winter

wonderland, right?

Winter, the season

of darkness and cold

misery and freezing.

I don't need to

remind you because

you came in cold this

morning and you're

gonna leave colder.

Bad news.

Um, there's this

beautiful, beautiful,

as, as Kyle likes

to call it, uh,

teman money floating

around outside that's

gonna be able to be

plowed very soon.

So don't stress,

it's gonna be great.

Um, snow winter.

Ha.

But good news.

Jesus has good news.

That's really the

only good news I got.

'cause it's gonna

be cold when

you go outside.

But we were talking

last week about

this prayer for

the Ephesians that

Paul prayed in, uh,

Ephesians chapter

one verses 18 and

19 and kind of.

Tip my hand, that

this is a prayer

I'm praying for us

in Noblesville and

really for our whole

church as we stretch

into 2025, that these

words would not just

be a prayer lost

to time, but they

really were prayed

for the Ephesians

and the Christians

there intended to

be passed on to

the other churches.

All the way

to you and me.

We talked last

week about this.

I ask that the eyes of

your heart, right, not

your physical eyes,

not your physical

discernment, but

rather your heart and

your spirit and soul

would be enlightened,

illuminated with the

truth, in contrast

to the darkness that

you could see, right?

That you may know

that biblical

picture of not just

knowledge, but deep,

intimate, connected,

knowing, right?

Even in the

biblical sense,

wink, wink, right?

Know intimately

this truth and

this reality.

And what was it that

his prayer to the ephe

for the Ephesians was

that they would know.

First, the hope of

his calling, and

last week we unpacked

that for a while.

The reality that God

has called us to hope,

that the only real

hope is found in him.

That purpose and

meaning and vision

and fulfillment, and

hope we chase all of

this stuff in this

world around us.

We're bombarded with

endless messaging

about what satisfies,

but the reality

is, is that it's

only in Christ that

we really know.

No hope, right?

We talked a little

brain science, right?

This anterior, mid

cingulate cortex that

helps regulate our

will to live, right?

I call it the hope

regulator, that as

we do things that

we don't want to do,

but we know they're

good for us, right?

Know they matter.

They help

somebody else.

That that little

tiny part in

your brain, wait.

Is that better?

McKayla Right there.

Okay.

Hey, I want you

guys to know this.

Check this out.

This picture is

actually of the

anterior mid

cingulate cortex.

I did not know that,

but when I pointed

like this, that is not

where it is located.

Just so you know,

I was just pointing

at my brain.

But I did get

called out by

some neuroscience

skilled people

here in our church.

So right here, people

use your singular,

whatever it is, right?

Your hope regulator,

this part of

your brain.

When we just do

the things that are

selfish and we just

do what we want to do

and we don't stretch

and we don't strive to

do the things that are

hard and difficult,

though they matter.

We lose that

will to live.

It shrinks, right?

And we know this in

sin, we know this in

the struggle to, to

lean back into the

stuff that's hard

that we don't want to

do, but yet we come

more alive when we

step into that space.

And it's not just

philosophical, it's

not just a metaphor,

it's brain science

is saying pretty

crazy cool stuff.

So God has called us.

And wants us to

experience hope

in how we live.

And man, it is my pun

intended, hope that

you get in touch with

that going into 2025,

that you grab a hold

of his calling and his

purpose in your life.

Not just the

stuff that the

world's saying.

Chase this, chase

that it matters.

You'll find hope

fulfillment here.

You won't You find

it when you're living

out the call of

Jesus in your life.

Paul prays that you

may know the riches

of his glorious

inheritance in

the saints, right?

This unlimited

resource that God has

and celebrated, finale

for his people, the

surpassing greatness

of his power to

those who believe

unlimited power

accessible for us who

are in Christ Jesus.

Well, today I wanna

unpack this second

component a little

bit, the riches of his

glorious inheritance

in the saints.

And I, I wanna start,

I actually thought I

was gonna end here.

I, here's, here's

what's funny.

This is a very simple

little phrase, right?

And you guys know

me, I'm pretty

transparent.

Um, I have wrestled

and like, I've been

like upside down,

choke, holding

this verse going

back and forth.

God's been doing

that with me, trying

to, like, there's

a billion things I

wanna talk about and

a ton of different

angles on it, and I

really thought I'd

end with the big

why, but then I'm

like, you know what?

Now let's just

start with the why.

And then if you get

nothing else, maybe

you'll get the why.

Why does Paul

pray this?

Why is he praying that

the people in Ephesus,

that the church in

Noblesville would

know the riches of his

glorious inheritance

in the Saints?

Why?

Well, here's

where I land.

I think it's simply

for this reason.

If you understand

what God has in store.

If you understand

the rich, glorious

inheritance that

is yours through

Christ, it changes

your perspective

on everything.

Everything.

Your job, your

bank account, your

relationships,

your physical

health, everything.

When you begin

to get an eternal

perspective in this

life that we live,

when we recognize that

this life we live is

temporary, scripture

says it's but a vapor

that appears for a

little while and then

it's gone, and we

live in that reality,

that eternity,

this ridiculously

unending amazing

inheritance awaits us.

And here's Satan's

amazing trick for us.

He gets us.

Like Jacob and au,

I mean, he gets

us to sell off our

birthright for a

stupid bowl of soup

and not the soup's

not important.

You'll hear more about

soup later, right?

Verla, soup's

important, but in

this crazy biblical

account of Jacob and

au, we got this dude

who's hungry and

he's desperate to

satisfy his temporary

needs and he gives

up his inheritance.

What a picture of

what the enemy does

to us all the time.

Eternity is

so far away.

This life is so long.

This winter is

never ending.

This day is freezing

and forever, right?

We think in these

crazy temporary terms,

and the devil gets

us to choose sin, to

choose disobedience,

to choose rebellion,

potentially in

forfeiting an

inheritance.

This ridiculous.

And Paul writes to

the church an Ephesus

and says, Hey guys.

Keep your eyes fixed

on what's eternal,

keep your eyes fixed.

I pray that you'll

know the hope and

purpose of his

calling, and I pray

that you will know the

riches of its glorious

inheritance in the

saints so that it will

help you when you're

trying to navigate

the circumstances

that are hard in this

fallen world when

you're navigating

health issues and

financial issues

and difficulties

of all kinds, when

you're facing the

reality that Jesus

told us about, right?

That in this

world you're gonna

have trouble,

but take heart.

'cause I've

overcome the world.

There is a glorious

inheritance that

awaits the saints.

And if we can live

in that reality and

to be connected to

that, it's gonna make

a huge difference in

the choices that we

make, in the things

that we do and the

things that we don't

do as we navigate

this year ahead.

So let's dive into

this a little bit.

Keeping that reality

that the why behind

all of it is that

our perspective

would shift, right?

This word riches here

in the, uh, Greek

is, uh, Pluto, which

some of you might

think that's a planet.

Some of you may not

actually a Greek word.

I don't really know.

Some of you may

be thinking it's

Mickey mouse's

dog, and that's

okay too, right?

Totally cool with

everybody in their

Pluto experience.

But this word, Pluto,

it does mean this

idea of rich, right?

Like usually

associated with the

idea of, of wealth,

enormous riches.

I do think you could

maybe like do a little

bit of a, a deep

dive into the idea

of richness, right?

I don't know if

you've, if you've

ever, um, have

I ever gone to

Perkins and had the

peanut butter pie?

Yeah.

Yeah.

Listen, I pride myself

in the reality that I,

I can eat two pieces.

Jamie can't,

but I can.

That's how rich

my palate is.

I can get through too.

Right.

And I'm not a quitter.

If I start the

second one, it's

gonna get finished.

But that's a

whole other issue.

Stop stretching.

Um, the reality is

that sometimes we

have this richness

in food, right?

That has this deep

flavor that the more

you get into it, it's

just saturated in

depth of, of value and

taste and, and all of

that richness, right?

And I think when

we think about

the riches of his

glorious inheritance

of the saints, I

think we can make a

case that there's a

richness and a depth

to the magnitude

of what God has.

Uh, but really at

its core, this word

is tied to wealth.

And in the Greek

it has these two

little, uh, kind of

contrasting or, or

word pictures that

come out of it.

It's this word

abundance and another

word that I've been

using a lot lately.

I don't know if

you have platitude.

Raise your hand if

you've heard the word

plenitude before.

What the heck are

college people

doing with the

word plenitude?

Is that a thing?

How about if

you've used the

word plenitude

in a sentence?

Raise your hand.

What sentence, John?

It probably wasn't

right, but I had a

plenitude of stuff.

You had a

plenitude of stuff.

Who did you

tell this to?

John?

You're full of

bologna, man.

That's what that's

about right there.

You had a plenitude of

nonsense coming outta

your mouth, so yeah.

Yeah.

So these two

words, abundance

and plenitude,

they're, they're

kind of important.

Check this out.

The word abundance

really ties to this

picture of access

to way more than

enough access to way

more than enough.

Our God is the

God of abundance.

He owns the cattle

on a thousand hills.

He is able to do well.

Let's check it out.

Ephesians three, a

couple chapters ahead

says Now to him, who

is able to do far

more abundantly, the

old King James would

say, exceedingly more

abundantly than all

that we ask or think.

The NIV would say it

as this immeasurably

more than we can

ask or even imagine.

That's a picture of

who our God is in this

idea of abundance.

He has unlimited

resource.

He has unlimited

access to anything

that we need, and

sometimes we get

a little screwy in

our theology and we

become people who

chase this abundance.

Jesus said, I came to

give you life and to

give it abundantly.

And we get stuck on

the idea of wealth

and possessions being

tied to abundance,

and that's how we

define this way

more than enough.

And some of us, I

mean, maybe you've

done the same prayer

I have, right?

Where you're like,

Lord, if you would

entrust me with a

few million dollars,

I would love the

opportunity to show

you what a good

steward I could be.

And maybe you

prayed that prayer.

Um, I, I prayed

every once in a

while just in case.

Right?

You have not, 'cause

you asked not uh, but

God in his wisdom,

knows not to give

me a few million

dollars 'cause

I'll do dumb stuff.

Right.

And they'll be like,

what'd you do, bro?

But the reality is,

is that God has access

and owns the cattle

on thousand Hills,

like nothing we ever

would be without

because of what he

has available to us.

And sometimes we

chase, you know, that

prosperity gospel

idea that if we

follow Jesus, he'll

give us abundance

and we'll have tons

of stuff and we'll

have tons of money.

And that's how

we'll know we're

real spiritual.

And the more

spiritual we get, the

more stuff we get.

Right.

That's, it's a real

messed up theology

because if that's

the case, then the

disciples, they

all got screwed.

Let me just say that.

Right?

They all died

impoverished, right?

And they were his

closest followers.

That's not a, it's

not a good doctrine.

Not at all.

And I think it's

because there's also

this other idea of

plenitude that's

part of this richness

of God, right?

This word plenitude,

if you haven't figured

it out by now, kind

of has the word

plentiful or plenti

as part of it, right?

And here's the

contrast that

you need to see.

We have a God who,

through him, we

have access to way

more than enough.

But know this

promise of the Lord.

You will always have

enough and we don't

need to go chasing.

Physical possession,

monetary abundance.

His promise to us is

that his provision,

he will meet all of

our needs according

to his riches.

In Christ Jesus

never seen the

righteous forsaken

nor their children

begging for bread.

God will meet

our needs.

He will give

us enough.

We get maybe lost

on what enough is,

right and what we

should be chasing.

I don't know if you've

ever heard this psalm.

It's called Psalm 23.

If you've been

to a funeral, you

probably have, if

you've been to a

Christian bookstore,

you probably have.

If you've ever

gone to church,

you probably have.

You probably know

how it starts.

The Lord is

my shepherd.

I shall not want, I

shall not want for

anything the Ivy says.

I shall lack nothing.

Contrary to how

to use it in a

sentence, John.

'cause I'm not

really sure.

I've never used

it, but there

is a plenitude

of provision.

In our relationship

with our Heavenly

Father, we have

access to everything,

but we always

have what we need.

And if you don't have

what you need, if

you're in a position

where you don't have

enough money or enough

material possessions

or enough physical

health, I would

challenge you to get

in tune a little bit

with the heart of God

in your circumstance

to check out that

eternal perspective

and overlay that

over what you're

walking through.

Because maybe

there's a purpose

greater than your

own self-indulgence.

Maybe there's a

purpose greater

than you just having

a bunch of stuff.

Maybe God's entrusting

you to walk through.

Some financial

hardship, some

physical hardship,

even some relational

hardship for a

purpose to accomplish

something far greater

with a bigger eternal

picture than you

can understand.

Even in this life, we

don't get an easy walk

through this thing.

There's hard things.

Our God has access

to everything, and

sometimes he pours out

ridiculous provision

for a purpose, and

sometimes he just

gives us enough

to get through the

moment and the day

and the situation.

But there is always

plenty, always

plenty in this word.

And then this idea

Pluto of who our God

is and what he has,

the riches of his

glorious inheritance

in the saints.

Now that kind of ties

more to this life.

Let's kinda squeeze

into this idea of

glorious inheritance.

This word glorious

in the Greek

has this picture

of magnificent.

Preeminent

and splendor.

Do you know why those

three words are kind

of tied to this?

Because they're about

the best we could come

up with and they sound

real fancy, right?

There's a lot

of adjectives we

could throw in

here, but none of

them capture the

heart of this word.

Glorious inheritance.

But listen, the

destination, the

inheritance that

awaits the saints,

man, it is preeminent.

There's nothing

in front of it.

There's nothing

behi, there's nothing

even close to it.

There's nothing that

is even comprehendible

in comparison to

what awaits those who

are in Christ Jesus.

That's the picture

of this word,

glorious In relation

to inheritance.

Now, inheritance.

I mean, we all kind

of probably know

that word, right?

Inheritance.

Um.

How many of you

guys are expecting

a really good one?

Just, oh no, I'm

just kidding.

I just wanted say,

um, but I didn't

want my son to raise

his hand, right?

My inheritance is the

legacy of following

the Lord, Josiah,

and I'm not gonna

leave you with a

bunch of money to

try to deal with you

and your brother.

Just fight over that.

I wouldn't do

that to you guys.

No.

Hey, the Bible

says leaving an

inheritance to your

children is something

that the Godly do.

So there is an idea,

for sure, biblically

of having some

provision to pass on

to the generations

that follow you,

that they might walk

in the right way,

so the Lord, right?

Unfortunately, this

word inheritance has

become sort of like

a lottery ticket

money grab for a

rich old uncle when

he passes, right?

And that becomes

a mess when

families fight over

all that stuff.

We ought to leave

a godly inheritance

to our children.

There ought to be

a legacy of how to

live and how to walk.

Regardless of if

there's a penny

involved in that or

not, there needs to

be an inheritance

parents that we leave

to our children and

to our grandchildren,

for sure.

This word inheritance,

if we, uh, steal a

couple letters out

of it, borrow this

maybe, uh, by a couple

vowels, we get this

word air, which is

actually part of the

origin of this word.

The idea of an

illegal heir is the

one who receives the

inheritance, right?

The Bible uses this

word sonship, that

we've been adopted

as sons and daughters

into the family of

the King of Kings and

Lord of Lords, who

has way more than we

could imagine, and

he has left us, or

we're stepping into

soon this inheritance

that is rightfully

belonging to us.

The heir, right?

Those who are

in Christ Jesus.

Now if we, uh, finish

this phrase, it says

glorious inheritance

in the saints, right?

The word here in

the Greek is Gios,

the holy ones.

So it's this glorious

inheritance of

the saints, right?

So if you were to say

to me that in order to

receive this glorious

inheritance you have

to reach sainthood,

I would say to you,

yes, yes, I agree.

You do.

You absolutely do need

to reach sainthood

to receive the

glorious inheritance

of the Lord.

Now, if you're one of

my Catholic friends,

you might be really

disappointed right

now 'cause you're

like, I've only done

like half a miracle.

I don't think it

counted towards

the three, and I

don't know how many

Hail Marys I did

recently, so there's

probably no good

shot that I'm gonna

reach Saint Hood.

But maybe you and

I have a different

working definition of

the word sainthood.

In fact, I'm gonna

work off more of a

biblical definition

than a Catholic church

tradition of sainthood

or some Episcopal

kind of twist.

We've created this

idea of saints, holy

ones set apart ones

are these people

who used to be like

you and me, but they

got super spiritual

and they did some

stuff that the

church recognized

as gold star.

I'm sorry, I went

with a sticker.

Now it's like

probably five star.

Right?

Like their Christian

Yelp review was out

of this world, right?

And people were like,

they're a saint.

Let's make 'em saints.

Yes.

Right.

Let me take you back

to the beginning of

this chapter we're

talking about, right?

We're on verse 18.

Let's jump back to

the first verse in

this entire book,

in Ephesians, the

very beginning of

the letter, this

is what it says.

To the Saints in

Ephesus, to the

aos, to the Holy

ones in Ephesus.

So we know that

this letter is

written to who?

The Saints, right?

And because Paul knows

how dense we are.

And the Holy Spirit

was like, Hey,

Andy's gonna need

more description

in Noblesville.

Let's add this phrase.

What is the phrase

after the comma?

It says this,

the faithful in

Christ Jesus.

Do you know how the

New Testament defines

a saint, someone who

is faithful in walking

with Christ Jesus.

Someone who's perfect.

No.

Someone who's

not human.

And unflawed, no.

Someone who works

miracles and has

the gift of miracles

to the power of

the Holy Spirit?

No, not how

it's defined.

It's simply

defined as this,

the faithful

followers of Jesus.

Are the saints, the

gios, the holy ones.

Don't make a

mistake here.

We're not just

called to be saints.

We're called saints.

That's who we

are in Christ.

And if you have a

relationship with

Jesus Christ, if you

confess your sin,

you put your hope and

your faith in him as

Lord and savior of

your life, the Bible

calls you a saint.

Now, can we throw

that perspective word

back on the pile and

be like, oh, maybe

I wanna start living

a little bit like

a saint, if that's

what I am, right?

Maybe there's a

thought there, right?

Maybe there's a

little bit of a

reality, like, I'm

not working my way

to being a saint.

Scripture already

calls me a saint,

and I need to maybe

get a little more

focused as a saint.

Adapt my

perspective, right?

So listen, this

glorious inheritance

for the holy ones,

the aos, it's, it's

your inheritance,

it's yours.

For those of you

who are in Christ

Jesus, it's yours.

Clear in the Greek,

super obvious,

your inheritance.

So maybe lemme

just wrap up this

whole little chat

with this idea.

What is this

glorious inheritance?

What is it?

Right?

We talked about why

and the perspective.

We've talked a

little bit about

the substance of

how ridiculously

awesome it is and

what it, what it

looks like in, in a

few different angles.

But like, what is

this inheritance that

we're gonna receive?

What is this glorious,

unbelievably amazing

inheritance that's

ours as we're

following Jesus?

What is it?

Well, I have no idea

Scripture says this.

No, I has seen,

no ear has heard.

And no mind has

imagined what

God's prepared for

those who love him.

Now listen, I pride

myself on having

a mind that can

imagine some stuff.

You know what I mean?

Like I got some

serious issues when

it's Super Bowl

time and I got even

more serious issues

when it's not.

This brain goes

a billion, this

cortex, whatever's

going on, right?

There's a lot

happening in

my imagination

all the time.

But this scripture

says to me, Andy,

imagine the most

amazing, the most

unbelievable, the

most indescribable,

inheritance.

It's gonna be crazy,

glorious stretch

as far as you can,

and you're not

even close, bro.

Not even close.

We don't even know

the magnitude of

what lies in store

for those of us who

are in Christ Jesus.

And you know, I

think it's important

because this

inheritance, right?

Maybe it's not this

idea of what it is.

And maybe we just

need to hold onto

the reality that

it is, it is there.

It awaits us.

It is for us.

In verse 14, little

tip of the hand here,

this inheritance is

sort of trickling out

a little bit already.

Scripture says

in verse 14 of

Ephesians one, that

the Holy Spirit

is the guarantee.

He's the down payment.

And so when Jesus left

this earth, like when

somebody leaves this

earth and leaves you

an inheritance, he

left where the Holy

Spirit came, I should

say, as a down payment

on what's yet to come.

And the power of

the Holy Spirit

in our life and

the involvement of

the Holy Spirit in

our life is just a

little glimpse at

what's about to come

in eternity if we

keep the perspective

of what God has

in store for us.

2025 promises to

be a year filled

with well a lot.

A year from now,

hopefully we'll have

a chance to talk

still and look back on

what this year held.

But it's my prayer

that we will get in

touch with the hope

of the calling that

God has given us.

We'll find joy and

purpose in how we live

and that no matter

what you face and what

you walk through, you

will hold tightly to

the truth and know

the riches of his

glorious inheritance

in the saints.

That your perspective

on everything that

you encounter will be

impacted and you'll

look through that

lens of the truth of

eternity and it'll

affect all of your

choices and all of

your relationships

and even your own

heart and attitude

towards what you

gotta walk in.

In this year.

God's gonna

do some stuff.

He likes doing

some stuff.

Keep the focus

where it needs to

be so you can be a

part of how awesome

that's gonna be.

Lord, thank you.

For a cold winter

morning to talk

about some pretty

glorious stuff.

Thank you For what

awaits those of us

who are in Christ, and

thank you for the Holy

Spirit as a guarantee

and a down payment to

just remind us there's

so much more to come.

Keep focused.

Lord, I pray you'd

help us with that.

You know how

distracted we get,

you know how our

perspective gets

pretty messed up.

Lord, I pray that you

would help us to fix

our eyes not on what

is seen, but on what

is unseen that you'd

help us in the moments

that we navigate in

this year ahead, to

be people who live

in the reality of the

glorious inheritance

that awaits us and

help us to live like

saints, holy ones

who are set apart and

to draw a whole lot

of people into this

awesome sainthood

you've called us to

help us with that in

this year ahead, I

pray in Jesus' name.

Amen.

for our warpath group.

and I talked about

it, decided the

guy's gotta go

one and three.

We won't remember

two and four.

It just won't happen.

So the first

Wednesday night and

the third Wednesday

night next door.

We'll have a cool

men's group gathering,

and then the ladies

are gonna do the

second and the fourth

kind of gives the

opposite night time

to hang out with

the kids at home.

So dads, you get a

little investment

with the kids on

second and the fourth.

Vice versa

on the moms.

So that's gonna

be a really cool

thing, guys.
