  1. Now, Andy didn't leave

  2. me any instructions

  3. for who was supposed

  4. to, uh, do the

  5. announcements today.

  6. So I'll be watching

  7. to see who I

  8. want to choose.

  9. I guess what I.

  10. Well, who is it?

  11. Well, it's the

  12. only other staff

  13. guy that's here.

  14. That would be Josh.

  15. Well, you didn't

  16. need to do the

  17. announcements,

  18. you know you'd

  19. get a couple,

  20. something like that.

  21. I'll watch and see

  22. if anybody isn't

  23. paying attention.

  24. Well, nobody's

  25. fixing to leave now.

  26. . Yeah.

  27. You miss me out

  28. here, don't you?

  29. Yeah.

  30. You know, I always

  31. used to have

  32. a lot of fun.

  33. I have bullet points.

  34. I don't know how,

  35. I don't know how

  36. to preach off

  37. a manuscript.

  38. Never did learn

  39. to do that.

  40. So even when we would

  41. only have about 30

  42. people in the church,

  43. I would be able to

  44. stand up there and

  45. I'd just look people

  46. right in the eye while

  47. I was preaching and.

  48. It worked pretty good.

  49. 'cause people never

  50. fall fell asleep

  51. during my sermon

  52. because whenever I

  53. was looking for an

  54. illustration and a

  55. name to use, it'd be

  56. just like, well, you

  57. know, Scott was out

  58. here doing that and

  59. see he just, he was

  60. down here like this

  61. and just like that.

  62. He looks up.

  63. So not your

  64. first, okay.

  65. Yeah, keep looking.

  66. I didn't give it yet.

  67. You just proved

  68. you were asleep

  69. already and the

  70. music was good.

  71. You shouldn't

  72. have fallen asleep

  73. this morning.

  74. Uh, I've been kind

  75. of pondering what

  76. I would preach on

  77. this morning, and

  78. usually I'm pretty

  79. fired up and

  80. wired ready to go

  81. with some things.

  82. And I have been

  83. thinking about stuff

  84. and I don't know,

  85. this may be the

  86. second time and.

  87. The history of me

  88. that I preached in

  89. jeans and boots.

  90. That's 'cause we were

  91. over here shoveling

  92. this morning.

  93. But it was, uh, so my

  94. wife said it's a jeans

  95. Sunday, so I guess

  96. I'm okay in jeans

  97. and in, in boots.

  98. It's better than

  99. shoes and in a, in

  100. a suit out there.

  101. So for some of you

  102. who are new, you

  103. probably haven't

  104. heard me preach

  105. for a day or two.

  106. It's nice to see you

  107. this morning, Olivia,

  108. since we're moving

  109. you this afternoon.

  110. I'm glad that you made

  111. it so we can help.

  112. I saved you a spot

  113. right up front.

  114. You and

  115. Gabriel, right?

  116. Right here in

  117. the front row.

  118. Gabriel, come

  119. with her.

  120. She's embarrassed

  121. to come on her own.

  122. Okay.

  123. Don't make noise.

  124. That makes it

  125. even worse.

  126. Yeah, mic, what're

  127. gonna have to

  128. ditch that mic.

  129. Okay.

  130. I have no problem

  131. with that.

  132. Off is that

  133. turned off?

  134. Okay.

  135. I suppose if I

  136. do that, it will

  137. look better.

  138. My wife always

  139. wants me to be

  140. more dignified.

  141. It doesn't

  142. work, but I try.

  143. What are you shaking

  144. your head at Robin?

  145. My goodness.

  146. Okay, so I've had

  147. Rusty on edge all

  148. weekend and he wasn't

  149. sure what I was

  150. doing with a special

  151. song this morning.

  152. And Jeff and Patty are

  153. sitting there saying,

  154. I sure hope we get

  155. to do announcements

  156. at the end of the

  157. service this morning.

  158. So I just want

  159. everybody to be ready.

  160. So we're, we're gonna

  161. sing a song this

  162. morning that . We,

  163. I did with the first

  164. youth group I got

  165. to work with only

  166. 50, 54 years ago.

  167. That about right hun,

  168. is before you were

  169. even in the picture.

  170. We've been married

  171. 51 and a half

  172. years, so, or 51.

  173. We've been

  174. married a while.

  175. I kinda came into

  176. Christianity in a, in

  177. a really weird way,

  178. and this morning,

  179. rather than preaching

  180. like I usually would

  181. preach why my son

  182. tells me that I

  183. like to tell stories

  184. and he's right.

  185. True, true stories.

  186. Not, not the kind

  187. that your kids

  188. tell when they're

  189. in trouble, but

  190. real stories and I.

  191. I came out of

  192. a, a remarkably

  193. interesting church.

  194. I grew up in the

  195. Church of the

  196. Brethren, and the

  197. Church of the Brethren

  198. was not like the

  199. brethren in Christ

  200. that we were part

  201. of here for a while.

  202. The Church of the

  203. Brethren was very, um,

  204. liberal, probably

  205. isn't quite

  206. the right word.

  207. They were very

  208. lost.

  209. How about that?

  210. And uh, when I went

  211. to, I guess that's

  212. going down when I went

  213. to Bible college, why

  214. my first year back

  215. home, my home church

  216. said, we'd like you to

  217. work with the youth.

  218. And so I said, great.

  219. I would like

  220. to do that.

  221. So I did.

  222. And, uh.

  223. My pastor

  224. was not saved.

  225. He didn't know Jesus.

  226. He was 50 some

  227. years old and his

  228. wife didn't know

  229. Jesus and his kids

  230. didn't know Jesus.

  231. And I came home after

  232. getting saved and

  233. fired up about a lot

  234. of, uh, things we

  235. were, Robin brought

  236. up after I asked him,

  237. we're gonna sing this

  238. song up here for you.

  239. Uh, not quite yet,

  240. but it was, uh, from

  241. the movie, A Thief

  242. in the Night, and

  243. it was a very big

  244. movie back in the

  245. day, Christian movie.

  246. It's only 52

  247. years old, , so

  248. it is somewhat

  249. dated and, uh.

  250. I went to school in

  251. the little town of

  252. University Park, Iowa,

  253. which was just about

  254. 45 minutes southeast

  255. of Des Moines, Iowa.

  256. And in this film that

  257. was filmed actually

  258. while we, Pam and I,

  259. were in Bible college

  260. there, and it's filmed

  261. at the Iowa State

  262. Fair, which been there

  263. many times and filmed

  264. at the airport where

  265. my brother-in-law

  266. missionary Ron was

  267. at, where they used

  268. the helicopters and

  269. it had the unites

  270. symbol on the side of

  271. the, of the airplane

  272. and the helicopter

  273. and all that.

  274. Ron worked on those

  275. and the hospital

  276. where my best friend's

  277. fiance worked and

  278. watched the filming of

  279. the . Part of the film

  280. and over at the Red

  281. Rock stand where Pam

  282. and I and my friend

  283. Bill and everybody

  284. else and his brother

  285. would go on dates out

  286. here to the Red Rocks.

  287. Damn.

  288. So it hit kinda

  289. close to home as

  290. being reality.

  291. It had the first,

  292. uh, reform church

  293. up in Pella and the

  294. Open Bible Church

  295. up in Des Moines and

  296. things right out of

  297. all of those things

  298. that were there.

  299. And so Robin watched

  300. that with some of

  301. you ladies and she

  302. said, oh, you gotta

  303. watch that again.

  304. And she can tell

  305. you all about what a

  306. wonderful thing it was

  307. scared her to death

  308. when she was young

  309. and it did scare some

  310. people into heaven,

  311. which was good.

  312. But it was quite

  313. intense why I.

  314. I came out of

  315. things like that.

  316. Keith Green, just

  317. radical Christianity.

  318. Some of you saw

  319. the movie, was

  320. it last year?

  321. The one, what was

  322. the name of that one?

  323. The Jesus Revolution.

  324. That's my era.

  325. We were in the

  326. Midwest, so we weren't

  327. quite as crazy as

  328. they were out there

  329. on the West Coast

  330. except for Pam.

  331. She grew up out

  332. there, so she's the

  333. wild, crazy one.

  334. Uh, but we were a

  335. little, a little

  336. more reserved back

  337. here in the Midwest.

  338. And for those of you

  339. who don't know Keith

  340. Green's music, he

  341. was, he was a calm,

  342. passive fellow who

  343. pounded on a grand

  344. piano when he sang

  345. and never looked at.

  346. He, he didn't have

  347. music on the piano.

  348. He just . He just

  349. played all over that

  350. thing and he would

  351. just stare like this

  352. while he's playing,

  353. look at the audience

  354. and sing from his

  355. heart and write calm

  356. little music like

  357. the church asleep

  358. in the light, in the

  359. midst of a darkness

  360. that it just can't

  361. fight because it's

  362. asleep in the light.

  363. Jesus rose from the

  364. dead and you can't

  365. even get out of bed.

  366. You know, it's

  367. just passive little

  368. stuff like that.

  369. So that is what

  370. woke me up out of,

  371. out of total sleep

  372. in that church

  373. that I grew up in.

  374. And

  375. so I came home

  376. that summer and

  377. I got to work.

  378. We had about this

  379. group right here,

  380. no more than U

  381. three rows, and

  382. I thought, hey.

  383. They asked me, so

  384. I'm going for it.

  385. And I did.

  386. And several of

  387. those kids are still

  388. following the Lord to

  389. this day that they had

  390. never even been around

  391. a place where the

  392. gospel was presented,

  393. that they should give

  394. their heart to Jesus.

  395. And uh, so we closed

  396. this summer with

  397. a special event.

  398. We are what Keith

  399. Green used to call.

  400. We were a high

  401. steeple, few people

  402. type of church, big

  403. stained glass windows

  404. and beautiful pews and

  405. beautiful everything

  406. but nothing inside.

  407. So I had these

  408. kids all fired

  409. up as well as me.

  410. And so we, we had

  411. stained glass windows

  412. that were almost

  413. as big as the whole

  414. front of the church.

  415. And the sun rose

  416. right behind that

  417. stained glass window.

  418. And so 10 o'clock

  419. on Sunday morning,

  420. they let us have the

  421. whole service and we

  422. worked all day Friday

  423. and Saturday and we

  424. darkened every window

  425. anywhere where you

  426. could open the front

  427. door of the church

  428. and that would be

  429. the only light that

  430. would come in any

  431. window in that whole

  432. area was blacked out.

  433. You couldn't even

  434. see 10 o'clock in

  435. the morning with

  436. the sun shining.

  437. You couldn't see your

  438. hand in front of your

  439. face because we wanted

  440. to have an effect.

  441. And so we did

  442. the whole morning

  443. and presented the

  444. gospel and had the

  445. kids help do that.

  446. And then we

  447. song sang this

  448. nice little song.

  449. So why don't you

  450. guys come up?

  451. We'll sing that.

  452. That'll give us some

  453. background here.

  454. Tony can use this

  455. microphone 'cause

  456. you didn't have one.

  457. What's that?

  458. It won't work.

  459. Okay.

  460. Alright.

  461. Here, you can

  462. stand over here.

  463. I'll stand with you.

  464. You're gonna mouth it?

  465. Yeah.

  466. . You got Turkey?

  467. . Were you born when

  468. this came out?

  469. Uh, no.

  470. No.

  471. That's what I thought.

  472. You're stepping

  473. on my cord?

  474. No, you were

  475. born in 1972.

  476. Okay.

  477. I was.

  478. Okay.

  479. Thank you.

  480. . Okay.

  481. It's a really

  482. tough song.

  483. It's not.

  484. It's not that one.

  485. It's not up there.

  486. Don't put,

  487. just back up.

  488. Kill that.

  489. There you go.

  490. Thank you very much.

  491. You have to

  492. just listen.

  493. The words are

  494. really hard.

  495. Go for it.

  496. Guns and

  497. I wish

  498. children die.

  499. The days grew

  500. cold of bread.

  501. Buy a bag of, I wish

  502. we all been ready.

  503. No time.

  504. Change her mind.

  505. She hears.

  506. She turns her head.

  507. She, oh, I

  508. messed it up.

  509. We knew we didn't

  510. go to the forest.

  511. Yeah, we did.

  512. Up, yeah.

  513. How can you mess up

  514. something so simple?

  515. Man, there's no time.

  516. Let's go with there.

  517. Okay.

  518. If you know

  519. what, stand up

  520. and say No, no.

  521. We're gonna

  522. do the, the, I

  523. missed the line.

  524. Okay.

  525. It's my, it's my

  526. bad, and I was in.

  527. You were alive

  528. back then.

  529. I was in high school

  530. when this came out.

  531. You were in college.

  532. Okay.

  533. Okay, I got it son.

  534. I was there.

  535. I got it.

  536. live was filled with

  537. guns and wars and

  538. everyone got on the

  539. children died.

  540. The case cold bread

  541. would a bag of

  542. I wish.

  543. All bed ready?

  544. There's no time to

  545. change your mind.

  546. The sun is come

  547. and you've been

  548. left behind.

  549. Hear noise turns.

  550. I wish we'd all

  551. been ready to and

  552. coming up a little

  553. one disappear and

  554. one less than each.

  555. I wish we'd

  556. all been ready.

  557. There's no time to

  558. change your mind.

  559. This is come, you've

  560. been left behind.

  561. There's no time to

  562. change your mind

  563. out that you have

  564. been so like the

  565. father called,

  566. the demons died.

  567. The is hung and

  568. you've been left.

  569. Thank you guys.

  570. Now, that was

  571. resurrected out of

  572. a long time ago,

  573. and thank you guys

  574. for doing that.

  575. They, uh, that Sunday

  576. morning we got to

  577. the point where they

  578. worked really hard.

  579. We had one

  580. makeshift spotlight.

  581. Somebody had,

  582. technology

  583. wasn't quite as

  584. good back then.

  585. We had a really bright

  586. flashlight that we

  587. made a cone out of,

  588. and they were up in

  589. the balcony about

  590. as far away as this,

  591. and they shown it

  592. through that thing.

  593. And at just the

  594. moment when we got

  595. to the end of it,

  596. the kids thought

  597. this was great.

  598. And it got to the

  599. point, it said, you've

  600. been left behind the

  601. last time through it

  602. went, you've been left

  603. and everything went

  604. totally dark and they

  605. just quit and held.

  606. Well, that had an

  607. impact on our church.

  608. Most of 'em

  609. didn't know what

  610. to do with it.

  611. 'cause like I said,

  612. our pastor wasn't

  613. saved, but one of

  614. the young guys from

  615. the community that

  616. I had befriended

  617. on the basketball

  618. team, basketball's

  619. important.

  620. I was a senior and he

  621. was a freshman and we

  622. spent time with him.

  623. And that young man

  624. was . He wa he was

  625. a all conference,

  626. basketball, football,

  627. played baseball

  628. in the summer.

  629. He was unbelievable.

  630. Everybody wanted to

  631. be Mark Bradford.

  632. All the guys, all

  633. the girls wanted

  634. to go with Mark.

  635. And that summer

  636. when we were home,

  637. mark gave his

  638. heart to Jesus

  639. for real.

  640. And we lived in town.

  641. The area was

  642. about the size of

  643. Sheridan over here.

  644. And when Mark got

  645. saved, , he didn't

  646. have a car, so he

  647. ran, it was about a

  648. mile and a half from

  649. where he got saved

  650. all the way across

  651. town to his church

  652. where he went and he

  653. talked to his pastor.

  654. He had a lot of dead

  655. churches in that town.

  656. He went in and told

  657. him that he'd given

  658. his heart to Jesus

  659. and he was ready to do

  660. whatever it was that

  661. God wanted him to do.

  662. And his pastor said,

  663. that's great, but

  664. don't let that ruin

  665. your life, son.

  666. And it's like,

  667. oh, okay.

  668. So he left there

  669. and he ran a mile

  670. the other way to his

  671. house and told his mom

  672. and dad, I just gave

  673. my heart to Jesus.

  674. And he ended up,

  675. they were ecstatic

  676. because they knew

  677. the Lord and.

  678. It was just great.

  679. So then he ran

  680. a half a mile.

  681. The other way.

  682. Guy had to be an

  683. athlete 'cause I

  684. couldn't have ran that

  685. far the first time.

  686. So he runs a half

  687. a mile to his

  688. girlfriend's house.

  689. Okay.

  690. She's kind of just,

  691. you know, the, the

  692. mirror of him, she's

  693. the prom queen,

  694. she's got everything

  695. going for her.

  696. Everybody wants

  697. to date her.

  698. And he goes in and he

  699. tells her, I just gave

  700. my heart to Jesus.

  701. Now, he'd been living

  702. just like any sinful

  703. young man who had the

  704. world by the tail.

  705. And they'd gotten

  706. involved physically

  707. and he said,

  708. I need you to

  709. forgive me for what

  710. I have done to you.

  711. And

  712. I. It'll never

  713. happen again.

  714. And she said, if

  715. that's the way you're

  716. gonna live, then

  717. get outta my life.

  718. 'cause I don't want

  719. anything to do with

  720. you ever again.

  721. And he left.

  722. And you know, most

  723. young men would

  724. just be crushed.

  725. He wasn't, he met it.

  726. So he went to

  727. our high school

  728. there that fall.

  729. I was back in Bible

  730. college and I got a

  731. few calls from Mark

  732. and he said, I, I

  733. feel like I need to

  734. start a Bible study

  735. at our high school.

  736. And we had about 400

  737. kids in high school,

  738. and you could name

  739. the people who really

  740. we're Christians

  741. on one hand and

  742. still have room to

  743. count some more.

  744. And he said, I

  745. just feel like

  746. I gotta do it.

  747. All of his friends

  748. and the ball teams

  749. all made fun of him,

  750. but Mark persisted.

  751. So he said, school

  752. starts at 7 45, we're

  753. gonna meet at the

  754. school at a quarter

  755. of seven every

  756. Tuesday morning.

  757. So he started and

  758. all of his friends

  759. making fun of him,

  760. and before the month

  761. was over, they had

  762. 75 kids coming every

  763. Tuesday morning.

  764. They had to start

  765. another one.

  766. After school,

  767. they had 35 more

  768. kids coming then.

  769. Now

  770. it was really

  771. fun because the

  772. pastor's, two kids

  773. from my old church.

  774. Went to the

  775. Bible study and

  776. they got saved.

  777. You know what

  778. they did?

  779. They went home

  780. and talked to

  781. their mom and dad.

  782. Mom said, that's

  783. just a hoax.

  784. They led dad who'd

  785. been a pastor for

  786. 25 years to the

  787. Lord, gave his heart

  788. to Jesus 'cause

  789. his kids led him.

  790. Now, I grew up with

  791. a thing that, man,

  792. if you're gonna

  793. follow Jesus, it's

  794. gonna cost you

  795. everything you've got.

  796. But if you do, it'll

  797. rock the world.

  798. And just like

  799. that little world

  800. there, it did, and

  801. this song and all

  802. the things that went

  803. along with that.

  804. Etched in my mind

  805. that, boy, this was

  806. God reaching out.

  807. That movie is . It's

  808. old, it's dated,

  809. but it's pretty

  810. solid, right, Robin?

  811. Get your attention

  812. that it does, and

  813. there are different

  814. things and beliefs

  815. about the rapture,

  816. but that one gets

  817. your attention.

  818. And I always thought

  819. of that as the whole

  820. thing about being left

  821. behind in God's grace.

  822. And Keith Green

  823. was once asked,

  824. he said, why?

  825. Why does God let

  826. things keep going on?

  827. They're so bad.

  828. And he said,

  829. it's because

  830. of God's mercy that

  831. he lets sin continue.

  832. Now you think

  833. about that.

  834. That's I. That doesn't

  835. even seem right.

  836. But he said if

  837. God would've come

  838. back in 1972,

  839. think how many people

  840. would've never had

  841. the chance today.

  842. Sin persists, but

  843. so does grace.

  844. Well, that got

  845. me thinking about

  846. a few things and

  847. I wanted to, uh,

  848. share them.

  849. I even brought my

  850. magnifying glass,

  851. but the light's good

  852. enough, so I think

  853. I can read it here

  854. over in Titus

  855. chapter three.

  856. Well, well so

  857. much for that.

  858. I won't be using that.

  859. Says at one time,

  860. we too were foolish,

  861. disobedient, deceived,

  862. and enslaved by all

  863. kinds of passions

  864. and pleasures, and

  865. we believed in malice

  866. and envy and being

  867. hateful and hatred,

  868. hating one another.

  869. But when the kindness

  870. and love of God our

  871. savior appeared, he

  872. saved us not because

  873. of righteous things

  874. that we had done, but

  875. because of his mercy.

  876. And I think this

  877. is what got me

  878. going on this.

  879. We interchange

  880. mercy and grace.

  881. They're not the same.

  882. We are saved by grace.

  883. We're not

  884. saved by mercy.

  885. Mercy

  886. is where God allows

  887. us the room to come

  888. back and find grace.

  889. Now

  890. I know people that

  891. have struggled with

  892. sin in their lives

  893. and they've struggled

  894. and struggled

  895. and struggled.

  896. And you think,

  897. okay, how long is

  898. God going to wait?

  899. How long is God

  900. going to be patient?

  901. And all over the New

  902. Testament and the Old

  903. Testament talks about

  904. God's great mercy that

  905. he has and that mercy

  906. is what, as I put it,

  907. keeps the door open.

  908. One of the other guys

  909. that used sang had a,

  910. had a song in which

  911. he talks about Adam,

  912. uh, Don Francisco.

  913. It's kind of crazy.

  914. Almost all the

  915. old people that I

  916. listened to were.

  917. You guys might not

  918. like the music,

  919. but boy, they

  920. were radical.

  921. They were radical.

  922. And they would sing.

  923. And he's talking

  924. about Adam always

  925. loved that.

  926. 'cause our youngest

  927. son was Adam and

  928. he fit, but said

  929. the voice of

  930. God came walking

  931. through the garden.

  932. This was after Adam

  933. fell and he was

  934. hiding from God.

  935. And he said, the voice

  936. of God says, Adam.

  937. Adam, where are you?

  938. And towards the end of

  939. the song, it switches

  940. to where the last

  941. Adam, which not the

  942. last Adam, but the

  943. sons of Adam, and

  944. where he's calling

  945. out and saying,

  946. Adam, Adam, come

  947. out of the darkness.

  948. Come out of there

  949. before it's time to

  950. finally shut the door.

  951. And we live today

  952. in mercy.

  953. Not grace.

  954. When people are

  955. committing sins,

  956. Christians are

  957. sinning and they say,

  958. well, it's covered

  959. by God's grace.

  960. No it's not.

  961. If God has mercy on

  962. you, he's giving you

  963. the time to make the

  964. changes in your life

  965. that you need to make.

  966. He's not saying

  967. it's okay.

  968. Jesus died

  969. because of

  970. those actions

  971. and activities.

  972. He died so that

  973. we didn't have

  974. to be there.

  975. The songs that you

  976. guys were singing this

  977. morning, the same God

  978. that the power that

  979. rose Jesus from the

  980. dead lives in you,

  981. and if he's not

  982. living in us, we.

  983. I'm sorry, I, I might

  984. get preachy here yet

  985. if I'm not careful.

  986. I've tried to be all

  987. calm and everything

  988. this morning, but I

  989. could get preachy.

  990. We make so many

  991. excuses for behavior

  992. that is unbecoming

  993. a son of God or a

  994. daughter of God,

  995. and we try to make

  996. it sound somehow

  997. theologically, okay?

  998. It's not, we

  999. need to be people

  1000. who are drawing

  1001. people to Jesus.

  1002. I challenge you.

  1003. Go, go watch

  1004. this movie.

  1005. You, you'll think

  1006. it's cheesy as all

  1007. get out, right Ted?

  1008. But it's good, right?

  1009. So you, you, you,

  1010. you find the people

  1011. in there, the young

  1012. people who are

  1013. willing to, to listen.

  1014. Give their heart

  1015. to Jesus and others

  1016. who just are gonna

  1017. do whatever they

  1018. want to do because

  1019. it's all okay.

  1020. And we find that

  1021. very thing today.

  1022. Now,

1023. a thief in the night,

  1024. and it's on Prime.

  1025. If you have

  1026. Prime, it's free.

  1027. It's about an hour

  1028. and three minutes,

  1029. and Robin will come

  1030. over and watch it

  1031. with you so that

  1032. you're okay with it.

  1033. She said the

  1034. reviews on it say

  1035. it's a Christian

  1036. horror movie.

  1037. What

  1038. is that?

  1039. A personal testimony?

  1040. Yes.

  1041. Okay.

  1042. But Susie can tell

  1043. you that that movie

  1044. changed her life.

  1045. Okay.

  1046. You see, we, we

  1047. are so insulated.

  1048. Today and we're,

  1049. we're stuck over In

  1050. Ephesians chapter

  1051. two, verse eight

  1052. tells us that we

  1053. are saved by grace.

  1054. God's grace comes

  1055. in and transforms

  1056. who we are

  1057. and we're, we are

  1058. trying so hard today

  1059. to be acceptable that

  1060. the things that we

  1061. do are looked upon

  1062. in favor with, with

1063. the rest of the world

  1064. and the people don't

1065. look at us and say,

  1066. well, you're weird

  1067. guys.

  1068. Scripture says

  1069. we're peculiar.

  1070. That's scriptural.

  1071. If you're

  1072. not peculiar,

  1073. there's something

  1074. wrong with you.

  1075. I. Isn't that

  1076. interesting?

  1077. Well, the world

  1078. wants us to conform.

  1079. Jesus is saying,

  1080. whatever you do,

  1081. don't do that.

  1082. Don't do that.

  1083. You know, talking

  1084. to Mark, that young

  1085. man, you know.

1086. Can you, some of you

1087. are 16, some of you

  1088. have been 16, some

  1089. of you're hoping

  1090. you'll live to 16.

  1091. Can you imagine a

  1092. 16-year-old willing

  1093. to go and ask

  1094. forgiveness of a

  1095. young lady that he'd

  1096. been intimate with

  1097. and being ridiculed

  1098. by all of your

  1099. friends and standing

  1100. strong in the midst

  1101. of all of that?

  1102. No.

  1103. They don't do that

  1104. because they haven't

  1105. been raised to be

1106. men or women of God.

  1107. If you're gonna be

  1108. a man of God, you're

  1109. gonna pay for it.

  1110. If you're going to

  1111. do what is right,

  1112. you're gonna pay.

  1113. If you go through

  1114. your life trying

  1115. to avoid pain for

  1116. what is right, then

1117. you pay in the end.

  1118. Now,

  1119. one of the other

  1120. things that, uh, Eric

  1121. likes to talk about

1122. all the time, the, uh,

  1123. the persecuted church

  1124. around the world,

  1125. and, you know,

  1126. the church in

  1127. America is so.

  1128. Absolutely spoiled.

  1129. You know, we came

  1130. this morning and

  1131. parking lot wasn't

  1132. plowed.

  1133. Okay.

1134. I was down here at

  1135. six o'clock trying to

  1136. figure out whether if

  1137. it was icy underneath,

1138. it's easier to walk on

1139. the snow and the snow.

  1140. Plowers calling over

  1141. to Andy over there

  1142. in, in, in, uh,

  1143. Ohio, I guess that's

  1144. where they're at.

  1145. And so Andy's calling

1146. me and we're back and

  1147. forth and I called

1148. Josh and Tom and they

1149. got out here and they

  1150. shoveled off the lines

1151. so we'd know where to

1152. park and put out some

1153. salt and, and, uh, in

  1154. between time, why the

  1155. snowplow guy got here.

  1156. Plenty of time

  1157. to get everything

  1158. plowed off out there.

  1159. He broke a brake

1160. line and he just sat

  1161. there for half an

  1162. hour 'cause there

  1163. was nothing he could

  1164. do and poor guy.

  1165. So once you were

  1166. all in here and

  1167. church started, why

  1168. two other guys came

  1169. and helped him.

  1170. So you're probably

  1171. plowed into your

  1172. parking spot,

  1173. but good luck.

1174. You know, I can preach

  1175. till it melts that,

  1176. that's no problem.

  1177. I can do it.

  1178. I can you you

  1179. wanna challenge me?

  1180. No.

  1181. Okay.

  1182. I didn't think so.

  1183. Okay.

  1184. . I think it's okay,

  1185. but the driveway

  1186. getting in and out

  1187. and through the cars

  1188. will all be fine.

  1189. But it's just like,

  1190. I sitting back

  1191. here thinking now

  1192. this is just like

  1193. going to church.

1194. This is like, it is.

  1195. We, we uh, I

  1196. called off church

  1197. once in 50 years.

  1198. That's 'cause I

  1199. couldn't get out of

  1200. my own driveway with

  1201. four wheel drive

  1202. and otherwise always

  1203. went because somebody

  1204. would show up.

  1205. Now if we were

  1206. overseas, they'd walk

  1207. through this stuff

  1208. to get to church

  1209. 'cause they needed it.

1210. You see that's one of

  1211. the things where I'm,

  1212. I'm just old school.

  1213. I need to

  1214. hear from God.

  1215. I don't care whether

  1216. you deliver the

  1217. message, I deliver the

  1218. message, or Noah does.

  1219. But I need to

  1220. hear from God.

1221. I need to be involved

  1222. in what he's doing.

1223. I need to be in the

  1224. trenches out here

  1225. fighting for people.

  1226. I sent a text to

  1227. Reor who is in

  1228. London this morning.

  1229. You laughed.

  1230. So he came, but

  1231. uh, he's got an

  1232. uncle that is

  1233. Got Parkinson's and

  1234. getting near to the

1235. end of his life that

  1236. doesn't know Jesus.

1237. And so right before it

1238. was time to preach, I

1239. sent him a text that

  1240. said, man, praying for

  1241. you and praying for

  1242. his salvation because

  1243. there's nothing

  1244. more important than

  1245. him finding Jesus.

  1246. Okay.

  1247. How many things I'm

  1248. giving you just a a

  1249. little view into my

  1250. mind and my heart.

  1251. How many things

  1252. are more important

  1253. than somebody you

  1254. love finding Jesus.

1255. Now that's easy to say

  1256. that no, there aren't,

  1257. except for when it

  1258. comes to putting

  1259. that on the line.

  1260. There's all

  1261. kinds of things.

  1262. I don't want

  1263. to embarrass

  1264. myself or them.

  1265. I. Our old thing

  1266. was, you know,

  1267. if the neighbor's

  1268. house was burning

  1269. down and they're

  1270. in, they're asleep.

  1271. What are gonna do?

  1272. Say, well, I don't

  1273. want to disturb them.

  1274. They're resting and

  1275. let 'em burn up.

  1276. Or you're gonna

  1277. go over there and

  1278. beat on the door.

  1279. Do everything you

1280. have to do, go in

  1281. and drag them out

  1282. of that house.

  1283. See, that's the

  1284. kind of evangelism

  1285. I'm used to.

  1286. I'll do whatever

  1287. it takes.

  1288. Somebody gives me an

  1289. opening, I'm going,

1290. if they don't give me

  1291. an opening, I'm going,

  1292. I've been telling

  1293. all these guys

  1294. how I work lately.

  1295. It's always the

  1296. call before you

  1297. come so you make

  1298. sure they're there.

  1299. And I said, if I do

  1300. that, they'll be gone

  1301. when I get there.

  1302. So I call after

  1303. I come, I get

  1304. in the driveway

  1305. and then call.

  1306. Then they say, oh,

  1307. we're, we're gone.

  1308. No, you're not.

  1309. You're just coming

  1310. outta your house.

  1311. And I'm sitting right

  1312. here watching you.

  1313. You know, that's

  1314. how I work.

  1315. Uh, I've been thrown

  1316. and I tell people

  1317. I've been thrown out

  1318. of better places than

  1319. this, and I have,

  1320. but I don't care

  1321. because I wanna see

  1322. people find Jesus.

1323. And you know, when I

  1324. lose track of that,

1325. then I am no earthly

  1326. good whatsoever.

  1327. It doesn't matter

  1328. how good the

  1329. retirement is.

  1330. It doesn't matter

1331. what I get to do.

1332. When I lose track of

  1333. that, my heart's gone.

  1334. It just doesn't even

  1335. matter whether I

  1336. live or die because

  1337. my life's over

  1338. to live is Christ

1339. and to die is gain.

  1340. We get caught

  1341. up in feelings.

1342. We get caught up in

  1343. misunderstandings with

1344. people, and we have no

1345. grasp on what it is.

  1346. That means

  1347. something eternally.

  1348. We hold grudges,

  1349. we get upset about

  1350. things that all

  1351. of heaven doesn't

  1352. give one rip about,

  1353. and God's people

  1354. have to take those

1355. things and let 'em go.

  1356. They don't matter.

  1357. And if they do

  1358. matter, then you're

  1359. not walking with him.

  1360. You have no mercy.

  1361. And isn't it

  1362. interesting?

  1363. One of the other

  1364. great quotes that

  1365. one of my friends

  1366. gave me, excuse me,

  1367. was the only people

  1368. that can show mercy

  1369. are the people who

  1370. know they need.

  1371. I. Mercy.

  1372. It is an effort

  1373. to follow God, not

  1374. because it's so

  1375. hard to follow him.

  1376. It's so hard to

  1377. shut out the things

  1378. that the world is

  1379. bombarding us with.

  1380. Well, we're not

  1381. gonna sing that

  1382. song, so you're,

  1383. you're lucky at that.

  1384. We'll, we'll

  1385. avoid, right.

  1386. You don't, you

  1387. don't have to

  1388. shovel out, Brian.

  1389. It's okay.

  1390. We'll help you

  1391. Uh, well,

  1392. all this is, this

  1393. morning is just

  1394. kind of a glimpse

  1395. into the heart is

  1396. somebody who started

  1397. the church here,

  1398. what that was like.

  1399. I've just never

  1400. lost that.

  1401. I may be 72 years

  1402. old, but I'm

  1403. . I'm still your age

  1404. up here, willing

1405. to go out and do

  1406. whatever it takes.

  1407. Just crazy stuff.

  1408. You guys have heard

  1409. my stories over the

  1410. year, and I won't

  1411. tell them again, but

  1412. I've, I've gone into

  1413. just ridiculously

  1414. idiotic places that

  1415. nobody in their right

  1416. mind would go in.

  1417. And just to prove

1418. I'm not in my right

  1419. mind, my mind has

1420. left me and has gone

  1421. on ahead somewhere

  1422. because I don't care.

  1423. One of the most

  1424. fun times I ever

  1425. had was in here

  1426. at the hospital

  1427. getting a, uh, some

  1428. sort of a thing

  1429. that they thought

  1430. could be fatal.

  1431. I'd waited and waited

  1432. and waited to have

  1433. this procedure in

  1434. the waiting room, and

  1435. I kept saying, I've

  1436. got an appointment

1437. that I have to be at.

  1438. If we can't get

  1439. it done, then

  1440. I'm leaving.

  1441. And the nurses kept

  1442. saying, you can't,

1443. if this is wrong, you

1444. may not make it back.

  1445. And I said, well,

  1446. it doesn't matter.

  1447. He said, your

  1448. appointment can't

  1449. be that important.

1450. And I said, it is.

  1451. There's a man that

  1452. I've been talking to

  1453. about Jesus and he's

  1454. finally agreed to talk

1455. to me face to face.

  1456. It's right up

  1457. here in Cicero.

  1458. And he said,

  1459. this is the only

  1460. time I've got.

  1461. And I said, I

  1462. don't care what it

  1463. costs, I will be

  1464. at that meeting.

  1465. And it was really

  1466. interesting.

  1467. They said,

  1468. we're sorry.

1469. And after just a few

  1470. minutes, this other

1471. nurse comes in and she

1472. said, I know the Lord.

1473. And I know how strong

  1474. that is in you.

  1475. She said,

  1476. come with me.

  1477. We're gonna get

  1478. your scan taken

  1479. care of right now.

  1480. She took me in,

  1481. we got scanned.

  1482. I got out there and I

1483. was up at the meeting

  1484. and I didn't miss it.

  1485. That guy gave his

  1486. heart to Jesus.

  1487. Now

  1488. you see there,

  1489. there's a point.

1490. And guys, I am so

  1491. far from perfect.

  1492. It's ridiculous.

  1493. If you need

  1494. testimony of that,

  1495. just talk to Pam.

  1496. In fact, just this

  1497. last night she was

1498. telling me to stop it.

  1499. Right?

  1500. Aha.

  1501. Something like that.

1502. It was, it was much

  1503. kinder because she's

  1504. such a sweet lady.

1505. All the rest of you.

  1506. No, that, uh.

  1507. The one thing is,

  1508. man, you know, the

  1509. thrill of my life

  1510. has been God allowing

1511. me to be a part of

  1512. what he was doing.

  1513. It wasn't him

  1514. being a part of

  1515. what I was doing.

  1516. You know, black

  1517. Bee's book.

  1518. He said, find out

  1519. where God's working

  1520. and go join him.

  1521. That's kind of

  1522. the, the whole

  1523. theory of my life.

  1524. If God was going

  1525. someplace, I wanna

1526. be a part of it.

  1527. Let's go.

  1528. It'll be fun.

  1529. That's how we built a

  1530. few church buildings

  1531. around here and

  1532. someplace else.

  1533. They were always

  1534. gonna be fun.

  1535. They weren't all that

1536. much fun, but they got

1537. built and we got see

1538. God move and God work.

  1539. And most people

  1540. just never even

  1541. see those miracles

  1542. because some of you

1543. gotta be able to say

  1544. the rest of this.

  1545. Where do

  1546. miracles happen?

  1547. A little louder

  1548. than that.

  1549. Come on.

  1550. Where?

  1551. Edge of disaster.

  1552. On the edge

  1553. of disaster.

  1554. That's right.

  1555. And where does

  1556. God lead us?

1557. He leads us up to

1558. the sea with a whole

  1559. army behind us and

  1560. he parts the sea.

  1561. That's what he does.

  1562. But the miracles

  1563. don't happen unless

1564. you go and you follow

  1565. him to where that

  1566. miracle will happen.

  1567. They don't happen

  1568. sitting in your

  1569. easy chair waiting

  1570. for God to do

  1571. some fancy thing.

  1572. It's the power

  1573. of God at work.

  1574. It's a simple old

  1575. song, that comes

  1576. along and a simple

  1577. old movie that was

  1578. Sally that changed

  1579. thousands of lives

  1580. because people were

  1581. just dumb enough

1582. to give it a try.

  1583. Let's see what we

  1584. can do with it.

  1585. Let's see

  1586. what'll happen.

  1587. Let's go try, let's

  1588. get 12 kids together

  1589. and put on something

1590. to try to wake up

  1591. a whole 200 people

  1592. in a church that's

  1593. deader than hay.

1594. But let's not just sit

  1595. here and do nothing.

  1596. Okay?

  1597. Well,

  1598. God help us.

  1599. Lord, thank you

  1600. for allowing me to

1601. be a part of you.

  1602. Thank you for having

  1603. mercy on me when

  1604. I have struggled

  1605. and through grace

  1606. changing me and my

1607. heart, and as I go on,

  1608. Lord, I'm, I'm old.

  1609. That's my, that's

  1610. my answer that I

  1611. give people now

  1612. when they, when they

  1613. ask me how I am, I

  1614. just say, I'm old.

  1615. Lord, I'm tireder

  1616. than I've ever been.

  1617. I get more discouraged

  1618. about life than I

  1619. ever have before.

  1620. I hurt more.

  1621. I have more

  1622. financial woes than

  1623. than ever before.

  1624. And

  1625. Lord, they

  1626. don't matter.

  1627. Just having the

  1628. opportunity to go

  1629. and sit and have

  1630. dinner with a couple,

  1631. having breakfast with

  1632. somebody else, talking

  1633. to somebody that

  1634. doesn't know Jesus,

1635. trying to tell a guy

  1636. with, with a broken

  1637. break line to not

  1638. worry, it's okay.

  1639. We'll be all right.

  1640. Instead of, as he

  1641. said, his usual

  1642. fair when people are

  1643. yelling and hollering

  1644. about why he didn't

  1645. get it done sooner

  1646. and why doesn't

  1647. he call somebody?

1648. Get it done right now.

1649. Lord, it's so much fun

1650. to try to do what

  1651. you would do and

  1652. just bring some

  1653. light into darkness.

1654. All I ask for me,

  1655. Lord, is that you'd

  1656. continue to give me

  1657. those opportunities

  1658. and I'd focus on

  1659. them less or more

  1660. than less on all

  1661. the other stuff.

  1662. 'cause if you give

1663. me years to live, I'm

  1664. sure it's not gonna

1665. be even as good as

1666. it is right now, but

1667. if I can serve you.

  1668. If I can make a

  1669. difference, then

1670. I want to do it.

1671. I wanna stay alive as

1672. long as I live, Lord,

  1673. and for our church,

  1674. for our young people,

  1675. for our couples,

  1676. our families, Lord,

1677. put in them a fire

1678. to live for you, to

  1679. make a difference in

  1680. the people's lives

  1681. that they touch.

  1682. Lord, I don't want

1683. us as a country or

  1684. a community or as

  1685. church to get so

  1686. calm and relaxed

  1687. and, and stayed that

  1688. you have to bring

  1689. disaster upon us

1690. until we turn to you.

1691. Help us turn to you

1692. with all of our heart

  1693. and our soul, and

  1694. our mind, and our

  1695. strength, everything

  1696. that we have.

  1697. Help us to do

  1698. that today.

  1699. In Jesus' name.

  1700. I ask it.

  1701. Amen.

1702. Okay, so we have to do

  1703. announcements at the

  1704. end, and I don't like

  1705. doing announcements

  1706. at the end.

  1707. I'm old.

  1708. I told you that.

  1709. Right?

1710. So, Pam, come up here.

  1711. You're gonna have to

  1712. do the announcements

  1713. since you just,

  1714. you'll deal with

  1715. Patty afterwards,

  1716. since she won't come.

  1717. So I can't believe

  1718. you, Patty, you're

1719. gonna make Pam get up

  1720. here and she's sick

  1721. and everything else.

  1722. It's just, it's

  1723. just wonderful.

  1724. Patty.

  1725. Thank you.

  1726. It is all yours.

  1727. I've already talked

1728. all I want to, okay.

  1729. So Melissa, come

  1730. join me, girl.

  1731. Melissa and I happen

  1732. to be dressed in

  1733. the same sweater

  1734. today, unbeknownst

  1735. to either of us.

  1736. Oh, there's

  1737. nothing here.

  1738. It's all down here.

  1739. I, I know, honey.

1740. I'll get outta the way

  1741. you need.

  1742. Oh, thank you.

  1743. Here we go, girl.

  1744. Okay.

  1745. Uh, February.

  1746. Okay.

  1747. . Yeah.

  1748. Fa February.

  1749. Fun.

  1750. Let's see what's fun.

  1751. Okay, go for it.

1752. Oh, is this ba Bam.

  1753. So today it's six,

  1754. so we're still doing

  1755. it even though it's

  1756. nasty out, right?

  1757. Yep.

  1758. Okay.

  1759. Six o'clock youth

  1760. group over in the

  1761. other building.

  1762. Right.

  1763. Okay.

  1764. And college age-ish.

  1765. Small group.

  1766. No.

  1767. So this afternoon

  1768. the small group is

  1769. helping Olivia move.

  1770. Right.

1771. Um, going to lunch at

  1772. Culver's, but if you

  1773. can't be at Culver's,

  1774. then by two o'clock

  1775. be at Olivia's house

1776. down in, on the south

  1777. side of Carmel and

  1778. y'all know where that

  1779. is then all that.

  1780. And if you don't.

  1781. Then talk amongst

  1782. yourselves and

  1783. figure it out.

  1784. Right?

  1785. See Olivia and

  1786. yeah, see Olivia.

  1787. Two o'clock.

  1788. Alright.

  1789. Upcoming

  1790. financial piece.

  1791. Beginning

  1792. February 18th.

  1793. Um, Tim Darnell is

  1794. probably a couple's

  1795. retreat, so he's your

  1796. person of contact.

  1797. Yes.

  1798. Wednesday night

  1799. group starting.

  1800. Um, they've already

  1801. started, so the

  1802. women were supposed

  1803. to meet last week,

  1804. but we, the weather

  1805. preempted everything.

  1806. So, um, this coming

  1807. Wednesday will be

  1808. the men, right?

  1809. They're the odds.

  1810. The odds first

  1811. and third, third

  1812. men are the evens.

  1813. Third, we are, we

  1814. are the evens and

  1815. nothing on the

  1816. fifth week, right?

  1817. Right.

  1818. Uh, first Peter

  1819. Small group

  1820. coming this week.

  1821. I really know

  1822. nothing about this.

1823. So this is just kind

  1824. of behind the scenes

  1825. stuff going on.

1826. You need to get ahold

  1827. of Dax because not

  1828. all the small groups

  1829. are meeting because

  1830. of Wednesday night.

  1831. So you all probably

  1832. know who you

  1833. are with that.

  1834. And so, but

  1835. if you have a

  1836. question, see Dax.

  1837. Or get a hold

  1838. of him 'cause

  1839. he's at Marriage

  1840. retreat right now.

  1841. Mm-hmm . So.

  1842. Mm-hmm . Ladies

  1843. Gallant's event

  1844. coming soon.

  1845. You've all

  1846. gotten a personal

  1847. invitation I think.

  1848. I think so.

  1849. Yeah.

  1850. And so just, yeah.

  1851. Roll with that.

  1852. This coming

  1853. weekend, the 22nd.

  1854. Uhhuh.

  1855. . Yep.

  1856. On Saturday.

  1857. Yep.

  1858. Yep.

  1859. Uh, rock solid.

  1860. Lock in.

  1861. Sounds like

  1862. an awful idea.

1863. I did that one time.

  1864. , I think I slept on

  1865. the front row of

  1866. chairs while children

  1867. jumped over me.

  1868. Unless you're a teen

  1869. then it's a blast.

  1870. I'm getting old,

  1871. as Marty says,

  1872. then it's a blast.

  1873. So Friday, February

  1874. 21st, 8:00 PM

  1875. through Saturday.

  1876. That's this

  1877. coming week.

  1878. Yeah.

  1879. Yeah.

  1880. That is.

  1881. It's coming Friday.

  1882. I'm so sorry.

  1883. Pray for our

  1884. youth leaders.

  1885. Yes.

  1886. Mary's retreat's

  1887. going on right now,

1888. so we may need to

  1889. pray them safely.

  1890. Home.

  1891. Mm-hmm . I don't know

  1892. if they got snow.

  1893. Anybody know?

  1894. No.

  1895. But anyhow, it's

1896. uh, we need to pray

  1897. them safely home

  1898. and I'm sure they're

  1899. having a great time.

  1900. That's why it's a

  1901. little sparse out

  1902. here 'cause it.

  1903. We have like 50

1904. people gone to that or

  1905. something like that.

  1906. Right?

  1907. Yeah.

  1908. Uh, super Bowl.

  1909. So we have the

  1910. yellow box outside,

  1911. and then I think

1912. we have a bucket in

1913. the front here, or a

  1914. bucket in the other.

  1915. In entryway.

  1916. Yeah, in the other

  1917. center there.

  1918. So you can bring

  1919. in soups this

  1920. month to fill up

  1921. our food pantry.

  1922. And that is February.

  1923. Fun at White Rock.

  1924. Ooh.

  1925. Short and sweet.

  1926. Yeah.
