  1. Kind of getting

  2. that, uh, warm

  3. churchy feeling.

  4. Alright.

  5. Hey, we had an amazing

  6. time last week on

  7. Marriage Retreat.

  8. Big thank you

  9. to everybody who

  10. helped hold down

  11. the fort and do some

  12. awesome things here.

  13. Uh, but I missed

  14. the opportunity to

  15. talk to all you guys

  16. about Valentine's

  17. Day, right?

  18. Some of you're just

  19. now remembering it

  20. was Valentine's Day

  21. and the big oops

  22. on your face, Kyle.

  23. I can see that.

  24. No big deal, man.

  25. You got next year.

  26. Don't stress it.

  27. Just kidding.

  28. I think.

  29. Just kidding.

  30. Maybe, maybe

  31. not, not just.

  32. Okay.

  33. Wow.

  34. Okay.

  35. Counseling session

  36. this afternoon.

  37. That'll be fun,

  38. Tory, Kyle.

  39. I'll make that happen.

  40. So Valentine's Day

  41. is still in the month

  42. of February, even

  43. though technically

  44. it was last week.

  45. So I was really on

  46. the fence about this.

  47. I was like, you know,

  48. I have some stuff I

  49. want to talk about.

  50. I'm kind of excited

  51. to talk about, but

  52. maybe, Lord, you got

  53. something different.

  54. It's cool.

  55. So I had this stuff

  56. all kind of in my head

  57. I wanted to share.

  58. And then I walked into

  59. my office yesterday

  60. and it was confirmed

  61. because after the

  62. Gallant Times's Day

  63. party, a bunch of

  64. ladies threw some

  65. balloons in my office.

  66. And the good news is

  67. a Renee signed her

  68. name on the board,

  69. which is just not

  70. how you roll, right?

  71. But she must have

  72. known we had cameras

  73. and all that stuff.

  74. So the truth is,

  75. uh, it was the

  76. confirmation I needed.

  77. And anybody who

  78. wants to come help

  79. me clean up my

  80. office after church,

  81. that'd be great.

  82. Uh, super fun.

  83. Spend a little gallant

  84. times's day weekend

  85. for the ladies.

  86. Three events

  87. yesterday and.

  88. All that good stuff.

  89. We had a great retreat

  90. time with couples

  91. and just some really

  92. good stuff that

  93. God's at work doing.

  94. So Valentine's

  95. Day is something I

  96. don't wanna miss the

  97. moment to talk about.

  98. Well, a topic that I

  99. was kind of looking

  100. back and, uh, I'm

  101. gonna do a sermon

  102. that I have never

  103. done on a topic I've

  104. really never talked

  105. about, like ever.

  106. Um, which is

  107. crazy to me.

  108. I mean, maybe, you

  109. know, kind of like

  110. from the edges

  111. I've touched on it.

  112. But like today, guys,

  113. you are in for the

  114. first ever White

  115. Rock kissing sermon.

  116. Yeah.

  117. Yeah.

  118. I'm gonna talk

  119. about kissing today.

  120. Right?

  121. Right.

  122. Some of you super

  123. excited, some of you

  124. super disappointed.

  125. Some of you like, I

  126. don't even remember

  127. how to do that.

  128. That's okay.

  129. Hang in there.

  130. It starts like

  131. riding a bike.

  132. No big deal.

  133. So let me clarify

  134. a couple things as

  135. we get into this

  136. kissing sermon.

  137. I just want to say

  138. this is not one of

  139. those sneaky tricks

  140. that I'm pulling

  141. where it's like, keep

  142. it simple, stupid.

  143. That's a great way

  144. to live, right?

  145. Just follow Jesus

  146. and do what he said.

  147. Keep it

  148. simple, stupid.

  149. Great principle.

  150. This is not a

  151. KISS principle.

  152. Nope.

  153. We're talking kissing.

  154. And for those of you

  155. who are thinking, ah,

  156. I think I know the

  157. angle, this is not a

  158. result of a recent,

  159. um, unpublished

  160. survey I did amongst

  161. White Rock guys

  162. in high school.

  163. 97.6% of high school

  164. guys wanna hear more

  165. sermons about kissing.

  166. I did not reference

  167. this as my motivation

  168. to share this

  169. message this morning.

  170. But high school

  171. guys don't feel

  172. awkward because on

  173. an unofficial poll

  174. on marriage retreat,

  175. 99.7% of men would

  176. like to do more

  177. workshops on kissing.

  178. So just so you know,

  179. it's a thing, right?

  180. That we're all kind

  181. of, uh, kind of

  182. into a little bit.

  183. So I plan on going

  184. home and lemme

  185. just say, guys, if

  186. you've not taken

  187. notes before in a

  188. message, this might

  189. be the one, right?

  190. This just might, this

  191. might be the one.

  192. So lemme clarify too.

  193. I don't wanna get

  194. this in way any

  195. weird, we're not gonna

  196. talk technique, uh,

  197. we're not gonna talk

  198. about like French

  199. kissing per se.

  200. Um, I may do one

  201. little touch on

  202. a Spanish kissing

  203. situation, but you'll

  204. understand and it'll

  205. make some sense.

  206. So, you guys ready?

  207. You buckled up.

  208. Can I just say, I've

  209. never had as many

  210. young people focused,

  211. locked in laser beam,

  212. ready to roll, right?

  213. And I finally

  214. have some husbands

  215. off their phones

  216. during church.

  217. This is great guys.

  218. This is great.

  219. I'm gonna make this

  220. a regular routine.

  221. Well, as we think

  222. about kissing,

  223. let's, uh.

  224. Let's get to the

  225. scripture, right?

  226. 'cause you don't

  227. need my opinion.

  228. Uh, if you're Jamie,

  229. you don't want my

  230. opinion, right?

  231. It's not a big deal.

  232. But let's see what

  233. the scriptures say

  234. about this kissing

  235. thing so we can

  236. learn a little bit.

  237. Here we go.

  238. One Corinthians

  239. chapter 16 verses

  240. 19 through 20.

  241. Paul is signing off to

  242. the church in Corinth.

  243. He's talked about

  244. some pretty heavy

  245. stuff, right?

  246. And engaged in some

  247. pretty serious,

  248. I mean, just read

  249. first Corinthians.

  250. You'll get a, a pretty

  251. good sense of the

  252. magnitude of stuff.

  253. And as he's signing

  254. off, he says, the

  255. church in the province

  256. of Asia sends you

  257. greetings, Aquila

  258. and Priscilla greet

  259. you warmly in the

  260. Lord, and so does

  261. the church that

  262. meets at their house.

  263. And if you pay

  264. attention to what

  265. this looks like.

  266. The early church was a

  267. relational experience.

  268. I tell people all the

  269. time that you couldn't

  270. be a disciple of Jesus

  271. Christ and not live in

  272. Christian community.

  273. It was so intertwined.

  274. That's part of

  275. the deal, right?

  276. Family and church

  277. ought to be synonyms,

  278. not something kind

  279. of funky and kind of

  280. out in left field.

  281. I had some fun talks

  282. this week with some

  283. different people.

  284. It happens like

  285. every week.

  286. People who come

  287. to White Rock are

  288. like, uh, what's

  289. wrong with you guys?

  290. And then we have

  291. really good talks

  292. about what's wrong

  293. with us, right?

  294. Like that.

  295. We have a value for

  296. being authentic, au

  297. authentic and genuine.

  298. . This fits so well.

  299. Uh, I have this

  300. conversation all

  301. the time about

  302. presentation

  303. and polish and

  304. choreography.

  305. Which do you remember?

  306. Bob Lane from

  307. Inquest Ministries?

  308. He came to a White

  309. Rock service years

  310. ago, and he watched

  311. as we broke guitar

  312. strings and told

  313. stories about the

  314. beach and wandered

  315. around, and he

  316. was marveling

  317. at it because.

  318. He coaches churches

  319. to bring a little

  320. more authenticity

  321. into their service.

  322. And it wasn't until

  323. the end of the service

  324. that he realized, oh,

  325. you guys literally

  326. just screwed stuff

  327. up and ad-libbed you

  328. were just being you.

  329. Okay, that wasn't

  330. choreographed, right?

  331. So I just wanna put

  332. to rest, those of

  333. you who thought I

  334. dumped a communion

  335. cup to try to set

  336. a mood, Nope, nope.

  337. That was legit

  338. dropage of communion.

  339. Go.

  340. And it's not the only

  341. thing you'll see that

  342. goes wrong at a church

  343. service, because

  344. for me, I wanna be

  345. the real church of

  346. Jesus Christ, really

  347. doing life together.

  348. Give you guys a

  349. microphone and let

  350. you share some truth,

  351. share some hurt,

  352. some pain, some joys

  353. without polishing

  354. rehearsal, because

  355. the church, the, the

  356. world doesn't need

  357. to see fancy looking

  358. Christians who look

  359. the part, they need

  360. to see real people

  361. trying to follow

  362. Jesus and walk it

  363. out in relationship

  364. that matters so much.

  365. And I love that

  366. about you guys.

  367. In fact, when I walked

  368. into my church, my

  369. church, in my office

  370. at the church, my

  371. first words, when I

  372. saw all those balloons

  373. in a mess, I actually

  374. said out loud.

  375. I love White Rock.

  376. It is so great, man.

  377. So great.

  378. And I knew it

  379. was Renee right

  380. off the bat.

  381. Like it wasn't even

  382. a question, right?

  383. Because people do

  384. stuff around here

  385. and get noticed.

  386. So Paul is helping

  387. us get a little

  388. snapshot here into

  389. the relational

  390. element of the church

  391. of Jesus Christ.

  392. These people are

  393. friends, they

  394. family, their

  395. connected, they're

  396. meeting at their

  397. houses, they're in

  398. relationship together.

  399. And then he says

  400. in verse 20, all

  401. the brothers and

  402. sisters here send

  403. you greetings.

  404. And then he drops this

  405. haymaker and he says,

  406. greet one another

  407. with a holy kiss.

  408. Now, I want you to

  409. know, as a pastor's

  410. kid, I knew my Bible

  411. and I don't know how

  412. many times I tried

  413. to get girls to do

  414. Bible studies with

  415. me on one Corinthians

  416. chapter 16, verse

  417. 20, you know, like

  418. we really need to

  419. dive into this and

  420. explore what is God

  421. saying to us in this?

  422. You know, not a lot

  423. of bites not gonna

  424. lie, but I promised

  425. you a Spanish story.

  426. Um, in 1992, I think

  427. it was, they had

  428. the dream team going

  429. to the Olympics

  430. in Barcelona.

  431. Is that what you

  432. were watching

  433. the other day?

  434. Yeah.

  435. So.

  436. I got to be at that,

  437. uh, in Barcelona at

  438. the Olympics and in

  439. the area there in

  440. the city doing some

  441. ministry when I was,

  442. just before my junior

  443. year in high school.

  444. And I got to go with

  445. World Gospel Mission

  446. and we got, you know,

  447. to go to all these

  448. little venues all

  449. around the city and

  450. put on basketball

  451. clinics, right?

  452. Like sophomore

  453. in high school,

  454. basketball guy.

  455. Uh, I was pretty

  456. impressive, but

  457. not enough that

  458. anybody should have

  459. come and watched.

  460. But at any rate,

  461. we did all these

  462. things for families

  463. and children and

  464. passed out gospel

  465. tracks and talked to

  466. 'em about the Lord.

  467. And it was a really

  468. neat experience.

  469. And in fact, one of

  470. our group watched

  471. Larry Bird's kids

  472. during the Dream

  473. team matchup.

  474. It was kind of

  475. crazy small world

  476. in Barcelona, but I

  477. really connected well

  478. with this missionary

  479. young lady, not over

  480. this verse, but who

  481. was there on site.

  482. And one evening,

  483. uh, she and I went

  484. to this kind of

  485. courtyard festival

  486. that was going on.

  487. She wanted to me

  488. to meet some of her

  489. friends and we went

  490. on this walk and, uh.

  491. We're, we're kind of

  492. walking around the

  493. edge of this crowd

  494. and different people

  495. are kind of, you know,

  496. bumping into each

  497. other and whatnot.

  498. And she brings me

  499. around this corner and

  500. right before my eyes

  501. is the prototypical

  502. high school European

  503. girl who needs to

  504. know about Jesus

  505. and we need to

  506. have a talk right

  507. about this verse.

  508. She walks up to

  509. her friend and she

  510. gives her a big hug.

  511. And I'm standing right

  512. there as a sophomore

  513. in high school.

  514. Like, I would really

  515. like to meet this

  516. girl and maybe be

  517. her friend for the

  518. rest of my life.

  519. I don't know, right?

  520. Like this is a

  521. big moment in

  522. this high school

  523. vibe in my world.

  524. And so I kind of

  525. like do the thing

  526. that awkwardly I

  527. do and just sort of

  528. like kind of lean

  529. down a little bit.

  530. 'cause she was kinda

  531. shorter and I was

  532. getting ready to

  533. stick out my hand.

  534. And as I did that,

  535. this little European

  536. gal starts to stand

  537. up on her tippy

  538. toes and leans

  539. right into my space.

  540. Right?

  541. And lemme just

  542. tell you guys.

  543. As a sophomore in

  544. high school, I had

  545. been afraid this

  546. was gonna happen.

  547. My charm would be too

  548. much for the European

  549. ladies and they were

  550. gonna come in and

  551. I'd be like pushing

  552. 'em away and like,

  553. how do I maintain

  554. purity over here in

  555. this foreign country?

  556. I mean, it was a, it

  557. was a moment, right?

  558. And it was a moment

  559. that probably lasted

  560. like half a second,

  561. but I think it was

  562. about 20, 30 years.

  563. I sat there in this

  564. moment watching

  565. this young lady who

  566. I'd never even seen

  567. before in my life,

  568. who obviously was

  569. having a really hard

  570. time maintaining

  571. her attraction, you

  572. know, and keeping her

  573. boundaries with me.

  574. And she gets closer

  575. and closer and

  576. closer and there was

  577. confusion, there was

  578. excitement, there was

  579. a lot of confusion.

  580. And then right before

  581. our noses touch,

  582. I probably started

  583. to close my eyes

  584. and puck her up.

  585. I dunno what

  586. I did right?

  587. And I was like, this

  588. is gonna be, wow.

  589. Don't tell mom

  590. about this.

  591. Um, so right at

  592. the last second.

  593. She dive bombs

  594. to this cheek and

  595. gives me a kiss and

  596. to this cheek and

  597. gives me a kiss and

  598. leans back and says

  599. something in Spanish

  600. to which I assume

  601. was, we're not gonna

  602. make it very much

  603. further young man.

  604. Right?

  605. , this isn't what

  606. you think this is.

  607. Um, I'm sure there

  608. was a serious amount

  609. of rejection and

  610. disappointment as

  611. the, as the blood

  612. drained from my

  613. face, realizing

  614. all of my hopes

  615. and dreams in this

  616. moment were really

  617. nothing more than a

  618. nice greeting from

  619. someone who thought I

  620. was important enough

  621. relationally to value

  622. because I was a friend

  623. of someone's friend.

  624. It was just a

  625. stupid greeting.

  626. And to this day, I

  627. hate this greeting

  628. 'cause it takes

  629. me back to my

  630. sophomore year of

  631. rejection, right?

  632. Uh, now not so much.

  633. But if you go to

  634. other culture, has

  635. anybody ever been

  636. kissed by somebody

  637. in another culture?

  638. Tim, do you wanna talk

  639. about it in front of

  640. your wife right now?

  641. Not, not right now.

  642. Another time.

  643. Another time.

  644. It'd be good, right?

  645. It is a weird deal.

  646. It's just a

  647. weird deal.

  648. And I, and I'm really

  649. glad we don't do that.

  650. Um.

  651. I'm glad Jamie's

  652. not out there

  653. kissing guys.

  654. Welcome 'em

  655. to White Rock.

  656. You know what I mean?

  657. That would just not

  658. feel right to me.

  659. In fact, in the 13th

  660. century, the church

  661. got away from this

  662. tradition, but this

  663. was a normal practice

  664. in the early church

  665. to greet one another

  666. with a holy kiss.

  667. Right?

  668. Still in the Eastern

  669. Orthodox Church

  670. during the Easter

  671. time, they have a,

  672. they have a really

  673. weird poem about

  674. the bearded faces

  675. kissing one another

  676. and you're just like,

  677. Ugh, what's going on?

  678. Right.

  679. It's just, just

  680. not maybe what we

  681. do, but this idea

  682. of the kiss of

  683. greeting is actually

  684. pretty significant.

  685. And I know it feels

  686. like a little bait

  687. and switch, right?

  688. Like, wait a second.

  689. We were gonna talk

  690. about how to make

  691. out with somebody.

  692. What is this

  693. all about?

  694. What's going well?

  695. Hang with me.

  696. I don't think

  697. we'll get there,

  698. but hang with me.

  699. Um, let me just

  700. take a quick little

  701. detour into this

  702. area of love.

  703. I shared this this

  704. week with my students

  705. a little bit at

  706. the school, but the

  707. word love is such a

  708. complicated thing, and

  709. in America we rock.

  710. All love as romantic

  711. stuff, right?

  712. But in the New

  713. Testament, the

  714. word that gets used

  715. is actually four

  716. different words to

  717. help paint the picture

  718. of what love is.

  719. Words like aeros,

  720. Ophelia, storge, and

  721. agape are all words

  722. used to describe love

  723. in the New Testament

  724. church and in the New

  725. Testament language,

  726. storge is this love

  727. of family, right?

  728. Brothers, sisters,

  729. moms, dads, cousins.

  730. Like there's a,

  731. there's a bond

  732. there of family.

  733. Eros is where we

  734. get the word erotic.

  735. It's a romantic

  736. kind of love, right?

  737. It's what Jamie feels

  738. towards me right now.

  739. Um, Felia is, uh, I'm

  740. be in trouble anyhow,

  741. guys, after today.

  742. So I might as well get

  743. my money's worth, you

  744. know what I'm saying?

  745. So Felia.

  746. You might know

  747. this from the

  748. city of Brotherly

  749. Love Philadelphia.

  750. Felia is friendship.

  751. Love a connection

  752. of friendship.

  753. No idea why

  754. Philadelphia is the

  755. reflection of that

  756. in America, but at

  757. any rate, and then

  758. Agape love is this

  759. unconditional love

  760. of God, this crazy

  761. awesome love that

  762. chases us to the

  763. very gates of hell.

  764. And we see in God's

  765. love a reflection

  766. of all these, right?

  767. Like storge, we're

  768. invited into family

  769. and relationship.

  770. Sons and daughters

  771. adopted into the

  772. family of God,

  773. joint heirs with

  774. Jesus, right?

  775. We see in this aeros,

  776. not so much romantic

  777. love, but covenant

  778. relationship, love

  779. that God has for us.

  780. The same.

  781. That should be between

  782. a husband and a wife.

  783. And we see

  784. Felia love, man.

  785. We're called

  786. friends of God

  787. in the scripture

  788. relationship.

  789. Joint airs with

  790. Jesus, but friends

  791. with Jesus, and

  792. then agape love.

  793. Kinda incorporates

  794. all of that in an

  795. unconditional way.

  796. So when Paul talks

  797. about this idea of

  798. the kiss, much to

  799. the disappointment

  800. of some of you, he

  801. does not mean to

  802. greet one another

  803. with an erotic kiss.

  804. He doesn't mean kiss

  805. your sister, though.

  806. That's not a

  807. bad approach to

  808. thinking of romantic

  809. relationships

  810. like we ought to

  811. honor other women.

  812. Like scripture says,

  813. treating them like

  814. sisters and brothers

  815. until we move into

  816. romantic relationship

  817. of covenant marriage,

  818. might affect how we

  819. treat people and see

  820. their worth and value.

  821. And he is not

  822. talking agape love.

  823. Lemme give you

  824. the Greek word.

  825. It's pronounced

  826. phileo.

  827. And I don't know how

  828. good your matching

  829. skills are from Sesame

  830. Street, but when

  831. you look up there,

  832. it looks a lot like

  833. Ophelia Love Ophelia.

  834. You know what

  835. I'm saying?

  836. So this idea of

  837. greeting one another

  838. with a holy kiss.

  839. It's about the

  840. bond of friendship,

  841. intimate connection,

  842. relationship.

  843. And it was a practice

  844. in the early church.

  845. And if you allow me,

  846. my brain does these

  847. kind of things, why?

  848. Right?

  849. Just why.

  850. What was the

  851. motivation?

  852. What was the reason?

  853. What's behind this?

  854. And I love to ask this

  855. question, why is this

  856. even in scripture?

  857. Right?

  858. And lemme tell you,

  859. it's not just here

  860. in Corinthians, it's

  861. in multiple places

  862. in the New Testament

  863. where they were to

  864. greet one another

  865. with a holy kiss,

  866. greet one another

  867. with a holy kiss.

  868. Well, why?

  869. Well, I wanna throw

  870. three things at

  871. you real quick this

  872. morning that I think

  873. we better not lose

  874. when we laugh off the

  875. idea of the holy kiss

  876. between brothers and

  877. sisters in Christ.

  878. So lemme explore

  879. these with you

  880. for just a moment.

  881. I think one of the key

  882. things that's really

  883. important about a

  884. kiss and specifically

  885. a greeting of a

  886. holy kiss between

  887. brothers and sisters

  888. in Christ is this

  889. picture right here,

  890. intimacy, intimacy.

  891. A kiss is a really

  892. intimate thing, right?

  893. It's part of why

  894. when whoever she was

  895. was getting really

  896. close, man, I was

  897. like, whoa, this

  898. is, this is awkward

  899. and uncomfortable

  900. and I don't think we

  901. should be doing this.

  902. And we don't know

  903. each other that well.

  904. Right?

  905. Like it's intimate

  906. to be kissed by

  907. somebody or to kiss

  908. somebody, right?

  909. And it has these

  910. couple of, uh,

  911. concepts to it.

  912. The idea of connection

  913. in intimacy and the

  914. idea of closeness.

  915. And as followers of

  916. Jesus Christ, we are

  917. connected in store.

  918. Gay love as family

  919. literally, and also

  920. in feel your love

  921. as friendship and

  922. comradery, right?

  923. There is a bond

  924. for those of us

  925. who are in Christ

  926. and in this family.

  927. We're in this

  928. thing together.

  929. There should be a

  930. measure of intimacy

  931. with the people that

  932. you do church with.

  933. If you don't, if

  934. everybody you know

  935. is a stranger, you're

  936. missing a huge piece

  937. of what the church

  938. is supposed to be.

  939. We're supposed to

  940. be connected to each

  941. other, invested in

  942. each other, caring

  943. about each other.

  944. Right.

  945. And the idea of

  946. closeness has this

  947. element of, of

  948. even affection.

  949. Like I know sometimes

  950. it's hard, right?

  951. But we're supposed

  952. to kinda like each

  953. other and work at

  954. liking each other so

  955. that maybe we could

  956. even love each other.

  957. Right?

  958. And listen, not

  959. everybody gets

  960. my sense of humor

  961. or appreciates

  962. hanging out with me.

  963. I can totally

  964. get that.

  965. No, no offense taken.

  966. But that doesn't

  967. diminish the closeness

  968. and the connection

  969. that we have through

  970. Jesus Christ.

  971. We're in this

  972. thing together.

  973. On our retreat time,

  974. we had couples sharing

  975. some of their story in

  976. our worship service.

  977. We let people share

  978. with one another.

  979. We had an incredible

  980. time on our men's

  981. group last, last

  982. week just sharing

  983. and talking together.

  984. There's a bond

  985. and a closeness

  986. and a connection

  987. that we share in

  988. our relationship

  989. in Jesus Christ.

  990. That's reflected in

  991. how the church was

  992. to greet one another,

  993. almost like a visual

  994. reminder that we are

  995. intimately connected.

  996. I lean in and I

  997. give you a kiss of

  998. greeting because

  999. we're connected and

  1000. because you matter

1001. to me and we're in

  1002. this thing together.

  1003. We don't look from a

  1004. distance and wave or

  1005. just try to ignore

  1006. each other, but

  1007. we engage and this

  1008. kiss of intimacy,

  1009. not erotic love,

  1010. but friendship

  1011. and family love is

  1012. really important

  1013. to think about.

  1014. This other word

  1015. I wanna throw at

  1016. you is this word

  1017. vulnerability.

  1018. Now those of you,

  1019. lemme say this

  1020. real quick about

  1021. kissing real fast.

1022. Um, big fan, big fan.

1023. Uh, but the more you

  1024. save kissing for a

  1025. covenant relationship,

  1026. the better you're

  1027. experiencing kissing

  1028. and the better your

  1029. life is gonna be.

  1030. I talk to people

1031. all the time who are

  1032. like, well, I probably

1033. need to have sex with

1034. somebody so I know if

1035. I'm any good at it.

1036. So when I get married,

  1037. no, you don't.

  1038. You'll figure it out.

  1039. Kind of the same

  1040. deal with kissing

  1041. too, right?

  1042. Like, what if

  1043. I'm a bad kisser?

  1044. If somebody loves you,

  1045. they're gonna figure

1046. out how to s slob it

  1047. all over your face.

  1048. Fine.

  1049. It doesn't

  1050. matter, right?

  1051. You're not gonna

  1052. need to perfect

  1053. the technique.

  1054. You're gonna be fine.

  1055. Kissing is an

  1056. expression of

  1057. vulnerability

  1058. and intimacy and

  1059. connection, right?

  1060. We diminish those

1061. things and we make 'em

  1062. like, just do whatever

1063. you want, but we kind

  1064. of diminish something

  1065. special about it.

  1066. A kiss is kind

  1067. of risky, right?

  1068. It's kind of risky.

  1069. You're putting

  1070. yourself out there.

  1071. I mean.

  1072. I don't know what it's

  1073. like to be rejected,

  1074. but I can imagine

  1075. other people, right?

  1076. , right?

  1077. We've probably mostly

  1078. been there, right?

  1079. Like yesterday when I

  1080. was like, Hey, Jamie,

  1081. and she's like, get

  1082. away from me, right?

  1083. We, it still goes

  1084. on in marriage, just

  1085. trust me, right?

  1086. Like, there is

  1087. rejection that we

  1088. experience because of

  1089. vulnerability, right?

  1090. But you can't

  1091. connect in a deep,

  1092. intimate way without

  1093. being vulnerable.

  1094. There's a risk to it.

  1095. And in relationship

  1096. with Jesus Christ,

  1097. and together at his,

  1098. his church and his

  1099. body, you know, when

  1100. you make yourself

  1101. vulnerable, sometimes

  1102. it's a little risky.

  1103. It is.

  1104. But there's no

  1105. reward without

  1106. the risk, right?

  1107. There's no deeper

  1108. level of intimacy

  1109. without the risk.

  1110. And, you know, uh,

  1111. it's maybe a little

  1112. unsafe, right?

  1113. You put yourself

  1114. out there and, and

  1115. you're unguarded,

  1116. you're vulnerable.

  1117. That's the picture of

  1118. what vulnerability is.

  1119. You're not safe.

  1120. You're, you're

  1121. at risk.

  1122. This.

  1123. Definition is awesome.

  1124. It says, exposed

  1125. to the possibility

  1126. of being easily

  1127. hurt or attacked.

  1128. And that's where

  1129. we live a lot

  1130. of times, right?

  1131. As guarded people,

  1132. we don't wanna put

  1133. ourselves out there

  1134. because now we're

  1135. exposed to the

  1136. possibility that

  1137. somebody might hurt

  1138. us or that somebody

  1139. might do something.

1140. And listen, , we talk

  1141. about at our couples

  1142. street law, you can't

  1143. move to deeper levels

  1144. of intimacy until

  1145. you work through

  1146. conflict with people.

  1147. We do this all

  1148. the time, right?

  1149. We butt heads in

  1150. conflict, and then

  1151. we turn and walk

  1152. away on each other.

  1153. That's stupid, right?

  1154. We go like, well,

  1155. somebody hurt

  1156. my feelings.

  1157. Somebody said

  1158. something.

  1159. And so I'm breaking

  1160. and severing

  1161. relationship.

  1162. But the key thing

  1163. that we need to

  1164. do is work through

  1165. those conflicts with

  1166. communication and

  1167. some appropriate

  1168. ways of remembering

1169. how to submit to one

  1170. another in love and

  1171. talk through things.

  1172. Because when we do

1173. that, we get to deeper

  1174. levels of intimacy

1175. so that the next time

  1176. there's a conflict,

  1177. we don't just bail.

  1178. We know, Hey, we've

1179. been here before I, we

  1180. got each other's back.

  1181. We're for each other.

  1182. We're gonna find a

  1183. way through this.

  1184. So many marriages

  1185. hit conflict and

  1186. quit on each other.

  1187. So many relationships

  1188. within the church just

  1189. quit on each other

  1190. is, is garbage man.

  1191. There's depth and

  1192. there's joy when

  1193. you work through

  1194. conflict and you don't

  1195. quit on each other,

  1196. but you can't get

  1197. there unless you're

  1198. willing to be exposed

  1199. and be vulnerable.

  1200. It's one of my

  1201. greatest values

  1202. about our church

  1203. is just being

  1204. genuine and real.

  1205. Can you get

  1206. hurt by that?

  1207. Yes, of course.

  1208. And listen, if

  1209. somebody in here has

  1210. hurt your feelings

  1211. or said something,

1212. man, we need to work

  1213. towards communication

  1214. and reconciliation

  1215. there because

  1216. that's just what the

  1217. devil wants, man.

  1218. He plants seeds a

  1219. division, and he

  1220. tries to stir stuff

1221. up and he tries to

  1222. get us seeing things

  1223. and looking at things

  1224. and feeling things

  1225. from angles that

  1226. he can manipulate.

1227. And man, when we just

  1228. walk in the truth

  1229. and we're genuine

  1230. and honest and open

  1231. and transparent

  1232. with one another

  1233. and vulnerable, it

  1234. doesn't, I mean, when

  1235. somebody comes to

  1236. you in vulnerability,

  1237. that's oftentimes met.

  1238. Whew.

  1239. Embraced vulnerability

  1240. from your

  1241. perspective, right?

  1242. There's something

  1243. beautiful when two

  1244. vulnerable people

  1245. come together.

  1246. Quite honestly, if

  1247. you wanna go back

  1248. to the kissing idea,

  1249. it's part of the

  1250. magic of a kiss.

  1251. When two people put

  1252. everything at risk

  1253. and they lean out

  1254. into that space and

  1255. they're met with

  1256. somebody else, putting

  1257. everything at risk

  1258. and meeting out in

  1259. that space, there's

  1260. some magic there.

  1261. And don't miss

  1262. the significance

  1263. of a relationship

  1264. in the church

  1265. of Jesus Christ.

  1266. We don't wanna

  1267. get hurt, we don't

  1268. wanna feel pain, but

  1269. man, if we don't,

  1270. we miss so much.

  1271. And lemme just

  1272. remind you of

  1273. this simple little

  1274. truth right here.

  1275. Jesus didn't call us

1276. to a life of safety.

1277. He told us to put

  1278. ourselves at risk.

1279. And in this life we're

  1280. gonna have trouble.

  1281. But he's overcome

  1282. the world.

  1283. Go to the highways,

  1284. the byways, go into

  1285. all the world and

  1286. make disciples.

  1287. That is not a

  1288. call to safety

  1289. and guarding and

  1290. protection and looking

  1291. out for my own.

  1292. We're supposed

  1293. to be exposed and

  1294. vulnerable and open

  1295. and willing to engage

  1296. with a world that's

  1297. a mess and hurting.

  1298. And we just wanna

  1299. protect and rally on

  1300. our little fortress

  1301. and not engage.

1302. And I think we miss

  1303. something powerful

  1304. when we're willing

  1305. to be vulnerable with

  1306. the people around

  1307. us, especially in

  1308. our church family.

  1309. And let that build.

  1310. And you bring more

  1311. and more people into

  1312. that space, and more

  1313. and more people learn

1314. what it looks like to

  1315. walk in vulnerability

  1316. together.

  1317. It's a beautiful

  1318. picture of what the

  1319. early church walked

  1320. and experienced.

  1321. And then just this

  1322. last one I wanna

  1323. throw at you is

  1324. this word, humility.

  1325. Humility.

  1326. You can get

  1327. some serious

  1328. rejection, right?

  1329. If you humble

  1330. yourself, you can.

  1331. They don't like

  1332. me, they don't

  1333. wanna be around me.

  1334. Uh, I got rebuffed.

  1335. Sure, sure.

  1336. But you can't

  1337. experience intimacy

  1338. without a measure

  1339. of humility.

  1340. I like this image

  1341. here of lowering

  1342. myself, right?

  1343. And I was thinking

  1344. about greetings and

  1345. how in other places

  1346. in the world, people

  1347. do different stuff.

1348. And over in Asia, you

  1349. know, it's kind of

  1350. customary, uh, to kind

1351. of maybe do a bow,

  1352. which some historians

  1353. would tell us that

  1354. there's something

  1355. there visually about

  1356. lowering myself

  1357. to acknowledge

  1358. the presence of

  1359. someone else.

  1360. There's humility

  1361. in that engaged

  1362. connection

  1363. of greeting.

  1364. And, you know, , I was

  1365. thinking about this

  1366. with our young guys.

  1367. You know,

  1368. what do we do?

  1369. We're like just

  1370. out a, a, a, right?

  1371. We're trying to

  1372. get taller than

  1373. the other person.

  1374. We're trying to

  1375. look bigger than

  1376. the other person

  1377. instead of bringing

  1378. ourselves low.

  1379. To acknowledge the

  1380. value in the other

  1381. person around us.

  1382. And there's an element

  1383. of humility that comes

  1384. with the greeting

  1385. of a holy kiss.

  1386. We humble ourselves

  1387. to greet one another

  1388. as a reminder

  1389. to be intimate.

  1390. To be vulnerable,

  1391. but also to think

  1392. of others more

  1393. highly of our than

  1394. ourselves, right?

  1395. To submit to one

  1396. another out of love

  1397. and to treat other

  1398. people with the

  1399. same value that we

  1400. treat everyone so

  1401. that there's equal

  1402. footing and equal

  1403. love and acceptance

  1404. for everyone.

  1405. Greet one another

  1406. with a holy kiss.

  1407. I was thinking about

  1408. this because in

  1409. the 13th century,

  1410. like I said, this

  1411. kind of died out.

1412. It got maybe a little

  1413. abused and manipulated

  1414. or whatever.

  1415. And I just wanna

  1416. say this, I don't

  1417. want to reinstate

  1418. this practice.

  1419. I don't think it's

  1420. something, um, there's

1421. a lot of facial hair

1422. in here and I'm just

  1423. not looking forward to

  1424. a good kiss on Rusty's

  1425. lips or what not.

  1426. Lips, maybe cheek.

  1427. Okay.

  1428. Sorry.

  1429. Just making sure.

  1430. Just making sure.

  1431. Um.

  1432. But I was wondering

  1433. about this.

  1434. Has the hug replaced

  1435. the holy kiss?

  1436. And I was thinking

  1437. about it from

  1438. this context.

  1439. Church hug a lot.

  1440. Maybe you're like,

  1441. don't touch me,

  1442. and maybe that's

  1443. worth exploring.

  1444. Why don't touch me.

  1445. But you know, when

  1446. you think about

  1447. this question,

  1448. who do you hug?

  1449. Who do you hug?

  1450. You hug your family.

  1451. Probably maybe some

  1452. of you reluctantly.

  1453. All right,

  1454. grandma, right?

  1455. Whatever.

  1456. Uh, you might hug

  1457. your friends, right?

  1458. We'll fill your love.

1459. Um, do you hug a

  1460. total stranger?

  1461. Some of you have

  1462. issues and you do.

  1463. You're like,

  1464. Hey, gimme a hug.

  1465. It's so great to

  1466. have coffee in

  1467. this line with you.

  1468. Super great, right?

  1469. Um, and maybe

  1470. that's cool.

  1471. Maybe that's cool.

1472. But the truth is we

  1473. don't get intimate

  1474. with total strangers,

  1475. and that's not what

  1476. Paul's calling us

  1477. to do here, right?

  1478. He's not saying,

  1479. you know, you

  1480. should go out there

  1481. and be intimate.

  1482. Everybody, right?

  1483. This idea of intimacy

  1484. and vulnerability

  1485. and humility,

  1486. it's for those who

  1487. are followers of

  1488. Jesus Christ in

  1489. relationship together

  1490. and walking out what

1491. it looks like to be

  1492. the family of God.

  1493. And maybe I'll

  1494. stick that in there.

  1495. I don't think

  1496. that's biblical,

  1497. per se, but maybe

  1498. the vulnerability

  1499. of hugging somebody

  1500. is a thing, right?

  1501. Hugging somebody for

1502. some of us is kind of,

  1503. well, it's a little

1504. bit in my bubble and

  1505. in my space that's

  1506. intimate, right?

  1507. It's vulnerable

  1508. and awkward, right?

  1509. You might put yourself

  1510. out there and get

  1511. like the weird half

  1512. corner hug with the

  1513. chest, you know, thump

  1514. from the shoulder

  1515. blade from the other

1516. guy or gal, and it's

  1517. just like that was

  1518. the worst hug in

  1519. the world, right?

  1520. It kind of

  1521. happens, right?

  1522. And there's a humility

  1523. of like, I don't wanna

  1524. touch everybody, but

  1525. all right, all right.

  1526. Right.

  1527. I'll give you a hug.

  1528. I'm not saying

  1529. we need to

  1530. reinstitute the hug.

1531. I'm not saying that we

  1532. should reinstitute the

  1533. holy kiss, but what

1534. I am saying is the

  1535. way that early church

  1536. greeted one another.

1537. Was a reminder of the

  1538. status they shared

  1539. together as family

  1540. and as friends.

1541. And if we get away

1542. from that and we just

  1543. become spectators

  1544. at church or become

  1545. concert attendees,

  1546. we miss the heartbeat

1547. of what the church is

  1548. supposed to be about.

  1549. At its core, it's

  1550. relationship.

  1551. It's a relationship

  1552. with God.

  1553. It's a relationship

  1554. with each other.

  1555. God himself is

  1556. relational, right?

  1557. God the Father, God

  1558. the Son, God the

  1559. Holy Spirit, he's in

  1560. triune relationship.

1561. We want to come to

  1562. church, sterilize

  1563. the experience, and

1564. I get the whole covid

  1565. fist bump thing and

  1566. the elbow stuff, and

  1567. the cheesy things.

  1568. We tried to figure

  1569. out how to touch

  1570. but not touch.

  1571. But I would challenge

1572. you to find a way

  1573. to engage and to

  1574. greet members of this

  1575. eternal family that

1576. you hang out with in a

  1577. way that reminds them

  1578. and reminds you that

  1579. you are intimately

  1580. connected and

  1581. there is closeness.

  1582. You're willing

  1583. to not be guarded

  1584. against them, right?

  1585. And that you don't

  1586. think of yourself to

  1587. be above superior to

  1588. them, but that they

  1589. have equal value

  1590. and they matter.

  1591. And they have

  1592. equal worth.

  1593. That's the picture

1594. of what it means to

  1595. greet one another

  1596. with a holy kiss.

  1597. And Josh, if you

  1598. decide to turn this

  1599. into a Bible study

  1600. tonight with the

  1601. guys and the gals,

  1602. I understand man.

  1603. Explore the whole

  1604. kissing thing.

  1605. Get where you need

  1606. to get to with

  1607. the youth group.

  1608. But alright,

  1609. let's pray.

  1610. Lord Jesus, thank

1611. you so much for some

  1612. of the practical

  1613. truth from your word.

  1614. Uh, sometimes,

  1615. Lord, we blow right

  1616. through this little

  1617. statement that's

  1618. littered throughout

  1619. all the letters

  1620. to the churches in

  1621. the New Testament,

  1622. most of them.

  1623. And instead, we

  1624. just do our thing

  1625. based on a cultural

  1626. experience of church.

  1627. God, I pray you'd

  1628. help us to engage

  1629. in love intimately.

  1630. Vulnerable and humble

  1631. in our approach to

  1632. one another that we

  1633. might experience all

  1634. the beauty and joy

  1635. and encouragement

  1636. that exists for

1637. those of us who are

  1638. part of your family.

  1639. Thank you for your

  1640. word and your truth.

  1641. In Jesus' name.

  1642. Amen.

  1643. Hey, speaking of

  1644. connection, I was

  1645. gonna bring my

  1646. beautiful wife up

1647. here to help me do

  1648. these announcements

  1649. real quick because,

1650. uh, I might be in

1651. the dog house and if

  1652. she's like, you know

  1653. what, I wanna practice

  1654. this kissing thing,

  1655. I will definitely

  1656. be open to that.

  1657. And so, anyways, yeah.

  1658. Alright.

1659. As we wrap up this

  1660. morning, just a

  1661. quick, uh, heads

1662. up on a couple key

  1663. things and we'll

  1664. get you outta here.

  1665. Yes.

  1666. Not gonna tell

  1667. you what I'm gonna

  1668. preach about next

  1669. week, but all right.

  1670. So

  1671. awkward.

  1672. It won't be

  1673. the first time.

  1674. It won't be

  1675. the first time.

  1676. That's true.

  1677. Hey, tell us what's

  1678. going on tonight.

  1679. Jam.

  1680. All right.

  1681. Youth group and

  1682. young adult college

  1683. kids at our house,

  1684. but youth group here

1685. from six to seven 30.

  1686. Super cool.

  1687. And then on Tuesday,

  1688. financial peace,

  1689. financial piece.

  1690. Six 30, Saturday,

  1691. 9:00 AM rock.

  1692. And rolling.

  1693. Tim, people could

  1694. still get in right

1695. if they want to take

1696. a shot at this one.

  1697. So please catch

1698. Tim in the back if

  1699. you're interested.

  1700. We have some cool

  1701. free stuff for you

  1702. to get and it's

  1703. pretty awesome.

  1704. Yeah, uh, some

  1705. subscription stuff

  1706. that the church is

  1707. covering for anybody

1708. who wants to be in it.

  1709. So if you have

  1710. any interest,

  1711. please catch Tim.

  1712. Super big deal.

  1713. What's going on

  1714. on Wednesday?

  1715. Women's group Girls.

  1716. We were canceled out

  1717. two weeks ago from

  1718. the weather, so this

  1719. weather looks amazing.

1720. And did you want me to

  1721. throw in Monday night

  1722. is the hike, Tara

  1723. will be sending that.

  1724. Did you want me

  1725. to throw that in?

  1726. Yes.

  1727. Yes.

  1728. Monday night.

1729. Um, we are doing a

  1730. hike for February.

  1731. Tara will send out

  1732. the details at pot.

  1733. 5 30, 30

  1734. Potter's Bridge.

  1735. So guys, it'd be a

  1736. really bad time to

  1737. be like, Hey, why

  1738. don't you take a

  1739. hike tonight, woman.

1740. Not a way to say it.

  1741. Right.

  1742. Would you like

1743. to go on a hike?

  1744. Definitely.

  1745. Now leading to

  1746. kissing more.

  1747. Oh, good point.

  1748. Good point.

  1749. Small groups

  1750. are underway.

  1751. Dax is up here

  1752. in the front.

  1753. You can catch

  1754. him if you have

  1755. any questions.

  1756. Um, some of your

  1757. parents have been

  1758. clamoring with

  1759. excitement about this.

  1760. Yay.

  1761. See Tom and Shannon.

  1762. It's very exciting.

  1763. Very exciting.

  1764. I, yes.

  1765. I don't have

  1766. littles anymore to

  1767. be like, woo-hoo.

  1768. Oh, we can't take

  1769. our teenagers over

1770. there and drop 'em off

  1771. with Tom and Shannon.

  1772. My bad.

  1773. I misunderstood

  1774. this whole slide.

  1775. Just kidding.

  1776. Hey, parents,

  1777. night out.

  1778. Make sure you

  1779. get signed up.

  1780. I think there's a

  1781. signed up next door.

  1782. Don't miss it first

  1783. come, first serve.

  1784. I'm just kidding.

  1785. I think it's

  1786. a big opening.

1787. So, lots of fun stuff.

  1788. And as Verla pointed

  1789. out, we're still

  1790. collecting soups this

1791. week or this, well, I

  1792. guess this week, uh,

1793. as we wrap up February

1794. to find ways that we

  1795. can love and encourage

  1796. people with some food

1797. and, uh, super cool at

  1798. the Wix building, what

  1799. they're doing there.

  1800. That's just, that's

  1801. just super neat.

  1802. White Rock.

  1803. Love you so much.

  1804. So good to

  1805. be together.

  1806. Why don't you, uh,

  1807. greet one another

  1808. with a holy hug

  1809. and have an awesome

  1810. week in the Lord?

  1811. Love you guys.
