  1. Alright, thanks guys.

  2. No, uh, cheesy

  3. sermon, intro, music

  4. today, last week I

  5. got in way too much

  6. trouble with that

  7. kissing sermon and

  8. things got awkward.

  9. I know.

  10. But, uh, good to

  11. see the anticipation

  12. and excitement on

  13. your faces today.

  14. Yeah, what's

  15. coming next?

  16. Well, some good

  17. stuff from God's

  18. word, I hope.

  19. Uh, hey, a little

  20. clarification too.

  21. Um, Josh talked to me

  22. about this afterwards.

  23. Our headset mic

  24. broke a couple weeks

  25. ago and we've been

  26. fighting it, and then

  27. we got another one

  28. supposed to be here,

  29. but then it's coming.

  30. Maybe next week

  31. we'll find out.

  32. But evidently, I'm a

  33. guy who talks with my

  34. hands a lot and I had

  35. my stuff like this.

  36. I don't know, but

  37. Josh pointed out

  38. that I was flipping

  39. off the congregation

  40. a lot last week.

  41. So I just want to

  42. go on the record

  43. as saying that

  44. was definitely

  45. unintentional and

  46. if any of you guys

  47. have big feelings

  48. about that, please

  49. know I love you.

  50. And it wasn't a

  51. subliminal message.

  52. Um, now if you were

  53. on your phone and

  54. you looked up and

  55. felt guilty, like

  56. I was sending you

  57. a message, maybe I

  58. could live with that.

  59. I don't know.

  60. But not really.

  61. Not really.

  62. Oh man.

  63. Good stuff.

  64. So we were talking

  65. a little bit about

  66. some stuff kind of

  67. nestled in Corinthians

  68. and . As I've been

  69. praying about this

  70. week and looking at

  71. some different things,

  72. God has brought this

  73. to my attention a

  74. couple weeks ago and

  75. I've been chewing on

  76. wrestling with it.

  77. And, uh, man, I'm

  78. just kinda excited

  79. to share this really

  80. cool passage outta

  81. First Corinthians

  82. today and unpack it

  83. together a little bit.

  84. And I hope you find

  85. it encouraging.

  86. I think there's a call

  87. to followers of Jesus.

  88. Um, and, and you know

  89. what's interesting?

  90. We all have different

  91. personalities, right?

  92. Sometimes we read a

  93. passage of scripture

  94. and it's like just

  95. this quiet, bubbly

  96. brook, and there's

  97. like a little

  98. hummingbird and a

  99. flower, and you're

  100. like, Jesus, this

  101. is my passage.

  102. Ah, right?

  103. And then others of

  104. us are like, go punch

  105. the devil in the face.

  106. And we're like,

  107. yes, my passage.

  108. All right, we're good.

  109. Right?

  110. So this passage

  111. this morning has a

  112. little bit of a, a,

  113. a guy bent to it.

  114. But I gotta be honest

  115. with you, I'm a

  116. little, I'm a little

  117. bent towards calling

  118. guys to walk and lead

  119. as men in the church

  120. of Jesus Christ in

  121. their homes and in

  122. the world because.

  123. God has a little

  124. bent towards calling

  125. men to lead in the

  126. church of Jesus Christ

  127. and in their homes

  128. and in the world.

  129. And so this morning,

  130. I wanna share

  131. something that Paul

  132. says to the church in

  133. Corinth that I think

  134. is really powerful.

  135. And he didn't just

  136. say it to the church

  137. in Corinth, he said

  138. it to the church

  139. all over Rome.

  140. And he said it so

  141. that we one day

  142. would listen and hear

  143. it, and it applies

  144. whether you're a

  145. man or a woman.

  146. But we're gonna dive

  147. into some really

  148. cool stuff that God

  149. calls us to here

  150. this morning, and I

  151. hope you find some

  152. encouragement in this.

  153. It's not a

  154. complicated passage.

  155. It makes a lot

  156. of sense when you

  157. read it and at

  158. face value, you'll

  159. probably be like,

  160. I think I get it.

  161. It makes sense.

  162. First Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 16:13

  163. chapter 16, verse 13.

  164. A lot of different

  165. translations.

  166. I'm pulling this

  167. outta the ESV says

  168. this, be watchful.

  169. Stand firm

  170. in the faith.

  171. Act like men.

  172. Be strong.

  173. Be watchful.

  174. Stand firm

  175. in the faith.

  176. Act like men

  177. and be strong.

  178. Now listen, I'm,

  179. I don't consider

  180. myself a professional

  181. preacher, but I

  182. would say that if you

  183. were a preacher and

  184. you read these four

  185. phrases, you could

  186. probably put together

  187. what we might call in

  188. the business a four

  189. point sermon, right?

  190. Pretty clear

  191. , even an idiot.

  192. Anyways, moving on.

  193. So be watchful,

  194. stand firm.

  195. We're gonna

  196. unpack this just

  197. a little bit.

  198. So let me talk to

  199. you a little bit

  200. about this idea

  201. of being watchful,

  202. because I've been

  203. thinking about this

  204. in some conversations

  205. I've had recently

  206. with some people.

  207. And what this picture

  208. really is here for

  209. the church in Corinth,

  210. this is kind of almost

  211. a military angle that

  212. Paul's working here.

  213. He's talking to

  214. people who understand

  215. Roman occupation.

  216. He, they understand

  217. military engagement

  218. and how things are,

  219. you know, approached

  220. from kind of a

  221. military mindset.

  222. Had several

  223. conversations this

  224. week, including this

  225. morning, talking

  226. with a guy about the

  227. fact that we are in

  228. a spiritual battle.

  229. That there is a war

  230. that rages right

  231. up here between our

  232. ears, that the enemy's

  233. constantly throwing

  234. lies and deception,

  235. and we're called

  236. to take captive.

  237. Every thought, right?

  238. Every imagination,

  239. every lofty idea

  240. that sets itself up

  241. against the knowledge

  242. of God we're to

  243. demolish strongholds

  244. and arguments

  245. that the enemy

  246. would throw at us.

  247. And sometimes we just

  248. don't live in this

  249. reality that we're in

  250. a spiritual battle.

  251. We think things look

  252. safe, things look

  253. comfortable, and our

  254. struggle is sort of

  255. doing a little better

  256. as a human being.

  257. And that's not

  258. the case, man.

  259. We are in a spiritual

  260. war against the

  261. forces of evil and

  262. darkness that exist.

  263. And sometimes I

  264. think other places

  265. where it looks a

  266. little more raw and

  267. a little bit more

  268. in your face, people

  269. are a little bit

  270. more well watchful.

  271. And where we

  272. live, we get kinda

  273. lulled to sleep.

  274. But man, make, make

  275. no mistake, Satan

  276. is not taking a

  277. break from America.

  278. He's not taking

  279. a break from

  280. Hamilton County.

  281. He's at work

  282. here trying to

  283. do some serious

  284. destruction, and we

  285. have to be people

  286. who pay attention.

  287. And in the military,

  288. we would say it

  289. like this, and

  290. some translations

  291. use this phrase,

  292. be on your guard.

  293. And if you were a

  294. soldier who was on

  295. guard, you would be

  296. doing this One very

  297. simple principle,

  298. you would be paying

  299. attention, right?

  300. We don't see this a

  301. lot in the military,

  302. in our country.

  303. I don't know, maybe it

  304. happens more than we

  305. realize, but in Rome,

  306. if you fell asleep

  307. while you were on

  308. guard and you weren't

  309. paying attention,

  310. you were executed.

  311. I haven't seen that

  312. a lot in the US

  313. military, but the

  314. reality is, is the

  315. people who were

  316. responsible to be

  317. watchful and on

  318. guard were paying

  319. attention because

  320. while their own life

  321. mattered, right?

  322. But really the

  323. motivation behind

  324. paying attention

  325. and being on guard

  326. wasn't just to protect

  327. yourself, it was to

  328. protect everybody

  329. else around you.

  330. One of the things Paul

  331. calls the church to

  332. do is to pay attention

  333. and be watchful to

  334. what's going on around

  335. you, what's happening,

  336. so that you can be

  337. a protection for

  338. other people so that

  339. you're helping other

  340. people not get into

  341. a position where the

  342. enemy has access and

  343. destruction going on

  344. in, in their life.

  345. And I was thinking

  346. about this for us

  347. as, uh, we look at

  348. this, make America

  349. healthy again and all

  350. the different things

  351. happening culturally,

  352. there's a lot, you

  353. know, going on.

  354. And I was thinking

  355. about just this

  356. phrase, paying

  357. attention to what you

  358. consume, you know,

  359. as, as Americans

  360. were consumers.

  361. And I don't know

  362. if you're like me,

  363. I don't always pay

  364. a lot of attention

  365. to what I consume.

  366. I'm a pretty good

  367. consumer of pizza.

  368. I don't read a lot of

  369. the pizza ingredients.

  370. Um, you might be

  371. somebody who's like

  372. one of those box

  373. readers, right, who

  374. slow down the progress

  375. and the cereal aisle.

  376. 'cause you wanna

  377. see exactly what

  378. ingredients are in it.

  379. Good for you.

  380. Great job.

  381. You might be like

  382. my wife who, uh,

  383. Hey Ganda, here's

  384. the situation.

  385. Jamie's helping

  386. next door today.

  387. So GA's in the

  388. sweet spot.

  389. So if you guys get

  390. Ganda to roll the

  391. eyes and do the,

  392. what are you talking

  393. about knucklehead,

  394. that'll keep me

  395. on task, right?

  396. So as much as that,

  397. much as that works,

  398. we don't pay a lot

  399. of attention to what

  400. we consume sometimes

  401. and maybe we're

  402. starting to to to

  403. pay attention more.

  404. I don't know, maybe

  405. you get a little

  406. older, you realize

  407. what's at stake

  408. and you begin to

  409. pay a little more

  410. attention, right?

  411. I was actually

  412. thinking there's

  413. probably a whole

  414. sermon in just this

  415. simple idea of paying

  416. attention to what

  417. you consume because

  418. consuming is just

  419. really what you maybe

  420. put in your, and I

  421. would just do these

  422. right here, man, head,

  423. heart, and hands.

  424. And I wanna

  425. challenge you to

  426. think about this for

  427. just two seconds.

  428. This isn't the

  429. four point sermon.

  430. This is a tiny

  431. little three point

  432. sermon mixed into

  433. the four point sermon

  434. for bonus points.

  435. No worries.

  436. But.

  437. What you put into

  438. your head, what you

  439. put into your heart

  440. and what you put into

  441. your hands, you're

  442. consuming that stuff.

  443. Had some interesting

  444. conversations this

  445. week with people about

  446. the music they're

  447. listening to and the

  448. stuff that they're

  449. just not even really

  450. paying attention to.

  451. Man, my dad used

  452. to make me, man, I

  453. remember driving in

  454. the car to school and

  455. we would, you know,

  456. 'cause dad wasn't in

  457. there, we'd flip it

  458. over to the current

  459. hip hop station

  460. or pop, whatever's

  461. going on, right.

  462. And we'd catch the

  463. cool new song that

  464. everybody liked and

  465. then inevitably dad

  466. would get in the

  467. car and it's still

  468. on the radio and we

  469. forgot to change it.

  470. And then he is like,

  471. what you listening to?

  472. And we were like,

  473. I don't know what

  474. Christy was listening

  475. to, but I, I, I'm

  476. going to find out Dad.

  477. I'm disappointed

  478. in her.

  479. But my dad had this

  480. thing about music

  481. and he said this, if

  482. you can sit down with

  483. me and explain to me

  484. why the lyrics that

  485. you're listening to

  486. are good for you and

  487. they point you to the

  488. principles that Jesus

  489. wants us to follow,

  490. I'm great with that.

  491. I was like, well

  492. dad, it sounds

  493. really cool, right?

  494. I did this with some

  495. teens a few years ago.

  496. They love

  497. screamo music.

  498. And I was like, Hey,

  499. that's not music.

  500. You're just.

  501. I mean, you can

  502. get in trouble

  503. with your parents.

  504. They'll scream at

  505. you every, why don't

  506. you enjoy that?

  507. Right?

  508. But so we, we

  509. listened to this song.

  510. I mean, I painfully

  511. listened to the

  512. whole song, and

  513. they're like,

  514. isn't that awesome?

  515. And I was like, no,

  516. it's horrible, but

  517. I see why you would

  518. think it's awesome.

  519. I guess, what

  520. are they saying?

  521. And the guys said,

  522. well, I mean, I, I

  523. think it's like a

  524. good, I think it's

  525. kind of like a good

  526. message about, you

  527. know, whatever.

  528. Right?

  529. So we printed off the

  530. lyrics and I had them

  531. just read the lyrics

  532. to me out loud and

  533. you know, verse, you

  534. know, sentence three.

  535. They were like, I

  536. don't think I should

  537. read this to a Pastor

  538. I was like, I don't

  539. think you should read

  540. this to yourself, bro.

  541. Right?

  542. So we did the

  543. only thing we

  544. knew how to do.

  545. I tried to help

  546. these young men and

  547. I said, here's what

  548. we're gonna do, man.

  549. We pulled off a

  550. version of the

  551. song that was just

  552. instrumental, which

  553. Screamo instrumental

  554. is tricky, right?

  555. So we got the

  556. instrumental track,

  557. we laid it down, and

  558. then we went online

  559. and I was like, you

  560. want some screaming?

  561. You want some

  562. screaming?

  563. Let's do this.

  564. We went to YouTube

  565. and we found seven

  566. videos of these

  567. African-American

  568. women preachers who

  569. were 70 year olds.

  570. Older screaming at

  571. the congregation,

  572. we overlaid it

  573. to their music.

  574. And then I played

  575. that for them.

  576. I was like, now

  577. you got some

  578. Jesus screamo.

  579. What do you think?

  580. Right.

  581. Yeah.

  582. Yeah.

  583. They weren't

  584. impressed either.

  585. I thought it

  586. was brilliant.

  587. Um, but they

  588. didn't listen to

  589. a lot of screamo

  590. around me anymore.

  591. So, but here's the

  592. thing, what you listen

  593. to, man, garbage in,

  594. garbage out, right?

  595. The stuff that goes

  596. into your head,

  597. you're absorbing it.

  598. The principles, the

  599. messaging, you're just

  600. soaking it in and it

  601. does not return void.

  602. It does not just sort

  603. of bouncing your ear

  604. and back out like,

  605. well, like the tune.

  606. I like the stuff.

  607. Listen, we gotta

  608. pay attention to the

  609. messaging that we're

  610. consuming and getting

  611. into our heads and

  612. into our hearts,

  613. and we carry around

  614. these phones all

  615. day long, endlessly.

  616. And we're

  617. consuming content

  618. just constantly.

  619. And most of the

  620. time we're not

  621. discerning, we're

  622. not filtering, we're

  623. not paying attention.

  624. We're just . Soaking

  625. it all in, man.

  626. And our hearts, our

  627. spirits are like a

  628. sponge sometimes.

  629. And we're just

  630. soaking in the

  631. world's messaging and

  632. what's going on in

  633. the world around us.

  634. And then you watch it,

  635. man, the stuff that

  636. you've listened to

  637. starts to accidentally

  638. slip outta your mouth

  639. in a conversation

  640. and in a moment.

  641. And I'm not saying

  642. you can't listen to

  643. some music that's

  644. not all about Jesus,

  645. but maybe there's

  646. something to this idea

  647. of being watchful of

  648. what we are consuming

  649. and putting in.

  650. We need to be watching

  651. for the enemy.

  652. Where's he?

  653. Where he is at

  654. work for sure.

  655. We need to be standing

  656. our guard, right?

  657. But some of that

  658. being on guard is not

  659. opening the side door

  660. for the enemy and

  661. inviting him to sit

  662. in with us while we

  663. watch the front gate

  664. to see if he's coming.

  665. Right?

  666. And that sounds like

  667. old man fuddy duddy.

  668. And I'm super

  669. sorry, right?

  670. There's some really

  671. great Christian

  672. music out there.

  673. There's some really

  674. great secular

  675. music out there.

  676. There's kind of fun.

  677. But.

  678. Man, you gotta be

  679. discerning and you

  680. gotta pay attention.

  681. And if you can't

  682. defend what you're

  683. putting in and if you

  684. can't stand before

  685. Jesus and say, Lord,

  686. this is cool for me to

  687. absorb this, I would

  688. challenge you that,

  689. uh, maybe you're being

  690. a little disobedient

  691. to what he calls us

  692. to as his people.

  693. And if you can,

  694. that's great.

  695. It doesn't mean

  696. I'm gonna like,

  697. it still probably

  698. sounds terrible,

  699. but so also in this

  700. idea of watchful

  701. is this word watch.

  702. And I just wrapped

  703. up basketball season

  704. with uh, Jed, which

  705. is a ton of fun.

  706. And uh, man, I kind

  707. of miss coaching.

  708. And then after a

  709. while, I don't miss

  710. coaching at all,

  711. but love basketball.

  712. And I was thinking

  713. about this idea

  714. of watchful

  715. with basketball.

  716. And one of the things

  717. we always talk about

  718. in coaching and in

  719. games, and if you've

  720. ever sat in the stands

  721. and you've watched

  722. high school or junior

  723. high basketball,

  724. there's a phrase

  725. about watching that's

  726. really important.

  727. And it's this

  728. very simple

  729. phrase, eyes up.

  730. Right.

  731. Holy cow.

  732. The blood pressure

  733. of watching a dude

  734. streak wide open

  735. to the basket while

  736. somebody's dribbling

  737. and staring at

  738. their shoe laces is

  739. maddening, right?

  740. The opportunities

  741. that get missed on

  742. a basketball court,

  743. because we don't

  744. have our eyes up.

  745. The danger that we

  746. don't avoid on a

  747. basketball court

  748. because we don't have

  749. our eyes up, man, I

  750. learned more about

  751. following Jesus on a

  752. basketball court than

  753. I did in a Sunday

  754. school classroom.

  755. That's probably

  756. not totally true,

  757. but I feel like it

  758. applied and made

  759. more sense to me.

  760. Preacher be like,

  761. well, pay attention.

  762. Fix your eyes

  763. on Jesus.

  764. I'm like, I

  765. don't know man.

  766. Look for the open man.

  767. Stay away from

  768. the defender.

  769. The defender's,

  770. the devil.

  771. The open man

  772. is your fellow

  773. follower, Jesus.

  774. Oh, ding, that

  775. makes sense.

  776. I get it right.

  777. Like some of the

  778. metaphors and the

  779. pictures that are

  780. super clear on

  781. the basketball

  782. court, translate

  783. to the scriptures.

  784. You gotta have your

  785. eyes up where you miss

  786. everything and you put

  787. yourself in positions

  788. where you're gonna

  789. go and walk right

  790. into double teams in

  791. trouble and messes.

  792. We have to learn to

  793. do that spiritually.

  794. It's no different.

  795. God calls us to

  796. keep our eyes up

  797. and be watchful.

  798. I have a son who's

  799. getting ready to do

  800. the whole driving

  801. thing, which I don't

  802. wanna talk about that

  803. right now, but, um,

  804. a lot of increased

  805. prayer lifetime.

  806. Right?

  807. But I remember the

  808. first time, one of

  809. the first times I

  810. was driving with my

  811. dad, man, and we were

  812. just rocking between

  813. those lines back and

  814. forth, back and forth

  815. until my dad was

  816. gonna throw up on me.

  817. And he is like, dude,

  818. where are you looking?

  819. And I was like, I'm

  820. staring over the hood

  821. to make sure I keep it

  822. in the, in the lines.

  823. He is like, lift

  824. your eyes up man.

  825. Look at the horizon.

  826. 'cause now things

  827. are gonna not only

  828. smooth out, but you

  829. can see obstacles

  830. coming and dangerous

  831. things coming.

  832. And I was like, ah,

  833. now for him, that was

  834. probably self-serving

  835. 'cause he didn't wanna

  836. throw up anymore.

  837. But also it taught me

  838. a ton about getting

  839. my eyes up in driving.

  840. Be watchful.

  841. Pay attention

  842. as followers of

  843. Jesus Christ.

  844. Eyes up.

  845. Watch what we're

  846. putting in our

  847. heads, our heart,

  848. our hands in matters.

  849. Stand firm

  850. in the faith.

  851. Stand firm

  852. in the faith.

  853. If you don't think

  854. standing firm is

  855. a really important

  856. thing to Paul, you've

  857. never read Ephesians

  858. where he says, stand,

  859. and now that you've

  860. done everything

  861. to stand, I say,

  862. stand, stand firm.

  863. Then with a belt

  864. of truth, he says,

  865. stand like my mom was

  866. like, Andrew, Andrew.

  867. Andrew, Andrew,

  868. Andrew, and he's

  869. like, stand, stand,

  870. stand, stand, stand.

  871. Right.

  872. He wants us to

  873. be people who

  874. stand firm, right?

  875. Biblically, this

  876. picture is to hold

  877. your ground in a

  878. military sense.

  879. It makes sense.

  880. It also makes sense

  881. in a basketball

  882. sense, right?

  883. I dunno if you've

  884. ever seen anybody play

  885. basketball who doesn't

  886. know how to box out

  887. and hold their ground

  888. on the defense, trying

  889. to get a rebound on

  890. the offense, trying

  891. to get a rebound.

  892. It gets shoved

  893. everywhere, right?

  894. Offensive position.

  895. You gotta hold your

  896. ground in basketball.

  897. It makes a

  898. lot of sense.

  899. If we throw back

  900. the idea of the car,

  901. oh wait, this is

  902. a motorcycle, Jed,

  903. this is all you'll

  904. ever get, buddy.

  905. A tiny moped, so don't

  906. even think about it.

  907. Right?

  908. I had a buddy who

  909. used to teach, um,

  910. motorcycle classes

  911. and I finally got this

  912. question answered.

  913. 'cause I gotta be

  914. honest, if you don't,

  915. if you don't ride,

  916. you don't understand.

  917. But motorcycles

  918. are always like

  919. way out there in

  920. that first lane off

  921. the yellow, right?

  922. They're always

  923. like right there.

  924. And I'm always

  925. riding behind 'em.

  926. I'm like, dude, you

  927. got like so much space

  928. you could just kind

  929. of hang out in this

  930. sweet spot over here.

  931. No Rusty, right?

  932. Why not?

  933. I was looking for a

  934. short answer, but yes.

  935. Thank you.

  936. So mostly, mostly

  937. protection, right?

  938. And safety.

  939. You gotta stay in a

  940. higher visibility spot

  941. and out of the crud

  942. and the junk, right?

  943. For sure.

  944. It's kinda like the

  945. eyes up thing, right?

  946. You hold your position

  947. in the lane, you

  948. hold your ground,

  949. and if you don't do

  950. that as a motorcycle

  951. rider, man, you're

  952. gonna get knocked all

  953. over the place and

  954. potentially wipe out.

  955. God's principles for

  956. us are pretty simple.

  957. When we look at the

  958. world around us,

  959. people understand

  960. what it means to

  961. hold firm and hold

  962. your ground in

  963. basketball, in driving

  964. and spiritually,

  965. man, we've got

  966. to hold ground.

  967. Scripture says, let

  968. us only let us live

  969. up to what we've

  970. already attained

  971. this picture of.

  972. Do not go backwards,

  973. but hold firm

  974. to what's been

  975. established.

  976. And we do that

  977. through the power

  978. of the Holy Spirit.

  979. We do that through

  980. the armor of God

  981. and all kinds of

  982. different connections

  983. to his resource

  984. and his strength.

  985. But we are called

  986. to be people who do

  987. not go backwards.

  988. We may not always

  989. be able to, to press

  990. forward and strive

  991. forward, but we

  992. don't go backwards.

  993. We hold the ground.

  994. We stand firm

  995. in the faith.

  996. I think as a young

  997. man, this resonated

  998. with me growing up

  999. out west more than

  1000. anything else in this

  1001. idea of standing firm.

  1002. The Cheyenne

  1003. dog Soldier.

  1004. It's a painting,

  1005. but the Cheyenne

  1006. dog soldier was the

  1007. most fierce Indian

  1008. warrior on the planes.

1009. And they, I mean, they

1010. had all kinds of, you

  1011. know, intimidation

  1012. tactics and whatnot.

  1013. But one of the

  1014. things they did

  1015. that was amazing,

  1016. they had a sash.

  1017. They, they, uh, had

  1018. attached to them

  1019. called a dog rope.

  1020. And in battle, they

  1021. would stake the

  1022. dog rope to the

  1023. ground and they

  1024. would not retreat.

  1025. They would hold

  1026. their ground and

  1027. they would fight

1028. or die, win or die,

  1029. right there attached

  1030. to that stake.

  1031. There was no place

  1032. for them to retreat,

  1033. no place for them

  1034. to go backwards.

  1035. They stood their

  1036. ground, they held

  1037. their ground.

1038. And as a cool picture,

1039. as a guy, it resonates

  1040. with me a ton as a

  1041. man who doesn't quit,

  1042. who doesn't give up,

  1043. who doesn't rip out

1044. the stake and turn and

  1045. run when it's hard.

1046. God calls us to be

  1047. people who stand firm.

  1048. Who hold our ground

  1049. and constantly the

  1050. devil challenges

  1051. us to, to give

  1052. ground, to let go.

  1053. Does it really matter?

  1054. Cast doubt, fear,

  1055. worries, anxieties

  1056. endlessly.

1057. But God calls us to

1058. be people who hold our

  1059. ground and stand firm.

1060. And I love that this

  1061. phrase is followed

  1062. up with this one

  1063. act like men.

  1064. Now ladies, I just

  1065. wanna say this does

  1066. not mean you're exempt

  1067. from the call here.

  1068. It's why some

  1069. translations have

  1070. changed this to be

  1071. be courageous or be

  1072. brave, which is not

  1073. a bad idea, except

1074. that and Dr. May in

  1075. the Greek, this phrase

  1076. literally means to

1077. act like a man and

1078. man, we live in this

  1079. culture where manhood

  1080. is sort of kicked

  1081. to the curb where

  1082. masculinity is toxic.

  1083. Where.

  1084. God designed men,

  1085. and he called men

  1086. to bravery and

  1087. not cowardice.

  1088. He called men to

  1089. stand and to fight

  1090. and to be courageous.

  1091. That does not

  1092. mean an absence

  1093. of fear, right?

  1094. Sometimes there's

  1095. fear, there's worry,

  1096. there's anxiety, but

  1097. it means no retreat

  1098. and no giving up,

  1099. and no throwing our

  1100. hands up and saying

  1101. it's somebody else's

  1102. responsibility.

  1103. Guys, God has called

1104. men to lead in their

  1105. families spiritually.

  1106. It disgusts me to

  1107. see how much the

  1108. American church has

  1109. become the women

  1110. being the spiritual

  1111. nurturers and the guys

  1112. being the providers.

  1113. That is biblical

  1114. bull crap.

  1115. I think that's

  1116. the official term.

  1117. Sorry, but it's

  1118. just a lie.

  1119. It's not even

  1120. true at all.

  1121. God calls men to

  1122. teach their children

  1123. about the Lord when

  1124. they get up, when

  1125. they go to sleep,

  1126. when they're walking,

  1127. when they're making

  1128. dinner, when they're

  1129. mowing the lawn.

  1130. Modern translation.

  1131. But the reality

1132. is, is all day long

  1133. we're supposed to

  1134. see the opportunities

  1135. and seize the

  1136. opportunities to

  1137. lead our children

  1138. in discipleship,

  1139. following Jesus,

  1140. being apprentices of

  1141. the King of Kings.

  1142. Man, that's a

  1143. call to manhood.

  1144. That's not

  1145. biblically a woman's

  1146. responsibility.

  1147. It's not.

  1148. She needs to nurture

  1149. and care and come

  1150. under the direction

  1151. of her husband in

  1152. the, in those areas.

  1153. Sure.

  1154. But man, guys, we

  1155. answer to the Lord

1156. for what we do with

1157. the call to lead and

  1158. disciple our families.

  1159. That's straight

  1160. scripture.

1161. And we live in a

  1162. culture where men

  1163. and women are equal.

  1164. They can do the

  1165. same things, I mean.

  1166. It's just so dumb.

  1167. I mean, women are

  1168. better than men.

  1169. That's obvious.

  1170. But we don't do

  1171. the same things

  1172. and we're not built

  1173. the same, and we

  1174. don't even bring

  1175. the same things to

  1176. the equation, right?

  1177. God desperately

  1178. wants a mom and a

  1179. dad to influence the

1180. kid in a way that

  1181. gives a full rounded

  1182. picture of God's

  1183. glory and goodness

  1184. and his love, right?

  1185. Both, both aspects.

  1186. Maybe you protect

  1187. and maybe you push

  1188. a little bit, right?

  1189. Like whatever that

  1190. looks like in the

  1191. tensions between

  1192. the two of you.

  1193. But God designed

  1194. family so that we

  1195. would experience

  1196. God's love and

  1197. manhood is under

  1198. attack culturally.

  1199. And listen, if you

  1200. think toxic manhood

  1201. is like chauvinistic

  1202. dictatorship,

  1203. you have no idea

  1204. what manhood is.

  1205. Manhood and marriage

  1206. and leadership

  1207. and headship in

  1208. marriage is saying,

1209. I love you so much.

  1210. I'm gonna follow

  1211. Jesus' example, and

  1212. I'm gonna die to

  1213. myself to serve you.

  1214. If you think

  1215. that's like toxic,

  1216. uh, ladies, I'd

  1217. challenge you to

1218. get in one of those

  1219. relationships and see

  1220. how it really works.

  1221. It's kind of a

  1222. cool deal, right?

  1223. And a wife who

  1224. honors her husband

  1225. and submits to her

  1226. husband and respect,

  1227. it's a beautiful

  1228. picture based on God's

  1229. design for what men

  1230. are supposed to be.

  1231. But listen, guys,

  1232. we've, we've just sent

1233. in and caved into this

  1234. idea of being brave

  1235. and courageous and

1236. to stand and to lead.

  1237. And that is

  1238. so contrary

  1239. to God's word.

  1240. Your kids need

  1241. to see it.

  1242. Your wife needs

  1243. to see it.

  1244. Your fiances

  1245. need to see it.

  1246. Your girlfriends

  1247. need to see it.

  1248. Girls who think

  1249. they might wanna

  1250. be your girlfriends

  1251. need to see it.

  1252. Everybody needs

  1253. to see it.

1254. Be a man who leads,

  1255. act like men.

1256. And I love that phrase

  1257. in the scripture.

  1258. It's understood

  1259. what men do.

  1260. They're brave,

  1261. they're courageous,

  1262. and they lead.

  1263. And we've come along

  1264. and tried to dumb

1265. it down with a few

  1266. adjectives, man.

  1267. Right here in

  1268. the scriptures.

  1269. Hmm.

  1270. Watch be on guard.

  1271. Pay attention.

  1272. Stand firm and

  1273. lead like a man.

  1274. Live like a man.

  1275. Impact your

  1276. families and the

  1277. world around you.

  1278. Like a man.

  1279. That's the call

  1280. of God to men.

  1281. And he ends with

  1282. this phrase.

  1283. Be strong in this

  1284. passage right here.

  1285. Be strong.

  1286. This word literally

  1287. is tied to this

  1288. idea of mighty.

  1289. And I want, I

  1290. hope you can find

  1291. some encouragement

  1292. in this idea.

  1293. Check this out.

  1294. The word mighty.

  1295. Here's kinda a working

  1296. definition of mighty.

  1297. Does anybody remember

  1298. Mighty Mouse?

  1299. Yes.

  1300. Yeah.

  1301. Right, right.

  1302. Well, there's

  1303. a reason.

  1304. Mighty Mouse

  1305. was a thing.

  1306. Check out what this

  1307. definition means.

  1308. Mighty possessing

  1309. great and

  1310. impressive power

  1311. or strength, right?

  1312. We get that mighty

  1313. possessing great

  1314. and impressive

  1315. power or strength,

  1316. but it's not the

  1317. complete definition.

  1318. Especially on

  1319. account of size.

  1320. The implication

  1321. here is that might

  1322. surprises you because

1323. it comes in a smaller

  1324. package than you might

  1325. expect, and I find

  1326. great encouragement

  1327. in this promise that

1328. God calls us to be

  1329. strong because the

1330. truth is in our own

  1331. strength, man, we

  1332. don't have a lot going

  1333. on sometimes and in

  1334. our own strength,

  1335. we might look pretty

  1336. small to the world

  1337. around us, but we're

  1338. not operating in

  1339. our own strength.

  1340. Right?

  1341. Be strong, Ephesians

  1342. says in the Lord

  1343. and in the power

  1344. of his might.

  1345. Paul speaks to this

  1346. idea of when I'm

  1347. weak, I'm actually.

  1348. Crazy strong.

  1349. Why?

  1350. Because it's no

  1351. longer about my

  1352. strength and my

  1353. ability and my pride

1354. and what I can do.

  1355. It's about full

  1356. surrender to the

1357. power of God at work

  1358. in me, letting him

  1359. bring the strength,

  1360. bring the resource,

  1361. move the mountains.

  1362. And all I'm doing

1363. is just trying to be

  1364. obedient and keep in

  1365. step with what he's

  1366. calling me to do.

  1367. Being brave,

  1368. being courageous,

  1369. stepping, trusting,

  1370. and watching his

1371. power show up in me.

  1372. I'm called to be

  1373. strong, but it's not

  1374. about being strong

  1375. in Andy weight.

  1376. It's about being

  1377. strong in his

  1378. power, in his might.

1379. And guys all the time

1380. try to get strong, to

  1381. try to impress, try

1382. to get strong, to try

  1383. to accomplish, try to

  1384. maneuver and position

  1385. instead of first and

  1386. foremost, and always

  1387. plugging directly into

  1388. the Lord and saying,

  1389. father, it's your

  1390. strength, not mine.

1391. What do you want me

1392. to do and how do you

1393. want me to, to walk

  1394. and step and lift?

  1395. Because what I'm gonna

1396. do is I'm gonna take

  1397. a step and maybe I

  1398. don't possess much.

  1399. 'cause I'm, I'm small

  1400. in stature and to

  1401. the world's eyes and

  1402. to this circumstance

  1403. and situation.

1404. I'm kind of small, but

  1405. I'm mighty because of

  1406. the real power that

  1407. I have access to.

  1408. And that's gonna

  1409. show up in this

  1410. circumstance, in

  1411. this situation.

  1412. That's an awesome

  1413. picture of what it

  1414. means to be strong.

1415. And I love that we

  1416. have this bookend

  1417. of be and be.

  1418. These are not

  1419. situational.

  1420. These are

  1421. ongoing action,

  1422. a state of being.

  1423. Well, when do we

  1424. stop being watchful?

  1425. I mean, we're supposed

  1426. to just like be

  1427. watchful for a second.

  1428. Are we just supposed

  1429. to watch Now?

  1430. It doesn't say

  1431. watch, right?

  1432. It doesn't say watch.

  1433. It says be watchful.

  1434. Ongoing action.

  1435. We don't step out

  1436. and pretend like

  1437. there's no battle.

  1438. We don't decide it's

  1439. no longer of interest

1440. to us or worth the

  1441. fight to fight for

  1442. our families and for

  1443. our marriages, and for

  1444. the people around us.

  1445. We don't withdraw.

  1446. We don't walk away.

  1447. We stay staked, right

  1448. where we're positioned

  1449. and where God's

  1450. planted us to fight.

1451. And we stay in an

  1452. active, ongoing state

  1453. of being strong,

  1454. of being watchful,

  1455. right, of standing

  1456. firm and acting

  1457. courageous even if

  1458. inside we're quaking.

  1459. And let me encourage

  1460. you with this little

  1461. motivation that Paul

  1462. tags in on verse

1463. 14, he kind of wraps

  1464. this thought up

  1465. with this phrase,

  1466. let all that you

1467. do be done in love,

  1468. if your motivation

1469. to be strong is to

  1470. intimidate others

  1471. or to accomplish

  1472. your own success or.

  1473. Your own ambitions.

  1474. If your motivation

1475. to stand firm or be

  1476. courageous is to look

  1477. in the mirror and

  1478. feel hyped and good

  1479. about who you are.

  1480. All of your motivation

  1481. is messed up.

  1482. Love is what

  1483. drives this action.

1484. So one of the reasons

  1485. America's been a,

  1486. a feared fighting

  1487. force since World

1488. War I and World War

1489. ii, and in those eras

  1490. of Americans getting

  1491. involved, they fought

  1492. for each other and

  1493. they fought for the

  1494. love of country.

  1495. And in that space,

  1496. man, there's a

  1497. reservoir and there's

  1498. a resource to keep

  1499. people standing

  1500. and fighting and

  1501. not quitting.

  1502. I mean, mercenaries

  1503. get hired, right?

1504. And when it gets bad

  1505. enough, they bail.

  1506. But when you're

  1507. fighting for your

  1508. families and you're

  1509. fighting for your

  1510. friends and the

  1511. people that you love,

  1512. when do you quit?

1513. When do you give up?

1514. When do you walk out?

1515. When do you untake and

1516. walk away and say, I

  1517. don't care anymore.

  1518. Right?

  1519. Love is what

  1520. drives our action.

1521. Love is the only way

  1522. to be courageous when

1523. all you want to do

1524. is quit and give up.

  1525. Love is the only

  1526. way to stand when

  1527. you just wanna

  1528. lay down and cry.

1529. But the love of God

  1530. is more powerful than

  1531. any circumstance and

  1532. any situation we face,

1533. and we have access to

  1534. that for every single

  1535. thing in our life.

  1536. And when we get

  1537. connected to that

  1538. man, there is nothing

  1539. that the enemy can

  1540. do to overrun us.

  1541. Nothing.

  1542. Lord, thank you

  1543. for your word,

  1544. for your truth.

  1545. Thank you for your

1546. call to be people who

  1547. are paying attention,

  1548. who have their eyes

  1549. up, and who are

  1550. watching, who are

  1551. paying attention to

  1552. what they consume,

  1553. and paying attention

  1554. to what the enemy's

  1555. doing around them

  1556. for themselves.

  1557. Also for their family,

  1558. for their friends,

  1559. for their community.

  1560. God forgive us for

  1561. how often we look

1562. to our own ways and

  1563. our own devices.

1564. And just doing our own

  1565. selfish stuff helps

1566. us to be on guard.

  1567. And Lord, you know,

  1568. the ground that we've

  1569. taken from the enemy

1570. in our life, you know,

  1571. the progress maybe

  1572. we've made in some

  1573. areas, or you know,

  1574. some of the struggles.

  1575. God, I pray you'd

  1576. give us the, the

  1577. determination to drive

1578. a stake in the ground

1579. and not give up any

  1580. more ground to the

  1581. enemy, but to stand

1582. and fight and to see

  1583. your deliverance,

1584. and to see you come

  1585. alongside us and move

  1586. that stake a little

  1587. deeper into enemy

  1588. territory as we take

  1589. new and fresh ground.

  1590. Lord, you know, we

1591. live in a culture that

  1592. tells us acting like

1593. a man is toxic and

  1594. stupid and prideful.

  1595. And I suppose if we're

  1596. doing it for selfish

  1597. ambition and tyranny.

  1598. Then maybe it is.

  1599. But God, acting

  1600. like a man means

  1601. something about

  1602. courage and bravery

  1603. and determination

  1604. and strength.

1605. And God, I pray for

1606. the men in our church

  1607. that they would find

  1608. a fresh sense of

  1609. determination to be

  1610. the men they need

1611. to be, to lead in

  1612. their own life, in

  1613. the lives of their

  1614. families, and in the

  1615. life of our church.

  1616. And Lord, that

  1617. those ripple effects

  1618. would go far beyond.

  1619. And thank you, Lord,

  1620. that in our weakness

  1621. though we are small,

  1622. in stature, we

  1623. are mighty because

  1624. of your strength.

1625. And Lord, I pray that

  1626. love would really be

  1627. the motivation when

1628. we want to give up

1629. and we want to quit

  1630. and we just decide.

  1631. It's just too hard

  1632. that we would look

1633. at the faces of the

  1634. people that we love.

  1635. The people around us

1636. who are lost that you

  1637. love, and that there

  1638. would be a renewed

  1639. sense of determination

  1640. through love, to

  1641. continue to fight, to

  1642. continue to press on.

  1643. Lord, we love you

  1644. and we're so thankful

  1645. that you loved

  1646. us and that you

  1647. fought for us.

1648. And Lord, help us to

1649. use that as a little

  1650. bit of a reminder

  1651. to engage well

  1652. where you've got us.

  1653. Thank you Lord.

  1654. In Jesus name.

  1655. Amen.

  1656. Amen.

  1657. Whew.

  1658. Some heavy stuff man.

  1659. Hey uh, Caleb.

  1660. What's up man?

  1661. You on spring break?

  1662. No.

  1663. Are you on

  1664. spring break?

  1665. You don't get

  1666. spring break.

1667. Caleb, come on up here

  1668. Josiah, come on up

  1669. here Mr. Spring break.

  1670. 'cause uh.

  1671. Speaking of watching,

1672. I want you to watch

  1673. what's coming up and

  1674. these guys thought

  1675. they were on break

  1676. and they could just

  1677. chill out, but I'm

1678. gonna put 'em to work

  1679. this morning telling

  1680. you about what's

  1681. coming up at White

1682. Rock as we wrap up

  1683. the morning service.

1684. So you guys got, uh,

  1685. these mics right here

  1686. and if you guys

  1687. don't wanna do it,

  1688. I'm gonna be like,

  1689. just be courageous.

  1690. Act like men.

  1691. Two mics.

  1692. Alright, go ahead

  1693. Caleb, since

  1694. you got the mic.

  1695. What's happening

  1696. tonight buddy?

  1697. Youth group?

  1698. Uh, six 6:00

  1699. PM Hang on.

  1700. You better do

  1701. that again.

  1702. Austin didn't

  1703. want you to talk.

  1704. He wanted to be

  1705. courageous back there.

  1706. Youth group 6:00

  1707. PM All right,

  1708. you hear me?

  1709. Uh, college age

  1710. group as wait, wait,

  1711. wait, wait, wait.

  1712. See that guy

  1713. right there?

  1714. He's courageous and

  1715. he's gonna come for

1716. you and you have to

  1717. stand your ground.

  1718. If you don't sell

  1719. that youth group.

  1720. Slide a little harder.

  1721. Caleb.

  1722. Let's go.

  1723. Youth group at

  1724. 6:00 PM Woo.

  1725. All right.

  1726. There you go.

  1727. There you go.

1729. group at 6:00 PM Woo.

  1730. Yeah.

  1731. And then first

  1732. beater, small groups.

  1733. There's some

  1734. small groups

  1735. going on as well.

  1736. Yeah.

  1737. Yes.

  1738. Nice.

  1739. Tuesday at

  1740. six 30 there's

  1741. financial peace.

  1745. Very nice parents.

  1746. Night out.

  1747. Date night.

  1748. Okay.

  1749. That was

  1750. authentic ladies.

  1751. Yeah.

  1752. Yeah.

  1753. Um, Saturday,

  1754. March 8th.

  1755. Just I think

  1756. everybody's at Tom

  1757. and Shannon's, right?

  1758. I don't know.

1759. I have no idea, man.

1760. My kids kind of take

  1761. care of themselves,

  1762. so I don't know what's

  1763. going on, but, okay.

  1764. You still sign up

  1765. next door, right?

  1766. And then dropping

  1767. kids off here.

  1768. Does that sound

  1769. right to anybody?

  1770. Yeah.

  1771. Oh, it's next door.

  1772. It's next door.

  1773. Is the drop off.

  1774. And, and the

  1775. sign up is next

  1776. door too, right?

  1777. People can sign up?

  1778. Yes.

  1779. Perfect.

  1780. All right.

  1781. What they said, what's

  1783. men, uh, men's group

  1785. and third Wednesday

1786. at 7:00 PM Yeah, so

  1789. Totally legit.

1796. I feel like this needs

  1797. a little explanation.

  1798. We're just gonna

  1799. shut the lights

  1800. off for a couple

  1801. hours and the teens

  1802. emerge after that.

  1803. The rocks.

  1804. Rocks in the dark.

  1805. That's dangerous.

  1806. Hey, uh, ladies,

  1846. Things are going

  1847. nuts on the calendar

  1848. so we don't have

  1849. time for it all

  1850. this morning 'cause

  1851. these guys are on
