  1. On classic tradition,

  2. I thought about

  3. having introduction

  4. music, bumper music,

  5. as Andy always has

  6. and I sometimes have

  7. before the sermon.

  8. But given the subject

  9. matter, I thought this

  10. is a more important

  11. awkwardness to keep.

  12. It is always easy and

  13. more fun to do a, a

  14. fun, feel good sermon.

  15. And honestly, I.

  16. My life has been

  17. really great and

  18. I don't have much

  19. to complain about.

  20. Um, it's been hard

  21. and it's been a

  22. grind, but I was just

  23. driving to church

  24. this morning just

  25. thinking how happy I

  26. was of how joyful a

  27. life I have in God.

  28. But not everyone's

  29. life is that way,

  30. and my life hasn't

  31. always been that way

  32. and probably won't

  33. always be that way.

  34. I'm gonna have times

  35. of struggles and

  36. I've been thinking

  37. about a lot of people

  38. I know in my life.

  39. That are in really

  40. difficult moments.

  41. We're in

  42. difficult seasons,

  43. difficult years,

  44. and that spoken word

  45. that, um, Susie so

  46. graciously did and

  47. so wonderfully did.

  48. Um, I wrote that with

  49. different times of

  50. my life and different

  51. moments I've been in.

  52. Uh, and, and I just

  53. wrote that because

  54. I was thinking.

  55. How life's not

  56. always easy.

  57. And I can think of

  58. when I had the thought

  59. of if I just pray

  60. harder or if I just

  61. try harder, this pain,

  62. this thing will go

  63. away and I'm just not

  64. being faithful enough.

  65. And that's why life's

  66. hard right now.

  67. That's, that is a

  68. dangerous thought

  69. and especially

  70. dangerous advice to

  71. give to somebody.

  72. 'cause I know some

  73. really faithful,

  74. God-fearing good

  75. Christians who are

  76. dying of cancer.

  77. And that's just a

  78. reality of this broken

  79. world that we're

  80. promised in scripture.

  81. So I want this sermon

  82. to be encouraging,

  83. but I don't want to

  84. discount that life

  85. is hard and sometimes

  86. you're in a place

  87. of life where God

  88. just seems silent.

  89. You pray, God,

  90. I need you.

  91. Where are you?

  92. And then you feel

  93. like a bad Christian

  94. 'cause you feel

  95. like you're doubting

  96. God because you're

  97. asking him where he

  98. is and why you're not

  99. seeing signs of him.

  100. I had a conversation

  101. several weeks ago,

  102. um, with a, a girl

  103. who used to be in

  104. my youth group and

  105. talking about having

  106. doubts with God and

  107. really struggling in

  108. her faith, and she

  109. was like, I'm, I'm not

  110. a Christian because

  111. I'm, I'm having these

  112. doubts about God

  113. and I reassured her.

  114. Having a doubt,

  115. struggling does

  116. not mean you're

  117. not a Christian.

  118. I want to reassure

  119. you of that.

  120. And when you look

  121. in scripture, and

  122. especially in Psalms,

  123. you'll find things

  124. that affirm that the

  125. Psalmist, whether

  126. it's David or asap,

  127. um, or, or several

  128. others, you'll

  129. find that there are

  130. Psalms where they're

  131. saying, God, where

  132. are you right now?

  133. My enemies are coming

  134. down on me and I don't

  135. know where you are.

  136. So we're gonna

  137. open up to that.

  138. Um, let's go ahead

  139. and go to Psalms 74.

  140. Rusty, thank you for

  141. pointing out about

  142. the technology.

  143. I would've been

  144. really awkward if

  145. I allowed on my

  146. phone this morning

  147. after you said that

  148. you're so . I usually

  149. do bring my actual

  150. Bible when I preach,

  151. but . I'm not gonna

  152. lie, sometimes I

  153. just have used the

  154. whatever I've put up

  155. on the slides, but

  156. I'm not putting this

  157. up on the slides.

  158. 'cause one,

  159. it's a lot.

  160. Um, but I think it's

  161. important to dig into

  162. the word, and I'm not

  163. gonna apologize for

  164. making you open up

  165. your Bible on Sunday,

  166. Psalm 74.

  167. Oh God.

  168. Why have you

  169. rejected us forever?

  170. Why does your anger

  171. smolder against the

  172. sheep of your pasture?

  173. Remember the nation

  174. you purchased long

  175. ago, the people

  176. you in of your

  177. inheritance, whom

  178. you redeemed, Mount

  179. Zion, where you dwelt.

  180. Turn your steps

  181. towards these

  182. everlasting ruins.

  183. All the destruction of

  184. the enemy has brought

  185. on this sanctuary.

  186. Your foes roared

  187. in the place where

  188. you met with us.

  189. They set up their

  190. standards and signs.

  191. They behaved like

  192. men wielding axes

  193. to cut through a

  194. thicket of trees.

  195. They smashed all

  196. the carved paneling

  197. with their axes

  198. and hatchets.

  199. They burned

  200. your sanctuary

  201. to the ground.

  202. They defiled the

  203. dwelling place

  204. of your name.

  205. They said in their

  206. hearts, we will crush

  207. them completely.

  208. They burned every

  209. place where God was

  210. worshiped in the

  211. land, we are given

  212. no signs from God.

  213. No prophets are left

  214. and none of us know

  215. how long this will be.

  216. How long will the

  217. enemy mock you?

  218. God?

  219. Will the foe revile

  220. your name forever?

  221. Why do you hold

  222. back your hand,

  223. your right hand?

  224. Take it from the

  225. folds of your garment

  226. and destroy them.

  227. But my God is my

  228. king from long ago.

  229. He brings

  230. salvation on earth.

  231. It was you who

  232. split open the

  233. sea by your power.

  234. You broke your heads

  235. of the monster,

  236. or you broke the

  237. heads of the monster

  238. and the waters.

  239. It was you who crushed

  240. the heads of Leviathan

  241. and gave it as food

  242. to the creatures

  243. of the desert.

  244. It was you who

  245. opened up springs

  246. and streams.

  247. You dried up the

  248. ever flowing rivers.

  249. The day is yours and

  250. yours also, the night

  251. you established the

  252. sun and the moon, it

  253. was you who set the

  254. boundaries of all the

  255. earth you made both

  256. summer and winter.

  257. Remember how the

  258. enemy has mocked

  259. you, Lord, how

  260. foolish people have

  261. reviled your name.

  262. Do not hand over the

  263. life of your dove

  264. to the wild beasts.

  265. Do not forget

  266. the lives of

  267. your afflicted

  268. people forever.

  269. Have regard for your

  270. covenant because

  271. haunts of violence

  272. fill the dark

  273. places of the land.

  274. Do not let the

  275. oppressed retreat

  276. in disgrace May the

  277. poor and the needy.

  278. Praise your name.

  279. Rise up, oh God, and

  280. defend your cause.

  281. Remember how fools

  282. mock you all day long.

  283. Do not ignore the

  284. clamor of your

  285. adversaries, the

  286. uproar of your

  287. enemies, which

  288. rises continually.

  289. Now

  290. that Psalm

  291. doesn't really tell

  292. us how it ends.

  293. It doesn't end

  294. with God coming and

  295. destroying the enemy,

  296. bringing people

  297. out of salvation.

  298. That Psalm just ends,

  299. God, remember us.

  300. There's no prophets

  301. left in this land.

  302. We feel forgotten.

  303. Please remember us.

  304. And so there are times

  305. in your life where you

  306. will be there feeling

  307. forgotten, feeling

  308. like it is silent when

  309. you pray up to God.

  310. And that silence

  311. can be deafening,

  312. especially when the

  313. enemies are yelling

  314. at you and mocking

  315. you, mocking your God.

  316. And it's hard

  317. to go on.

  318. But I wanna let

  319. you know something.

  320. How we respond to

  321. God's silence is

  322. a demonstration

  323. of our faith.

  324. Silence is not a

  325. matter of God being

  326. unfaithful to us.

  327. It's not a matter

  328. of our lack of

  329. faith necessarily,

  330. and I'm not

  331. even necessarily

  332. gonna say that.

  333. It's God testing you.

  334. But I do think it

  335. demonstrates your

  336. faith in God, how you

  337. respond to silence.

  338. You see,

  339. there's a

  340. difference between

  341. questioning God and

  342. giving up on God.

  343. It's one thing to

  344. be looking and, and

  345. saying, God, there's

  346. all these promises

  347. that you have for us,

  348. and I'm not seeing any

  349. of them and I'm, I'm

  350. struggling right now.

  351. And I'm trusting you,

  352. please come bring

  353. to my salvation.

  354. But someone who's not

  355. faithful in God is not

  356. saying, please come.

  357. 'cause that would mean

  358. they have some degree

  359. of faith if they're

  360. asking him to come.

  361. I think God uses those

  362. points of silence,

  363. those points where

  364. we've hit rock bottom

  365. to reach us the most.

  366. And it's not because

  367. of a weakness of God.

  368. It's not that God

  369. can't reach us

  370. anywhere we are in our

  371. life, but this whole

  372. thing called free

  373. will comes into place.

  374. 'cause maybe God

  375. can reach us when

  376. we're not down

  377. at rock bottom.

  378. But as much as God can

  379. reach us and scream

  380. at us and yell at us,

  381. we have to be the

  382. ones willing to

  383. listen to him.

  384. And from my personal

  385. experience, um, as a

  386. stubborn, dumb person,

  387. I am, I've not ever

  388. been able to listen

  389. to God until I've hit

  390. rock bottom because

  391. I'm convinced that I

  392. can do it on my own.

  393. And I have ways of

  394. getting out of this

  395. thing, or I don't even

  396. think I'm digging.

  397. All right.

  398. Suzy, part of that

  399. spoken word talked

  400. about us digging our

  401. holes of, of being

  402. in these places where

  403. we are, are trying to

  404. find the next solution

  405. of, of whatever

  406. struggles we have.

  407. And I think we think

  408. we're climbing out

  409. of these problems,

  410. but sometimes we're

  411. digging ourselves

  412. further, deeper into

  413. these holes and we

  414. don't even realize

  415. it until all of a

  416. sudden we've just

  417. hit rock and we

  418. can't go anywhere.

  419. And then we look up

  420. and we are way too

  421. deep to get back

  422. out, and that's when

  423. people find God,

  424. trust God rely on him.

  425. And that's maybe

  426. the bigger question.

  427. Is God silent

  428. or are you not

  429. just listening?

  430. I, I had this point

  431. in my life where I

  432. was convinced of,

  433. of what my path in

  434. life was going to be.

  435. And my mom and my dad

  436. and my brother and

  437. my friends were all

  438. telling me, this is

  439. not the right path.

  440. This is unhealthy.

  441. You need to get

  442. out of this.

  443. And I would not

  444. listen to any of

  445. them no matter how

  446. much I love them.

  447. And no matter how

  448. much logic they

  449. brought to me, I. I

  450. wouldn't listen and

  451. I had to hit rock

  452. bottom to find out.

  453. But I remember before

  454. then pleading, 'cause

  455. I thought I was

  456. doing the right thing

  457. and praying to God,

  458. like, God, I know if

  459. I just keep trying

  460. hard enough, this is

  461. gonna get better and

  462. I'm trusting you to

  463. make this get better.

  464. And it kept

  465. getting worse.

  466. And I remember

  467. praying like, God,

  468. where why aren't you?

  469. I'm doing the

  470. right things.

  471. Why aren't you

  472. making this happen?

  473. And I thought God was

  474. silent, but I just

  475. wasn't listening.

  476. Because he was

  477. speaking to me

  478. through my mom and

  479. through my friends

  480. and through my dad,

  481. but I was convinced I

  482. was gonna make things

  483. better on my own.

  484. It's a matter of

  485. listening of how God

  486. speaks to you and,

  487. and if you have this

  488. thought that God's,

  489. you're gonna be in

  490. this point and you're

  491. gonna say, God,

  492. come speak to me.

  493. And some auto voy

  494. audible voice is

  495. gonna boom down from

  496. the sky and tell you

  497. what's gonna happen.

  498. It's not impossible,

  499. but that doesn't

  500. happen a lot

  501. in scripture.

  502. It only happens to

  503. a couple of people.

  504. God might speak to you

  505. through the scriptures

  506. when you're reading,

  507. might speak to you

  508. through prayer, and

  509. maybe it's not an

  510. audible voice, maybe

  511. it's a feeling.

  512. Um, maybe it's you

  513. asking a question and

  514. then . Coming into

  515. scripture and, and

  516. seeing the answer.

  517. Maybe it's a word from

  518. a fellow Christian,

  519. from a brother or

  520. sister that speaks

  521. wisdom to you.

  522. It's a sermon that

  523. you happen across.

  524. I've heard tons

  525. of stories.

  526. I've had people

  527. come to me like,

  528. Hey, what you said

  529. was exactly what

  530. God was telling me.

  531. And, and let me tell

  532. you on the other

  533. side of it, God did

  534. not tell me, Hey.

  535. Connie's struggling

  536. with this right now,

  537. God or Dax, I want

  538. you to preach this

  539. message for Connie,

  540. like that's never

  541. happened to me.

  542. I've never preached

  543. a message for a

  544. particular person,

  545. and I think that's

  546. really dangerous.

  547. I never want my

  548. sermon to be focused

  549. on a single person.

  550. I'm not smart

  551. enough to probably

  552. choreograph that

  553. anyway, but God is,

  554. but you need to

  555. be listening and

  556. listening for

  557. the right things.

  558. Because God's not

  559. gonna speak to you

  560. exactly how you want

  561. him to speak to you.

  562. And what's also

  563. important is when you

  564. do think he's speaking

  565. to you, go to someone

  566. else, your brothers

  567. or sisters in Christ

  568. and ask them about it.

  569. 'cause I also have

  570. met people who are

  571. saying, God is telling

  572. me to do this, and

  573. I hear it and I

  574. say, I don't think

  575. that makes sense.

  576. I'm not trying to.

  577. Discourage your

  578. ability to hear God.

  579. But that doesn't

  580. line up biblically.

  581. That's not something

  582. God asks people to do.

  583. And that's why it's

  584. important that we also

  585. rely on our friends to

  586. help us listen to God,

  587. because we get clouded

  588. by our own thoughts.

  589. And I think we're

  590. running into this

  591. more than ever in the

  592. world with technology

  593. being what it is and.

  594. It's been like this

  595. for a while, but we

  596. just so desperately

  597. want the problem or

  598. the solution to all

  599. of our problems.

  600. If you're sick, take

  601. this pill, do this

  602. diet, do this regimen.

  603. It'll make it better.

  604. And sometimes you

  605. can't even say, it

  606. almost feels annoying

  607. and belittling even

  608. to like, oh, I'm

  609. sick right now.

  610. And someone's

  611. like, oh, well you

  612. need to take this.

  613. I got this vitamin C

  614. packet that you can

  615. put in your water and

  616. it'll make you better.

  617. And everyone's trying

  618. to just make our

  619. problems go away as

  620. quickly as possible.

  621. We've become so

  622. scared of hardship

  623. that we try to find

  624. the easiest solutions

  625. to get out of it.

  626. And I wanna encourage

  627. you that hard's

  628. just a part of life.

  629. There's nothing wrong

  630. with taking medicine

  631. or getting this

  632. vaccine or reading

  633. this book that gives

  634. you some steps of

  635. being more organized

  636. in your life.

  637. But if you're so

  638. desperately trying

  639. to find the perfect

  640. solution to make your

  641. life without problems,

  642. it's not gonna happen.

  643. Even if you're

  644. following God

  645. perfectly, which

  646. you won't, you're

  647. gonna have problems.

  648. I once heard a

  649. doctor talking

  650. about, uh, someone

  651. was interviewing him

  652. and, and asking about

  653. like, Hey, you know,

  654. it was, it was an

  655. actor and they were

  656. saying, I always, uh.

  657. On set.

  658. The craft food

  659. services always has

  660. those, you know,

  661. vitamin C packets

  662. that you can put

  663. in your water to

  664. help give you more

  665. vitamin C and boost

  666. your immune system.

  667. And they're like,

  668. you know, as a

  669. doctor, how do you

  670. feel about that?

  671. Is that good for

  672. your immune system

  673. or, or how, you

  674. know, does that

  675. help you get better?

  676. And he said, well,

  677. I'll tell you what

  678. it really does is

  679. it makes your pee

  680. really expensive.

  681. . And just to break

  682. that down, right,

  683. vitamin C is a water

  684. soluble vitamin.

  685. So basically your

  686. body takes it.

  687. And it dumps the

  688. rest of it that

  689. it doesn't need.

  690. And if you're eating

  691. a well balanced diet,

  692. your body should

  693. already be getting the

  694. vitamin C. It needs.

  695. It's this concept of,

  696. you know, taking in

  697. all these vitamins

  698. so you're healthier

  699. and so you don't

  700. get sick as long.

  701. It's kind of like if

  702. someone's building

  703. a house and I'm

  704. like, okay, I have

  705. you building this

  706. house, how quickly

  707. can you have it done?

  708. And they're like,

  709. well, it's gonna

  710. be a lot of labor.

  711. It's gonna take us,

  712. you know, two months.

  713. I go, okay,

  714. tell you what?

  715. What about if I

  716. give you a whole

  717. nother truckload

  718. of two by fours?

  719. How soon can

  720. you get it done?

  721. Now they'll be like,

  722. well, we already have

  723. all the equipment,

  724. so it's still gonna

  725. take two months.

  726. Okay?

  727. What about if I

  728. give you a third

  729. truckload of lumber?

  730. It's still gonna

  731. take the same amount

  732. of time, pushing

  733. more materials, if

  734. anything is just gonna

  735. make it take longer.

  736. Now, this is not a

  737. health lesson, but

  738. more what I want

  739. you to understand

  740. about life.

  741. Sometimes we just

  742. keep trying to

  743. throw things at our

  744. problems to make them

  745. go away quicker, but

  746. it's not gonna help.

  747. It's a matter of

  748. relying on God.

  749. And that's hard 'cause

  750. it's not fun to wait.

  751. And what I wanna

  752. discourage you from

  753. is almost becoming

  754. so adapted to.

  755. Easy solutions and

  756. making things go

  757. away as I think

  758. it's a detriment

  759. to our society and

  760. to our culture.

  761. And when you

  762. look at Psalm 74,

  763. it does almost

  764. seem sad when

  765. you end right?

  766. And there's

  767. not an answer.

  768. On one hand, I think

  769. that's fitting because

  770. that's how it is

  771. sometimes in life.

  772. But there actually is

  773. an answer, and part

  774. of that has to do

  775. with how you read it.

  776. So you see in Jewish

  777. writing and in

  778. Jewish culture, and

  779. even their thought,

  780. their writing

  781. wasn't the same

  782. way that we write.

  783. They have what's

  784. called castic flow.

  785. It's what's

  786. called a chiasm.

  787. And when you read

  788. the Old Testament,

  789. you'll find these,

  790. but it's kind of like

  791. if you took a text

  792. and then you put a,

  793. you put a mirror in

  794. it and then have it

  795. reflect backwards,

  796. the same thing.

  797. And I'll show you.

  798. So this first

  799. part, my people

  800. hear my teaching.

  801. Listen to the

  802. word, wait.

  803. No, that's not

  804. the right one.

  805. Sorry.

  806. Oh God.

  807. Why have you

  808. rejected us forever?

  809. Why does your anger

  810. smolder against the

  811. sheep in your pasture?

  812. Remember the nations

  813. you purchased long

  814. ago, the people of

  815. your inheritance,

  816. whom you redeemed.

  817. Mount Zion,

  818. where you dwelt.

  819. Turn your steps

  820. towards these

  821. everlasting ruins,

  822. all the destruction

  823. the enemy has brought

  824. on your sanctuary.

  825. And saying, God,

  826. listen, remember you.

  827. Remember these

  828. things that happened?

  829. Listen to us 'cause

  830. this is what's

  831. going on right now.

  832. Please remember

  833. the, the mountain

  834. that you brought us

  835. to, the inheritance

  836. you promised us.

  837. And then it goes on,

  838. on four through eight.

  839. Your foes roared

  840. in the place where

  841. you met up with us.

  842. They set up their

  843. standards, the signs.

  844. They behave like

  845. men wielding axes

  846. to cut through a

  847. thicket of trees.

  848. They smashed all

  849. the carved paneling

  850. with their axes

  851. and hatchets.

  852. They burned

  853. your sanctuary

  854. to the ground.

  855. They defiled the

  856. dwelling place

  857. of your name.

  858. They said in their

  859. hearts, we will crush

  860. them completely.

  861. They burned every

  862. place where the God

  863. had worshiped the

  864. um, where God was

  865. worshiped in the land.

  866. Here they're saying,

  867. this is what the

  868. enemy's doing.

  869. This is the situation

  870. that we're in.

  871. Right

  872. then it goes on.

  873. We have give.

  874. We are given no

  875. signs from God.

  876. No prophets are left,

  877. and none of us know

  878. how long this will be.

  879. How long will the

  880. enemy mock you?

  881. God?

  882. Will the foe revile

  883. your name forever?

  884. And why do you hold

  885. back your hand,

  886. your right hand?

  887. Take it from the

  888. folds of your garment

  889. and destroy them.

  890. God, we don't know

  891. where you are,

  892. but we need you

  893. to do something.

  894. And then there's

  895. this middle part that

  896. sticks out from the

  897. rest of the psalm.

  898. The God is my king

  899. from long ago.

  900. He brings salvation

  901. on the earth.

  902. God has been king

  903. and will continue

  904. to be king,

  905. but then it goes back.

  906. It was you who split

  907. open the sea by your

  908. power, you broke

  909. the heads of the

  910. monster in the waters.

  911. It was you who

  912. crushed the heads

  913. of the leviathan

  914. and gave it to the

  915. food, gave it as

  916. food to the creatures

  917. of the desert.

  918. It was you who

  919. opened up springs

  920. and streams.

  921. You dried up the

  922. ever flowing rivers.

  923. The day is yours.

  924. Um, the day is yours.

  925. And yours also, the

  926. night you established

  927. the sun in the

  928. moon, it was your,

  929. it was you who set

  930. all the boundaries

  931. of the earth.

  932. You made both

  933. summer and winter.

  934. They went from.

  935. Before saying we

  936. don't have signs,

  937. you're here,

  938. prophets are gone.

  939. And then now they're

  940. saying, but there

  941. were these things

  942. that happened before

  943. acknowledging that

  944. signs have been

  945. given in the past.

  946. And then this last

  947. section is really

  948. the other two kind

  949. of together mirrored

  950. back and forth.

  951. Remember, the

  952. enemy has mocked

  953. you, Lord, how

  954. foolish people have

  955. reviled your name.

  956. Do not hand over the

  957. life of your dove

  958. to the wild beasts.

  959. Do not forget

  960. the lives of

  961. your afflicted.

  962. People forever have

  963. regard for your

  964. covenant because

  965. haunts of violence

  966. fill the dark

  967. places of this land.

  968. Do not let the

  969. oppressed retreat

  970. and disgrace may

  971. the poor and needy.

  972. Praise your name.

  973. Rise up, oh God, and

  974. defend your cause.

  975. Remember how fools

  976. mock you all day long.

  977. Do not ignore the

  978. clamor of your

  979. adversaries, the

  980. uproar of your

  981. enemies, which

  982. rises continually.

  983. So you see how if you

  984. lift that up, it's

  985. kinda like a mirror.

  986. See, in, in Jewish,

  987. when they write in

  988. chiasm, the point

  989. is actually it's

  990. not where we make

  991. our conclusion.

  992. Our, at the end

  993. of, of our writing.

  994. For them, it's in

  995. the middle and it's

  996. about the symmetry.

  997. It's about

  998. making the point.

  999. And then kind of

  1000. reiterating the issue

1001. as we go back on.

1002. So if you read the

  1003. end of the Psalm,

  1004. looking for conclusion

1005. as we do it does

  1006. seem like it ends.

  1007. Very sad.

  1008. We don't know

  1009. where God is.

  1010. Hopefully he's coming.

  1011. But when you look

1012. at it with verse 12

  1013. being the conclusion,

  1014. being the main point,

  1015. my God is king.

1016. My king from long ago.

  1017. He brings

  1018. salvation on earth.

  1019. Despite all these

  1020. problems, the Psalmist

  1021. is recognizing that

1022. God is king, that he

  1023. reigns and he will

  1024. continue to reign.

  1025. They have hope and

  1026. they trust in God

  1027. despite all the

  1028. atrocities they're

  1029. facing, despite God

  1030. being mocked in his

  1031. temple, being torn

  1032. down and burned,

  1033. God is king.

  1034. And he reigns.

  1035. And so when you're

  1036. in those times

  1037. of trouble, I'm

  1038. not gonna say you

  1039. shouldn't be grieving,

  1040. but have faith

  1041. that he's there.

  1042. And I get that.

  1043. That doesn't make the

  1044. silence any easier.

  1045. It might still

  1046. be a struggle.

  1047. And so I wanna

  1048. encourage you

  1049. with this, God is

  1050. getting you used

1051. to a quiet that you

  1052. desperately need.

  1053. 'cause there's a

  1054. difference between

  1055. silence and quiet.

  1056. Silence means there's

  1057. nothing there.

  1058. Quiet means something

  1059. is not speaking.

  1060. We live in a

  1061. noisy world.

  1062. You look at the

  1063. news, you go to

  1064. work, you car, horns,

  1065. podcasts, radio.

  1066. It's rough.

  1067. Even if you're like, I

  1068. don't like this news.

  1069. This news is, you

  1070. know, this news

  1071. is just too angry,

  1072. or it just, it's

  1073. making me depressed.

1074. So you go to another

  1075. news and they just,

  1076. and they tell you

  1077. how wrong that news

  1078. was, but they also

  1079. just sound angry and

  1080. that's depressing.

1081. In fact, even in our

  1082. culture, we have a, a

  1083. word used to describe

  1084. this concept of even

  1085. just being on your

  1086. phone and looking

  1087. at the news, right?

  1088. They call it

  1089. doom scrolling.

  1090. Have you

  1091. heard of that?

  1092. Of just you're

  1093. endlessly scrolling

  1094. and it's just

  1095. depressing seeing

  1096. all the things going

  1097. on in this world.

  1098. We

1099. live in a loud world,

  1100. and I think sometimes

  1101. God's just trying to

  1102. get us into quiet.

1103. And also when you look

1104. at most of the times

  1105. in the Bible, when

  1106. someone comes to God

  1107. and finds God, they're

  1108. not in the temple.

  1109. They're not in a whole

  1110. group of people, but

  1111. it's usually someone

  1112. individually out in

  1113. the middle of nowhere.

  1114. Mary was out by

  1115. herself when an angel

1116. came to her and told

  1117. her that she was

  1118. going to deliver

  1119. the son of God.

  1120. Moses was approached.

  1121. He wasn't by anybody.

  1122. A burning bush came

  1123. and approached him

1124. and called out to him.

  1125. It's in the quiet

  1126. places where God

  1127. speaks to us best.

  1128. Maybe that's

  1129. where God's trying

  1130. to take you.

  1131. I mean, rusty was

  1132. just talking about

  1133. his trip with

  1134. Marty a while back.

1135. Where they were out in

  1136. the middle of nowhere

  1137. and not in contact

  1138. with anybody and no

  1139. phones, and that's

  1140. where you connect

  1141. with God the most.

  1142. Right?

  1143. This world has

  1144. convinced us that we

  1145. need more talking.

  1146. We need more books

  1147. that give us all

  1148. the solutions.

  1149. We need more podcasts

  1150. and self-help, books,

  1151. all these things.

  1152. Sometimes

  1153. less is more.

  1154. And I'm not saying

  1155. you're a bad person

  1156. or you're a sinner.

1157. If you've read any of

1158. these books or done of

  1159. these things, I don't.

  1160. I think it's okay

  1161. in quantity like

  1162. most things, but

1163. we need to also just

  1164. get used to quiet

  1165. and not having to

  1166. have the next thing

  1167. to get us through.

  1168. 'cause God isn't

  1169. the next thing.

  1170. He's always

  1171. been the thing.

  1172. He's been the thing

  1173. ever since Jesus

  1174. died for us and

  1175. even before then.

  1176. CS Lewis wrote

  1177. about this concept.

  1178. Um, if, if you've

  1179. read the book, the

  1180. Screw Tape or the,

  1181. uh, book letters,

  1182. it's more of a play.

  1183. The screw

  1184. tape letters.

  1185. The whole concept

  1186. of this is, it's

  1187. these demons writing

  1188. these letters.

  1189. They're, um, talking

1190. back and forth of how

  1191. they can carry out

  1192. the plan of Satan,

  1193. um, and how they're

  1194. going to defeat God

  1195. and how they're gonna

  1196. be his adversary.

  1197. So there's this

  1198. passage that I'm

  1199. gonna read for you,

  1200. and this is demons

  1201. speaking, just to

  1202. make that clear.

  1203. Music and silence, how

  1204. I detest them both.

  1205. How thankful

  1206. we should be.

  1207. That ever since our

  1208. father entered hell,

  1209. though no longer,

  1210. no longer go than

  1211. humans reckoning in

  1212. light years could

  1213. express no square inch

  1214. of infernal space.

  1215. And no moment of

  1216. infernal time has

  1217. been surrendered

  1218. to either of these

  1219. abominable forces,

  1220. but all has been

  1221. occupied by noise.

  1222. Noise.

  1223. The grand dynamism.

  1224. The audible

  1225. expression of all

  1226. that is exultant,

  1227. ruthless, and Vero

  1228. noise, which alone

  1229. defends us from silly

  1230. qualms, despairing

  1231. scruples, and

  1232. impossible desires.

  1233. We will make the

  1234. whole universe a

  1235. noise in the end.

  1236. We have already made

  1237. great strides in

  1238. this direction as

  1239. regards to the earth.

  1240. The melodies and

  1241. silences of heaven

  1242. will be shouted

1243. down in the end, but

  1244. I admit we're not

  1245. yet loud enough or

  1246. anything like it.

  1247. Research is

  1248. in progress.

  1249. Satan is trying to

  1250. overwhelm you with

  1251. noise so that you

  1252. cannot hear God and

  1253. you cannot sing the

  1254. melodies of heaven.

  1255. And that brings me

  1256. to my last point.

  1257. Silence is a vacancy

  1258. waiting to be

  1259. filled with praises.

  1260. All right.

  1261. We sung about singing

1262. in the middle of his

  1263. storm, we sung about

  1264. God being a fountain

  1265. that's ever flowing.

1266. I do love that song

  1267. on my fountains.

  1268. It's one of my

  1269. favorite songs.

  1270. Um, I think I

  1271. introduced it to

  1272. the church years

1273. ago when I did my

  1274. senior sermon, uh,

  1275. over a decade ago,

  1276. um, in college.

  1277. But I didn't just

  1278. do that 'cause it's

  1279. my favorite song,

  1280. but it fits so

  1281. perfectly with what

1282. that I wanted to say.

  1283. Right?

  1284. The beginning of

  1285. that song is this

  1286. dry and desert land.

  1287. I tell myself,

  1288. keep walking on.

1289. We get in places with

1290. God where we just feel

1291. like I'm in the desert

  1292. and that's scriptural.

  1293. That's where people

  1294. find God in the

  1295. desert, but we just

  1296. keep walking on.

1297. But walking on is much

  1298. more than just faking

1299. it till you make it.

  1300. Let's go over

  1301. to Psalm 43.

  1302. Take me a second

  1303. to get there too.

  1304. Here's the Psalm.

  1305. In the similar

  1306. situation as the last.

  1307. Vindicate me, my

  1308. God, and plead my

  1309. cause against an

  1310. unfaithful nation.

  1311. Rescue me from

  1312. those who are

  1313. deceitful and wicked.

  1314. You are my God

  1315. and my stronghold.

  1316. Why have you

  1317. rejected me?

1318. Why must th go on

  1319. mourning, oppressed

  1320. by the enemy?

1321. Send me your light and

  1322. your faithful care.

  1323. Let them lead me.

  1324. Let them bring

  1325. me to your holy

  1326. mountain, to the

  1327. place where you dwell.

1328. Then I will go to

  1329. the altar of God.

1330. To my God, my joy

  1331. and my delight.

  1332. I will praise

  1333. you with a liar.

  1334. Oh my God.

  1335. I did forget I

  1336. put this one up

  1337. there for you guys.

1338. So that was my Ben,

  1339. but I'm glad you

  1340. written your Bibles,

  1341. but then it ends.

1342. Why am I so are

  1343. you downcast?

  1344. Why are you so

  1345. disturbed within me?

  1346. Put your hope in

  1347. God for I will

  1348. yet praise him, my

  1349. savior, and my God.

  1350. Now, this psalm is

1351. not written in a CTIC

  1352. structure, so here

1353. we do have the end

  1354. kind of being what

  1355. the lasting thought

  1356. is for everybody,

  1357. something

  1358. important here.

  1359. That word praise,

  1360. that's the Hebrew

  1361. word, yaah.

  1362. Now that word doesn't

  1363. just mean to sing.

  1364. In fact, really when

1365. you look at that word,

  1366. it actually means to

  1367. cast, to shoot it's

  1368. directional and it's

  1369. aiming at something.

1370. When I am someone who

  1371. maybe just sings songs

1372. in the car or I'm at

  1373. a concert, especially

  1374. when I'm listening

  1375. to secular music

  1376. or whatever I sing.

  1377. I'm not a good singer,

1378. but I do sing and

  1379. sometimes I just

  1380. belt it out, not

  1381. really belting it

  1382. out for my pleasure.

  1383. I'm not singing

  1384. to the band.

  1385. When I've gone to a

  1386. concert and I sang

  1387. out loud, which is

1388. not really who I am

  1389. anyway, I'm not a very

  1390. expressive person,

  1391. but I'm not singing

1392. it so that the front

1393. man will hear me or

1394. the people next to me.

  1395. I definitely don't

  1396. want the people next

1397. to me to hear me.

  1398. It's just singing.

  1399. 'cause for whatever

  1400. reason feels right.

  1401. I enjoy it.

  1402. Um, I like the

1403. song, I like the way

  1404. it makes me feel.

  1405. That's not what

  1406. worship is.

  1407. That's not what

  1408. praising God is.

  1409. Maybe you're a

  1410. great singer.

  1411. And that's awesome.

  1412. And that's a gift

  1413. God's given you.

  1414. So you can sing

  1415. praises to him.

  1416. But a good worship

  1417. leader knows that

  1418. their great singing

1419. is not so much about

  1420. singing good for

  1421. the congregation,

  1422. but singing

  1423. praises to God

  1424. that are beautiful.

  1425. And it's, it's nice

1426. for all of us when

  1427. it's beautiful, right?

  1428. But that's not

  1429. what it's about.

1430. And I love that with

  1431. our worship team,

  1432. that people who are

1433. up here are not up

  1434. here because they

  1435. want everyone to

  1436. see the concert that

  1437. they're putting on.

  1438. They want to help

  1439. us all praise

  1440. and worship God.

  1441. When you go target

  1442. practicing, I mean,

  1443. could you imagine

  1444. if people are just

  1445. like, I mean, let's

  1446. just see what happens

  1447. and just shoot like

  1448. randomly, right?

  1449. No, they're aiming.

  1450. There's . All these

  1451. techniques that

1452. they've put in to make

  1453. sure they hit their

  1454. target well, and so

  1455. that's what praise is.

  1456. I'm singing to God,

  1457. I have a method and

  1458. I'm concentrating.

  1459. I have aim.

  1460. Our praise is

  1461. something to be

  1462. directed at God, not

  1463. for anybody else.

  1464. Look, I'm sorry for

  1465. the clicker issues

  1466. and if you're someone

  1467. who goes to this

  1468. church and is like,

  1469. what did the deal

  1470. with these people

  1471. doing the slides?

1472. I can do it better.

1473. Hey, if you can do

  1474. it better, great.

  1475. Please come on

  1476. The clicker team.

  1477. There's only three

  1478. of us, right?

1479. I had to be it today

  1480. 'cause, and I'm

  1481. preaching and I didn't

1482. wanna do it while I'm

  1483. preaching, so we'd

  1484. love to have you.

  1485. But my problem, and

  1486. I can't speak for

  1487. anybody else, my

  1488. problem is, is I

  1489. just start singing

  1490. and I get caught

  1491. up in the worship.

  1492. I, a lot of times

  1493. I'll, I'll close my

  1494. eyes and I'm singing

1495. the songs and then I

1496. open and I see where

  1497. like five things

  1498. back, I'm like, shoot.

  1499. And I'm sorry, but

  1500. I'm also not sorry

1501. because I love God and

  1502. sometimes I get caught

  1503. up in worshiping

1504. him and I have to

1505. just like, I need to

  1506. actively pursue God.

  1507. That becomes a

  1508. muscle memory of

  1509. pursuing God and

  1510. singing to him when

  1511. not thinking about

  1512. other people that

  1513. I have to actively

1514. think to not do it.

1515. So I can look at

  1516. the screen and be

  1517. like, okay, okay,

  1518. So I just wanna

  1519. encourage you.

  1520. Times are gonna

  1521. be hard and maybe

  1522. it might feel like

  1523. faking it till you

  1524. make it, but you

  1525. develop that muscle

  1526. memory, praise God.

  1527. And so I just

  1528. wanna leave you

  1529. with those last,

  1530. uh, that last verse

1531. in that psalm for I

  1532. will yet praise him,

1533. my savior and my God.

  1534. Bow heads with

  1535. me in prayer.

  1536. God, thank you so

  1537. much for today.

  1538. Um.

  1539. Uh, thank you that

  1540. everything worked

  1541. out with me already

  1542. preaching today that

  1543. Andy was, um, Andy

  1544. and Jamie were able

1545. to go off to, um,

  1546. the funeral they

  1547. needed to be at

  1548. without any worries.

  1549. Um, thank you for

  1550. granting me your words

1551. so that we can all

  1552. grow closer to you.

  1553. Um,

  1554. help us get

  1555. used to silence.

  1556. That we crave.

  1557. Silence your quietness

  1558. in a noisy world.

  1559. Create opportunity

  1560. for us to praise

1561. you and be with us.

  1562. Always.

  1563. Amen.

  1564. Now I forgot to

  1565. grab people to

  1566. do announcements.

  1567. So Ainsley really

  1568. wants to do

  1569. announcements.

  1570. Actually, can

  1571. I have Ainsley?

  1572. Good job volunteering

  1573. your parents.

  1574. Can I have Josh

  1575. and Audrey come up

  1576. here and actually

  1577. do announcements?

  1578. I mean, if fancy

  1579. wants to come

  1580. up, that's fine.

  1581. Is it on?

  1582. Can you hear us?

  1583. Hello?

  1584. Yeah.

  1585. Alright, so tonight

  1586. we've got ba

  1587. bam, six o'clock

  1588. teens be there.

  1589. It's gonna be

  1590. a lot of fun.

  1591. I mean, hit the

  1592. button again.

  1593. We've also got

  1594. the college age

  1595. small group.

1596. Um, is it at Andy

  1597. and Jamie's still

  1598. five to seven.

1599. Five to seven at Bowl

  1600. 32 for the college

  1601. age Juice group.

  1602. Woo.

  1603. Alright, Ainsley,

  1604. um, Wednesday Night

  1605. Women's Group, uh,

  1606. second and fourth.

  1607. We, we Wednesdays

  1615. 'cause you guys

  1616. are the odd ones.

  1630. Six 30 to 10

  1631. we'll meet across

  1632. the street.

  1633. Yes.

  1634. If you have questions,

  1635. talk to him.

  1636. 'cause he knows

1637. what's going on on me.

  1638. But we're gonna have a

1639. lot of fun either way.
