Complain, Argue, Do Nothing | March 23, 2025

You can have a seat

for just a second

if you would.

And I think the

worship man, you

guys can have a seat

too if you want to,

but uh, I'm gonna

do a little nah.

I don't really know

what I'm gonna do.

We'll figure it

out as we go.

But, uh, one thing

I love about the

real church of

Jesus Christ is that

scripture teaches

us that, uh, the

amazing lead pastor

with the awesome

jokes isn't the

head of the church.

The elders controlling

the bank role

are not the head

of the church.

Jamie, the pastor's

wife might be the head

of, no, I'm not saying

that's not true.

You're good, Robin.

You can have a seat.

Your hands are tired.

No worries.

But Jesus is the head

of the church and he

speaks to his people.

And you may not

realize it, but we've

already sort of had

church, so like we

could just leave now.

Just kidding.

No, not was

it kidding?

Not kidding.

I think it's

sort of legit.

But I've been

wrestling this

week and uh, it's

just interesting.

It may be where we go

this morning, because

early in this week

I had this really

cool passage I read

and I was like, man,

this is kind of cool.

And so I spent some

time, as I normally

do, uh, this is what

the Holy Spirit has

to deal with with me.

I'll get inspired

by God's word

and be like, man.

And then I will start

my voice recording

and I just start

going walk all over

my house, talk.

And I'm sure

the Lord's like,

please stop, dude.

Just stop.

What are you

doing ? Right?

But I built out

this amazing sermon.

It was gonna be really

great in Galatians.

It was really cool.

And then I went to

school that day and

a kid came up to me

and said, Hey, uh,

what do you think

about this verse?

And it was the same

verse I'd been working

on all morning.

And I was like,

cha-ching, that's

what I'm supposed

to preach on.

Yes.

So I was ready and

then I read this

other passage and

I was like, PO.

Ooh boy, this is

also pretty good.

God, you got some

good stuff in here.

And then a kid later

that day, you can

guess it, right, was

like, Hey, Mr. Wait,

what about this?

And then I was like,

oh, Wyatt Rock's

getting two sermons.

Wyatt Rock.

Oh no.

That's how I did.

So I spent all week

playing with this and

messing with this as

I think I'm gonna get

to heaven one day.

And the Holy

Spirit's gonna be

like, Hey Andy.

Sometimes just

the ping pongs

entertaining, you

know what I mean?

I just like watching

you do this.

Uh, 'cause it's my

job as I see it, as a

pastor, as a shepherd

to get face on my

face before the Lord

and just say, Lord,

what do we wanna

say to your people?

And so I've got

a lot of stuff

I want to say.

In fact, I built

out this really

cool slideshow that

unpacks this passage

from Ephesians

that I really want

to talk about.

You guys hear

that little ring?

Is that just my ears?

I dunno if we

can, that's not

just your ears.

Uh, but that's

probably case

in point.

I'm gonna do something

low key this morning.

I think.

Now here's the problem

with saying low key.

I know this generation

up here is like,

oh wait, low key.

Yeah.

Okay.

And some of you are

like, okay, he's just

gonna do something.

Low tech and chill.

I mean low tech

and chill, unless

it's cool and

then it's low key.

You know what

I'm saying?

So we'll just kind

of work this out

as a blending.

But I spent a little

time this week over

in Ephesians chapter

two, specifically

in the ESV.

And I think what

I'm just gonna do is

unpack a little bit

with you, low tech.

Let's forget the

distracting visuals.

We spent the morning

really together as the

church being reminded

of the gift that God

gives us in rescuing

us, in saving us from

sin and death, walking

with us through the

hills, the valleys,

all the things

that we experience

in this life.

And there's a

passage in Ephesians

chapter two.

That I think, uh, I,

this week as I walked

through it for me, you

know, we were at this

funeral last weekend,

thanks to everybody

holding down the fort

while we were gone.

And when you walk

through the valley

of the shadow of

death, when you're

walking with people

who experience

death in this life,

you're reminded of

what really matters.

You know, it's not

shoes, it's not cars,

it's not 4 0 1 ks.

It's not hair, right?

There's stuff

that just doesn't

matter, but there

is some stuff that

really does matter.

And Paul says in

the ESV and gala,

or, uh, Galatians,

Ephesians chapter two,

he says this awesome

phrase, he says,

but you were dead.

You were dead in

your trespasses

and your sin.

You were dead.

And I did some

work in the Greek

because I think it's

fascinating to dig

a little bit right.

And I discovered that

this, uh, Negroes

word in the, in the

Greek is this really

cool word picture.

Here's the picture

of this word in

the Greek, when the

scripture says you

were dead in your

trespasses and sin.

This is the picture.

It paints

dead.

I was really

bummed, right?

'cause I was

gonna be like,

oh, there's gonna

be layers of God.

It's just dead.

Right?

Dead.

You were dead

in your sin.

Paul's talking to

the church in Ephesus

and he's like,

guys, you were dead.

Dead.

And you know, I

think sometimes as

followers of Jesus, we

sort of, uh, we just

sort of forget that

apart from salvation

through Jesus Christ

in a relationship

with him, we're dead.

And I think we make

the mistakes sometimes

in the scriptures of

trying to make things

sort of like, uh.

Metaphor or allegory

or word picture that

we were dying or dead.

It's the contrast

between enjoyment

and pain and

joy and stuff.

Now it's just dead.

Here's a

spiritual reality.

Apart from

relationship with

Jesus Christ.

We are dead

in our sin.

Oh, we're living

in this life.

We're walking around

with this flesh,

but man, we're dead.

Men walking, right?

Our execution and our

destination is set for

death and destruction

because of our sin,

trespass, and sin.

That says in Ephesians

chapter two, verse

one, our trespasses

and our sin.

Because of that,

we are dead, and

we forget that.

You grow up in

the church, you're

like, eh, whatever.

Take it.

Leave it.

Kind of find some

stuff we like, but

death, eternal death.

Apart from

relationship with

Jesus Christ and

trespass and sin.

It's interesting that

both words get used in

that scripture, right?

Because you would

think you'd just say

sin or something like

that, but, but it's

separated and it's

two different words.

The word in trespass

is like, uh, pato or

something like that.

Really fun to say

for trespass, and

it literally is, is

from two root words

that mean to be

beside and then to

fall away or to fail.

And so this word

trespass really is

a picture of, I was

maybe beside, but

I made choices and

my actions, I went

the other direction.

I fell away.

I failed.

I walked away

from where I was.

That's that image

of sin as trespass

in the scripture.

The Bible says We're

dead because of our

trespasses, because of

our choosing to walk

away, to fall away,

to not be beside the

path that Jesus is

calling us to walk in.

It's kind of

specific sin in

our life, right?

But then the word sin,

armadillos word is,

is one that gets used

for a lot of things in

in the sin category.

But one way we unpack

this word is this idea

of missing the mark.

So we have trespass,

this specific

individual sin in

my life that dooms

me to death, but

also there's this

overarching general

sin in my life.

'cause I'm part

of a fallen race

of humanity that

has completely

missed the mark.

In some sense,

deliberate sin in

my life is trespass.

And then.

Sin as a big general

picture is just

not quite living

up to the standard

God has for me.

And so the scripture

says really loud

and clearly like you

were dead because

of your choices.

To be disobedient

to God and to to

walk against the

holy God's direct

and clear will for

how we should live.

But you're also dead

because you can't and

you don't measure up.

And Paul goes in and

explains a little

bit of why, right?

Because we're

following the stuff

of this world.

He says, we're

following the prince

of the power of the

heir who's at work

in the world around

us and the sons

of disobedience.

We have a world

that's just drawn

us and pulling us

to walk contrary

to what God says.

So we're gonna

trespass all the time

if we're following the

world's way of living.

It.

And we have a

real enemy who is

actively trying

to destroy, right?

To try to just bring

destruction and lead

us away from God.

He speaks lies

and deception.

It's one of the

reasons we gotta stop

and pray together as

the church to, to pray

for God's protection,

to pray for God's

presence, but also

to pray for God's

perspective, right?

Because the devil

is constantly lying

to us and telling us

twisted versions of

the truth, to lead us

away from endurance

and perseverance

and faithfulness and

following Christ.

And sometimes we gotta

come alongside each

other and pray, man,

I wish I had an answer

for your situation.

I wish I could

snap my fingers

and fix everything,

but I can't.

But God is faithful.

He was faithful then.

It's a good

word, right?

He'll be faithful now.

Don't give up for

at the proper time,

you'll reap a harvest.

Galatians six,

nine would've been

a great sermon.

I'm just saying.

Okay.

Um, so we have

trespass, we have sin,

we have following this

world and following

really the deception

of the enemy.

And it says, we were

formerly people who

gave into the cravings

of the flesh, right?

The cravings of

the sinful nature.

We just did stuff to

make the body happy

and the mind happy.

Ephesians says that

we were chasing

physical pleasure

experiences, thrills,

highs, emotions, we're

chasing all those

things to satisfy

our flesh, but we're

also chasing thoughts

and imaginations that

set itself up against

the knowledge of God,

ideas and concepts

that the world gave

us, not the Lord.

And those things

became destinations

and goals and

objectives that we

chased after for

all we were worth.

Right.

So we gave into these

things, chasing after

the flesh, after the

body and the mind.

And scripture says,

, we became and were

deserving of death.

Children of wrath like

the rest of mankind,

children of wrath,

meaning there's no

condemnation for

those who are in

Christ Jesus, but

for those who are

not in Christ Jesus,

there is absolutely

condemnation and

destruction and

the wrath of God

as a consequence.

And then there's

this phrase, and it

might be the greatest

phrase ever uttered

in human history.

You know what it is in

light of all of this,

dead in your sin.

Trespass.

Dead chasing after

the world, dead,

trying to satisfy the

flesh and the mind.

Children of

wrath doomed

for destruction,

hopeless, helpless,

but God.

But God interjection

into humanity into

the moment of total

utter destruction,

hopelessness,

and despair.

We were

dead , but God.

That's epic, guys.

But God, God who

Scripture says right

here as the following

phrase, who is rich

in mercy, but God,

who is rich in mercy.

'cause of his crazy,

epic, awesome love.

That's my

translation, made

us alive in Christ.

But God who is rich

in mercy, and maybe

it's an important

distinction, right?

Mercy and grace, you

know the difference.

They're different and

sometimes we just use

'em interchangeably,

and I get that.

And they're kind of

bookends of, of God's

epic work in this

passage in Ephesians

chapter two, mercy.

Mercy is not

getting what you

deserve, not getting

what you deserve.

Grace is getting what

you don't deserve.

Getting what you

don't deserve.

Mercy.

I deserve punishment.

I deserve death.

Children of wrath.

That's what I

have earned.

The wages of

sin is death.

This is what

I deserve.

I've lived after

chasing the things

of this world.

I've lived after,

trying to satisfy

the sinful nature,

the body, the mind,

chasing after the

enemy, and letting

me, letting him

speak truth claims

into my life.

I've done all

of these things.

I deserve death.

So we're not talking

about grace right now.

We're talking about

God's rich in mercy,

that he does not give

us what we deserve,

but God who is rich

in not giving us

what we deserve.

Now, don't make a

mistake here and think

that means in this

life, the choices,

the situations that

we bring about by

our sinfulness, don't

have consequences

that follow us in

this existence.

They do.

There are consequences

because God is

rich in mercy.

Doesn't mean you kill

somebody and then you

get to do whatever

you want because

you prayed and asked

him to forgive you.

but don't miss this

little reality.

We're so foolish

because all we measure

is the temporary

god's measuring the

eternal here, guys.

He's looking at the

big picture of the

stuff that matters,

not the short term.

We make choices in

this life that have

consequences that

sometimes we can't

escape, and though

he is merciful not

giving us what we

deserve, his mercy

is on a grander scale

than we ever think.

It's on the scale

of eternal death

and eternal life.

God is merciful

and those who come

to Christ come to

faith in Him, who

confess him as

Lord and believe

that he is Lord.

Those people do not

get what they deserve

for all eternity.

We're so shortsighted.

We're looking at the

temporary and we're

like, God didn't fix

my little problem

with my dumb choice.

No, no.

Forget that nonsense.

Look at the big

picture of things.

To come to faith in

Christ means you don't

get what you deserve.

Eternal death.

You don't get that

because of what

he did, because

God is rich,

abundant in mercy.

And you might

be like, why?

Well, the next phrase

says, because of his

epic, ridiculous,

crazy, great love

for us, right?

Why?

'cause he loves you.

'cause he loves you.

I have two sons that

I love like crazy and

I keep finding myself

doing things for them

that I set back and I

say, wow, maybe that

was like not even in

their best interest.

And maybe I shouldn't

have bailed 'em

outta this or helped

them with that

'cause they need

to learn and grow.

But I have a hard

time not doing it

because I love them.

And this'll shock you.

Not all the guys

at my house are

always worthy

of amazing love.

It's just when the

college guy comes

back, Jed's fine.

But you know

what I'm saying?

Like right at the

end of the day.

But see, that's the

crazy thing about

love and God's agape,

unconditional love

that he has for us.

He loves you.

Why?

Because he loves you.

Yeah, but, but why?

Because he loves you.

It's really fun to

watch people who

love each other and

try to really dig

into the why, right?

Because at some

point in time they

come to a place

where they're like,

yes, you can show me

the pros and cons.

I understand, but

dang it, I love him

and I can't explain

why I just do, right?

What if God

just loves you?

He just loves you

and he shouldn't.

I know who some

of you are.

I look in the mirror

and I know who I am.

What is God thinking?

Loving me, but he

loves us because

of his great

love, but God.

Who is rich in mercy,

not giving us what

we deserve because

of his great love.

And don't miss

this phrase, even

when we were still

transgressors, even

while we were yet

sinners, even while

we were still living

in rebellion and sin.

And this Ephesian

scripture says, even

when we were dead in

our transgressions,

he made us

alive in Christ.

Super important

phrase.

It wasn't when you

finally got your act

together that he made

you alive in Christ.

It wasn't when

you finally earned

it because you

sacrificed enough

goats, you did enough

self-denial, you

begged, you pleaded.

You were

desperate for God.

And so he made you

alive in Christ.

No.

While you sucked and

you were a sinner.

While you were dead,

that's when he acted.

When you could

do nothing, he

did everything.

You did nothing

to receive life

from death.

You could do nothing.

'cause see, if

you deserved it,

it wouldn't be

mercy, right?

Because by

definition, mercy

is only not getting

what you deserve.

And if you deserve

to not die well

then it wouldn't be

mercy from the Lord.

Would it 'cause

that would be unjust

that you would die.

But we were justified

in facing eternal

death because of

our sin and God who

is rich in mercy,

while we were dead,

stepped in, but

God and he made us

alive in Christ.

The contrast between

dead and alive is

as far of a spectrum

as you can get.

And let me say

this, man, I've been

praying this prayer

a little bit lately.

Like, Lord, please

restore to me the

joy of my salvation.

It's a prayer.

David prayed because

here's what happens

in this life.

We forget we

were dead.

We forget we

were dead.

And we start measuring

all the good things

we've done compared

to the bad things

other people do.

And pretty soon we

get to a place where

we warrant God's

goodness, we actually

deserve better than

what we're getting out

of this thing where

maybe I'm pretty good

and maybe what God

did for me isn't as

significant as what

I thought initially.

People who are

rescued from death

are changed forever.

They're transformed.

Their perspective

shifts.

I'm reading about

some, these guys

coming out of the

Hamas, uh, hostage

stuff from death

to life, right?

Forever changed

the perspective.

Never.

Now you can get numb

and you can chase

and you can medicate,

but man, if you're

paying any attention

at all, you were dead.

And now you're alive.

That's as far

as we can get.

The devil has done

an amazing job of

tricking us into

thinking we were

kind of alive and

now we're more alive.

Or maybe we're never

really that dead to

begin with, 'cause

of the grace and

goodness of God.

No, no, no.

If we don't repent of

our sin, if we don't

come before him and

confess Jesus as the

Lord of our life,

believe in our hearts,

God raised him from

the dead, and repent

and come into faith

in Jesus Christ and

believe in Him as the

payment for our sin.

There is condemnation,

there is death.

That's what scripture

teaches loudly, and

nobody wants to preach

that, and nobody wants

to say you're going

to Hell without Jesus.

We want to say, Hey,

you can get better and

better in this life,

and you can become

more skilled as a

person and have better

abilities to love your

neighbor as yourself.

But we forget to

say, Hey guys,

you were dead.

Paul reminds the

church in Ephesus.

You were dead,

dead, dead, dead,

dead, dead, dead.

But the mercy of

God made you alive

in Christ Jesus.

And then he says,

it is by grace that

you are saved that

none may boast.

Yeah, says a lot

of places in the

New Testament, it

is by grace that

you are saved.

His mercy does not

give us eternal

death that we deserve

through Jesus.

There is now no

condemnation for those

who are in Christ.

Right?

But that's not the

end of the picture.

Not only.

Were we dead?

But God in his

mercy rescued us

and saved us from

what we deserved.

He also

is gracious and

he gives us what

we don't deserve.

We're not just

rescued from death.

We're given

eternal life.

We're not just

rescued from being

aliens and foreigners

and rebellious

people doomed

for destruction.

We're given status

as sons and daughters

in the family of God.

We're brought

to his table.

We're invited to

Heaven's Christmas

party as family

members because

of God's grace.

We deserve death.

And he's merciful

and he didn't give

us what we deserved.

But the heart of our

God is so crazy big

with his love for us.

He also takes it a

step further and gives

us abundant life in

him for all eternity.

And I gotta say, man,

as followers of Jesus

Christ, if we could

step back out of our

circumstances, which

is super hard to do,

but step back out

of our circumstances

just long enough to

view our circumstances

in light of the

eternal reality of

what Jesus did for

us, our circumstances

become very small.

Our trials in

this life become

really small.

What Paul say, man,

they're all kind of

meaningless and they

are far outweighed

by the glory that

awaits us in Christ.

Jesus loves you.

He came and he

paid the price.

That's what the

season of land is.

Preparation

for Easter, the

resurrection of Jesus.

Good Friday, the

ridiculously awesome

payment of Jesus

making us alive.

Him kicking open

the tomb to give

us victory over

sin and death

for all eternity.

Easter's an amazing

season, but the whole

gospel message is

summed up in what Paul

said to the church in

Ephesus, you were dead

in your sins, but God,

he stepped in and he

didn't give you what

you deserved, and he

made you so alive that

you're getting what

you don't even and

couldn't ever earn

status and eternity of

joy and hope with him.

That's the gospel.

And that's why

we get together

as the church.

That's why we sing

songs about the old

rugged cross that

actually matter

to us because that

cross bought us that

life from death.

And there's really two

groups of people in

that whole passage.

Paul's addressin,

people who are

dead and people

who are alive.

There isn't sort of

like this in between.

It's not like

Christian coma

status, right?

Death or life.

What camp do you

find yourself in?

Are you a person who

doesn't know Jesus

Christ as Lord and

Savior, who hasn't

repented and asked

him for, asked him

for forgiveness and

confessed him as the

Lord of your life?

Man, there's a reason

you're hearing this

message because

as mean as it sounds

for me to say it, I

love you enough to

tell you the truth.

You're on your

way to hell.

Jesus said it.

The church ought

to always say it.

If you don't know

him as Lord and

Savior, that is

the destination.

And you don't know

when you're gonna go.

And you can plan a

million things and

you can try to get

all kinds of things

lined up and control

whatever you think

you can control a man.

There's a day coming,

scripture says, where

every man, woman,

child is gonna stand

before the throne

of God and give an

account of his life.

And all of us are

gonna be like,

well look at my

transgressions and

my, my trespasses

and my sins.

And we've got nothing

except that Jesus

steps in our place

and says He's mine.

He's confessed me

as Lord repented

of his sin and my

payment covers that.

He's been a maid alive

and there are

people who are alive

and this is a sad

group sometimes.

And here's why.

'cause these

alive people,

they listen to so much

crap from the enemy.

And they get so caught

up in what the world's

selling, that they

walk over and they

pop open a coffin and

they lay in there and

they sit and they feel

sorry for themselves

and they sulk about

their reality.

And I'm not saying

this world isn't hard.

It's hard.

Jesus said it's hard.

But guys, we've been

made alive through

Christ and there

is nothing this

world throws at us.

There is no

circumstance,

no situation.

There is nothing

that should be able

to rob God's people

of the joy of the

life, of the hope of

shining in the midst

of the darkness.

'cause we're alive.

You're in the midst

of eternity right now.

Don't do that stupid

thing where you

think, when I die,

I go to, you know,

no, no, you're

an eternal soul.

You're not going

to, you're not

gonna stop being an

eternal soul man.

You're on this

trajectory now.

Be alive and man,

don't get caught

up in all the

dumb distractions

of this life.

But instead, get

out there and

share some life.

Like, can you imagine?

Just, just take

two seconds.

Can you imagine a

whole bunch of God's

people who are alive

in Christ actually

believing the people

that they're hanging

out with are dead

and they're on

their way to die?

Like if you knew

somebody was in a line

standing there that

led to a gas chamber

to die, and you

knew they could come

stand in this line.

I mean, if it was that

simple, which one of

us is, is callous and

numb enough to stare

at that person and

be like, huh, glad

I'm in this line.

Sucker, right?

What a mess.

God's people, man,

they, we gotta have

a heart for the lost.

And we gotta have

a heart that says,

man, there are

people who are dying

and I am alive.

And while I'm alive,

I'm gonna do whatever

I can to try to share

hope and life and

truth and bring some

people from the world

of darkness and death

over here to know

Jesus and be alive.

Sorry man.

That's just the

ramblings of my

heart this morning.

Um, we have, we really

have only things

to be grateful for.

This is the truth,

don't get me wrong.

I had a lot of stuff.

I'm struggling with

tension, pressure,

weight, but I really

only have things

to be thankful for.

'cause I'm not dead.

I'm made alive through

Christ because of his

mercy and his grace.

And God calls me to

be somebody who passes

that out to some other

people around me.

So, hey, I know the

technology's not

gonna work, but, uh,

let's get the worship

team back up here.

I'm gonna close

this in prayer.

We're gonna sing,

uh, that last song,

old Rugged Cross, my

Salvation, whatever

the title of that is.

Sounds good.

Um,

I, I wanna say

this real quick.

I, I'm not an

altar call guy.

I, I've just kind

of come to this

reality in my life

and maybe shame on

me for it for sure.

I don't say that

proudly, but I've been

in churches so many

times in my life, my

whole life really, and

I've watched so many

of the same people

come up and get down

in front of the altar

and weep and mourn,

and then go out and

just do the exact

same things every

day, all the time.

In this cyclical

moment, I've

watched some people

come and pray and

be transformed.

So, like I said, shame

on me for not maybe

encouraging us to

pray more than we do.

Um,

I don't know, but

here's what I do know.

I do know that the

Holy Spirit has been

speaking this morning

and moving here with

us, and you know what

he's saying to you.

And maybe this morning

you're somebody who's

dead and I wanna

invite you, if you're

dead, to just sneak

up here and kneel

down at this altar

and pray and ask Jesus

to make you alive.

It's as simple as

saying, Jesus, please

forgive me for my sin.

And I recognize what

you've done for me

and I'm reaching

out for your mercy

for what I deserve.

And if it's okay,

I'd like to ask for a

little grace getting

what I don't deserve.

But if that's you

this morning, I

wanna invite you

while we sing to,

to come and kneel

up here and pray.

And maybe you're

somebody who's alive,

but you find yourself

saying, man, joy

in my salvation.

I don't even know

what that means.

My head's standing

with my face in the

corner, and I'm just

staring at darkness

all the time instead

of living in the

life that God gave

me to share and to

spread the message

of hope in life.

And maybe you need

to come and say,

Lord, forgive me and

do some work in my

heart to set me a

little bit on fire,

for hope and life to

the people around me.

I don't know what you

need to do, and you'll

get no condemnation

from me or anybody

else in this room.

But I'd like to

invite you to stand

as I pray, and we're

gonna sing this song

as a prayer to the

Lord of gratitude

and thanksgiving

and praise.

And if you need to

come and pray, we'll

invite you to do that.

Don't walk out this

place going back

through the motions

of how you do life,

whatever camp you

find yourself in,

Lord Jesus, thank

you for your word

and for your truth.

Thank you for

your mercy.

We deserve death

and destruction,

but you're rich in

mercy and you love

us, so you offer

us an opportunity.

To choose Jesus

the way, the truth,

and the life.

Thank you and

God, you've given

us crazy amazing

grace unmerited

favor things that

we didn't deserve.

We get to be

in your family.

We get to experience

eternal life.

Lord, forgive us for

not being people who

can't contain our joy

and help us to walk

in life with you.

I pray that you

would hear this

prayer from your

people as we sing.

And Lord, if there's

people here who need

to come and do some
