  1. Religion, there's a more

  2. important R word that Jesus

  3. offers us and that's relationship.

  4. So much is made of this idea of being

  5. religious, that we can check a bunch of

  6. boxes and somehow get more qualified,

  7. more connected, more impressive.

  8. But Jesus, he came when

  9. we were dead in our sin.

  10. When we.

  11. We're not impressive at all.

  12. And in fact, when we look in the

  13. mirror and think how impressive we are,

  14. we're probably just fooling ourselves,

  15. especially when we look at the heart.

  16. But Jesus came knowing all that,

  17. and he offered us relationship

  18. to be in relationship.

  19. No slaves to religion.

  20. Sons, daughters invited into his family

  21. to sit at the table, to love, like our dad

  22. loves to serve, like our dad serves, that

  23. his character would be reflected in us.

  24. Not because we're checking religious

  25. boxes, but because we've been

  26. transformed in relationship with Jesus.

  27. What an awesome picture.

  28. Love that.

  29. Hate that religion.

  30. Word.

  31. Sorry.

  32. It's kinda like a bad word in our house.

  33. Don't use the R word.

  34. Use that relationship word 'cause.

  35. See, at the end of the day, if

  36. religion is what drives you, that

  37. you can check some box and be okay.

  38. It's, it's gonna fail, right?

  39. It's not strong enough.

  40. Your duty, your obedience isn't

  41. strong enough without relationship.

  42. 'cause love is what drives it.

  43. Love drives relationship.

  44. When you want to quit, when

  45. you want to give up, when your

  46. marriage is hard and difficult.

  47. Relationship man anchored in love,

  48. that motivator is more powerful

  49. than anything in this life.

  50. You know why?

  51. 'cause God himself, he says, I am love.

  52. His character is love.

  53. And when we love what's happening to

  54. the endless reservoir of who our God is,

  55. sorry, just had to get

  56. that outta my system.

  57. Thanks Robin.

  58. Appreciate that.

  59. Here we go.

  60. Easter's just the beginning.

  61. It's just the launching pad,

  62. right from when we go into all

  63. the world and share the gospel.

  64. See, God's not dead.

  65. He's alive, and the Holy Spirit

  66. is at work and car crashes.

  67. He's work in hospital rooms.

  68. He's at work in marriage.

  69. He's at work at cubicles.

  70. He's work at desks at school.

  71. He's at work in the aisle

  72. of the grocery store.

  73. He's at work all around us and we're

  74. invited into mission and invited

  75. into impact for all eternity because

  76. our God is alive and he's at work.

  77. And sometimes we celebrate Easter and

  78. we're like, whew, that was the pinnacle.

  79. No, no, no.

  80. That ought to just be sort of a, a fun

  81. Sunday, remembering what it's about and

  82. energizing us to go out into the world

  83. and make disciples of all nations, right?

  84. We have received the good news.

  85. The great news, life from death,

  86. relationship, freedom from religion, but

  87. into relationship which is gonna drive

  88. us even harder and clearer and be more

  89. intense and all consuming because that

  90. relationship is gonna affect every part

  91. of our life and everything that we do.

  92. But it's this amazing news

  93. of life that we have, right?

  94. And God's given to us.

  95. Well, this morning I wanna take

  96. you over to second Timothy,

  97. chapter four, verse five.

  98. And I wanna camp out here a

  99. little bit together this morning.

  100. And it's interesting, um, Renee, you said

  101. some stuff about marriage and I was in

  102. the back thinking about this and I'll

  103. probably make some tie-ins to that too.

  104. But this, this isn't a message necessarily

  105. about marriage or even relationship.

  106. It's really a message about God's

  107. call to his people to engage

  108. and to be on mission with him.

  109. And I guess you could probably apply

  110. that to marriage that God has us in a

  111. mission field that's really important.

  112. Right inside our home and how we're

  113. leading and how we're engaging and how

  114. we're enduring and how we're speaking.

  115. Like it matters.

  116. It matters.

  117. Well, let's take a look at second

  118. Timothy chapter four, verse five.

  119. It's not complicated.

  120. You'll read, you'll read this and

  121. be like, okay, kind of makes sense.

  122. Straightforward.

  123. What are you gonna talk about?

  124. Good news.

  125. I'll be able to fill the space.

  126. Don't stress it.

  127. I got some stuff to say.

  128. Here we go.

  129. As for you, always be sober minded.

  130. Endure suffering.

  131. Do the work of an evangelist

  132. and fulfill your ministry.

  133. Now Paul is talking to Timothy,

  134. who is a leader in the church.

  135. And we do an awesome job in our

  136. brilliant American Christianity

  137. where we've learned so much that

  138. we're quick to relegate this to.

  139. Oh, these are instructions

  140. to a preacher shoot.

  141. Does not apply to me, Andy.

  142. Just turn and face the screen and

  143. talk to yourself this morning.

  144. 'cause the rest of us don't

  145. have to pay attention right now.

  146. Except that the principles that Paul

  147. calls Timothy to are the same principles.

  148. He calls all of the followers

  149. of Jesus to throughout the

  150. New Testament, the same stuff.

  151. Peter calls people to the same stuff,

  152. the disciples, and quite honestly the

  153. same stuff Jesus called people to.

  154. So before you chuck this into the exempt

  155. bucket, it's, it's not, this is a message

  156. for us, for those of us who are in this

  157. relationship with our Heavenly Father, who

  158. are engaged in trying to be his people.

  159. Shine the light, be the people

  160. at the car accidents and at the

  161. hospitals, right, and at the

  162. workplaces who are on mission for him.

  163. And there isn't any one of us exempt

  164. from that, just for the record.

  165. But I wanna pack this together just a

  166. little bit, see where we get to today.

  167. Always be sober minded.

  168. This phrase gets altered a little bit in

  169. some modern translations to say things

  170. like, keep your head in all situations.

  171. Keep a clear mind.

  172. Be watchful in all things,

  173. exercise, self-control.

  174. And these phrases, they're not wrong.

  175. I mean, they're, they're decent

  176. applications of the principle that

  177. here rooted in this core Greek word.

  178. But the Greek word here

  179. is really, really clear.

  180. It literally means sober

  181. and watch sober and watch.

  182. And we can unpack that a lot of

  183. different ways, but for me, when I

  184. see, be sober and watch, this is what I

  185. see, don't numb out and pay attention.

  186. That's really the call to God's people.

  187. And you guys know what I'm

  188. talking about, numbing out.

  189. You know what I'm talking about.

  190. When we look for ways to just sort of

  191. check out of our life and check out of

  192. moments and withdraw in our own flesh, we

  193. chase pleasure and we chase just escapism.

  194. And we're looking for ways to not have

  195. to deal and to get out from under.

  196. And we end up being people who are very

  197. quick to not be sober, but essentially

  198. to be drunkards of whether it's

  199. alcohol or substances, whether it's

  200. pornography, whether it's entertainment,

  201. whether it's vacations, whether it's

  202. anything and everything we can possibly

  203. do to try to escape our reality.

  204. And I think it's a ploy of the enemy

  205. that he wants us to just kind of

  206. numb out to not feel 'cause feeling.

  207. You know, if you feel you're gonna

  208. experience something that's not

  209. really cool, it's called pain, right?

  210. But if you don't feel pain,

  211. you can't feel joy, right?

  212. If you don't allow yourself to

  213. be engaged to where you could get

  214. hurt, you can't ever experience the

  215. exhilaration of amazing moments where

  216. God shows up and does cool things, and

  217. you get to feel some of that, right?

  218. We can't just feel the

  219. things we want to feel.

  220. We either feel and engage or we don't.

  221. And man, so many of us are quick

  222. to just disengage, to numb out.

  223. And we just don't want to feel,

  224. and we don't want to be present

  225. in the moments that God's got us.

  226. Right?

  227. And we're just zoned out,

  228. checked out, numbed out.

  229. Now, I hadn't really thought of it

  230. until Renee tried to hijack my sermon,

  231. but let me just be really honest.

  232. I could see a scenario in marriage where

  233. it might be tempting to check out, to

  234. zone out, to numb out to the person

  235. that you're doing life with, to just

  236. go through the grind of life and just

  237. become people who cohabitate in your

  238. crazy business life of trying to afford

  239. to live in Hamilton County and raise kids

  240. and not kill each other in the process.

  241. Right.

  242. I get it.

  243. It's tough, it's difficult.

  244. And sometimes we don't want to feel from

  245. the people's, you know, closest to us.

  246. Right.

  247. We want to just check out.

  248. Scripture is pretty clear.

  249. Sometimes we need to be sober minded,

  250. so that's not what it says, right?

  251. What does it say always?

  252. Now, that does not mean

  253. there's no rest or Sabbath.

  254. It does not mean there's no

  255. times where we get to catch

  256. our breath and do some things.

  257. But there's never a time

  258. where God says, you know what?

  259. Just numb out, check out, do whatever.

  260. It doesn't matter.

  261. God always has purpose in the rest.

  262. He wants to replenish.

  263. He wants to restore.

  264. He wants to reconnect.

  265. He wants to pour into us.

  266. We go find rest to just have an expression

  267. of our sensual pleasure to the nth degree.

  268. And God says that's a

  269. word called debauchery.

  270. That's dangerous.

  271. I wanna pour into you.

  272. He says, in fact, come unto me.

  273. All you who are weary and heavy laden,

  274. he doesn't say, go on to Disneyland.

  275. All you, I'm just kidding.

  276. I wanna go to Disneyland.

  277. I'm totally good with that.

  278. He does say, come away to the

  279. water, to the lake, just so you

  280. know, that's in there somewhere.

  281. But the reality is, is we fill in the

  282. blank of how we want to experience rest.

  283. But you know, the one who can really give

  284. us rest from our, from our labor and the

  285. intensity of weight that we carry in our

  286. soul, man, it's our heavenly father who

  287. says, come to me and I'll give you rest.

  288. But we try to find us somewhere else.

  289. We are a very adept generation and

  290. culture at checking out and numbing out

  291. and not feeling and avoiding all of it.

  292. And God calls us to be people who are

  293. not numbed out, who are clear, who are

  294. engaged, and who are paying attention.

  295. And it's not just here in Timothy, right?

  296. One Peter says this.

  297. Be alert and sober of sober mind.

  298. Why?

  299. Oh, I don't know.

  300. Because your enemy, the devil,

  301. prowls around like a lion seeking

  302. someone to devour, to destroy,

  303. to rip apart and annihilate.

  304. We're like, ah, nah.

  305. You mean the little tiny guy on

  306. the pitchfork on my shoulder?

  307. No, man.

  308. The devil is at work to bring

  309. destruction into your life.

  310. Laying snares.

  311. Do you know, like if you don't pay

  312. attention, you can walk right into a pit.

  313. You can walk right into a trap.

  314. You can walk right into a snare

  315. that the enemy's got for you.

  316. I mean, pay attention.

  317. And it's not because God like wants you

  318. to not chill out and do your own thing.

  319. He cares about you.

  320. He's like, Hey, this path right

  321. here leads to death, destruction.

  322. Don't take it right?

  323. Pay attention.

  324. Scripture says over in one Thessalonians.

  325. So then let us not sleep, but keep awake.

  326. Right?

  327. Some of you who have small children

  328. understand that you're being very

  329. biblical all night long, right?

  330. When your kid won't go to sleep,

  331. you're like, Hey, this should be

  332. my life first, right here, right?

  333. If you got a, if you got a baby

  334. in a crib in your house, this

  335. is what you're living, right?

  336. So you'd be like, don't

  337. talk to me, preacher.

  338. I got this.

  339. I ain't, I ain't slept in months.

  340. So totally appreciate that.

  341. Good work by you guys.

  342. This isn't about don't

  343. sleep, don't get rest.

  344. Don't be healthy.

  345. This is about checking out, not

  346. caring, being asleep, man, when

  347. it matters the most, right?

  348. Be awake, be sober.

  349. Even Jesus is like, Hey man, keep watch.

  350. 'cause you don't even

  351. know when I'm coming.

  352. Keep watch.

  353. Pay attention your life.

  354. Man's gonna be demanded of you at

  355. some point in time and you don't even

  356. know when that is, and you're gonna

  357. be zoned out, numbed out, checked out.

  358. Don't miss it.

  359. This idea of being sober,

  360. watchful, paying attention.

  361. You can't be effective for

  362. what God wants you to do.

  363. You can't be effective in your marriages.

  364. You can't maintain healthy

  365. anything if you're not engaged.

  366. And we're quick to go

  367. the opposite direction.

  368. Endure suffering.

  369. This is an all time favorite.

  370. Um, I, I think I, I like, I've had

  371. this phrase this week with a student.

  372. We were talking and, and

  373. I made this statement.

  374. I think it's legit.

  375. You guys could tell me if you

  376. don't like it, but following Jesus

  377. is simple, but it's not easy.

  378. See, one of the lies in our culture

  379. is that once we come to Jesus, we

  380. get to hold a lollipop and a puppy

  381. dog and ride a rainbow and run and

  382. frolic, and it's gonna be great.

  383. And we won't have hard things or difficult

  384. things or challenges or adversity

  385. because following Jesus is fun and great.

  386. It's gonna be the most

  387. amazing time of your life.

  388. And then people come to faith in Jesus

  389. Christ and say, yeah, I want that.

  390. And then things get hard, right?

  391. Well, listen, following

  392. Jesus is not complicated.

  393. We love to overcomplicate things.

  394. Let's throw in tons of big doctrinal

  395. and theological terms to try to sound,

  396. articulate and unpack every angle.

  397. But listen, it's so simple.

  398. Sin equals death.

  399. Following Jesus equals life.

  400. It's just so simple.

  401. Sin living it, it follow

  402. it to his destination.

  403. Destruction.

  404. Try to follow Jesus in this

  405. relationship leads to life.

  406. We don't need to

  407. overcomplicate everything.

  408. It's not complicated, but it is not easy.

  409. It is difficult.

  410. In fact, we have this

  411. awesome promise, right?

  412. As we think about enduring suffering.

  413. Sorry, I'm gonna go to the Greek first.

  414. Josiah, what's that word saying?

  415. Kaha.

  416. Say it fast.

  417. Perfect.

  418. Alright.

  419. Just try to see if I got my money's

  420. worth on this graduation yesterday.

  421. Alright.

  422. Endure suffering.

  423. Endure affliction.

  424. Suffer trouble.

  425. This really is a picture

  426. of anticipating resistance.

  427. Expect it.

  428. Can I ask you a dumb question?

  429. How much do you go through

  430. your day with the mindset?

  431. You know, I bet you the devil's

  432. kind of gunning for me today.

  433. I'll bet you I'm gonna

  434. experience some resistance.

  435. You're the last thing the devil

  436. wants you to think about as you

  437. walk through your day, that he's

  438. gonna show up and try to trap you in

  439. something or throw something at you.

  440. He wants you to just be oblivious, right?

  441. The last thing he wants you to

  442. do is think, Hey, you better be

  443. prepared 'cause I'm prowling around

  444. like a lion coming after you.

  445. He doesn't want you to think like that.

  446. Why?

  447. Because if you anticipated

  448. it, you'd be what?

  449. Ready for it.

  450. You'd be prepared.

  451. Right?

  452. I was thinking about this like on a,

  453. on a trip, like if you go on a long

  454. trip, you prepare, you take what you

  455. need, you have enough stuff to get to

  456. the end of your destination, right?

  457. But we just randomly go through day and

  458. life events with no, no anticipation of

  459. resistance or expecting that it's gonna

  460. be hard or difficult or challenging.

  461. And then it shows up and we're like, what?

  462. What?

  463. Oh my gosh, what do I do?

  464. And then we experience something

  465. hard and we're like, whoa.

  466. Hard, difficult.

  467. Jesus isn't in that.

  468. Oh, if it's hard, I must,

  469. I must have misunderstood.

  470. Jesus wanted me to go talk

  471. to my neighbor, so I did.

  472. And now my neighbor threw

  473. something at me and hates me.

  474. Well, obviously that was the

  475. devil trying to get me to talk

  476. to my neighbor about Jesus.

  477. That's not how that works, right?

  478. We think hard things are

  479. evidence that God's not in it.

  480. But listen, I think biblically,

  481. if it's hard, it's probably more

  482. of an indicator that God is in it.

  483. If it's easy.

  484. It might be that big, wide, easy

  485. road that Jesus said leads to death.

  486. Yeah, but the narrow road that

  487. leads to life is hard and difficult.

  488. And few find it.

  489. Let me encourage your heart

  490. with this promise from Jesus.

  491. He said, in this world,

  492. you will have trouble.

  493. Just take a moment and

  494. be like, thank you Lord.

  495. It's so encouraging to have this promise.

  496. This is a pro.

  497. I'm gonna get this tattooed right here.

  498. Gonna have trouble, bro.

  499. Right?

  500. That would be a great one, right?

  501. We love Jesus' promises.

  502. We love them.

  503. Except this one.

  504. This one is the, this is like, you

  505. know the The Jesus promise we leave.

  506. This is David out in the field.

  507. We're like, no, these are all my sons.

  508. These are all the promises of God.

  509. I don't got no other ones.

  510. What about that one out there?

  511. Nah, nah, not that one.

  512. Don't look, don't look over there.

  513. Right?

  514. The truth is, this is a promise.

  515. It's a promise.

  516. It's not gonna be easy.

  517. It's gonna be difficult.

  518. Anticipate resistance, right?

  519. Endure suffering in hard things.

  520. But this promise is not just

  521. good luck sucker, right?

  522. It says, but take heart.

  523. Be encouraged, because I've

  524. already overcome the world.

  525. The adversary that you're facing

  526. took care of that man already

  527. took care of that, right?

  528. Have you heard the new Mercy

  529. me song about, oh, death.

  530. There's a great lyric in there, right?

  531. There's something about like, I'm

  532. gonna dance on the dance on your

  533. grave with the one who buried you.

  534. It's a pretty good picture, right?

  535. Of like, we don't have an enemy

  536. that has any power over us

  537. who has any victory over us.

  538. Unless, of course, we just hand

  539. him the keys and stand back

  540. and let 'em take charge, right?

  541. We're gonna have hard things,

  542. we're gonna have difficult things.

  543. It's all over.

  544. Scripture blesses the man who

  545. remains steadfast under trial,

  546. right from when he stood the test.

  547. He'll receive the crown of life, which

  548. God has promised to those who love him.

  549. Corinthians says, therefore, my beloved

  550. brothers be steadfast, immovable, always

  551. abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing

  552. that what you're doing isn't in vain.

  553. It's not pointless.

  554. Right?

  555. And, uh, Romans is real encouraging.

  556. Not only that, but we

  557. rejoice in sufferings.

  558. That's, that's, that's nuts, right?

  559. Like, hoo, hard stuff coming, let's go.

  560. Nobody comes home and says,

  561. Hey honey, guess what?

  562. Had a terrible day.

  563. I can't wait to tell you about it.

  564. Yes, God is doing some stuff.

  565. How crazy would that be if you started

  566. Marriage de Detox coming back from work

  567. every evening and saying, terrible day.

  568. Oh, God's at work.

  569. This is exciting, right?

  570. I don't know anyone who does that.

  571. I don't know anyone who does that.

  572. What if we're the first, right?

  573. We're the first church that

  574. does a lot of dumb stuff.

  575. Why don't we do that?

  576. Right?

  577. Let's try it.

  578. See what happens.

  579. Just be the people who

  580. are like, hard, difficult.

  581. Yes.

  582. And listen, can I just

  583. say this real quick?

  584. All of you spouses in here.

  585. I want to give you permission

  586. for this next week.

  587. Okay?

  588. We got men's retreat coming up.

  589. Obviously the enemy does not like that.

  590. We got like 40 guys going

  591. on this awesome adventure.

  592. It's gonna be super cool what God's doing.

  593. I'm so excited.

  594. The Women's Retreat in

  595. another couple weeks.

  596. So many cool things God's at work doing.

  597. Promise you, the devil is not

  598. excited, he's not thrilled.

  599. And you're probably gonna experience

  600. some things this week to try to get you

  601. not to go to bail, to quit all of it.

  602. Your marriage is gonna feel

  603. like it can't ever last.

  604. Your kids are gonna be like, ha

  605. ha, we went to the devil's side.

  606. Yeah, let's go.

  607. Whatever it looks like it's gonna

  608. happen probably, but I want to

  609. give permission to spouses this

  610. week leading up to Men retreat.

  611. And in two weeks for the

  612. women's tree, try this.

  613. When your spouse says,

  614. I had a horrible day.

  615. Or when your spouse says something

  616. negative about what's going on,

  617. this is the word, okay, turn to

  618. your spouse and say, just this.

  619. Yes, yes.

  620. A, it's gonna increase a lot

  621. of marriage counseling for me,

  622. which is cool, but then also.

  623. I just want to see if we can mess with

  624. the enemy who loves to bring deception.

  625. How about we flip that script, right?

  626. And we're like, Hey, good news man.

  627. God's at work.

  628. Just try it.

  629. Just try it.

  630. Let me know.

  631. I'll be busy fighting with my own wife.

  632. You guys just let me know.

  633. Alright?

  634. We rejoice in sufferings.

  635. Why do we rejoice and suffer?

  636. Well, because we know.

  637. What do we know?

  638. That suffering produces endurance.

  639. That the more we walk through

  640. it, the stronger we get.

  641. Right?

  642. And that endurance produces

  643. godly character in us to be able

  644. to be strong and to stand and

  645. to not crumble and fall apart.

  646. And that character produces hope in us.

  647. A hope that man, this isn't the end.

  648. 'cause we know the truth and we're

  649. able to endure even the crazy

  650. things that this world throws at us.

  651. Right.

  652. You know, I love this verse here.

  653. Uh, John 10 10, Jesus says, the thief,

  654. he's only showing up to bring destruction.

  655. He wants to kill, destroy.

  656. But for me, I've come that you may

  657. have life and have it to the full.

  658. It's where we get this idea

  659. of abundant life, right?

  660. Life that is full and

  661. full can be overwhelming.

  662. But check this out.

  663. The opposite of a full and abundant

  664. life is an empty life, A hollow life,

  665. a life that's void of meaning, right?

  666. Empty, huge voids.

  667. And we're longing for meaning.

  668. But the truth is, it's only

  669. through Jesus that we get to

  670. experience meaning full life, right?

  671. That's a picture of what God offers us.

  672. But that's not a life

  673. of ease and simplicity.

  674. It's, it's a life of purpose and meaning.

  675. But usually a life like that, you

  676. gotta endure some stuff, right?

  677. So we recognize we can endure suffering

  678. and hardships and difficulties because.

  679. Because there's meaning and purpose

  680. even to the hard things we walk through.

  681. You're watching people suffer with

  682. illness, watching people walk through

  683. all kinds of hard things in this life.

  684. It's difficult for us to watch, but

  685. let me tell you, there is nothing

  686. like watching somebody walk through

  687. the valley of the shadow of death and

  688. praising God in the midst of it and

  689. helping people understand that this is

  690. not the end, and this does not destroy

  691. my spirit, but instead, man, what

  692. really matters is coming to the surface.

  693. That is a perspective our

  694. world cannot even comprehend.

  695. When you lose the ability to look

  696. good and grow hair, when you lose the

  697. ability to buy stuff and have stuff,

  698. when you lose the ability to go here and

  699. there, when you lose those abilities,

  700. oh my gosh, it's, it's sadness and

  701. desperation and discouragement and

  702. hopelessness, but for those whose hope

  703. is anchored in Christ, it ought to

  704. be like, oh, I'm closer to real hope.

  705. I'm moving the direction towards eternity.

  706. Less here, more there.

  707. That's not a bad place to be at all,

  708. and it should look a lot different

  709. than how the world embraces the hard

  710. things and the difficult things.

  711. When we endure suffering, we expect it.

  712. We anticipate it, and we don't

  713. shy away from it and run from.

  714. Instead, we give God

  715. glory in the midst of it.

  716. Man, that is a bright shining light.

  717. And speaking of a bright,

  718. shining light, we're supposed

  719. to do the work of an evangelist.

  720. You go, Josiah, one more Cha ching.

  721. Did you this?

  722. Good job, Noah.

  723. Do you get it?

  724. Yep.

  725. Good job.

  726. Okay, perfect.

  727. Good, good clarification.

  728. An evangelist.

  729. Well, you're like, man,

  730. I'm not an evangelist.

  731. This doesn't count, man.

  732. I don't have that spiritual gift.

  733. No, no, no.

  734. Do the work of an evangelist.

  735. What is an evangelist?

  736. Evangelist is a bringer of good tings.

  737. That's the, that's the phrase.

  738. Good news, right?

  739. Do you know any good news?

  740. Have you heard any good news?

  741. Are you aware of any good news?

  742. We all know some good news.

  743. That Jesus bought us back from death

  744. gives us opportunity for life, right?

  745. That's some great news.

  746. And so God's called us to be people

  747. who are bringers of good news.

  748. Can I just challenge you with this one

  749. idea, this one thought to insert into

  750. your life, tell people about Jesus.

  751. Just tell people about Jesus.

  752. And if you're like, well, I'm not really

  753. sure how or what that means, or kind of

  754. how to contextualize that, lemme simplify.

  755. Talk about Jesus.

  756. Did you talk about the

  757. NFL draft this week?

  758. Did you talk about Formula One?

  759. Race cars?

  760. Did you talk about your job?

  761. Did you talk about lunch?

  762. I mean, if you can talk about what Long

  763. John Silvers is running as a special, you

  764. could probably talk about Jesus, right?

  765. Come on, talk about Jesus.

  766. We're scared to, we don't want

  767. to, the enemy doesn't want

  768. us to just talk about Jesus.

  769. You know the worst thing

  770. that's gonna happen?

  771. You're gonna tell somebody the

  772. name that is above every name.

  773. A name that one day they'll have to answer

  774. to and stand before and bow the knee to.

  775. You're gonna tell 'em that

  776. and they may hate you.

  777. Well, man, good job.

  778. At least letting 'em know the name

  779. so they know who to address when

  780. they're standing in eternity, right?

  781. I mean, come on.

  782. There's no lose in this unless, of course,

  783. our hope, our joy, everything's tied

  784. to what we have in this life and our

  785. own experiences and our own pleasure,

  786. our own possessions and all that stuff.

  787. You can lose some of that stuff.

  788. People lose it all over

  789. the world all the time.

  790. But see, all that stuff's temporary.

  791. It doesn't matter unless you're

  792. like, I can't endure hardship.

  793. I can't endure suffering,

  794. so I can't talk about Jesus.

  795. Okay, well then just say,

  796. I can't obey God's word.

  797. That's just easier and cleaner

  798. and they don't have to pay

  799. attention to any of it, right?

  800. Can't do this.

  801. God, sorry, I'm out.

  802. God has called us to be people

  803. who spread the word, right?

  804. We're supposed to be ambassadors

  805. and messengers and lights in the

  806. midst of the darkness, and we so

  807. want to just stay silent, young.

  808. Who else wants you to be silent?

  809. The devil wants you to be silent.

  810. We love to be like, no, the Holy

  811. Spirit didn't want me to speak there.

  812. Man, I have such a hard time with that.

  813. I'll bet you the Holy Spirit

  814. can work more with you.

  815. Oops.

  816. Talking about Jesus than you.

  817. Oops.

  818. Not talking about Jesus.

  819. Right.

  820. He's at work.

  821. He's, he's engaged.

  822. He's probably got all these people

  823. already to hear something you're

  824. supposed to say and you're like,

  825. Jesus, me loves, oh, that was so bad.

  826. God can work with that.

  827. Right?

  828. Lemme get a little follow up.

  829. What's that now?

  830. Oh, Jesus loves me.

  831. That's what I meant to say.

  832. Oh, okay.

  833. Right.

  834. God can work with that.

  835. You know what?

  836. He has a real hard time working with

  837. silence as though your actions are

  838. gonna be all anybody ever needs to see,

  839. to know everything about Jesus that's

  840. in your heart that you could share.

  841. I'm not saying that scripture says,

  842. you know where it says, make sure

  843. that you know people see your life

  844. right and, and it points 'em to Jesus.

  845. That's great.

  846. And it should be.

  847. But that's the only verse we memorize

  848. about evangelism and sharing our

  849. faith is just do the right stuff in

  850. front of people and see if it works.

  851. I think that's a really crappy

  852. interpretation of go and make disciples.

  853. Tell people the good news, right?

  854. Listen, Jesus wasn't ashamed of us.

  855. We shouldn't be ashamed of him.

  856. We gotta tell people about Jesus.

  857. Do the work of an evangelist.

  858. I'm not an evangelist.

  859. I get it.

  860. Few of us are talk about

  861. Jesus, just talk about him.

  862. See what God does in that space.

  863. And then ultimately this picture

  864. of, Hey, wait, can, well, nevermind.

  865. I'll say that.

  866. Fulfill your ministry.

  867. It means to carry out your duty.

  868. I was sitting on my couch this week

  869. kind of meditating on these scriptures.

  870. I. Right.

  871. And I was just sitting there, a little

  872. coffee table in our living room that's

  873. trashed by all the college kids usually.

  874. So it was like probably a Monday morning

  875. and I was just looking around and

  876. reading and talking to the Lord when

  877. nobody else is awake, which is usually

  878. healthy all the way around for all of us.

  879. Um, I was thinking about this

  880. question, why does God need a sober

  881. minded, engaged, prepared to and do?

  882. We're ready to speak.

  883. Why does God need us?

  884. Why does he need us like that?

  885. Why, why can't he just like

  886. fill our mouth with something?

  887. Or why can't we just do life as

  888. we want to and see what happens?

  889. Why?

  890. Well, because we're strategically

  891. positioned for eternal impact.

  892. He has got you where he's got you

  893. for eternal impact and purpose.

  894. And this came to me as I was sitting

  895. on my couch reading, talking to the

  896. Lord and I looked, and there on our

  897. coffee table was this chessboard.

  898. Not to be honest, I'm not

  899. the biggest detail guy.

  900. He might've been there for years.

  901. I'm just kidding.

  902. It wasn't there for years.

  903. I know it wasn't there for years.

  904. 'cause I asked Jamie about it.

  905. And my first question was,

  906. has that been there for years?

  907. So it wasn't their first year, right?

  908. But I'm sitting there and all of

  909. a sudden I see the chess board

  910. and I'm like, huh, chess board.

  911. Well, it turns out some kids came over,

  912. hung out with Jamie, played, had some fun,

  913. got ice cream, whatever Jamie does, you

  914. know, when I'm trying to be responsible.

  915. And she's on roller skates

  916. goofing off her kids.

  917. But they, they got out this chess

  918. board and they set it up and

  919. they didn't play it or anything.

  920. They just thought it looked cool and

  921. they left and then just sat there.

  922. 'cause that's what we do at our house.

  923. Uh, so it was just sitting there.

  924. But see, here's the thing, man.

  925. God, well, our step are playing.

  926. I'd like to say checkers, maybe

  927. tic-tac toe, probably tiddlywinks, or

  928. we just have our finger up our nose.

  929. God is playing chess

  930. and not just any chess.

  931. He's playing eternal chess.

  932. He is moving pieces on a chess board and

  933. he is positioning people in relationships

  934. and in moments and in crazy car accidents

  935. to be able to be his mouthpiece.

  936. To speak and to tell people

  937. about Jesus, to talk to.

  938. Just be a light in those moments, right?

  939. And if we're not sober minded,

  940. if we're not, if we're totally

  941. numbed out, disengaged and we're

  942. not paying attention, we miss it.

  943. Right?

  944. And if we're not willing to go through

  945. hard things with perspective, we miss it.

  946. And if we're not gonna

  947. open our mouth, we miss it.

  948. But God has positioned us and

  949. he has orchestrated events like

  950. we forget this all the time.

  951. God has been working through the

  952. power of the Holy Spirit on the person

  953. that you're interacting with, right?

  954. You didn't go in solo behind enemy

  955. lines, dropped in covert, and

  956. God's like, save the world, buddy.

  957. You're on your own, right?

  958. Heck no.

  959. He's been at work in that person's life,

  960. probably laying all the groundwork through

  961. all these different angles to give you

  962. opportunity to speak life in that moment.

  963. And you got a choice to make.

  964. What are you gonna do?

  965. Do you even see it?

  966. Do you even see it?

  967. Are you sober minded?

  968. Are you paying attention?

  969. Or are you just numbed

  970. out and checked out?

  971. Are you so consumed with not having

  972. to face hardships and difficulties,

  973. that as soon as something tough shows

  974. up, you're like, oh man, and you go

  975. down this whole spiral of negativity

  976. instead of gaining some perspective

  977. that maybe God has some purpose in it.

  978. What words are on your lips ready

  979. to come out in those moments?

  980. Some words of blessing or cursing,

  981. but you're not gonna have both, right?

  982. What does God want you to

  983. say about him in that space?

  984. And when you do those things, you

  985. end up fulfilling your ministry,

  986. what God has called you to and

  987. placed you in in this moment.

  988. Not some big, grandiose end of life

  989. adventure that defines you, but maybe

  990. just your ministry today, in this moment.

  991. Can I throw this at you?

  992. In a marriage setting, just real

  993. fast, disengaged, not paying

  994. attention, totally numbed out.

  995. Every time something goes hard,

  996. it goes difficult and it's hard.

  997. You turn on each other, never talking

  998. about Jesus and perspective on eternity,

  999. just talking about your circumstances

1000. and your finances and your mess.

  1001. You're never gonna fulfill

1002. your ministry as a husband.

  1003. You're never gonna fulfill

1004. your ministry as a wife.

1005. You're never gonna fulfill your

1006. ministry as a son or daughter.

1007. God has called us to ministry, to

1008. each other, to this world around us.

1009. And we've gotta be people who lock in,

1010. who are engaged, who are prepared, and

1011. anticipate resistance, and who have the

1012. words of Jesus on our lips ready to go.

1013. And man, if we live in

1014. that space, we'll look out.

1015. 'cause that is an impact that's

1016. gonna last for all eternity.

1017. And heaven's gonna be crowded in a

1018. mess 'cause they're not gonna have

1019. enough tickets and people are gonna

1020. be shoving around trying to get in the

1021. gates because just loved too well and

1022. we're too on it as followers of Jesus.

1023. That'd be a real fun mess to make.

  1024. Ever think about.

1025. This is, this is in my mind

  1026. where I'm like, how could I

1027. screw up the line in heaven?

1028. Make it complicated for Jesus, right?

  1029. That's so messed up.

  1030. Lord Jesus, thank you

1031. for putting up with me.

1032. Thank you for your word.

1033. Lord, thank you for Easter and

1034. the celebration that we have of

1035. life and hope and all the, the

1036. amazing things from last week.

1037. But Lord, let that light of fire in us to

1038. to be engaged and paying attention, to be

1039. prepared, to endure hard things, to have

1040. a whole lot to say about somebody that

1041. we claim to be in a relationship with.

  1042. That's the most important

  1043. relationship we have.

  1044. Lord.

1045. Let us be people who step up to

1046. the moment and fulfill the moment.

  1047. Whether that's in a crazy unforeseen

1048. accident or whether that's in the everyday

1049. grind of doing dishes at our house with

1050. our family and everything in between.

1051. Use us Lord to change all eternity.

1052. Let us join you where you're at work

1053. 'cause you're at work everywhere.

1054. Thank you for your love for us.

1055. Help us to live out this passage,

1056. this call, and be with us.

  1057. And encourage us.

1058. And strengthen us as we do.

1059. Ask all this in the

  1060. powerful name of Jesus.

  1061. Amen.

  1062. Amen.

1063. Hey, speaking of ministry and fulfilling

1064. your ministry, Jackie Allen is gonna sneak

1065. up here and take a mic and take control.

  1066. You can hold it.

  1067. All righty.

1068. Um, I'm going to invite anyone,

1069. anyone, everyone who is involved in

1070. our second care community to come

1071. up stage right now, including Maria.

1072. Um, a couple of our people are

1073. next door, Jamie and Julie.

1074. And I think Abby is enjoying

1075. the Caribbean is what I heard.

1076. So she's missing out this

  1077. morning, that mission trip.

1078. Uh, yeah, that's something like that.

1079. Um, so, uh, I wanted to share real fast.

1080. So we did this a couple weeks ago for

1081. our other care community, but um, if

1082. you weren't here, um, basically Maria

1083. and Abby and I help lead our foster

1084. care and adoptive ministry here.

1085. And we, um, have recently had the

1086. opportunity to launch two local care

1087. communities, which means that there's

1088. a couple foster and adoptive families

1089. in our community that are not part

1090. of our church that we felt led to

1091. reach out and start serving them.

1092. Um, so I wanted to share a couple verses

1093. real fast that kind of pertains to this.

1094. Andy, I love that you, uh, just went

1095. on that rant at the beginning about

1096. religion, because I'm gonna read James

1097. 1 27 that says religion that our God and

1098. Father accepts is pure and faultless is

1099. this to look after orphans and widows

1100. in their distress and to keep oneself

1101. from being polluted by the world.

1102. So I think that still goes in hand, in

1103. hand with what Andy was saying, but that.

1104. The work that we're doing is because of

1105. our relationship with God, not because

1106. we're trying to get to God, but because

1107. it's the ministry that we are fulfilling.

1108. Um, and then Psalms 68, verses

1109. five and six says, God is a father

1110. to the fatherless, a defender of

1111. widows as God and his holy dwelling.

1112. God sets the lonely and families he lean,

1113. leads forth the prisoners with singing.

1114. So, um, it was really important to

1115. me that, number one, I appreciate and

1116. acknowledge our volunteers who are being

1117. such an awesome part of this ministry,

1118. that this is a week to week thing, that

1119. every week we are taking meals, that we

1120. are getting updates on our families, that

1121. we are supporting and praying for them.

1122. Um, and also that we take some

1123. time to pray for you guys and

1124. commission you in this ministry.

1125. So I'm just gonna have Andy, uh, lead

1126. us in some prayer this morning for that.

  1127. Let's do that.

1128. Would you join me as we

  1129. pray over this group?

  1130. You guys met?

  1131. Just touch each other.

1132. Then we'll do like this telephone prayer.

  1133. There we go.

  1134. We got it.

  1135. All right.

  1136. All right.

1137. Well, join me in praying

1138. over this team as their.

1139. This is something we've never done before.

1140. Trying to reach a family that's unchurched

1141. with some crazy cool foster care, love.

  1142. Super awesome.

1143. It kind of ties into some stuff we

1144. just talked about fairly recently.

1145. Okay, father, thank you so much

1146. for these men and women in their

1147. faithfulness and their heart to love.

1148. Lord, I pray that you would use them, help

1149. them to be able to be locked in and seeing

1150. what's going on and engaged well and

1151. the moments you give them to, to serve.

1152. I pray, Lord, that every drop of

1153. sweat, every act of love would be

1154. received, and Lord, that it would

1155. change the perspective and the heart

1156. of the family that's receiving it.

1157. Lord, I pray that you give them

1158. strength and energy and just

1159. tremendous favor as they work.

1160. And Lord, that you would use their acts

1161. of love of even a cup of cold water

1162. given in your name, to be something that

1163. transforms all eternity for this family.

1164. Bless them and use them.

1165. I pray, and Lord, for all

1166. of us, use us in the care

1167. communities that you've got us in.

1168. Whether official or unofficial or

1169. yet to be determined, help us to be

1170. people who follow this example and,

1171. and love well, our neighbor as ourself.

1172. In Jesus' name we pray.

  1173. Amen.

1174. Hey, speaking of uh, care communities that

1175. you may or not get to be a part of, you

1176. didn't get invited on the platform and

1177. I'm sorry for that, but Dax and Jackie are

1178. gonna tell you about some other ways you

1179. might plug in to also experience some fun.

  1180. You go,

1181. all right, ba bam, tonight,

  1182. 6:00 PM Yeah, that's right.

1183. And then College H, small group.

1184. They're gonna have some fun

1185. at Morse Park and Beach.

  1186. So, woo.

  1187. Wish I was there.

1188. So then this Wednesday night, we

  1189. normally have men's group, but it's

1190. the fifth Wednesday, so we're not,

1191. but also we're not gonna be having

1192. it because we got men's retreat.

  1193. Yay.

1194. Uh, so we're technically full.

1195. But if you've been thinking that you

1196. really want to go and you've been

1197. on the fence about it, we can maybe

1198. still sit in one or two people.

  1199. So come see me.

  1200. Don't go see Andy.

  1201. Come see me.

  1202. If you're interested in

1203. that, come talk to me.

  1204. Okay?

1205. But also while the men are doing

  1206. cool things, women's Retreat.

  1207. Woo woo.

1208. Couple more weekends, girls, if you have

1209. not signed up yet, here's your link.

1210. Give everybody a second to get

1211. their com, get their phones

1212. out, make sure you sign up.

1213. Um, there is a $50 deposit and

  1214. then it's $175 for a full weekend.

  1215. It's so relaxing.

  1216. It's fun, it's joyful.

1217. It's time for sisters to encourage each

1218. other and pray for each other and cry

1219. together and love each other and have fun.

  1220. So it's great.

1221. So please come if you're

1222. available, it's gonna be great.

1223. And speaking of retreat for you also

1224. have Youth Retreat coming up in drum.

  1225. Yes.

  1226. Super excited.

  1227. I know what you're thinking.

1228. Well, where's the QR code for that?

  1229. Uh.

1230. Josh has, yeah, Josh has the QR code.

1231. Go go up to Josh and say,

1232. Hey, I need that QR code.

  1233. So yeah.

1234. And then we also have VBS, uh,

1235. coming up in the summer and

1236. that's gonna be super exciting.

  1237. Uh, there's a q Yeah.

  1238. Woo.

1239. Uh, so there is a QR code for registering

1240. your child to be part of VBS, and

1241. then there's a separate QR code, and

1242. that is for if you want to volunteer.

1243. Um, it's always great to have all

1244. hands on deck and you can, we need

1245. to get your shirt size and, and

1246. everything for your shirts and it's

1247. gonna be super cool to have Awesome.

  1248. Um, and awesome themed.

  1249. Nights, right?

1250. We get to be nights.

1251. So that's gonna be really fun, alright?

1252. And trust me, you wanna volunteer

1253. at VBS because you have never

1254. had so much fun in your life.

1255. So you wanna be there.

  1256. All righty.

1257. So speaking of kids stuff,

1258. we are going, guys so excited

  1259. that it's almost summertime.

  1260. It's crazy they're

  1261. stepping into this season.

1262. So this is gonna be our new, uh, kids

1263. summer program, passport through summer.

1264. And we are excited about our next

1265. new adventure and we need your help.

1266. So we are looking to add some

  1267. volunteers to our already

1268. awesome existing team of people.

1269. Um, so we would just love your help

  1270. even if you're like, I don't really

1271. know that many Bible verses, or I

1272. don't really have that much to offer.

1273. If you are a grownup and you can

1274. hang out and play with kids, we love

1275. you and we would love you to come.

1276. Um, so we've got nursery, we've got

  1277. Sunday school, we've got pre-teens,

1278. we've got lots of opportunities.

1279. So, uh, please scan that QR code or

1280. come and chat with any of us on staff.

1281. We'd love to plug you in.

  1282. Okay, awesome.

1283. Um, also another fun thing

  1284. for kids this summer.

1285. So Debbie Bush, our wonderful lady in

1286. the back right there, um, she is gonna be

1287. leading this really awesome summer study.

1288. I got Petra signed up for it.

1289. It's gonna be super great.

1290. Um, it is from June 9th to August 15th.

1291. If your child is five through 18 years

1292. of age, this is just like a really

1293. awesome way for them to get together

1294. and have fun in the summer, keep their

1295. brains occupied, and mainly to learn more

1296. about God and learn about the Bible and

1297. memorize some verses and have some fun.

1298. So, uh, if you have questions, ask Debbie.

1299. Otherwise, registration is now open.

1300. So click on that link and

1301. that is for ages five to 18.

  1302. Now, if you're over 18, you're

1303. like, I wanna memorize Bible verses.

  1304. You know what?

  1305. Memorize Bible verses.

  1306. Find Noah Blake.

1307. He wants to hear him.

  1308. Tell him you're no.

  1309. Yeah,

1310. so we had our clothing

  1311. giveaway this weekend.

1312. I just want to say a huge, huge thank

1313. you to all the people who came on

1314. Saturday and Wednesday, Thursday, Friday,

1315. the days before setting up in here.

  1316. We had,

1317. we had like the biggest clothing giveaway

1318. that I've seen since I've been here.

1319. And I was overwhelmed, like, oh my

1320. gosh, we're gonna have so much stuff.

1321. And we took out most of it.

  1322. Uh, it was phenomenal.

1323. So thank you for everyone and thank

1324. you for everyone who, who, uh, gave

1325. us stuff to give away to people.

1326. 'cause there's so many people

1327. that, that was a huge blessing too.

1328. Uh, it was just so great to see

1329. all these kids excited and playing

1330. with these toys and parents taking

1331. home trash bags of clothes that

1332. they were desperately in need for.

1333. So, and filling up their cars and

1334. shoving stuff in their cars and slamming

1335. the door to make sure it all fit in.

  1336. So, super.

  1337. Thank you church.

  1338. That's awesome.

1339. And we're so glad for all you do.

1340. And, and so speaking of that.

1341. All of these things, all these events

1342. that we're talking about, these are

1343. all things that we get to be part of

1344. this chess game that God has us in.

  1345. Right?

1346. All of these are strategy,

  1347. they're, they're strategic.

1348. So it's important as we look through

  1349. Men's Retreat, women's retreat, youth

1350. Retreat, uh, all these different

1351. ministries that our church is involved

1352. in, and you're ever on the fence

1353. of like, I should be doing that.

1354. Yeah, you should because this is strategy.

1355. This is us playing part of the game that

1356. God has us in and not stepping aside.

1357. So as we continue on our summer,

1358. uh, our spring into ministry, I want

1359. you guys remember, all of us are

1360. doing the work of an evangelist.

  1361. I don't care whether you're on staff

1362. or this is your first time here.

  1363. That's what God has

1364. called all of us to do.

1365. So please keep that in mind as

1366. you go out throughout your week.

  1367. Go out and blessing.

  1368. You're dismissed.

  1369. Amen.
