Race-Day Reflections on a Faith-Fueled Life | May 25, 2025

All right.

It is.

Race day sounds more like

mosquitoes buzzing in Minnesota

than it does race cars.

I'm not gonna lie to you there.

Jesus, awesome in power.

You know, 350,000 people are standing,

or probably sitting passed out by

now, I don't know, in bleachers

around an oval track cheering for

their race team and race car drivers

to be champions and victorious, and

to be immortalized for all time.

But you know, we serve.

The king of kings and Lord of Lords,

the savior, the conqueror over death

and hell victorious for all time.

The ultimate victory lane, right?

The ultimate winner circle Jesus,

who did a burnout over death and

stands as victorious for all time.

And that's who we worship.

And I don't begrudge anybody who wants

to watch guys driving and turn and left.

That's pretty cool stuff.

But at the end of the day, I'm

thankful that I can cheer for the

savior who has overcome everything

and let's us be a part of that.

Well, let's race day in Indiana.

And uh, I've been here for

like, what, 20 something years.

I don't know how long.

And before I came here, I didn't

know anything about racing.

And now that I've been here like

25 years-ish or whatever, I still

don't really know much about racing.

I'll be real honest with you.

I'm like the least qualified

guy to talk about racing.

I, I have learned a lot over the years.

Two documentaries have really been

inspirational in my life, helping

me understand some of the ins

and outs of how uh, racing works.

The first one I learned a lot about

nascar, um, from this documentary called,

uh, cars by Disney with Lightning McQueen.

I learned about pit stops and I

learned about, that's about all

I really can remember, but like

some stuff you know about racing.

And then thankfully someone came out

with this awesome documentary that

really helped 'cause it was about

Indianapolis in the 500 right Turbo.

And so after watching these two

documentaries, I feel very well

equipped to unpack racing for you today.

And, uh, maybe make a few

metaphors and a few tie-ins.

Ladies, last week while you were on

retreat, uh, we did this to the stage.

And honestly it was so much work.

We were like, we gotta get

two weeks outta this mess.

Right?

That's probably the bottom line.

So we put up some streamers and

decided to have a little fun with

this, uh, racing kind of imagery today.

Um, I don't know if you're into racing,

I would imagine that if you're super

hardcore racing, you're probably

one of the White Rock people who

are down at the race watching later.

We know who you are, we're taking names.

Uh, but if you're here this morning,

it might be that racing is something

you know a little bit about,

maybe don't care that much about.

Maybe you love it.

I don't know.

Either way, thanks for being here this

morning as we worship and we celebrate

and I'm gonna try to unpack a few thoughts

that I've been chewing on about racing

and this whole walking in faith with

Jesus and being in relationship with him.

'cause I think there's

some interesting tie-ins.

I dunno if this all started on our

men's retreat a few weeks ago with

the whole racing vibe that Jesse

came and shared with us and the Indy

500 being here and all these things.

But just there's a lot

of really interesting.

Thoughts that are tied to

this that at least have been

bouncing around in my head.

And you can disagree.

That's totally fair.

Jamie often does, but she's

homesick today so she can't

say a whole lot from this room.

Alright, well, let me talk about a couple

of key things as it relates to Indy 500

and uh, see if this makes some sense.

This idea here of qualifying

race teams have to do

qualifying laps, right?

For their poll position.

I don't know if you've paid attention

to this often, but this week there's

been a lot in the news, or maybe it

was last week, about the Penske Racing

team and some modifications on some

parts of their cars that maybe gave them

advantage in qualifying a and maybe even

in the races over the last year or so.

So much so that the Penske race

team had all their drivers, at least

last I understood this to be the

case, that they were moved to the

very back row of the Indy 500, which

you might be like, that's cool.

I like the back row at church, Chris.

Right?

Totally cool.

But it's actually not as cool

because no one has ever won the

Indy 500 from the back row ever.

At least that's what I was, I read

somebody said that they're wrong.

So am I. But it's kind of a big

punishment for these guys and Penske

fired like his top three guys in his whole

company, which was pretty significant.

It's kind of a really embarrassing

black mark for his race team.

But people do all kinds of things to

try to qualify, to get an edge, to get

the position that they want, or even

to qualify to be in the race, right?

You gotta have the right specs, you

gotta have the right equipment, you gotta

have the right speed and performance.

You gotta have a lot of things go your

way to get the right spots in the Indy

500 to qualify for this epic race, the

greatest spectacle in racing and have a

shot at being a champion, one thing that

you really gotta have is money, right?

Because let's be honest, this is

a multimillion dollar industry

and these guys are really actually

driving private jets around a track a

couple hundred miles an hour, right?

Like these guys are not driving your car

and my car around a track in the oval.

This is millions and millions and

millions of dollars worth of equipment.

Not to mention millions and millions of

dollars worth of expense just to be in

the race and participate in the Indy 500.

You gotta have a lot of

money to make this play out.

You gotta have deep, deep pockets to even

have access to be part of the Indy 500.

You have to.

In fact, it helps to have something

like this called sponsorship, right?

Where maybe a company or an organization

or an individual sponsors you as a

racer and sponsors your race team.

And this might be the only part you

are tracking if you hate racing.

It's why the colors of the cars are so

pretty and varied and amazing, right?

Because different companies with their

different colors and their logos, and

their images all over all their vehicles

and race suits and trailers, they're

sponsoring the racers and they're

getting a little bit of, you know,

notoriety and publicity out of the deal.

Otherwise, it's not

worth them doing right.

So we have these three big pieces that

I think are important parts of how this

race just south of us is happening here.

And I wanna think a minute about money

and qualifying and sponsorship as it

relates to this incredible opportunity.

We have to be in relationship with Jesus.

God gives us an opportunity to be part of

an eternal race team that is incredible

and competes at the highest level.

In fact, one that, let's be honest, is

gonna end up in Victory Lane just saying.

And if you're lactose intolerant,

you can drink the milk in heaven.

I'm hoping, just saying there is a

championship, wreath and trophy, maybe

crown, we'll touch on that awaiting

those who are on God's race team.

And we get invited into that

space, but very different than

the Indy 500, these things.

Play out significantly differently for us.

Let's talk money for just a second.

Um, if you want to be part of God's

race team, if you wanna be part of his

family and invited into relationship

with him, you gotta have money.

You gotta give in that

offering basket back there.

I'm just kidding.

You don't have to.

But

if some of you think that's true,

just go ahead and get up now.

We'll wait.

No, I'm just kidding.

Um,

so many times over the years,

the church gets accused of being

consumed with money, right?

Or that God is after your money.

Listen, listen, as Tony and I were

talking today a minute ago, right?

Like God owns the cattle

on a thousand hills.

He can write some pretty nice checks

when he wants to, when he needs to.

Maybe there's a lesson in there

that he doesn't need to or

want to because we shouldn't.

But beyond that point, God

doesn't need our money.

Way too often over the years,

people get consumed with, we have

to pay our way into God's good

graces, pay our way into access.

And there's been times over the

years where the church world as

a whole has gotten caught up or

even in pockets manipulating that.

Listen, God does want you to be faithful.

Lemme just pause there.

God wants us to be people who

tithe, who give 10% of everything

we have to him in obedience.

Not because he needs our money,

but because he wants our heart.

And he knows.

He knows what owns your heart.

And when you're faithful in the

financial things, he knows you'll

be faithful in the other things.

They're even more important and

he doesn't need your money, but he

also knows how much money holds you.

Right?

You know, part of what God's plan is for

us to be generous and to tithe and to give

offerings to him is because he wants to

help break the bondage money has over you.

That's a gift.

That's not a punishment to us.

He's trying to help us.

By saying, Hey, you don't need to

be consumed with this currency.

You need to be consumed with me.

I got all the currency you'll ever need.

Right?

But there is nothing that we can do

financially to get into God's race team.

There's nothing, scripture says this

in Roman 6 23, for the wages of sin is

death, but the gift of God is eternal

life through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

The wages of sin is death.

If you're like me and you're human,

you have a bank account, you got

one locked up, it's, it's online.

It's in the eternal cloud, but that

account registers a big fat zero

when it comes to heavenly currency

because the wages that I've earned

and you've earned because of sin,

those wages are death, and you can't

buy life with wages worth nothing.

You can't come to God and be like,

Hey God, look at what I've earned.

Look what I've got.

It's worthless.

There is no value on this earth

that gets us access to God.

No amount of gold or rubies or diamonds

or cash or credit or Bitcoin, like none

of that stuff gives us any access to God.

In fact, we see over here in Acts

eight 20, when Peter talks about, or

talks to Simon, the Soer, he says,

may your money be destroyed with you

for thinking God's gift can be bought.

People have always thought, man, if I

just have enough money and I give enough

money and I put enough money towards

things, I'm gonna get access to God

and I'm gonna have access to him, and

I'm gonna have a way to eternal life.

'cause look at what I did with the money

and how I gave and how generous I was.

We had a lot of people who are

philanthropists for a lot of bad

reasons and bad causes that have

nothing to do with honoring the Lord.

God has called us to be people

who hold money with an open hand.

'cause it's his and what he wants,

he takes and where he puts it,

he puts it not with closed fists

that say, no, God, this is mine.

Stay away.

Right?

You can't buy your way into heaven.

There's no chance you can't get access

because you have enough financial

resource when you're just paying with

crud and junk that he doesn't even need.

This is an interesting idea though,

qualifying, and this is really what got

me started down this whole crazy ordeal

because this idea of qualifying means

to fulfill necessary conditions based

on performance to fulfill necessary

conditions based on performance.

I dunno how many people I talk to who

are like, man, I'm not good enough

to, to be a, a follower of Jesus.

I'm not good enough to go to God.

I'm not good enough to go to church.

Satan's done a great job of deceiving.

What the requirements and the

necessary conditions are to

qualify to be on God's race team.

See, here's what scripture teaches us.

It says this in Romans three 10.

There's no one righteous, not even one.

And then you're like, well,

what about Sandy and Lamar?

Right?

They've been doing this a long time.

They must be righteous.

And then Sandy says, Nope, not him.

Right?

That's they.

Thank you, guys.

The reality is, none of us,

none of us are righteous.

None of us are good enough

for God, not any of us.

And yet, Satan gets us into this mindset

that we can't go to God, or we can't

access God, or we can't join his team

because we haven't quite got ourselves

cleaned up or put together enough

to be, you know, acceptable to him.

We haven't quite met the criteria to

be part of God's race team and invited

into his family, but it's not true.

Because while we were yet sinners,

Christ came and died for us.

When we were dead in our sin,

he came and gave us opportunity.

That's not, that's not

merit based salvation.

That's not earning anything.

Right.

Over in Romans 3 23, it says, all of

sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

All not some, all.

Every single one of us have fallen short.

And Ephesians two, eight through

nine says this, for it is by

grace that you've been saved.

You've been invited under God's race

team, you've been given opportunity

and access into relationship with

him by his grace, his kindness, his

gentleness, and his love for you

that he offered when it was totally

without merit, right through faith.

Your belief, and this

is not from yourselves.

It's a gift, right?

A gift from God, not by work

so that no one can boast.

Now, the scripture's gonna go on to say in

the next verse that, that, uh, we're gonna

do good works 'cause we're created by

God as his workmanship to do good things.

We absolutely are gonna

do good things right?

But we don't receive salvation

and forgiveness for our sin and be

offered this awesome opportunity

to be in relationship with God

because of what we do, right?

Not by works.

The Greek word here is, uh, Aragon,

and it means labor and deeds and toil.

And so many of us believe that if we

work hard enough and if we do enough good

deeds, that we're gonna be okay and we'll

have access to God and we'll be in heaven.

People say all the time, right?

This person lived a good life.

The problem is Jesus said, I'm the

way, the truth and the life, and no one

comes to the Father except through me.

Right?

That if we confess with our mouth

that Jesus is Lord and believe in

our heart that God raised him from

the dead, that we'd be saved, right?

That confession of our sin

and our belief in who Jesus

is, but that He's Lord, right?

That we submit and surrender

to him as the Lord of our life.

It's through Jesus.

I am the gate, I am the door.

He says, I am the way, not a way I'm it.

Right?

And it's not.

By doing that, you receive eternal life.

You can't do enough to

be acceptable to God.

You can't do enough to earn some place

in eternity and salvation through

your works and your actions, right?

What does the scripture say right here?

Says it's a gift.

It's a gift in the Greek here.

This, uh, doron means literally present.

How many of you, at your last birthday

when somebody gave you a present,

you were like, Hey, hang on a second.

Lemme grab my wallet

and cover you for that.

I appreciate you doing that.

Nobody does that.

You don't pay for a present, do you?

And how many of you received

a present like this?

Well, this year, Noah, you've earned it.

Unlike last year when you got no presents

on your birthday this year, right?

No, man, we all understand getting a gift.

You don't earn gifts.

Maybe Santa Claus has a deal with

you on the naughty list thing, right?

But that's not how God rolls.

You don't earn gifts.

Their presents, they're offered

to you without condition.

And so if you think somehow you have to

meet certain conditions to receive a gift,

well, you don't understand how gifts work.

Jesus came when we were

worthless and he gave us a gift.

He said, Hey, you can

have your sin forgiven.

You can join my race team.

You can be part of my family.

You can have your name written

in the Lamb's book of life.

You're qualified not because of

anything you did not by doing, but

you're qualified because I say so.

And here, here's the gift of life

and it's yours if you want it.

In fact, let's go back to

the scriptures a second.

We just read for the way of

sin is death, but the what?

Gift.

Of God, his eternal life.

Peter said, may your money be

destroyed with you for thinking God's.

What gift can be bought over Romans 3 23?

All of sin to fall

short of the glory, God.

But there's this huge

comma at the end, right?

That says clearly and are

justified by His grace.

As a what?

A gift.

Gift.

Gift.

Gift.

Gift.

Present, present, present.

Present.

Now, when you receive that gift,

maybe you, you act in a, I don't

know, a way of appreciation, right?

If you take that gift and you throw it

at the person and you scream at them,

and you run outside and set the house

on fire, probably not the best response.

When you get a gift, there's

usually relationship.

That's part of that too, right?

You don't usually get a gift from

random people who walk up and and

say, Hey, here's this huge gift,

and you're like, oh, well thank you.

Who are you again?

I don't know.

Who are you?

I don't know.

Right?

And yet, when we didn't know

Jesus and he was a stranger to us.

He still knew us.

He still knew what we were doing.

He still knew right where we were and

he still showed up in that space and

offered the gift of forgiveness for

our sin and salvation and eternal life.

That's what he offers

to us as a gift, right?

We are not qualified by anything

we do, but we are qualified

by what Jesus did for us.

And some of us dunno how to accept a gift.

Some of us think we gotta try to

pay him back and figure it out.

No, that's not how it works.

What's gonna happen is when you get

into his race team and you get into

his family, you're gonna start living

differently because you are grateful

and thankful for what he's done.

And it affects your

perspective on how you live.

And now you're part of a family that has

certain ways that we live and do life

because it's respectful and honors our

father, and we wanna roll with that.

That's so different than a checklist

of rules and regulations to try to earn

something from our Heavenly Father.

He qualifies us.

He has the resources to finance our

entry into the race without question.

And this idea of sponsorship, it might

actually kind of work because scripture

says in one Peter, you were ransom.

You not with perishable things or

silver, gold, stuff like that, but

with this precious blood of Jesus,

see, he sponsors you into eternity.

So maybe we ought to start wearing

Bible t-shirts and necklaces, right?

Maybe we ought to start looking like we're

sponsored by the King of Kings, Lord of

Lords, everywhere we go, because that's

the truth of who we are and this race

of life that we run and that we live.

We're not sponsored by the

enemy, and we're not sponsored by

selfishness, but we've been sponsored

by Jesus and we represent him.

He's made it so that we're in this race.

He's offered us opportunity to be in his

team and now we're a reflection of him.

People lose sponsorship from

time to time, don't they?

When they do certain things that

make it so that this person doesn't

wanna have anything to do with us.

And maybe we equate that with Jesus, where

we're like, man, I made some mistakes.

I failed.

I sinned.

Jesus pride is pulling his

sponsorship, but that's the

beauty of God's grace for us.

He says, no.

Hey, listen.

I love you.

Go and sin no more.

Let's get up and let's keep walking.

I'm not pulling my sponsorship.

I sponsor you for eternity.

You're with me and you're part of my team.

You're part of my family.

Let's go.

It's pretty cool stuff being sponsored

by the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

You know, I learned about crew

chiefs from Doc Hudson, right?

Guys who race direct, right?

People who are on that headset.

'cause they can see the whole

race and everything going on and

every turn and every collision

and every potential danger, right?

And, and we gotta stay connected to

Jesus so that he can speak life and

truth and direction into our life as

we navigate some of the heavy turns

and thick traffic and potential,

you know, collisions that are around

the corner for us on the racetrack.

We need to pay attention to

this idea of pit crew, right?

We talk about our men street

that we're to support one another

and encourage one another.

And we got people who are supposed

to be a pit crew in our life to

help us and to stand with us.

And we're supposed to be pit crewing

on some other guys' teams and

helping them and standing with them

and encouraging them in that space.

Flags on a racetrack, give

us instruction, right?

There's caution flags and there's.

I don't know what else flags there are.

'cause I don't do racing.

There's a finish line flag, right?

There's a green one, does something red?

One, stay away from that one.

It sounds like there's flags that

give us instruction and direction.

We could look at tires and fuel and

think about how we manage the resources

god's given us in this race of life.

Right?

If we don't pay attention, sometimes

we wear our tires out and we run out

of fuel before we get a chance to

swing into the pits and replenish

and be strong for the next round.

Man, our visor needs to be clean, right?

We had crud and gunk on that thing.

We gotta keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and

not all the crud in this life around us,

there's debris and distraction that comes.

We gotta have clear vision and man,

that grandstand of the Indy 500

with 350,000 people is backed out.

Just like the crowds of heaven, who

cheer us on scripture says this cool

image in Hebrews, this great crowd of

witnesses that has come before us, right?

Who cheers us on, we have a whole heavenly

grandstand cheering us on in this race

of life that we're walking through.

And ultimately guys, through

Jesus, we get to be people who win.

Everybody who's racing today,

everybody who's on that

track, they're hoping to win.

They're trying to win.

They don't know.

We already have the end of this story.

We know we just have to keep racing right?

We need to not get disqualified,

and we need not to destroy

our car in the in the wall.

We gotta keep racing because

the victory is certain.

Jesse used this cool

phrase on the retreat.

We race not for crowns or

not, or for trophies not.

Geez.

Crowns not trophies.

Jesse said it much nicer than that.

There's an eternal crown that

awaits those who endure, right?

And you guys one day are gonna stand

before the great white throne, the

greatest spectacle in all eternity.

And Jesus is gonna say, Hey,

this guy's on my team, this lady,

she's on my team, they're with me.

And they finish the race.

They've run well, well done.

Come get your milk.

Oh, I hate milk Anyways, crazy little

illustrations for sure, but there's

a lot we can pull from this race.

Paul talked about racing not cars,

but uh, racing there in the Greek

world and winning a wreath, right?

'cause that imagery kind

of helps resonate with us.

And I hope that as you think about

crazy race day stuff, that you

remember that God man, he has qualified

you not by anything you've done.

But he's qualified you to

be in relationship with him.

He has funded it, he's put

it together, he's sponsored

you, and he loves you so much.

And man, he wants to speak life into

you as you race around this crazy track.

And instead of maybe trying

to beat all the other drivers,

man, maybe he wants us to, okay?

So where the metaphor breaks down

help those other drivers win too.

All right, let's pray.

Lord, thank you for, uh, something

simple and silly like racing that,

uh, helps remind us of the truth that

you've revealed to us in your word.

Thank you.

That we don't have to qualify

by finances or performance.

You love us and you

offer us relationships.

Lord, I pray for those who maybe that

makes sense in a different way today

than it has before, that you'd give them

the courage to reach out to you, even

in this moment, to just say, Lord, I

want to be in a relationship with you.

I wanna be on your race team.

I may not even know the full extent

of what that means, but I recognize

what you're saying and I want that.

And Lord, for those of us who've been

a part of your race team and maybe a

little negligent on our focus and our

effort and our engagement, Lord, help

us to be refreshed and renewed in our

purpose and what you've called us to do.

Help us as we help others, pit crew for

other people, and help us to be willing

to ask for help from others around us.

Help us keep our eyes

fixed on you in this thing.

And listen intently to

our eternal crew, chief.

Thank God.

Thank you for the victory that's assured.

If we'll just continue to finish this

race that you've laid out for us.

Pray that you'd guide us in all of that.

We love you, and we

thank you in Jesus' name.

Amen.

Well, as we wrap up this morning,

uh, there's another race that has

concluded or is in the process

of concluding for several people.

We have some graduates that, uh,

we're gonna recognize and we're

that, uh, have finished the high

school race, some who finished

a week or two ago last Friday.

excitement and purpose and meaning

as you keep your eyes fixed on Jesus.

And we're excited, uh, to follow and

be spectators in this awesome next lap.

Lord Jesus, thank you for

these amazing young people.

Thank you so much, Lord, that we just

get the chance to do life with them a

little bit and experience, uh, their

love and the relationship with them.

Thank you for what they mean

to us as moms and dads, as

family members and as friends.

They've all been impactful in our lives,

and Lord, we're grateful for that.

And we thank you just for the gift

of being in relationship together.

Lord, thank you for the hard work

and the effort and the energy that

they've put in to accomplishing

graduation of high school.

And Lord, the big

accomplishment that that is.

And Lord, that's a something to be

really proud of, and we're proud of

them, and we believe you are too, as

they study to show themselves approved.

And God, we pray that you would keep

a teachable spirit and a learning

heart at the center of who they are in

the days ahead, that they'd continue

to grow and learn and be teachable,

especially from your Holy Spirit.

And God, as your people gathered here

this morning, we want to just pray

incredible blessing over their life.

Lord, we pray that you would guard

their hearts and minds in Christ

Jesus, that you would protect them,

that you'd divert their eyes and their

hearts and their ears from things

that would lead them into destruction.

And instead, Lord, that you

would blaze an awesome trail

before them that leads to life.

Lord, I pray that at every intersection

on this road, you would stand

there loudly with your Holy Spirit

proclaiming truth, and that they would

listen, and that they would choose

the road that leads to life in each

of the moments that lies before 'em.

And God, I pray that you would give

them amazing favor, that you would give

them opportunities, and Lord, that you

would give them resource in relationship

financially, vocationally, Lord, in

purpose, and in meaning that they would

find incredible joy in these days ahead.

Right.

God, I pray that they continue to be a

light to the people around them and as

they step out of the shadows of high

school into this college and career

age, Lord, that they would be powerful

witnesses and testimonies of who you are
