  1. Nice work.

  2. Nice work.

  3. That was, uh.

  4. I was a first.

  5. I think that's impressive.

  6. That's impressive.

  7. I've had a lot of fun with this whole,

  8. uh, sermon classic rock sermon series,

  9. mostly watching whatever these guys are

  10. gonna come up with each week when we

  11. piece together the psycho effort of, yeah.

  12. Now that, that was, that was our White

  13. Rock rendition of the final countdown,

  14. which is, uh, very impressive guys.

  15. Thank you.

  16. Great time on worship.

  17. I always love it, Austin.

  18. I always love it when the, uh, 20-year-old

  19. guys are running the soundboard.

  20. My ears are still ringing back

  21. there, but, uh, fun morning.

  22. Proclaiming the goodness of God.

  23. Uh, make a joyful noise.

  24. Shout unto the Lord.

  25. Right.

  26. Good stuff.

  27. Mia.

  28. I was just thinking about this.

  29. Welcome back from college for the weekend.

  30. Good to have you.

  31. But I was just thinking

  32. about Chase because, uh, in

  33. preparation for this message, um.

  34. People ask me all the time, you know,

  35. are we in the final countdown here?

  36. Right.

  37. And if you remember, chase our good buddy,

  38. chase every day at school, walk in with

  39. my backpack ready to start and chase,

  40. be like, Mr. Wait, I was just wondering,

  41. do you think we're in the last days?

  42. Like every day, man, I was

  43. like, bro, it is your last day.

  44. If you ask me one more time, right?

  45. Like, what is, what is going on?

  46. You know, I get this question a lot

  47. and people always want to talk about

  48. are we, are we in the end times?

  49. Are we, are we in the last days?

  50. Is Jesus coming back, you

  51. know, well soon, right?

  52. And it's a great question.

  53. It's probably an important question

  54. that the church has been asking for a

  55. while, and she'll probably keep asking

  56. because, uh, it kind of keeps us maybe on

  57. our toes being ready, paying attention.

  58. But this morning I want to spend

  59. a little time and I have no

  60. idea how far we're gonna get.

  61. I've, I've started doing

  62. something in the last six months.

  63. I spent a lot of time with the Lord

  64. trying to, trying to put together

  65. what I think he wants to say.

  66. And then I just start

  67. cutting it in half, right?

  68. Because I know you guys are

  69. gonna steal half the sermon time.

  70. It's just how it works.

  71. But, uh, we'll see how far we get today.

  72. But I wanna unpack this

  73. question a little bit.

  74. You know, are we in the last days?

  75. I wanna take you over

  76. to Hebrews for a second.

  77. We're gonna go a lot of places this

  78. morning, but Hebrews chapter one,

  79. verses one through two have a really

  80. interesting statement in here.

  81. This was written to the

  82. church by the church.

  83. Early in the life of the church of

  84. Jesus Christ, Jesus has gone to heaven.

  85. He said, go make disciples.

  86. I'm coming back, gonna go make

  87. a place, and I'm coming back.

  88. And the early church

  89. talked to each other a lot.

  90. They said this, check this out.

  91. In the past, God spoke to our ancestors

  92. through the prophets at many times and

  93. in various ways, but in these last days.

  94. He has spoken to us by his son.

  95. See, the early church believed

  96. they were living in the last days.

  97. They believed Jesus was coming soon

  98. and it's been a couple thousand years,

  99. but interesting that they thought

  100. at any moment Jesus would appear.

  101. And then how maybe lud

  102. to sleep we've become.

  103. That's a good question.

  104. This, this passage reminds me of something

  105. we did in our small groups, uh, over the

  106. last, I think it was either last week

  107. or the week before, talking about the

  108. parable of the vineyard owner, right?

  109. Who these people set up this vineyard,

  110. uh, or they rented this vineyard and

  111. the vineyard owners sent different

  112. servants to collect right over and over,

  113. and some got beat, some got killed.

  114. All kinds of stuff happened to him.

  115. Then ultimately, finally, as in

  116. though the final countdown, he sent

  117. his son and they mistreated him.

  118. Scripture says, and killed him.

  119. And that was the last messenger.

  120. That was the last servant who came.

  121. And it's interesting, the early church

  122. recognized that the prophets had come,

  123. the prophets had spoken, the prophets

  124. had declared God's message to people.

  125. And then ultimately, finally, God

  126. sent his own son Jesus to come.

  127. And in the last days, the church

  128. began to form and is still forming.

  129. Now if you think it's crazy, I want

  130. you to know that even some of these

  131. young dudes are thinking about this is,

  132. uh, Josiah, queen and Forrest Frank.

  133. I dunno if you've heard their new

  134. song, Jesus is coming back soon.

  135. It's a really good song.

  136. Probably gonna play it at the end

  137. of the service just as a heads up.

  138. But even a younger generation is

  139. recognizing that things are happening

  140. that make you start to go, huh?

  141. Huh?

  142. Right.

  143. Now listen.

  144. Um, these are really fun sermons

  145. to preach because nobody knows

  146. when Jesus is coming back, right?

  147. And it's been a big thing in

  148. the recent month of September.

  149. You heard a lot of people saying things

  150. like, what is it the 26th, 27th, 28th?

  151. Who knows?

  152. They just keep throwing dates.

  153. He's coming back.

  154. Be ready.

  155. Well, he is coming back

  156. 'cause he keeps his promises.

  157. He is gonna return, but nobody

  158. knows the day or the time or the

  159. hour, not the angels in heaven.

  160. Jesus said neither the son

  161. himself, but just God the Father.

  162. And when he says it's time, it's time.

  163. And when he pulls that trigger

  164. is go time and that's it, right?

  165. And in comes Jesus to sweep

  166. in and take his bride.

  167. In fact, the church, I think over the

  168. years has really sort of stayed away.

  169. Maybe it's because we don't know.

  170. Maybe it's because, uh, every time

  171. we think we're wrong, but maybe it's

  172. because the enemy wants us to sort of

  173. fall asleep and stop paying attention.

  174. A lot of people scoff at the

  175. idea of Jesus ever coming back.

  176. I mean, come on, right?

  177. It's been 2000 years.

  178. I don't know how you measure soon, right?

  179. This is what I tell, like for when

  180. Jamie was like, can you do some dishes?

  181. And I was like, I'll do it soon.

  182. I meant like thousands of years from

  183. now I'll get those dishes, right?

  184. I mean, I interpret soon to be

  185. a long time, and it's biblical.

  186. Let me show you, um, two Peter, chapter

  187. three, verses three through 10 says this.

  188. Above all, you must understand that

  189. in the last days, there's that phrase

  190. again, popping up in the New Testament

  191. church, scoffers will come scoffing and

  192. following their own evil desires, and

  193. they'll say this, where is this coming?

  194. He promised, ever since

  195. our ancestors died, right?

  196. Everything goes on as it has

  197. since the beginning of time.

  198. Same old, same old, same old, right?

  199. I mean, come on.

  200. Jesus is coming back.

  201. I had a guy tell me one time, he was

  202. a 65-year-old dude who grew up in

  203. some pretty popular churches around.

  204. He said, you know what?

  205. This was weird 'cause I've

  206. never heard a message about

  207. Jesus coming back the second.

  208. I've never heard it in church anytime in

  209. the last 35 years of being a Christian.

  210. I thought that kind of makes sense, right?

  211. 'cause nobody wants to talk about it.

  212. Nobody knows what to say about it.

  213. Maybe, but everybody just sort of, eh, I

  214. don't really think it's gonna happen, man.

  215. But guys, if you're

  216. paying attention, whew.

  217. Right?

  218. Like, check this out.

  219. But they deliberately, Peter says, forget

  220. that long ago, by God's word, the word

  221. of God, the heavens were created, right?

  222. Came into being formed out of

  223. water by water and by these waters.

  224. Also the world that time

  225. was deluged and destroyed.

  226. The early church believed that Noah's

  227. Ark wasn't a fairytale, just FYI right?

  228. That it actually happened

  229. as a consequence to sin.

  230. You know, what was happening in the

  231. days of Noah, as Jesus said, it'll

  232. be in the days of the Son of Man,

  233. just as it was in the days of Noah,

  234. that people are eating and drinking.

  235. And marrying and given in

  236. marriage, which I'm a big fan of.

  237. I'll be honest, this has

  238. been the best birthday ever.

  239. Jamie's birthday's tomorrow, and all

  240. she wanted was a future daughter-in-law.

  241. So we are set right?

  242. We are set.

  243. No, not, that's not all she wanted.

  244. Okay.

  245. Okay.

  246. Um, I'm kinda excited

  247. about marriage stuff.

  248. It's pretty exciting and we should

  249. be doing life right, but what's gonna

  250. happen when Jesus returns is that

  251. we're all gonna be busy doing life

  252. and it's gonna catch us off guard.

  253. The same word, the word of God, right?

  254. Declares that heaven and earth

  255. are reserved for fire, being

  256. kept for the day of judgment

  257. and destruction of the ungodly.

  258. And don't forget man with the Lord.

  259. A day is like a thousand years and a

  260. thousand years, like a day God lives in

  261. eternity and a thousand years, right?

  262. It's just nothing for him.

  263. The Lord is not slow in keeping his

  264. promise as some understand slowness.

  265. Instead, he's patient with you

  266. not wanting anyone to perish, but

  267. everyone to come to repentance.

  268. God is not, how do I say this?

  269. Like appropriately, God's not dumb.

  270. He knows what he's doing.

  271. He's not like screwing

  272. this up in eternity.

  273. Be like, oh crud, I was

  274. supposed to come back.

  275. I didn't come back yet.

  276. I, it was supposed to be

  277. soon and now it's 2000 years.

  278. What am I gonna do?

  279. I gotta reschedule things for the whole

  280. re he knows what he's doing, he has

  281. plan and purpose and it's way beyond us.

  282. And for whatever reason,

  283. it's not foolishness.

  284. It's not a lack of planning.

  285. It's not an A, DH, D God thing.

  286. It's literally that he is being

  287. patient and he is enduring.

  288. And you know, if I was God and I saw

  289. all the people who would come and

  290. all the people who have come, and

  291. I would have a heart for all those

  292. people, I'd have a really hard time

  293. pulling the trigger, probably myself.

  294. Except I, I have an easier time 'cause

  295. I'd just get mad like a human would.

  296. But God's compassion and his mercy and

  297. his loving kindness is so far beyond us.

  298. But don't be foolish and believe

  299. what the enemy wants to tell

  300. you that Jesus isn't coming.

  301. You don't have to be ready for his return.

  302. It's a long way off.

  303. Well, is it?

  304. The only reason he hasn't come back is

  305. because of his patient loving kindness.

  306. But at some point in time, he's gonna

  307. flip that switch and that'll be it, right?

  308. Make no mistake, the day of the

  309. Lord will come like a thief.

  310. In the night when you least expect

  311. it, the heavens will disappear.

  312. When a roar right, the elements will

  313. be destroyed by fire and the earth

  314. and everything in it laid bare.

  315. Scripture says, when the son

  316. of man appears that all nations

  317. will mourn for his coming.

  318. I think the translation is, holy crap,

  319. I didn't think this was gonna happen.

  320. And that's where it's gonna be.

  321. Right.

  322. For those who don't know Christ,

  323. are we in the final days?

  324. Are we in the final countdown?

  325. Listen, there's a bunch of brilliant

  326. theologians who argue all kinds

  327. of points of revelation, and

  328. I totally can appreciate that.

  329. I'm just gonna say this, the church of

  330. Jesus Christ, the people who hung out

  331. with Jesus, believed they were in the

  332. last days, and that any moment Jesus could

  333. return and they lived like it, so I'll bet

  334. you, and you're probably so much smarter

  335. than those guys who hung out with Jesus.

  336. But I'll bet you there's wisdom in

  337. living in the reality that Jesus is

  338. coming back and he's coming back soon,

  339. and we are seeing things happen, and

  340. we are seeing things move and the

  341. way God's spirit is being poured out

  342. and sons and daughters prophesied.

  343. There's some cool things

  344. happening all around the world.

  345. Pieces are moving around a chess

  346. board that just connects some

  347. dots that you're like, huh?

  348. And Jesus said, you know, you don't

  349. know the day of the hour, but you can

  350. look at the fig tree and the leaves.

  351. Right now, it's autumn, right?

  352. Not talking about your girlfriend, Noah.

  353. It's autumn and the leaves are

  354. beginning to turn and change, right?

  355. And we're like, huh, I'll

  356. bet you winter's coming.

  357. Right?

  358. Some of us are in, you know, I don't

  359. think it's gonna happen this year.

  360. Right?

  361. It's gonna come, right?

  362. We can see the changing of the season.

  363. We see the clouds build in the horizon.

  364. We're like, oh, smells like rain.

  365. Tastes like rain out

  366. here, clouds everywhere.

  367. It's dark, it's gonna rain, right?

  368. Jesus said, you're gonna notice.

  369. Just be honest, that's what it is, right?

  370. If I knew the mom and dad were coming at

  371. three o'clock and I was up at 10 o'clock

  372. in the morning on a Saturday chilling

  373. in high school, that gave me literally

  374. four hours and 57 minutes to get whatever

  375. done I wanted to, and three minutes to

  376. be busy at work in the kitchen before mom

  377. and dad showed up and to say, whew, mom,

  378. I've been working so hard for five hours.

  379. Which is a pretty hard

  380. sell, let's be honest.

  381. But if you saw me do dishes right,

  382. James, you'd know maybe it takes a while.

  383. But the reality is this, if we knew when

  384. Jesus was coming, we'd all be ready.

  385. We would be, but we wouldn't probably

  386. be real ready until it was about time.

  387. You know?

  388. 'cause we got other stuff we could

  389. probably get away with and, and do.

  390. And plenty of time to, plenty of

  391. time to, to repent of our sin and to

  392. get our lives where they need to be.

  393. If we knew right.

  394. Just maybe take a few

  395. days off and not lock in.

  396. Jesus isn't stupid.

  397. He knows us and he knows that.

  398. Uh, if we told us when he was coming

  399. back, we'd be busy living sinful,

  400. pagan, selfish lives until then.

  401. But maybe we're busy doing that anyhow,

  402. that's probably a thought, right?

  403. Second Timothy chapter three.

  404. Let's dive in here and take a look.

  405. It says.

  406. You should know this Timothy

  407. that, oh look, in the last days

  408. there will be difficult times.

  409. Let's just zoom in here 'cause we're

  410. gonna unpack this a little bit.

  411. There will be difficult times, right?

  412. There will be difficult times.

  413. Look at this phrase.

  414. This is an interesting

  415. concept, difficult times.

  416. Jesus says this in, uh, John 1633.

  417. He says, I've told you these

  418. things so that in me, you're

  419. gonna have peace, right?

  420. This world, you're gonna have trouble.

  421. But take heart, I've overcome the world.

  422. You know, that, uh, actually

  423. this word is tribulation.

  424. Uh, in the, in the Greek language is

  425. tribulation that we're talking about.

  426. Not just trouble.

  427. We're gonna stub our toe.

  428. Dang it.

  429. It's gonna be a toughie.

  430. No, it's.

  431. Tribulation.

  432. We're gonna have really hard, really

  433. difficult, really painful times.

  434. Now take heart.

  435. 'cause I've, I've

  436. overcome the world, right?

  437. And in James, it reminds us that blessed

  438. is the one who perseveres under trial.

  439. Right?

  440. Who endures, who stands because they'll

  441. receive the crown of life of the

  442. Lord's promised to those who love him.

  443. But make no mistake, there's gonna be

  444. hard, hard, difficult times that come.

  445. I don't know what your um, what

  446. your revelation theology is.

  447. Uh, I always love meeting people

  448. who like get real hardcore

  449. as a defining characteristic

  450. of their spiritual identity.

  451. That where they stand, you know, in

  452. Revelation used to be like, you can

  453. be people who were like, yeah, I'm a

  454. five point Calvinist mid Triver, who

  455. believes in, uh, predestination only?

  456. Not really.

  457. Okay.

  458. I don't, what are you talking about, bro?

  459. What?

  460. Let's get into this, right?

  461. But in the book of Revelation,

  462. it's all about the end, right?

  463. You know, the real bummer is.

  464. It.

  465. There's this idea of a rapture

  466. where Jesus is gonna return and

  467. take the bride and we're outta here.

  468. Woo.

  469. But ironically, in God's brilliant

  470. approach to how he deals with

  471. humanity, he doesn't actually tell

  472. us where that fits in revelation.

  473. Interesting.

  474. Right?

  475. And so we got old dudes who spent

  476. 80 years studying and living in the

  477. bottom of a basement with dusty old

  478. books who, who kind of come to the

  479. conclusion, preread mid trip, post trip.

  480. Actually, if you dunno what that

  481. means, I just want you to know

  482. teenagers, you guys are famous.

  483. Your generation for

  484. shortening words, right?

  485. Like bet it's just like an

  486. old, you know, nerdy redneck.

  487. You betcha.

  488. But you gotta say bet.

  489. And it's cool.

  490. And then you say Riz because it's like

  491. charisma, but you're shortening it.

  492. Here's the deal.

  493. Old Bible theologians, old guys.

  494. They took the word tribulation and

  495. they turned it to Trib and they're

  496. like, pre-trib, mid trip, post trip.

  497. So you guys are just as cool as

  498. like all the old Bible theologians.

  499. I'm just saying.

  500. Just know that it's not

  501. new with your generation.

  502. But here's the deal.

  503. We have these people,

  504. we have these people.

  505. Hey man, that was fire.

  506. And you know it, there's

  507. these people, right?

  508. Um, there's these people who've spent

  509. their whole life arguing about whether

  510. Jesus is gonna come before anything

  511. happens in the Book of Revelation.

  512. No tribulation, no hardship, no

  513. difficulty, no tribulation, great

  514. tribulation, tribulation, wrath,

  515. tribulation, whatever it is.

  516. They're gonna come at

  517. the beginning, right?

  518. Jesus is gonna show up.

  519. We're out.

  520. We have people who believe they're

  521. gonna have to endure a period of

  522. tribulation, but maybe not the great

  523. tribulation and the wrath of God.

  524. That's poured out on all sinfulness

  525. and they're out mid trip.

  526. And then we have people who believe, nope.

  527. I can't see it.

  528. We're just gonna endure the whole thing.

  529. And whoever's left standing,

  530. you're out post trip.

  531. And here's the deal.

  532. Uh, I don't really care at all other than

  533. I think there's some wisdom as a follower

  534. of Jesus, when Jesus says, you're gonna

  535. face tribulation, be ready sometimes.

  536. And listen, I'm all in favor of pre-trib.

  537. I would love before it get hard that

  538. God's like, Andy, why don't you come

  539. on up here and hang out in paradise?

  540. And I'm like, sounds like a good move.

  541. Jesus.

  542. I'll go with you.

  543. Right?

  544. A hundred percent.

  545. If, if we get to vote,

  546. that is my vote, right?

  547. Uh, I've landed probably more and

  548. more over the years, and maybe it's

  549. the more I've grown up to say, uh,

  550. I might have to endure hard stuff.

  551. So I wanna at least be ready to

  552. endure this mid trib reality.

  553. And if I gotta deal with a lot of

  554. tribulation, then God gets me outta here.

  555. Okay.

  556. And then quite honestly, I look

  557. at the post trip and I'm like,

  558. dude, y'all gonna be dead.

  559. There's no way.

  560. Right?

  561. Church is just gonna be so beat up.

  562. I can't see it, but okay, whatever.

  563. Let's be ready to endure.

  564. Either way, scripture's

  565. full of this warning.

  566. Hey America, you're not

  567. gonna get out for free.

  568. You don't get a get outta jail free card.

  569. As a follower of Jesus where you

  570. don't have to do hard things,

  571. face hard things, Jesus going

  572. rescue you from having to endure.

  573. No.

  574. All of the church, all the years

  575. of, of the church in existence

  576. for the last 2000 years has had to

  577. stand and endure and persevere under

  578. trial and difficulty and hardship.

  579. So I don't mind if you're a

  580. pre-trib guy, that's great.

  581. I don't care.

  582. Be ready.

  583. And there's a benefit to that, right?

  584. Like at any moment before it gets

  585. hard, you better be paying attention.

  586. 'cause Jesus is gonna show up.

  587. I think that'll preach too, right?

  588. Maybe be ready is just the

  589. message across the board.

  590. Be ready to stand.

  591. Be ready to go.

  592. Just be ready because

  593. Jesus is coming back.

  594. There's gonna be hard and difficult

  595. times when it's the season of his return.

  596. Here's what the conditions of

  597. the world are gonna look like.

  598. Check this out.

  599. People will be lovers

  600. of themselves, right?

  601. And lovers of their money

  602. to love them selves.

  603. Thankfully, we don't see that happening

  604. in our culture where, uh, what do we

  605. call that picture you take of yourself?

  606. Just kidding.

  607. I'm just kidding.

  608. It's a selfie.

  609. I know, right?

  610. Everything's about me, right?

  611. Self egocentrism.

  612. The world revolves around me.

  613. I'm the son in my universe.

  614. Everything's about me, me,

  615. me, me, my neighbor, the poor

  616. people around me who need Jesus.

  617. Sure.

  618. If it fits within what my agenda

  619. and what I want to do is all

  620. about, absolutely I'm for it.

  621. Right?

  622. But that's still based on

  623. me, me, me, me, me, me, me.

  624. The world is gonna look like a whole

  625. crazy place filled with selfishness.

  626. I don't know if you see that.

  627. If you don't, maybe you're

  628. part of the problem.

  629. I'm just saying, right.

  630. Selfishness.

  631. It's everywhere.

  632. I love this phrase, and they're

  633. gonna be lovers of their money.

  634. Check this out.

  635. Becca.

  636. You wanna come help pronounce

  637. this future daughter-in-law?

  638. Didn't think so.

  639. Okay, we're good.

  640. Alright.

  641. This word right here, uh,

  642. Fila gurus sound like guru.

  643. I'm talking to a baby

  644. guru Ros gurus, right?

  645. Like it's, uh, it's probably, I don't

  646. wanna pronounce this right, Fila gurus

  647. is actually made up of two words.

  648. Check this out.

  649. This is kind of, this is

  650. kind of a cool concept.

  651. It's made up of these two words, philos

  652. and a gurus, and it means this friend

  653. and silver, what an interesting word.

  654. It literally means friend of silver.

  655. Now I'm not talking about this

  656. guy who some of you might know,

  657. and this might date myself, right?

  658. Uh, definitely a friend of silver.

  659. He rode a horse named Silver.

  660. Sorry, if you don't get that joke,

  661. I thought that, raise your hand

  662. if you get that joke, please.

  663. I just want, oh yeah, let's go.

  664. That's good.

  665. That's good stuff.

  666. Okay.

  667. Do you know there's a distinction in the

  668. Bible between being a friend of God and

  669. being a friend of silver, that you are

  670. loyal and loving towards your money versus

  671. loving towards your heavenly Father.

  672. Now, can you have any money?

  673. Sure.

  674. If you recognize it's all God's

  675. anyhow and you're just a steward

  676. of it and everyone wants to do with

  677. it, he does and tells you and you're

  678. like, got it, got it, got it, got it.

  679. There's nothing wrong with

  680. money, it's just the heart of

  681. the person who possesses it.

  682. Right.

  683. My classes we, I was talking

  684. about how we hold our hands open.

  685. Towards God, right?

  686. So whatever we have, he can take, right?

  687. It's all his and what we do.

  688. And we're stupid, but we're like, I'm

  689. gonna hold my stuff, hold my money,

  690. my possessions, and two things happen.

  691. One, we don't realize we're

  692. literally shaking our fist at God.

  693. And two, do you know how hard it is for

  694. God to put more things in that hand?

  695. He can't.

  696. 'cause you got it closed and

  697. you're shaking your fist at him.

  698. We gotta be people who live

  699. like this, that everything we

  700. have, it's all his right money.

  701. If we're a friend of

  702. silver, then silver's what?

  703. We hold tight.

  704. We're a friend of God.

  705. That's a whole different picture, right?

  706. In the end days, in the last days

  707. where things get the darkest people

  708. are gonna be consumed with selfishness,

  709. where they love themselves and they're

  710. gonna be consumed with their love of

  711. silver, gold possessions and stuff.

  712. Thankfully we don't see

  713. that in our culture, right?

  714. Just kidding.

  715. Alright.

  716. They will be boastful and proud.

  717. Hmm.

  718. Arrogant, cocky, mouthy, disrespectful.

  719. Sorry.

  720. I was just reading a

  721. list about American 2025.

  722. Um, yeah, that's the reality, right?

  723. That's who we've become as a place, right?

  724. We are arrogant and we are proud,

  725. and we are selfish and self.

  726. I mean, we're just

  727. consumed ourself so much.

  728. We're defiant towards anybody else.

  729. Like that's a picture of our attitude.

  730. In fact, it seeps into our

  731. attitude towards God, right?

  732. That we are people who scoff at God

  733. in our arrogance and in our pride.

  734. We mock and we scoff The creator himself

  735. we're like, I know better than you.

  736. Get out of my way.

  737. God, you don't even

  738. know what you're doing.

  739. I got this ridiculous.

  740. I wanna do a little, uh,

  741. Greek work here a minute.

  742. This phrase scoffing at God.

  743. I wanna see if we have any legit Greek

  744. scholars in the house here today.

  745. Check this out.

  746. I'm gonna just put this word up here.

  747. Just take a real good look.

  748. Anybody know how to pronounce that?

  749. Just what to say.

  750. Bla famous Blas.

  751. Famous Blas.

  752. Famous scoffing at God is

  753. literally the Greek word.

  754. What?

  755. Blasphemy.

  756. Blasphemy.

  757. Nice job.

  758. Sixth grade crushes it.

  759. Blasphemy, right?

  760. Here's the the biblical description of

  761. those who scoff, who mock who, whatever.

  762. God blasphemous.

  763. I don't know if we ever see

  764. this in the world around us.

  765. I sure do, but we literally are

  766. people who live in defiance towards

  767. God and God says, that's blasphemy.

  768. That's pretty intense, right?

  769. Oh, and it gets worse.

  770. Man.

  771. We're escalating.

  772. Check this out.

  773. What's the next phrase?

  774. Disobedient to their parents.

  775. Yeah.

  776. Right.

  777. Whoa.

  778. So much for sixth grade.

  779. Looking good on the front row.

  780. That was just the last question, right?

  781. Hey, check this out.

  782. I've wrestled with this forever

  783. 'cause my dad made me memorize this.

  784. Listen, these are the worst things, son.

  785. No, I'm just kidding.

  786. He didn't do that.

  787. But should have.

  788. Why in the world does God put

  789. disobedient to parents right next to

  790. blasphemy in where this culture's at?

  791. Well, hey guys, lemme say

  792. something really important to

  793. you about obeying your parents.

  794. It's one of the 10 commandments

  795. that we honor our father and mother.

  796. And if you can't honor your

  797. parents who you see and you can't

  798. respect your parents, who you see,

  799. you will not honor and respect a

  800. God you can't see, you will not.

  801. And God teaches us that if we are people

  802. who are defiant and disrespectful to our

  803. parents, that's a pattern of behavior.

  804. That will be how we engage with God.

  805. That doesn't mean we like

  806. everything our parents do.

  807. It doesn't mean we're voting alongside

  808. the punishments or the consequences.

  809. Absolutely.

  810. But people who are defiant

  811. and disrespectful and

  812. disobedient to their parents.

  813. God puts on this list of some of

  814. the worst attributes and how just

  815. degrading the culture has become

  816. that that's what they've arrived at.

  817. Being people who disobey their parents.

  818. It's kind of heavy stuff.

  819. It actually matters to God that we obey

  820. our parents, that we're respectful to

  821. our parents, and ungrateful, ungrateful.

  822. This kind of fascinates me.

  823. You know what the

  824. opposite of ungrateful is?

  825. Grateful.

  826. Grateful.

  827. Yeah.

  828. Only not grateful.

  829. Grateful.

  830. Full, right?

  831. Full of gratitude, right?

  832. Totally misspelled, but

  833. totally full of gratitude and

  834. thankfulness and appreciation.

  835. Now, church, listen carefully.

  836. This is important.

  837. This is a list of things that the

  838. world is starting to look like.

  839. And it seeps into the church

  840. of Jesus Christ, right?

  841. Selfishness, the love of money,

  842. arrogance, pride, scoffing, mocking

  843. God, not obedient to our parents

  844. or obedient to him and ungrateful.

  845. And we have to be really

  846. careful because this is what the

  847. culture is going to look like.

  848. And don't miss this.

  849. When you're in a culture, you soak and you

  850. marinate day after day in that same space.

  851. And Jesus warns us as things get darker.

  852. This is what it's gonna look like.

  853. This is what you're gonna be around.

  854. This is what you're gonna soak in.

  855. Be very careful and very aware church.

  856. And so I stumbled across this question

  857. as I was thinking about this, because

  858. for me, I look at all of these

  859. things and maybe there's not a cure

  860. for all of them within the church,

  861. but I thought this was interesting.

  862. How would being grateful

  863. change that entire list?

  864. Think about this.

  865. How would it look different?

  866. Maybe the world's gonna

  867. do what it's gonna do.

  868. Sounds like it is.

  869. But as followers of Jesus Christ, what if?

  870. What if instead of being selfish,

  871. we approach things with gratitude.

  872. How would gratitude

  873. affect our selfishness?

  874. Well, guess what?

  875. When we're thankful and appreciative

  876. for what we have and what God's doing,

  877. and we begin to have eyes to see things

  878. beyond ourselves, it affects how consumed

  879. we are with our own agenda, our own

  880. circumstances, even our own injustices.

  881. 'cause here's the thing, guys, you're

  882. gonna live in a world where it hates you.

  883. It's gonna be hard and difficult.

  884. You're gonna get treated

  885. like crap a lot of times.

  886. And so you fight for your way, you fight

  887. for your justice, you fight for your

  888. position, or you approach with humility

  889. and a recognition that we are called to

  890. be people who love our neighbor as ourself

  891. and give preference to one another.

  892. And love and our own agenda gets out of

  893. the way when we're living in gratitude

  894. towards God for what he's done in us.

  895. We don't get consumed with what we don't

  896. have and what he's not doing for us.

  897. We're too busy being thankful

  898. for what he has done.

  899. Loving their money.

  900. This is about coveting and the Greek,

  901. the word actually gets translated

  902. sometimes as coveting for this phrase.

  903. You know what coveting is?

  904. I want what you have, or

  905. I want what I don't have.

  906. Do you know what gratitude is?

  907. I'm thankful for what I do have and

  908. when we're so busy being thankful

  909. for what we do have, there's no

  910. margin, there's no room, there's

  911. no mental space for what we don't.

  912. You don't get consumed with covetousness

  913. and coveting what everybody else has.

  914. When you're just full of

  915. gratitude for what you have.

  916. They don't even co-exist.

  917. It's the antidote, boastful,

  918. and proud arrogance.

  919. How am I gonna shake my fist

  920. in arrogance against the God?

  921. I'm so thankful for what he's doing in

  922. my life, and I'm so grateful and I trust

  923. him because of my thankfulness and what

  924. he's done and what he's gonna do, right.

  925. And how about just disrespect for God

  926. doesn't even, doesn't even compute, right?

  927. God, thank you for all you're doing, but

  928. I'm gonna scoff and I'm gonna mock you.

  929. God, thank you for the ways

  930. you're at working in my life.

  931. Thank you for even the trials and the

  932. hardships you're helping me walk through,

  933. but I scoff at you in this moment.

  934. It, it doesn't even make sense, right?

  935. It's doesn't even part of

  936. the same thought process.

  937. You know how hard it is to be

  938. disrespectful to your parents when you're

  939. thankful that God gave you parents and

  940. put you in a home and gave you opportunity

  941. to do life with a roof over your head

  942. and food in your stomach, and have an

  943. opportunity to build and create, and

  944. have life, and have families of your own.

  945. One day when you're so consumed with how

  946. thankful you are for the parents god's

  947. given you, and that you have a family.

  948. Maybe they're not perfect, I can

  949. guarantee they're not if they're human

  950. beings, but where somebody loves you

  951. and cares about you, when you're so

  952. consumed with that, do you have any

  953. idea how hard it is to be disrespectful

  954. and disobedient towards your parents?

  955. It's virtually impossible.

  956. Mom and dad, I'm very thankful for you

  957. and I thank you for the ways you're

  958. trying to help me grow and learn.

  959. I'll tell you a little trick too.

  960. Teenagers and young people and maybe

  961. people who are 70 and living at home with

  962. their parents, listen, here's the deal.

  963. When you're grateful towards your parents,

  964. it also disarms their sense of needing to

  965. correct and redirect and come down hard

  966. to get you to move in the right path.

  967. When you're walking in obedience, you

  968. don't experience a ton of consequences

  969. and suffering and pain and anguish 'cause

  970. your parents aren't trying to redirect

  971. you towards walking in the right way.

  972. So like, I'm no brilliant guy, but I

  973. learned early on obey less spankings.

  974. And then I got older and I was like, obey.

  975. And I get to go do fun things with my

  976. friends instead of be grounded, right?

  977. Like it's just math, like one equals the

  978. other, just it's the only math I got.

  979. Right?

  980. But just obey.

  981. Seek to obey.

  982. But if you do it in a heart of gratitude,

  983. it disarms your parents' intensity.

  984. It just does.

  985. Try it without gratitude.

  986. That works, right?

  987. Hey, son, please do this.

  988. You know what?

  989. You guys suck and you never do anything

  990. nice for me at all, and I hate my life.

  991. Oh, well let's address this.

  992. Right?

  993. And you force your parents to bring

  994. some, some heat to that, right?

  995. Well, lemme tell you a little tiny secret

  996. when you do that with God, it's the exact

  997. same deal when you operate with gratitude.

  998. Lord, thank you for what I'm walking

  999. through, even though it's so hard, thanks

1000. to the way you're molding and shaping me.

1001. Do you know who's really motivated

1002. to get you out of that and moved on

1003. to the next step of something good?

1004. You're heavenly Father who actually

1005. loves you and likes you, right?

1006. He's not trying to make

  1007. your life miserable.

1008. He's trying to help you grow.

1009. And that gratitude helps us step into

1010. a place where we can grow, right?

1011. I don't know that the secret sauce to

1012. all of this is that the Church of Jesus

1013. Christ lives with gratitude in our heart

1014. so full that we can't do anything else.

1015. But I'll tell you what, man, if

1016. we take a shot at it, I'll bet you

1017. it would be pretty revolutionary

1018. to every area of our life.

1019. 'cause this is the world that

1020. we're growing up in right now,

1021. all of us, whatever stage we're

1022. in, this is where we're at.

1023. This world is getting darker and it's

1024. gonna keep getting darker in these areas.

1025. But the church of Jesus Christ is called

1026. to shine and to look different, right?

1027. There is a ton on this list

1028. that I knew I would not get to.

1029. So I've got smart and threw

1030. a little TBD here, right?

1031. Or TBC to be continued.

1032. But I want to give you this little

1033. charge Church, not only to be people

1034. who walk in gratitude, but listen.

1035. All of this conversation about the final

1036. countdown, the last days, what's coming,

1037. and the things I'm gonna talk about

1038. next week that I'm super excited about,

1039. and the things you're gonna hear in

1040. your small group tonight and this week.

1041. They're all really predicated on one

1042. crazy intense concept to simply be ready.

1043. Listen, you may be like, you know what?

  1044. I don't really believe

1045. the end times are coming.

  1046. Okay?

1047. Your end time is coming, man.

1048. You just don't know when either could

1049. walk out to the parking lot and have

  1050. a stroke and you're in eternity.

1051. It could be your last day.

1052. At any moment, we have to be people who

1053. recognize the reality of the spiritual

1054. life around us, what God is doing to

1055. call outta sin and darkness into life.

  1056. He loves you.

1057. And listen, we also know the truth

1058. and the people that we love and do

1059. life with, they're in this cesspool

1060. of social mess, chasing after stuff in

1061. the darkness, and we have the light.

1062. So let's be ready to give an answer

1063. for the hope that lies within us.

1064. Let's be ready to stand in it when

1065. it's hard and difficult, and let's be

1066. ready to give an answer that's filled

1067. with gratitude and thankfulness to our

1068. heavenly Father, to the people around

1069. us, and even to the circumstances

1070. that beat us up a little bit.

1071. Lord, thanks for what you're teaching.

1072. Let's live with that kind of gratitude.

1073. And I think we're gonna see not only

  1074. a church that's ready, but a church

1075. that's excited and living in joy.

1076. And what was the word Jesus said?

  1077. Peace.

1078. He said Peace that you will not

1079. be anxious of heart, but instead

1080. you're gonna be peaceful in

1081. your heart 'cause you're ready.

  1082. Father, thank you for

1083. your word, for your truth.

1084. Thank you for the chance

1085. to be part of the church.

1086. A church that for 2000 of years is, has

1087. believed that at any moment you might

1088. show up and we're here in the last days.

1089. God the enemy wants to lure us

1090. to sleep and the enemy wants

1091. to lie to us about reality.

1092. Help us stand in the truth

1093. to be people who walk forward

  1094. with incredible gratitude.

1095. And Lord, people who are ready for

1096. whatever you call us to and impactful

1097. to the world around us as well.

1098. Thanks for your love for us.

1099. And I pray you'd continue to speak

1100. powerfully through your word next

1101. week as we continue in these thoughts.

  1102. In Jesus' name, amen.
