  1. Hey, thanks worship team.

  2. I couldn't have you guys actually play

  3. that because you would've done it.

  4. With way too much heart.

  5. You know what I'm saying?

  6. We're not gonna take, actually

  7. I was thinking about this.

  8. How crazy.

  9. A contrast from all hail king

  10. Jesus to we're not gonna take it.

  11. Nope.

  12. We're not gonna take it.

  13. Right.

  14. Don't even try.

  15. It's our life.

  16. It's our song.

  17. Right.

  18. Crazy.

  19. Crazy.

  20. I don't think there's a more iconic.

  21. Rock anthem that captures the heart of

  22. man's rebellion better than this song.

  23. You know, we're not gonna take it.

  24. We're just gonna do what we want to do.

  25. The powers that be.

  26. Yeah.

  27. We'll fight the powers that be

  28. right, and that's God himself.

  29. We're not gonna take it well.

  30. Hey listen, I was super excited today to

  31. walk through the big finale of the classic

  32. rock series that we've been going through.

  33. I keep wanting, say we've been

  34. rocking through, uh, I had my

  35. AC DC Jesus shirt ready to go.

  36. I was gonna impress Mike.

  37. It was gonna be awesome.

  38. He's gonna be like Jesus.

  39. He was gonna be super good today.

  40. Uh, and then I had to yield a

  41. little bit, I think, to the Lord

  42. of heaven and earth because.

  43. I'm telling you, man, it was so fun

  44. listening to like 30 classic rock

  45. songs and Satan does an amazing

  46. job of perverting the truth, right?

  47. And my plan was, while Jamie

  48. was next door rocking the teen

  49. preteen class, I was gonna pervert

  50. the other stuff for good, right?

  51. I was gonna take what Satan had given

  52. us maybe and pervert it for God's glory.

  53. But uh, she just thought I was

  54. ridiculous, which is pretty normal.

  55. And I get that a lot, right?

  56. Actually, I worked on this a lot all

  57. week and kept building it out, kept

  58. building it out, and I was like, this

  59. is, this is, uh, this is gonna be cool.

  60. It's gonna be great.

  61. And then God just kind of kept saying no.

  62. And uh, I just kept hitting that.

  63. And then I was thinking about

  64. this song and how perfectly.

  65. Perfectly pictured it is that

  66. here I am saying, God, this

  67. is what I wanna preach on.

  68. This is what I wanna do.

  69. I'm really excited to do this fun thing.

  70. And he's like, that's

  71. not your church, bro.

  72. I'm, I'm the lead, I'm the head

  73. pastor at White Rock, right?

  74. Uh, I'm the head of the church.

  75. And so, uh, I can't do that today.

  76. I really want to just know that deep in

  77. my heart are a bunch of lame eighties

  78. tunes rocking around, bouncing around.

  79. I don't want you to.

  80. To stop believing, you know what I mean?

  81. And hold onto that feeling.

  82. There's so many things

  83. I wanna share with you.

  84. Uh, and maybe if God is really

  85. gracious, he'll let me do this

  86. knuckleheaded thing down the road.

  87. But today I gotta take you over second

  88. Timothy chapter four, verse five.

  89. And, uh, I don't really know why

  90. other than I spent some time in this

  91. passage in Timothy lately, and this

  92. passage just sort of grabbed me in

  93. a, in a way that it wouldn't let go.

  94. And, uh.

  95. We could spend some time talking through

  96. in this classic rock series, the, the

  97. whole, whole story, right, of God's

  98. dealing with mankind and our rebellion.

  99. That's where I wanted to start and talk

  100. about our sin and all these things.

  101. Uh, but in two Timothy chapter four, verse

  102. five, there's really this interesting

  103. call to the church and how we're

  104. gonna engage and how we're gonna live.

  105. And I don't know who it's for, and

  106. I don't know why I gotta do it, but.

  107. God wouldn't let me let this go.

  108. So if it's for you, I just want you to

  109. know, I blame you for ruining my fun

  110. rock and roll Sunday I had planned.

  111. Um, but I'll bet it's way better

  112. than my lame attempts at some fun.

  113. So let's jump over to second

  114. Timothy chapter four, verse five.

  115. Put on the screen for you

  116. so you can track with it.

  117. It says this, but as for

  118. you always be sober minded.

  119. Endure suffering.

  120. Do the work of an evangelist,

  121. fulfill your ministry.

  122. Now Paul is talking to Timothy and

  123. Timothy's, this young dude, right,

  124. who's leading the church and this

  125. letter of Timothy as well as a

  126. letter of Titus that follows it are

  127. sort of these instructions, right?

  128. And some guidance on being

  129. a leader in the church.

  130. And so honestly, part of my

  131. wrestling was like, Lord, are you

  132. sure I should talk about this?

  133. I mean, they're not all a room

  134. full of pastors out here or

  135. young leaders in the church.

  136. And it's really directed, right,

  137. this phrase, but as for you, it's

  138. definitely directed to Timothy, right?

  139. So if your name's Tim, sorry,

  140. Tim, you gotta pay attention.

  141. One, one guy.

  142. This is for you, Tim.

  143. You ruined my rock and roll Sunday.

  144. Um, if your name's Timothy, I guess

  145. you could make the application.

  146. Uh, but the more I prayed about

  147. this, the more I wrestled with this

  148. and the more I kind of struggle

  149. with the Holy Spirit on this.

  150. Like, what do you wanna say

  151. to your people on this Lord?

  152. Um, I couldn't get away

  153. from the reality that.

  154. I talk a lot about how

  155. God calls us aos, right?

  156. In the New Testament we're all those

  157. who are believers in Jesus Christ are

  158. called aos in the Greek right saints,

  159. not sinners, not different tiered,

  160. but actually saints in Christ Jesus.

  161. And then late last night I was.

  162. In a debate with the guy like 1130

  163. last night we were doing carpet

  164. next door and this Spanish guy

  165. has become a really good friend.

  166. He wanted to argue Catholicism

  167. for like an hour at 1130 at

  168. night, and it was so interesting.

  169. But see, here's the thing.

  170. God calls us saints, he calls me a saint,

  171. and Jamie doesn't, but he does, right?

  172. And he calls those of you who

  173. are followers of Jesus Christ.

  174. Aos Holy One Saints to the AOS

  175. in Philippi, right to the AOS

  176. in Ephesus, to the church, to

  177. the followers of Jesus Christ.

  178. We're saints.

  179. And sometimes we do this thing in the

  180. church where if we can do it, and I

  181. would do it if I were you, if you could

  182. find sections of scripture that you

  183. could say, ah, doesn't apply to me.

  184. I don't have to listen,

  185. that's super fun and nice.

  186. Don't get me wrong, right?

  187. But I'm not so sure that this is

  188. something that doesn't resonate.

  189. Through most of the call to the church

  190. through most of the New Testament.

  191. And in fact, if you go into Titus some

  192. of the stuff he's gonna say to the

  193. older men and call the younger men

  194. to some self-control in these areas.

  195. So I'm gonna just stretch out here

  196. and say, I don't think this only can

  197. exclusively apply to a guy named Timothy

  198. who was helping as a leader in the church.

  199. And I wanna encourage you that

  200. God has called you to be a leader.

  201. In the church, in your house, the church

  202. in your heart, the church, in your school,

  203. in your workplace, in your environment.

  204. God's called you to be

  205. a leader in that space.

  206. And so instead of maybe just saying, Hey,

  207. none of this stuff applies to me, maybe

  208. say, Lord, how does this apply to me?

  209. I get the privilege of speaking

  210. during the week to a bunch of what

  211. I'm gonna call young leaders in the

  212. church, and a lot of 'em don't know

  213. it yet or don't want to own it yet.

  214. But that's really what they are, man,

  215. young people who are getting filled with

  216. what God's truth looks like and going into

  217. a world where God's calling them to lead.

  218. And instead of maybe backing off that

  219. we should maybe embrace it a little bit.

  220. So if you'll permit

  221. me, let's dive in here.

  222. As for you Timothy, as for you.

  223. Aos.

  224. Holy one set apart.

  225. One Follower.

  226. Jesus Christ.

  227. Always be sober minded.

  228. Always be sober.

  229. Minded, this word, um, FAOs in the

  230. fao in the Greek means to watch.

  231. It's a really cool picture.

  232. We think of sober as, uh, sobriety

  233. from alcohol or substance abuse,

  234. and it absolutely has that tie in.

  235. A hundred percent does, but it

  236. also has this image of watch.

  237. To be able to be attentive and

  238. engaged and to see, and to watch.

  239. And I guess if you're not sober,

  240. it's really hard to watch, right?

  241. It's really hard to pay attention

  242. and engage, but that's really

  243. what this scripture ties to.

  244. I was, I was thinking to myself like, I

  245. feel like I talked about this recently

  246. and I looked back and, uh, I'm gonna

  247. take you on a little 2023 flashback.

  248. Now, here's what I wanna say really quick.

  249. So, you know, if.

  250. You remember this sermon in 2023

  251. and if you've mastered the content

  252. from God's word and like you're

  253. like, dude, I already got this,

  254. you can just get up, take a break.

  255. Totally cool.

  256. I just wanna walk back into

  257. Thessalonians a minute and remind

  258. you of what maybe you already know.

  259. And if for the sake of those around you

  260. and you're like, I got this mastered.

  261. I already remember it.

  262. This is so boring for me.

  263. For the sake of those around you,

  264. if you wanna pretend like it's stuff

  265. you didn't remember, that's cool.

  266. Just being gracious to

  267. one another in love.

  268. Uh, or you could be like me, the guy who

  269. preached it and be like, dude, there's a

  270. lot of stuff in here I didn't remember.

  271. This is cool.

  272. Uh, okay, moving on first says, Romanians

  273. chapter five, six, and seven says this.

  274. So then let us not be like others who are

  275. asleep, but let us be awake and sober.

  276. For those who sleep, sleep at night,

  277. those who get drunk get drunk at night.

  278. But since we belong to the day, let us be.

  279. Sober and we see an

  280. interesting contrast here.

  281. Sober.

  282. Sober, drunk, drunk.

  283. There's definitely some substance

  284. abusing versus being awake and alert

  285. and engaged right in this scripture.

  286. But I think more than just

  287. that, there's this sense of

  288. this spiritual sobriety, right?

  289. This being spiritually sober.

  290. Scripture says here in this passage,

  291. others, they're asleep, right?

  292. Other people, people who aren't in

  293. relationship with Jesus Christ, who

  294. aren't trying to walk with him in

  295. alertness and engaged, they're asleep.

  296. Right?

  297. They're passed out.

  298. They're completely unaware

  299. of what's going on.

  300. They don't know what's happening.

  301. They don't see what's happening.

  302. It's part of why people

  303. get led astray, right?

  304. And there's a warning to the

  305. followers of Jesus Christ in the

  306. end, right in the final countdown,

  307. the end of the world as we know it.

  308. Sorry, more of those songs popping

  309. in, uh, at the end of time.

  310. Followers of Jesus Christ are

  311. cautioned that they not be led astray.

  312. You know how you get led astray?

  313. You're not paying attention.

  314. You're passed out.

  315. You're checked out, you're asleep.

  316. You're not aware.

  317. But let us be people who are

  318. different than those who are asleep.

  319. Let us be awake and let us be sober awake.

  320. Sober.

  321. This idea of aware, of alert, right on

  322. guard, that we're not numbed out, that

  323. we're not medicated, and just simply just

  324. me through life, just not paying attention

  325. because we're so consumed with substances

  326. or stuff we're watching, or stuff we're

  327. pouring into our hearts to just make the

  328. pain go away, make the reality go away.

  329. Right.

  330. We're just numbing out.

  331. Instead, we gotta be people

  332. who aren't caught off guard

  333. by what's going on, right?

  334. And here's why.

  335. Because I dunno what's up here.

  336. Let's see.

  337. This has been a long time.

  338. Those who sleep, they sleep at night.

  339. And those who get drunk get drunk

  340. at night and Jesus says, Hey, we're

  341. a little bit different than that.

  342. We belong to the day.

  343. We're not children of darkness.

  344. Who numb out, who check out,

  345. who do all these things that

  346. the world around us does.

  347. We engage and we live differently, right?

  348. We are light.

  349. We are children of our father in

  350. heaven who is light right in him.

  351. There is no darkness at all.

  352. So we stay away from the deeds of

  353. darkness and we walk in the light.

  354. So let us be sober, right,

  355. right-minded, present, engaged.

  356. What else?

  357. Ready on guard.

  358. So that we're feeling, so that we are

  359. knowing and so that we are seeing that's

  360. what spiritual sobriety looks like,

  361. that we know, that we see and that we

  362. feel, I mean, I don't know if you like

  363. me, but there's Sure a lot of times

  364. where like, I would really like to

  365. not feel Jamie and I always have this

  366. conversation, like, how do you feel like.

  367. That's a terrible question because

  368. I don't want to answer how I feel.

  369. I feel ready to rip my hair out.

  370. I don't have any left to pull on, so

  371. it's just not gonna be good, right?

  372. Like we have a lot of feelings and we

  373. try to sometimes mask those and hide

  374. from those and get away from those.

  375. But God calls us to be people who are

  376. engaged and who are present so that

  377. we can feel it's part of what we do

  378. in our sharing time is feel where

  379. each other are at and hear where each

  380. other are at, and give honest space.

  381. For vulnerability and safety and

  382. sensitivity and prayer and encouragement,

  383. and even fears and worries and

  384. anxieties to be presented and shared

  385. so that we can build each other up.

  386. Right?

  387. Amen.

  388. There's this really important space where

  389. we need to feel and we need to sometimes

  390. feel together rather than maybe going and

  391. feel with people you shouldn't feel with.

  392. I guess that should be

  393. like a lesson in school.

  394. Don't feel with people

  395. you shouldn't feel with.

  396. Hmm.

  397. That sounds, yeah, and here's

  398. what I don't like about this.

  399. It says always.

  400. You know what I mean?

  401. Always.

  402. I was really hoping it was

  403. like sporadically, randomly.

  404. When it's convenient, be sober minded.

  405. Right?

  406. Or when things aren't

  407. stressful, be sober minded.

  408. Or when things aren't hard,

  409. when it's easy, be sober minded.

  410. Right?

  411. We have a really hard time doing this.

  412. You know why?

  413. 'cause we have an ED problem.

  414. Um, lemme explain Escapism.

  415. Distraction.

  416. And lemme just say, uh, if escapism and

  417. distraction is like endless pornography,

  418. that's currently becoming an EDA

  419. epidemic in our culture, especially

  420. amongst young people, which is crazy.

  421. So I just wanna get your

  422. attention with the ED comment.

  423. Thought I would.

  424. So let's talk for just a second about

  425. these two ideas, escapism and distraction.

  426. Right?

  427. What's, what's escapism?

  428. Well, escapism is I just

  429. want to get out, right?

  430. I just gotta get out.

  431. And all too often, as followers of

  432. Jesus, we're put in environments and

  433. situations where we're supposed to grow,

  434. bring impact, honor him, show people

  435. something they haven't seen before.

  436. All kinds of things.

  437. And we worship escapism.

  438. There is a move within our

  439. culture to just get out.

  440. Out of our circumstances, out of our

  441. situations, out of hard things, outta

  442. difficult things, we avoid it like

  443. crazy and we spiritualize it too, right?

  444. We're like, if it's hard, god's not in it.

  445. That's like the opposite

  446. of what God does, right?

  447. Like he lets us walk through hard

  448. things for our growth and for

  449. all kinds of important eternal

  450. things that really matter.

  451. Do you know who greases the slides and

  452. lets you walk down this big wide easy road

  453. where people are hitting beach balls in

  454. the air and having a good time the wide.

  455. Wide road.

  456. You know where it leads

  457. death and destruction.

  458. Jesus warned us about that.

  459. Do you know what he said?

  460. Come walk the narrow road.

  461. It's tricky.

  462. It's hard to navigate.

  463. It's difficult.

  464. Few find it.

  465. It's tough.

  466. It's not easy.

  467. And somehow in our modern Christian

  468. world, we're like, easy equals God.

  469. Hard equals mm. Devil

  470. don't do hard things.

  471. And I would challenge you, man.

  472. It's probably the

  473. flip-flop inverse of that.

  474. The harder it is, maybe

  475. the more god's in it.

  476. The easier it is.

  477. Maybe you need to be like one of those

  478. westerns, right, where you're like,

  479. seems a little too easy.

  480. I'm just kidding.

  481. That's stupid.

  482. All right, moving on.

  483. Uh, escapism.

  484. Just get out and then

  485. distraction what distraction is.

  486. Do anything else?

  487. Do anything else.

  488. Right.

  489. We love to escape.

  490. We love to get out and if we can't

  491. get out, we love to do anything else.

  492. Right.

  493. Besides what we should be doing, um,

  494. Jamie thinks I have undiagnosed adult.

  495. A DHD.

  496. I don't see it.

  497. I don't see it at all.

  498. Stop nodding your heads.

  499. This is not an amen moment.

  500. I'm just saying, uh, I'm super

  501. good at finding all the other elses

  502. that could be attended to besides

  503. the thing I need to be doing.

  504. Right.

  505. That's pretty easy for me.

  506. Anything else?

  507. Jamie and I were talking yesterday,

  508. uh, she was reading a little

  509. article from a lady who was in

  510. Iran doing some mission work.

  511. And she came home and it was really

  512. intense where, you know, fearing for your

  513. life, a lot of persecution and having

  514. to be super careful, all this stuff.

  515. And, uh, she was talking and the

  516. interviewer was talking to her, that man,

  517. doesn't it feel good to be here where it's

  518. safe and kind of outta that environment

  519. and you can kind of just breathe.

  520. And she said, act actually,

  521. no, uh, I hate it here.

  522. This is way harder.

  523. She said, there are way

  524. too many distractions here.

  525. To try to serve the Lord.

  526. I don't know.

  527. This is too hard.

  528. And I thought, poof.

  529. That's legit.

  530. Huh?

  531. I don't know.

  532. Um, I, I don't know if you're

  533. like me, I feel like I have to

  534. have my phone on like twenty four

  535. seven 'cause I'm a pastor, right?

  536. What if somebody needs me?

  537. Unfortunately, or fortunately I

  538. don't get calls 24 7 of MI of Crisis.

  539. Do you know what I do get?

  540. I get ESPN updates 24 7 and MMA fights

  541. that I don't even know why they're there.

  542. 'cause I don't like MMA, right?

  543. I don't even know what's going.

  544. My phone comes after me all the time.

  545. I don't know how many conversations

  546. I've started with my wife about how

  547. to maybe adjust some things in our

  548. life to be a better husband and to

  549. create a better environment and.

  550. Dude, I turn and look

  551. and she's on her phone.

  552. 'cause there's been an important text.

  553. I mean, I wasn't on my phone, right?

  554. Or wait, no, maybe, I can't remember.

  555. Anyways, we're all distracted.

  556. Distraction, distraction, distraction.

  557. I've been talking about like, hey,

  558. maybe I need to do like a phone fast,

  559. or maybe I lock in my phone for a

  560. certain time of day and then people

  561. are like, Hey, we're in the hospital.

  562. We're dying.

  563. Could you pray with us?

  564. I'm like, sorry bro.

  565. I didn't get my, didn't get the message.

  566. You know?

  567. That's what the devil tells me,

  568. so I better keep my phone on.

  569. Right?

  570. It's crazy.

  571. Jamie and I were talking about,

  572. Hey, what if we looked at an hour

  573. and we said like, God gets 10%.

  574. So maybe what we should do is start

  575. relegating percentages of hour, maybe

  576. the first 10 minutes of every hour, my

  577. phone's active and on, and the rest of

  578. the time it's silenced and put away.

  579. And I check it every top

  580. of the hour for 10 minutes.

  581. That's it.

  582. Boom.

  583. And that's what that space gets,

  584. so that the rest of my life

  585. gets to the other 50 minutes.

  586. Now, I don't know if that's a

  587. good idea somebody came up with

  588. or if it's a terrible idea.

  589. I'm just broadcasting.

  590. I don't really know.

  591. I'm just saying the struggle is real.

  592. The distractions are everywhere.

  593. I mean, right now you guys are sitting

  594. here trying to talk about some really

  595. important stuff from God's word, and you

  596. got phones that are buzzing and jiggling

  597. and you got, you know, a thought that

  598. pops in your head about a really cool

  599. marketing campaign that Keynes is doing

  600. where you can get some free chicken.

  601. Like there's just stuff, right?

  602. It's just everywhere.

  603. Josh.

  604. Stop thinking about that, bro.

  605. Alright.

  606. Everywhere.

  607. Everywhere, right?

  608. Lemme just encourage you that if

  609. you're trying to follow Jesus.

  610. Do you know who even more

  611. than your own sinful flesh

  612. wants you to do anything else?

  613. Man, the devil does, doesn't he?

  614. Remember we talked about living on a

  615. prayer a couple weeks ago and the idea

  616. that it's really hard to pray in large

  617. part because the devil would rather

  618. you get distracted with anything else

  619. than go to the epic source of power.

  620. That can change all of eternity in

  621. people's lives, in the situations

  622. and circumstances that are hard

  623. and we're just trying to get

  624. out of, 'cause we wanna escape.

  625. Now, I'm not saying we don't

  626. live with some balance.

  627. I'm not saying there's not Sabbath,

  628. there is, but man, be careful and if you

  629. need to go see a somebody about your ED

  630. problem, get that taken care of because

  631. we're supposed to be always sober minded.

  632. And then just to make sure we didn't miss

  633. it, Paul's really gracious to say, oh,

  634. hey, and by the way, endure suffering.

  635. Right?

  636. I'm like, oh, wait, wait, wait, wait.

  637. Sober minded, always watchful.

  638. What about when it's hard?

  639. Oh yeah.

  640. Endure suffering.

  641. This is actually, if you go to

  642. those, um, special workshops that

  643. help you grow a church, this is how

  644. you build an amazing megachurch.

  645. You just talk about suffering and

  646. you preach about it endlessly.

  647. And how Jesus said, take up

  648. your cross and follow me.

  649. And in this life you will have

  650. trouble and you're gonna suffer.

  651. People cannot get enough of it.

  652. I'm just saying.

  653. Sarcasm.

  654. Those sarcasm.

  655. And if you guys like that, that

  656. makes me a little concerned.

  657. I don't like to suffer.

  658. I don't want to suffer.

  659. Jesus is getting ready to go to the

  660. cross and he's praying, God, father,

  661. is there any way out of this thing?

  662. Right?

  663. Because I don't wanna go through it.

  664. Nobody wants to suffer, right?

  665. But when we try to suffer or when we walk

  666. through suffering, God has purpose in it.

  667. I'm sure you've heard this.

  668. Romans five, three through four

  669. helps very clearly lay out sort of

  670. a strategy to it all that God maybe

  671. lets us look behind the curtain.

  672. Not only that, but we

  673. rejoice in our sufferings.

  674. We celebrate, yay, yay.

  675. I tried this when I was doing

  676. construction in college.

  677. I started like when

  678. I'd hit my hand with a.

  679. A hammer, you know, which was more often

  680. than probably should have been the case.

  681. I would say Thank you, Jesus.

  682. Thank you.

  683. Thank you that I hit my hand.

  684. Thank you.

  685. It was a total lie, but I was

  686. trying really hard to make myself

  687. have a good attitude and rejoice

  688. even when things were hard, right?

  689. I also hoped it would translate

  690. into me not hitting myself.

  691. It didn't work.

  692. It just kept happening.

  693. So maybe God was like, this is good, Andy.

  694. Let's build on this, right?

  695. It's hard to celebrate in our

  696. sufferings, but here's the purpose in it.

  697. We celebrate because we know

  698. God's at work, because suffering.

  699. See, we know, right?

  700. We know.

  701. We don't guess.

  702. We're not wondering.

  703. We're not hoping.

  704. We know that that suffering that God's

  705. allowing us to walk through is producing

  706. something in us called endurance or

  707. perseverance, so that we can keep stay.

  708. Because here's the deal, guys.

  709. Jesus said, in this life

  710. you're gonna have trouble.

  711. Life is hard.

  712. There's gonna be hard things that happen.

  713. There's gonna be cancer,

  714. there's gonna be death.

  715. Everybody's gonna experience it.

  716. And we've been fed this line that, man,

  717. if you come to Jesus, you get abundant

  718. life here in a fallen world without any

  719. pain, suffering, difficulty, or hardship.

  720. It's just not what the Bible teaches.

  721. Now, is there an eternity that's

  722. epic and ridiculous and beyond

  723. comprehension that makes everything.

  724. Totally just pale in comparison to that.

  725. Yes.

  726. That's the only reason we can keep going.

  727. Right?

  728. But the truth is, life is hard

  729. and difficult, and sometimes

  730. we wanna avoid that, right?

  731. But as we press into that space and say,

  732. I trust God in the midst of it, he's

  733. building muscle memory and strength and

  734. stamina to keep standing when it's hard.

  735. And that is critical, right?

  736. It's critical not only for your

  737. own spiritual life so that you

  738. don't fall away and give up and

  739. throw in the talent and quit.

  740. That other people around you can see.

  741. Nobody is impressed when a Christian

  742. drives in with a super epic car and

  743. smoking hot wife and amazing kids that

  744. listen and they wave and people are

  745. like, man, it's so good to follow Jesus.

  746. No, people are not impressed with that.

  747. People are impressed with everybody

  748. who's trying to, trying to make it and

  749. facing hard things and difficult things,

  750. but still says, Hey, God is good, and

  751. I trust him even in the hard stuff.

  752. That's where the power is of

  753. the gospel man and our witness.

  754. And we gotta lean into that space.

  755. 'cause God needs us to

  756. be people who endure.

  757. And this world's gonna get darker.

  758. And it's gonna get harder.

  759. And if God's people can't stand and now

  760. if God can stand it, sorry, I was lame.

  761. Alright.

  762. And that endurance is

  763. produced in character in us.

  764. Right.

  765. It's not just actions of pers.

  766. I'm not just somebody who

  767. occasionally perseveres.

  768. I'm not just an endurer sometimes.

  769. This is, this is the character of my life.

  770. I'm somebody who doesn't quit.

  771. I'm somebody who stands.

  772. I'm somebody who endures.

  773. I'm somebody who does not give way.

  774. That's character.

  775. And God is building that in us, and

  776. as he does that, it produces hope.

  777. Like legit hope, like it's gonna be okay.

  778. 'cause no matter what comes, God has

  779. built me to be able to stand and his

  780. goodness is greater than whatever

  781. this world is thrown at me, right?

  782. He has purpose in enduring suffering.

  783. So watch, pay attention, be

  784. engaged, endure, persevere.

  785. And then this one is interesting,

  786. do the work of an evangelist.

  787. Hey, Becca, come here real quick.

  788. Would you, uh, I love bringing my

  789. family up here and giving them a

  790. chance to just be part of the fun.

  791. And you might've been here a few

  792. months ago when Josiah and Becca's

  793. relationship was on the rocks

  794. and I brought her up because.

  795. If you're gonna be in my family, yes.

  796. I love you.

  797. Okay?

  798. If you're gonna be in my family,

  799. you just gotta be part of the fun.

  800. And you thought announcements

  801. was enough, but you did such a

  802. great job with the announcements.

  803. I was like, she wants more.

  804. Did you guys feel that too?

  805. She wants more.

  806. See, see, they know it.

  807. They know too.

  808. Okay.

  809. I may or may not have, uh, thrown

  810. you under the bus about pronouncing

  811. some Greek words, but this word

  812. evangelist in the Greek is this.

  813. And we'll give it a shot for us, please.

  814. Well, I know the beginning.

  815. Which is you and Kelly.

  816. Stu would be my guess at the end.

  817. Yeah.

  818. Lease days least.

  819. Sure.

  820. Team it up together.

  821. Yeah.

  822. Perfect.

  823. Hey.

  824. All right.

  825. Dip around.

  826. Plus my future daughter-in-law.

  827. Thank you.

  828. Good job.

  829. Good job.

  830. Gotta find a new bit.

  831. No, no, I like it.

  832. I'm gonna run that one into the ground.

  833. Um.

  834. Plus, Becca told me I'm not invited

  835. to the wedding anyhow, so that's cool.

  836. It's gonna be great.

  837. Hey, this is a crazy big word and I

  838. thought of you the minute I saw it, Becca.

  839. 'cause Josiah and Becca like to get

  840. into the Greek and have some fun SOEs.

  841. I don't really know if that's the

  842. Indiana pronunciation or what,

  843. but this word evangelist has this

  844. idea of being a Proclaimer, right?

  845. A herald.

  846. Harolds of salvation through Christ.

  847. Harolds you.

  848. Anybody name Harold here?

  849. No.

  850. Okay.

  851. Hey, uh, a Harold, you might

  852. recognize it's this time of year

  853. where we talk about these guys Hark.

  854. You remember him?

  855. He was one of the Herald angels.

  856. Har the Harold.

  857. Angel sings Harold.

  858. What do they do?

  859. They proclaim right?

  860. And Jesus has called his people

  861. to be Harold's and Proclaimers.

  862. Would you just turn the person

  863. next to you and say, hi, Harold.

  864. Go ahead.

  865. Be good.

  866. Hi Harold.

  867. Ken, why did you just glare your husband?

  868. That's weird, right?

  869. That that was good.

  870. Dan, I appreciate you, Dan.

  871. Just committed right off the bat.

  872. That's, that's beautiful.

  873. I am not Harold, and if you

  874. call me Harold, you'll be, yeah.

  875. Anyways.

  876. Alright, so God has called us

  877. to do the work of an evangelist,

  878. and what is that message?

  879. It's.

  880. To be someone who's a proclaimer of

  881. the gospel, who shares the good news

  882. of Jesus, who teaches, who speaks,

  883. who shares, who proclaims, right?

  884. And it got me thinking about this

  885. question, what are you proclaiming

  886. when you look at your life?

  887. You look at what you're doing.

  888. What are you proclaiming with your mouth?

  889. What are you proclaiming?

  890. You might be proclaiming that

  891. it's time for, uh, running

  892. back to win the MVP award.

  893. I don't know.

  894. Maybe that's what you're proclaiming.

  895. You might be proclaiming that

  896. the stuff of this world is really

  897. valuable and matters, and I need to

  898. chase after it with all my heart.

  899. You might be proclaiming

  900. injustice and victimization.

  901. You might be proclaiming

  902. just how miserable life is

  903. and the circumstances stink.

  904. You might be broke.

  905. I mean, there's a billion

  906. things fill in the blank.

  907. What are you proclaiming?

  908. Oh, and just in case you were like,

  909. well, I don't really say a lot

  910. of negative stuff, that's cool.

  911. Uh, what are you proclaiming

  912. with your life, your actions?

  913. Because here's the little

  914. secret about heralds.

  915. I dunno if you know a lot about

  916. heralds, but here's the secret.

  917. Your heralding something, everybody

  918. is the words of your mouth.

  919. The actions of your life are proclaiming

  920. what matters, what's important.

  921. What you value, what you think

  922. truth is, you're a proclaimer Jen.

  923. Even if you don't like

  924. it, you're a herald.

  925. And I'm sorry.

  926. We are all heralds and this

  927. scripture calls us to be people.

  928. Thanks to my daughter-in-law's

  929. Greek breakdown that herald

  930. the gospel of Jesus Christ, the

  931. truth of salvation through Jesus.

  932. So I don't know what you're

  933. proclaiming, but I would encourage

  934. you that as a follower of Jesus.

  935. Some of the words from your mouth and

  936. some of the actions of your life need

  937. to be saying to the world around you.

  938. Jesus is, Lord Jesus

  939. offers us hope and life.

  940. I wanna talk to you in my words and my

  941. actions about salvation through Jesus.

  942. And then this cool phrase, fulfill

  943. your ministry, this word fulfill.

  944. It's, it's really, it's cute and it's

  945. little and it's sweet and it just means.

  946. To carry through to the end,

  947. to carry through to the end.

  948. God has called his people to fulfill,

  949. to carry through to the end their

  950. ministry, and you'd be like, sweet.

  951. Another spot I don't have to pay

  952. attention to, not a minister.

  953. Oh, but here's the problem.

  954. This word ministry is really

  955. just about service and God has

  956. called you to be a minister.

  957. In your family, in your friend groups,

  958. in your communities, he's called you

  959. to serve the least of these, to serve

  960. those who are sick and in prison, who are

  961. poor, who are marginalized, the people

  962. who are cruel and mean your enemies.

  963. He's called you to serve them all,

  964. to be a minister to them all, and

  965. as a follower of Jesus Christ, we're

  966. called to carry out through the end.

  967. This service, this loving our neighbor,

  968. this ministry that God's called us to.

  969. We gotta endure.

  970. We gotta stand and we gotta carry on.

  971. Paul wraps up this thought with this

  972. cool phrase that we all probably have

  973. heard the, I'm sorry for, I'm already

  974. being poured out like a drink offering,

  975. and the time of my departure has come.

  976. He says, man, I've been emptied.

  977. Poured out for the sake of the gospel.

  978. And you know Paul's not a bitter old

  979. man saying, dang it, I'm all used up.

  980. He said, woo hoo, bout empty.

  981. This is the one time you can

  982. be like glass half empty.

  983. Let's go Paul.

  984. Good job.

  985. Right?

  986. Because he was allowing himself to be

  987. poured out for purpose and for meaning.

  988. And he says, I've fought the good fight.

  989. I've finished the race.

  990. I've kept the faith.

  991. And there is now stored

  992. up for me in heaven.

  993. Pretty epic treasure, right crown of

  994. righteousness, and it's available for you.

  995. But as for you, always be sober minded.

  996. Lock in, engage, watch.

  997. No numbing out, no escapism.

  998. No distraction is lock in.

  999. Work hard at it.

1000. Build things into your life that

1001. help you walk in that way and

1002. be prepared and continue in hard

  1003. things and difficult circumstances.

1004. 'cause God is not abandoning you.

1005. He is at work and he is building

1006. significant things for eternity that

1007. we can't see in their fullness now.

1008. But he has great purpose in it.

1009. And be a proclaimer of the good news.

  1010. You got a mouth.

1011. You got body parts, put 'em to use,

1012. sharing the love of Jesus with the

1013. people around you and don't quit.

1014. Carry it through to the end.

1015. God has called you to ministry and to

1016. service in his kingdom and to the world

1017. around us, in your family, and everywhere.

  1018. So carry on.

1019. You don't have to keep

  1020. calm, just carry on.

1021. 'cause God's at work and the

  1022. attorney's gonna look different.

1023. If we become people who walk this way

1024. through whatever he calls us to walk in.

  1025. Let's pray.

1026. Father, thank you for hijacking a lame

1027. classic rock sermon to share your eternal

1028. truth and encourage our hearts, Lord,

1029. you know where people are walking.

1030. You know the circumstances, the things

1031. people want to avoid and escape from,

1032. you know, the distractions in our life.

1033. You know, how badly we would

1034. prefer not to endure hard things.

1035. Please help us, give us perspective and

1036. give us courage to keep pressing on and to

1037. not abandon our post, and not to give up,

1038. but to fulfill what you've called us to.

1039. And part of that calling God is to be

1040. a proclaimer who shares the eternal

1041. hope of Jesus with people around us.

1042. So help us to do that in love

1043. and in gentleness and respect,

1044. but help us not shrink back.

1045. We wanna be able, at the end of our

1046. days, like Paul did say, we got poured

1047. out for something greater than us.

1048. We got used up for the, the beauty of

1049. eternal impact in the kingdom of God.

1050. And we finish the race well

  1051. and we receive.
