  1. Thank you guys.

  2. Man,

  3. I, I was just telling somebody,

  4. Clayton, I, I forgot about standing

  5. in the hospital room, praying for

  6. hours with your parents and not having

  7. any idea if you were gonna make it.

  8. And, uh.

  9. And then here you are today

  10. totally stealing some of the sermon

  11. that I was gonna preach during

  12. sharing time, which is, it's just

  13. pretty cool to watch God at work.

  14. Uh, it's Valentine's Day weekend

  15. and, uh, several people have

  16. asked who's preaching today?

  17. And I'm like, well,

  18. actually I'm gonna do it.

  19. And, uh, lemme be real honest, I know

  20. you're not supposed to steal in the Bible,

  21. but I saw an opportunity to say to all

  22. the other guys who are still lined up to

  23. preach, you know, it's Valentine's Day.

  24. You should probably focus

  25. on your wife this weekend.

  26. I'll go ahead and preach for you.

  27. So I kind of snagged this one.

  28. Uh, but it's largely important because I

  29. have some stuff I really wanted to share.

  30. I feel like God's really pressed on my

  31. heart and, uh, some guys were generous

  32. to kind of keep rolling a little bit.

  33. Um, so the love of God, right?

  34. How crazy.

  35. The truth is this, right?

  36. That we love because he first loved us.

  37. There is no love in us

  38. that somehow we bring.

  39. To God and wow him with what we have.

  40. No, he loved us while we were at sinners,

  41. while we were a mess, while we're walking

  42. in rebellion and sin and disobedience.

  43. He came and he died and he

  44. offered opportunity for us.

  45. And even when we're running from him,

  46. he still pursues us unconditionally

  47. to the very gates of hell to say,

  48. come, come be in relationship.

  49. Come be restored.

  50. Come find life from death.

  51. Right?

  52. That's incredible.

  53. Love that God has for us.

  54. And I this morning, I, my heart's

  55. definitely full and you guys have

  56. already got some great sermons out, some

  57. people, so this is just sort of some,

  58. you know, a filler to get us through to

  59. the end of the, the morning together.

  60. But I have some important stuff I want to

  61. talk to you about on this Valentine's Day.

  62. I don't know if you get these or not.

  63. These are, uh, Valentine's Day cards.

  64. Raise your hand if you, if

  65. you got one from somebody.

  66. Nice.

  67. Very, very nice.

  68. Jamie and I are notorious.

  69. You know, listen, genetically, I

  70. come from a family where my father

  71. and mother would go to the Hallmark

  72. store, I don't know if they have those

  73. anymore, and they'd pick out a card for

  74. each other and they'd exchange it and

  75. they'd read it, and those cheap folks

  76. would put their card back and walk out.

  77. It was a really, I mean, that's

  78. the legacy I learned, right?

  79. So, so I try to tell my wife I have

  80. more integrity than my parents, Jamie.

  81. I'm not going to steal a Valentine's Day.

  82. I'm just not gonna give you a card.

  83. That way.

  84. It's all, you know, I don't know.

  85. If you celebrate Valentine's Day,

  86. it gets a little sketchy, right?

  87. It feels kind of trumped up and,

  88. and, uh, the Valentine's thing was

  89. awesome the other night, ladies.

  90. That was super cool.

  91. And, and there's all this

  92. pressure though, on, on February.

  93. 14th.

  94. Okay.

  95. See, I don't even know the date.

  96. February 14th.

  97. Right.

  98. To to show your sweetheart

  99. that you love her.

  100. Jamie and I had this conversation

  101. a few years ago and she's

  102. like, let's not do anything.

  103. Right.

  104. Let's just not, because it

  105. feels so commercialized.

  106. We love each other.

  107. We'll find time, whatever.

  108. But just no gifts, nothing like that.

  109. Let's No.

  110. Right.

  111. And I was like, for real?

  112. She's like, for real.

  113. Like for real, for real.

  114. Yep.

  115. It's great.

  116. It was very clear.

  117. I do not often listen well to my wife.

  118. I listened really well

  119. on those instructions.

  120. I just want you to know, so Valentine's

  121. Day comes and mid-morning, maybe

  122. it was the afternoon, she hands me

  123. a card and I'm like, what is this?

  124. And she's like, well, we can do cards.

  125. And I was like, that's not

  126. the definition of nothing.

  127. Right, right.

  128. So.

  129. Evidently I learned a

  130. very valuable lesson.

  131. But it's kind of cool to get

  132. a card from somebody that they

  133. wrote in or that they made.

  134. 'cause they, they want to communicate,

  135. you know, value and love and appreciation.

  136. That's kind of a sweet thing, right?

  137. When you're in elementary school,

  138. it's awkward 'cause you know

  139. somebody's probably making a play.

  140. And what does it mean

  141. when it's high school?

  142. You're finding a way to try to use

  143. Valentine's Day to finally tell

  144. that special someone, something that

  145. they may or may not want to hear.

  146. But we all appreciate the thoughtfulness

  147. of a Valentine's Day card and this

  148. Valentine's weekend here, I wanna take

  149. you over to a Valentine's Day card that

  150. Jesus wrote, and it's really a sweet

  151. card and it, it says some really touching

  152. things about how much he loves us.

  153. He says, dear Ephesus,

  154. will you be my Valentine?

  155. It's a loose translation.

  156. I apologize.

  157. Over in Revelation chapter two verses

  158. one through five, and it's actually

  159. to, uh, the church in Ephesus.

  160. But as with every letter to every church

  161. in the New Testament, the intention was

  162. that the church of Jesus Christ would

  163. read here and understand the message.

  164. Right?

  165. So this morning I wanna take you over to

  166. Revelation chapter two, and we're gonna

  167. spend a few minutes unpacking this really

  168. sweet Valentine that the Lord gave to the

  169. church in Ephesus first, and then to you.

  170. And to me.

  171. It says this Chapter two verse one, to

  172. the angel of the church in Ephesus write,

  173. these are the words of him who holds

  174. the seven stars in his right hand and

  175. walks among the seven golden lamp stands.

  176. We don't really know exactly that

  177. imagery, what it all means, but wow.

  178. It definitely means

  179. like this is him, right?

  180. The younger generation, we got into that,

  181. you know, he's him kind of vibe, right?

  182. But this is the alpha, the

  183. omega, the beginning, the

  184. end, the Lord of all creation.

  185. The one on whose thi is written,

  186. king of kings and Lord of Lords,

  187. who will rule forever like this

  188. is no one to be trifled with.

  189. And he writes these words or records

  190. these words for the church in Ephesus.

  191. He says this, I know your deeds, your

  192. hard work, and your perseverance.

  193. I know that you cannot

  194. tolerate wicked people, right?

  195. That you have tested those who

  196. claim to be apostles and are not

  197. and have found them to be false.

  198. You've persevered and have

  199. endured hardship for my name

  200. and have not grown weary.

  201. What a cool thing for Jesus

  202. to say to his people, right?

  203. I know your deeds.

  204. I know what you're doing.

  205. I see the actions of your life.

  206. I see the works.

  207. I see the deeds that you're busy doing.

  208. I see it.

  209. I see it.

  210. I know your hard work, not your

  211. laziness, not your lack of effort.

  212. I know your hard work, the effort that

  213. you're putting in, I see it and I know it.

  214. I know how you're pressing in

  215. and persevering and continuing.

  216. Right?

  217. I see it.

  218. I know that you can't tolerate wicked

  219. people, that you're not okay with evil

  220. and wickedness and that it makes you

  221. act and it makes you take a stand.

  222. I see all of that.

  223. I, I recognize your commitment

  224. to righteousness over wickedness.

  225. I recognize that you've tested those

  226. who claim to be apostles, but they're

  227. not, and you've found them false.

  228. I see.

  229. And I know that you stand on truth

  230. and you fight for truth, and you

  231. don't listen to stuff that is

  232. dishonest or lies or deception.

  233. Not just wickedness, but man, anything

  234. close, you are standing on the truth.

  235. You've persevered.

  236. You've endured hardship for my name,

  237. standing up as a follower of Jesus

  238. and faced ridicule and difficulty.

  239. And in all of it, you haven't grown weary.

  240. You haven't run outta gas.

  241. You haven't quit throwing up

  242. your hands and said, I'm out.

  243. What a cool encouragement

  244. from Jesus to his church.

  245. Man, I see what you're doing.

  246. I see how hard you're working.

  247. I see the stands that you're taking.

  248. I see all of the deeds

  249. and actions of your life.

  250. Whew.

  251. That is encouraging stuff from the Lord.

  252. And if we could stop there, be amazing.

  253. And I would say Happy Valentine's Day.

  254. But Jesus didn't stop there.

  255. He said this, yet, I

  256. hold this against you.

  257. All your hard work, all your effort,

  258. all your deeds, all your actions,

  259. all of the things that you're doing.

  260. I see it.

  261. I know it.

  262. I'm watching, but I hold this against you.

  263. You have forsaken your first love.

  264. You have forsaken the love

  265. that you had at first.

  266. Consider how far you have fallen and

  267. repent and do the things you did at first.

  268. And Jesus isn't messing around all these

  269. deeds, all these acts, all this stuff.

  270. He goes on to say, if you don't

  271. repent, I'll come to you and I'll

  272. remove the lampstand from its place.

  273. All these deeds, all these acts,

  274. all this stuff that looks so much

  275. like a follower of Jesus Christ.

  276. And Jesus says, you

  277. forsaken your love for me.

  278. I thought what Clayton

  279. said was pretty beautiful.

  280. Our hearts so hard towards God,

  281. and that's the very thing that

  282. our Valentine wants is our heart.

  283. He teaches us to tithe with our money.

  284. Why?

  285. So that he can know

  286. that he owns our heart.

  287. He teaches us to serve others

  288. selflessly and love our enemies.

  289. Why?

  290. So that he knows he has our heart

  291. to give, to serve, to sacrifice

  292. that comes from the heart.

  293. And Jesus to the church in

  294. Ephesus says, you're doing all

  295. kinds of stuff but your heart.

  296. Your heart is not with me anymore.

  297. All these religious actions, all

  298. this spiritual discipline looking

  299. stuff, all these motions of

  300. spirituality, but I know your heart.

  301. The Pharisees thought they

  302. could look good, right?

  303. And stand out there.

  304. And Jesus said, Hey, I don't care

  305. about the outside of the cup.

  306. You can make that thing look as

  307. nice as you want, but inside's

  308. full of dead man's bones.

  309. It's filthy and it's dirty.

  310. First clean the inside of the cup,

  311. right, and then the outside of the

  312. cup, it's gonna take care of itself.

  313. This scripture reminds me of what Jesus

  314. says over in Matthew chapter seven, when

  315. he is talking about these people who

  316. do all this stuff, and yet he doesn't

  317. know him On Judgment Day, Jesus said,

  318. many will come to me and they'll say,

  319. Lord, Lord, we prophesied in your name.

  320. We cast out demons in your name.

  321. We perform many miracles in your name.

  322. We did all this stuff.

  323. That was so religious in your name.

  324. And he says, uh, but I'll reply.

  325. I never knew you depart from me.

  326. Get away breakers of God's law.

  327. Jesus wants a relationship with us.

  328. He desires not our service,

  329. not our acts of righteousness.

  330. He desires our heart.

  331. And guys he knows, he knows your

  332. heart and he speaks clearly that all

  333. these actions and all this pomp and

  334. circumstance and all this show out here

  335. that looks like righteousness and checks

  336. all the boxes I need to check to be

  337. a Christian man prophesying in Jesus'

  338. name, casting out demons in Jesus' name.

  339. That sounds like pretty

  340. legit stuff, doesn't it?

  341. But Jesus says those things.

  342. Those things don't get you into

  343. eternal life and into heaven.

  344. A relationship with me that's

  345. authentic and genuine, and a heart,

  346. a heart committed and devoted to me,

  347. that's what we're chasing, right?

  348. It's an interesting, uh, picture this

  349. forsaken in the Greek, the word literally

  350. is abandoned, that you have abandoned

  351. your heart relationship with the Lord.

  352. Scripture says, in the end time,

  353. the love of most will grow cold.

  354. And guys, I don't know about your

  355. Valentine's vibe, but like it takes work

  356. to be in a relationship with my wife.

  357. She's amazing and she has to

  358. work 20 times harder than I do.

  359. But the truth is, it takes effort

  360. and energy, time, energy, resources,

  361. commitment to spend and invest.

  362. And if we don't do that.

  363. Man, we can begin to let our love

  364. grow cold towards one another.

  365. And man, this, it's not complicated.

  366. Jesus offers us relationship with him, but

  367. that relationship requires time, energy,

  368. resource focus, energy investment from us.

  369. He's right there and he

  370. loves us and he invites us.

  371. But there are some things we get busy

  372. doing to look like we're a good husband

  373. or a good wife in our relationship.

  374. And the connection at a heart level

  375. with our spouse totally absent and we

  376. know it, and we can do the exact same

  377. thing in our relationship with Christ.

  378. He called out the church in

  379. Ephesus for abandoning the

  380. word left or gone away from.

  381. It's the same word actually for

  382. divorce, that you have severed

  383. your relationship and left desolate

  384. and gone on to your own agenda.

  385. Onto your own stuff.

  386. That's the picture here that Jesus

  387. calls out the church an Ephesus.

  388. Who do you love?

  389. What do you love?

  390. That's really the question for us.

  391. Now, James, who is known for delicate

  392. sensitivity in what he shares,

  393. kind of lays this out in a way.

  394. I think that's really helpful.

  395. And it may be too gentle for you,

  396. so just try to look a little deeper

  397. if it, if it hits you too soft.

  398. But he says this, he says, you

  399. adulterers, you adulterers people.

  400. Don't you realize that friendship with

  401. the world makes you an enemy of God?

  402. And let me say to you, uh,

  403. we don't believe that at all.

  404. And I'm not sure the early

  405. church believed it at all.

  406. So he said it again, I say it again.

  407. If you want to be a friend of the world,

  408. you make yourself an enemy of God.

  409. I don't mean you love mountains and trees.

  410. It simply means that the desires

  411. of the flesh and the sinful nature

  412. and chasing after the things of

  413. this world, we gotta make a choice.

  414. We gotta make a choice whether we're

  415. gonna choose Jesus with all our heart

  416. or whether we're gonna choose the world.

  417. And this language here is super strong.

  418. It says you're committing adultery

  419. in your relationship with the Lord.

  420. You're cheating on God with the world.

  421. You're choosing the harlett, the

  422. prostitute of the world, right?

  423. God's not playing games with it.

  424. He uses the imagery of the

  425. bride of Christ and covenant

  426. relationship where we're committed.

  427. And he says, you are in

  428. violation of that with me.

  429. See, here's the thing about God.

  430. He loves us.

  431. He wants a relationship with us.

  432. He cares about us, but he is not

  433. interested in sharing our relationship

  434. status with everybody else around us.

  435. He wants a relationship with you.

  436. Lemme see if this makes sense.

  437. Um, if your wife guys gave you a

  438. Valentine's Day card filled with respect

  439. and honor, how much you're cherished

  440. and how proud she is to wear your last

  441. name and to be your wife, dude, that

  442. would hit, that would be like, let's go.

  443. Right?

  444. But then if she gave that

  445. same card to seven other guys,

  446. it would be meaningless for sure, but

  447. it would also be really destructive

  448. in that relationship, right?

  449. Listen guys, as, as mean as this

  450. sounds, we've raised generations of

  451. followers of Jesus Christ in America

  452. who believe that we do not have to be

  453. sold out and committed to the Lord.

  454. We can do our sin.

  455. We can do what we want.

  456. We can please the flesh and still do some

  457. churchy stuff and God's good with it.

  458. We can still go to church and sing

  459. and praise him and feel bad about

  460. it, and then go do whatever we

  461. want to do and God doesn't care.

  462. That's a lie.

  463. That's not biblical.

  464. You can hear it in a million churches

  465. in America, but it's not biblical.

  466. It's not the truth that Jesus spoke to us.

  467. He says, repent, right?

  468. Repent.

  469. And we talk about it a lot.

  470. Repentance is, I'm walking

  471. this way 180 degrees.

  472. I turn and walk the other direction.

  473. That's the biblical word for repent.

  474. It means a change of behavior, a

  475. change of heart, a change of action.

  476. Everything follows it.

  477. You cannot walk in sin, live in

  478. sin, choose to be sinful, and it

  479. doesn't matter and God doesn't care.

  480. And my relationship with Jesus

  481. is fine and I'm all good to go.

  482. We have this ridiculous version of

  483. grace that we believe in in this country

  484. that God's grace covers all of my sin.

  485. Truth.

  486. Yes.

  487. God's grace doesn't give me license to

  488. continue in sin and to be a child of

  489. the devil, rather being a child of the

  490. king, we make choices that are critical

  491. and they cost us for all eternity.

  492. And we've, we've grown up in

  493. this world, where're like,

  494. yeah, it doesn't really matter.

  495. Do whatever you want to do, guys.

  496. That's not true.

  497. It's just not true.

  498. We have teenagers who are just

  499. trained, like, I go to church, hang

  500. out, sing some good songs, but you

  501. know, you're just gonna, you're

  502. just gonna sin all the time anyhow.

  503. So what difference does it really make?

  504. Do you know that God hates sin, but

  505. beyond just his, like, sin is bad.

  506. I can't, I just don't, I don't like it.

  507. Right?

  508. He can't even be around sin.

  509. So just do the math in that.

  510. If he can't associate with us because our

  511. decision to be in willful disobedience

  512. and rebellion to him, he can't just

  513. be an intimate relationship with

  514. us because of our choices for sin.

  515. Through the blood of Jesus, we can get

  516. forgiveness and we can get a, a path back

  517. to relationship that could be restored.

  518. And it doesn't mean that we don't

  519. stumble and fall and make mistakes

  520. along the way, but if we choose to

  521. live an outright rebellion against

  522. what God has clearly said, we are

  523. making choices that maybe the church

  524. in Ephesus was struggling with, where

  525. they abandoned and they left and they

  526. walked away from what God had for them.

  527. Over in Matthew, Jesus has asked

  528. this question about, okay, so what's

  529. the most important stuff really?

  530. Right?

  531. Okay, I, I hear all these things,

  532. but what's the most important stuff

  533. in the commandments and the law?

  534. What's the most important?

  535. And Jesus replies this.

  536. He says, love the Lord your God with

  537. all your heart, your mind, your soul.

  538. And also in the book of, uh, mark,

  539. it adds strength in that gospel.

  540. This is the first and

  541. greatest commandment.

  542. Love God with everything you've got.

  543. A hundred percent sold out.

  544. God changed my heart.

  545. God, break my heart.

  546. God softened my heart.

  547. God, my heart needs to be, I mean, it's

  548. callous and it just needs to be just

  549. ripped or shreds, man, so I can be broken

  550. before you, everything I have, right?

  551. And the second is like it.

  552. Love your neighbor as yourself.

  553. And I was thinking about this

  554. a lot, how significant the

  555. chronological order of this is.

  556. This is really important.

  557. I think first thing over all things is

  558. to love God with everything we have.

  559. That's number one.

  560. Then, then once that's in its

  561. rightful place, we're ready to

  562. love our neighbor as ourself.

  563. But a lot of us go the other

  564. direction here and we're like,

  565. okay, this God, yeah, I love him.

  566. I'm good, but I'm just gonna do

  567. these actions of, of, of loving

  568. my neighbor as myself and trying

  569. to, to do all these things.

  570. But here's the problem.

  571. If we don't have self in the

  572. right place, in the right context.

  573. It's gonna subvert what God's at

  574. work doing here, and it's gonna

  575. get us going the wrong direction.

  576. Here's what I mean.

  577. I believe that self is the enemy of love.

  578. It's the enemy.

  579. It's the sworn enemy of love,

  580. our selfishness, our rebellion.

  581. If God is love and we struggle with

  582. the flesh, it's at odds, right?

  583. Self is at odds with the God of love.

  584. And we can look in scripture.

  585. We did this in my Bible class

  586. this week talking about the

  587. different angles that we see.

  588. Love unpacked in the New Testament.

  589. Takes a lot of words to even get close.

  590. 'cause God's love, he's complex, right?

  591. But arrows, which deals with

  592. romantic love, when we are in

  593. a romantic love relationship.

  594. When you get consumed with your own

  595. selfish desires and wants, how does

  596. that do for your whole romantic vibe?

  597. You and your spouse or your,

  598. your girlfriend or boyfriend

  599. or fiance or somebody?

  600. I mean, it doesn't work.

  601. Selfishness works against love

  602. in a romantic relationship, man.

  603. It's about serving and loving

  604. and sacrificing and giving.

  605. And when it's about me, man, it brings

  606. destruction into that relationship.

  607. We look at the word, uh,

  608. Alia for friendship, right?

  609. Philadelphia, the city of

  610. brotherly love, who Jesus all

  611. wrote a Valentine day too, right?

  612. Uh, card friendship.

  613. You know, when you get selfish in

  614. your friendships, it does a great

  615. thing for your friendships, right?

  616. It makes 'em deeper,

  617. stronger, more committed.

  618. Not at all.

  619. Not at all.

  620. It, it ruins them, right?

  621. Store gay.

  622. The word family love in the Greek, when

  623. mothers and daughters and dads and sons.

  624. And when there's all of this rivalry

  625. and selfish ambition within family, we

  626. see destruction everywhere When we're

  627. not committed to each other in sacrifice

  628. and in service, and in selflessness.

  629. And then we have this

  630. agape love, which is epic.

  631. It's God's unconditional love for

  632. us, which by definition doesn't have

  633. conditions and selfishness puts conditions

  634. into every relationship that we have.

  635. You're not doing enough for me.

  636. You're not doing what I need.

  637. I'm not getting what I want.

  638. That's not love.

  639. It's not biblical love.

  640. It's definitely Hollywood love.

  641. It's definitely Netflix love, but it's

  642. not the love that God teaches his people.

  643. Self is the enemy of love.

  644. And listen, you and I are in a generation

  645. that speaks about self love like crazy.

  646. And we say this, you

  647. need to love yourself.

  648. You need to love yourself.

  649. Can I say something biblically to you?

  650. No.

  651. You do not need to love yourself.

  652. No.

  653. You need to love God with everything

  654. you have and everything you are.

  655. And when you do love God, the context

  656. of self comes into focus, right?

  657. You can't hate yourself if you love

  658. God and you understand you're made

  659. in his image, created as his child.

  660. Define fulfillment and purpose and

  661. meaning in that context of relationship,

  662. that you have eternal value and that

  663. you matter, and all these physical

  664. surface level things are just immaterial.

  665. If you love God with everything

  666. you have, self comes completely

  667. into focus, as does loving your

  668. neighbor, as does loving your enemy.

  669. If you choose to love yourself first and

  670. try to be all about self love, you're

  671. gonna have a warped picture of what it

  672. even means to love someone as yourself.

  673. I'm a selfish person who

  674. does whatever I want.

  675. Well, I gotta do that for you so

  676. you get whatever you want, right?

  677. People who live in sin and choose

  678. sinful lifestyles and say, this is fine.

  679. God doesn't care.

  680. That results in eternal death, right?

  681. No sexually immoral person will

  682. enter the kingdom of heaven.

  683. God says it super clearly.

  684. That means adulterers, pornography crap.

  685. Uh, adultery within the context of

  686. marriage, homosexuality all sin outside

  687. of covenant marriage between one man,

  688. one woman clearly in scripture says,

  689. Hey, this path is death and destruction,

  690. but if we're loving ourself and we're

  691. about self-love, well, it's what I want.

  692. Well, this other person

  693. wants what they want.

  694. No, it never was about any of that.

  695. It was always about loving God first

  696. over everything else and submitting

  697. everything to him, fully surrender to him.

  698. And then in that context, everything

  699. else takes shape and makes sense to

  700. seek the Lord with everything that we

  701. have right to chase after him and his

  702. kingdom and his righteousness, and

  703. then everything else falls in line.

  704. But if we choose to get this

  705. outta order, man, we're a mess.

  706. We're supposed to seek him

  707. with all of our heart, right?

  708. Scripture has this picture of the

  709. center of all physical and spiritual

  710. life, everything about who we are.

  711. Your heart.

  712. It's got a hunger and

  713. thirst after righteousness.

  714. It's gotta chase after God.

  715. We want so many things, and if we're

  716. honest, man, we make a bullet list of the

  717. things that we want, that we long for.

  718. How many of them are are God or a deeper

  719. relationship with him or time with him?

  720. I bet most s that doesn't even

  721. make our list when people ask

  722. us, and yet God knows our heart.

  723. And he says, don't abandon, don't

  724. forsake, don't walk away, sell out.

  725. Come here where life exists and the

  726. path that leads to eternal life and

  727. opportunity is in this relationship.

  728. But you're gonna chase the stuff

  729. of this world, like James says.

  730. And man, you're gonna end up being

  731. a friend of the world and you're

  732. gonna have all the stuff the

  733. world offers, but in the end, it's

  734. gonna cost you your eternal soul.

  735. And Jesus loves you enough to

  736. say, Hey, choose that path.

  737. That's death.

  738. I don't care what it caught.

  739. Jesus said, Hey, it's better to

  740. cut off your right arm, right,

  741. or to poke out your right eye

  742. and make it into heaven than not.

  743. That's a pretty powerful picture of

  744. saying no to our flesh of repenting and

  745. turning and going a different direction.

  746. Even if we really, really want to do

  747. the sinful thing or the thing that God

  748. says we shouldn't do and can't do and

  749. gotta stay away from, oh, it's okay.

  750. He still loves me.

  751. Yes, he loves you.

  752. He loves you enough to tell you the

  753. truth, that if you keep doing it,

  754. eternal death, it's just simple.

  755. It's just simple with all of your soul.

  756. This is literally in the, in the Hebrew

  757. of the very breath of life within

  758. us, that which animates our flesh and

  759. our body and who we are as a person.

  760. Everything about us, our

  761. heart, our soul, our mind.

  762. This picture here is literally all

  763. of our understanding, knowledge, our

  764. wisdom, our searching, our digging,

  765. our logic, everything that we think.

  766. Intellect we bring before the

  767. Lord and we say, Lord, I'm gonna

  768. chase after you with all of this.

  769. And then I love that Mark's

  770. gospel includes the word strength.

  771. We are to chase after the Lord

  772. with all of our ability, all of

  773. our force, and all of our might.

  774. And listen, man, when we get this

  775. first, when this is what we're

  776. pursuing and chasing and what we're

  777. about, man, all of our relationships,

  778. all of our circumstances, all of

  779. our struggles, all the stuff of this

  780. life grows strangely dim, right?

  781. It comes into focus for what it really is.

  782. God cares about your circumstance.

  783. He cares about your situation.

  784. He cares about you.

  785. But man, he is not gonna

  786. enable you to chase the world.

  787. He wants you to chase him and to be

  788. in a loving relationship with him.

  789. Guys, on this Valentine's Day

  790. weekend, lemme just encourage you.

  791. Fellas.

  792. If you want a great relationship

  793. with your wife, if you want your

  794. relationship with your, with your wife

  795. to be like S tier, top level, amazing.

  796. Love God with everything you've

  797. got, quit trying to love her better.

  798. Quit trying to figure out how to

  799. do things that make her happy.

  800. You love God with everything you've got

  801. everything, every fiber of your being.

  802. 'cause check this out.

  803. When you get the first thing

  804. right, everything else falls right.

  805. When you're sold out to Jesus

  806. Christ with everything you've

  807. got, you can't not love your wife.

  808. You can't screw up serving her in love.

  809. You can't mistreat her and not

  810. care for her, and not lead her and

  811. not be a discipler to your spouse.

  812. You can't do any of the things that

  813. you're trying so hard to do on your own.

  814. But instead to say, God, I'm gonna chase

  815. after you with everything I've got.

  816. And wives, same thing, man.

  817. Ladies, not man.

  818. Uh, if you want a relationship with

  819. your husband, that's incredible.

  820. Stop trying to do everything he

  821. wants you to do and make him happy

  822. and all this, and chase after

  823. Jesus with everything you have.

  824. I mean, just think this through, right?

  825. Ladies, you're smarter than us.

  826. Totally legit.

  827. But your best ideas and your best

  828. concepts, they're not quite as good,

  829. better than the guys, but they're

  830. not quite as good as the creator

  831. of life itself and the creator

  832. of these ridiculous husbands that

  833. we all have here, ladies, right?

  834. And so he knows, and he will show you

  835. and he will teach you, and he will

  836. lead you how to be the most effective

  837. in marriage you possibly can, but

  838. it's not through submitting to your

  839. husband and chasing what he wants.

  840. It's through submitting to Jesus and

  841. walking with him so intimately and so

  842. connected that he guides each step,

  843. each decision, each direction, and

  844. it transforms how marriage works.

  845. And listen, if you're single and you want

  846. to be in a loving relationship, man, this

  847. gets people all the time, God, please,

  848. please, I want to be in this relationship.

  849. Just bring the right, you want to

  850. have the most amazing relationship.

  851. As a single person and find somebody

  852. to spend your life with that brings

  853. fulfillment and purpose and meaning

  854. and all those things to chase after

  855. Jesus with everything you have.

  856. Because when you are aligned with him

  857. in total sold out commitment, he'll

  858. finally be ready to bring the person

  859. into your life that he's been working on.

  860. But maybe your commitment to him and

  861. your faithfulness, he wasn't gonna

  862. send his daughter or his son into a

  863. relationship to somebody who wasn't

  864. gonna lead well or serve and love well.

  865. Right?

  866. Listen, it's not complicated, but when

  867. we love God with everything we have,

  868. it changes everything in our life, and

  869. it brings us more joy and more purpose

  870. and more meaning, and more fulfillment,

  871. and all the things that the enemy wants

  872. us to chase somewhere else, right?

  873. It's all lies and illusion.

  874. This was a brutal finale to

  875. the letter that Jesus wrote.

  876. There's a little bit more he says, but.

  877. This is really the core of his

  878. rebuke and know this, Jesus

  879. says, I rebuke those that I love.

  880. I treat like sons and daughters

  881. with discipline, those that I

  882. love and I care about, right?

  883. And he says to his people,

  884. turn, turn, walk away from sin.

  885. Walk away from this chasing of

  886. the world and turn and walk to me.

  887. It's an open invitation to come

  888. and to turn from the darkness and

  889. the sin and the wickedness, and

  890. to walk in relationship with him.

  891. And instead of forsaking our first love,

  892. he calls us to be people who forsake the

  893. world, who forsake the things that are

  894. flesh once and chases, and instead all

  895. in right loving God with all, not part

  896. all of our heart, loving God with all our

  897. soul, all our mind, and all our strength.

  898. Is it a risk?

  899. Hey.

  900. Loves a risk.

  901. Right?

  902. Loves a risk, but we

  903. choose it all the time.

  904. How about trusting the eternal king

  905. of kings and Lord of Lords, our

  906. heavenly Father who loves us Jesus, who

  907. invites us into relationship with him.

  908. There's nothing more important.

  909. There's no relationship.

  910. More important.

  911. And when our relationship

  912. with Jesus Christ is locked

  913. in, man, everything changes.

  914. Alright, Clayton, come

  915. join me a second boy.

  916. We're gonna do something

  917. fun here as we wrap up.

  918. Rusty's gonna play one quick chord here.

  919. Uh, just you on your guitar with,

  920. uh, that last song we did the chorus

  921. of something about God loving us.

  922. And Clayton asked me, he said,

  923. dude, could I just pray for us this

  924. morning as we wrap up the service?

  925. Did you say that?

  926. I can't remember exactly.

  927. I think it was something like that.

  928. I don't remember that.

  929. Okay.

  930. I, I just thought you did.

  931. Maybe I, maybe it was probably your dad.

  932. He just spoke over.

  933. But here's how we're

  934. gonna end this morning.

  935. Um, we're gonna let Clayton

  936. close this in prayer a minute.

  937. Um.

  938. Not because he is got the

  939. craziest boots I've ever seen.

  940. Um, not because this dude is a

  941. finished product or he's an amazing

  942. guy who's got it all perfected.

  943. Um, no Clayton's a roofer and

  944. roofers for Jesus is our new thing.

  945. We're starting.

  946. I'm just kidding.

  947. Um, but I love this dude's heart.

  948. And if you've ever spent time talking

  949. to him, there's an authenticity in

  950. his desire to chase after Jesus.

  951. And what I want you to know is this,

  952. it's not about your perfection.

  953. It's not about you getting it all right?

  954. The church and Ephesus did, they

  955. were crushing it on all the stuff

  956. that looked right, but Jesus knew

  957. the authenticity of their heart.

  958. And so I want Clayton to pray over us this

  959. morning as we close for our hearts and

  960. for each of us, and that as we leave this

  961. place today where God's been present with

  962. us, that for each of us, we'll be honest

  963. with him, and we'll talk to him today and

  964. this week ahead about where our heart is

  965. with him, and we'll let the Holy Spirit.

  966. Break us down and begin to transform us.

  967. And maybe that'll look

  968. like crying in your car.

  969. Maybe it'll look like singing or dancing

  970. in the streets, whatever that looks like.

  971. It's my heart for you.

  972. And I think it's Clayton's heart for you,

  973. that you get to experience the cool things

  974. that God's doing in his life in an effort

  975. to just be soft and tender, to repent

  976. and turn, and to be in relationship with

  977. the greatest Valentine there ever was.

  978. So would you mind praying

  979. for us, my friend And

  980. dear God, I just wanna say thank you.

  981. Thank you for everything that you're

  982. doing and in all of our lives it shows.

  983. It means so much to us.

  984. Um, I just wanna pray again, continue

  985. to break down and soften my heart

  986. till it's softer than a feather.

  987. I just want to, I just want to continue

  988. to praise and say thank you because

  989. the things that you've shown me,

  990. and I'm sure you've shown a lot of

  991. other people in this room, is that.

  992. When we ask and we ask with intent,

  993. not for ourselves, but for your will,

  994. our lives change for the better.

  995. I just want to ask also that as we all

  996. dive into the war word, myself included,

  997. that you let the Holy Spirits guide, guide

  998. our thoughts into what you want us to

  999. hear from that and what you want from us.

1000. Thank you, God, for who you are,

1001. and thank you for loving us.

1002. In your name I pray, amen.

  1003. Amen.

  1004. Amen.

  1005. Thanks buddy.

1006. Alright guys, get out there and love

1007. well and reach for the king of Kings

1008. and Lord of lords and the week ahead.

  1009. Love you guys.
