  1. Alright.

  2. All right.

  3. Thanks Worship team.

  4. That was great.

  5. Jed and I had the privilege of

  6. going to Bryce Crawford live

  7. podcast tour event on Friday night.

  8. And uh, the song we just sang,

  9. what was the one right before this?

  10. Holy, holy Forever.

  11. Holy Forever man.

  12. They sang it in the, uh,

  13. Marat Theater, downtown Indie.

  14. And it was thunder is, I'm gonna be

  15. honest, I dunno what you thought yet.

  16. I thought this was a little

  17. louder, a little better.

  18. I'm just saying nice work.

  19. And then you guys sing

  20. really great about Christmas.

  21. I just want you to know that

  22. that's pretty fantastic.

  23. First day.

  24. We haven't had snow in forever.

  25. Is anybody else's, uh, OCD, just

  26. kicking in on this cross, like we

  27. have got to get this squared away.

  28. How about.

  29. Is that better?

  30. We all go with that.

  31. I like it.

  32. Okay.

  33. Okay.

  34. I like our psychedelic cross day.

  35. I love it.

  36. It's kinda more white rock than

  37. this simple, normal, ornate thing.

  38. Hey, today is kind of a crazy, fun day.

  39. We have a church membership Sunday

  40. thing going on, and if you're not

  41. familiar with the church membership,

  42. you will be by the end of this morning.

  43. And if you think it's weird, you

  44. probably think it's even weirder

  45. by the, no, I'm just kidding.

  46. It's gonna be great.

  47. Um, and after church we've got this

  48. thing called an annual meeting, which

  49. is a yearly business meeting we do

  50. for all the members of our church.

  51. Everybody's invited who

  52. wants to come hang out.

  53. It's just pretty short.

  54. We talk through all the finance

  55. stuff, board nominations, mission

  56. report, and then get you to lunch.

  57. So everybody's invited

  58. to be a part of that.

  59. Um, you wanna see what

  60. goes on behind the curtain.

  61. It's not much of a curtain.

  62. We don't even have a curtain.

  63. So it's kind of what it is.

  64. But you're welcome to be a part of

  65. that, invite you to be a part of that.

  66. But today we're gonna spend a

  67. little time talking about church

  68. membership and I gotta, um.

  69. I have to kinda let you like, you know how

  70. sometimes you wanna sneak up on something,

  71. you know, and you're like, okay, now you

  72. figured I'm just gonna go right out from

  73. the gate and just let you know though

  74. the word church membership is up there.

  75. Everything I'm gonna talk about

  76. today is really about what it looks

  77. like to be a part of the church.

  78. The family of God.

  79. The body of Christ.

  80. And if you're an official member or

  81. you're a dude who thought you were

  82. part of the church, 'cause you're here.

  83. Yes, this all applies to you.

  84. If you've ever heard me talk about

  85. church membership, you're probably one

  86. of the people who's in the minority.

  87. 'cause I don't talk about it very much.

  88. In fact, I'm not a huge fan

  89. of having to do stuff with

  90. membership because quite honestly.

  91. I think Jesus, uh, kind of loves

  92. us all equally, calls us to a place

  93. of walking faithfully with him.

  94. And yet, in the midst of the state of

  95. Indiana, in the United States of America

  96. and the IRS code for a five one C3

  97. organization, we're required by law to

  98. have members as part of this organization.

  99. So we do have to do some things,

  100. and maybe there's something

  101. to this membership thing.

  102. I like to talk about it from the

  103. sense of like the difference between

  104. choosing to just live with somebody

  105. and going ahead and making the

  106. commitment to be married, right?

  107. Like, I want to be a part of this family

  108. and I'm committed to it, and I'm all in,

  109. versus I'm gonna just enjoy the ride and

  110. get what I can get, but know, kind of keep

  111. my commitment at a, at a arm's length.

  112. Now, as you're gonna see this morning,

  113. that commitment is, uh, probably

  114. what a lot of you're doing anyhow.

  115. But just to let you know, this

  116. isn't just a membership sermon.

  117. So if you're not interested in

  118. membership or you're already a

  119. member, you don't have to listen.

  120. You do, because this is

  121. about following Jesus.

  122. So check it out.

  123. Our church membership

  124. policy is pretty intense.

  125. We have one major requirement, and

  126. it's simply this, that you've confessed

  127. your sin, repented, and accepted

  128. Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.

  129. 'cause here's this crazy

  130. idea we have around here.

  131. It probably shouldn't be harder to

  132. get into heaven or to white rock

  133. than to get into heaven, right?

  134. Like, if it's more complicated for you

  135. to figure out how to get into White

  136. Rock as a member of this church than

  137. to be a, a dooo or, or lady who's gonna

  138. be in heaven with Jesus because of

  139. your relationship with him, that just

  140. seems a little outta whack, right?

  141. Jesus invites us into

  142. relationship with him.

  143. But let me just unpack this requirement

  144. a second, because there's a little bit

  145. of doctrine and salvation here that's

  146. probably worth paying attention to.

  147. See.

  148. Here's what this looks like.

  149. We have to be people who

  150. have confessed our sin.

  151. What does that mean?

  152. It means in an acknowledgement that

  153. there's a sin issue between me and God.

  154. I'm not some perfect person.

  155. I'm not some perfect guy.

  156. I'm not somebody who's good enough by

  157. the works that I do and who I am, that

  158. somehow I'm worthy to be a follower

  159. of Jesus and get eternal life, right?

  160. That's not what heaven's about.

  161. Everybody.

  162. All of sin fallen short

  163. of the glory of God.

  164. The wages of sin is death, right?

  165. And while we were yet

  166. sinners, Christ died for us.

  167. So Jesus comes to offer forgiveness

  168. to all of us who are sinners.

  169. And if you think you are not and

  170. haven't ever been, I'm so sorry for you.

  171. But here's the really simple reality.

  172. You were born into sin, mankind

  173. sinned against God, rebelled, boom.

  174. We called generational

  175. sin and is totally unfair.

  176. 'cause none of us were there.

  177. We wouldn't have eaten the fruit, right?

  178. We would've kicked the snake and we

  179. would've given a noie to Adam and stop.

  180. What are you guys doing?

  181. Right?

  182. That's what we would've done, right?

  183. We wouldn't have done that stuff.

  184. So it's not fair God, that we're

  185. born into the human race full of sin.

  186. Totally get it.

  187. Feel that way myself.

  188. But it is what it is.

  189. You and I have a bigger

  190. problem than original sin.

  191. We have personal sin with God, right?

  192. You and I have broken God's holy law.

  193. You ever hear about the 10 Commandments?

  194. They're not that complicated.

  195. Honor your father and mother.

  196. Uh, don't lie.

  197. Mm. Don't cover what your neighbor has.

  198. Ah, listen, I'm a

  199. professional law breaker.

  200. Trust me, man, I've broken the 10

  201. Commandments so many times in my life.

  202. Nobody has to point out guilt for me.

  203. I know it.

  204. I can see it.

  205. And if you've broken one of God's

  206. laws one time, that makes you a

  207. sinner who's in need of a savior.

  208. And Jesus says, if we confess our sins,

  209. he's faithful and just forgive us our sins

  210. and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

  211. We come before him and say, Jesus,

  212. please forgive me for my sin.

  213. That's confession.

  214. Right?

  215. And then there's this word, repent,

  216. which is a fancy Bible word, repentance.

  217. But biblically it means 180 degree turn.

  218. It means I was walking this way and I

  219. stopped, confessed my sin, and I repent.

  220. Turned 180 degrees.

  221. Now I'm going the other direction.

  222. That's what it means.

  223. It means we don't continue in

  224. our sin, so we repent of our sin.

  225. We ask Jesus to forgive us in

  226. confession, and we change our

  227. behaviors to line up with this Savior.

  228. Why?

  229. Because we've accepted Jesus Christ,

  230. not as buddy, as friend, as meal

  231. ticket, as get outta jail free card.

  232. We've accepted him as Lord, meaning he's

  233. in charge and we submit to his authority

  234. in our life, recognizing he's the Savior

  235. and the only way, the truth, the life.

  236. I sang about it recently, that

  237. he is the only way to salvation.

  238. So here's the deal.

  239. If you've confessed your

  240. sin to Jesus Christ.

  241. If you've repented and you've asked

  242. him to be your Lord and Savior and

  243. you're trying to walk in obedience to

  244. him putting to death the deeds of the

  245. sinful nature in the flesh, and that's

  246. what you're in this process of doing.

  247. You're on this journey of faith.

  248. That's awesome.

  249. That's beautiful.

  250. You meet Dun, the one requirement to

  251. be a member of White Rock Fellowship

  252. because if you can get into heaven, you

  253. ought be able to be a member around here.

  254. But there's more to membership

  255. than salvation and being

  256. a member doesn't save you.

  257. Just so you know.

  258. In fact, maybe if I unpack this

  259. a little bit, this'll help us.

  260. I'm gonna pull some Ss outta here.

  261. I don't know why I have so

  262. many s words all the time.

  263. Like not the bad S words, Jamie,

  264. just in case that came wrong.

  265. Um, let's talk with some s words

  266. that help us unpack this idea a

  267. little bit because here's what

  268. happens a lot in church membership.

  269. We get caught up in

  270. this concept of status.

  271. Somehow when you're in a member of White

  272. Rock Fellowship or a member of something,

  273. you're a little more elite in your status.

  274. You know?

  275. Kind of a big deal.

  276. Kind of a big deal.

  277. One of the things I love about White Rock

  278. is I could put like a hundred people up

  279. here and say, pick out eight members of

  280. the church and be like, I don't know.

  281. Can be really honest with you.

  282. I'm not sure either.

  283. I have to go back and check 'cause

  284. I do this so frequently, right?

  285. We don't talk about membership a lot.

  286. We don't make a big, big,

  287. crazy deal out of it.

  288. I probably should do more with

  289. that, but for me, I love you.

  290. We walk in this relationship

  291. together as the body of Christ,

  292. the family of God, and if you wanna

  293. be part of the family, let's go.

  294. But there is a little bit about

  295. membership that's kind of important

  296. and we do have to do some stuff.

  297. That's why we've developed the White

  298. Rock Fellowship membership quiz.

  299. And if you've ever been in a meeting.

  300. Today, at the end of the service, people

  301. who have gone through this, uh, small

  302. meeting we have and have met with me,

  303. are gonna come up and become members

  304. of our church as they would like to.

  305. And maybe by the end they'll

  306. be like, nah, I'm out.

  307. Nevermind.

  308. That's totally cool.

  309. That's fair.

  310. I can appreciate that.

  311. So like this membership quiz we put

  312. together, it's really important, you

  313. know, it's got questions like this and

  314. they're just simple, true and false

  315. questions that you probably can get

  316. members of the congregation understand.

  317. It's their responsibility to laugh

  318. during the pastor jokes to help

  319. create an environment of reverence and

  320. respect for those in leadership, right?

  321. Those of you would say true.

  322. False.

  323. False.

  324. See, this is like the

  325. most false ever, right?

  326. Like, uh, it'd be really great, you

  327. know, if you'd laugh a little more,

  328. maybe roll your eyes less, Jamie, right?

  329. But ultimately, uh, it's

  330. not about some status thing.

  331. In fact, sometimes we

  332. get lost on this, right?

  333. Members are expected to demonstrate a

  334. deeper spiritual walk than non-members.

  335. But not necessarily as deep

  336. as the pastoral leadership.

  337. 'cause we believe there's kind of tears

  338. right in this spirituality, right?

  339. And you go from being a baby Christian

  340. to being just a normal Christian, to

  341. being a church member, Christian, to

  342. being a staff Christian, to being a

  343. dead Christian who stands before Jesus

  344. and gives the count of your life.

  345. I dunno how that works.

  346. Um, take a look at this.

  347. Galatians chapter three, verse 28

  348. says this, there is neither Jew nor

  349. Greek Gentile, neither slave nor

  350. free, neither male nor female, for

  351. you are all one in Christ Jesus.

  352. I love the phrase that the ground

  353. at the foot of the cross is level.

  354. Such a cool picture, right?

  355. I dunno if you're, you know, a king

  356. or you're epic or you're awesome or

  357. you have hair or you don't have hair,

  358. you get to come before Jesus, kneel

  359. before him and accept him as Lord.

  360. 'cause we're all in this thing together

  361. and it's a level playing field, right?

  362. There is no inequality before Jesus.

  363. It doesn't matter what the

  364. world might give you status for.

  365. As a follower of Jesus, you're

  366. invited into being part of

  367. his family full deal, right?

  368. James 2 1 9 warns the church.

  369. 'cause they got into it, right?

  370. They were like believers in our gls.

  371. Jesus Christ.

  372. Lord Jesus Christ must not

  373. show favoritism, but if you

  374. show favoritism, you sin.

  375. Right?

  376. Jesus tells stories about workers in

  377. the field who just got in in the last

  378. second, and they're treated equally.

  379. Why?

  380. Because Jesus is about unity

  381. in his church, and he's

  382. about equality in his church.

  383. You don't matter more and

  384. you don't matter less.

  385. Now, parents, if you have one

  386. child, you can answer this question.

  387. Who's your favorite kid?

  388. Right?

  389. But if you have two, if you have

  390. three, you don't have any favorites.

  391. But if you have two, right?

  392. Who's your favorite kid?

  393. It's the dumbest question

  394. in the history of the world,

  395. because we love equally, right?

  396. Here's the cool thing about God.

  397. He says, come be a part of my family,

  398. Renee.

  399. Come on.

  400. You only got one.

  401. Stop making fun of Thomas.

  402. He's got two.

  403. And it's a hard thing.

  404. So just I love, oh, I love this church.

  405. Okay, unity, equality, right?

  406. Here's the important element

  407. I wanna throw at you.

  408. I love this phrase, check this out.

  409. Unity does not mean uniformity.

  410. It doesn't mean we're all uniform

  411. and we're all the same, right?

  412. There's different roles and

  413. responsibilities God gives us.

  414. Scripture uses a lot of cool metaphors,

  415. this Corinthians passage and over in

  416. Romans we have like family imagery

  417. and we have body imagery, right?

  418. That we're, we're all part of the

  419. body, but you can't have everybody

  420. be the index finger, right?

  421. And you just got a billion index

  422. fingers pointing at everybody.

  423. You gotta have other parts of the

  424. body to do the stuff the body does.

  425. And we all have important roles and

  426. responsibilities, talents, gifts,

  427. uniqueness that God brings and puts

  428. in us so that when we live out our

  429. giftedness in the body of Christ.

  430. The body is fulfilled and it's able to do

  431. all the stuff that God wants to do in us.

  432. That's not status.

  433. The problem is, is we

  434. assign status, right?

  435. You're a more spiritual person.

  436. 'cause you can stand on the

  437. platform and sing a song.

  438. Now, do we have standards of expectation

  439. for people who are gonna be in leadership?

  440. Yes, but I'm gonna tell

  441. you a little secret.

  442. Jesus has standards of

  443. expectation for his kids, whether

  444. they're in leadership or not.

  445. And if we're gonna try to make it

  446. out that all the leaders gotta follow

  447. Jesus and behave, and everybody else

  448. kind of gets to do whatever, 'cause

  449. they're the bad kids who just have

  450. to play in the pen in the backyard.

  451. That's not biblical.

  452. That's not even close.

  453. Right?

  454. Status.

  455. Not a thing.

  456. Not a thing in the church.

  457. This word though, is serving.

  458. Serving.

  459. I like to tell people, if you wanna be

  460. a member of our church, congratulations.

  461. You just signed up to roll up

  462. your sleeves and work hard.

  463. That's your status, right?

  464. You get to be asked to help.

  465. More than the person who's like,

  466. I ain't, I ain't ready to commit.

  467. No worries.

  468. We'll get you there.

  469. Ha ha.

  470. No, not really.

  471. Not yet, right?

  472. Serving Jesus.

  473. Kind of modeled some cool stuff, but

  474. let's take another question first.

  475. True or false?

  476. All members must serve in some

  477. capacity in the local church.

  478. True

  479. Renee's gonna be doing signups for

  480. children's ministry, so make sure

  481. you catch Renee right after this.

  482. Okay?

  483. Here's the truth.

  484. You do not have to serve to be a

  485. member of Wyrick Fellowship, but you

  486. are missing out on what God wants to

  487. do in and through you, and a calling

  488. that he lays on all of his people.

  489. And something, ladies and gentlemen,

  490. that he modeled and said, do it.

  491. Check it out, Matthew, Jesus talking.

  492. Whoever would be great among

  493. you must be your servant.

  494. Whoever would be first, you

  495. must or you must be the slave.

  496. Even I can't read that.

  497. Whoever would be first among

  498. you must be your slave.

  499. Even as the son of man came not to be

  500. served, but to serve, Jesus came to serve.

  501. We have this cool image where he's

  502. over in John with his disciples, and

  503. now after he has washed his disciples

  504. feet, he says, now that I, your Lord

  505. and teacher have washed your feet.

  506. Now that I served you, you also

  507. should wash one another's feet.

  508. I've set an example that you

  509. should do as I have done.

  510. Jesus didn't come to be

  511. glamorized or to be served.

  512. He came to serve and he asks, not

  513. the church members, he asks his

  514. sons and daughters who are part of

  515. his family to join him in serving.

  516. If you're somebody who just sits

  517. and gets, that's not what it's

  518. about as a follower of Jesus, right.

  519. We're called to roll up our sleeves and

  520. serve and impact the world around us and

  521. give cups of cold water in Jesus' name

  522. to little tiny kids next door, right?

  523. And to try to keep the teens from

  524. breaking things or whatever that looks

  525. like right as we serve, and to go to our

  526. neighbors and to help those in, we're

  527. supposed to serve and we're not serving.

  528. I think you could almost make

  529. a case if you read this again

  530. really slowly, that you're being

  531. disobedient to what Jesus said.

  532. Well, I don't really wanna serve.

  533. I don't really have time to serve.

  534. Well, shame on you.

  535. Let's get those priorities squared away.

  536. 'cause Jesus said, we gotta do it.

  537. We ought to do it.

  538. It's not sit and get it is

  539. get up and get to work, right?

  540. Uh, I love this phrase.

  541. I picked it up a long time ago, and

  542. I don't know who it's from, but I

  543. just love this phrase, serving others

  544. does not lead to greatness, right?

  545. It just doesn't.

  546. Serving others does not lead to greatness.

  547. Jesus said, you wanna

  548. be great in the kingdom?

  549. Be a servant of all.

  550. But I'm telling you, serving

  551. others does not lead to greatness.

  552. Serving others is greatness is how

  553. Jesus defines status in his kingdom.

  554. You want to be great.

  555. You want to be important, you

  556. wanna be significant, roll up your

  557. sleeves and get to work and serve.

  558. 'cause that's greatness.

  559. You wanna sit around and talk about being

  560. a servant, not so impressive, right?

  561. But you wanna be great.

  562. That's where the action is.

  563. Serve.

  564. Don't miss too.

  565. And the devil's great at trying

  566. to tell you, there's a lot of

  567. other stuff you should put your

  568. time, energy, and resources into.

  569. There's so much more fulfilling.

  570. And they're not, and you know it,

  571. and I know it and we all know it,

  572. but God's called us to do the stuff

  573. that matters for all eternity.

  574. And when you do it, you're like,

  575. dude, this is, this is cool.

  576. Kinda making heaven crowded

  577. is a pretty cool thing.

  578. Status serving.

  579. Let's snag the first

  580. part of this word serve.

  581. And let's just throw in services real

  582. quick and check another question.

  583. True or false?

  584. If you wanna be a member, you

  585. must physically attend a minimum

  586. of three Sunday worship services.

  587. One small group every

  588. midweek activity monthly.

  589. And, uh, that will make

  590. you an active member.

  591. Disappointing for me, I'm not gonna lie,

  592. but yes, this is not, this is not true.

  593. You don't have to.

  594. Show up to church.

  595. You don't have to be a

  596. part of a small group.

  597. You don't have to be

  598. part of a Bible study.

  599. You don't have to do, I mean, we're not,

  600. we're not church police, but I'm gonna

  601. call you to purpose and significance.

  602. In fact, if you wanna look over at

  603. Hebrews scripture says, let us not

  604. neglect meeting together as somewhere

  605. in the habit of doing, but let us

  606. encourage one another and all the

  607. more as you see the day approaching.

  608. 'cause see, here's the

  609. perspective of this verse.

  610. There's a day coming when all of this

  611. stuff that we're busy prioritizing over

  612. the gathering of the body of Christ

  613. is gonna burn and just melt away.

  614. Right?

  615. And eternity is with

  616. Jesus and with his people.

  617. But we're kind of busy, you know?

  618. And this word actually neglect,

  619. ties to the word forsake, right?

  620. That I've forsaken my first

  621. love that I've forsaken.

  622. And I love this word habit because

  623. I think it's like, man, what

  624. are the habits that make it.

  625. Into your life that are more important

  626. than gathering as the body of Christ

  627. on a regular basis to come together

  628. for worship, for encouragement to pray.

  629. I mean, to hear God's word, like

  630. what is it that's so important?

  631. What other habit do you have in

  632. your life that ought to be the

  633. priority over this experience?

  634. I mean, if you can give it to

  635. me, I'd love to listen to it.

  636. I mean, listen, if you're Sunday

  637. mornings, you're tied up because

  638. you're going into nursing homes and

  639. you're washing feet of older people

  640. who can't come out, and you're

  641. preaching the word to them, then you're

  642. actually secretly still doing church.

  643. Sorry about that.

  644. Right?

  645. That doesn't work.

  646. But man, there's a whole bunch of us

  647. who worship at the altar of sports

  648. and dance, but we're not dancing

  649. before the King of Kings, right?

  650. We're busy doing a lot of stuff that's

  651. so important and such a priority that we

  652. can't make time for what's most important.

  653. If you're a member of White

  654. Rock Fellowship, I'm gonna

  655. encourage you to show up.

  656. Be apart.

  657. If you're not a member of White

  658. Rock Fellowship, I'm gonna encourage

  659. you to show up and be apart.

  660. If you're a dude walking down the

  661. street who doesn't know Jesus, I'm gonna

  662. encourage you to show up and be apart,

  663. rearrange the priorities and habits

  664. of your life to make Jesus central.

  665. That's significant

  666. services status serving.

  667. How about this word Scripture?

  668. Listen, can debate this.

  669. You can argue this.

  670. You can go all over the place

  671. with a whole lot of things.

  672. There's a billion people who are gonna

  673. ask you different things about the Bible.

  674. But listen, the Bible's the authoritative

  675. word of God and we build everything

  676. on it is the, it is the answer and the

  677. final authority on truth and conduct, on

  678. faith, on action as a follower of Jesus.

  679. Church tradition.

  680. Something you read on a TV

  681. show or, uh, read on tv?

  682. Can you read TV shows?

  683. No.

  684. You probably read a book.

  685. Uh, you watch a TV show,

  686. you see something online.

  687. There's probably some great

  688. YouTubers out there trying to

  689. tell you It doesn't really matter.

  690. Lemme tell you.

  691. Check this out.

  692. Oh wait, sorry, I forgot the question.

  693. You guys ready?

  694. Feel this one?

  695. This one's probably gonna be a trick.

  696. One member, uh, members must turn

  697. in a monthly Bible reading report.

  698. If members fail to complete the

  699. assigned Bible reading, their membership

  700. will be held in a probationary

  701. state until set time of completion.

  702. True.

  703. Jamie has been pushing for

  704. this since we got married.

  705. Right.

  706. Listen.

  707. You get a gold star when you can

  708. bring your Bible reading report in.

  709. No, of course not.

  710. Of course not.

  711. It's just that if the Bible is

  712. God's eternal living word and it's

  713. a source of truth and hope and

  714. direction and clarity, what else

  715. are we reading that's so important?

  716. What else are we doing that's so

  717. important that God's word doesn't have a

  718. daily priority in the way that we live?

  719. And it's not just church members, right?

  720. It's all of us who, who

  721. claim to follow Christ.

  722. The Old Testament he, the

  723. Isaiah, the prophet says this,

  724. the grass, it withers, right?

  725. Unfortunately, mine's growing and I

  726. got the mow, and that frustrates me.

  727. But the grass withers, the flowers

  728. are gonna drop off and die.

  729. They're gonna fade.

  730. But the word of our God stands forever.

  731. And in case you missed it, Jesus

  732. in the New Testament went ahead

  733. and just said, Hey guys, heaven

  734. and earth will pass away, right?

  735. But my words will never pass away.

  736. Here's something that's

  737. kind of cool to think about.

  738. One day you're gonna be standing

  739. in eternity with the people who

  740. said The Bible is just nonsense.

  741. It's an old book.

  742. It's stupid.

  743. And do you know the only book that's

  744. gonna be present that's gonna be read

  745. nice and loud and everybody's gonna

  746. be talking about is the living act

  747. of breathing word of God, the sharper

  748. than any two edges sword that divides

  749. bone and marrow and pierces the heart.

  750. And that powerful word of God is gonna

  751. be eternal and everybody's gonna see

  752. it and everybody's gonna know it.

  753. And every scoffer and everyone who

  754. challenges its authority is gonna

  755. stand condemned and ashamed at the

  756. power and authority of the Word of God.

  757. And it's gonna be the case Jesus told us.

  758. I'm telling you, don't be shocked by that.

  759. There's gonna be a lot of

  760. people shocked by that.

  761. But you can claim, I read a really

  762. good self-help book and Jesus gonna

  763. be, they took some, took some ideas

  764. from me, man, but they got off course

  765. because they didn't acknowledge

  766. me as Savior and Lord, right?

  767. So the scripture is the foundation

  768. of what we do and what we believe

  769. and how we live, and it needs to

  770. be the foundation of how you do.

  771. If you're taking the Bible in God's

  772. word and you're taking man's word

  773. and you're just trying to find nice

  774. balances between them, I mean, I'm

  775. sorry, you're gonna have to make choices

  776. 'cause Jesus is gonna challenge you

  777. to follow him or follow the world, but

  778. there's no middle ground in that space.

  779. Scripture status serving services.

  780. How about this one?

  781. This is a fun, big word.

  782. Stewardship.

  783. Stewardship.

  784. This is my favorite question

  785. and let's check it out.

  786. Members are required to have a bank

  787. account routing number on file in the

  788. event that they miss a weekly tithe check.

  789. Could we get a vote on this?

  790. Maybe we could make this one true.

  791. Anybody?

  792. Ah, man.

  793. Man, I wish.

  794. No, I really don't know that.

  795. I wish.

  796. 'cause there's weeks when Jamie's

  797. like, wait, did you put the check in?

  798. No.

  799. Did you put the check in?

  800. Then we'd be in trouble.

  801. Right?

  802. Pastor can't preach today.

  803. He's on probation.

  804. 'cause he forgot to bring his

  805. checkbook this morning and had

  806. to get it later this afternoon.

  807. Here's the deal.

  808. God doesn't need your money guys.

  809. He doesn't need your money at all.

  810. It's gonna burn anyhow.

  811. Right?

  812. But he needs your heart.

  813. And you need your faithfulness and

  814. tithing and how we give and our resources.

  815. See, stewardship is about not just money,

  816. but it's about time, energy, and money.

  817. Everything that we have.

  818. Everything that we are.

  819. And Jesus says, I see your heart, right?

  820. And when you're reluctant to give with

  821. your financial resources, your energy,

  822. where that precious commodity of time,

  823. you tell me exactly where you stand.

  824. You are a living testimony to your

  825. faith in Jesus Christ based on your

  826. Google calendar and based on your

  827. whatever rocket mortgage account you

  828. got linked to your checkbook, right?

  829. Take a look at what you value.

  830. Take a look at what's important.

  831. Take a look at your faith

  832. and how you're living it out.

  833. This is what matters in my life.

  834. This is what I'm about.

  835. Jesus doesn't say drain your

  836. bank account and bring it into

  837. the little basket in the back.

  838. He says, be faithful with

  839. the resources you have.

  840. 10% of everything you have needs

  841. to come in and be returned to

  842. me and watch what I'll do as you

  843. trust me, walking in 90% now.

  844. Is that a requirement here?

  845. Of course not.

  846. We can't force you to do that.

  847. We've tried.

  848. It's illegal.

  849. We can't do it.

  850. I'm just kidding.

  851. Um, but listen, we only

  852. operate on tis and offerings.

  853. That's how we roll, right?

  854. We don't, we don't, uh, we've been

  855. trying to sell coffee, but we take a hit

  856. on the coffee thing every week, right?

  857. Like, not really.

  858. It's, it's just about God's

  859. people being faithful, right?

  860. And as God's people are faithful, the

  861. kingdom is just built and expanded

  862. and 'cause the resources he brings in.

  863. So if you don't do it, it's cool.

  864. Hey, by the way too, I, nobody

  865. really talks about this much, but

  866. I have no idea what you guys give.

  867. Just so you know, like I don't

  868. have access to the accounts,

  869. names attached to the accounts.

  870. I get balances of how we're doing on

  871. stuff, so I can kind of pay attention

  872. to kinda how we're doing in general.

  873. But like, I don't know what you give.

  874. So you might be somebody who's been

  875. given like 90% of your income, right?

  876. And I'm like, dude, Jonathan,

  877. you gotta give more man.

  878. You gotta dig deep.

  879. Dig deep.

  880. And you're like, dude, I already

  881. gave everything I have, right?

  882. I wouldn't even know, but I

  883. might be talking to Shannon

  884. and be like, Shannon, man.

  885. These jerks aren't even tithing.

  886. And Shannon's like, we haven't

  887. tithed since we started

  888. working as children's pastors.

  889. Right?

  890. Like, who knows, right?

  891. I don't know.

  892. I don't know.

  893. And I love it that way.

  894. You know why?

  895. 'cause you can't come up to me and

  896. leverage me and say, Hey pastor,

  897. you should preach more on this.

  898. Or Pastor, we should do this.

  899. Well, that's our funder.

  900. We gotta make the funder happy.

  901. Try to make God happy, right?

  902. And be accountable to him.

  903. And we're accountable to the church

  904. board and treasuring and how we spend

  905. money, all those kind of things.

  906. There's plenty of accountability,

  907. but money, it's his.

  908. And we give it to him and we

  909. see what he wants to do with it.

  910. And maybe you'll learn more

  911. about that at our super exciting

  912. annual business meeting.

  913. There's a little plug coming up, right?

  914. Hey, uh, listen, Jesus says this

  915. in a parable that I think all of us

  916. are secretly hoping when we think

  917. about time, energy, and money.

  918. At the end of the parable here in Matthew

  919. 25 21, after the servant was faithful

  920. with what he'd been entrusted, Jesus said,

  921. well done, good and faithful servant,

  922. enter into your master's happiness.

  923. His rest.

  924. God's entrusted us with a bit

  925. of time on this earth, a bit

  926. of resource, a bit of energy.

  927. What are we doing with it?

  928. How are we living?

  929. Are we trying to build this kingdom?

  930. Are we trying to build our kingdom?

  931. And what's that look like?

  932. What's the balance of that?

  933. Sometimes we get that outta whack.

  934. But as followers of Jesus, forget about

  935. church membership as followers of Jesus

  936. Christ, being faithful with the resources

  937. he's given us is critical stewardship,

  938. status serving services, scripture.

  939. And I think we'll throw one big S in here

  940. that I think is really a key one that kind

  941. of grabs the heart of the whole thing.

  942. And it's this, we submit to one another in

  943. love, out of reverence to Christ we love.

  944. It's the defining characteristic

  945. of a follow Jesus Christ, right?

  946. That we love and we love and

  947. submit to one another in love outta

  948. reverence to Jesus because he's Lord.

  949. And scripture says we give

  950. preference to one another in love.

  951. It's gonna bring up these two

  952. little words that I thought were

  953. kind of interesting and Rusty kinda

  954. brought it up in his little sharing.

  955. It's cool seats and stalls.

  956. Uh, it's kind of funny because,

  957. uh, I love, like, look beside you.

  958. Um, some of you're sitting next

  959. to people who haven't showered.

  960. I'm just kidding.

  961. Not really, but like,

  962. you guys are like packed.

  963. You guys are like packed

  964. in here pretty tight.

  965. And I love this because we're all

  966. squeezed in to celebrate Jesus

  967. and be a part of this morning.

  968. It's fantastic, right?

  969. Um, but I want you to know,

  970. like as a church, we're like,

  971. dude, how do we keep growing?

  972. How do we keep reaching?

  973. What does that look like?

  974. And we don't want to go

  975. to too service dynamic.

  976. We don't want to have to rip the place

  977. off of, well, we don't mind that probably,

  978. but I don't know how that even works.

  979. We're in a really interesting position

  980. because we're like, we're just

  981. shoving people in and we're piling,

  982. but now people driving by like, what

  983. the heck is going on in White Rock?

  984. And they come check it out too.

  985. So it's kind of fun.

  986. And I like chaos, so

  987. this is kind of my jam.

  988. But as a member, you might be asked about

  989. your seat or about your parking stall,

  990. like, uh, hey, would you scoot over?

  991. Would you make a little more room?

  992. Would your carpool with some

  993. friends to come to church so that

  994. we don't turn people away And people

  995. pull into the parking lot, drive

  996. around and they leave 'cause they

  997. can't even find a place to park.

  998. 'cause we already got

  999. 15 cars in the ditch.

  1000. Like there's some dynamics we're

1001. facing and when we give preference

1002. to one another in love, all that

1003. stuff becomes eh, kind of irrelevant.

  1004. It's not a big deal.

1005. Maybe an inconvenience, but we're

1006. trying to work together for a

1007. bigger cause and a greater cause.

1008. And that's a picture of some practical

1009. things we're working on together.

1010. And so listen, this might be the

1011. deal breaker for all you people who

1012. are thinking about membership today.

1013. We might ask you to try to carpool.

1014. We might ask you to scoot over and

1015. give up your favorite cushiony seat for

1016. another friend to squeeze in next to you.

1017. And you might be like,

  1018. Andy, that's too far.

1019. That's where love stops, right?

  1020. I can appreciate that.

  1021. Not really.

1022. I'm just so proud of you guys.

1023. It's so fun to watch

1024. you guys be like, Hey.

1025. So we're trying to figure

1026. it out, just so you know.

1027. But some of that is because we're about

1028. trying to figure out what it looks like.

1029. To submit to one another and love

1030. and give preference to one another.

1031. And if we live that out constantly in

1032. every area that makes what it looks

1033. like to be a church member or just

1034. part of our family hanging out with us

1035. who's not official, we still love you.

  1036. Right?

  1037. And it's a big deal.

1038. These are some important pieces of how

1039. the church sometimes gets sidetracked

1040. or lost on what it really looks like to

1041. try to be a faithful follower of Jesus.

1042. And if you are somebody who wants to be

1043. a member of our church, we're gonna call

1044. you to walk in that, all of those things.

1045. And we'll probably also, if you don't

1046. wanna be a member, call you to walk

1047. in those things, because I think

1048. Jesus calls us to that kind of action.

1049. And it's fun to be a part of celebrating

1050. that together and being part of a

1051. church family that that rolls in

1052. that kind of way to love each other.

  1053. Well, love that.

1054. So this morning we have some

1055. people who are gonna come join us.

1056. Now what we do in.

1057. Conclusion of a membership Sunday.

1058. There are people who, uh, took the

1059. official membership class and then

1060. there's people who talk to me individually

1061. and I gave them the driveway awkward

1062. version of the official membership class.

1063. Uh, and so if you're one of those families

1064. or family groups, if you want to come

1065. forward, Tom went next door and helped

1066. get some of our, some of your kids here.

1067. 'cause we bring families up

1068. together with their kids as a

  1069. whole group celebrating membership.

1070. So this is gonna make it awkward

1071. parents if your kids come up

1072. front and you don't join them.

1073. So if you're one of those

1074. families, please come up here.

1075. We're gonna have you stand across

1076. the front as we take in official

  1077. membership here this morning.

1078. And Thomas, please bring your

1079. pictures and I'll explain those to me.

1080. Just keep 'em together for a second.

  1081. Did you bring your.

  1082. There's a blood pleasure.

1083. Oh, it'll be on the screen.

  1084. You can do it.

  1085. Yeah.

  1086. What's that?

  1087. The parking lot conversations.

  1088. You bet.

  1089. You bet.

1090. Hey, uh, so I gotta tell you,

1091. we did something really kind

1092. of cool this time around.

1093. We haven't done this before, but,

1094. um, Hey, Thomas, where are you at?

  1095. You over this side?

1096. I gotta, I gotta, where have you do this?

1097. You wanna just hold yours?

1098. Alright, I'll let you hold that one.

  1099. Okay.

1100. So Megan couldn't be here today.

1101. So we worked, we worked this through the

1102. church board and her picture is here.

1103. And also, here we go.

1104. You guys are gonna be holding babies soon.

1105. Can you hold the picture

  1106. for me real quick?

1107. And that is the shelling

1108. family who's out of town today.

1109. But they were like, we waited

1110. two years for you to get around

1111. to one of these meetings.

  1112. Again.

1113. Please let us in the group.

1114. So we're going to, as a church

1115. board, we're like, you know what,

1116. pictures can be valid, right?

  1117. They're worth a thousand words.

1118. And then maybe next Sunday or two,

1119. we'll grab the whole Mackey family

1120. and the whole shelling family and

1121. pray over them here in the conclusion

1122. of our time together as, as members.

  1123. But you guys, um.

  1124. Here's what's funny.

  1125. I love this, right?

1126. Some of you guys have been around a long

1127. time with us and feel like you're family.

1128. Some of you're newer to our family.

1129. And unfortunately for you guys,

1130. you feel like you're family too.

1131. Uh, you fit right in, which I don't

  1132. know if that's a compliment, but,

1133. uh, it's really, really fun to have

1134. you guys be a part of this time

  1135. together, of celebrating, making

1136. a commitment to being part of this

1137. church family, uh, for each of these

1138. families that are represented up here.

1139. Um, you guys have talked through your

1140. confession of Jesus as Lord and savior of

1141. your life and acknowledge that publicly.

1142. And, uh, some of you were dripping

1143. wet just a few minutes ago on

1144. this stage, I feel like, and

1145. baptism and that was super cool.

1146. But, uh, we're excited to welcome

1147. you guys in as people who wanna make

1148. a commitment to help serve and love

1149. and be a part of what we're doing.

1150. So thank you guys for

1151. being willing to do that.

  1152. Yes, absolutely.

  1153. Absolutely.

1154. I actually wanted to say

  1155. something really quick.

1156. I don't know why we've never used it as

1157. the church family verse, but, um, in, uh,

1158. one Peter two nine and it talks about a

1159. peculiar people and, um, but I do love

1160. our White Rock family and the things that

1161. I heard in the worship songs today, um,

1162. we're talking about God being holy and set

1163. apart and or set apart is what holy is.

  1164. And that's what, when we're his

1165. kids, we look different to the

1166. world and we are a peculiar people.

1167. And I do feel like White Rock resembles

1168. that sometimes more than others, but,

1169. um, but also the theme prepare the way.

1170. And we're living in some crazy days

1171. right now, guys with a lot of brokenness.

1172. And we are to be the people

1173. that show the way and show.

1174. Um, how, how God wants us

1175. to handle what comes at us.

1176. So, um, that was in my head and yeah.

  1177. Fantastic.

1178. Before we start the next part.

  1179. Fantastic, fantastic.

1180. She married a peculiar guy, so

1181. that's probably our vice versa.

  1182. Home too.

  1183. I did.

1184. Well, something special that we like to

1185. do as we close together this morning.

1186. Uh, we're gonna go through the

1187. 10 pillars of this love pledge

1188. that we have at White Rock.

1189. If you've been a part of membership

1190. before, we have this posted out by our

1191. coffee board, our coffee wall, coffee

1192. on the wall board, something like that.

1193. And these 10 things are just

  1194. kind of some principles.

1195. We try to live out love

1196. in the way that we engage.

1197. And so Jamie's gonna read through those.

1198. And, uh, at the close of that, we're

1199. gonna invite you to come join these

1200. people up here and pray over 'em

1201. and, uh, get you onto the exciting

1202. annual meeting that's coming soon.

  1203. Okay?

  1204. All right.

1205. Number one, I accept you as you are.

1206. There's nothing that you have done or

1207. will do that will make me stop loving you.

1208. Number two, I will not sit in judgment

1209. of you, whatever I hear about you.

1210. Number three, I will not judge your

1211. motives, whatever appearances may seem

1212. believing the best about you always.

1213. Number four, I will not say

1214. anything unkind about you anytime,

1215. anywhere, nor will I listen to

1216. others speaking unkindly about you.

1217. You can count on my full support.

1218. Number five, I will endeavor to become a

1219. more open person, disclosing my feelings

1220. and thoughts as well as I am able.

1221. The degree to which I do so implies that

1222. I cannot make it without you, that I trust

1223. you with my needs and that I need you.

1224. Number six, I may not always agree with

1225. your action or thinking, but I will

1226. love you as a person and will not be

1227. offended when we may differ over ideas.

1228. Number seven, even as I desire to be

1229. known and understood by you, I covenant

1230. to be sensitive to you and your needs.

1231. I will try to hear you, see you and

1232. feel where you are to draw you outta

1233. your pit of discouragement and withdraw.

1234. Number eight, whenever a problem

1235. develops, I will endeavor to initiate

1236. constructive dialogue with you that

1237. we may understand each other and not

1238. let our relationship become clouded.

1239. Number nine, I covenant to pray for

1240. you, our church and our church board

1241. in some regular manner, believing that

1242. our Lord desires his people to pray for

1243. one another, bury each other's burdens,

1244. and thus fulfill the law of Christ.

1245. Number 10, desiring to build a fellowship

1246. of love at White Rock Fellowship.

1247. I pledge to do my best with God's

1248. help to be the loving person

1249. to you that God wants me to be.

1250. I will do all that I can to

1251. hold you up in affirming love.

1252. I will tell you often that

1253. I love you beginning now.

  1254. Yep.

1255. We love you guys and we love all of you.

1256. And you guys do an incredible

1257. job of trying to live out love.

  1258. These 10 principles aren't easy in

1259. practice all the time, and we don't

1260. always get 'em perfect, but we strive

1261. to be people who genuinely love in

1262. the way that Jesus called us to love.

1263. And that's always been the DNA and the

1264. heartbeat of how we roll as a church.

1265. And I think it overcomes and it

1266. fights through a lot of stuff that

1267. the enemy does and wants to do.

  1268. 'cause here's the secret

  1269. truth behind it all.

1270. Love is more powerful than evil and

1271. it's more powerful than the enemy.

1272. And when we walk in that and don't

1273. get sidetracked and there is nothing

1274. greater, greater is he that is in

1275. me than he that is in the world.

1276. So we are super excited for you

1277. families who are joining us here today.

1278. We love all of you guys.

1279. Uh, now all of a sudden we're

1280. gonna look at you different

1281. 'cause of your new status.

  1282. Just kidding.

  1283. Not really.

1284. And please forgive me if I forget

1285. you joined next year when I'm like,

1286. Hey, did you guys do membership yet?

1287. Because it's very meaningful to me.

1288. No, I love, I love that you guys have

1289. been willing to sit through a really

1290. exciting class as well as just be

1291. willing to stand before your friends

1292. here at White Rock and, and make a

1293. commitment to being part of this family.

  1294. So thank you.

  1295. That's a really special thing.

1296. I wanna invite the whole church to come up

1297. as you want to, and we're gonna surround

1298. these guys and we're gonna lay hands on

1299. each other and pray for each other, Jamie.

  1300. And I'll, we'll all just close

1301. this in prayer as we do that.

  1302. And, uh,

  1303. All right.

1304. So no, uh, no, no pressure

  1305. and no weird stuff.

1306. Just, uh, the Bible says we're to lay

1307. hands on one another and pray for one

1308. another, and we want to do that together.

1309. And if you didn't make it all the

1310. way up here, that's totally great.

  1311. No worries.

1312. Uh, just wherever you're at, join

1313. me, if you would, and praying, uh, a

1314. blessing over these families and thanking

1315. the Lord for all of his goodness.

  1316. Here we go.

1317. Father, thank you so much, just

1318. for your incredible love for us and

1319. this really awesome church family.

1320. Uh, just Jamie and I are so blessed

1321. to just get to be a part of it

1322. and, uh, God, just so thankful for

1323. how well, uh, everybody here just

1324. strives to try to walk in love.

1325. And Lord, thank you that even when

1326. our flesh gets in the way and we

1327. run into struggles with sin or just

1328. personality things and we just, Lord,

1329. we're just people, thank you Lord,

1330. that, uh, the depth of relationship

1331. that we have with you and how that

  1332. translates with our relationship.

1333. Between each other here, Lord, that we're

1334. able to walk through all those things

1335. and find hope and life and joy and stay

1336. on mission for what you've called us to.

1337. God thank you for these families who've

1338. stood up here before this congregation

1339. today, making clear their intent to commit

1340. to being part of this church family.

1341. Not at all for some status or some extra

1342. tear of spiritual, uh, just alignment with

1343. you, but rather Lord, a faithfulness to

1344. say, I wanna serve and I want to help,

1345. and I wanna be a good steward, and I wanna

1346. lock into the truth of your word, Lord.

1347. And I want to be a part of what's

1348. going on and bring who I am to

1349. this family and to this body.

1350. And so God, I pray for each of

1351. these families that, uh, you would

1352. help them find amazing fulfillment

1353. and purpose and joy in serving.

1354. In ways that they get to connect

1355. and experience using their gifts

1356. in ministry to the body of Christ.

1357. And Lord, I pray that they would

1358. feel incredible love and belonging,

1359. Lord, that they would find just a

1360. cool sense of family here for them.

  1361. Um, that's eternal.

1362. Thank you so much, Jesus, that you invite

1363. us into relationship, that we can confess

1364. or sin to you, and that we can repent and

1365. that you make our hearts clean before you.

1366. And God, please help us to continue

1367. to chase after you as Lord and Savior.

1368. And Lord, thank you that we're able

1369. to love because you first loved us.

1370. And help us just demonstrate that in

1371. all the actions and attitudes of our

1372. heart in this day and in the week ahead.

1373. In Jesus' name we pray.

  1374. Amen.

  1375. Amen.
