  1. People have different reactions to snow,

  2. right? Um, some people love snow.

  3. They're just just so excited. They want

  4. to build snowmen and they want to drink

  5. the hot cocoa with the marshmallows. And

  6. then you have me who I hate snow. I

  7. don't like it at all. All I think of is

  8. I got to shovel that. Um, and the

  9. reality is is that I don't know two of

  10. the of greater fans of snow than my two

  11. dogs. My two dogs love snow. And so

  12. Ruby, I walked my one dog Ruby today.

  13. walked her outside on her leash and

  14. she's so excited about the snow and it's

  15. cute, right? They they're jumping

  16. around. She's three years old. They're

  17. jumping around the snow. It's very cute.

  18. It's wonderful. It's it's it's great.

  19. So, I take her inside. I dry her off. I

  20. put on my coat. Um, and I'm getting

  21. ready to leave so I can come here. And

  22. so I open the door and as the door is

  23. closing,

  24. Ruby jets out of the house and she just

  25. runs leaping and jumping around in the

  26. snow and not listening to me at all.

  27. And so she runs down the street. Runs

  28. down the street. She runs down the

  29. street and she runs towards a park and

  30. she's hiding behind bushes and she's not

  31. listening to me at all. and she doesn't

  32. like this coat that I'm wearing

  33. normally. So, I'm like, "Okay." She gets

  34. kind of scared of this green puffy coat.

  35. So, I take the coat off and I throw it.

  36. That didn't do anything. And she's

  37. running and running and running. It's

  38. like 15 minutes. 15 minutes. I'm chasing

  39. this dog through the snow. And finally,

  40. she just gets into the middle of the

  41. basketball court and just sits there

  42. waiting for me to get her cuz she was

  43. done. She was ready. I have to carry her

  44. back to the house and my and and I bring

  45. her back to the house and I'm soaked

  46. from the wet dog and my wife greets her

  47. and she's just like, "Wasn't that so

  48. much fun?" And she's just like, "You're

  49. having a wonderful time." And that is

  50. not what I was thinking at all. I was

  51. thinking two things. The first thing I

  52. was thinking was,

  53. "Someone better have an asthma inhaler

  54. right now. That's what I want because I

  55. can't breathe at all and I am out of

  56. shape." And then the second thing I was

  57. thinking was

  58. all y'all in this house are crazy.

  59. That's what I was starting to think. And

  60. speaking of crazy,

  61. we're 11 days away from Christmas.

  62. That's crazy. We're 11 days away from

  63. Christmas.

  64. And what happens often in Christmas time

  65. is that we get caught up in the

  66. craziness, right? We get caught up in in

  67. the busyiness and the hecticness and we

  68. lose sight of the point and purpose of

  69. Christmas.

  70. You know, we just finished a story. We

  71. just finished a series called the story

  72. where we looked at the whole story of

  73. the Bible.

  74. And what we said was the point and

  75. purpose of the story is this. The point

  76. of the story is Jesus. And the purpose

  77. is to draw us to him, to bring us to

  78. him. The reality is is that the point

  79. and purpose of Christmas is Jesus and

  80. the purpose is to bring us to him. And

  81. so what we want to do this few weeks

  82. leading up to Christmas is pause for a

  83. little bit. Slow down in the midst of

  84. the craziness. Slow down in the midst of

  85. the hecticness

  86. and just focus on the purpose of

  87. Christmas. And so what we're going to do

  88. is look at the story of Christmas

  89. through the eyes of different

  90. characters. And so today we're going to

  91. look at the story of Christmas through

  92. the eyes of Zechariah and Elizabeth. So

  93. we're going to look at Luke chapter 1.

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  94. Luke chapter 1 says this. Okay, starting

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  95. at verse 5.

  96. In the time of Herod, king of Judea,

  97. there was a priest named Zachariah who

  98. belonged to the priestly division of

  99. Abijah. His wife Elizabeth was also a

  100. descendant of Aaron. Both of them were

  101. righteous in the sight of God. observing

  102. all the Lord's commands and decrees

  103. blamelessly, but they were childless

  104. because Elizabeth was not able to

  105. conceive and they were both very old.

  106. So, here's what's going on.

  107. It starts off by talking about a king

  108. named Herod.

  109. And when we mention Herod, what we need

  110. to understand is what that means. Herod

  111. was a bad guy. He was he was a king. He

  112. was horrible. He was crazy. He He killed

  113. several of his family members, including

  114. uh some of his kids. He It was a time

  115. that was scary. It was a time that was

  116. uh chaotic. This was not a good time. It

  117. was actually one of those dark moments

  118. for people.

  119. And not only that, what's happened is we

  120. have the Bible and we just went through

  121. the story and what you have is the first

  122. part is the Old Testament. And then what

  123. we just read is the New Testament, the

  124. second part of the Bible. And when the

  125. Old Testament ends and we get through

  126. this, there's about 400 years

  127. where there's no prophecies from God.

  128. It's like God is just silent. He's

  129. there. It's not like God is gone. He's

  130. present through all the time, but

  131. there's no prophecies. And so, the

  132. people are saying that he's silent. It's

  133. a dark time. God seems to be silent. And

  134. this is where the people of Israel are.

  135. Not only that, what do we see with

  136. Zechariah and Elizabeth? They're going

  137. through their own difficult time. They

  138. don't have children

  139. and they want children. It's it's a

  140. desire deep inside of them and they

  141. don't have children.

  142. And during that time, what the culture

  143. would think is if you are not able to

  144. have children, then something is either

  145. wrong with you or you've done something

  146. wrong, you must have done something to

  147. cause this. But that's not what Luke

  148. says, right? Luke says they were

  149. righteous. They were good. And he

  150. corrects that and saying this is not

  151. about something that they did. This is

  152. just God's decision.

  153. They didn't do anything wrong. There's

  154. nothing wrong with them. This is just

  155. what God has for them.

  156. And in the midst of all of this stuff

  157. going on with the people in Israel of

  158. just this dark time under Hera, in the

  159. midst of Zachchariah and Elizabeth and

  160. their own pain and and and all of this

  161. stuff happening

  162. and God is silent, it could feel like

  163. God forgot us.

  164. And what we see in these verses is that

  165. God remembers his people.

  166. Not only were Zachariah and Elizabeth

  167. good people, but they were connected to

  168. a good position. Zachchariah is a priest

  169. and and by linking him to Abijah, what

  170. he's saying is that he's part of a

  171. priestly lineage. Abijah's in first

  172. Chronicles and and so it just says this

  173. is Zachariah and his family's been doing

  174. it. He's part of this whole lineage and

  175. he's part of this priesthood. And then

  176. Elizabeth is from the descendency of

  177. Aaron. also is part of this lineage.

  178. They're good people from good families

  179. from good history

  180. and yet they seem to be forgotten.

  181. But God remembers his people.

  182. And one of the ways that Luke explains

  183. this is by just telling us their names.

  184. Zachchariah and Elizabeth.

  185. Do you know what Zechariah means?

  186. Zachchariah means God remembers.

  187. God remembers. Do you know what

  188. Elizabeth means? It means God is my oath

  189. or God keeps his promises. And so into

  190. the midst of this crazy situation with

  191. crazy things going on, a dark dark

  192. moment, we are introduced to two people,

  193. a married couple. Let me introduce you

  194. to God remembers and God keeps his

  195. promises.

  196. What's going on is that before God acts

  197. through Jesus, he reminds his people, I

  198. have not forgotten you.

  199. I am faithful and I will keep my word.

  200. In the midst of all of the craziness,

  201. God takes a moment to say, I have not

  202. forgotten you.

  203. I'm going to keep my promise.

  204. And then what God does

  205. is that he reveals his plan. And we see

  206. that in Luke chapter 1 starting at verse

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  207. 8.

  208. In verse 8, it says, "Once when

  209. Zachariah's division was on duty and he

  210. was serving as priest before God, he was

  211. chosen by a lot according to the custom

  212. of the priesthood to go into the temple

  213. of the Lord and burn incense." And when

  214. the time of burning of incense came, all

  215. the assembled worshippers were praying

  216. outside.

  217. Then an angel of the Lord appeared to

  218. him standing at the right side of the

  219. altar of incense. When Zachariah saw

  220. him, he was startled and was gripped

  221. with fear.

  222. But the angel said to him, "Do not be

  223. afraid, Zachariah. Your prayer has been

  224. heard.

  225. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son,

  226. and you are to call him John. He will be

  227. a joy and delight to you, and many will

  228. rejoice because of his birth, for he

  229. will be great in the sight of the Lord.

  230. He is never to take wine or other

  231. fermented drink. And he will be filled

  232. with the Holy Spirit even before he is

  233. born. He will bring back many of the

  234. people of Israel to the Lord their God.

  235. And he will go on before the Lord in the

  236. spirit and power of Elijah to turn the

  237. hearts of the parents to their children

  238. and the disobedient to the wisdom of the

  239. righteous to make ready a people

  240. prepared for the Lord.

  241. Zachariah asked the angel,

  242. "How can I be sure of this?

  243. I'm an old man and my wife is well along

  244. in years. The angel said to him, I am

  245. Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God

  246. and I have been sent to speak to you and

  247. to tell you this good news. And now you

  248. will be silent and not able to speak

  249. until the day this happens because you

  250. did not believe my words which will come

  251. true at their appointed time.

  252. Meanwhile, the people were waiting for

  253. Zachariah and wondering why he stayed so

  254. long in the temple. When he came out, he

  255. could not speak to them. They realized

  256. he had seen a vision in in the temple,

  257. for he kept making signs to them, but

  258. remained unable to speak. When his time

  259. of service was completed, he returned

  260. home. After this, his wife Elizabeth

  261. became pregnant and for 5 months

  262. remained in seclusion. The Lord has done

  263. this for me, she said. In these days, he

  264. has shown his favor and taken away my

  265. disgrace among the people.

  266. So what's happening here is that

  267. Zachchariah is chosen to go and burn the

  268. incest. And what you need to understand

  269. is that this didn't happen to everyone.

  270. It didn't happen often. There's about 18

  271. to 20,000 priests at this time.

  272. And the the chance the chance of someone

  273. being chosen to go burn incense, it's a

  274. once-in-a-lifetime chance because what

  275. happened was is that it was chosen

  276. randomly. It was chosen by lots and

  277. often times people live their whole life

  278. and they never were given this chance to

  279. do that.

  280. God selects his people

  281. and Zachchariah is selected. It's it's

  282. it's like it's like a winning the

  283. lottery. It's this once in a-lifetime

  284. thing and Zachariah is selected

  285. and this blessing that Zachariah has he

  286. I just can't imagine like it's just like

  287. he's he's he's getting ready. He's

  288. selected and he's going over there and

  289. he's got to be filled with just all

  290. sorts of emotions like this is this is

  291. something that he's worked so hard for.

  292. He's been a part of he's been waiting

  293. for this and and finally he's been

  294. selected

  295. and all these thoughts are going on

  296. and he's thinking that God has blessed

  297. him.

  298. But this blessing is going to turn out

  299. to be so much more than what he thought,

  300. so much more than Zachariah ever

  301. imagined.

  302. Because an angel appears

  303. and and and reveals a promise, reveals

  304. God's plan. God reveals his plan

  305. through this angel.

  306. He says, "You're going to have a son.

  307. You're going to have a son,

  308. and you're going to name him John,

  309. and he will come in the spirit and power

  310. of Elijah."

  311. What's going on there?

  312. Well, what's going on with those words?

  313. He would come in the spirit and power of

  314. Elijah. Well, I said earlier that

  315. there's two parts of the Bible. There's

  316. the Old Testament and the New Testament.

  317. And I there was silence that happened

  318. for hundreds of years

  319. before God speaks into the New

  320. Testament.

  321. And the last book of the Old Testament

  322. is the book of Malachi.

  323. Listen to the words, the last verses of

  324. the last book of the Old Testament.

  325. Malachi 4:5, it says, "See, I will send

    Malachi 4:5

  326. the prophet Elijah to you before the

  327. great and dreadful day of the Lord

  328. comes. He will turn the hearts of the

  329. parents to their children and the hearts

  330. of the children to their parents, or

  331. else I will come and strike the land

  332. with total destruction."

  333. Let's go back to Luke

    Luke 1:1

  334. 1:1 16.

  335. He will bring back many of the people of

  336. Israel to the Lord their God. And he

  337. will go on before the Lord in the spirit

  338. and power of Elijah to turn the hearts

  339. of the parents to their children and the

  340. disobedience to the wisdom of the

  341. righteous to make ready a people

  342. prepared for the Lord. Did you catch

  343. that connection?

  344. You ever watch uh like a series on

  345. Netflix or or on a series on uh Disney

  346. Plus or any of those kind of streaming

  347. services? You ever watch that? And you

  348. get to like a se like it's a minieries.

  349. You get through season one. It ends on a

  350. cliffhanger, right? And you get to the

  351. point you're just like, "Oh,

  352. how is this going to be resolved?" And

  353. you have to wait and you have to wait

  354. and wait until season two happens. And

  355. when you get to season two,

  356. before it happens, what do they have? A

  357. recap.

  358. It brought you, it walks you through

  359. what happened in season one and bridges

  360. it and connects you to what's about to

  361. happen. What we just had was a recap.

  362. We get a recap of the whole Old

  363. Testament and the promise that we kind

  364. of leave off at with this this tension

  365. of what's about to happen.

  366. and it comes back in and God reveals

  367. how he's going to continue the story and

  368. fulfill his promise and execute and put

  369. into place his plan.

  370. This moment fulfills the ancient

  371. prophecy. God is stepping into the

  372. darkness once again, not just to bless

  373. the one family of Zachariah and

  374. Elizabeth. It's actually a bigger

  375. blessing.

  376. He's stepping in to move his redemption

  377. history forward.

  378. And how does Zechariah I have no clue

  379. how I'd respond if I was there and I I

  380. met an uh angel.

  381. Yeah, I'd probably be afraid. But what

  382. Zachariah does, he goes he hears this

  383. miraculous thing and he's like,

  384. "Yeah,

  385. how can I be certain that this is

  386. actually real? that this is how am I

  387. going to be certain that this is

  388. actually true? He responds with

  389. disbelief. It's interesting.

  390. The angel speaks to Zachchariah. Now,

  391. we're not talking about Mary today, but

  392. that same angel speaks to Mary. And

  393. Mary's response is different. Mary's

  394. response is, "How can this be?"

  395. Zachariah's a response of unbelief. He

  396. says, "How can I be certain this is

  397. true?" And Mary's, "How can this be?"

  398. And what we see here is that unbelief

  399. seeks control

  400. but faith seeks understanding.

  401. The response of Mary was one of belief

  402. and faith and the response of Zechariah

  403. was one of doubt and unbelief.

  404. So God is revealing his plan. And what

  405. the angel says is your prayer has been

  406. heard.

  407. your prayer has been heard.

  408. But there's more to that statement

  409. because if we were to hear that, we need

  410. to ask ourselves

  411. which prayer

  412. which prayer was heard?

  413. It'd be simple to kind of just say,

  414. well, the prayer to have a child. So,

  415. they're now old and they're going to

  416. have a child. And

  417. it'd be simple to say that the prayer to

  418. have a child, and that is true. That was

  419. one of the prayers that was heard. But

  420. God is answering not just that prayer.

  421. He's answering

  422. Israel's centuries long prayer for a

  423. Messiah, a deliverer.

  424. You see, this prophet that was supposed

  425. to come in the spirit

  426. of Elijah was supposed to pave the way,

  427. was supposed to make the way.

  428. What God is saying is that your son John

  429. is going to be the one who makes a way

  430. for my Messiah that I'm sending for my

  431. deliverer.

  432. And this is the familiar plot of all the

  433. Bible where God's people are unfaithful

  434. and then God shows that he is faithful

  435. where everything seems to stall and

  436. everything is quiet and then God steps

  437. in in unexpected ways.

  438. And so God reveals his plan

  439. that he's going to bring a Messiah.

  440. And so then what happens is

  441. Zachariah's baby boy is born. John is

  442. born.

  443. Did you catch what happened earlier when

  444. we read Zachariah when he spoke this uh

  445. how can I be certain? The angel's

  446. response is okay you need to just be

  447. quiet. And he tells him, 'You cannot

  448. speak until the baby is born.

  449. And so Zachariah doesn't speak until

  450. John is born and until he actually

  451. writes on the tablet saying his name's

  452. going to be John. And as soon as they

  453. say his name is John, Zachariah's mouth

  454. opens up and he's allowed to talk.

  455. Listen to the words that he says.

  456. His son, his baby boy is just born.

  457. this baby boy that he longed for. This

  458. baby that he was hoping for,

  459. but his response, the first words out of

  460. his mouth are not about his baby boy.

  461. Actually, his first words out of his

  462. mouth are about God. Zachchariah sings a

  463. song. We see in Luke

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  464. chapter 1

  465. starting in verse 67

  466. it says his father Zachchariah was

  467. filled with the Holy Spirit and

  468. prophesied praise be to the Lord the God

  469. of Israel because he has come to his

  470. people and redeemed them. He has raised

  471. up a horn of salvation for us in the

  472. house of his servant David as he has

  473. said through his holy prophets of long

  474. ago. salvation from our enemies and from

  475. the hand of all who hate us to show

  476. mercy to our ancestors and to remember

  477. his holy covenant, the oath he swore to

  478. our father Abraham, to rescue us from

  479. the hand of our enemies and to enable us

  480. to serve him without fear in holiness

  481. and righteousness before him in all our

  482. days.

  483. What does he begin his when his mouth

  484. finally opens? What does he begin to

  485. talk about? He begins TO TALK ABOUT

  486. GOD'S faithfulness and keeping his

  487. promises. He talks about God's

  488. forgiveness of sins. He begins to talk

  489. about mercy and redemption. And what he

  490. does is he begins to sing a song that

  491. echoes all of the themes of the promises

  492. and pathways of the Old Testament.

  493. He begins to sing about all of these

  494. things. God's faithfulness, his

  495. forgiveness, his mercy.

  496. And this is all the themes of the Old

  497. Testament. And throughout the Old

  498. Testament, what's interesting is that

  499. God would use three kind of roles

  500. to proclaim these themes, to proclaim

  501. these promises.

  502. He would use a prophet. And a prophet

  503. would be used to speak God's word. He

  504. would use a priest who would be a a

  505. mediator uh uh who would be the one who

  506. mediated God uh um before God's presence

  507. in his people. And he would speak

  508. through a king who will rule God's

  509. people. There's a prophet, a priest, and

  510. a king.

  511. What's interesting is that Luke 1,

  512. there's shadows of all three of those

  513. roles.

  514. I said that we had Herod who was a king,

  515. a dark and corrupted king.

  516. We have Zachchariah who's a limited

  517. priest, expresses doubt.

  518. And then we have the baby John

  519. who is a prep a preparing prophet.

  520. And then God

  521. provides a twist.

  522. God provides a twist.

  523. The twist of Christmas is this. God

  524. himself comes to fulfill every role his

  525. people could not.

  526. We see in all of those how we see those

  527. imperfect shadows of a prophet, a priest

  528. and a king. And Jesus comes and Jesus is

  529. born and God rescues through his Messiah

  530. through Jesus. And Jesus is the true

  531. prophet not only speaking God's word but

  532. becoming the word made flesh. Jesus is

  533. the true priest both our mediator and

  534. the sacrifice offered to us. Jesus is

  535. the true king holding all authority yet

  536. conquering not by shedding the blood of

  537. others but by shedding his own blood.

  538. In Jesus the old testament is fulfilled.

  539. The recap of all the Old Testament is

  540. found in one expression.

  541. God

  542. coming forward in flesh as Jesus.

  543. The heart of Christmas is that God

  544. remembers and God reveals and God

  545. rescues through Jesus.

  546. And so I guess we're kind of left with

  547. then what do we do about that? How

  548. should we respond to all that?

  549. It's interesting. I I I talked about

  550. Ruby earlier and I had my day planned. I

  551. was going to get out a certain time,

  552. shovel a certain amount of the driveway,

  553. get in the car so I could get here at a

  554. certain time. I had a schedule. I had a

  555. plan.

  556. And everything got disrupted by

  557. something unexpected.

  558. Christmas usually brings about

  559. unexpected disruptions.

  560. We usually have plans and expectations

  561. of how everything should go.

  562. We know how we're going to have shopping

  563. going, how much time we're going to go

  564. have to take for that. And we know how

  565. if we're going to invite someone over,

  566. we know how the meal is going to go. We

  567. have all of these plans and

  568. expectations. But what usually happens

  569. is some sort of disruptance comes into

  570. Christmas.

  571. And all those things are are not the

  572. disruptions that Luke is talking about.

  573. What Luke is talking about is a much

  574. greater disruptance.

  575. You see, when Jesus steps into the

  576. story,

  577. everything changes.

  578. Everything changes.

  579. And when Jesus steps into your story,

  580. things change.

  581. The disrupt of Christmas is the disrupt

  582. of Jesus. It's a good disrupt. Takes us

  583. away from our own plans and our own

  584. ideas and replaces them with God's plan

  585. and God's presence through Jesus.

  586. And we offered this thought last week

  587. with Charles.

  588. If we are truly experiencing the story

  589. of Christmas,

  590. that has to include the disruptance of

  591. Jesus. And what that means is

  592. at some point your life had to change

  593. because of Jesus.

  594. And what we've said is if your life has

  595. never changed and maybe you're truly not

  596. experiencing

  597. Christmas.

  598. So the question that we need to ponder

  599. this week is this.

  600. What would it look like

  601. if God disrupted our lives with his

  602. grace? What would it look like to have

  603. our lives disrupted

  604. by the grace that Jesus provides?

  605. And I'm not just talking about

  606. that first disruption when you're kind

  607. of aware of Jesus and you've become a

  608. Christian and become someone who follows

  609. him. I'm talking about what would it

  610. look like if your daily life if you

  611. allow your eyes to be open to see the

  612. disruption of God's grace in your daily

  613. life.

  614. How would you respond

  615. to that disruption of grace?

  616. You see, the story of Christmas invites

  617. us not merely to adjust our behavior,

  618. but to trust the one who has already

  619. finished his work, Jesus Christ, our

  620. savior and king.

  621. What would it look like this Christmas

  622. if we lived our lives ready and willing

  623. to respond to the disruption of Jesus

  624. and the grace that he brings each and

  625. every day?

  626. I imagine that if we did that,

  627. we just might be able to bring that

  628. disruption

  629. to the lives of those around us in

  630. wonderful and amazing ways as well.

  631. Let's pray.

  632. Lord, we thank you for this day. We

  633. thank you for

  634. the disruption of Christmas.

  635. Zachariah and Elizabeth

  636. taught us

  637. that we are not forgotten,

  638. but that you remember us and are

  639. faithful to your promises

  640. and that you have a plan, a plan to

  641. redeem us through your son, Jesus.

  642. Lord, I ask you that this Christmas that

  643. that would be

  644. something that is revealed in our hearts

  645. in new and profound ways

  646. as we go about

  647. proclaiming the good news of not just

  648. the Christmas story but the good news of

  649. the gospel

  650. to each and everyone we come in contact

  651. with. We pray this in Jesus name. Amen.
