  1. Uh so today we start a new series. We

  2. start a series on the book of Hebrews.

  3. Uh so we're taking a look at the book of

  4. Hebrews. And what we're going to do uh

  5. over the next several weeks is basically

  6. we're going to kind of look at a chapter

  7. each week. And Hebrews is a very rich

  8. book. Uh it's a deep book. Uh it's a

  9. complicated book at times. And here's

  10. the thing about Hebrews. We really don't

  11. know who wrote it.

  12. We there's like different theories that

  13. are out there about who but we really

  14. don't know who wrote it and we actually

  15. don't know who it was written to.

  16. The reality is is that Hebrews is a

  17. little bit different than some of the

  18. other New Testament books that you would

  19. read uh because a lot of those other New

  20. Testament books are letters and when you

  21. read them they have a certain kind of uh

  22. flow that they begin with and that's not

  23. the way with Hebrews. Hebrews actually

  24. doesn't read like a letter. It actually

  25. reads more like a sermon. Uh it's it's

  26. as if you're reading a sermon

  27. manuscript.

  28. And and the person who's who wrote the

  29. the book of Hebrews uh writes this

  30. sermon with basically like this

  31. assumption of knowledge. Uh while we

  32. don't know who it's written to, we kind

  33. of think that it was written to uh

  34. Christians who had some sort of Jewish

  35. background. so some sort of

  36. understanding, some sort of deep

  37. understanding because the person who

  38. wrote it has a deep understanding of

  39. Jewish background and doesn't go uh out

  40. of his way to explain when he just drops

  41. this Old Testament references. He just

  42. drops them out of context. Uh there's a

  43. scholar George Guthrie who points out

  44. that there are 35 quotations in the book

  45. of Hebrews of the Old Testament. There

  46. are 19 summaries of the Old Testament

  47. material and 13 times he mentions his

  48. Old Testament name or topic. This guy

  49. knows his Old Testament and he assumes

  50. that you know it as well. And so he

  51. writes this sermon that way. Now

  52. regardless of who he's writing it to,

  53. regardless if uh it is uh Jewish

  54. Christians or Jewish background

  55. Christians, regardless of who he's

  56. writing to, what he's doing is he's

  57. writing to a group that have been going

  58. through a difficult time.

  59. uh they were persecuted or they're

  60. feeling pressure and and and what's

  61. going on is that they're starting to get

  62. tired and they're starting to get weary

  63. out of all this pressure and they begin

  64. to feel this temptation to just just

  65. drift a little bit. They're just feeling

  66. this temptation to kind of just drift.

  67. They're they're they're walking this

  68. path trying to follow Jesus and then the

  69. pressure happens and they just start to

  70. feel a pressure to kind of drift a

  71. little bit.

  72. And what that means is that they begin

  73. to try to drift towards what they used

  74. to know. They they try to drift towards

  75. uh ceremonial rituals or ceremonial

  76. sacrifices or to the old Jewish way.

  77. They start to try to drift to what life

  78. was like beforehand. Because what's

  79. happening, this temptation to drift is

  80. occurring because life is so difficult.

  81. Following Jesus has become so difficult

  82. that they're beginning to wonder, is

  83. Jesus even worth it? Is Jesus even worth

  84. this life, this this this dedicated life

  85. towards him? And they they feel that

  86. temptation to drift. They weren't

  87. rejecting him. They were just tempted to

  88. drift a little bit.

  89. Now, we might feel that temptation to

  90. drift at time. You might be going

  91. through a difficult time. You might be

  92. going through some times that are hard

  93. and you might feel that temptation to

  94. drift a little bit.

  95. Now, I I highly doubt that your

  96. temptation to drift, it's a se

  97. ceremonious ceremonious rituals of

  98. animal sacrifice. I highly I if you do

  99. feel that temptation to drift, we should

  100. probably talk later. Um, but what do we

  101. drift to, right? We drift to other

  102. things at that point. We start to drift

  103. towards

  104. the way things used to be or maybe some

  105. cultural norms that you used to do or

  106. different identities that you used to

  107. have or just different things that you

  108. had before knowing you start to try to

  109. drift to that. I'm wondering like, okay,

  110. is Jesus really worth following him this

  111. way or do I need to I just feel this

  112. temptation to drift drift back to

  113. things? And Hebrews responds to this

  114. temptation to drift not with shame, not

  115. with pressure,

  116. but with clarity.

  117. With clarity. The author of Hebrews is

  118. like, "Okay, you want to know if Jesus

  119. is worth it? Well, what I'm going to do

  120. is I'm going to lift your eyes up and

  121. I'm going to provide clarity to tell you

  122. who Jesus is and just why he is worth

  123. it. There's a a scholar named Michael

  124. Krueger and he writes a he writes a book

  125. on Hebrews and he summarizes the entire

  126. book the entire book into three words

  127. into three words and the three words are

  128. this

  129. Jesus is better.

  130. The entire book of Hebrews is summarized

  131. by Krueger into three words. Jesus is

  132. better. He's better than anything that

  133. we could be tempted to drift towards.

  134. And we're going to unpack that a little

  135. bit today. So, let's jump jump into the

  136. book of Hebrews. Okay. So, if you have a

  137. Bible, turn to Hebrews chapter 1. Uh if

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  138. you don't own a Bible, uh feel free to

  139. take one of the ones that we have here.

  140. Uh take it home. It's our gift to you.

  141. We believe that the Bible is filled with

  142. life-changing truth and we want you to

  143. have access to that truth. So, if you're

  144. using one of the Bibles that we have

  145. here at Calvary, turn to page 817.

  146. Hebrews chapter 1, starting at verse 1.

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  147. In the past,

  148. God spoke to our ancestors through the

  149. prophets at many times and in various

  150. ways.

  151. But in these last days, he has spoken to

  152. us by his son, whom he appointed heir of

  153. all things, and through whom also he

  154. made the universe.

  155. The son is the radiance of God's glory

  156. and the exact representation of his

  157. being, sustaining all things by his

  158. powerful word. After he had provided

  159. purification for sins, he sat down at

  160. the right hand of the majesty in heaven.

  161. So he became as much superior to the

  162. angels as the name he has inherited is

  163. superior to theirs.

  164. Okay, here's the big idea for the sermon

  165. today. Okay, here's the big idea.

  166. Because Jesus is God's final word,

  167. supreme son and reigning king, there is

  168. no one and nothing better to trust,

  169. follow, or return to. You got that?

  170. Because Jesus is God's final word,

  171. supreme son, and reigning king. There is

  172. no one and nothing better to trust,

  173. follow, or return to.

  174. And the author of Hebrews unpacks this

  175. very unpacks this big idea throughout

  176. the book by answering three questions

  177. consistently as we go through the

  178. different chapters. And the three

  179. questions are this. Who is Jesus? What

  180. has Jesus done? And why does this

  181. matter? Who is Jesus? What has Jesus

  182. done? And why does this matter? So,

  183. let's take a look at that first

  184. question. How do what do we see in

  185. Hebrews 1? What do we see in Hebrews 1

  186. in regards to answering that first

  187. question? Who is Jesus? Who is Jesus?

  188. Well, as we look at chapter 1, the first

  189. thing that we need to understand is

  190. this. Jesus is God's final and full

  191. revelation. Jesus is God's final and

  192. full revelation. Here's what I mean by

  193. that. Okay?

  194. God has expressed himself throughout the

  195. entirety of the history of mankind. The

  196. throughout the entirety of the history

  197. of humanity. He's expressed himself.

  198. He's spoken. He's revealed himself

  199. throughout that entire history.

  200. When he first created and everything was

  201. good, he revealed himself by giving us

  202. access to himself. And so we live in

  203. community with him and we are aware of

  204. who he is. But when the fall happened,

  205. when sin entered the world, when God is

  206. rejected, that access is now denied. And

  207. so God chose not to leave us alone. But

  208. he continued to reveal himself by

  209. speaking to us through his prophets,

  210. through scripture, through visions,

  211. through prophecies,

  212. through dreams. God revealed himself

  213. throughout the entirety of the Old

  214. Testament.

  215. And he reveals himself

  216. in partial ways. Partial ways. Every

  217. word is true, but he doesn't reveal

  218. himself in his entirety because

  219. everything that he's speaking, every

  220. revelation of himself that is happening

  221. is pointing forwards pointing forwards

  222. to Jesus.

  223. But then in Hebrews 1, what do we see

  224. here? We see but in these last days he

  225. has spoken to us by his son.

  226. God reveals himself in a new and unique

  227. way. He reveals himself through Jesus.

  228. Jesus

  229. is not just another messenger in a long

  230. line of messengers for God. He is the

  231. message. He is the message.

  232. He does not merely deliver God's word.

  233. He is God's word made flesh.

  234. And then the author of Hebrews goes into

  235. that even more um in in depth. He says,

  236. "The sun is the radiance of God's glory

  237. and exact representation of his being."

  238. That is a huge statement. It's a huge

  239. statement that we can't miss and it's

  240. very rich. Let me explain what's going

  241. on there.

  242. This past Father's Day, I got to preach

  243. with my my dad. I've never done that

  244. before. It was great. I really enjoyed

  245. that. Uh I'll never take for granted

  246. that I had that opportunity. And we had

  247. a little bit of fun with it, my dad and

  248. I. We had a little bit of fun with it.

  249. We decided uh that we would dress alike.

  250. So, we wear the same shirt and we wore

  251. the same kind of uh jeans. And I talked

  252. him into actually I didn't talk him into

  253. it. I bought because it was Father's

  254. Day. I bought him a pair of sneakers

  255. that were like mine and I said, "Hey,

  256. it's Father's Day. Here's my gift to

  257. you. Now you got to wear that when we go

  258. preach when he walked into here."

  259. That was the only time he ever wore

  260. them. Um,

  261. but we dress like and my dad and I,

  262. we're similar, you know, we're we're

  263. very similar. We we both wear glasses.

  264. Uh, we're both

  265. um

  266. we're both hair challenged.

  267. you know, hair is not an easy thing for

  268. us. Um, but but we're just similar.

  269. We're also different. Uh, my dad is 5'4

  270. on a good day.

  271. Uh, we're we're different in a lot of

  272. ways, but we're very I'm very we're very

  273. similar. I'm very similar to my dad.

  274. That's not what the author of Hebrews is

  275. saying. What is he saying?

  276. It's the radiance of God's glory and the

  277. exact representation of his being.

  278. The exact representation of his being.

  279. Jesus is not similar to God.

  280. Jesus is God.

  281. He's not similar to God. He is God. He

  282. is of the same essence and of the same

  283. glory. To see Jesus is to see God.

  284. >> Amen.

  285. And so this final and full revelation

  286. is brought to us by God himself in the

  287. form of Jesus the son.

  288. But the other thing that we learn about

  289. who Jesus is in Hebrews 1 is that Jesus

  290. is the supreme son over all creation.

  291. Look at some of the stuff in verse 2 and

  292. three. What does it say? through whom

  293. also he made the universe in verse three

  294. sustaining all things by his powerful

  295. word.

  296. What's happening here?

  297. Jesus stands at the center of all that

  298. exists. It gets unpacked a little bit

  299. more in verses 10-2 which says he also

  300. says in the beginning Lord talking about

  301. the son talking about Jesus. In the

  302. beginning Lord you laid the foundations

  303. of the earth and the heavens are the

  304. work of your hands. They will perish,

  305. but you remain. They will all wear out

  306. like a garment. You will roll them up

  307. like a robe. Like a garment, they will

  308. be changed, but you remain the same, and

  309. your years will never end.

  310. God created everything through the sun.

  311. And the sun continues to sustain all

  312. things by his powerful word.

  313. Jesus is not simply part of history. He

  314. is the reason history exists at all. And

  315. this is not the first time that we hear

  316. this concept. This is not the first time

  317. we hear this concept in the Bible. This

  318. truth. Actually, John in his gospel

  319. begins his book the exact same way. John

    John 1 chapter mention

  320. chapter 1. In the beginning was the

  321. word. The word is referring to the son.

  322. And the word was with God. And the word

  323. was God. He was with God in the

  324. beginning. Through him all things were

  325. made. Without him nothing was made that

  326. has been made.

  327. Like John, Hebrews begins with creation.

  328. Hebrews begins with the creation account

  329. just like the book of John and is done

  330. to make a theological point. Jesus can

  331. only be rightly understood when he is

  332. placed at the center of God's entire

  333. redemptive story.

  334. Jesus is not a new story.

  335. He is the fulfillment of God's

  336. redemptive story. He is the completion

  337. of God's redemptive story. He is the

  338. center of God's redemptive story. In

  339. order to understand Jesus, you have to

  340. understand that he is placed at the

  341. center of God's entire redemptive story.

  342. And what we need to understand is that

  343. everything came into existence because

  344. of the son. Everything continues to

  345. exist because of him.

  346. And if Jesus is the creator and the and

  347. the sustainer, then what that leads us

  348. to understand is that he is superior

  349. to everything that depends on him. So he

  350. is superior to all of creation.

  351. What's another way of saying that?

  352. What's another way of telling us that

  353. Jesus is superior? Jesus is better.

  354. He is better.

  355. And as the author is writing to a group

  356. that is tending to try to drift, is this

  357. tempting to be drifting towards other

  358. stuff, the author reminds him that Jesus

  359. is superior to everything and he is

  360. better.

  361. And then he moves from the question of

  362. who Jesus is to the next question. What

  363. has Jesus done? What has Jesus done?

  364. Well, the first thing that he points out

  365. is that Jesus has accomplished complete

  366. redemption.

  367. Jesus has accomplished complete

  368. redemption. Let me explain to you what

  369. we mean by that.

  370. When we go back into Hebrews, what does

  371. it say? After he had provided

  372. purification for sins, he sat down at

  373. the right hand of the majesty in heaven.

  374. This is huge.

  375. There are details in that sentence that

  376. are huge. Let's unpack it a little bit.

  377. When uh when my kids were young, we used

  378. to go to Lancaster. Um okay, growing up

  379. in New York, I never called it that. It

  380. was called Lancaster.

  381. All of you say it wrong. So, we would go

  382. to Lancaster. Uh and out there there is

  383. uh um this replica of the tabernacle

  384. uh from the Old Testament. If you read

  385. the Old Testament talks about the

  386. tabernacle was a place of worship for

  387. the Israelites. They made a replica in

  388. Lancaster that you can go and visit and

  389. they they just kind of tell you about

  390. it. They explain it to you. And so I

  391. remember taking the kids to go see it

  392. and it's really fascinating. You kind of

  393. get to see how things are done and all

  394. those things. And here's the thing that

  395. you will notice if you go there. If you

  396. go and visit the the tabernacle, you

  397. know what's not there inside the

  398. tabernacle?

  399. Chairs.

  400. I mean, you have chairs on the outside

  401. as you're kind of looking in for you to

  402. sit. So, you can sit down and watch it

  403. because some of you were like, I'm not

  404. going then. But no, but there's no

  405. chairs inside.

  406. You know why there's no chairs inside?

  407. Because there was no chairs in the

  408. tabernacle. You know why? Because the

  409. priest never sat down.

  410. Because the work was never done.

  411. The priest did not sit down because the

  412. work was never done. There was always a

  413. need

  414. for their work to continue because there

  415. was continuously sin that was occurring.

  416. Not just in the people but in their own

  417. lives. There was continuously a need for

  418. the work of the priests, a work for the

  419. sacrifices because the work had to

  420. continue.

  421. But Jesus is different

  422. because in the old covenant priests

  423. never sat down. Their work was never

  424. finished. But Jesus

  425. Jesus didn't need a sacrifice for his

  426. own sins. He was perfect.

  427. Not only was he perfect, he offered the

  428. one perfect sacrifice that could be

  429. offered

  430. himself.

  431. Himself.

  432. Therefore, there was no need for

  433. repetition.

  434. Therefore, there was no need for

  435. additional supplements. Therefore, there

  436. was no need for any improvements. He

  437. offered the perfect sacrifice in himself

  438. and he sat down

  439. because the work was finished.

  440. The work was finished.

  441. This seated posture declares completion.

  442. The work is done.

  443. God's justice is satisfied. Sin is dealt

  444. with. Access to God is secured. It is

  445. finished.

  446. It is finished.

  447. But did you notice where he sits?

  448. Because his seated posture does not just

  449. convey completion, it conveys authority.

  450. He sits at the right hand of the

  451. majesty, the place of royal authority.

  452. Jesus is our savior and he is our king.

  453. He is our king. What else does Jesus do?

  454. Jesus reigns as king.

  455. We see that uh in uh Hebrews 1:8. It

    Hebrews 1:8

  456. says, "But about the sun, he says, 'Your

  457. throne, oh God, will last forever and

  458. ever. A scepter of justice will be the

  459. scepter of your kingdom." Jesus reigns

  460. as king. And the author of Hebrews does

  461. something really interesting in this

  462. chapter

  463. because what the author of Hebrews is

  464. doing throughout the book is pointing

  465. out that Jesus is better, Jesus is

  466. superior. And when he brings up this

  467. concept of Jesus being king, he creates

  468. a contrast and a comparison. And it's

  469. the first contrast and comparison that

  470. the author of Hebrews does in this book.

  471. He does it throughout the book. In this

  472. chapter, what he does is he compares

  473. Jesus to angels.

  474. Verses 5-14. There's this contrast of

  475. Jesus with angels.

  476. And it's not that the author of Hebrews

  477. is saying that angels are bad. That's

  478. not what he's saying. In fact, they're

  479. glorious servants.

  480. But they're servants.

  481. They're servants.

  482. They aren't the son.

  483. The sun is superior to them.

  484. You see, angels stand.

  485. Jesus sits.

  486. Angels serve.

  487. Jesus reigns.

  488. Angels surround the throne.

  489. Jesus occupies the throne.

  490. Jesus is superior

  491. and he reigns as king.

  492. So what? Why does this matter?

  493. Why does this matter to us?

  494. Author Vivas is writing people going

  495. through some very difficult times.

  496. Why does this matter? If you're going

  497. through a difficult time, why does this

  498. matter?

  499. Well, the first thing we need to

  500. understand of why it matters is this.

  501. We live in the last days.

  502. Hold up. It says so here, but in these

  503. last days, he has spoken to us by his

  504. son. So, we're going to talk through

  505. this for a little bit, but I want to

  506. correct a little bit of our

  507. understanding of what those words mean.

  508. When I say we live in the last days, I'm

  509. not talking about some sort of countdown

  510. clock

  511. that is counting down to zero.

  512. We often approach the words last days in

  513. regards to that and think of it as some

  514. sort of countdown clock and we're kind

  515. of trying to figure out the timing of

  516. that countdown clock.

  517. What we need to understand is this. When

  518. we talk about the last days, it refers

  519. to the final stage of God's redemptive

  520. plan.

  521. We are in the time of God's final stage

  522. of his redemptive plan. He had been

  523. promising as we learned in the story and

  524. he had been speaking throughout the Old

  525. Testament and then he finally speaks and

  526. reveals himself through his son. And

  527. what we need to understand is there is

  528. no greater revealing of himself coming.

  529. He has revealed himself to the through

  530. his son and there is no greater

  531. revealing of himself coming.

  532. And so the question is not whether God

  533. will speak again

  534. but whether we're listening to how he's

  535. already spoken and how he's revealed

  536. himself in his son Jesus. Are we

  537. listening?

  538. Are we listening?

  539. The second reason that this matters is

  540. this.

  541. Going backwards makes no sense.

  542. Going backwards makes no sense. What did

  543. we talk about before? We talked about

  544. how these people who were the Hebrews

  545. was written to, they trying to follow

  546. Jesus. They're they're walking and

  547. they're trying to follow, but their

  548. thing is hard. So they're they're

  549. feeling this drift and and they're

  550. feeling this drift to just be pulled

  551. back to these other things. And the

  552. temptation is this drift to go over here

  553. and and they're being pulled in these

  554. directions.

  555. And what the author of Hebrews is saying

  556. is that Jesus is better than prophets.

  557. He's better than angels. He's better

  558. than priests. He's better than

  559. sacrifices.

  560. He's better than any of the substitutes

  561. that they could be coming up with.

  562. And the reality is is that at times in

  563. our lives, we're trying to follow Jesus

  564. and we're walking towards that and

  565. things get difficult and things become

  566. just hard and we feel that drift and we

  567. feel that temptation and that pull to be

  568. drifted back drift back to what we once

  569. knew. Maybe it's more comfortable there.

  570. Maybe it's a little easier there. Maybe

  571. things might be a little better. And

  572. what the author of Hebrews is saying is

  573. no, Jesus is better.

  574. Jesus is better.

  575. Returning to substitutes is not just

  576. foolish, it's tragic

  577. and dangerous and unnecessary.

  578. Hebrews exposes substitutes by showing

  579. us the surpassing worth of Christ.

  580. The surpassing worth of Christ.

  581. And that's huge.

  582. That's huge

  583. because what we need to understand is

  584. this. The third reason why this matters,

  585. the third reason why Hebrews matters is

  586. this. Clarity, not effort, is the

  587. antidote to drift. Clarity, not effort,

  588. is the antidote to drift.

  589. Here's what happens at times in my maybe

  590. not you, but at times in my life. So, if

  591. I'm trying to follow Jesus and I'm

  592. trying to walk this path of following

  593. Jesus, but things get difficult and I

  594. have this temptation to to just drift

  595. and I'm just kind of struggling a little

  596. bit and and and and moving back and

  597. forth, what ends up happening is that I

  598. try to be stronger and what I try to do

  599. is rely on my son. Okay, I'm not going

  600. to drift. I'm going to do things the

  601. right way and I'm going to and I'm going

  602. to try to work harder at fall. My

  603. efforts are futile and it's the wrong

  604. answer.

  605. Clarity, not effort, is the antidote to

  606. drift. Here's why. Drift rarely happens

  607. through open rebellion.

  608. It happens through distraction.

  609. It happens through blurred vision.

  610. Blurred vision that can come with

  611. weariness. You ever get tired and it's

  612. just hard to see? Like you just maybe

  613. you're driving at night and you're just

  614. tired. It's just hard to see. Your

  615. vision's kind of blurred.

  616. The answer is for not for me to try

  617. harder. The answer is for me to see

  618. clearer.

  619. The answer is for me to see with

  620. clarity,

  621. to fix my eyes on Jesus,

  622. to see Jesus for who he is. To fix

  623. my eyes on him.

  624. What Hebrews is saying to the people and

  625. what we need to hear is fix your eyes on

  626. Jesus. Here's

  627. the thing that we need to understand

  628. when it comes to that.

  629. This is a very it's a nuance twist, but

  630. we need to understand this. Hebrews does

  631. not say

  632. life is hard, so look at Jesus.

  633. Here's the problem with that statement.

  634. When I say my life is hard, so I need to

  635. look at Jesus. Who am I beginning that

  636. statement with? Myself.

  637. And the anchor is myself. My life isn't

  638. going the way I wanted. My dreams aren't

  639. going the way I wanted. My expectations

  640. aren't going the way I wanted. So to get

  641. all of that in line, let me fix my eyes

  642. on Jesus and then my life, my dreams, my

  643. expectations will fall in place.

  644. That's not what Hebrews is saying.

  645. Hebrews is saying this. Jesus is

  646. supreme.

  647. Therefore, endure.

  648. When I fix my eyes on Jesus and I get

  649. clarity about who he is and clarity of

  650. the wonder of who he is and the beauty

  651. of who he is and the power of who he is,

  652. when I see Jesus for who he is and I see

  653. what he's done, my life will explode in

  654. worship of him and I follow him because

  655. my eyes are fixed on him. And whatever

  656. else happens, whatever else is going on,

  657. whatever temptations happen, they don't

  658. matter

  659. because my eyes are fixed on the one who

  660. is better on the superior Jesus.

  661. So fix your eyes

  662. on him. Fix your eyes on Jesus. Hebrews

  663. begins and ends with the same call. Fix

  664. your eyes on Jesus. And what we need to

  665. understand is that this series is not

  666. primarily about mastering a difficult

  667. book.

  668. It's about recovering a clear,

  669. compelling vision of Jesus and growing

  670. in our love and appreciation of Jesus.

  671. The whole point of this series

  672. is so that we begin once again to see

  673. Jesus clearly

  674. and respond with hearts of appreciation

  675. and love

  676. that our appreciation and love of Jesus

  677. grows.

  678. Jesus is God's final word. He is the

  679. very radiance of God. Through him all

  680. was created and all creation is

  681. sustained through him. He has offered us

  682. the purification of our sins and

  683. victoriously sits on his throne,

  684. reigning as the perfect savior and the

  685. perfect king. And there is no one and

  686. nothing that we could ever turn to that

  687. is better than him. There is no one and

  688. nothing that we could turn to that is

  689. better than him.

  690. So, as we look at the book of Hebrews

  691. over the next several weeks, let's turn

  692. our eyes away from the cheap, fugile

  693. substitutes

  694. and let's focus on Jesus in all of his

  695. glory. Let's pray.

  696. Lord, we thank you

  697. for who you are and what you have done.

  698. We thank you for your goodness,

  699. for your holiness,

  700. for your strength and power.

  701. We thank you for your love.

  702. God, I ask you that you would allow us

  703. to see your son clearly

  704. in each day of our lives. And as we see

  705. him clearly, our hearts will explode

  706. with gratitude and appreciation and love

  707. and worship.

  708. We pray this in Jesus name. Amen.

  709. When you came in today, you should have

  710. received a communion cup.

  711. Uh if you didn't, you could raise your

  712. hand and we someone will bring it over

  713. to you.

  714. But we do communion as a church because

  715. we were commanded to by Jesus.

  716. And what did Jesus say was the purpose

  717. of doing communion? He said, "Do this in

  718. remembrance of me."

  719. This time of communion is a time to

  720. remember Jesus for who he is and what he

  721. has done.

  722. Jesus is far superior to everything. He

  723. is the supreme king.

  724. Through him all was made. The through

  725. the son all was made and all is

  726. sustained. There is nothing greater than

  727. him.

  728. And yet he chose

  729. to lay down his life for you

  730. and for me.

  731. Have you ever stopped to just think

  732. about that?

  733. How costly that act was?

  734. How powerful that love is?

  735. What we're going to do is I'm going to

  736. invite you to peel back the part of the

  737. cup with the bread

  738. and don't eat it yet, but just hold it

  739. and spend some time just praying,

  740. thinking about Jesus, who he is,

  741. and what he's done.

  742. Spending some time in appreciation and

  743. love with him.

  744. And then in a moment as you do that,

  745. after you do that, I'm going to open up

  746. the Bible. We're going to read from the

  747. Bible and then we'll eat the bread

  748. together. Spend some time in prayer.

  749. In the book of Hebrews

  750. chapter nine, it says this.

  751. But when Christ came as high priest

  752. of the good things that now already that

  753. are now already here,

  754. he went through the greater and more

  755. perfect tabernacle that is not made with

  756. human hands. That is to say is not a

  757. part of this creation.

  758. He did not enter by means of the blood

  759. of goats and calves, but he entered the

  760. most holy place once for all by his own

  761. blood.

  762. thus obtaining eternal redemption.

  763. The blood of goats and bulls and the

  764. ashes of a heer sprinkled on those who

  765. are ceremonially unclean sanctify them

  766. so that they are outwardly clean.

  767. How much more

  768. then will the blood of Christ who

  769. through the eternal spirit offered

  770. himself unbllemished to God cleanse our

  771. consciousness from acts that lead to

  772. death

  773. so that we may serve the living God.

  774. For this reason, Christ is the mediator

  775. of a new covenant that those who are

  776. called may receive the promised eternal

  777. inheritance.

  778. Now that he has died as a ransom to set

  779. them free from the sins committed under

  780. the first covenant.

  781. With grateful hearts, let's eat the

  782. bread together.

  783. If you can peel back the part of the

  784. other side. We're going to drink the cup

  785. in a moment together.

  786. If we were to continue on in that

  787. chapter,

  788. we would read this. For Christ

  789. did not enter a sanctuary made with

  790. human hands that was only a copy of the

  791. true one. He entered heaven itself now

  792. to appear for us in God's presence.

  793. Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself

  794. again and again the way the high priest

  795. enters the most holy place every year

  796. with blood that is not his own.

  797. Otherwise, Christ would have had to

  798. suffer many times since the creation of

  799. the world. But he has appeared once for

  800. all at the culmination of the ages to do

  801. away with sin by the sacrifice of

  802. himself.

  803. Just as people are destined to die once

  804. and after that to face judgment, so

  805. Christ was sacrificed once to take away

  806. the sins of many. And he will appear a

  807. second time, not to bear sin, but to

  808. bring salvation to those who are waiting

  809. for him.

  810. In gratitude of the full and complete

  811. work of Jesus, let us drink together.

  812. Lord, we thank you.

  813. We thank you

  814. for the work that is finished

  815. for your redemptive work, for your

  816. saving grace.

  817. We thank you,

  818. God. God, I ask you that you would allow

  819. our hearts to respond every single day

  820. with gratitude for that redemptive work.

  821. That you would stir in us an awareness

  822. of the gospel, an awareness of your

  823. presence, an awareness of the access we

  824. have to you because of Jesus.

  825. and that you would cause us to just be

  826. overwhelmed

  827. with that truth

  828. in a way that goes and spills out to

  829. everyone we come in contact with and you

  830. would change lives because of the

  831. gospel.

  832. We love you and we thank you in Jesus

  833. name. Amen.
