  1. Well, good morning and welcome to week

  2. two of Hebrews.

  3. Now, if you've tried to read Hebrews

  4. either in the past or this week, my

  5. guess is you've discovered it's not too

  6. easy. It's kind of like a puzzle, right?

  7. There are strange images, unfamiliar

  8. people, obscure references.

  9. Not just that, complicated arguments.

  10. And you may be asking yourself, who

  11. decided on this series and why? Well,

  12. let me tell you why. It's in the

  13. subtitle. What is Hebrews main message?

  14. Jesus is better. In fact, we can take

  15. the tagline uh the sub the subtitle of

  16. the series. And that can be the outline

  17. of the book. So, we have a slide up here

  18. if you want to kind of outline how the

  19. book works. It would go like this. In

  20. chapters 1 and two, we read that Jesus

  21. is better than the prophets, better than

  22. the priests, better than the kings, even

  23. better than angels. In chapter three,

  24. Jesus is better than Moses and the law

  25. that Moses gives. Chapter four, Jesus is

  26. better than the promised land and the

  27. rest that came from the promised land.

  28. Jesus is better than the priest. Jesus

  29. is better than the old covenant. And in

  30. chapters 9-10,

  31. Jesus is better than the tabernacle and

  32. better than all the thousands of

  33. sacrifices that have happened through

  34. the years. That's why we're looking at

  35. Hebrews. Now, you may be sitting there

  36. saying, "Yeah, but wait a minute. I'm

  37. not tempted to trust or to lean on or

  38. build my life on the priest, the

  39. tabernacle, thousands of sacrifices, the

  40. promised land.

  41. But you are tempted to lean on and trust

  42. something, aren't you? In the uh uh

  43. bumper that played before I came up

  44. here, are you tempted to lean on and

  45. trust your wealth, 401k, reputation,

  46. family, grades? Are you tempted to lean

  47. on and trust something? What's the

  48. message of Hebrews? Jesus is better.

  49. better than anything else we can lean

  50. on, better than any foundation we can

  51. build our lives on, better than anything

  52. else we can trust. And so what that's

  53. why we're studying Hebrews. And this

  54. morning, we're going to look at Jesus,

  55. our captain and our king. Now, to get

  56. started, I we're going to look at

  57. chapter 2. But in order to get started,

  58. I want to show you how chapter 1 relates

  59. to chapter 2. What's chapter 1 about?

  60. Well, last week, Carlos talked about

  61. chapter 1. And what was that all about?

  62. Jesus is superior. So here here are a

  63. few things you read in chapter one.

  64. Jesus is the heir of all things. All

  65. things. He's the heir. That means he one

  66. day will have it all. And even today he

  67. has it all. Jesus is the creator of the

  68. universe.

  69. Jesus is above the angels.

  70. And Jesus is worthy of worship. So what

  71. could we write over Hebrews chapter 1?

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  72. Jesus is superior, right? Jesus is the

  73. king who's superior. But this king

  74. doesn't sit up there looking down on us

  75. and seeing our little plight and doesn't

  76. pay any attention. What does the king

  77. do? He comes to lead us. And that's

  78. where chapter 2 fits in. So if chapter 1

  79. is all about the king and his

  80. superiority, he's the heir. He's the

  81. creator. He's worthy worthy of worship.

  82. He's above angels, infinitely above

  83. angels. What's chapter 2 about? Jesus

  84. comes down not just to see us, but to be

  85. with us and become one of us. Now, we're

  86. going to read a few verses from Hebrews

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  87. chapter 2. But before I read 5-18, I

  88. want to read two verses that kind of

  89. summarize the fact that Jesus is

  90. superior, but he's approachable. That's

  91. our king who leads us. He's superior

  92. chapter one. He's approachable chapter

  93. two. So look at verse nine.

  94. In putting everything under him, God

  95. left nothing that is not subject to him.

  96. Yet at present we see everything subject

  97. to them. But we see Jesus who was made

  98. lower than the angels for a little

  99. while. There it is. Chapter one,

  100. superior. Chapter two, he was made a

  101. little lower than the angels. Look at

  102. verse 14. Jesus shared in their humanity

  103. so that by his death he might break the

  104. power of him who holds uh all things.

  105. Okay. So Jesus is superior. Chapter one.

  106. Jesus is approachable. He doesn't just

  107. notice and see us. He becomes one of us

  108. so that we can then spend eternity with

  109. him. That's chapter one. All right. So,

  110. let me read verses 5-18 of chapter 2.

  111. And let's see what this journey of Jesus

  112. is like when he comes to be one of us in

  113. order to take us forever with him. Verse

  114. 5, it is not to angels that he was that

  115. he subjected the world to come about

  116. which we are speaking. But there is a

  117. place where someone has testified, "What

  118. is mankind that you were mindful of

  119. them? A son of man that you care for

  120. him? You made them a little lower than

  121. the angels. You crowned them with glory

  122. and honor and put everything under their

  123. feet. In putting everything under them,

  124. God left nothing that is not subject to

  125. them. Yet at present time, we do not see

  126. everything subject to them. But we do

  127. see Jesus who was made a little lower

  128. than the angels for a little while now

  129. crowned with glory and honor because he

  130. suffered death so that by the grace of

  131. God he might taste death for everyone.

  132. and bringing many sons and daughters to

  133. glory. It was fitting that God for whom

  134. and through whom everything exists

  135. should should make the pioneer of their

  136. salvation perfect through what he

  137. suffered. Both the one who makes people

  138. holy and those who are made holy are of

  139. the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed

  140. to call them brothers and sisters. He

  141. says, "I will declare your name to my

  142. brothers and sisters. in the assembly I

  143. will sing your praises and again I put I

  144. will put my trust in him and again he

  145. says here am I and the children God has

  146. given me since the children have flesh

  147. and blood he too shared in their

  148. humanity so that by his death he might

  149. break the power of him who holds the

  150. powers of death that is the devil and

  151. free those who all their lives were held

  152. in slavery by their fear of death for

  153. surely it is not angels he helped but

  154. Abraham 's descendants. For this reason,

  155. he had to be made like them, fully human

  156. in every way, in order that he might

  157. become a merciful and faithful high

  158. priest in service to God. And that he

  159. might make atonement for the sins of the

  160. people because he himself suffered when

  161. he was tempted. He is able to help those

  162. who are being tempted. Chapter one,

  163. superior. Chapter two, approachable. And

  164. all that complicated reference and all

  165. those images point to the overarching

  166. theme. Jesus is better not just because

  167. of his superiority but because of his

  168. approachability. All right? So Jesus is

  169. the king who leads us but he's also

  170. the brother who accepts us. The brother

  171. who accepts us. And so in verse 11 we

  172. read this. But the one who makes people

  173. holy and those who are made holy are of

  174. the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed

  175. to call them brothers and sisters. All

  176. right. Now in culture, any culture,

  177. acceptance, right? He's the brother who

  178. accepts. Acceptance always comes with

  179. conditions and qualifications. Isn't

  180. that right? You don't just accept

  181. somebody for no reason. There is a

  182. condition to the acceptance. There's a

  183. qualification for the acceptance. Now

  184. our world is different than the ancient

  185. world and different than some cultures

  186. in the world. So for example in the

  187. ancient world acceptance the condition

  188. of acceptance and the qualification was

  189. your family right your genealogy who you

  190. who's your daddy who's your granddaddy

  191. and that's what mattered most and so

  192. every year I read a couple times through

  193. the gospels and every time as I'm

  194. reading through the gospels you start in

  195. Matthew chapter 1 and Matthew 1 if you

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  196. haven't read it you should read it you

  197. should check it out a long genealogy to

  198. start his gospel right I mean I'm

  199. talking long right And uh it's kind of

  200. interesting as you look through the

  201. genealogy. If you know anything about

  202. the characters that are mentioned, uh

  203. let me tell you about it. There are

  204. cheaters in that genealogy. There are

  205. sinners in that genealogy. There are

  206. liars in that genealogy.

  207. There is a victim of incest in the

  208. genealogy. And there's the perpetrator

  209. of incest in the genealogy. There are

  210. idolattors in the genealogy. They're

  211. adulterers in the genealogy. I mean, I

  212. don't know about you, I'd be ashamed to

  213. list those kind of people. Maybe I have

  214. them in my genealogy, but Jesus says,

  215. "I'm proud to call these people my

  216. brothers and sisters." What What are the

  217. terms and conditions? What What are the

  218. qualifications if people like that get

  219. listed in gene in Jesus genealogy? And

  220. remember, in that culture, genealogy was

  221. much more important than your resume.

  222. And so culture, there's always

  223. conditions and qualifications. In the

  224. ancient world, the qualifications and

  225. conditions were all about your family

  226. line. Now, we still have some of that.

  227. So, regardless of where you've been and

  228. what you've done and who your best

  229. friends are and who your boss was and

  230. how big your resume is, when it comes

  231. time to checking out, you leave your

  232. estate to your kids.

  233. That's kind of a genealogy, right?

  234. Genealogy kind of trumps your

  235. accomplishments.

  236. But that's not how our world works. Our

  237. world, the conditions and qualifications

  238. in our culture aren't really

  239. genealogical.

  240. They're accomplishments and

  241. achievements, right? And so what do we

  242. do in our it's is it's here's a picture.

  243. It's as if when you're a little kid,

  244. you're we do this to our kids. We walk

  245. up to them and we put a little ladder in

  246. front of them, right? And we say, "Now,

  247. your job in life is to climb that

  248. ladder. That's what you need to do. And

  249. so you need to be potty trained by this

  250. time. And you need to listen to what I

  251. say. You need to be safe. So And you

  252. need to get into a good school. Darn it.

  253. And you need to get good grades in

  254. elementary school so you can get into

  255. the advanced class in high school. And

  256. you need good grades in high school so

  257. you can get into a good college. And you

  258. need to get into a good college so you

  259. get a good job. And you need a good job

  260. so you make a lot of money. And you need

  261. to make a lot of money so you go buy a

  262. house and a vacation house. And then you

  263. need to make money so you can fill the

  264. house with stuff. so much stuff that

  265. eventually you have to rent some storage

  266. units to put stuff in so that when

  267. you're die your kids have to clean all

  268. that mess out.

  269. Funny how that ladder climbing works,

  270. isn't it? Um, but isn't that how life

  271. works? Life's all about climbing the

  272. ladder. Whether it's in athletics, you

  273. got to be good enough and accomplished

  274. enough and have enough enough

  275. accomplishments to make the team to be a

  276. star on the team. How about when it

  277. comes to intelligence and academics,

  278. you've got to perform well. You got to

  279. climb the ladder. Everything in our

  280. life's about qualifications, conditions.

  281. In the ancient world, it may have been

  282. genealogy. Jesus breaks that terms or

  283. those terms and conditions. In our

  284. world, it's about achievements and

  285. accomplishments.

  286. What does the gospel say?

  287. Here's what the gospel says.

  288. Whether it's genealogy or

  289. accomplishments,

  290. it doesn't matter what family you're in.

  291. It doesn't matter what you've done.

  292. It doesn't matter what you're guilty of.

  293. It doesn't matter what you've trusted

  294. in.

  295. It doesn't matter when it comes to your

  296. pedigree. And it doesn't matter when it

  297. comes to your resume.

  298. What matters

  299. is are you connected to Jesus Christ?

  300. His life, death, and resurrection

  301. can be given to you without condition

  302. and without qualification.

  303. Boy, the gospel radically opposes and

  304. comes up and smashes against whatever

  305. culture um there is because every

  306. culture has conditions and

  307. qualifications in order to be accepted.

  308. But our brother Jesus

  309. becomes a human being and and through

  310. the incarnation through his crucifixion

  311. through his resurrection he says you

  312. cannot only be accepted you can be taken

  313. into my family

  314. and remember what I said in chapter one

  315. um Jesus was heir of all things

  316. when you get adopted into his family

  317. you become an heir with Jesus

  318. of all things. That's amazing, isn't it?

  319. The king who leads us, superior and

  320. approachable, the brother who accepts

  321. us, the only term and condition is, are

  322. you connected to him by grace through

  323. faith? The brother who leads us. Well,

  324. that's not all that's there.

  325. You also have the rescuer

  326. who frees us. He's the rescuer who frees

  327. us. Now, this is a long passage here,

  328. but let me just read a couple verses to

  329. kind of show you what I'm talking about.

  330. You need to check this out later today.

  331. Eagles are done. You can check it out

  332. later. And here's what the author of

  333. Hebrews says. Since the children have

  334. flesh and blood,

  335. he too shared in their humanity. That's

  336. incarnation. He shared, that's

  337. Christmas. He shared in their humanity,

  338. so that by his death, Good Friday, he

  339. might break the power of him who holds

  340. the power of death, that is the devil,

  341. and free those who all their lives were

  342. held in slavery by their fear of death.

  343. Now, what did Jesus come and rescue us

  344. from? Uh, let me ask you another

  345. question first. Who's the greatest

  346. rescuer, the greatest deliverer from the

  347. Old Testament? Somebody yell, "Who's the

  348. greatest rescuer?" Yell it out. Moses.

  349. Moses. Right. Moses kind of ran away

  350. from Egypt. He's in the desert tending

  351. his grand sending his father-in-law's

  352. sheep. All of a sudden, God said, "Go

  353. back and deliver my people. Go back and

  354. rescue them from slavery in Egypt." So,

  355. he goes back through the desert and he

  356. del he delivers the Israelites from

  357. slavery in Egypt. goes through the

  358. promised land or through the desert to

  359. the threshold of the promised land. We

  360. won't he can't get in, but he makes it

  361. all. He's a deliverer, right? Well, if

  362. Moses delivered the Israelites from

  363. slavery, from bondage, from captivity in

  364. Egypt, well, in those verses, what did

  365. Jesus deliver us from? Well, the evil

  366. triad. You notice how to write our

  367. Hebrews. Here's the evil triad. What did

  368. Jesus deliver us from?

  369. Death, sin, and the devil.

  370. Now,

  371. where do you think the writer of Hebrews

  372. got that from? You can't read Hebrews

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  373. chapter 2. Well, maybe you can, but if

  374. you know the Bible, you can't read

  375. Hebrews 2 without thinking about Genesis

  376. 3.

  377. The writer of Hebrews clearly think

  378. about Genesis 3. What's the evil triad

  379. in Genesis 3?

  380. The serpent slithers up to Adam and Eve

  381. in the garden and seeks to deceive them.

  382. And what's the deception? Here's the

  383. deception.

  384. You know, if you trust God, he's going

  385. to keep you down. He doesn't have your

  386. best interest in mind. You need to not

  387. trust God. You need to trust yourself

  388. and your own instinct. You know, look

  389. inside. Follow your heart. Don't follow

  390. God. You need to be the decider rather

  391. than let God be the decider. and they

  392. they agreed they became the decider.

  393. That's called sin. That's called

  394. treason.

  395. And once they commit sin, what's the

  396. natural consequence of sin? Death.

  397. The devil deceives

  398. by causing Adam and Eve to doubt God's

  399. goodness. They doubt God's goodness,

  400. trust themselves, commit sin, and as a

  401. result of sin, they now will experience

  402. death. There's the triad. Death, sin,

  403. and the devil. They go together.

  404. Why does Jesus go on this mission, this

  405. rescue mission to rescue us from sin,

  406. death, and the devil? And it doesn't

  407. matter what order the order of Genesis 3

  408. is. The devil came to deceive, right?

  409. The serpent comes, they commit sin, and

  410. then they die. How does he, the writer

  411. of Hebrews says, "Yeah, we experience

  412. death." That's what we look at. But

  413. underneath death, the cause of death is

  414. sin. And what's underneath that? There's

  415. an evil force in the world. There's an

  416. evil person who's trying to get us to

  417. follow him and our own instincts rather

  418. than follow God. The Why did Jesus come?

  419. Not to deliver us from slavery in Egypt.

  420. He came to deliver us from the ultimate

  421. enemies that will separate us forever.

  422. Sin, death, and the devil. That's what

  423. he came to do.

  424. Uh but there's one more thing.

  425. Jesus is also our champion

  426. who dies for us. My uh favorite verse in

  427. Hebrews 2 is verse 10. Here's how verse

  428. 10 reads.

  429. In bringing many sons and daughters to

  430. glory,

  431. it was fitting that God for uh for whom

  432. and through whom everything exists

  433. should make the pioneer of their

  434. salvation

  435. perfect through what he suffered. Now,

  436. depending on the version of the Bible

  437. you use, that word pioneer is going to

  438. be translated differently. Maybe it's

  439. going to be translated captain. Maybe

  440. it's going to be um author. Maybe it's

  441. going to be leader. All those things are

  442. Here's the idea. Here's the idea. A

  443. pioneer

  444. cuts the way through the forest. The

  445. pioneer is the one who climbs the face

  446. of the mountain first. The pioneer leads

  447. the way. And without the pioneer leading

  448. the way, those that follow are going to

  449. be lost and never make it. So Jesus is

  450. not only the king who leads us, he's the

  451. brother who accepts us. He's the rescuer

  452. who frees us. And he's the champion, the

  453. pioneer

  454. who dies for us. That's what he does.

  455. Jesus comes not just to become a human

  456. being so we can understand what he's

  457. saying. He becomes a human being so he

  458. can die. He leads the way. How do we say

  459. it?

  460. Jesus died to death. We deserve to die

  461. to pay for our sin. And since he has

  462. paid for our sin, we now do not have to

  463. experience the eternal consequence of

  464. death because the pioneer has led the

  465. way through the forest. The pioneer has

  466. ascended the mountain. And if you're

  467. tethered to him, you will make it to the

  468. top, too. If you're tether, if you're

  469. not tethered to him, you got no shot of

  470. making it.

  471. So the real question is is uh is Jesus

  472. your pioneer? Are you tethered to him?

  473. That's the question. Now at the

  474. beginning uh of the section I read I I I

  475. like how the uh how the writer of

  476. Hebrews says it. Look at verse six.

  477. There's a place where someone has

  478. testified.

  479. Yeah, that someone actually comes from

  480. Psalm 8. So if you look at all those

  481. indented verses there, that comes from

  482. Psalm 8. Now, I'm going to read uh those

  483. verses from Psalm 8. And when I read

  484. them, you're going to hear echoes of

  485. what we talked about Jesus

  486. rescuing us. And you're going to hear

  487. echoes of Genesis 3. So, here's Psalm 8.

  488. What is mankind that you are mindful of

  489. him? The son of man that you care for

  490. him. You made him a little lower than

  491. the angels, crowned them with glory and

  492. honor, and put everything under their

  493. feet. You know what that says? That says

  494. we were created to have everything under

  495. our feet. We were created in God's image

  496. to lead as his co-regent. That that's

  497. the original intention. That's what God

  498. wants. That's Genesis 1 and two. Um but

  499. then the writer of Hebrews uh says this,

  500. maybe the understatement of of of all

  501. understatements. Look, look, look at the

  502. end of verse eight. Yet at the present,

  503. we don't see everything subject to them.

  504. Yeah, you got that right. In fact,

  505. rather than being over things, it seems

  506. like we're under everything. So, the

  507. original intention is that we would

  508. reign and be reproducers of God's image

  509. to fill the earth. That's Psalm 8.

  510. That's Genesis 1 and2. That's what the

  511. writer of Hebrews says. That's the

  512. original. Well, what happened? Well,

  513. deception, rebellion, death. That's what

  514. happened. So,

  515. the original intention is swallowed up

  516. in the rebellious

  517. consequence

  518. which is then swallowed up by the

  519. gracious initiative of the gospel.

  520. That in a nutshell, Hebrews chapter 2 is

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  521. in miniature the story of the whole

  522. Bible. God's original intention, Genesis

  523. 1 and2 is that we would have all things

  524. under our feet. Only God above us,

  525. everything under us. That's the

  526. original. But that's not how we see

  527. things today. Yeah, you got that right.

  528. Everything seems over us. Yeah, that's a

  529. consequence of sin. That's like Genesis

  530. 3 all the way till we get to Jesus.

  531. But the gospel, the gracious

  532. strategy, the gracious intention is that

  533. Jesus comes to change that

  534. in bringing all things, all sons and

  535. daughters, the pioneer of our salvation

  536. ascends the mountain. And if you're

  537. tethered to him, you're guaranteed to

  538. ascend it as well. Now, I want to end

  539. by looking at verse one of chapter 2.

  540. You say, Charles, we read the end, the

  541. beginning. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. We read in

  542. the beginning. Here's what verse one

  543. says.

  544. We must pay careful and most careful

  545. attention

  546. to what we've heard

  547. so that we do not

  548. drift away. Drift away.

  549. Pay careful attention

  550. to what you've heard.

  551. So, do you do not drift away?

  552. Notice the author doesn't say, "Pay

  553. careful attention. Jump through all the

  554. hoops. You got to obey all the rules so

  555. you don't drift." No, no, no. Pay

  556. careful attention. You got to memorize

  557. all this Bible stuff. You got to And you

  558. No, it doesn't say all that. Pay careful

  559. attention to what you've heard.

  560. What have you heard?

  561. The king of the universe, heir of all

  562. things, the creator of the universe, who

  563. is the only one worthy of worship. God

  564. himself went on this mission and became

  565. a human being.

  566. He wants to adopt us into the family.

  567. Our brother accepts us not on the basis

  568. of accomplishment or genealogy, on the

  569. basis of his mission.

  570. Our champion

  571. dies for us.

  572. He defeated our enemies for us. He cut

  573. through the forest and ascended the

  574. mountain. And if you're tethered to him,

  575. you're guaranteed to make it too. How do

  576. we not drift away?

  577. Remember, don't forget, don't forget who

  578. Jesus is and what he came to do. Chapter

  579. one tells speaks of his superiority.

  580. Chapter two speaks of his

  581. approachability. You need both of those

  582. things. You his divinity, his humanity,

  583. and his mission for us. I was reminded

  584. of drifting away.

  585. I went jet skiing with my grandsons not

  586. too long ago. And so we're kind of jet

  587. skiing around and they want to go as

  588. fast as we can. And the little one says,

  589. "Pop, this jet ski only goes 50. How

  590. come it can't go faster?" So I'm scared

  591. going my 50. Well, we there's somebody

  592. leading us and eventually we stop. It's

  593. pretty shallow. And the person leading

  594. the jet ski tour, he jumps off his jet

  595. ski. It's kind of shallow here. Jumps

  596. off and he says, "Here, let me grab all

  597. your jet skis." So, he's these little

  598. little ropes and he gathers them all and

  599. he holds them, right? All three of our

  600. jet skis. He holds it and he says,

  601. "Okay, jump off, swim around, have a

  602. good time."

  603. Huh?

  604. Why did he have to jump in and hold the

  605. jet skis? Because if you didn't, those

  606. suckers would have floated away and I

  607. couldn't swim fast enough to get mine

  608. back.

  609. Yeah. Kind of funny, isn't it?

  610. If you do nothing,

  611. the current of culture

  612. and a desire of your own heart

  613. will cause you to drift away.

  614. So what do we have to do? You need an

  615. anchor. You need to hold on. And how do

  616. you hold on? You remember these things.

  617. Be very careful. It's most important.

  618. Remember,

  619. the king

  620. came to lead us.

  621. God's only natural son,

  622. went on a mission to accept us as

  623. brothers and sisters into his family.

  624. The ultimate rescuer, infinitely better

  625. than the rescue Moses brought. The

  626. ultimate rescuer

  627. delivers us from death, sin, and the

  628. deception of the devil.

  629. How did he do that? The champion

  630. paid the price we owed. He came to die

  631. for us.

  632. If you want to stay secure and not

  633. drift,

  634. pay careful attention.

  635. Remember these things. Who Jesus is,

  636. what he came to do. That's the anchor we

  637. need. Let's pray.

  638. Father, we give you thanks for this um

  639. for this book with the strange images

  640. and the complicated arguments and some

  641. of the unfamiliar people and the obscure

  642. references,

  643. but thanks for the big picture. It's

  644. easy to see Jesus is better. So Lord,

  645. when we're tempted to lean on, trust in,

  646. build our lives on something other than

  647. the gospel, help us to remember. To

  648. remember so we don't drift away. We pray

  649. in Christ's name. Amen.
