  1. Well, hey everyone. I hope you're having

  2. a good day. Uh, now here's the deal.

  3. Some of you may be thinking over there

  4. that it's a snow day, so I can kind of

  5. relax. I don't have to keep going in

  6. Hebrews. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.

  7. We're going to continue on in Hebrews.

  8. In fact, uh, we're going to go to the

  9. next chapter. And what we've said is

  10. that in this book, the author is writing

  11. to a group of people that are going

  12. through some difficulties that they're

  13. going through some hard times. And in

  14. the midst of those difficulties,

  15. they start to tend to drift a little

  16. bit. They're not rejecting Jesus, but

  17. they're questioning if Jesus is actually

  18. worth it. and and then they start to

  19. drift towards things that were familiar

  20. before, things that were more

  21. comfortable, things that they knew.

  22. And what the author of Hebrews is saying

  23. is, "Hey, hey, hey,

  24. whatever it is that you're tending to

  25. drift towards, here's what you need to

  26. understand. Jesus is better. Jesus is

  27. better than any substitutes that you

  28. might have."

  29. And so he begins to make all these

  30. different comparisons in the book of how

  31. Jesus is better than this person or that

  32. person or this thing in the Old

  33. Testament. Jesus is better.

  34. Now before we go into today and talk

  35. about what we're going to learn from

  36. Hebrews chapter 3 today, before we do

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

  37. that, I'm going to take you behind the

  38. scenes a little bit.

  39. I'm going to take you behind the scenes

  40. into how we prepped for today's message.

  41. You see, we meet every Tuesday as a

  42. preaching team. There's Charles, myself,

  43. Brad, and Steve.

  44. And this week, what we had planned on

  45. was that I would preach in Solderton,

  46. and Steve would preach live in Quaker

  47. Town, and we would both cover the same

  48. chapter. And so what we did was we

  49. prepared and we studied and and we began

  50. to email our outlines to each other,

  51. Steve and myself, and we began to email

  52. our manuscripts to each other. And what

  53. was fascinating and and a lot of fun was

  54. the fact that we were very similar and

  55. we were lined up in a lot of ways in our

  56. sermons even before we started talking

  57. about it with each other. And that was a

  58. lot of fun. But what was also fun was

  59. that we were also different. We were

  60. presenting it in different ways.

  61. Why am I telling you this?

  62. Because I really liked Steve's

  63. introduction. I really like the way that

  64. he started his sermon so much that I'm

  65. going to steal it. Don't worry, he's

  66. probably shoveling the snow. He has no

  67. clue. It's fine. He'll be fine. But if

  68. you like the next two to three minutes

  69. of the sermon, you just need to

  70. understand that you're like Steve's

  71. preaching right now, not mine. So here's

  72. what Steve observed.

  73. Steve observed that in our culture, in

  74. our world, in our in our life around us,

  75. if you look closely, what you'll see is

  76. that the world has a formula for

  77. everything.

  78. And here's what he meant. Take a look at

  79. this. Here's one of the formulas. Money

  80. plus security

  81. equals peace. Right? That that's a

  82. formula that many of us and many of

  83. people we know may live by. How about

  84. this?

  85. Comfort

  86. plus convenience

  87. equals contentment.

  88. You ever you ever live by that formula?

  89. Here's another one. Image

  90. plus approval

  91. equals worth.

  92. Now, this one stung a little bit because

  93. this one actually resonated a little bit

  94. with me and I was like, "Oo, Steve, how

  95. about this? Control

  96. plus certainty equals safety." Huh? You

  97. live by that formula? You live by any of

  98. those formulas? And and what Steve is

  99. saying is he's saying these formulas

  100. tend to be some of the things that we

  101. drift towards, some of the things that

  102. we try to live our lives according to.

  103. And nothing in those formulas are are

  104. necessarily bad. Money isn't bad. Um,

  105. comfort isn't bad. Uh, certainty isn't

  106. bad.

  107. They're all good. But here's the danger.

  108. The danger arrives when we begin to

  109. trust in these formulas instead of

  110. trusting in Jesus.

  111. But Steve didn't stop there. He said,

  112. "Let's take it up a notch." Because

  113. we're just talking about our cultural

  114. formulas. We're talking about the

  115. formulas of our world, but the reality

  116. is in the church, we as Christians

  117. sometimes have formulas. They might not

  118. be uh uh as in-your-face. It might be

  119. subtle, but they're just as formative.

  120. And here's what he was saying. Here's

  121. how the formulas usually start.

  122. If I pray enough, if I stay consistent,

  123. if I avoid certain sins, if I show up,

  124. if I serve, give and read my Bible, then

  125. God will be pleased with me. He will

  126. love me. He will bless me.

  127. You ever live according to any of those

  128. formulas?

  129. Again, there's not anything wrong

  130. necessarily with the elements of those

  131. formulas. Obviously, prayer, good,

  132. reading your Bible, good.

  133. But the problem is is when we begin to

  134. trust in those formulas that we design

  135. instead of the person whom the formula

  136. is pointing to

  137. instead of Jesus whom those formulas are

  138. pointing to.

  139. The author of Hebrews is writing to a

  140. group that tended to drift back to old

  141. formulas that they were trusting.

  142. Old formulas that they had put their

  143. trust in. And and here's what we need to

  144. understand about drift. Drift is often

  145. backwards.

  146. Drift is often backwards. Uh drift tends

  147. to return us to what once helped us.

  148. It brings us back to formulas that we

  149. thought were saved.

  150. And here's the thing about drift. Drift

  151. rarely tends to reject Jesus outright.

  152. What it does, what it does, drift tends

  153. to downgrade Jesus.

  154. It takes him from where he's supposed to

  155. be and downgrades him.

  156. And what the author of Hebrews is doing

  157. is reminding us over and over and over

  158. again that Jesus is better than anything

  159. we could drift to. He's better than

  160. anything we could drift to. So with that

  161. in mind, let's jump into Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

  162. 3.

  163. Hebrews chapter 3, starting at verse 1.

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

  164. Therefore, holy brothers and sisters who

  165. share in the heavenly calling, fix your

  166. thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge

  167. as our apostle and high priest.

  168. He was faithful to the one who appointed

  169. him, just as Moses was faithful in all

  170. God's house.

  171. Jesus had been found worthy of greater

  172. honor than Moses, just as the builder of

  173. a house has greater honor than the house

  174. itself.

  175. For every house is built by someone, but

  176. God is the builder of everything.

  177. Moses was faithful as a servant in all

  178. God's house, bearing witness to what

  179. would be spoken by God in the future.

  180. But Christ is faithful as the son over

  181. God's house. And we are his house if

  182. indeed we hold firmly to our confidence

  183. and the hope in which we glory.

  184. Okay,

  185. here's the big idea for today. Okay,

  186. here's the big idea. Because Jesus is

  187. the faithful son over God's house, we

  188. must fix our eyes on him and hold fast

  189. in persevering faith. Did you get that?

  190. The big idea is this. Because Jesus is

  191. the faithful son over God's house, we

  192. must fix our eyes on him and hold fast

  193. fast in persevering faith.

  194. Okay, so how do we do that?

  195. How do we live out this big idea? Well,

  196. the author of Hebrews tells us by giving

  197. us different reminders. And those

  198. reminders are are three things. He says,

  199. here's what he wants us to remember. He

  200. wants us to remember who we are. He

  201. wants to remember to consider who Jesus

  202. is. And he wants us to hold fast to

  203. Jesus. Okay, let's look at that first

  204. one. Remember who you are. Remember who

  205. you are.

  206. How does this chapter start? Let's go

  207. back to it. How does it start in verse

  208. one? Therefore, holy brothers and

  209. sisters who share in the heavenly

  210. calling, stop. Okay, we're going to stop

  211. right there.

  212. What we just read is huge.

  213. What we just read is huge and we need to

  214. not just kind of take it in real quick.

  215. We need to slowly slowly chew it apart

  216. bit by bit today. Okay, let's go through

  217. it slowly.

  218. Let's start. Therefore,

  219. holy. Stop.

  220. Therefore, holy,

  221. the adjective being used is holy.

  222. Now, if my wife uh is watching this

  223. right now, she's thinking to herself,

  224. "Yeah, you're not I mean, your socks

  225. have holes in them." That's about as

  226. holy as I think you are. Holy, let's

  227. remind ourselves what holy is.

  228. Holy is being set apart.

  229. A a holy is separate from the ordinary

  230. or the profane.

  231. He holy is is sacred. It has a with a

  232. divine purpose.

  233. This is the adjective that is being used

  234. at the beginning of Hebrews 3:1.

    Hebrews 3:1

  235. Holy. What does this mean? It is a

  236. reminder that we have a new identity in

  237. Christ.

  238. And that new identity includes this

  239. holiness.

  240. I it's not a holiness that means that we

  241. have some sort of moral perfection that

  242. we have manufactured. No, it's a

  243. holiness

  244. that is brought about by Jesus's

  245. sacrifice.

  246. Holiness is given to us. It's not

  247. achieved.

  248. And so that's the first thing that we

  249. are reminded of in this verse of

  250. remembering who we are. And then what

  251. does it say if it goes on? What does it

  252. say? Therefore, holy brothers and

  253. sisters.

  254. Brothers and sisters, this new identity

  255. comes with a new family.

  256. We are part of a new family that is

  257. formed by Jesus. last week. If you uh

  258. attended church, you would have heard

  259. Charles talk about Jesus, our big

  260. brother. And if you if you didn't hear

  261. the sermon, I invite you to go back and

  262. watch it on the Not now. Not now. No,

  263. wait until I'm done. Then go back and

  264. watch it on our website or on our app or

  265. on Facebook,

  266. but watch it and look at what Charles

  267. unpacked about Jesus, our big brother.

  268. Jesus forms this family that we get to

  269. be a part of. We are part of a new

  270. family as holy brothers and sisters. And

  271. as a result, what happens? As a result,

  272. we share in the heavenly calling. What

  273. does this mean? It means with our new

  274. identity comes a new purpose. And our

  275. lives are oriented upward and forward.

  276. They are oriented upward and forward.

  277. We belong to heaven even while living on

  278. earth.

  279. When we choose to accept Jesus as Lord

  280. and Savior, we are part of God's kingdom

  281. work, God's kingdom life now.

  282. Not simply when Jesus returns or after

  283. we die. We get to participate in his

  284. kingdom now. And we are part of his

  285. heavenly calling.

  286. And this is huge.

  287. this sentence and the reason we pause to

  288. just go bit by bit and looking at this

  289. beginning of chapter three is so

  290. important. Why?

  291. Because what the author of Hebrews is

  292. reminding us is this.

  293. Identity has to come before exhortation.

  294. Here's what he doesn't do. The author of

  295. Hebrews doesn't say, he doesn't begin

  296. with do more.

  297. Now that you are FOLLOWERS OF JESUS, DO

  298. MORE. DO MORE. Do more. Do more of this.

  299. Do more of that. No, he begins with

  300. remember who you are.

  301. Remember who you are. You see, identity

  302. fuels perseverance.

  303. Identity fuels perseverance.

  304. And what we need to understand when it

  305. comes to drift and identity is this.

  306. When we forget who we are, that's when

  307. danger happens. When we forget the

  308. identity we have in Christ, that's when

  309. danger happens. That's when drift

  310. happens. Forgetting for who we are, it

  311. pulls us back to old loyalties and old

  312. formulas.

  313. And so the author of Hebrews tells us,

  314. remember who you are. Remember who you

  315. are.

  316. Who you are in Christ.

  317. And once he makes that identity clear,

  318. then then at that point the command

  319. follows. The command follows.

  320. And the central command

  321. of Hebrews chapter 3 is this. Consider

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

  322. who Jesus is. Consider who Jesus is. The

  323. central command is consider Jesus.

  324. Consider Jesus.

  325. If we were to read this again

  326. and we would read it uh in a different

  327. version of the Bible, if we would read

  328. it in the English Standard Version,

  329. here's how it would read. It would say

  330. this.

  331. Therefore, holy brothers, you who share

  332. in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus

  333. the apostle and high priest of our

  334. confession.

  335. Jesus is not meant to be in our

  336. peripheral vision. He's meant to be

  337. central. He's meant to be central. And

  338. we are to fix our attention, our

  339. thoughts, and our trusts on him.

  340. Whether life is good, whether it's bad,

  341. in between,

  342. what ends up happening is we have a

  343. tendency to to shift our focus and and

  344. we begin to shift our focus

  345. horizontally,

  346. looking to our left or right and making

  347. comparisons to other people or looking

  348. at other settings. And what Hebrews is

  349. saying is stop looking horizontally and

  350. begin to look vertically. Begin to look

  351. up to Jesus.

  352. fix your eyes and your thoughts on

  353. Jesus.

  354. There's a a hymn uh that many people in

  355. the church uh at large have grown to

  356. know and they've sing it in churches and

  357. that hymn says this, listen to the

  358. words. It says this, "Turn your eyes

  359. upon Jesus.

  360. Look full in his wonderful face

  361. and the things of earth will grow

  362. strangely dim in the light of his glory

  363. and grace.

  364. Did you notice what happens when we turn

  365. our eyes to Jesus? When we look full in

  366. into Jesus's face, what happens?

  367. Everything horizontally, the things of

  368. this earth begin to become dim. They

  369. begin to fade away. And that's exactly

  370. what the author of Hebrews is telling

  371. us. Turn your eyes towards Jesus.

  372. Consider Jesus. Well, what do we need to

  373. consider him? Well, we learn two things

  374. about Jesus in Hebrews 3. As we consider

  375. him, we learn about his titles and we

  376. learn about a comparison.

  377. There are two unique titles Jesus in

  378. Hebrews chapter 3. The first one is

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

  379. this. The title of apostle.

  380. That's an interesting title, right?

  381. Apostle.

  382. When we hear that word in the church, we

  383. usually don't think of Jesus. We think

  384. of the one the ones whom Jesus has sent.

  385. We think of his disciples, the apostles.

  386. But apostle simply means one who is

  387. sent.

  388. Jesus is the ultimate apostle, the one

  389. sent from God to us.

  390. And this is the only place in the New

  391. Testament where Jesus is called

  392. apostle. And it's so huge because what

  393. it does is continues to unpack how Jesus

  394. is God's final and full revelation.

  395. And so we get this title of apostle but

  396. then we get this other title high

  397. priest.

  398. So the apostle

  399. Jesus is the one sent from God to us as

  400. high priest. He is the one who

  401. represents us before God.

  402. You see that

  403. he's the one who represents us before

  404. God. And he not he doesn't only offer do

  405. an offering of a sacrifice, but he

  406. becomes the sacrifice. And these two

  407. titles are huge. Apostle and high priest

  408. are huge because they represent two of

  409. our greatest needs.

  410. And here's what's going on. Our lives

  411. need to be accessed by God and we need

  412. access to God. Our

  413. lives need to be accessed by God and we

  414. need access to God. And what ends up

  415. happening with these two titles is that

  416. we see Jesus fully God, fully man, and

  417. also the perfect bridge.

  418. Because of our sin, we are separated

  419. from God.

  420. And there's nothing we can do, nothing

  421. we can do to get back to him. So, he had

  422. to come to us in the form of Jesus.

  423. Jesus the apostle sent to us from God.

  424. Jesus the high priest who represents us

  425. before God.

  426. Jesus

  427. bridges the gap

  428. and makes a way for us to be with God.

  429. So those are the titles that we get

  430. when we consider Jesus. But then there's

  431. this comparison that's also there.

  432. There's titles and then there's a

  433. comparison. What's what's the

  434. comparison? The comparison is this.

  435. Jesus is greater than Moses.

  436. Now, if you were reading this as a

  437. Jewish background

  438. Christian, you'd be like, whoa. Because

  439. Moses,

  440. Moses was the ultimate figure in the Old

  441. Testament. Through Moses, the people of

  442. Israel were uh delivered from Egypt.

  443. through Moses, the law was given by God

  444. to us.

  445. Moses is like the pinnacle of all the

  446. Old Testament.

  447. And what the author of Hebrews is doing,

  448. he's not he's not making Moses look bad.

  449. He he he's not he's not bringing Moses

  450. down. What he's saying is like, yes,

  451. Moses is this person and he's faithful,

  452. but Jesus is greater. He is better. He

  453. is more faithful.

  454. And he uses these powerful images, these

  455. powerful images uh uh to to describe

  456. this. He talks about a house and and he

  457. talks about how Moses is a part of this

  458. house and it's a faithful house,

  459. but Moses is a part of the house.

  460. Jesus is the builder of the house.

  461. Moses just a creature. Jesus is the

  462. creator. And by being the creator, he's

  463. superior to Moses.

  464. But not only is Moses just a part of the

  465. house and Jesus is the builder of the

  466. house, the roles they play play in that

  467. house are also different. Moses plays

  468. the role of a servant in the house.

  469. Moses is playing the role as a servant

  470. in the house. He's a part of the worker

  471. of the house. Yes. But Jesus is the son.

  472. And as the son, Jesus is lord over the

  473. house.

  474. Not only are they different in nature by

  475. one being the builder and one being a

  476. part of the house, they're different in

  477. role and responsibility in that one is

  478. son and lord and the other is a servant.

  479. Jesus is greater than Moses.

  480. And so as we do this search in Hebrews

  481. 3, what we do is we see we remember who

  482. we are and then we consider who Jesus

  483. is. And when we look at the two

  484. together, what we are given is this

  485. command, this exhortation to hold fast

  486. to Jesus.

  487. Hold fast to Jesus.

  488. What does it say in the verse 6 of

  489. Hebrews chapter 3? says, "But Christ is

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

  490. faithful as a son over God's house, and

  491. we are his house,

  492. if indeed we hold firmly to our

  493. confidence and the hope in which we

  494. glory."

  495. If indeed we hold firmly to our

  496. confidence, the hope in which we glory,

  497. there's a tension in that verse.

  498. There's a tension that that on first

  499. reading might make you uncomfortable.

  500. And the reason it might make you

  501. uncomfortable is because sometimes

  502. people approach this verse incorrectly.

  503. A and when you read this verse

  504. incorrectly, what it does, it creates

  505. this fear. This fear of salvation being

  506. uncertain

  507. that that that salvation is dependent on

  508. how strong my faith is.

  509. But that doesn't make sense because

  510. Hebrews consistently affirms the

  511. sufficiency of Jesus's saving work

  512. consistently throughout the letter. It

  513. affirms the sufficiency of Jesus's

  514. saving work. So then what's going on

  515. here?

  516. There's a scholar named Albert Mohler

  517. and he writes it this way. He says,

  518. "Only those who persevere in faith will

  519. be saved,

  520. and all who have genuine faith will

  521. persevere."

  522. Did you get that?

  523. Only those who persevere in faith will

  524. be saved, and all who have genuine faith

  525. will persevere.

  526. This is not telling us h about to be

  527. confident in our faith. It's telling us

  528. to be confident in the one whom our

  529. faith is in.

  530. I was trying to think through like what

  531. does that look like? I'm trying to

  532. figure out what what does that look

  533. like? And I was thinking back to when my

  534. kids were younger, uh, you know, maybe

  535. like five, four years old, and we were

  536. at a pool

  537. and and they they wanted they didn't

  538. know how to swim yet, but they wanted to

  539. go swimming. And and I remember I was uh

  540. by the edge of the pool and I was

  541. holding out my my arms to them so that

  542. they could jump in the pool and I would

  543. catch them. Now the younger one um she

  544. would just leap into the pool. Uh I I

  545. barely would get my hands up. Sometimes

  546. I had to like really quick rush my hands

  547. up to catch her. She just loved the

  548. water and so she was just leaping into

  549. the pool. Reckless abandon. And

  550. sometimes we think of faith as having to

  551. be like that. that we have to have

  552. reckless abandon, that nothing should

  553. come our way, nothing should stop us, we

  554. should just boldly jump into wherever

  555. God leads us. And parts of faith are

  556. like that.

  557. But somehow we elevate that faith to

  558. like this is the only kind of faith that

  559. that is acceptable.

  560. Let me tell you about my other kid.

  561. This is what would happen when they got

  562. to the edge of the pool.

  563. Oh, they didn't jump in. I mean, they

  564. they stood there and they, you know,

  565. they rocked back and forth like

  566. pretending like they were going to jump

  567. in,

  568. but this is what they did. They looked

  569. at me and they kept their eyes on me and

  570. then they would go like this, crouch

  571. down low

  572. and reach forward until they were

  573. touching my hands. And then they would

  574. just slip into the pool.

  575. Just slip into the pool.

  576. That's kind of what I think the faith in

  577. Hebrews is actually talking about.

  578. It's not talking about some superhero

  579. faith where we are just confident in our

  580. ability to be faithful.

  581. It's a faith that is just staring

  582. straight at the one we want to be

  583. connected to as we lean in towards the

  584. one we're trying to be connected to,

  585. keeping our eyes fixed

  586. on him.

  587. Hebrews 3 is not telling us to cling to

  588. our own self effort. It's not telling us

  589. to trust in our consistency.

  590. It's telling us that our confidence is

  591. in the gospel and that the our

  592. confidence is in the person whom the

  593. gospel proclaims.

  594. What we need to understand is we do not

  595. enter into a relationship with Jesus by

  596. faith

  597. and then remain in that relationship by

  598. works.

  599. You get that? We do not enter

  600. by faith and then remain by works. We

  601. don't have faith in our faith. We have

  602. faith in Jesus.

  603. Jesus is our unfailing

  604. hope.

  605. So here's what we need to understand

  606. that in Hebrews 3, the call of Hebrews 3

  607. 1:6 is this. Remember who you are.

  608. Consider who Jesus is and hold fast to

  609. Jesus.

  610. Hebrews 3 is not TELLING US TO TRY

  611. HARDER TO HOLD ON.

  612. and saying look harder at Jesus. The

  613. whole point of Hebrews 3 1-6 is look at

  614. Jesus.

  615. Look at Jesus.

  616. There's a reason all of the commands of

  617. Hebrews are anchored in a clear vision

  618. of Jesus. Only by fixing our eyes

  619. squarely on him, squarely on him, can we

  620. live the way that Hebrews calls us to

  621. live.

  622. So, how do we do that this week?

  623. What are we going to do to fix our eye

  624. on Jesus? What are we going to do to

  625. look at Jesus?

  626. Well, we're in the third week

  627. of a book that is all about Jesus. We're

  628. in a third week of a book that is

  629. constantly

  630. telling us who Jesus is and what he's

  631. done and why that matters to us.

  632. So for this week, revisit Hebrews

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  633. chapters 1-3. Just revisit chapters he

  634. 1-3 in Hebrews. Read them again. Read

  635. them slowly. Take some notes. Rewatch

  636. the sermons if you want to.

  637. Revisit what scripture has to say about

  638. who Jesus is and what he's done.

  639. The whole point is to look at Jesus. So

  640. let's make sure that we are looking at

  641. Jesus consistently and accurately.

  642. And as we do that,

  643. as we do that, we will resist the

  644. tendency to drift. We'll stop looking

  645. horizontally

  646. and this week we'll look vertically.

  647. We'll look up at Jesus.

  648. Let's pray.

  649. Lord, we thank you so much for your love

  650. and your goodness.

  651. We thank you for the ability to actually

  652. use technology so that we can still come

  653. together and learn from your word today

  654. and and and sing and worship you.

  655. God, I ask you that you would help us to

  656. keep our eyes fixed on Jesus.

  657. that we would turn our eyes upwards

  658. and that we would look vertically

  659. instead of horizontally,

  660. that we would stare in Jesus's wonderful

  661. face and allow the things of this earth

  662. to grow dim.

  663. that whether life right now is good, bad

  664. or in between,

  665. we will resist drift not by putting our

  666. faith in our efforts or faith in our

  667. faith,

  668. but instead

  669. by putting our faith in the person

  670. who we are trusting in.

  671. Help us to look at Jesus

  672. to remain focused

  673. and to press forward.

  674. We pray this in Jesus name. Amen.
