  1. We're in a series on the book of Hebrews

  2. called Jesus is better. And so far we've

  3. talked about Jesus is better than the

  4. priests and better than the prophets,

  5. better than Moses, better than the

  6. angels. This morning we're going to look

  7. at the fact that Jesus provides rest

  8. which is better than any external rest

  9. you and I are able to experience. Now,

  10. just to make sure

  11. this message is needed, I thought we'd

  12. start with a little quiz. So, let's talk

  13. about the need for rest and let's take a

  14. little fatigue assessment. Anybody out

  15. there tired? Are you tired? Ra. Oh, we

  16. got a few hands up. Okay. Uh, I'm not

  17. going to leave it go leave it go at

  18. that. Some of you are so full of energy

  19. and so untired you didn't stop at the

  20. coffee bar because you putting caff

  21. caffeine into your system would be like

  22. gasoline on a fire. Others of you are

  23. really tired and you're can't wait for

  24. the sermon to start so you can nap for

  25. the next 30 minutes. Hopefully, you'll

  26. be able to stay awake. Here's a little

  27. fatigue assessment. Now, you need to

  28. actually fill this out. So, if you have

  29. your outline when you came in, you'll

  30. notice under the need for rest, need for

  31. RNR, there are five uh numbers and a yes

  32. and a no next to them. No questions. I'm

  33. going to give you the question. Here's

  34. what you have to do. Circle either the

  35. yes or the no if that statement pertains

  36. to you. All right. So, here's the first

  37. one. I live with a constant sense of

  38. hurry. Never enough time to get it done.

  39. More expectations than margin. I live

  40. with a constant sense of yes or no. I

  41. see some yeses. Okay, next one. I have

  42. trouble turning my mind off. So, even if

  43. you do get to uh lie down and you're

  44. going to try to your mind doesn't stop,

  45. right? And so, you're rehearsing the

  46. details from the day. You're planning

  47. the conversations for the next day. And

  48. if you're like me, we can be real clever

  49. in those planning sessions, can't we?

  50. Yeah, we're planning the con. You can't

  51. turn your mind off. Yes or no? Three.

  52. I am spiritually busy. You go to church,

  53. you go to small group, you come

  54. Wednesday night, you participate in lots

  55. of spiritual activities, but you feel

  56. spiritually shallow. So, you're very

  57. busy doing spiritual things, churchy

  58. things, but you don't feel you have

  59. roots that are too deeply uh sunk into

  60. anything. Next one.

  61. I'm easily irritated and emotionally

  62. short. Now, be careful how you know who

  63. you are. We walk on eggshells around

  64. you. Never know when you're going to

  65. blow, right? You're easily irritated

  66. emotionally. Yes or no? Interestingly,

  67. that relates to rest. We're going to

  68. see. And next one,

  69. I feel pressure to prove myself. And so,

  70. you can't stop performing because then

  71. people may think less of you. You can't

  72. stop earning because then your identity

  73. is going to be crushed a little bit. And

  74. so, you've got to keep running. Got to

  75. keep performing because somehow your

  76. identity, who you are, is connected to

  77. how you perform. All right. How'd you

  78. do? Let me sh let me tell you how to

  79. calibrate those or actually do that. If

  80. you circled one or two yeses, you're

  81. tired, but life's manageable, right?

  82. You're able to kind of coast through.

  83. You can handle it. If you circled three

  84. or four,

  85. you're fatigued

  86. and your faith is suffering. And if you

  87. circled all five, when we read the

  88. passage on rest today, you need to write

  89. your name above this, right? because

  90. this was written for you. All right.

  91. Now, we're going to go come to the

  92. scripture and we're going to see where

  93. the author of Hebrews says, "The rest

  94. that Jesus provides is better than any

  95. other kind of rest you can imagine." So,

  96. if you have your Bibles, your phone,

  97. your iPad, whatever you want, turn to

  98. Hebrews chapter 3. I'm going to start

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

  99. reading in verse 16. I'm going to read

  100. through chapter 4:12. This is all about

  101. rest. And I'm going to warn you ahead of

  102. time. It's a pretty dense passage. So,

  103. if you're tired, you're going to be

  104. tempted to nod off. Hang in there.

  105. There's a lot of weird pictures,

  106. different combinations. He's making

  107. complex arguments. Hang in there. We're

  108. going to kind of give you We're going to

  109. hopefully give you some hooks to hang

  110. things on so we can understand what the

  111. author is saying and we can experience

  112. the rest that he speaks of. All right.

  113. As I read through, you think of the

  114. pictures. We're going to look at

  115. pictures. The pictures of rest. Verse 16

  116. of Hebrews 3.

  117. Who were they who heard and rebelled?

  118. Were they not all those Moses led out of

  119. Egypt? And with whom was he angry for 40

  120. years? Was it not with those who sinned,

  121. whose bodies perished in the wilderness?

  122. And to whom did God swear that he that

  123. they would never enter his rest if not

  124. to those who disobeyed? So we see that

  125. they were not able to enter because of

  126. their unbelief. Chapter 4. Therefore,

  127. since the promise of entering his rest

  128. still stands, let us be careful that

  129. none of you be found to have fallen

  130. short of it. For we also have had the

  131. good news proclaimed to us, just as they

  132. did, but the message they heard was of

  133. no value to them because they did not

  134. share the faith of those who obeyed. Now

  135. we who have believed enter that rest,

  136. just as God has said. So I declared on

  137. oath in my anger, they shall never enter

  138. my rest. And yet his works have been

  139. finished since the creation of the

  140. world. For somewhere he has spoken about

  141. the seventh day in these words. On the

  142. seventh day God rested from all his

  143. works. And again in the passage above he

  144. says they shall never enter my rest.

  145. Therefore, since it still remains for

  146. some to enter that rest, and since those

  147. who formerly had the good news

  148. proclaimed to them did not go in because

  149. of their disobedience, God again set a

  150. certain day, calling it today. This he

  151. did when a long time later he spoke

  152. through David as in the passage already

  153. quoted, "Today, if you hear his voice,

  154. do not harden your hearts." For if

  155. Joshua had given them rest, God would

  156. not have spoken later about another day,

  157. there remains then a Sabbath rest for

  158. the people of God. For anyone who enters

  159. God's rest also rests from their works,

  160. just as God did from his. Let us

  161. therefore make every effort to enter

  162. that rest so that no one will perish by

  163. following their example of disobedience.

  164. For the word of God is alive and active,

  165. sharper than any double-edged sword. It

  166. penetrates even to the dividing of soul

  167. and spirit, joints and marrow. It judges

  168. the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

  169. Nothing in all creation is hidden from

  170. God's sight. Everything is uncovered and

  171. laid bare before his eyes of whom of him

  172. to whom we must give account. All right,

  173. you got it. I'll close in prayer. We're

  174. done. You're good. You get a rest. Uh,

  175. fairly complicated, right? All right.

  176. So, we looked at the need for rest. You

  177. took your little quiz and now that those

  178. verses actually speak to the rest that

  179. comes through the gospel, but the author

  180. does it in pictures. He does it in the

  181. form of metaphors. He gives us three

  182. different metaphors that describe this

  183. rest. And there are common themes

  184. underneath the metaphors. And you're

  185. going to see this often if you haven't

  186. noticed it already in Hebrews. Here's

  187. what the writer of Hebrews does. The

  188. writer of Hebrews looks back to the Old

  189. Testament, looks back to those pictures,

  190. looks back to those shadows, and then

  191. doesn't just bring them forward, shows

  192. how those shadows are actually shadows

  193. of the reality of Jesus and what he came

  194. to do. So writer of Hebrews looks back

  195. to the shadows Old Testament moves

  196. forward to the reality of Jesus and then

  197. says now since the shadows pointed to

  198. Jesus live today in light of the shadow

  199. but ultimately because of the reality.

  200. All right, three metaphors. I'm going to

  201. show you the verse verses and I'm going

  202. to ask you to kind of yell out the

  203. picture the metaphor, right? We'll see

  204. how good you are. Here's the first one.

  205. And to whom did God swear that they

  206. would never enter his rest if none if

  207. not to those who disobeyed? All right,

  208. that whole context around that verse,

  209. what in the world is he talking about?

  210. What's the rest behind th those words?

  211. Any guesses?

  212. I'll help you out because you're

  213. napping, right? It's the rest of the

  214. promised land. So, here's the picture,

  215. right? And all that all that stuff at

  216. the beginning and earlier in chapter 3,

  217. I didn't have time to read all that.

  218. Here's what's going on.

  219. Moses was sent to the Israelites. They

  220. were enslaved in Egypt. You know what?

  221. If you're a slave, you don't get much

  222. rest. And so God says, "I'm going to

  223. lead Israel out." And where's he taking

  224. them? Where's he leading them? To the

  225. promised land, which is called the land

  226. of rest. So I'm going to take you from

  227. the burden, from the suffering of

  228. slavery, and I'm going to move you to

  229. the land of promise, the land of rest.

  230. That's the picture. But when they leave

  231. Egypt, they don't immediately show up in

  232. the promised land of rest. What they do?

  233. No, they leave the pro they leave is

  234. they leave Egypt and they wander in a

  235. desert. Actually, the word that I read

  236. here is wilderness. And here's where we

  237. get tripped up a little bit. We live in

  238. lush green, actually snowy Pennsylvania

  239. these days. When I say wilderness and

  240. you're in Pennsylvania, you think

  241. probably trees and brooks, rivers,

  242. little deer running down to get a drink

  243. before their meat for the winter. You

  244. know how it works, right? We live in But

  245. that's not wilderness in the Bible.

  246. Wilderness in the Bible always refers to

  247. a desert. What is a desert? A desert is

  248. a place that cannot sustain life.

  249. And as Israel wandered in the desert,

  250. they could not survive there unless God

  251. showed up regularly and continuously

  252. by miraculously providing for them. You

  253. cannot sustain life in the desert. God

  254. provides life in the desert. Now, here's

  255. a a little interesting tidbit for you if

  256. you don't know. Um, some of you may go

  257. to Sunday school, maybe in a small

  258. group, so you may be able to answer. How

  259. long did it take the Israelites to get

  260. from Egypt to the promised land? How

  261. long did that journey take?

  262. >> 40 years. 40 years. Do you know how long

  263. it should have taken? A few weeks. You

  264. can walk from Egypt to Israel in a few

  265. weeks, even taking your time. What in

  266. the world happened that took him 40

  267. years? That's what the writer of Hebrews

  268. is telling us. Here's what happens.

  269. Leave slavery. Leave your place of

  270. burden and suffering, go through the

  271. ordeal of the desert for a short period

  272. of time, and then recognize the land of

  273. rest. But because of their disobedience,

  274. because of their lack of faith, they

  275. wandered in the desert for 40 years

  276. and then eventually

  277. they made it to the land of rest. You

  278. got it. First picture u picture of

  279. promised land being the land of rest.

  280. Next metaphor

  281. for elsewhere somewhere he has spoken

  282. about the seventh day in these words. On

  283. the seventh day God rested from all his

  284. works. And again in the passage above he

  285. says they shall never enter my rest.

  286. That's not promised land rest. What rest

  287. is being spoken about here? This is the

  288. rest of creation and this is God

  289. resting. Right? So, if you read the

  290. first couple chapters of the Bible,

  291. here's how it goes. God created

  292. all that exists in six days. And then on

  293. the seventh day, he rested. Now, God

  294. didn't rest on the seventh day because

  295. he was tired. It wasn't like he was worn

  296. out the way we get worn out. God doesn't

  297. get tired. He doesn't get weary. He

  298. doesn't work up a sweat and need to take

  299. a break. No, he rests. But it's an

  300. interesting kind of rest. The work is

  301. completed. The work's done, right? It's

  302. also this internal completion where God

  303. is satisfied. You see, rest on the

  304. outside means work is completed. Rest on

  305. the inside means that you're satisfied.

  306. Now, how do we know that from Genesis 1

  307. and 2? Because it goes like this. On day

  308. one, God made this and then he said it

  309. is good. That's satis that's inside,

  310. right? On the second day, God made this

  311. stuff and he said it is good

  312. satisfaction six days. And on this on

  313. the day he made human beings, what does

  314. he say? It's very good. So something

  315. with this rest we're already learning in

  316. creation and promised land that there's

  317. this external rest, the rest of the

  318. promised land, no longer slavery, no

  319. longer in the wilderness, but it's

  320. connected somehow internally to trust

  321. and faith and satisfaction. There's an

  322. external and an internal part to this

  323. rest. And we see it in the first two

  324. metaphors. And then we get a third one.

  325. Here's the third one. A little more

  326. complicated, but you'll all get it.

  327. For we also have had the good news

  328. proclaimed to us just as they did. But

  329. the message they heard was of no value

  330. to them because they did not share the

  331. faith of those who obeyed. So here we go

  332. again. What's good news? That's gospel.

  333. So the third picture of rest that the

  334. writer of Hebrews brings out is gospel,

  335. the good news. Now notice we see that

  336. external internal part again, right?

  337. There's the external part of obeying and

  338. doing based on the internal part of

  339. faith and belief. And so rest has an

  340. external component stopping the activity

  341. based on the internal component of rest

  342. and recalibration. Is that how it works?

  343. So three metaphors help us understand

  344. what's going on. Now

  345. there's also a pattern in how that

  346. works. So in creation six days of work

  347. once that's completed there's rest.

  348. wandering in the wilderness for that

  349. period where there's trusting God rather

  350. than yourself. And then there's the rest

  351. of the promised land, the gospel. You're

  352. living life trying to work hard to cover

  353. your inadequacies, cover your guilt and

  354. shame until Jesus comes. Then there's

  355. rest from the work. But that internally

  356. is transacted by faith and trust. That's

  357. how rest works in the Bible. Three

  358. pictures. the writer of Hebrews very

  359. carefully selected to remind us of rest.

  360. Now he also does does something really

  361. interesting. Rest is one of the ideas

  362. and there are a number of these but rest

  363. is one theme that actually runs from the

  364. beginning of the Bible to the end all

  365. all the way through. So let me explain

  366. it to you this way. We already looked at

  367. the creation right? God works for six

  368. days and on the seventh day he rested

  369. and then God says you know what I want

  370. this to be the rhythm. This will now be

  371. the cadence for my people. I want them

  372. to I don't want them to work as much as

  373. they can. Not 24/7. No, no, no. They

  374. need to take a break from the work. They

  375. need to trust me to provide just like I

  376. did in the wilderness. Trust me to

  377. provide. They can rest. Not maximum

  378. activity. There's rest. Then eventually

  379. there are slaves in Egypt and God says,

  380. "I'm going to deliver you from this land

  381. of bondage. Go through a little bit of

  382. an ordeal in the desert where you learn

  383. to trust." And then based on that trust,

  384. I'll leave you in a promised land, a

  385. land of rest. But then the writer of

  386. Hebrews quotes Psalm 95. And Psalm 95

  387. says, "This rest is still future."

  388. What could be future? Rest of creation.

  389. That's not future. That's past. Rest the

  390. promised land. That's Oh, no. The rest

  391. is still future. Hang in there. Don't be

  392. like those that went before. Believe so

  393. you can enter the rest.

  394. And then we get the rest of the gospel.

  395. What does Jesus say?

  396. Come to me all who are weary and heavy

  397. laden and I will give you rest. But

  398. that's not the end either. When you turn

  399. to the end of the scripture, end of the

  400. Bible, you discover the new heavens and

  401. the new earth is the place of ultimate

  402. rest. And so from the beginning to the

  403. end, there's this theme of activity

  404. leads to ordeal. Ordeal prompts faith.

  405. Faith leads to rest. One of the main

  406. themes of the Bible. Well, that brings

  407. us to uh our third point. And here's

  408. where you're going to have to work a

  409. little bit. Let's call this the paradox

  410. of God's rest. The paradox of God's RNR.

  411. Um this happens in two ways. Let me f

  412. first of all mention this one. When he's

  413. telling us how to enter the rest, here's

  414. what the verse says.

  415. Let us therefore

  416. make every effort to enter the Wait a

  417. minute. Make every It told me to work

  418. real hard in order to rest. That doesn't

  419. mean you work and then you get the

  420. result. No, no, no. You've got to do

  421. something in order to enter the rest.

  422. Well, what is that really hard work?

  423. What's that effort that you have to that

  424. you have to employ? Well, he actually

  425. tells us in the next few verses. Now,

  426. that if you hang out at church a lot or

  427. you've kind of read the Bible a few

  428. times, you've got a famous verse right

  429. here, right? 4 412. Here's what it says.

  430. For the word of God is alive and active,

  431. sharper than any two-edged sword. It

  432. penetrates even to the dividing of soul

  433. and spirit, joints and marrow. How many

  434. of you have ever heard that verse

  435. before? All right. Now, I'd be willing

  436. to bet I'm not going to bet. I'd be

  437. willing to bet some of you have those

  438. words in a plaque embroidered on a

  439. pillow or somewhere around your house.

  440. Why is that? Because we read that the

  441. word of God is living and active,

  442. sharper than any two-edged sword, able

  443. to cut between soul and spirit, joints

  444. and marrow, and we think

  445. that's so comforting.

  446. >> Comforting? That's threatening. You

  447. know, we oft

  448. comfort. No, those words are dangerous.

  449. Do you feel a sense of comfort is if

  450. somebody's swinging a double-edged sword

  451. around? Right? Imagine your grandkids

  452. are playing. They got a real

  453. double-edged sword or swinging under.

  454. That's dangerous. Um, well, what in the

  455. world is going on? Uh, here's what's

  456. going on.

  457. In order to find rest,

  458. you can't find it superficially.

  459. So, what does God's word do? What does

  460. the scripture do? What's the gospel do?

  461. It penetrates.

  462. It doesn't just deal with the

  463. superficial with the external actions.

  464. The Bible actually deals with what's

  465. driving all of that superficial

  466. activity. So it works like this. We

  467. often live with a in a sense a frantic

  468. activity. Lots of activity, lots of

  469. noise, and we need to keep it going,

  470. right? That's why we did the quiz.

  471. Notice they went from physical activity

  472. to mental activity. Um, we live in a

  473. sense of frantic action,

  474. but stopping the frantic action doesn't

  475. solve the problem. The Bible goes right

  476. to the heart of the problem. God knows

  477. that the problem with the frantic

  478. activity and lack of rest isn't really

  479. an activity problem. It's a heart

  480. problem. The scripture goes down to the

  481. real issue. Um, I know a number of you

  482. have had surgery. How's surgery work?

  483. Hurt precedes the healing.

  484. Pain

  485. precedes

  486. the rest.

  487. That's what this verse is saying. And so

  488. if you if the surgeon doesn't cut you

  489. with the scalpel, if there's no pain, if

  490. there's no time in the desert, if

  491. there's no sense of work doing the

  492. activity, there can be no healing.

  493. What did Israel learn in the desert?

  494. They learned that the desert can't

  495. sustain life, but God does sustain life.

  496. And so rather than trusting my efforts,

  497. which weren't going to supply life in

  498. the desert, I'm going to learn to trust

  499. in God. And as I trust in God, he

  500. regularly supplies. And it took him 40

  501. years to learn and they still didn't

  502. learn it. Well,

  503. we didn't learn it too well either, do

  504. we? And so we're at a frantic pace. Lots

  505. of activity. Not just busy on the

  506. outside, busy on the inside. Because

  507. we're chasing the wrong stuff, the

  508. activity never ends.

  509. The scripture cuts to the heart of the

  510. matter. This verse is not giving us um

  511. an anthropological model to understand

  512. people. No, no, no. It's saying, yeah,

  513. the Bible doesn't just deal with the

  514. externals. It's not just the put ons and

  515. put offs of self-help. It deals with the

  516. engine that's driving that. If you trust

  517. the wrong thing, you'll live with

  518. frantic activity. If you're somehow

  519. putting your trust in all the money you

  520. can accumulate, your life will be out of

  521. out of order. You'll be running a

  522. million miles an hour trying to get more

  523. and more and more and protect what you

  524. have. If you're living because you're

  525. loving your reputation or you're

  526. building a reputation, there'll be lots

  527. of activity on the outside because

  528. you're running running trying to build

  529. your resume. You see, what's on the

  530. inside is what's driving what's on the

  531. outside. And the author of Hebrews says

  532. the Bible goes after the real problem,

  533. not the superficial problem. The real

  534. problem is not putting our bodies at

  535. rest. The real problem is learning how

  536. to put your heart at rest. Once you do

  537. that, you will be able to rest on the

  538. outside. And all the metaphors point to

  539. the same thing. The metaphors all say

  540. life in this world is unsustainable,

  541. but God regularly provides. Will you

  542. look to yourself to provide life? If you

  543. do, you'll be frantic. If you trust God,

  544. you'll be able to rest because he has

  545. provided all that you need. Um, but

  546. we're going to talk about a couple

  547. practice because some of you said,

  548. "Well, how in the world do I do this?

  549. I'm I'm trying to sleep here. All right,

  550. here we go. Three three practices.

  551. Here's the first one. Now, you got to do

  552. something with your body in order to get

  553. to the real work. Quit working.

  554. Quit all the activity. Um, most of you

  555. know this. If not, I'm going to tell you

  556. right now, I am not a car guy.

  557. Um, I can wash my car. That's about it.

  558. I don't know how to open the hood. I

  559. don't know how I I can put air in the

  560. tires when the little light goes on.

  561. That's all I do. You know what I have

  562. learned though that preventative

  563. maintenance is pretty important. When

  564. that little light comes on and says it's

  565. time to do this, I need to do that. You

  566. know what the difference is? If you

  567. don't do preventative maintenance,

  568. you'll never have your car in the

  569. Barrett Jackson

  570. antique car show. Never. Where will your

  571. car be? In a junkyard. Preventative

  572. maintenance allows your car to function.

  573. Preventative maintenance allows your car

  574. to fulfill what it's supposed to do. If

  575. you don't do that, that preventative

  576. maintenance, if with lack of

  577. preventative maintenance, that car is

  578. not going to run well. Same with our

  579. lives, right? God says you need some

  580. preventative maintenance on a regular

  581. basis. Whatever the rhythm works best

  582. for you, quit working on the outside,

  583. that's like preventative maintenance.

  584. That's not the end. All the when the

  585. Bible talks about rest, it doesn't just

  586. mean take naps regularly. You've got to

  587. do something when you rest. Oh, that

  588. brings us to the second thing. Not only

  589. quit working, you've got to reflect and

  590. remember. Isn't it interesting? That's

  591. exactly what the writer of Hebrews shows

  592. us how to do. What's he say? You want to

  593. learn about rest? Oh, let me tell you.

  594. Here's how you here's how you rest.

  595. Remember, Israel

  596. was in bondage in Egypt. God led them

  597. out not because they were good. God led

  598. them out because they trusted. They

  599. wandered in the desert for 40 years

  600. because they didn't trust. Eventually,

  601. they got to the promised land of rest

  602. because they trusted God and God

  603. provided. That's the message. Oh, yeah.

  604. Faith

  605. is what brings rest.

  606. How about creation? Six word, six days

  607. God creates. Seventh day we rest. Um I I

  608. usually smile when I think about this.

  609. Um on what day did God create human

  610. beings? What day? Day six. Day six.

  611. And what did God tell the people to do

  612. on day seven? Rest. Isn't that good? So

  613. the first day, right? And so day one,

  614. the very next day in your daytimer,

  615. rest. What in the world? Usually the

  616. first day, well, get up, get moving, set

  617. your agenda, accomplish the task, set

  618. out all your to-dos. No, no, no. Um,

  619. rest.

  620. What's the message? God saying,

  621. "I got this.

  622. Your life fulfillment, all that you need

  623. is not based on what you provide. Not

  624. based on your frantic activity. I will

  625. do all that you need. Just rest. Now, he

  626. does give us things to do and we have to

  627. do it. I'm not telling you do nothing.

  628. But rest. Build those patterns of rest

  629. and reflection. So, promised land,

  630. wilderness, rest. Creation rest. Psalm

  631. 95. And God still this rest is still

  632. future as we look for Jesus provides

  633. ultimate rest but even now there's a

  634. sense in which we're we're wandering in

  635. the wilderness right we're here and life

  636. can't be sustained by the our effort but

  637. God provides God sustains our lives day

  638. by day as we look to the ultimate place

  639. of rest the new heavens and new earth

  640. reflect and remember the story

  641. and then lastly this is the harder

  642. assess and reorient.

  643. I put this last because we started with

  644. a little fatigue assessment.

  645. How'd you do? Now, beyond we're among

  646. I'm not going to ask you. How'd you do?

  647. Are you restless?

  648. Are you restful?

  649. My guess is um

  650. none of you got five nos on that quiz.

  651. Many of you got five yeses. two, three,

  652. four.

  653. What's that mean? That means something's

  654. going on and it's a skew. Something's

  655. not right. And God gives us this little

  656. mechanism of assessment. God says, you

  657. can evaluate

  658. your trust by measuring your rest. So,

  659. if you're frantic on the outside,

  660. that's a good indication you're trusting

  661. the wrong stuff on the inside. Because

  662. if you're trusting the right stuff on

  663. the inside, you can rest because God's

  664. got this. If God through Jesus has taken

  665. care of our ultimate problem, we can

  666. trust him to take care of the other

  667. problems. Um this morning uh backstage

  668. before the service we usually have a

  669. prayer time and somebody will share a

  670. little devotional thought. Uh Patrick um

  671. shared this morning. Um he read a

  672. passage about Mary. You know, I don't

  673. know why we're back in Christmas, but he

  674. read the Mary story from Luke. And here

  675. here's what the devotional said.

  676. The greatest act of faith in Mary's

  677. life,

  678. she allowed God to write her story.

  679. She rested in the fact that God was

  680. writing her story.

  681. Uh, how about you? How about me? We

  682. don't rest because we want to take that

  683. pen, right? We want to write our own

  684. story. We know how tomorrow should go.

  685. We know what should happen this next

  686. week. We know how our life should go. We

  687. know what you're at with that promotion

  688. in our work. We know what that health

  689. report should be. When you take the pen

  690. and you write the story, you're never

  691. going to rest.

  692. How do you rest? Allow God to write the

  693. story. It won't always be the way you

  694. want it, but in the end, you'll realize

  695. it was the best way. We can rest. The

  696. author knows what he's doing. Let's

  697. pray. Father, we confess that we are a

  698. restless group. not a restful group. But

  699. Lord, you want us to be able to rest.

  700. Not rest in our accomplishments, not

  701. rest in what we can perform, not rest in

  702. our successes or achievements,

  703. resting in what you've accomplished on

  704. our behalf through Jesus. Lord, help us

  705. to quit work once in a while

  706. to remember and reflect the pattern of

  707. the story is repeated over and over

  708. again. and help us to regularly assess

  709. and make changes to be able to rest on

  710. the inside recognizing all of our guilt

  711. has been covered and you are satisfied.

  712. That's why we can rest on the outside.

  713. The bill's been paid. We pray in the

  714. name of Jesus who paid it. Amen.
