His wounds [music] which mar the chosen
one.
Bringing

the cross.

Ashamed [music] I hear [singing] my
mocking voice
called out
among [music and singing] the scoffers.
It

Him there
until it was [singing] accomplished.

His dying [music and singing] breath has
brought me life.
I know
that it

>> is finished.
It is finished.
It is finished. [music]
I will

>> not boast [singing] in anything.
No gifts,
no gifts, no power, [singing] no wisdom.
But I will [singing and music] boast in
Jesus Christ.
His death and resurrection. [singing]
Why should
Why should I gain [music and singing]
from His reward?
I cannot

>> give an answer.
But this [music and singing] I know with
all my heart.
His
wounds have paid [music and singing] my
ransom.
Why should I gain from
[singing and music] His reward?
I cannot

my heart.
His wounds
have [music] paid my ransom.
Now Father, we come tonight
in some ways with sadness because of the
reminder of what you went through,
the suffering you experienced for us.
As we
express our love to you through song
this evening, as we read your word and
let that impact our hearts, would you
grow us in gratitude as we reminded of
what you have done for us.
In your name we pray.
Amen.
We'd like to welcome you tonight to our
our Good Friday service and and just
want to set the stage for you of of what
you're going to experience tonight. Our
hope and our prayers, we've been praying
for you,
is that tonight is a night of
remembrance
where you can quietly just remember who
Christ is
and what He has done for you.
But it's also a time to be reverent and
to just celebrate and remember all that
He has done, for His suffering that He
suffered on the cross for you and for
me.
We'll also have a time that we will as a
as a body, we will remember and
celebrate what Christ did on the cross
for us through communion.
Our hope and our prayer tonight is if
you do not know Him, that you will hear,
that you will see and you'll get [music]
to experience all that Christ has done
for us. And as we remember from Hebrews,
it was for the joy set before Him that
He endured the cross. So tonight,
remember
and celebrate all He has done.
Tonight we're reminded of the physical
suffering
that Christ endured for us.
I'm going to read Isaiah 53
3 through 5.
He was despised and rejected,
a man of sorrows and acquainted with the
deepest grief.
We turned our backs on Him
and we looked the other way.
He was despised
and we did not care.
He was despised and yet it was our
weakness He carried.
It was our sorrows that weighed Him
down.
And we thought His troubles were
punishment from God,
a punishment for His own sins.
But He was pierced for our rebellion,
crushed for our sins.
He was beaten so that we could be whole.
He was whipped [music] so we could be
healed.
In Luke 23:26,

Luke 23:26
it says,
"As they led Jesus away,
a man named Simon, who was from from
Cyrene, happened to be coming from the
countryside.
The soldiers seized [music] him and put
him on the cross behind
on the cross on him and made him carry
[music] it behind Jesus."
You know, I
never go home that way,
but
my normal route was blocked,
so I tried to circle around the crowd.
And that's when I saw Him.
He'd been
whipped,
just torn
apart.
The lashes left His back shining
crimson.
And on His head
was a crown
of thorns pushed down.
The blood drenched His face.
He looked barely alive,
but they made him carry a cross.
Any man would struggle under that
weight.
But this man
beaten
bleeding
somehow
walking
until he fell.
Something in me wanted to run to him.
Something else
wanted to run away.
I didn't get to choose.
Hands seized me before I could see them.
Iron grips pulled me from the crowd and
threw me beside him. My heart was
pounding. My mind was racing. My face
was now just inches from his.
And I could hear him breathe.
There was pain
in his breath.
Exhaustion.
But somehow
peace.
Then
I understood.
I was to carry
the cross.
I saw the wood
rough
splintered
covered in blood
his
blood.
I hesitated.
But the butt of a Roman spear ended
that.
So, I lifted the cross onto my shoulder.
And as I stood, his blood ran onto me.
I shuddered.
And then looked up.
He was walking again.
And I
followed him.
Staring
at his wounded back
feeling
his blood
covering me.
Just one question echoing in my mind.
How did this happen?

beaten,
mocked,

Bowing

Praise and

Sent [singing and music]
of heaven,
God's
own Son, [singing]
to purchase
and
redeem,
and
magnify
all the [singing]
guilty ones
who
nailed Him to
the tree.

where Your

>> out
over me.
Now
my soul

honor

Now my [music and singing] debt
is paid,

blood
that my Jesus

Tonight, we have the incredible
opportunity, the privilege, to remember
and reflect
on what Christ has done for us on the
cross through communion. So, if you were
able to grab the elements when you came
in, [music]
go ahead and get those ready now. If
not, there are ushers that will be
coming up and down the the aisles that
will make sure to give one. You can just
put your hand up and they will make sure
to to get you that.
As we
as we just heard and sung the the words
of that song,
of that rugged cross, our my salvation.
There is a there was a a part in there
that really gripped me that Jesus was
sent
to reconcile the very ones who nailed
Him to the cross.
That that Jesus came
not only to save us, but to save the
people that persecuted Him.
That Jesus died for the the guys that
were next to him on the cross.
What I want us to do is just take some
time
to pause, to slow down, and remember
what Christ has done for you. As you've
as you've heard the songs that we have
sung, as you've heard the story of a
gentleman that came [music] along and
carried the cross.
Take some time and just think about what
Jesus physically suffered.
How He emotionally suffered, how He
spiritually suffered as He says, "My
God, my God,
why have you abandoned me?" As He took
on the full weight of our sin on the
cross. So, if you will, bow your head,
close your eyes,
and just take a moment
and thank Him for what He has done.
Think about
the suffering that He went through.
Father, we thank you
for the fact that you freely gave your
Son.
Because God, you loved us so much
that you know in the depths of our sin
that we so desperately needed a savior.
God, whether it was us
or whether it was a thief on the cross
or the people that put Jesus on the
cross,
that God, that
that you loved us so much that you
freely gave.
And Jesus, we thank you so much for
being the obedient Son that though you
knew you would suffer,
your love was greater than what you
would have to go through because you
loved us so much.
Jesus, we thank you for giving your life
freely
so that we could receive the gift of
salvation, so that we could receive
grace [music]
that you so freely give.
And God, we are just so thankful for
what you've done,
and we love you, and in your name we
pray. Amen.
If you're having if you have your
elements,
it's interesting as Jesus as He's
preparing for His death on the cross, He
meets with His followers.
And He shares some things with them. He
wants to prepare them, but He also wants
them to remember what He's about to do.
And so He says, "Those of you that
follow me, I want you to do this as a
way to remember
what I've done by giving my body, but
also
by my shedding of the blood that will
happen on the cross."
And so we read these words,
says, "The Lord Jesus on the night He
was betrayed,
He took a loaf of bread,
and when He had given it,
He gave thanks, and He broke it and
said,
>> [music]
>> 'This is my body that is for you.
Do this in remembrance of me. Take and
eat.'
In the same way, He took the cup after
supper, saying,
>> [music]
>> 'This cup is a new covenant in my blood.
Do this as often as you drink it in
remembrance of me.
Take and drink.'
And it says, "For often
for as often as you eat this bread
and drink this cup, you proclaim the
Lord's death until He comes."
Let's pray.
Father, thank you
for the remembrance. Thank you for the
opportunity for us to reflect.
Jesus, we thank you for what you've
done.
God, may we see ourselves
just like that thief on the cross.
That he did not deserve grace,
but Jesus, simply by his belief in you
that he was trusting you,
that you promised him something better
than he could ever receive on this
earth.
That you were promising him a
relationship with you, but also eternal
life.
And God, as we have now received that as
we placed our trust in you, as we follow
you,
we're so grateful for what you've done,
and it's in your name we pray.
Amen.
In addition to physical suffering
that Jesus
endured,
He also endured immense emotional,
spiritual suffering,
and a separation from his father.
Matthew 27:41-46

Matthew 27:41–46
It says,
"The high priests, along with the
religious scholars and leaders, were
right there mixing up with the rest of
them,
having a great time poking fun at him.
He saved others. He can't save himself.
King of Israel is he?
Then let him get down from that cross.
We'll all become believers then.
He was so sure of God. Well, let him
rescue his son now,
if he wants him.
He did claim to be God's son, didn't he?
Even the two criminals crucified next to
him joined in the mockery.
From noon to 3:00,
the whole earth was dark.
Around mid-afternoon, Jesus groaned out
of the depths, crying loudly, "Eli, Eli,
lama sabachthani?"
Which means, "My God, my God,
why have you forsaken me?"

bears our sins away,
slain for [singing] us.

the promise made that all who come in

in

>> this bread
of life,
>> [music]
>> and we drink
of
>> [singing]
>> his
sacrifice
>> [music]
>> as a sign
of our [singing]
bonds
of
peace

>> around the [singing] table of the king.
>> [music]
>> The body [singing]
of our Savior, Jesus
Christ, torn for you.
Eat and [singing] remember
the wounds that heal, the death [music]
that brings us life,

>> paid the price to [music] make us one.
So, we [singing and music] share
in this bread
of life,
>> [singing]
>> and we drink
>> [music]
>> of his sacrifice
as
>> [singing]
>> a sign
of our
bonds of
love around the table

of the king.
The blood [singing] that cleanses
[music] every stain of sin, shed for
[music] you.
Drink and remember [singing]
he drained this cup so all may enter

>> in to receive [singing]
the life
of God.
>> [music]
>> So, [singing] we share
in this bread
>> [music]
>> of life,
and we drink
>> [singing]
>> of his [music] sacrifice
as
a sign
>> [singing]
>> of
our bonds
of

>> Around the [singing] table of the king.
And so with thankfulness [music] and
faith [singing] we rise to respond.
And to remember [singing]
our call to follow in [music] the steps
of Christ as his body
[singing] here

>> on earth.
As we [singing] share
>> [music]
>> in his
suffering,
we proclaim
>> [singing]
>> Christ will
come again
and will
join
>> [singing]
>> in [music] the
peace of
heaven
around [singing and music] the table of
the king.
I'd heard of him before.
Everybody knew who Jesus was.
His name was everywhere.
But then there he was
hanging right next to me.
It didn't make any sense.
But at that moment in time, the only
thing I could concentrate was the pain,
the violent pain surging through my
body.
I looked at the mob and I was tearing
them up inside.
Yeah, I was guilty.
I deserved this. But this this was too
much.
I was looking at the soldiers and the
leaders and the mob
and I was tearing them up
and then I turned on my bitterness to
him. I joined in the cheering and the
mocking.
And then I looked at him.
I mean I really looked at him.
His eyes
they weren't like my eyes.
They weren't like the other guys' eyes.
There was no sadness.
There was
there was sadness.
There was no hatred. It was a deep
aching sadness.
That's when I realized
he's not doing this for himself.
He's doing this for us.
He's doing this for the leaders
>> [snorts]
>> the
soldiers
for the mob.
He's doing this for me.
And there was more. There was
compassion.
How could he look at us like that?
I didn't know what to say.
But behind the sorrow
there was power.
I mean he was suffering. We were all
suffering.
But he wasn't losing.
He wasn't failing.
He was winning.
And at this
bleak, deep, dark moment of death
I sensed the victory.
And the only question in my mind was
who is this man?
Him, mercy.
Him, a
>> [singing]
>> murderer.
Walking up
this lonely [singing]
hill.
What have I done?
Don't remember. [singing]
[music]
No one knows
how good I feel.
And I know
that my time
is coming soon.
It's been so long
>> [music]
>> such a long [singing] time
since I've lived
in peace and [singing]
rest.
Now I am
>> [music]
>> a destination.
I guess things
count [music] for the best.
And I know [singing and music]
my time
is coming soon.
Who [singing] is this man?
This [music] man beside me.
Called
king [singing] of the Jews.
They don't [music] believe
he's the Messiah. [singing]
Somehow
I know [music and singing] that it's
true.
They laughed at him [music and singing]
in mockery
and beat him till he bleeds.
They nailed him to a rugged [music]
cross. [singing]
They raised him.
Yet they raised him up
next to [singing and music] me.
My time has come.
I'm slowly fading. [singing]
I deserve what I receive. [singing]
But Jesus, [music] when [singing]
you're in your kingdom
could you please [music and singing]
please remember
me?
He looks at me still holding
[music and singing] on.
The tears fall from his eyes.
He says, "I tell the truth.
Today
>> [music and singing]
>> you will be
with me
in paradise.
Oh, yeah.
And I know
>> [music]
>> that my time
>> [singing]
>> my time is coming soon.
>> [music]
>> Oh, yeah.
I know
>> [music and singing]
>> that my time
my time is [music and singing] coming
soon.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, I know
>> [singing]
>> paradise
paradise [singing]
>> [music]
>> is coming soon.
One of the criminals hanging beside him
scoffed.
So, you're the Messiah, are you?
Prove it by saving yourself and us, too,
while you're at it.
But the other criminal protested.
Don't you fear God even when you have
been sentenced to die?
We deserve to die for our crimes, but
this man has done nothing nothing wrong.
Then he said, "Jesus
remember me when you come into your
kingdom."
And Jesus replied
"I assure you today
you will be with me in paradise."
By this time it was about noon and
darkness fell across the whole land
until 3:00.
The light from the sun was gone. And
suddenly the curtain in the sanctuary of
the temple was torn down the middle.
Then Jesus shouted, "Father,
I entrust my spirit into your hands."
And with those words,
he breathed his last.
As we finish our service tonight,
our prayer has been that you
had the opportunity to experience
and see and hear
about a savior that suffered and died
for you.
We ask that in a moment when you leave
this room, that you leave so quietly,
just reflecting and thanking and
remembering what Christ has done for
you.
But we also want to let you know some
really good news.
That the story does not end here.
We invite you back on Easter Sunday
morning as we will have services at 9:00
and 10:30 to celebrate, to shout, to
proclaim that we celebrate a [music]
resurrected savior, that he did not stay
in the tomb, but he resurrected from the
dead. That we have hope in him.
So we invite you to that, but tonight,
as you leave,
be thinking about what our savior did
for you.
