  1. You know, before we start, I was

  2. thinking uh this morning I was thinking

  3. about just kind of different words that

  4. you associate with Easter, right? Um I I

  5. was just thinking and some of them have

  6. changed throughout the years, right?

  7. Like so if you're older, you might be

  8. thinking to yourself like how about

  9. Easter bonnet? Anyone remember Easter

  10. bonnets? Yeah, they kind of faded away.

  11. I was going to wear one today, but it

  12. didn't match my outfit.

  13. Easter bonnets or or maybe if you're

  14. younger like Easter bunny.

  15. Like I I love going to the mall now that

  16. my kids are grown up

  17. and seeing parents take their kids

  18. screaming and crying to get a picture

  19. with the Easter. It's great. I love

  20. that. And then there's Easter baskets or

  21. or Easter eggs and and you have

  22. different kinds of candies in those in

  23. those Easter baskets. Right. I do have a

  24. question though.

  25. Why is it that Reese's

  26. only makes the chocolate peanut butter

  27. egg during this? They should be all year

  28. round. It should be It should be all

  29. year round. And then also like the jelly

  30. beans. Like

  31. don't come at me with the jelly belly

  32. stuff. Brock's jelly beans, right? Like

  33. some of you want to say amen. It's okay.

  34. You can say amen to them. Brock's butt.

  35. But but but but

  36. there's nothing more disappointing

  37. than accidentally

  38. biting into a licorice flavored jelly.

  39. That's the worst. It's the worst. Right.

  40. It's the worst.

  41. What What What are some other words?

  42. What are some other words for some

  43. church, right? Church you can associate

  44. with Easter or or maybe tomb or maybe

  45. angels.

  46. Well, today we're going to actually talk

  47. about

  48. the most important word that you can

  49. associate with Easter.

  50. Today we're going to talk about the

  51. resurrection.

  52. We're going to talk about the

  53. resurrection.

  54. Easter is not Easter without the

  55. resurrection.

  56. You see, the resurrection

  57. is the very claim at the center of

  58. Christianity.

  59. The resurrection isn't meant to be

  60. symbolic.

  61. It isn't meant to be a metaphor.

  62. It's the claim that Jesus actually

  63. lived. That he was fully man and fully

  64. God. He actually lived a life and that

  65. he actually died. Not that he was in a

  66. coma, but that his heart stopped

  67. beating. He died. And then he was put in

  68. a tomb.

  69. And then on the third day,

  70. that heart started to thump again.

  71. Started to thump.

  72. And Jesus

  73. rose from the dead, alive, and eternally

  74. victorious.

  75. The resurrection

  76. is the claim that Jesus is alive.

  77. And if the resurrection is true, then

  78. that changes everything. Because if the

  79. resurrection is true, Jesus is who he

  80. said he was. And he did what he said he

  81. would do.

  82. You see, when Jesus died on the cross,

  83. his disciples, his friends, everyone

  84. thought that his story had ended.

  85. They thought that his story was done.

  86. You see, the big idea for today, the big

  87. idea for today's sermon is this.

  88. Because Jesus is alive,

  89. the end became the beginning.

  90. Because Jesus is alive, the end became

  91. the beginning. Let's unpack that a

  92. little bit. We're going to turn to the

  93. book of Luke. We're going to look at

  94. Luke chapter 24. If you don't have a

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  95. Bible with you, you can uh use one of

  96. the Bibles we have here uh at Calvary.

  97. If you don't own one, take it home. It's

  98. our gift to you. We believe that the

  99. Bible is filled with life-changing

  100. truth, and we want you to have access to

  101. that. So turn to page 7:22 if you're

  102. looking at a church Bible. Otherwise,

  103. turn to Luke chapter 24,

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  104. starting at verse 1.

  105. On the first day of the week, very early

  106. in the morning, the women took the

  107. spices they had prepared and went to the

  108. tomb. They found the stone rolled away

  109. from the tomb,

  110. but when they entered, they did not find

  111. the body of the Lord Jesus.

  112. Here's the first thing we need to learn

  113. about the resurrection. The first thing

  114. we need to learn about the resurrection

  115. is this.

  116. They weren't expecting it to happen.

  117. There was no one outside of the tomb

  118. that day with a sign saying, "You did

  119. it.

  120. Welcome back." They didn't have lawn

  121. chairs outside of the tomb just kind of

  122. waiting, looking at their watches,

  123. waiting for it to roll away, the stone

  124. away roll away and him to walk out. No.

  125. When they approached the tomb, they came

  126. expecting death.

  127. They came expecting death.

  128. You see, the story of the resurrection

  129. does not start

  130. with this dynamic faith. It actually

  131. starts with honest grief.

  132. It starts with honest grief.

  133. They approach the tomb and they're

  134. carrying spices. And the reason they're

  135. carrying spices is because they're going

  136. to prepare the body, imbalm the body as

  137. it's going to be continue to just lay to

  138. rest in a tomb.

  139. From their perspective,

  140. the story was over.

  141. It was over.

  142. What we need to understand about that

  143. is that Easter

  144. is not about wishful thinking.

  145. Easter

  146. is about a reality in the resurrection

  147. that breaks into a moment when death

  148. seemed final.

  149. And that's huge.

  150. That's huge. Let me show you why. Let's

  151. keep going.

  152. Starting at verse four.

  153. While they were wondering about this,

  154. suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed

  155. like lightning stood beside them. In

  156. their fright, the women bowed down with

  157. their faces to the ground. But the men

  158. said to them, "Why do you look for the

  159. living among the dead?

  160. He is not here. He has risen.

  161. Remember,

  162. remember how he told you while he was

  163. still with you in Galilee, the Son of

  164. Man must be delivered over to the hands

  165. of sinners, be crucified, and on the

  166. third day be raised again.

  167. Then they remembered his words.

  168. See, the next thing we need to learn

  169. about the resurrection is this.

  170. Jesus said it

  171. and then he did it.

  172. Jesus said it and then he did it.

  173. What do they say? Why do you look for

  174. the living among the dead? And then they

  175. said, "Remember,

  176. remember what he said."

  177. And then they remembered his words and

  178. everything changed.

  179. The resurrection is not just a miracle.

  180. It's a fulfilled promise.

  181. Jesus didn't just rise. He kept his

  182. word.

  183. He kept his word.

  184. The word of Jesus went through the

  185. ultimate test. It went through the test

  186. of death.

  187. And Jesus kept his word through that

  188. test.

  189. And what he says is true.

  190. You see, the resurrection does not call

  191. us to blind optimism.

  192. It doesn't call us to pretending that

  193. everything is okay.

  194. The resurrection confronts us

  195. and it asks us if we will believe that

  196. Jesus is telling the truth.

  197. Because if Jesus is telling the truth

  198. and if Jesus is alive, there is no room

  199. for neutrality.

  200. You either trust Jesus or you don't

  201. trust Jesus.

  202. Jesus said it

  203. and then he did it.

  204. He fulfilled his word.

  205. He kept his word.

  206. Let's keep going on in verse nine.

  207. When they came back from the tomb, they

  208. told all these things to the levan and

  209. to all the others. It was Mary

  210. Magdalene,

  211. Joanna,

  212. Mary the mother of James, and the others

  213. with them who told this to the apostles.

  214. But they did not believe the women

  215. because their words seemed to them like

  216. nonsense.

  217. Peter, however, got up and ran to the

  218. tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of

  219. linen lying by themselves.

  220. And he went away wondering to himself

  221. what had happened.

  222. See, what we need to understand is that

  223. the resurrection confronted unbelief.

  224. It confronted unbelief.

  225. What happens when the women go to tell

  226. the disciples? What happens when they go

  227. to tell them the news?

  228. What did they do? Did they go and say

  229. amen?

  230. We knew it.

  231. Oh, they didn't do that. You know what

  232. they did?

  233. They did what I usually do when my wife

  234. comes into the room and starts telling

  235. me something. Nonsense.

  236. She's on that side. I'm going to keep

  237. looking at all of you here.

  238. They said it's nonsense.

  239. is impossible.

  240. The news of the resurrection didn't make

  241. sense.

  242. But then there's Peter.

  243. What does Peter do?

  244. Peter hears this news

  245. and something inside of him,

  246. something inside of him begins to wake.

  247. Something inside of him begins to stir.

  248. Something like hope,

  249. something like

  250. a possibility,

  251. a longing.

  252. He doesn't have it all figured out, but

  253. what does he do? He gets up and he runs.

  254. He runs.

  255. I wonder how many of us are like Peter,

  256. which is not certain,

  257. not quite settled,

  258. but at the point

  259. that we're unable to ignore the

  260. possibility.

  261. Unable to ignore the possibility.

  262. Because if Jesus is alive, everything

  263. changes.

  264. Everything changes.

  265. Sometimes faith does not begin with

  266. certainty.

  267. Sometimes it begins when you can no

  268. longer ignore the possibility.

  269. When you can no longer ignore the

  270. possibility.

  271. And so what happens? Peter runs and he

  272. gets to the empty tomb. And what does he

  273. do?

  274. He leaves marveling, wondering, not

  275. fully understanding, but unable to

  276. ignore what is happening.

  277. Sometimes the resurrection doesn't

  278. remove all your questions,

  279. but it confronts you with something you

  280. can't ignore.

  281. And what the resurrection confronts us

  282. that we can't ignore is this. The claim

  283. that Jesus has defeated death.

  284. Jesus has defeated death.

  285. The empty tomb is not just proof that

  286. Jesus is alive. It is proof that death

  287. has been overthrown.

  288. If we were to go to another part of the

  289. Bible, if we were to go to the book of

  290. First Corinthians

  291. in chapter 15 verse 55, we would hear

  292. this. The author writes and he says,

  293. "Where, O death is your victory? Where,

  294. O death is your sting? The sting of

  295. death is sin and the power of sin is the

  296. law. But thanks be to God.

  297. He gives us the victory through our Lord

  298. Jesus Christ.

  299. Gives us the victory through our Lord

  300. Jesus Christ.

  301. When the author wrote those words in

  302. First Corinthians, he wasn't being

  303. theoretical. He was taunting death. He

  304. was taunting death.

  305. You see, on the cross, Jesus dealt with

  306. sin, but in the resurrection, he defeats

  307. death.

  308. That means that death no longer has the

  309. final word. Death no longer has the

  310. final word. It no longer has the final

  311. word over your story.

  312. Jesus does.

  313. The empty tomb points to a greater

  314. reality

  315. because Jesus passed through death and

  316. overcame it. Death met Jesus

  317. and lost

  318. and lost.

  319. Death met Jesus and lost.

  320. Jesus has authority over death.

  321. And if he has authority over death, he

  322. has authority over everything. He has

  323. authority over everything.

  324. And because of that, because of that,

  325. the end was not the end.

  326. The end was not the end. The end was the

  327. beginning. The end was the beginning.

  328. Because what we need to understand is

  329. this. The resurrection begins a new

  330. reality.

  331. The resurrection begins a new reality

  332. again. Because Jesus rose, what looked

  333. like the end became a beginning. Not

  334. just for him, but for us. For us.

  335. The resurrection is not simply the

  336. continuation of a story. It is the start

  337. of an entirely new reality.

  338. It is the beginning of fulfilled

  339. promises where everything that Jesus

  340. said is proven true.

  341. It is the beginning of the fact that

  342. death is defeated. That the grave no

  343. longer has the final word.

  344. It is the beginning of a living hope.

  345. Of a living hope.

  346. Not wishful thinking. Not wishful

  347. thinking. something that is alive and

  348. secure.

  349. Again, if we would go in the Bible, if

  350. we would read in 1 Peter chapter 1,

    1 Peter 1 chapter mention

  351. verse three, it says, "Praise be to the

  352. God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  353. In his great mercy has given us new

  354. birth into a living hope through the

  355. resurrection of Jesus Christ from the

  356. dead.

  357. Hope is not a feeling we have to try to

  358. hold on to.

  359. Hope is a person who walked out of the

  360. grave.

  361. Hope is a person who walked out of the

  362. grave.

  363. That changes everything.

  364. In Luke chapter 24, we see different

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  365. responses

  366. to the revealing of that hope to the

  367. resurrection.

  368. Some

  369. are witnesses and they believe

  370. like the women they run proclaiming to

  371. whoever can listen.

  372. Some are uncertain

  373. like the disciples

  374. unsure and thinking it just sounds like

  375. nonsense. not sure what to believe.

  376. And some have something stirring. They

  377. don't have it figured out, but they

  378. begin to run

  379. towards the truth because they can't

  380. ignore the possibility.

  381. I tend to think that that describes some

  382. of us in here as well.

  383. Some of us have heard the gospel, the

  384. good news of Jesus, and we receive it

  385. and we believe it.

  386. So go and tell everyone and anyone.

  387. Spread the news.

  388. Some of us are unsure.

  389. It just sounds

  390. impossible.

  391. And then some of us, something is

  392. stirring.

  393. We're not certain yet.

  394. But we can't ignore the possibility.

  395. What we need to understand is that the

  396. question is not how do you feel.

  397. The question is what will you do with

  398. the risen Jesus?

  399. What will you do with the risen Jesus?

  400. You see, if the resurrection is true,

  401. then Jesus is not just part of history.

  402. He is Lord. He is Lord.

  403. He died for our sin. He rose in victory.

  404. And he calls people to trust him.

  405. The resurrection is not just something

  406. to believe. It is someone to trust.

  407. It is someone to trust.

  408. See, in Luke 24,

  409. a bold claim is made.

  410. A bold claim that Jesus was crucified.

  411. He was buried

  412. and he was dead.

  413. But then the stone rolled away

  414. and the heartbeat started to thump

  415. again.

  416. and he rose

  417. alive and victorious.

  418. What looked like the end

  419. was not the end.

  420. It was the beginning. It was the

  421. beginning.

  422. It was the beginning of a restored

  423. relationship with God. The beginning of

  424. freedom from sin.

  425. The beginning of a new life that starts

  426. now. and lasts forever.

  427. The resurrection doesn't just give you a

  428. hope for someday.

  429. It gives you a starting point

  430. for a new life. Now,

  431. so what do you do with that?

  432. What do you do with that?

  433. You see the invitation of Easter is

  434. simple.

  435. Come as you are.

  436. Trust Jesus. Receive what he has done.

  437. That's the invitation of Easter. That's

  438. the invitation of the resurrection. Come

  439. as you are. Trust Jesus. Receive what he

  440. has done.

  441. Come as you are. You don't have to clean

  442. yourself up. You don't have to get

  443. yourself to a certain point. You don't

  444. have to get yourself to what you think

  445. other people's standards are. Jesus

  446. desires you to come as you are

  447. and trust him.

  448. Trust him and receive what he has done.

  449. Through the resurrection, Jesus invites

  450. you into his story and into his hope.

  451. You know, maybe today

  452. you wouldn't call yourself a Christian.

  453. Maybe today you're unsure of what you

  454. believe. Maybe today you have doubts or

  455. or even a complicated history with

  456. church. And maybe even church has hurt

  457. you at some point.

  458. And if that is you, uh, I apologize for

  459. that. And if I'm the one who hurt you, I

  460. apologize for that as well.

  461. But you need to understand that we're

  462. just a bunch of broken, messed up

  463. people.

  464. But we serve a perfect God

  465. who loves you more than you can possibly

  466. imagine.

  467. So I ask you just for a moment not to

  468. look at broken people like myself, but

  469. to look to the perfect one who did

  470. everything to claim you back for

  471. himself.

  472. You see, if the resurrection is true

  473. and Jesus is alive,

  474. then this is not just a story to admire.

  475. It's an invitation to accept.

  476. Jesus did for us what we could not do

  477. for ourselves. He entered into our

  478. brokenness. He carried our sin. He faced

  479. death in our place and rose again so

  480. that we could be forgiven.

  481. Brought back to God and given new life.

  482. The question is, how will you respond to

  483. the risen Jesus? How will you respond to

  484. his invitation?

  485. If you're at the point where you're just

  486. like, "Well, I want

  487. I want to trust Jesus. I want to receive

  488. what he has done." What does that even

  489. look like? Just tell him.

  490. Just tell him.

  491. In a moment, we're going to pray and you

  492. can just tell them. You can say

  493. something like, "Jesus, I believe you

  494. are alive. I know I need your

  495. forgiveness. I turn from running my life

  496. on my own and I place my trust in you.

  497. Forgive me, make me new, and lead me

  498. from this day forward.

  499. If you are trying to write down those

  500. words,

  501. don't worry about it.

  502. It's not about the words. It's not about

  503. magic words.

  504. It's not about how you pray. It's about

  505. the one whom you're praying to.

  506. Do you trust him?

  507. If you're ready to trust him, just tell

  508. him. Just tell him right now where

  509. you're at. Let's pray.

  510. Lord, we thank you

  511. for what the resurrection means and

  512. brings to our life.

  513. We thank you

  514. for keeping your word

  515. even when death was the obstacle to your

  516. keeping that word.

  517. We thank you for loving us so much that

  518. you died a brutal death for us.

  519. And we thank you for being so powerful

  520. that death could not hold you back.

  521. And Lord, if there's anyone here

  522. who needs to respond to that invitation

  523. to come as they are, just as they are,

  524. to trust Jesus and receive what you have

  525. done, I ask you that you would allow

  526. them to just tell you,

  527. to just tell you, to just trust you.

  528. And Lord, if there's anyone in here

  529. who's already made that choice and is

  530. following you and is a disciple of you,

  531. Lord, I ask you to make the truth of the

  532. resurrection just

  533. so wonderful in their lives.

  534. Let it cause them to be overflowing with

  535. joy. Let it cause them to have a passion

  536. to tell anyone

  537. the good news, the gospel.

  538. Lord, I pray over all of these people,

  539. over the people upstairs, over the

  540. people watching online.

  541. Do a mighty work in our hearts

  542. and help us to just keep you focused and

  543. centered.

  544. We pray this in Jesus name. Amen.
