  1. All right. If you have a Bible, you can

  2. turn to Ecclesiastes chapter 3. Uh if

    Ecclesiastes 3 chapter mention

  3. you don't have a Bible, we have uh

  4. Bibles in the seats in front of you. You

  5. can take that one. You can turn to page

  6. 457. If you don't own a Bible, take that

  7. one home. It's our gift to you. We

  8. believe that the Bible is filled with

  9. life-changing truth, and we want you to

  10. have access to that truth. So, take it

  11. home.

  12. Ecclesiastes chapter 3,

    Ecclesiastes 3 chapter mention

  13. starting in verse 16.

  14. And I saw something else under the sun.

  15. In the place of judgment, wickedness was

  16. there. In the place of justice,

  17. wickedness was there. I said to myself,

  18. "God will bring into judgment both the

  19. righteous and the wicked. For there will

  20. be a time for every activity, a time to

  21. judge every deed."

  22. I also said to myself, "As for humans,

  23. God tests them so that they may see that

  24. they are like the animals. Surely the

  25. fate of human beings is like that of the

  26. animals." The same fate awaits them

  27. both. As one dies, so dies the other.

  28. All have the same breath. Humans have no

  29. advantage over animals. Everything is

  30. meaningless.

  31. All go to the same place. All come from

  32. dust and to dust all return. Who knows

  33. if the human spirit rises upward and if

  34. the spirit of the animal goes down into

  35. the earth? So I saw that there is

  36. nothing better for a person than to

  37. enjoy their work because there is that

  38. is their lot. For who can bring them to

  39. see what will happen after them?

  40. Again I looked and saw all the

  41. oppression that was taking place under

  42. the sun. I saw the tears of the

  43. oppressed and they have no comforter.

  44. Power was on the side of their

  45. oppressors and they have no comforter.

  46. And I declared that the dead who had

  47. already died are happier than the living

  48. who are still alive.

  49. But better than both is the one who has

  50. never been born, who has not seen the

  51. evil that is done under the sun.

  52. Happy Mother's Day.

  53. I mean, seriously, this this guy at

  54. times when we're going through this

  55. book, I'm like, he needs to take a nap.

  56. Eats. He sounds hangry or something like

  57. he's just like it's all everything's

  58. meaningless.

  59. He's actually making a very important

  60. observation

  61. as he's going through all this stuff.

  62. And we're going to kind of go through it

  63. a little bit slower and pick it apart a

  64. little bit. But as he's going through

  65. all these observations, you know what

  66. he's saying?

  67. There's a problem with our world.

  68. There's a problem with our world. And

  69. what is his first example? He looks at

  70. where there should be justice. He's look

  71. at where things should be fair. In the

  72. place of justice, wickedness was there.

  73. The very place that was meant to protect

  74. people becomes corrupted.

  75. And what does he see? He sees courts

  76. that are corrupted. He sees power that's

  77. abused. He sees the innocent suffering,

  78. the guilty prospering.

  79. And if we're honest, we we still see

  80. that today, right? There's still

  81. corruption in our world. There's there's

  82. abuse of authority. There are broken

  83. systems. There's suffering that seems to

  84. go unanswered. The world is not as it

  85. should be.

  86. The world is not as it should be. And

  87. then and then what does he say? He says

  88. there's all this wickedness going on.

  89. But then what does he say in verse 17?

  90. He says, "I said to myself, God will

  91. bring into judgment both the righteous

  92. and the wicked. For there will be a time

  93. for every activity, a time to judge

  94. every deed." And this is where the

  95. tension lies.

  96. This is where the tension lies.

  97. The central tension of this passage is

  98. that there is injustice now

  99. and that there will be justice later.

  100. There's injustice now and then there

  101. will be justice later.

  102. What what does the teacher believe? The

  103. teacher believes that God sees evil and

  104. that God will one day judge. But what is

  105. his struggle? What is his struggle?

  106. Why the delay?

  107. Right? Why the delay? I don't know. But

  108. I I ask that sometimes to God. I'm like,

  109. what's taking you so long? Why the

  110. delay? Why does this keep happening?

  111. If God is just,

  112. why does injustice continue?

  113. It's because we live in the in between

  114. time.

  115. We live in between what is and what

  116. should be.

  117. And that's a time of waiting, a time of

  118. trust. And in this in between stage, the

  119. teacher is frustrated. And he expresses

  120. that frustration. Verse 18 he goes on

  121. and he and this is like he says I also

  122. said to myself as for humans God test

  123. them so that they may see that they are

  124. like the animals.

  125. Surely the fate of human beings is like

  126. that of the animals. The same fate

  127. awaits them both.

  128. As one dies so dies the other. All have

  129. the same breath. Humans have no

  130. advantage over animals. Everything is

  131. meaningless.

  132. All go to the same place. All come from

  133. dust and to dust all remain, all return.

  134. Who knows if the human spirit rises

  135. upward and if the spirit of the animal

  136. goes down into the earth? So I saw there

  137. is nothing better for a person than to

  138. enjoy their work because that is a lot.

  139. For who can bring them to see what will

  140. happen after them. What is he saying?

  141. He's saying everyone dies.

  142. Everyone has the same ending. The

  143. oppressed, they die. The oppressors,

  144. they die. The rich, they die. the poor,

  145. they die. All return to dust.

  146. And and he's like, "Human beings are

  147. like they're no different than animals."

  148. And and then he says something very

  149. interesting that you when you first read

  150. it, you're like, "Am I reading the

  151. Bible?

  152. Is this shouldn't this be in the Bible?"

  153. What does he say? He says, "Who knows

  154. whether the spirit of a man goes

  155. upward?"

  156. Well, I mean, the rest of the Bible says

  157. so.

  158. This isn't teaching that there's no life

  159. after death.

  160. Actually, later on in the book, if we

  161. were to read Ecclesiastes 12 verse 7, it

    Ecclesiastes 12:7

  162. says, "And the dust returns to the

  163. ground it came from, and the spirit

  164. returns to God who gave it." It's not

  165. talking about that there's no life under

  166. death. What after death? What is

  167. happening in this moment? What is

  168. happening when in this verse?

  169. He's having a moment.

  170. He's having a moment. He's having an

  171. honest moment where everything seems

  172. meaningless, where everything seems

  173. unfair. And he just You ever had like

  174. Okay, moms, you ever had

  175. your kid just start rambling stuff

  176. that's just like, "And you hate me and

  177. and you did this and and all and and

  178. they are just talking nonsense because

  179. they're just have all these emotions

  180. inside." What's going on with the

  181. teacher is that he has all these

  182. emotions inside and he just starts just

  183. like and I don't know. I don't even

  184. know. I don't I don't even know. He's

  185. having a moment.

  186. He senses that justice must come, but he

  187. cannot yet clearly see it.

  188. And so what does he do? He he expresses

  189. his longing for something better. And

  190. that's what Eccles Ecclesiastes does in

  191. the whole book. It leaves us with this

  192. longing. If you read the book, it

  193. actually offers very little answers to

  194. the questions that are asked.

  195. It it's meant to kind of stir up that

  196. longing, stir up those questions in in

  197. our hearts and just reflect them.

  198. But he's left with this longing. He's

  199. left with understanding that there's

  200. something wrong. There's a problem with

  201. our world.

  202. And then he goes further into in verses

  203. 1 to3 of chapter 4. He says, "Again, I

  204. looked and saw all the oppression that

  205. was taking place under the sun. I saw

  206. the tears of the oppressed and they have

  207. no comforter. Power was on the side of

  208. their oppressors and they have no

  209. comforter. And I declared that the dead

  210. who had already died are happier than

  211. the living who are still alive. But

  212. better than both is one who has never

  213. been born, who has not seen the evil

  214. that is done under the sun.

  215. What's going on there?

  216. Twice he says this phrase, there's no

  217. comforter. He's looking around and there

  218. are people who are being oppressed. He's

  219. looking around, there are people who are

  220. hurt.

  221. We see that today, right? Like there's

  222. things that are happening. There's

  223. there's human trafficking. There's

  224. there's all sorts of things that are

  225. going on in our world. There's there's

  226. wars. There's there's people who are

  227. poor who are taken advantage of. There's

  228. there's all sorts of hurt. And it feels

  229. like those who are being oppressed have

  230. no comfort. There's no comforter.

  231. There's no one standing up for them.

  232. And it would be very easy. It would be

  233. very easy to actually change this sermon

  234. and actually go like, "So that's what we

  235. must do is stand up for those who are

  236. being oppressed and and and have this a

  237. rally cry for justice." It'd be very

  238. easy to do that. There's actually a lot

  239. of Bible passages that talk about how we

  240. should speak up and how we need to

  241. actually live lives of justice. But what

  242. is going on? That's not this passage.

  243. That's not this passage. This passage

  244. isn't a cry rallying us for justice.

  245. It's actually just confronting it. And

  246. there's actually a deeper thing that's

  247. being confronted underneath.

  248. You see, what's going on is that this

  249. this author is not giving us a deep

  250. theology when he's writing these lines.

  251. What he's doing is he's he's speaking

  252. grief, honest grief from a broken world.

  253. He's speaking honest grief.

  254. And then he goes on further to kind of

  255. just explain how we got here.

  256. You see, there's a problem with our

  257. world and how did we get here? How he's

  258. he just goes and and he says there's

  259. something deeper that you have to

  260. understand.

  261. I was uh driving the other day and and

  262. um in the morning on my morning drive,

  263. there's this tree that I pass often and

  264. it's a hu it's a huge tree. You can't.

  265. It's like it's a huge tree, but it's one

  266. of those trees that you look at and

  267. you're like,

  268. "Something's off with that tree." Yeah.

  269. You ever look at a tree and you're like

  270. some something looks off with that tree?

  271. Like the leaves look weird. Not all the

  272. branches have the leaves. Like it's it's

  273. just you look on the outside and you're

  274. like, "Something's wrong with that tree.

  275. You can't quite tell it, but something's

  276. wrong with that tree." Well, after one

  277. of uh like the thunderstorms that we had

  278. a few weeks ago, like I'm driving by

  279. and a like almost half of that tree had

  280. fallen off. Like it broke off

  281. and it revealed what was wrong with the

  282. tree. It was completely hollow. It was

  283. dead inside.

  284. Whatever maybe some bugs, maybe some I

  285. don't know what had gone in, but it was

  286. completely eaten up from the inside.

  287. And what was revealed was the problem

  288. was actually something inside internally

  289. that you couldn't see. You could see

  290. something on the outside. Hey,

  291. something's wrong here.

  292. But it wasn't until you saw the inside

  293. that you actually were able to see

  294. exactly what was wrong.

  295. You see, that's what the author of

  296. Ecclesiastes does in this book. He says,

  297. "Hey, there's a problem with the world,

  298. but the bigger problem is that there's a

  299. problem with our hearts.

  300. There's a problem with our hearts.

  301. Ecclesiastes 4:es 4-6. And I saw that

  302. all toil and all achievement springs

  303. from one person's envy of another. This

  304. too is meaningless. A chasing after the

  305. wind. Fools fold their hands and ruin

  306. themselves. Better one handful with

  307. tranquility than two handfuls with toil

  308. and chasing after the wind.

  309. The problem is not just out there.

  310. It's very easy for us to look outside

  311. and be like, "Look at all the problems

  312. in the world. Look at all the injustice

  313. and not look internally and realize that

  314. there's a problem in here.

  315. There's a problem in here."

  316. He uses an interesting word. He uses the

  317. word envy.

  318. He says, "All toil is motivated by this

  319. envy."

  320. Envy.

  321. Maybe we might call it something

  322. different. Maybe we might describe it

  323. something different. Maybe we might say

  324. it's just keeping up with the Joneses.

  325. We live lives and sometimes we like to

  326. compare or we like to compete or we

  327. strive because someone always seems like

  328. they have more or someone always seems

  329. like they look better than us or they

  330. succeed faster than us or they get

  331. noticed or they get ahead.

  332. It's the social media dynamic, isn't it?

  333. You're constantly looking and comparing.

  334. And so we strive and we toil and

  335. suddenly work becomes something that it

  336. should not have become. It becomes our

  337. identity

  338. which leads to competition

  339. which leads to exhaustion.

  340. And and here's here's the crazy thing.

  341. As we try to climb that ladder in life,

  342. as we try to rise and rise, as we are

  343. climbing those those rungs of that

  344. ladder, you know what ends up happening?

  345. Usually what we step on is on the heads

  346. of other people. As we climb up, we

  347. climb up looking up and we step on those

  348. underneath us to get ahead.

  349. And there are different responses that

  350. we can have in that setting.

  351. and and there's different wrong

  352. responses that the teacher identifies.

  353. But then he says something different. He

  354. says, what does he say? Better one

  355. handful

  356. with tranquility.

  357. Instead of trying to grasp at everything

  358. and fill up our hands with everything

  359. and grasp and grasp better one handful

  360. just better one handful

  361. with tranquility.

  362. This tranquility that is being used is

  363. characterized by peace, is characterized

  364. by contentment.

  365. There's a difference between

  366. striving for being comfortable and just

  367. striving to be content.

  368. There's a difference.

  369. This tranquility looks for contentment.

  370. It looks for restfulness. It looks from

  371. freedom from envy.

  372. And this life of tranquility, what we

  373. would know today, which is different

  374. from the author of Ecclesiastes, but

  375. what we would know today is that this

  376. kind of life takes a gospel

  377. reorientation.

  378. It takes a gospel reorientation.

  379. The gospel changes our striving because

  380. in Christ, we are already accepted.

  381. We are already known. We are already

  382. secure. We are already loved.

  383. We do not need to prove our worth

  384. through achievement.

  385. It requires a gospel reorientation.

  386. And when we are not oriented on the

  387. gospel, when we start to live lives

  388. filled with envy, instead of that, when

  389. we start to live lives filled with com

  390. comparison, what ends up happening?

  391. Going back in, he says again, I saw

  392. something meaningless under the sun.

  393. There was a man all alone. He had

  394. neither son nor brother. There was no

  395. end to his toil. And his eyes were not

  396. content with his wealth.

  397. For whom am I toiling? He asked. And why

  398. am I depriving myself of enjoyment? This

  399. too is meaningless, a miserable

  400. business.

  401. When we live lives according to this

  402. grasping nature fueled by envy and when

  403. we just make achievement

  404. and being the better part of comparison

  405. our our our sole motive

  406. the result oftent times

  407. is isolation

  408. is loneliness.

  409. The teacher is describing a man who's

  410. endlessly working. Endlessly working.

  411. Not just endlessly working, but

  412. endlessly working for the wrong reasons.

  413. Endlessly accumulating and never

  414. satisfied

  415. and completely alone.

  416. When toil is fueled by envy, we will not

  417. just end up exhausted. We will end up

  418. alone.

  419. And what happens?

  420. Success without relationships becomes

  421. emptiness

  422. becomes emptiness.

  423. And so the teacher doesn't and for

  424. occasionally he tosses in some some

  425. positive answers to this. He gives a

  426. positive comparison. He gives a

  427. different answer to life. Ecclesiastes

    Ecclesiastes 4:9–12

  428. 4:9-12 says, "Two are better than one

  429. because they have good return for their

  430. labor. If either of them falls down, one

  431. can help the other up. But pity anyone

  432. who falls and has no one to help them

  433. up. Also, if two lie down together, they

  434. will keep warm. But how can one keep

  435. warm alone? Though one may be

  436. overpowered, two can defend themselves.

  437. A cord of three strands is not quickly

  438. broken.

  439. Oftentimes, I've read that passage

  440. actually at weddings. Uh it's usually uh

  441. when people are like tying uh a rope

  442. together, like braiding three strands of

  443. rope and they have this and it's on a

  444. beautiful picture and they braid it

  445. together and and I tell them at the end

  446. they're going to literally tie the knot.

  447. None of you got that, huh?

  448. They didn't get it either.

  449. But the reality is is that what the

  450. author is doing, he's not really writing

  451. a sentimental statement.

  452. He's actually writing a statement of

  453. survival

  454. because what does community provide? It

  455. provides help when we fail, warmth in

  456. suffering, strength in battle,

  457. companionship in hardship.

  458. The Bible rejects

  459. isolated individualism.

  460. We were made for relationship.

  461. We were made for relationship with God

  462. and relationship with others. That's the

  463. whole premise of our disciplehip model.

  464. Three relationships, disciplehip,

  465. relationships with God and relationships

  466. with others. We were made for that.

  467. And what we need to understand is that

  468. the church should be countercultural to

  469. life under the sun. Should be

  470. countercultural to that individualistic

  471. lonely life of envy and striving.

  472. The church shouldn't be about isolated

  473. achievement or comparison or performance

  474. or transactional relationships.

  475. No, it's a community. It's a caring

  476. community living life on mission

  477. together.

  478. It's about burdens shared, meals shared,

  479. grief shared, joy shared, life shared.

  480. The world says climb higher. The kingdom

  481. says carry one another.

  482. Carry one another.

  483. That's the whole reason that we are so

  484. passionate about that statement about

  485. being a caring community living life

  486. together on missions. That's the whole

  487. premise of why we emphasize small groups

  488. and why we emphasize volunteering. We

  489. were meant to do life together. We were

  490. meant to do life by carrying one

  491. another.

  492. And what Ecclesiastes does is when we

  493. don't live that way, it points out what

  494. happens when we live under that opposite

  495. premise. It keeps exposing, the book

  496. keeps exposing the same truth over and

  497. over. That life under the sun, it cannot

  498. carry the weight of ultimate hope.

  499. It can't.

  500. So what is the source of ultimate hope?

  501. What is the source of this hope that

  502. Ecclesiastes leaves us longing for?

  503. And how is that hope made available to

  504. us?

  505. You see,

  506. if the teacher is telling us that

  507. there's a problem in our world and that

  508. the deeper problem is that there's a

  509. problem in our hearts, then what is the

  510. solution to the problem?

  511. The solution is this.

  512. Jesus stepped into our problem.

  513. Ecclesiastes lets us know that the world

  514. is not right, our hearts are not right,

  515. and our lives are not right.

  516. So where does this life under the sun if

  517. it's not right? So where does hope come

  518. from?

  519. Not from under the sun,

  520. but from above it,

  521. but from above it.

  522. And the teacher grasped this by the end

  523. of the book of Ecclesiastes. We've read

  524. this verse, these two verses often in

  525. this series.

  526. The end, the last two verses of

  527. Ecclesiastes say this.

  528. Now all has been heard. Here is the

  529. conclusion of the matter. Fear God and

  530. keep his commandments. For this is the

  531. duty of all mankind. For God will bring

  532. every deed into jud judgment, including

  533. every hidden thing, whether it is good

  534. or evil.

  535. We have echoes of the cry of

  536. Ecclesiastes 3:17, right? There's all of

    Ecclesiastes 3:17

  537. this injustice. There's all of this

  538. wickedness. But God will one day bring

  539. judgment.

  540. God will one day make it right.

  541. Okay.

  542. So, God's going to one day make it

  543. right.

  544. But where does the hope come from?

  545. Where does hope come? If life isn't

  546. fair, where does the hope come from?

  547. Well, maybe, just maybe, we should read

  548. what that judgment looks like.

  549. Let's go to the last book of the Bible,

  550. Revelation chapter 20.

    Revelation 20 chapter mention

  551. And we get a picture of exactly what the

  552. author of Ecclesiastes is pointing to.

  553. Here's what it looks like.

  554. Revelation chapter 20, starting at verse

    Revelation 20 chapter mention

  555. 11.

  556. Then I saw a great white throne, and him

  557. who was seated on it.

  558. The earth and the heavens fled from his

  559. presence, and there was no place for

  560. them. And I saw the dead, great and

  561. small, standing before the throne, and

  562. books were opened.

  563. Another book was open,

  564. which is the book of life.

  565. The dead were judged according to what

  566. they had done as recorded in the books.

  567. The sea gave up the dead that were in

  568. it. And the death and Hades gave up the

  569. dead that were in them. And each person

  570. was judged according to what they had

  571. done.

  572. Then death and Hades were thrown into

  573. the lake of fire. The lake of fire is

  574. the second death. Anyone whose name was

  575. not found written in the book of life

  576. was thrown into the lake of fire.

  577. So, we got a few books here.

  578. Those first books

  579. reveal all of our actions, all of our

  580. deeds of all of humanity.

  581. And this is where we need to remember

  582. the problem of our hearts.

  583. All of us are deserving of punishment.

  584. All of us

  585. are deserving of punishment because we

  586. have a problem with our heart.

  587. It's easy for us to point out the

  588. wickedness in others without grasping

  589. the reality of the wickedness inside of

  590. us.

  591. We're all worthy of that punishment.

  592. Those books reveal it.

  593. But there's another book.

  594. There's another book.

  595. The book of life.

  596. And there's names written in that book.

  597. Names that don't deserve to be written

  598. in that book.

  599. But there is names written in that book.

  600. How do the names get written into that

  601. book? The names are able to be written

  602. to that book because Jesus entered into

  603. our unjust world.

  604. The only one who was truly righteous,

  605. the only one who was truly innocent

  606. experiences oppression.

  607. He experiences rejection.

  608. He experiences abandonment. He is

  609. condemned unjustly.

  610. The only one who deserved fairness

  611. received injustice.

  612. Why?

  613. so that unjust people like me and you

  614. could receive grace, forgiveness,

  615. reconciliation, and eternal life.

  616. Life is not fair.

  617. And we should thank God every day for

  618. that

  619. because if it was fair, there would only

  620. be the first set of books.

  621. But Jesus entered into our broken world.

  622. And because of that, because of his

  623. life, because of his death, because of

  624. his resurrection, we can live with hope

  625. in the midst of the brokenness of the

  626. world around us.

  627. The resurrection of Jesus declares that

  628. injustice will not win. Death will not

  629. win. Oppression will not win. One day

  630. every wrong will be judged and every

  631. tear wiped away and every sorrow undone

  632. and creation itself will be renewed.

  633. And so Jesus makes a way for our name to

  634. be written in the other book, the book

  635. of life.

  636. >> Hallelujah.

  637. That's the answer

  638. to why is life unfair.

  639. It's because God has amazing grace.

  640. And so that is offered to you that

  641. grace.

  642. You don't automatically get written into

  643. the book. You have to accept that grace.

  644. You have to accept Jesus's gift. You

  645. have to accept the work of his life,

  646. death, and resurrection. And when you

  647. do, you can face injustice without

  648. losing hope. You can work without

  649. comparison and envy. You can pursue

  650. contentment instead of endless striving.

  651. You can choose community over isolation.

  652. You can live for a kingdom that will not

  653. fade.

  654. And until that day,

  655. we live honestly, not pretending like

  656. there isn't pain in the world.

  657. but trusting in the God who makes all

  658. things right. Let's pray.

  659. Lord, we thank you for your goodness. We

  660. thank you for your grace. We thank you

  661. for the fact that life is not fair

  662. because if it was, we would all be

  663. deserving of death.

  664. We thank you for your son and the

  665. sacrifice

  666. that he made so that our names could be

  667. written in that book of life.

  668. We thank you that we look forward to

  669. that day not just so that the deeds of

  670. the wicked would be judged, but we look

  671. forward to that day with hope and

  672. gratitude because

  673. of Jesus

  674. and the way that he made a way for our

  675. names to be written in that book of

  676. life.

  677. Lord, I ask you that if there's anyone

  678. in this room who has not accepted that

  679. gift, who has not made that choice to

  680. follow you,

  681. that you would tug on their heart today,

  682. that you would make that real.

  683. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
