  1. Uh, so if you have your Bibles, turn to

  2. the last chapter of Ecclesiastes.

  3. Ecclesiastes chapter 12. Uh, if you

    Ecclesiastes 12 chapter mention

  4. don't own a Bible, we have some here in

  5. Solderton and also in Quakertown. Uh,

  6. just raise your hand in Quakertown. You

  7. can go get them in in Seron. They're in

  8. the seat racks. Take them home if you

  9. don't own one. It's our gift to you. We

  10. believe that the Bible is filled with

  11. life-changing truth. So, if you're

  12. looking at uh one of the Calvary Bibles,

  13. it's on page 461.

  14. Ecclesiastes 12, starting at verse 9.

  15. Not only was the teacher wise, but he

  16. also imparted knowledge to the people.

  17. He pondered and searched out and set in

  18. order many proverbs. The teacher

  19. searched to find just the right words,

  20. and what he wrote was upright and true.

  21. The words of the wise are like goats.

  22. their collected sayings like firmly

  23. embedded nails given by one shepherd.

  24. Be warned, my son, of anything in

  25. addition to them, of making many books.

  26. There is no end in much study wearies

  27. the body.

  28. Now all has been heard. Here is the

  29. conclusion of the matter. Fear God and

  30. keep his commandments. For this is the

  31. duty of all mankind.

  32. For God will bring every deed into

  33. judgment, including every hidden thing,

  34. whether it's good or evil.

  35. So, you ever get like to the end of a

  36. book

  37. or the end of a movie and and and it's

  38. concluded, but you're like, it's not

  39. resolved, right? Like you get to the

  40. end, you're like,

  41. I've invested so much time into this

  42. story. I've invested so much time into

  43. these characters. I in and it's done,

  44. but it's not done. You're like,

  45. something's missing here.

  46. And then you discover that there's an

  47. epilogue

  48. or an end credit scene, right? And in

  49. the epilogue or the end credit scene,

  50. everything's finally explained. What you

  51. were kind of like, hey, this is

  52. unresolved is kind of resolved in that

  53. epilogue or end credit scene. What we

  54. just read was the epilogue of

  55. Ecclesiastes.

  56. Actually, the tone shifted. The speaker

  57. shifted. It's no longer the teacher

  58. writing. It's actually someone

  59. commenting on what the teacher has

  60. written. It's an actual epilogue.

  61. And in that epilogue, we learn so much

  62. things. In that epilogue,

  63. we learn about the journey that the

  64. teacher has gone. We learn about uh how

  65. he's collected these these proverbs. We

  66. learn about all this. We're celebrating.

  67. We're we're examining the teacher and

  68. his works. But then something happens.

  69. Then we get to verse 11. And in verse

  70. 11, we're introduced to something, a

  71. concept that we really need to

  72. understand in order to understand the

  73. whole book of Ecclesiastes. In verse 11,

  74. we are introduced to the fact that there

  75. is a shepherd who speaks. There's a

  76. shepherd who speaks.

  77. Let's take a look at verse 11 again. The

  78. words of the wise are like goats.

  79. They're collected sayings like firmly

  80. embedded nails given by one shepherd.

  81. All right. And if you don't know what a

  82. goad is,

  83. because growing up in the city, we knew

  84. about goats all the time.

  85. Not at all.

  86. A goad is a sharp object. It's like a

  87. stick. Okay. And it's used by the

  88. shepherd or the farmer to move an animal

  89. further, to move them forward, to direct

  90. them. Right? The animal's not going. You

  91. hit the animal with the goat. It moves.

  92. All right?

  93. Now, that's not only sharp object in the

  94. verse, though. There's also nails.

  95. And nails firmly fix something in place.

  96. They provide stability and permanence.

  97. So you have these sharp goats and you

  98. have these sharp nails. And what's

  99. happening here is that we're learning

  100. that true wisdom does two things. It

  101. moves us forward and it keeps us

  102. anchored. It moves us forward and it

  103. keeps us anchored.

  104. And that's that's good to know. But

  105. that's not the most important part of

  106. the verse. The most important part of

  107. the verse isn't the goats or the

  108. shepherd.

  109. The most important part of the verse is

  110. the source of the wisdom.

  111. What does it say? All true wisdom comes

  112. from one shepherd.

  113. The wisdom that we've been learning

  114. about from the teacher the whole time.

  115. That wasn't something that the teacher

  116. created. That wasn't the wisdom of the

  117. teacher. It was the wisdom of the one

  118. shepherd.

  119. And what we learn in that and what we're

  120. learning as we you look at that

  121. statement is that this wisdom is coming

  122. from God. Not only that, there's

  123. something even more interesting, more

  124. gives it more depth as we examine it.

  125. This phrase one shepherd is very

  126. important.

  127. Sydney uh Gradanis is a a scholar and

  128. and he notes and he says that there's

  129. only two other times where this phrase

  130. is used. There's only two other times

  131. where this phrase is used in the Old

  132. Testament. This phrase one shepherd uh

  133. it's first used in Ecclesiast um in

  134. Ecclesiastes. It is used in

  135. Ecclesiastes. We just read it. Uh it's

  136. used in Ezekiel. Too many E's. Ezekiel

  137. 34 23 says, "I will place over them one

  138. shepherd, my servant David, and he will

  139. tend them. He will tend them and be

  140. their shepherd." Again, in Ezekiel verse

  141. uh 37:4, it says, "My servant David will

  142. be king over them, and they will all

  143. have one shepherd. They will follow my

  144. laws and be careful to keep my decrees."

  145. The phrase one shepherd isn't just

  146. referring to God. It's referring to a

  147. promised shepherd king that the people

  148. of Israel throughout the Old Testament

  149. wait and longingly wait years and and

  150. and wi with just like this expectation

  151. and for years they're waiting for this

  152. shepherd king. And in John chapter 10,

    John 10 chapter mention

  153. Jesus stands up in front of a crowd and

  154. he declares that he is the true

  155. shepherd.

  156. And Jesus is the fulfillment of

  157. everything that those promises were

  158. pointing to. Jesus is the fulfillment of

  159. everything that those promises

  160. anticipated. He is the shepherd behind

  161. the wisdom. He is the one shepherd

  162. behind the wisdom. All of the wisdom of

  163. Ecclesiastes. And that's where the

  164. tension point comes in. That's where the

  165. tension point comes in.

  166. Jesus is the one shepherd. He's the one

  167. true shepherd and he's speaking through

  168. his wisdom. And that's where the tension

  169. point comes in.

  170. We get together on Tuesdays uh as a

  171. teaching team to go over uh what we're

  172. looking forward to in the series coming

  173. up. We look at uh sermons from the past

  174. week. We look at the uh sermon going

  175. forward and we send our manuscripts to

  176. each other. Uh and so Steve's there and

  177. Charles and and all the teachers there.

  178. And um then we invited the student

  179. ministry guys in Frank Dorenzo, Frank

  180. Roman and Aaron Breer from from

  181. Quakertown and they come in and they

  182. shared with us also this past week they

  183. shared what they're going to be studying

  184. but we give them their our manuscripts

  185. as well. And here's the deal. There are

  186. two people who by far give me the most

  187. feedback on my manuscripts. Actually

  188. like write like book reports on them.

  189. The first is Charles

  190. He wants to go over everything that I

  191. did wrong.

  192. The other one is Frank Roman, uh, who

  193. oversees our middle school students. He

  194. always writes stuff. He's always giving

  195. me feedback and it's really good

  196. feedback. I ignore Charles and I listen

  197. to Frank usually.

  198. But Frank says something. I I take out

  199. my phone when he's talking because I

  200. take notes. And he said something. I

  201. took notes on this. He says this about

  202. the tension in regards to the one

  203. shepherd. He says this. Frank said, "We

  204. like the idea of Jesus as our shepherd."

  205. We do, right? We even have like things

  206. on our nursery walls of of of of a

  207. shepherd, and we we like that picture.

  208. We like the idea. So Frank says, "We

  209. like the idea of Jesus as our shepherd,

  210. but we don't like the idea of us being

  211. sheep.

  212. We want to pursue what we want as

  213. opposed to following Jesus where he

  214. leads us."

  215. It's like, "You should be preaching.

  216. That was really good. And it's such a

  217. He's like he's he looks at me, he goes,

  218. "Lean into that tension. Lean into that

  219. tension." And I I think he's right

  220. because if we look at sheep, sheep

  221. wander. Sheep get lost.

  222. Sheep are vulnerable.

  223. Sheep were never designed to guide

  224. themselves. Never.

  225. Who wants to be a sheep?

  226. But that's what you are. We're all

  227. sheep.

  228. And we try to find meaning, purpose, and

  229. fulfillment by also remaining in charge.

  230. And that's the tension in Ecclesiastes.

  231. The teacher acknowledges is that's

  232. what's going on.

  233. We want the blessings of the shepherd

  234. without surrendering to his leadership.

  235. But the shepherd is speaking.

  236. The shepherd is speaking.

  237. The question is, are we listening?

  238. Are we listening?

  239. The world constantly tells us to trust

  240. ourselves, to define ourselves, to

  241. follow our hearts

  242. wherever our hearts lead us.

  243. The shepherd tells us to follow him.

  244. To follow him.

  245. So the question is whose voice is

  246. shaping your life?

  247. Whose voice are you listening to?

  248. The voice of the shepherd or the voice

  249. of self.

  250. You see, Ecclesiastes reminds us that

  251. there is life, meaning, and wisdom only

  252. when we stop trying to shepherd

  253. ourselves and begin listening to the

  254. shepherd.

  255. And that's so important because if we

  256. lean into that, what we learn is that

  257. there is a life that matters. There's a

  258. life that matters because after all the

  259. searching, all the questioning, and all

  260. the experiments,

  261. the book arrives at its conclusion.

  262. We have read this verse throughout the

  263. series over and over again. We have

  264. continued to read this verse.

  265. We're going to read it again today and

  266. take a deeper look into it.

  267. Ecclesiastes 12:13.

    Ecclesiastes 12:13

  268. Now all has been heard.

  269. Here is the conclusion of the matter.

  270. Fear God and keep his commandments for

  271. this is the duty of all mankind.

  272. First thing that that word duty is is

  273. not it's actually not really a good

  274. translated word for that. It's actually

  275. not really a job we have. It's actually

  276. our very essence.

  277. This is the essence of being human.

  278. This is the destination of the entire

  279. book. This is the destination. The

  280. teacher has examined life from every

  281. angle and the conclusion is remarkably

  282. simple.

  283. Fear God and keep his commandments. Fear

  284. God and keep his commandments.

  285. And to fear God doesn't mean to live in

  286. terror of him. It means recognizing who

  287. he is and responding appropriately.

  288. It is reverence. It is awe. It is

  289. worship.

  290. It is trust.

  291. It is joyful submission to the God who

  292. made us.

  293. There's an old hymn that kind of

  294. captures

  295. the essence of the verse we just read in

  296. Ecclesiastes chapter 12. It captures the

    Ecclesiastes 12 chapter mention

  297. essence of what it means to fear God and

  298. keep his commandments.

  299. Listen to the I'm not going to sing it.

  300. Nobody wants to hear that.

  301. Listen to the words from this hymn.

  302. When we walk with the Lord in the light

  303. of his word,

  304. what a glory he sheds on our way.

  305. While we do his good will, he abides

  306. with us still and with all who will

  307. trust and obey.

  308. Trust and obey, for there's no other way

  309. to be happy in Jesus but to trust and

  310. obey.

  311. Fear God and keep his commandments.

  312. Trust and obey. Trust and obey.

  313. The key is we The God we fear is the God

  314. who loved us so much. The God we fear is

  315. the God who gave himself for us.

  316. And that changes the nature of

  317. obedience. We do not obey in order to

  318. earn acceptance.

  319. We obey because we have already been

  320. accepted through Jesus.

  321. We are not loved because we obey. We

  322. obey because we are loved.

  323. There still seems to be a struggle to do

  324. that, right?

  325. At least for me, there's a struggle to

  326. do that. There's a struggle to trust and

  327. obey.

  328. Why? Why is that internal struggle still

  329. something that we we just deal with

  330. every day of our lives?

  331. It's because obedience is ultimately a

  332. worship issue.

  333. It's a love issue.

  334. The we reason we wander from God is

  335. because we keep falling in love with

  336. rival shepherds,

  337. good shepherds,

  338. good things that God has placed in our

  339. life. family,

  340. comfort,

  341. provision.

  342. We chase after these shepherds,

  343. these rival shepherds and and and what

  344. ends up happening is that success

  345. becomes our shepherd and comfort becomes

  346. our shepherd. Money becomes our

  347. shepherd, approval becomes our shepherd,

  348. productivity becomes our shepherd.

  349. You see, the issue is not whether we

  350. worship or not. The issue is who we are

  351. worshiping.

  352. The issue is who we will follow.

  353. Which shepherd are we listening to? The

  354. one true shepherd is speaking. Which

  355. voice are we listening to?

  356. And if I were to ask myself, what is it

  357. that I cling to to give my life meaning?

  358. If I really were to ask myself, if I say

  359. just just pause for a second, stop

  360. listening to me, and just think, what is

  361. it that gives your life meaning?

  362. What is it?

  363. The answer may reveal the shepherd

  364. you're actually following.

  365. You see, the question is not no longer

  366. merely what do I do.

  367. The question is whom do I love?

  368. Whom do I put first? Whom am I

  369. following?

  370. Because whatever captures your heart

  371. will ultimately direct your life. And

  372. the life that matters is the life lived

  373. in reverent love, in joyful love, in

  374. obedient love, in joyful obedience to

  375. the shepherd, the one true shepherd.

  376. We have to understand that has to be our

  377. response. Not a response of obedience

  378. out of guilt, not of a response of

  379. obedience trying to earn acceptance, but

  380. a response of obedience out of gratitude

  381. and joy, knowing that we are loved by

  382. the true shepherd.

  383. And this is the life we are called to be

  384. to live. We are called to trust and

  385. obey, to fear God and obey his

  386. commandments

  387. because because because

  388. one day

  389. there's a judgment that will come.

  390. One day there's a judgment that will

  391. come.

  392. The book ends with that final reminder

  393. in verse 14.

  394. For God will bring every deed into

  395. judgment, including every hidden thing,

  396. whether it is whether it is good or

  397. evil.

  398. This is the last verse of the entire

  399. book of Ecclesiastes.

  400. And it's not there by accident.

  401. The entire book has been moving to this

  402. reality

  403. because if there's no final judgment,

  404. if there is no final judgment, then evil

  405. ultimately wins.

  406. Justice never arrives.

  407. Hidden wrongs remain hidden forever. The

  408. oppressed never receive vindication. The

  409. wicked escape accountability.

  410. And the longing for justice that lives

  411. in every human heart is nothing more

  412. than illusion.

  413. If that final judgment never comes, then

  414. everything is meaningless.

  415. Then everything that the teacher

  416. vocalized

  417. in despair throughout the book is true.

  418. But Ecclesiastes refuses to leave us in

  419. that moment.

  420. And it ends by saying there is a judge.

  421. There is a judge. And every act matters.

  422. Every choice matters. Every sacrifice

  423. matters. Every injustice matters. Every

  424. hidden thing matters.

  425. And what we need to understand is this.

  426. Biblical judgment is so much more than

  427. individual accountability.

  428. It's so much more than individual

  429. accountabilility.

  430. It is cosmic restoration.

  431. It is cosmic restoration. Judgment is

  432. God setting things right. He's restoring

  433. things to the way that they were

  434. supposed to be.

  435. Everything that sin has broken will one

  436. day be addressed. Everything crooked

  437. will one day be made straight.

  438. Everything hidden will one day be

  439. revealed.

  440. And in John chapter 5, it tells us that

    John 5 chapter mention

  441. Jesus is the judge.

  442. The shepherd is the judge.

  443. And so, while yes, this ultimate

  444. judgment creates a warning, it also

  445. creates a promise.

  446. It creates a promise.

  447. The warning is that every person

  448. throughout human history,

  449. you, myself, every single human will

  450. stand before the judge one day.

  451. Every single person will stand before

  452. him.

  453. But there's also hope

  454. because the judge

  455. already stood in the place of his

  456. people.

  457. The judge already stood in the place of

  458. his people. The shepherd became the

  459. lamb.

  460. The shepherd became the lamb and he bore

  461. our judgment.

  462. The comfort of the gospel is not that

  463. judgment disappears.

  464. The comfort of the gospel is that

  465. judgment has already fallen on Jesus.

  466. At the cross, justice was not ignored.

  467. It was satisfied.

  468. And so for those outside of Jesus,

  469. judgment remains a warning.

  470. For those in Jesus, judgment becomes a

  471. promise.

  472. A promise that the shepherd judge, the

  473. shepherd king, the one true shepherd

  474. will make things right.

  475. This is the whole point of Ecclesiastes.

  476. Ecclesiastes is is interesting. It

  477. starts off in Ecclesiastes chapter 1

    Ecclesiastes 1:2

  478. verse 2. It says this, "Maningless,

  479. meaningless, says the teacher. Utterly

  480. meaningless. Everything is meaningless."

  481. In Ecclesiastes 12:8, it says, "Meaning,

    Ecclesiastes 12:8

  482. meaning meaningless, meaningless, says

  483. the teacher. Everything is meaningless."

  484. Those seem to be the bookends of this

  485. entire book.

  486. But then there's an epilogue.

  487. But then there's an epilogue

  488. and it says, "Now all has been heard.

  489. Here is the conclusion of the matter.

  490. Fear God and keep his commandments. For

  491. this is the duty of all mankind.

  492. How do we get to there? How do we move

  493. from meaningless to there? What has

  494. changed?

  495. What's changed in the epilogue is that

  496. we are lifted from life under the sun to

  497. life before God.

  498. The answer to meaningless is not better

  499. circumstances.

  500. The answer is not more success.

  501. The answer is not more pleasure.

  502. The answer is not more control.

  503. The answer

  504. is Jesus.

  505. The answer to all of Ecclesiastes is

  506. Jesus.

  507. The answer to life under the sun is the

  508. shepherd over the sun.

  509. The answer to the question of is there

  510. more is yes.

  511. Yes,

  512. there is a shepherd who speaks. There is

  513. a life that matters. There is a judgment

  514. that will make everything right and his

  515. name is Jesus.

  516. So the final question of Ecclesiastes is

  517. not is there more.

  518. The greater question is will you

  519. continue to try to shepherd yourself

  520. or will you finally trust the one true

  521. shepherd? Let's pray. Lord, we thank you

  522. for your love. We thank you for

  523. reminders of who you are.

  524. The true shepherd, the final judge,

  525. the one who is victorious over

  526. everything.

  527. God, I struggle

  528. often with letting you be the shepherd

  529. of my life.

  530. Even today, my heart has wrestled and

  531. and been filled with just anxious

  532. thoughts or or just just different

  533. things because I want to be in control.

  534. Even today, as I'm supposed to teach

  535. this message, I struggle with it.

  536. I thank you for reminders, not just from

  537. your word, but even from the

  538. music and worship that we sang together.

  539. I ask you that these will not be empty

  540. words

  541. that we read or learned about or empty

  542. words that we sang today,

  543. but that they would stir our hearts,

  544. that they would stir my heart

  545. to be filled with

  546. just reverence and joy,

  547. boldness and obedience

  548. and the peace that comes from that.

  549. We love you so much.

  550. Pray this in Jesus name. Amen.
