3rd March 2024 - Communion Service - Dave Food - Walk this Way

You bless every child we're connected with, let them grow in you. We

pray in Jesus' name. Amen. Anybody excited this morning? I'm excited,

and I'm excited because stuff's going on. Cherry And said that anybody had a

difficult week, and a few hands went up. But you know, there's

been some great stuff that's gone on this week, and I'm going to kind

of I just want to call something out right now. I know the children

have gone out, and actually no, I'll save it until they come back

because I want to celebrate with them too. So we start a new series

as we press into March. Walk this way. Have you ever had somebody

greet you somewhere. Maybe you've been to an office somewhere and you're met in

reception and you go and check in and you sit down and you're waiting for

somebody to come. And somebody comes down and they say walk this way,

and they welcome you, and they say, come on, joints, we're

going to do something. There's a sense of expectation number one, because something's

going on. You've gone somewhere with a purpose and then someone comes and meets

you and they say, okay, we're going to do this together, whatever

that is. It might be having a cup of coffee, it might be

having a meeting, might be doing presentation. But walk this way please.

This is not the Ministry of City Walks. For anybody who remembers the Ministry

of City Walks and John Clee's you know he's it was part of Monty Python

shows you how old I am. For anybody who remember, anybody remember Monty

Python. Just a few hands waving at the boat there, Monty Python.

John Clees he did with the Ministry of City Walks and won't do it.

But he is tall and he's got really long legs. And then he would

walk around in this silly walk and say walk this way. That's not talking

about this morning. I'm not saying copy me me with the funny walk that

I've got. Because each of us walks differently. Some of us walk tentatively,

some of us walk confidently. And I'm going to call a few things

out because I think there's stuff going on. So I actually sense that I'm

being a little prophetic as I share the word this morning, a group of

us really actually us. I mean I came and supported, but you know,

the group went out on the high Street yesterday. You know, the

weather was pretty yucky, wasn't it. And we didn't have a gazebo with

wolves. And I really wouldn't have been surprised if some people have said,

Dave, do you mind if we stay at home today? It's a bit

cold and a bit wet. But the team were there sharing on the street.

Now here's the thing, Joel and Hope. They're in Sunday school right

now. I thought that they had a bowl of chocolates and I told Joel

this this morning. I went up to him and said, you can do

things I cannot do. I said, you could walk up to a child

in the high street with a bowl of chocklras and say would you like a

chocolate? Maybe looking at Mum or Dad and saying is this okay? I

said if I walked up to a child in the high street with a bowl

of chocolates and said would you like a chocolate? That there might be a

bit of oh who are you? But you can do what I can't do.

Now here's the thing. Is a young man, but he has a

boldness in the company. I saw him walking up to the high street and

walking up with a great deal of confidence, not expecting to be rejected,

not expecting to even have a question to saying would you like a chocolate?

And Hope told me she walked up to one child who was in the pushchair,

was really stressed, and she walked up and checked with a parent and

held out the bowl of chocolates. And this child went from a raging,

roaring situation too chocolate. And then Hope said, would you like a second?

One tech with mom said can have a second. And this has been

carried forward to today. So some people got welcomed by Joel outside. There's

something upon that young man that he's doing something now, he's leaving us in

giving giving us example because he said he was outside in his coat and I

was thinking, okay, is it okay? Well, he's pretty, he's

pretty wise. He's not going to run in the road. He's not that

he's not going to play with the football and running the and that kind of

thing. He was walking. I said, Joel, what are you doing?

He said, I'm welcoming people. I went okay, and he was.

Some of you got greeted by Joel as he welcomed you into church with

a smile. I said, I said, you're doing something else, aren't

you? And he said, yes, I'm counting. He said, I'm

counting how many people are coming to church. I thought, wow, And

so I'm encouraged that there are people who are doing things and God's synchronizing what's

going on. And just to give you a couple of let's get into some

scripture. First of all, one, John chapter two, verses five and

six says this says this, but whoever keeps his words truly the love of

God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in him.

He who says he abides in him brought himself also to walk just as

he walked. There's a couple of things that I can call just I'm just

going to call out a couple of things. There's many, many more.

But ge Jesus walked in particular ways. Jesus went to people that other people

wouldn't go to. He would walk across the room, he would cross the

road to deliberately have a conversation with somebody, and other people go, oh,

they're a bit noisy, they're a bit loud, they're a bit different.

Now, just let me paint a picture. Just imagine somebody walking down

the road got green spiky hair, not that I've got anything against people with

green spiky hair. Maybe they've got a few bits of metal in their heads

as well, you know. And then maybe they've got the headphones on and

they're bopping along the road or whatever. I'd probably just walk by. But

I'm pretty sure Jesus wouldn't have done. He'd probably walked up and said,

hey, what are you're listening to, and he started a conversation. He

would have engaged with someone. But you know, it's so easy to walk

by on the other side of the road. The Good Samaritan story. There

are stories of the Good Samaritans, you know, the guy who got beaten

up the Good Samaritans. Before we get to the story of the Good Samaritans,

other people walk past on the other side of the road. Too difficult,

too hard. Let me give you a different scenario. Let me ask

you to imagine you're sitting at a party. You've gone to a business meeting,

and there's all people sitting around the corners, you know, the kind

of thing. You go to a hall and there's chairs around the edge.

It's been prepared and there maybe there's some tables of food being prepared and everybody's

sitting around the edge of the hall. It takes courage to get up and

walk across that hole, walk across that big space to the other side of

the room. So what we do is this really British thing. We acknowledge

one another from a distance. When we catch eyes, we go oh,

or do a little wave, you know, and that's our communication. Twenty

yards apart. We're going hi. And I'm thinking sometimes I do that.

So but I'm thinking, why don't I just get up and walk across the

room? Why is this room so scary? Why is this big space in

the middle so scary? Because it's almost like there's a river running down the

middle of the room, and we go, I can't cross that. I

can't cross that room. But I just sens Jesus would say walk this way,

and he would cross the room and he'd go and talk to someone.

And now I do this on Sunday. If I've ever offended you because of

this, I want to be really honest with you and say sorry. But

that's the way it is. If I'm standing here talking to you, someone

who I see every Sunday or most Sundays, I'm standing talking to you and

there's a guest, or there's someone who's just come in who's looking a bit

lost. To be honest, I'll go excuse me, and I'll go and

talk to them, not because I don't want to talk to you, but

in that moment, their need is far more important than yours. And I

want to encourage us all in that. Let's keep our eyes open to the

people around who feeling a little lost, feeling a little awkward, Clem said

on Thursday night. He said, one of the things that's true is that

people have often I don't know whether it's exactly seven minutes, but people have

decided in seven minutes whether they're going to return to church or to a meeting

or to a gathering. And seven minutes doesn't start when the worship starts,

doesn't start when the preaching starts. It probably starts at the front door.

It might even start out in the road whilst they're parking, if it's difficult

to park. And I have seen I have been to churches where it's difficult

to park. I dropped Clem off yesterday in Wembley and there's a football match

going on today, and the pastor of the church in Wembley said, we

have to get special permits to allow us to park because you're not allowed to

park on the streets in Wembley when there's a football match going up. I

thought, wow, imagine saying if I said to all of you guys,

okay, you're not going to be able to park anywhere in the car park

because the car park's going to be full for a football match. Some people

say, oh, it's a bit of a long walk from the other car

park. I'll watch online. We facilitate that. But do you know what

getting together is important? And so Jesus will cross the room. Jesus would

walk across the room. Why is this such a big challenge? In Galatians,

chapter five, verse sixteen, it says this, my counsel, is

this live freely, animated and motivated by God's spirit. Then you won't feed

the compulsions of selfishness. My advice to you is what to be motivated by

the Holy Spirit. To be motivated by what the Holy Spirit would do and

say, if you don't know what to do when you're sitting there looking across

that room, if you don't know what to do when you're sitting on walking

by on the other side, of the road. Just allow the Holy Spirit

to nudge you. He might say, carry on walking. Okay, he's

got another job for me to do today. He might say, why didn't

you cross over and just see what happens summer. I don't know whether you

remember about three or four weeks ago you were we're talking about making room and

welcoming people and actually, let me encourage you. I had talking to a

few people after the meeting on Thursday night with Clem and one of the things

that a couple of visitors said was, I've never been welcomed so much in

the church. He said, loads of people come and talk to me.

Good. We're doing a not a bad job, guys. We're doing a

good job, you know, and we're connecting with people. And so I

noticed as I looked out the window before church about ten to eleven, there

was a car pulled up outside and the bonnet was open. Now, I

am not a mechanic. I wouldn't need the bonnet when I got a funny

noise coming from a car, I would literally speak to someone and say,

can you come and help me? But he had his bonnet up and he

was and he had some bottles of water and I thought, okay, I

know what bottles of water are about. There's a radiator in a car,

and often when you need to put you know, if you're putting water into

it under a bonnet, there's something going wrong with the radiator. So I

went across to him and I said to him, So, noticed you're doing

something under your bonnet. And then I noticed there was a taxi badge on

his car. And he filled emptied both of his bottles of water, and

he looked into a bit awkward. I said, so can I help you?

Maybe we could fill your bottles of water up. He said, oh,

yes, please, And someone was just going out, and so I

said, Simon, can you go and talk to him, because I guessed

he was a Muslim. And so someone was chatting to him, and I

got bottles of water, got more bottles, but he gave me some more

bottles, said can you fill me out more? That's a scriptural principle,

you know, if you ask for more now, you get more. So

he was asking me for more. He said, can you fill up all

my bottles? And I went yes. I said, there's probably a problem

with your radiator, isn't He said yes, he said, and I won't

get home if I don't have enough water. Now I do not know how

we touched him, but some had a conversation with him. We gave him

some water, and on he went. I crossed the road. I could

quite easily have just ignored it and thought, I don't know anything about carts.

If you do not know spiritually what goes on in that conversation, you

don't know what seeds are being sown. You don't know what someone's going to

do or say. In Ephesians chapter five, it begins this, and I'm

going to dwell a bit in Ephesians. But Ephesians chapter five, verses one

and two says this, therefore, be imitatus of God has beloved children and

war in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us,

a fragrant offering and a sacrifice to God. Be imitators. Jee if you

don't know what to do, imitate. Imitate is a strong form of flattery.

There are many times when I've watched children. I've taught many children.

I've watched them copying an adult doing something. The adult is not saying,

do it this way. They're just watching, And there's some lovely videos on

YouTube. I didn't want to play them because I'd have probably triggered copyright issues

and those kinds of things. But some lovely videos on YouTube where a dad's

turning a spanner and using a hammer and there's a little child next to him

with the plastic hammer and the plastic spanner and just copying his dad. Don't

know what to do. It's nothing better than to imitate Christ. Nothing better.

Christ is full of love, Christ is full of purpose. Christ can

God to our world. So let's read on in that scripture. Then,

as we get now to Ephesians chapter five, verse thirteen and fourteen. But

because what do we see? What do we show? But all things that

are exposed and made manifest by the light. For whatever makes manifest is light.

Therefore he says, awake, you who sleep, arise from the dead,

and Christ will give you lights. One of the things we did yesterday,

one of the things church did yesterday, We were out on the high

street declaring who Christ was, proclaiming who Christ was. You know, and

I'll be honest with you, there were people who are very receptive. There

was a few people who went and off they went. There was a few

people who are even offended scripture. Scripture says the gospel will offend because sometimes

it scratches where we hurt rather than where we itch. So it's not all

that's nice, it's I don't like like that. Do you know what?

Sometimes truth hurts. Sometimes truth means we have to change the way we walk,

the way we think, what we do. And so I'm really proud

that we as a church got out there and shared in the light who we

are. Did we do it perfectly? No, it doesn't matter. We're

going to learn some lessons. We're going to do some things differently. Do

you know what? In the season of preparing and making room God is providing?

Has anybody noticed that, you know, there's more and more people in

the band. You know, since the beginning of the year, we've talked

about making room now and Matt, who used to live with us, he

lent us the bass guitar, he lends us the bass guitar and said,

and you might even remember this. At the beginning of last month, the

beginning of February, we put up a prayer request. God told me very

clear, said, Dave, you've not been specific enough with what you're requesting.

I was putting general prayer requests this month, let's pray about these things.

So the beginning of February I put four things. Does anybody remember the

four prayer points. Let's see if we remember any of them. Keyboard,

Yeah, a keyboard and that I think it was. The week later Keerris's

mum turned up with a keyboard because she was leading worship. She's lent it

to us for a period of time and so Carris can play the keyboard on

Sunday. Okay, anybody remember anything else? Graphic designer, Yeah, absolutely,

a graphic designer, and that Sunday Colleen was in church. Who's been

just Colleen and Brett just joined us relatively recently. She came out and said

I can do design. She designed the lethlet for the meeting that Clem came

to. Anybody remember the other two? A student leader and we haven't seen

that one answered yet. But the other thing was strategy around outreach. Yesterday

we were out on the high Street doing outreach, doing stuff. So I'm

thinking, Okay, God, I'm going to get more specific, because he's

able to do immeasurably more than we ask or imagine, immeasurably more than we

ask or imagine. But here's the thing. Okay, So more instruments drives

Jonathan mad in a nice way because he's going, Dave, where do I

plug these things in? Because we've only got so much infrastructure in our wires

now, and he's been doing crazy things like putting a microphone in front of

a speaker to be able to get the sounds coming out and going. And

so we said, okay, what else do we need now? We remember,

we're building with growth in mind, so anything we buy now has to

not only work in this room, it has to work somewhere else as well.

Otherwise it's a waste of money. So whatever we buy now needs to

be something for the future. So you might notice as a new speaker in

the room, Okay, we could not put a bass guitar through these speakers.

It wouldn't work. It might blow them up. So Jonathan, when

did we start talking? We started talking them in theory a few weeks ago

about it. But God gave some money, specifically, it was given for

the worship kit. That kit was ordered on Tuesday. Jonathan, I agreed,

but it was it arrived on Thursday. Was youth on Thursday, And

we've got more places we can plug stuff in, and I believe the band

will grow to the extent where there will be a band right across the front

of the room. And that's not about this place now, that's about growth.

That's about the opportunity. That's about what's coming. And I already know

of musicians who are in the room who wants to play, but we haven't

got room for them yet. Just going to work out how to make it

happen. So it's a lovely growth problem. It's a lovely growth problem.

But God opened the door. Now this week we started this week and Debbie

started a new job on Monday, who praise God. You know, we

had the meeting with Claim, we had outreach on Saturday. Julia rings me

or sends me a message. She came down here on Monday. She said,

the fence has blown down and more of it's blown down. The fence

on the end of the building blown down. It didn't damage any cars.

That's a miracle in itself, if I'm really honest with you. Panels in

the road. There was more that need to be chopped up, and I'm

thinking, oh, I really need this this week. Another thing. So

anyway, we chopped them up and moved them out the way so they weren't

going to cause any more damage than I rang someone I knew who said,

I Dave, I can come and look at it tomorrow. And I was

really clear that when I looked at the shed. There's a shed just behind

the building there with a tiny little padlock on it. It's only got a

gardening influence in it, but it was wide open to the world. Do

you know what where my head went. Someone's going to break into this.

That's where my head went. The whole of the building's exposed out because they

can all see the back of the building. And I was just thinking,

God, I was struggling to sleep on Monday night, and I just said

to God, you're going to have to be our burglar alarm. You're going

to have to be our security guard tonight. Lord, I'm just giving it

over to you. And I then messaged the guy in the morning and said,

look, okay, when you come and look at our fans, is

there any possibility that you can maybe nail a couple of the old panels up

in some way just to close that area off temporarily. I don't get a

picture. Later on Tuesday, afternoon. Fence all sorted and it's just going

to charge us materials and I go, God, how do you do this?

Now? I don't even understand how it happened. Really, it just

happened. And thankful to the guys Dwayne and the guys who did the fencing.

You know, they did a great job. And it will be good

for a few more years. It's a long term, temporary fix. It's

not you know, it will ultimately need to be dug up. Anyway,

The point I'm making is started off the week and yeah in the Tuesday,

yes, yes, so please if you think life at the moment's a bit

boring, get on the roller coaster with God. There will be some moments

when he takes us to a great high place and we go yes, and

then the enemy will want to come and test us. For anybody who's ever

been on a roller coaster, you get in your seat and you're buckled in,

ready, ready for life. And I want to give you some safety

things. Number one, make sure that you've eaten something before you get on

the roller coaster of life. Number two, make sure that you're buckled in

with all the armor of God. Make sure you've got the sword of the

Spirit, and the shield of faith, and the helmet of salvation, and

the belt of truth, and the breastplate of righteousness, and the feet shelt

with the readiness of the Gospel of Peace. Make sure they're on as we

step into life with God, and then we'll start to chug into the day.

And I don't just imagine you're on a roller coaster and you're there with

a few other people. It's not lots of people, but you're there with

a few other people, and you get higher and higher, and you're think,

you know what's going to happen. And roller coasters is designed like this

in the sense that there's a moment of silence. Theyre always designed like this.

Next time you go on one, look out for this moment you get

to the top. There's always designed a moment of silence where you're meant to

go. As off you go. I think there's a moment of expectation with

God. And God allows us to go to a place where we go with

him and he says, you're ready for what's coming next. And sometimes we

want to do exactly like some people do on the road not now ah.

But other times we just sit there and say God, I'm in this ride

with you. I've got faith that you're going to do immeasurably more than I

ask or imagine, And so I'm going to just trust you with my safety,

my security, and just see what comes out of this ride with you.

Moving on. In Ephesians reading now in verse fifteen and to seventeen,

it says this, look carefully, then, how you walk not as unwise,

but as wise making the best use of the time, because the days

are evil. Therefore, do not be foolish, but understand what the will

of the Lord is. Walk wisely, check things out. If you're doing

something for the first time, maybe you just want to consult with somebody who's

done it before you consult with God, ask him to just say, am

I on the right path to day? Am I walking the right way?

Have I got the right kit with me? Is this the right thing for

me to do? Making the best use of your time? Now? Sometimes

there are we can do good things if we get the time wrong. If

I if I remember, I'm not going to Julius the gardener in our house,

but I know that if I plant seeds at the wrong time of year,

there's going to be nothing that happens here. If you plant seeds for

a plant that needs to be seeds that need to be planted in the spring,

and you plant them in the middle of winter, they might have rotted

by the time they should be sprouting up. And although I've done a good

thing, I've planted seed, it's not going to bear fruit. So there's

a right time in the right season. There's the right time for doing.

And if we're not sure about it, check with someone else who knows.

Check with God. Say Lord, do I wait? I think I've told

some of yous before. Now. I once a few years ago, now,

actually probably nearly a decade ago. Now, I felt God say,

go into Egham High Street, and so I stopped what I was doing.

I was working at home that day, and I went down to Egham High

Street and I walked up and down the high street a few times. I

got myself a coffee and didn't feel anything clear about stopping to talk to it,

and didn't feel any anything at all. So I went home again,

really a little disappointed, and I sat down and I said, what was

that all about? Then he said, Dave, you were in such a

hurry to get on what i'd actually said, was I want you to go

down Egham tomorrow. But here's the interesting thing. We can all immediately go,

well, what that was wasted? But let me tell you the story.

So I went faithfully down to Egham before I was just about to go

in the coffee shop and get a coffee, and somebody came up to me

and said, Dave, somebody I hadn't seen, probably for about ten twelve

years, and got talking. He said, I saw you here yesterday,

but I was talking to someone I couldn't grab your attention. He said,

but i've seen you here today. Can we have a coffee? And we

ented to cost a coffee and had a conversation, And that was exactly That

was exactly the reason why. Now I'm sure he would have seen me on

the second day only if i'd gone on the second day only, But he

saw me on the first day. So even God used that. So please

do not think it's about getting it perfectly right. God wants to use our

availability as well as our ability. God wants to use what we're willing to

share with him, what we're willing to give to him Ephesians five twenty.

Here's an attitude that we should have at all times. I think it's a

good attitude to have, giving thanks sometimes for some things. Know, is

that not what it says? No, giving thanks always for all things boring

we've talked about. It's a bit on small group havingly this particular well maybe

not this scripture, but this principle giving thanks all times, even when we

don't feel like giving thanks sometimes, even when there are things that we think

do I have to be thankful for this, Be thankful to God the Father

in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. And I'm thankful. I'm thankful

that the weather was a little rough yesterday, because that's what I'm reading here,

So I mean it got better throughout the day. The sun shone brighter.

You know, there will be people who saw those who were out on

the street yesterday who just walked by. They've registered, they took no and

there'll be people who gave you a I'm too busy right now thanks by when

we're there next time, they'll have time. They'll have a conversation, I'm

absolutely sure of. One of our neighbors was walking past and I got talking

to them. Juliette and I talked to her for a few moments, and

I am sure I'm going to have to have a follow up conversation with her

because of the conversation that happened there, seeds were so and sometimes there are

things that we can't do with family and friends and neighbors that with a friend

alongside, Juliette was a little more bold. You know, I'm being the

nice neighbor. I don't want to don't want to offend. Juliette comes in

the you know, she asked a couple of things. But those questions have

been asked. Now that they're out there, I'm expecting my neighbor to turn

around and say, Dave, tell me a bit more about that. I

just believe. I believe that we need to walk this way. We need

to walk across the road from time to time, we need to walk across

the room, we need to walk across town. Sometimes when the Holy Spirit

says, go and knock on this person's door, you know, I once

I went to see somebody once and I had to drive to get to the

house, but I really felt I should go and see them. I went

and knocked on their door, no response, and I thought they were in

but I drove away, same person. I went. A few days later,

I went and knocked on the door again. I thought they were in.

No answer, came away. Third time I went, the curtains twitched

upstairs. They were definitely in, but they weren't answering the door. Do

you know what, there was no evidence of the fact that i'd been.

One of the little things that I learned, which i'd encourage you to do,

is stick a note through the door, because it's really because it's really

easy for the enemy to get in and go see no one cares. Now,

I don't know whether they were in every time I visited or not.

I knew they were in once I got into a habit of just putting a

business card or something a bit of paper through the door, saying Hi,

just pop round, hope you're okay, because otherwise people just don't know.

And it's not that I want a badge saying I'm a good visitor, that's

not the point. I just want to I want to minimize the opportunity for

misunderstanding, confusion, and those kind of things. And so I'm going to

end with this scripture as we start heading towards taking communion now, because we're

going to take communion together. For those at home, We're going to take

communion together in a few moments as we step back into worship. In Galatians

five, verse sixteen, it says this, I say, then walk in

the spirit, and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh. What

we want to do with our body. It's so easy to respond to what

our body wants to do. It's more comfortable, easier. Sometimes the spirit

says, walk a different way, cross the road, have a conversation,

join in, press in, so let me pray. And even as even

as our eyes are closed, and those who are home as well, I

just want to say, I want to encourage you open your eyes this week.

Open your eyes and just see those who are God draws your attention to

see who your heart strings are tugged by. See what conversation you're drawn into

a sense that God's releasing boldness in his church in this time, a sense

God's releasing boldness upon us. And I just think Joel as an example.

It's just it's just an example of that. I saw boldness yesterday on the

high street and I'm just thinking, yes, Lord, you're at work,

and I want to before I do anything else, I just want to say,

if there's an area of your life where right now you need boldness.

Might be about asking for a pay rise. It might be asking for you

want to adjust your job situation or as something that needs to change. It

might be about talking to family about something. If you need boldness right now,

I'm going to pray for boldness, So would you stand where you are?

This is not about crossing over. This is just literally about boldness.

I sense God's going to impart boldness today, since God's going to impart boldness

in situations and circumstances. So if that's one of the things you say,

Lord, I need some more boldness, I'm standing. I knowed I need

some boldness in some areas that I need to just bring before God. So,

Lord, we stand in your presence, those home, those listening later,

those in the room. Lord, we stand in your presence. Lord,

we say we acknowledge we need a greater boldness. Lord, And let

it not be self confidence. Let it be confidence in you, Lord God.

Let it be confidence in the words that you will give us to say.

Let it be confidence in our body language. Lord, guard that instead

of awkwardly walk into a situation. Lord, you will cause us to walk

in with confidence and with boldness. We pray in your mighty name, Father,

give us wisdom, highlight the things you want us to pay attention to,

help us to ignore the things that would distract us, and help us

to walk by faith, that prayers would be answered, that lies would be

touched, that bodies would be healed. Father, let us be bold with

you too. Father, help us to walk with confidence into the throne room

of heaven to petition you for circumstances and situations. Lord, you're our loving

father, and you have good things for us. And Lord, do you

want to release gifts through us and see fruit come? And so, Father,

we pray for every seed that was sown yesterday, every conversation that happened

yesterday, every piece of outreach that happened yesterday. Father, we pray those

seeds will be pressed down and take root. Lord, we pray as they

take root, they bear fruit. And as they bear fruit, Lord,
