Dream Big

Last week was our last week on the Ten Commandment series. You might have

noticed that we only did nine out of ten commandments. And Andrew and I

are fine with that. Students most institutions. Nine out of ten, it's

a great grade. Uh, it's okay, we didn't do uh thou shalt

not covet your neighbor's wife. And so I'll just wrap that up. Don't

do that. It's not good. Be content with what the Lord has given

you, Okay. And so anyways, so we're done with the Ten Commandments

now. And uh so we got a couple of weeks where we're just gonna

kind of do some one off and today I wanted to focus on your future.

And but the message for you is good for all of us today.

Also here in a couple of weeks, we will be starting our summer series,

and this summer we're gonna do the Book of Revelation. And Andrew and

I have never taught out of the Book of Revelation, and we're excited to

do that. We're calling this series attempting to demystify Revelation because it really is

an attempt on our behalf. But we will be having some guest speakers like

Jim Lyon and some others will be coming in this summer to help us out

with that series, so we look forward to that. Anyways, Well,

let's go ahead and dive into God's word. And before we do that,

let us pray and prepare our souls. God, we just thank you.

It's already been a celebratory morning, and we just thank you for these seniors,

and we just thank you for the opportunity to be challenged by you each

and every single week. By your word, God, I pray for every

single one of us in this room today. Let us open our heart and

allow you and your word to penetrate our heart and challenge us. In Jesus

name, we pray Amen. How many of you in here have ever filled

out a bucket list? Raise your hand, A few of you, A

few of you. I love bucket lists. If you don't know what a

bucket list is, it's a list of things that you want to accomplish before

you kick the bucket or before you die. And essentially, it's a list

of things that you want to accomplish or experience in your life. And for

those of you who have a hard time figuring out, maybe you know what

that would be for you. There's actually websites you go on and there's websites

that will give you ideas for things to experience, and they will also allow

you to put up your own list and you could check them off as you

go. And again, these lists are very helpful. They give you some

ideas like, for instance, bungee jumping, skydiving. You can learn a

new language right now. That's a real popular thing to do. You could

jump into a pool fully closed. I had a friend who did that.

He said it was not as cool as it sounded. One of them is

throw a dart on a map and wherever it lands, that's where you go.

In VA case, I thought about doing that, but I thought,

man, my luck, I'll end up in Baltimore. And so maybe a

gondola ride Venice, Italy, I don't know. In my mid twenties,

early to mid twenties, I came up a bucket list and I've been working

off that bucket list for twenty years now, and it has directed an awful

lot of my free time. It's directed my vacations, it's directed my weeks

off because I have these things in my life that I want to check off.

And there's a few things on my bucket list that's been on there for

years that I still haven't checked off. One of them is I've always wanted

to catch a ten pound bass, and so each time I go to Florida,

almost every single time, I will call a guide up, pay a

lot of money, and catch bass. But I still haven't caught a ten

pound bass. Now, for years, close to twenty years, I had

a ten point buck on my list, and every year I would not get

a ten point buck. But then two years ago, one guy finally decided

to volunteer for service. And so I'm gonna give you guys a warning right

now. If you do not like taxidermy, do this. Don't come to

me later upset. Okay, do this. Go ahead and put this guy

off, because let me tell you what I felt like I should honor him,

and I made him into a beautiful piece of art. And so now

you can go ahead and take that down, and those of you who don't

like taxidermy, you can breathe again. And so then the next year I

put on my list a twelve pointer and guess what a twelve pointer volunteered is

self for service this past fall and so I am just excited. I don't

know, I gotta now, I gotta come up with something bigger for my

hunting. And so anyways, I love being directed by my list. And

so you know, for years, I worked my way through AFI's top one

hundred movies list. So that way I watched movies with intentionality that took a

few year years to get through. And also I've been to France, I've

been to Australia, and after about fifteen years on my list, I finally

got to see the Rolling Stones in concert. And let me tell you,

if you see Mick Jagger very very tight pants dancing, it's not as exciting

as you thought it would be. It's really weird and he just moves in

weird ways. And it wasn't as cool as I thought it would be.

You know, I've continued to work my way through that list over the years.

It's got to see Eric Clapton, who hears seeing Bob Dylan. I

got to see Bob Dylan. I think that we should only be charged per

word we understand from that concert. I got to see Roger Walters from Pink

Floyd and I got to see last year or two years ago, I row

Off, I got to see Robert Plant from led Zeppelin, and then of

course Taylor Swift. I'm sorry, that's Andrew Miller's list. Sorry about that.

The main idea of a bucket list is that you're intentional abot accomplishing some

things. Now here's the first feeling today is simply this. Most people regret

the things that we haven't done. Okay, when it comes to life,

most people regret the things that they haven't done. And we call those missed

opportunities. And have you ever asked yourself, had you gotten older? I

wanted you know, what if I would have taken that job, What if

I'd have gone out for that team, or what if I hadn't quit that

job and just hanging a little bit longer, it's not a good feeling.

We call that feeling regret, and regret is a sign that, man,

we feel like we missed a great opportunity in our one and only life.

Now, not all bucket list stuff is equally Importantess, it's not going to

crush my life. If I don't ever take my wife on a gondola ride

through Venice, Italy, I will be okay. But if I don't do

some of the things that God has called me to do, God has gifted

me to do, God has nudged me to do, or God has given

me opportunities to do. Now, those are the things I will regret.

Here's what I believe today. I believe that every single one of us have

been given gifts by God, a calling by God to make great impact with

your life. Whether you are a teacher, a nurse, or whatever you're

gonna do life, whatever God calls you, whatever vocation inside of that and

outside of that, God has called you to make it great impact for His

kingdom. Could you imagine if some people were not faithful with their gifts.

What if Abraham Lincoln said, you know, I would love to be president,

but that sounds like a lot of work. What if Michael Angelo said

I would love to paint, but man, that's a lot of laying on

my back in the Sistine Chapel. We would all regret that. And so

today, here's what we're gonna do. We're gonna actually look at a parable

where Jesus talks about living a life without regrets. So here's what we're gonna

do today. Okay, so es just so everybody can follow along and understand

how I'm gonna break this parable up. The first thing I'm gonna do is

walk us through the first part of the story. The first part of the

story, Jesus is actually using a local character, a local person that that

audience would have known to just kind of, you know, be a master's

teacher, and so they can relate. The second part of the parable is

where we get into the main point. Okay, and what God is calling

us to do. So let's just go ahead and jump in, and let's

look at Luke nineteen today. And it says, as they heard these things

talking about the audience, Jesus proceeded to tell a parable. Because he was

near to Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the Kingdom of God was to

appear immediately. So Jesus said, I got a little story for you.

He says, a nobleman went into a far country to receive now pay attention

to this, to receive for himself a kingdom, and then returned. So

before he did that, he called ten of his servants together and he gave

them ten mina. Now, a mina is about four months of pay.

According to inflation this year, that's eight months of pay. Anyways, and

he said to them, engage in business until I come. But now I'll

pay attention to this detail too. His citizens hated him and sent a delegation

after him, saying, we do not want this man to reign over us.

Now, this story, the front part of this story is kind of

hard to understand unless you understand what the original audience would have understood. Who

and here has heard of Archelaus Raiser Hannah, Yeah, I didn't hear of

Archilaus until I studied this story. But Archaulaus is basically the nobleman that Jesus

is referring to in this story. Arkaulaus of was a son of Herod the

Great, and when Herod the Great died, he gave his three sons three

pro Now, Archilaus, and here's what you're gonna understand, Archelaus. Back

then, you did not become a ruler through popular vote. You either conquered

an area or you were appointed or somebody who knew you gave you that area.

Now you had two jobs as a ruler because Rome is ruling the world

during this time. So Rome is calling for you to do two things.

Number One, they don't want any rebellions. Now, why don't they want

rebellions because it costs a lot of money to send an army someplace, so

that keeps, you know, their calls down. Number two, you better

have those taxes come in the Rome now in order to do these two things

where you don't have a rebellion and you keep the tax money coming in.

A king or a ruler of a province has got to make sure that they

got those people in their province under their thumb. So Archelaus comes up with

this insane idea insane idea. He decides he'll never have to worry about a

rebellion or collecting taxes if he just kills three thousand Jewish men at the very

beginning of his reign. So at the very beginning of his reign, what

does Archaelaus do. He gathers three thousand Jewish men and he has them all

butchered and executed, and just shocks the whole community, and people are like,

you gotta be kidding me, and this is insane. And then,

by the way, what do we see then a group of Jews. When

Archaleus went off to Rome to meet with Caesar Augustus to receive his title and

his power as was custom, and we see in the text. We also

see that a delegation of Jews when Alona say, hey, by the way,

this Archilaus guys, he is a nutcase. Caesar, do not let

him be put in charge of us, and so again we see this in

the text as well. So here's what Jesus is doing. He's a master

teacher. He has this original audience, and he's using an event that happened

recently, okay, to bring it to his story. That way, everybody

who's listening to his story goes, oh, I know who you're talking about.

You're talking about Archelaus. Oh yoh, well, yeah, we remember

when he did that. Oh yeah, we remember when he did that.

And so Jesus is being a masterful storyteller here. But here's what Caesar did.

When Caesar heard from the Jews, he said, all right, Archallaus

sounds like he really messed things up there. I'm not gonna make you king

over that area. I'm basically gonna give you You're gonna be an intern.

Okay, So they made him a king intern. Did you imagine going back

to the people and being like, Hi, I'm the king intern. And

he was the king intern and the goal was, Hey, if you can

get everybody to get along together, then you could be the king in this

area. And that never happened. So all right, so I caught you

up. That's the original story. Jesus was Jesus. Now Jesus moves to

the main point of the story, and this is where jesus Us is the

people's response to the king. But it's also comparing how you and I are

to live our life in the meantime while our king is away and waiting for

his return. All right, let's look at this text together. What does

it say here? It says talking about the ruler. When he returned having

received the kingdom, he ordered these servants to whom he had given the money,

to be called to him that he might know what they had gained by

doing business. The first came before him, saying, Lord, your minah

has made ten minah more. And he said to him, hey, great

job, well done, good servant. Because you've been faithful very little,

you shall have authority over ten cities. By the way, they were not

expecting this. This is huge news. And the second one came and said,

Lord, your mina has made five more mina. And then he said,

all right, I'm gonna give you rule over five cities. So the

ruler, first of all, he's excited to see the faith fullness of those

he left behind why he went away. He's so excited that he gives him

extravagant rewards. They were not expecting these rewards. Ten cities, five cities,

huge rewards, huge benefits, huge pay Now you can imagine the shock

of the servants. They weren't ready for this. Now, this is where

we can't help but to compare our life to this story. And here's what

I want to do. I want you to understand. And graduates, if

you get this at your age, you're gonna be so much further ahead than

the rest of us. One day, every one of us is gonna stand

face to face before our ruler, our Lord, our king, our God,

and then we're gonna be called to give an account with what we did

with our resources, our time, and our talent. And the question will

be this, were you faithful in the in between time and the in between

time from the time that the Lord blushed you and get to you until you

meet him face to face. And this is a call to all of us

to be faithful even though our ruler to us. We might not see him

right now, he might be in heaven, but someday we will all stand

face to face before him. Now as we are buried, to shift and

to the last part of the parable, here's what we see. We see

a record screeching moment. I love the eighties movies. I love him,

love them, love them. And it seems like every time there's a party

and somebody has a party foul and they mess up, they do something stupid.

To emphasize this, what do they do, they have a record screech.

Well, this is like considered like an old Testament record screech. Okay,

because somebody commits a party foul in the last part of this parable,

check this out here it goes. Then another came saying, Lord, here's

your mina, which I kept laid away in a handkerchief, for I was

afraid of you, because you are a severe man. You take what you

did not deposit, You reap what you did not sew. And he said

to him, I will condemn you with your own words. Okay, all

right, because you wicked servant, you knew that I was a severe man,

taking what I did not deposit, and reaping what I did not sew.

Why then did you not put my money in the bank so that at

might coming I might have collected with interest? And then he said to those

who stood by, he says, all right, here's what I want you.

To take the mina from him and give it to the one who has

ten mina. Now you can imagine, can imagine this moment where this last

person comes up and they've watched these other people get these huge rewards, and

he's thinking to himself, well, I didn't lose money. And so he

walks up to the ruler and he hands him a handkerchief, and the rulers

like, what do I got mustard on my face? Am I sweating?

What's going on? He goes, no, this is your money back.

And then he does something that's insane. And by the way, this will

help any of you whoever get a job. All right, what does he

do when he does not do his part and earn more mina? What does

he do? In a text, he blames it on the boss. He

says, well, I knew that you were a severe man, so I

didn't want to risk losing this money. So, in other words, he

says, the reason that I only have one mina here is because of you

and the way you are. Let me just give you a good life lesson.

If you mess up at work, don't tell your boss you messed up

because the boss is an idiot. Okay, that's gonna help you tremendously adults.

Is that a good reminder for us too? Now, those of us

who are in the workplace, we might know that sometimes we do mess up

because our boss is an idiot, but we still don't tell them that,

okay. And so you know, he goes to the boss and he blames

it on the boss. And so what does the boss do? Takes even

what he had, and he gave it away. Now, this is a

major moment of regret. This is not a good moment. And you can

imagine how the servant was filling inside after watching everyone else be rewarded in extravagant

ways. And here the servant realized, I wasted an amazing opportunity. Now

for us in this room, two thousand years later, we have to ask,

what's the point of this parable what's Luke hoping that we get about Jesus

teaching today? Well, here it is the bomb mine is. God has

called each of us to be faithful with our resources that He has given us

to make a kingdom impact with our lives, not the person next to you

or the person in front of you, every single one of you. Did

you notice in this parable he called them all together, He sent them all

out, and all of them had to come back and answer. Every single

one one of us will be called to answer what did we do in between

times? So here's what I want to do for the next few moments.

I want to remind ourselves about what God has given us. Every single one

of you in this room. You have abilities, and you have talents.

Every single one of you have time. We have twenty four hours a day,

every single one of us. God, let me tell you, if

you are a follower of Christ, you've received the Holy Spirit. God will

birth dreams inside yourself. God will give you passions. And it's what do

we do with all of these things, these dreams, these talents, these

abilities. And Jesus's point is this that God did not give you all those

dreams and abilities and talents for you to roll them up in a handkerchief.

He's called us to be faithful with them. But the fact that Jesus told

us parable Hindic case that not everyone who is given talents and gifts are going

to use them. Now, why wouldn't we use these Why wouldn't we be

faithful with what God has given us? Hero I'm going to talk about a

few reasons as we kind of head down the path today. I think there's

a few reasons why we don't take steps and we're faithful with what God's you

know, is number one. I think fear and anxiety is a big one.

Fear and anxiety. It keeps a lot of us away from investing our

talents and our gifts and our abilities. Fear and anxiety it's a real thing.

It's a real thing that the enemy uses in our life so that we

will stay comfortable in a seat, stay comfortable in a pew, stay comfortable,

and never step out and take a risk. Now, I've shared this

a couple of times before, but for those of you who don't know,

you would never guess. The biggest source of anxiety in my life is public

speaking. Still did say twenty five years later, it's the thing that gives

me most anxiety. Look at me sweating. It's not hot up here.

This is anxiety. This is me thinking I said that joke, there should

have been more laughed five minutes ago. They didn't laugh. They went right

by it. What's wrong with them? And then I finally get to what's

wrong me? But anyways, but when I first started preaching and I would

be asked to preach to the adults at my home church, I would be

sick that whole week, that whole weekend because I didn't want to preach.

I was so nervous. And then I would often get calls and ask to

preach at this camper or preach at this revival, and I would turn them

down and say no, Now that's not something you're supposed to do as a

pastor. But I would say no, why because I didn't want to be

miserable all week Every Sunday as a youth pastor. My first six seven years

as a youth pastor, every Sunday, as soon as Sunday morning church was

over, I had a horrible stomach ache until Sunday night Youth was over.

Nervous as can be still to this day. Tyler Whitney, who attends Thursday

Night service every Thursday, he comes up to me says, James, how

can I pray? For you before you get up and preach, and he'll

tell you. Almost every single week, I'll say, my shoulder and my

neck, please pray for that right now, Well, what's going on my

anxiety? There's a ball there and it tightens up, so then he'll pray

over me that way, when I get up, I don't have all that

pain and that's anxiety. And here's the thing I want you to know that

often God will call us to do things and God will say, here's what

I want you to do. And yes, I believe God has equipped to

do this. I believe that God has called me to do this. I

believe that God will help me each and every single week. The last thing

I say before I step out on the stage every Sunday is this, God,

don't let me go out there by myself. You gotta come with me.

But let me tell you something. God loves to stretch us. God's

okay with me having twenty five years of anxiety over my preaching. You know

why every week I have to lean on him and let me tell you something.

Don't be shocked with the things that God is calling you to do in

your life causes you to have to lean on God. And by the way,

I would say this that if you really want to know that God is

in your adventure of life, pretty good sign that God is in the adventure

of your life is if you have to lean on him, because that's how

God gets glory, and that's how God strengthened us, and that God,

that's how God walks with us and grows us and shapes us. Second thing,

I think a lot of people don't do what God has called them to

do in their life is well because someone else has a dream for them,

you know, and and you know, we're always aware of what other people

think of us, and often we will do what other people expect. I

know a lot of people who wanted to do this or that, but their

mom and dad said nope, I'm not paying for your college unless you do

this. And I'm gonna tell you something right now, Graduates, don't let

someone else's dream for your life lead your life. God created you uniquely and

He has a special calling for every single one and it's for you. Okay,

you got to follow God's call in godsly. The third thing the influence

of our past. See a lot of us we have failures, We have

messed us we have these big moments in our life where we stepped out.

We try something, we want to do something, we started a business,

the business fail. We went and got this degree, but then when when

we got to the job and we didn't like the job, and then that

happened, and this happened, our marriage failed, and all these things,

and we look back at our life when we say, hey, you know

what, every single time I've stepped out, there's been failure. So then

God says, here's what I want you to do. I want you to

take a step here. I want you to take a step here, and

I want you to lead here. But we're like, man, I have

just a life of failure here. And I would tell you this, do

not let your past determine your future. Often, all these failures this preparation

for what God is going to have you do in your future. My childhood

best friend had the most unconventional way of becoming a pastor. But we were

juniors in high school. He got his girlfriend pregnant and then, you know,

while a lot of us were going off to college, he was in

and out of drug rehab. He had anger issues, messed up home life,

lived in poverty, had everything against him, yet he had this calling.

So he muscled his way through Bible college. And then he found a

woman and got married, and then he learned everything he could. He was

stay up so late every night reading books until he became a great theologian.

Let me fast forward twenty years later. He's up in Wisconsin now and he's

pastoring the largest church in that county. It's the place to be, it's

the church to be at. And now his whole family, all his kids,

are following Christ. He lives on a farm, and God is doing

a great work. I mean there's some times that they'll have a service in

there baptized in twenty five thirty people in a baptism service. God is doing

a great work through him. And sometimes and I just can't help but just

sit there and talk late in to the night, like how on earth did

you get here? How did you get here? You had everything against you,

had every excuse. But let me tell you some One thing I've been

asking us to do as a church is to be a people of grit.

In other words, we don't back down. We don't stop just because you

know there's some bumps in the road or things aren't going with We are people

who power through things because we believe in God's calling in our life. And

let me tell you something, with a little bit of grit and God in

your life, God can do amazing things through you. So don't let your

pass determine your futures. Somebody needs to hear that today. All right,

Lastly, some of you are like, you know what, James, I

would love to serve the Lord. I would love to find out specifically what

my calling is. And I know I have my job, but what's God

want me to do in my job? Or what God wants me to do

with ministry here to church or I would love to do but I just don't

know it. It's confusing to me. And I want to help you just

the last couple of minutes as we close up today, See, sometimes we

don't know it. And here's what I want to help you understand is many

people will say that we find you know, we will find our calling in

an intersection of three things. One is our values, okay, And our

values are basically the things that are important for you, okay. And how

can you tell what your value is? Well, here's a couple quick ways

to find out what you value in life want what angers you? If you

are listening and hearing about kids who don't have parents or kids who you know

are in a fosteris system, and that angers you to the point where you're

like, hey, I gotta do something about it. I gotta bring kids

in to my house. Probably that's probably a value to you. If you're

looking around you and say, man, these people, these young men just

are not getting disciple the way they need to get disciples. So I'm gonna

start a small group. Well, that's probably a value to So some things

that anger you that causes you to do something about it. Remember Martin Luther

King was angry at the treatment of African Americans during the time of segregation,

and that led from anger to m saying I have a dream. Their thing

is what gives you joy? What is something that when you do or dabbling

and brings you joy. That's probably that's where you're gonna find out your values.

Number two, your spiritual gifts. If you were a follower of Christ,

you have a spiritual gift. And I should be able to walk up

to any follow of Christ and ask you what are your spiritual gifts? And

you should be able to tell me what your spiritual gifts are because God loves

you. You are His children, and He is imparting his power and his

gifts into your life. Now, there's a couple of places in the Bible

that you can find your spiritual gift, you know, we look at one

Corinthians twelve fourteen or Romans twelve. But also let me tell you something,

all right, we have a great way for you to discover your giftingness.

You can just go on to our website another thing that says serve and we

have a shape assessment for you. Okay. At the end of your shape

assessment, we are more than happy to meet with you and help you figure

some things out. And you know what, maybe you did that in the

past, but now you're in a different place and you'd like to have a

conversation again about how God can use you. So here's what I want you

to do. I want you to reach out to Dave Hughes, not the

youth pastor, Dave Hughes. Okay, Now, if you're a teen,

reach out to Dave Hughes, the youth pastor. If you're not a team,

we have an older Dave Hughes. That's your day, Okay, is

that clear, very clear, clear as mud good. Here's Dave Hughes's email

address. What he does is he meets with people from our church and he

listens to you and he helps you figure things out. Lastly, you look

at your past experiences. God has already been doing some things in your life.

They'll help you figure out what you're calling is. It's the intersection of

your values, your spiritual gifts, and your past experiences. Now, as

we close out today, I want to speak to not only those of you

who are young, because I say, you got your whole life ahead of

you, and that's great, and you're gonna have some great moments of triumph,

but you're also going to have some moments where you're like, man,

where are you God? I thought we had a deal. If I was

a good kid and I went to college and I honored my mom and dad

and I didn't do this or that, that my whole life full of blessings.

I hope no one's taught you that your life will be full of blessings.

But often God allows us to go through struggles to grow us, to

shape us into the people that we will ultimately be. And for those of

us in this room, you might be in this dream and say, you

know what, I've had dreams for years, but they'd never been fulfilled.

Let me tell you something that is okay. You know, when I was

seventeen years old, halfway through my senior year, I came to Christ.

A couple months later, I felt a calling into ministry. You know,

it was very clear to me that I was going to be a senior pastor.

I knew that. It was very very clear to me. I went

to Bible College, I got my undergrad, went to grad school, did

all these things? Was it ministry full time? And I kept saying to

God, God, when am I going to be a senior pastor? Because

it was very clear to me that's what my calling was. And I missed

this opportunity. I missed this opportunity, or maybe I didn't get this job.

And I kept going on, all right, God, maybe I heard

you wrong, but I'm pretty sure I heard you right. You didn't know

what it wasn't until I was eight years old. So that's twenty one years

after my calling that God put me into place. God did not It seems

to me that God did not mind taking twenty one years to shape me.

Okay, but that's okay. And that's okay, and so God has his

hand on your life and God loves you, but don't rush the journey.

For those of you who have been walking for a long time, you're saying

that I missed the boat me and I'm a little bit too old. No,

what do I say around here? If you have breath in your lungs,

God still has something for you to do. So can we just take

some time now? By the way, I ended my sermon five minutes early.

Can everybody salute, collap praise the Lord? All right? I don't

even know how this happened. I'll make sure it doesn't happen next service.

I'll give them the full points. Can we just take some time to go

before the Lord and pray? And here's what I want for you, seniors.

I want you again just to offer your life to Lord and say,

Lord, here, I am here, I am here. I am for

those of you who are in behind these students. Again, ask the Lord?

Lord, am I being faithful with what you have called me to do?

God? Am I missing something? God? Are you speaking to me?

God? Are you nudging me to something? I just want us to

have an open heart today. So can we just pray. Let's just go

and this just take some time. Bow our heads, let's open our hands

to the Lord and say here I am Here, I am God, as

we discerned this morning, I pray that you are speaking to our adults in

the room right now, speak deeply to them, knock away the excuses and

help us. Just have open hands to you right now and just say,

all right, Lord, what is my next step? Here's what I want

you to figure out. Those of you adults, ask God, what is

your next step? What is your next step to fulfilling God's call and purpose

in your life? And now, Church, I want this just to if

our eyes continue to be closed, just go ahead and put your arms out

towards the front where these seniors are, and let's ask God to bless them.

God, we call on you again today and we just ask the You're
