Messianic Gifts: The Gift of Jesus Sacrifice

Well, good morning. It's good to be back with you.

I'm glad that you're here with us.

If you have your bible's turned with me to Hebrews

Hebrews chapter nine this morning Hebrews chapter nine.

The title of my sermon this morning is the Gift

of Jesus' sacrifice. I hope you had a good Christmas.

As we're getting ready for the new year, I know

you're making a lot of preparations for the new year,

maybe starting a new Bible reading plan. Something I do

every year as we start a new year is kind

of give you some resources to help you with your.

Starting maybe a new devotion or something like that. And

so just one resource I want to mention to you today.

Before we begin is our Bible app. So if you

go to your app store, if you have a Google

app that we have and on that app there's a

Bible section, there's a Bible reading plan there, there's resources

there for you to read your Bible, help you with

your Bible study. So I just encourage you to use

that as something that I followed the Bible reading plan

there every year, and so it's just something that really,

really the best way for us to grow in our

faith is to be in the Word of God. So

I encourage you to find something as you start twenty

twenty five, find some.

New resource or some resource to help.

You grow in reading God's word today as we look

at the time of my sermon is the gift of

Jesus sacrifice.

Now.

You know, as we come to the end of the year,

one thing that.

We always do is we always like to look.

Back on twenty twenty five and find out what were

the best things of twenty twenty five. You know, what's

the best what was the best movies from twenty twenty five,

what's the best TV shows?

What's the best music from twenty twenty five.

Maybe as we're just finishing up the last week of Christmas,

maybe you're thinking about what was the best gift you

got last year over Christmas? You know, I think I

kind of gave you a little hint, and I couldn't

give a lot of hints, you know, before Christmas. But

I told you this year Breddy didn't give me any

Christmas list, So I'm not going to tell you about

my best gift.

I want to tell you about the best gift I

gave this year.

So I told you that, you know, m Brady gives

me a nice Christmas list, really lays out everything.

She wants, prioritizers. I mean, I've got it.

This year didn't getting lists, and so I told you

that she got the most random stuff. So my favorite

gift I gave her, hold on, I know you're really

just have anticipation, was a microwave cover. Right, so you

know when you go your dishes, you get splattered when

you put something to microwave. Do you know on Amazon

there's things you can buy and it's a cover you

put over this said, I went with this what we

call a practical Christmas. Practical Christmas gift gifts that you

can use all year long.

And so you know, every time she.

Puts something in the microwave, puts that little trade, She's

gonna think about.

Me and how great this gift was.

Right, And so that was not her best gift, by

the way, And she will tell you that, but I

tell you that is we do really like to think

about what is the best gifts, what's the best things.

And you know when we think about gifts, or when

we think about what is the best things from last year?

We compare, right, we compare to something else we've got.

We compare things to one another. We do this all

the time, not just at the end of the year.

We do like what's the best team we Duke or Carolina?

There there's also another team I think on Thesea State.

But we compare those two to one another.

Right.

We we compare like, what's the best for our kids here?

And what's the best show for our kids for the

kids that will say with maybe blue Eye write or

maybe Spider Man and his amazing friends. Right, we compare

those to one another. We compare what is the best cups?

Right?

It's the big things that's happening in for our teens today,

Stanley cup or a Walla cup.

Right.

We compare things, right. We compare what's the best stores

where there? It's shopping stores that you made. We compare

vehicles for Chivrolet, right, it's been a debate for the

throughout the.

History of time.

Another one that's Jordan and Lebron Right, iPhone or Samsung.

We compare things.

Well, this morning, as we come to this pastor scripture

Hebrews Hebrews out throughout the entire book of Hebrews is

comparing things to one another, and it's comparing Jesus to

other things, and how Jesus is always better. In chapter

one and two, Jesus is better than the angels. In

chapter three, Jesus is better than Moses. In chapter four,

Jesus provides better rest than the Promised Land. In chapter

five and seven, Jesus is a better high priest. In

chapter eight, Jesus provides a better covenant. And in chapter nine,

this morning, Jesus provides a better sacrifice. And so this morning,

as I want us to read chapter nine together and

a portion of chapter nine, and I want to see

the greatest gift of all time, and the greatest gift

that was ever given for you and I was the

gift of Jesus's sacrifice. And this morning, as we examined

this gift, I want us to see that the gift

of jesus sacrifice is better than any gift we could

ever give God. This is actually a message, and many

of this messages familiar to many of our BCA families.

Is a message I shared with our.

Chapel just a few days, a few weeks ago, but

I felt like it was such a great message I

want to share it with you this morning as well.

So let's stand and.

Let's read Hebrews chapter nine, and we're going to start

verse one and we're going to read through. We'll start

at the beginning. We'll kind of break this up into pieces.

So read Hebrews chapter nine one through ten, and then

we'll come back and finishes eleven through fourteen.

So let's read this together.

Now, even the First Covenant had regulations for worship in

the earthly place for holiness. For a tent was prepared

in the first section, in which were the lamp stands

and the table and the bread of presents.

It is called the Holy Place.

Behind the second current was a second section called the

most Holy Place, having a.

Golden altar of incense in the arc of.

The covenant, covered all sides with gold, in which was

a golden urn holding the Man and aaron staff that

butted in the tap of the Covenant. Above it were

the Chairman of Glory, overshadowing the mercy seat.

Of these we cannot speak in detail.

These preparations having thus been made, the high priests go

regularly into the first section, performing their original duties. But

in the second only the high Priest goes, and he

goes once a year, and not without taking blood for

which he offers for himself and for the unintentional sins

of the people. By this, the Holy Spirit indicates that

the way into the Holy Place is not yet open

as long as the first section is still standing, which

is symbolic for the present age.

According to this.

Arrangement, gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot listen is

very important, that cannot perfect the conscience of.

The worshiper, but only deal with food and drink.

And various washings regulations for the body imposed until the

time of Reformation.

Let's pray together. Father, I thank you Lord for this morning.

And God, I pray that this morning we would we

would look upon Lord, we would compare Lord, Lord.

What you gave us compared to what we can give you. God.

And Lord, I pray today that we would see that.

Your gift of your son Jesus is the greatest gift

that's ever given. And Lord, I pray today that we

would receive that gift if we've never done that. I

pray that we would cherish that gift today.

Lord, we love you. We thank you Lord for today.

We thank you.

Lord for your word. I pray, Lord, Lord, you know

my heart, you know my mind. Lord, do you know

my preparation, You know what brought us here this morning?

And Lord, I pray that you would feel me, Father,

that I might speak Lord your word, and Lord, that

the hearers today would be moved by Lord, not my.

Words, but yours.

So may your spirit feel me. May you feel our

church this morning and those who are watching. And Lord,

we pray that today we would hear from you. Lord,

in your name, we pray you may be see them,

if you can imagine this morning. As I've mentioned the

writer of Hebrews, we don't by the way, he wouldn't

know who the writer is. Many speculated it's Paul, and

so you may even hear me reference Paul today.

But we actually don't know exactly who the writer is.

But we do compare things, right, As I've mentioned, we

compare Duke to Carolina many other things, and in Hebrews nine,

the Hebrews, the writer of Hebrews is comparing, right, just

like we compared Duke in Carolina. He would he's comparing

the Old Testament, sacrifices, right, that was done by the

Old Testament sacrificial sacrificial system in the Old Testament Covenant.

He's comparing those sacrifices to Jesus's sacrifice that when he

died on the cross and rose again, he offered himself

a propitiation.

Scripture sys for our sin. They find our sacrifice for

all the sins of mankind.

So he's comparing these two sacrifices, the sacrifice of the

Old Testament to the sacrifice of Jesus in the New Covenant.

And he's comparing these two together. That's what this passage

is all about, says we begin in verse and what

we just read one through ten.

He's first laying out, if you will, the imagery of

the Old Testament sacrifice. He's explaining that if you think

about this, you think.

That this is a way that the Old Testament people

Israel would offer sacrifices for their sins. Right, So they

wouldn't say they would give gifts as we give gifts

to one another. They would give something to the Lord,

as with the desire that maybe this sacrifice would that

they would find forgiveness of their sin through the sacrifice.

You know it wouldn't give God a microwave cover, right,

or they give him whatever, a new phone or something we.

May give someone at Christmas. They would give other things.

And then as we looked at chapter nine here, what

would they give? They would give sacrifices.

We know that as you read the Old Testament, Leviticus

and many the tour of the first five books of

the Old Testament, we see the sacrificial system put in place, and.

We understand they would give different things.

Right, some would give a bowl, some would according to

their means and.

Would give a lamb, some would give a dove.

Right, And they would come and they would give this

to the priest, and the priest would take this gift

from these individuals, these sacrifices.

Maybe a better term it would.

Give it to the priests, and the priests would take

these sacrifices, and they would offer these sacrifices.

On behalf of the individual.

And the scripture kind of outlines this in the first part, right,

it describes the Old Testament. It described I mean the

I'm sorry, it describes the Old Testament.

Is the word here.

The first part, and I think we have a picture

of the Old Testament temple here if you could see

it here, this is the This is Solomon's temple, and

so the passage of scripture, if you look at it,

it describes the for the tent was prepared the first section,

and so before the temple there was a tent, but

it was outlined also in the temple. So as you

go in the first door, you see the little priest

there in the middle.

That's the first.

Place, and that was called the holy place, right, and

so you can imagine these are different basins. They would

come and bring these these sacrifices to the priest.

The priest would take the.

Animal and he would go in the inner part and

he would offer that animal of whatever, lamb ull, goat whatever, He.

Would offer it in that first section for the sins

of that individual.

So that that was a regular thing that was happening, right.

So that's the holy place.

If you see up the steps.

And then where the chairbyne, that's what they call the

most holy place in scriptures describing this picture, he's saying,

this is the way it was in the Old Testament.

This was the Old Testament sacrifices.

Individuals who were Jewish people regularly would offer sacrifices to

God for their sins, a lamb, go boy, whatever it

may be. They regularly did that, and regularly they brought

it to the temple. Regularly the priests would take that sacrifice,

go into the Holy Place and offer it for the

sins of that individual.

And then but once the year, one priest who was

chosen by lot, would go into the.

Holy Place, the most Holy place. And then it describes

what was in the Holy Place.

The tablets, the Aaron's staff that was there.

And he would go into the most Holy Place.

But he wouldn't just go, he would go in what

scripture describes here. Listen to this. It says in verse seven,

but in the second only this high.

Priest goes, only goes once a year, but not without

taking blood, which he offered for himself.

So he would go into this most Holy.

Place and he would take blood, which was a sacrifice

that he would offer to cover.

His own sins. And then in that once a year

he would he would.

Offer a sacrifice for the unintentual sins of all of hisuel.

But if you think about this Old Testament sacrifice system

that's laid out in Hebrews one through ten, something that

happened regularly year after year, time after time. Can you

imagine if you read through the I've had a lot

of people read through the Bible reading plan startup, maybe

the very first time, and they said, they would say

to me, pastor, what's why is all these sacrifices? I mean,

David would in one time thirty something thousand animals were

offered in one sacrifice or one day the dedication to

the temple or something.

Right, why's all these sacrifices? And this was something that

was happening.

But you know, there's problems with these sacrifices if you

think about it.

These sacrifices was trying to satisfy.

The sins of the individual, right, So that's one Regularly

they would offer these sacrifices. Once a year, they would

offer the sacrifices for the sins of all.

But this is happening year and year. They were trying

to satisfy something. Right.

Can you imagine have you ever been have you ever

done something to someone right, And maybe it's a spouse, right,

and you maybe had a little argument or just a discussion,

but it was a serious discussion. So you thought, as

a husband, the best way to make peace with the

discussion that you just had is a goodbye or flowers? Right,

a box of chocolates, right, maybe a micro wave cover.

But you do that right by thinking, if I give

the to her, right, these flowers, the box of chocolates,

microwave cover, right, maybe that will satisfy.

Her frustration or anger, whatever it may be.

Right, So you think by giving something, it's going to

satisfy that. Now, if you take that imagery, that's what

the sacrifices were doing, right, That's.

What the Old Testament.

Sacrifice were attens by the individuals, by the people of

Israel to.

Offer something to God. Right, and by offering.

Something to God, it might satisfy the sin that was committed. Right,

you think about this kind of was the point. Let

just think about for a second. Can you imagine as

you think about your life and the things that you've

done against God. Let's think about that for a minute.

Think about the sin you've committed against God last week,

last year. You know, we all have that one sin

that if I could go back in time and do over,

there's one sin that I regret more than any other sin.

Just think about that sin. Now, Think about what could

you give God that you think you could give God

that would satisfy that sin, that would erase it, that

make up that He would maybe forgive you if you

gave him that. You know, if that was the case

for many of you.

You know what, you may give.

Something for one moment, for one day, or for one Sunday,

But the problem is what next week's coming, next year's coming.

And you know, you might give something that maybe you

felt like God forgave you. But the problem is next

week you're going to sin again, or maybe in next

year you're going to sin again.

And what's going to happen.

Is next year you're gonna be right back here again

offering something to God again, trying to find satisfaction or

trying to find forgiveness. And the problem is with the

Old Testament sacrificial system is that they never satisfied.

The sins of the individual.

Look at layout for you. Several scriptures shows us in

Hebrews nine one through ten, problems with this Old Testament sacrifices. One,

the sacrifices were temporal solutions in institutions. You know, the

Old Testament sacrifices were only temporary. Sacrificial system is not

done today, It's not continually.

It only could it only happened for a period of time.

Even the institution of the temple, it is not in

it's not today, it's not in existence today. That temple,

the last temple that was built, was built by Herod.

And it was destroyed in seventy a d.

There's no If you go to Jerusalem today, you will

not find a temple there. You will not find people

of Israel still offering sacrifices. There is the temples destroyed.

There's a whaling wall.

And you'll see people go and offer prayers at the

whaling wall. But there's no sacrificial system. The sacrificial system

of the Old Testament was always was never meant to

be a permanent solution to find forgiveness of sin. It

was always a temporal solution and a temporal institutions. Secondly,

the sacrificials, the sacrifices never met the demands of sin.

As I've said, can you imagine offering something to God

to fine forgiveness of your sin, giving him some type

of gift, whether it was an animal or something that

you could buy today, It would never, it would never, never.

Satisfy the demands of sin.

Third, the sacrifices were not willing sacrifices.

You can imagine these individual rules of the Jews.

Time after time, they would have there were farmers at

the time, so they would have different animals and they

would send that week.

Maybe they lied, or maybe they did.

Something wrong, maybe had bitterness, anger or whatever it may be.

So they came.

To send a god on the Sabbath of Saturday. They

had a flock of lamb and they took their best lamb.

He said, you know, I need to go to the

I need to go to the to worship.

And they needed to offer the scott side because I've sent.

You maybe had something. They took their lamb and brought it.

But you know they maybe I don't know if that

had a leash or whatever it may be, but they.

Brought it in.

I don't know if you we have pets, We've had

dogs and one of the dogs that had his name,

he was a lab and one thing he hated was

going to the vet.

And he just could.

Sense like when we were headed to the vet, when

we got to the vet, where we were and he

was only high alert right and then I would like

remember dragging him into the vet, like he knows what's

about to happen. Can you imagine how many times someone

had their lamb and as they were taking it.

To offer it to the sin of God, that they.

Were pulling it, dragging this animal. The animals were never

willingly sacrifice and not willing sacrifices.

The problem with the Old Testament sacrifices.

Listen, there were only temporary solutions. They never met the

demands of sin, and they're not willing sacrifices.

They never ever met the demands of sin.

Look at what this passage says. In verses nine and ten.

He says that which is picking up in the word,

according to this, arrangements and gifts the sacrifice are offered.

Listen to this. That cannot perfect the conscience.

Of the worshiper, but only deal with food and drink

in various washings, regulations for the body imposed until the

time of Reformation. So he's looking at Hebrews writers saying,

as we look at the Old Testament sacrifices and we're

comparing them to what Jesus did.

Listen, they never they never perfected the conscience of the worshiper.

They never cleaned the worshiper. Gift after gift, year after year.

Why did they continue to offer more sacrifices. Why did

they continue to offer a sacrifice on the day of

Potoma every year?

Why?

Because what was given the year before, or what was

given the week before, what was given the month before,

never ever satisfied?

You ever had it?

You ever gotten a gift at Christmas and it was

like the greatest gift of all time, like a microwave cover,

and you thought, this is the greatest gift I have

ever received.

That's it, that's it. I don't want any more gifts.

They'll ever buy me a Birthday gift, ever buy me

a Christmas gift ever Again. I've gotten all that I've

ever wanted in this life. When this microwave cover, I

am completely satisfied. That's never happened never Why because this

year you got more Christmas gift? This year you maybe

made another list. Right for some of you, to be

honest with you, if you even think about what last

year is, you can't even remember what you got last

year for a Christmas. You know, just when we thought

we got a great gift, we forget what it was

from year to year. Right, there's never.

Ever completely satisfied.

And the reality is just like we can never receive

a gift that will satisfy us. Listen, God can never

receive a gift that you could give him that would

completely satisfy the sin.

That you've committed against him.

There's no gifts, there's no if you could think about,

what would you give God, right that could that you

might appease what you've done against him? Right, there is

nothing that you could give him. Nothing you can say,

I can, I can. I'll give perfect church attendants. It

won't satisfy, right, I can, I can serve in different

capacities at the church.

It won't satisfy.

Right, Well, I can give him money. I can give

him tithe that I can give it won't satisfy. I'll

buy God a house, or I buy Jesus a house

at the beach.

It'd be very nice, you know, all the nice furniture

that's You can give him the greatest things of this world.

You can give him a new car, a new truck,

whatever it may be, the greatest.

Things that this world can offer.

And there's nothing that you could ever give God that

would ever satisfy your sins. Nothing, no amount of your

works of coming to church or serving in church, No

matter things that you could materially give him, there would

be nothing that would ever ever satisfy what you've done

against God, you know, as you ever going back to

my question before, many people ask me the Old Testament sacrifices.

What's the point? Why were they all in the Old Testament?

Why does a Hebrews chapter nine bring us back to

think about the Old Testament sacrifices? Why does he make

us think about these sacrifices? The animals that were offered regularly,

the animal to offer for the sin of the priests,

that he might offer a sacrifice for the sins of

all of Israel once a year. Why why sacrifices? Why

did God even choose sacrifices? Why did he just choose

you you give some type of gift or monetary thing

or to the church. And why why did they Why

it had to be an animal? And why did the

animal have to die? Why did they have to to

give blood? I mean take blood in for the import

over the mercy seat, for the cleansing of Why here

it is through the sacrificial system. Listen to this is

very important theologically. Through the sacrificial system, God talk. Listen,

Sin demands death, through the sacrificial system. God talked sin

demands death. Listen to this is very important that you

conceptually understand this.

Jesus talked through the Old test.

And that something had to die that we might be

cleansing sin.

It was no.

Works that could cleanse us of sins, no monetary gift

that we could give God. Right, there's no thing that

we could buy God, a house or car, or whatever

it may be. Something had to die that we might

find forgiveness of sin. For the Old Testament, individuals had

to offer an animal who would listen to this.

Who would die in that worshiper's place.

The animals that were brought in not willingly were dying

and being sacrificed. What that the worshiper might be forgiven

of sin? Listen? The sacrificial system taught that God.

Taught sin demands death. Here's the beauty of Christmas.

As we continue walking through Hebrews nine, the beauty of

Christmas is this, There's nothing that you and I could

ever give God. Right, they satisfied our sin. God knew

that no sacrifice we could ever give. There's no sacrifices

of the Old Testament. Whatever satisfy the demands a sin,

No death previously ever given that was satisfied. There's no

monetary gifts that we could give God that was satisfied.

Therefore God sent his only son at Christmas.

This is this as a gift to be a sacrifice

for your sins once and for all.

Can you just let that settle in as we think

about Christmas, we think about a baby being born in

a manger named Jesus, also named Emmanuel, God with us,

and he came for the purpose of what to live and.

Die on the cross to be your sacrifice.

God knew there was nothing that you could ever do.

There's nothing that could ever be done in the Old Testament,

sacrificial covenant, or sacrificial system that would that you would

ever find cleansing of your sin and it would clear,

that would clear your conscience. So therefore God's and his

only son at Christmas to be the one sacrifice that

was satisfied the demands of sin.

Let's look at this.

Look at look at Hebrews chapter nine, starting of verse eleven.

That's the way it says. But when Christ appeared as

the high priests of.

The good things that were that had come then through

the greater and more perfect tint not made with hands,

that is not of this creation. He entered once and

for all into the Holy Place, not by the means

of blood, of goats or cash, but the means of

his own blood, thus securing listen to this eternal redemption.

For if the blood of goats and balls, and sprinkling

of default persons with the of a heifer sanctify for

the purification of the flesh, how much more would the

blood of Christ, through the eternal Spirit, offered himself without

blemish to God, purifying our conscience from the dead works

to serve the living God. The gift of Jesus sacrifice.

Let's look at these together first.

The gift of Jesus sacrifice was a permanent solution. You

know the Old Testament sacrifices were always temporary.

Right Could he given it one sacrifice.

And the worshipper would sin the next week and he

went to bring in another animal. Right, because they never

satisfied the demands of sin.

They were always a temporary solution.

Year after year, the priests would offer sacrifice for the

sins of all Israel. Why because they were always temporary solutions.

It was never a permanent solution. When Jesus appeared in

scripture says as is Hebrews writers comparing the Old Testament

to what Jesus has done. When Jesus appeared, he appeared

as what the high priest.

Scripture says of the good.

Things to come, and he went in listen as given

the imagery of the temple, of the Holy Place and

the most holy place. Jesus went into the most holy place,

and that is the holy Place of heaven.

A temple that's not made.

With hands is not an earthly temple, but a heavenly temple.

He entered into a heavenly.

Temple, and he offered himself as a permit solution for

your sin.

Listen.

Scripture says, and all he is the gift of Jesus

sacrifice at permit solution.

But secondly, the gift of.

Jesus sacrifice satisfies the demands of sin.

Listen, sin demands death.

Your sin that you've committed against Holy God, that you

thought about things that you may be done last week

or maybe throughout your life.

That sin demands death. Jesus knew that, and he knew there's.

Nothing you could ever give him that was satisfied. The

demands of your sin. So therefore he sent his only

son to die on across that he might satisfy the

demands of your sin. He's not a wonderful truth. He

knew there's nothing we could ever give him. There's nothing

we could ever do that satisfied the demands.

Of what we've done against him.

So therefore he offered himself as a sacrifice to.

Satisfy the demands of our sin. Scripture says in verse thirteen.

He entered in verse twelve and to once and for

all into the Holy Place, not by the means of blood.

Of goats, of cash, but he entered by the means

of his own blood. He offered himself.

He died on the cross for our sins, that by

his blood he might redeem us. Scripture says, thus securing

what not temporal redemption, what eternal redemption?

Verse thirteen It says.

For if the blood of goats and bulls, and sprinkling

defiled persons with the ashes of the heifer.

Sanctify for the purification of flesh, how.

Much more would the blood of Christ, through the eternal Spirit,

offer himself without blemage to God. Listen to this purifying

our conscious from the dead works to serve a living

God if you go. Compare verse fourteen to verse ten.

But that verse ten says, but only deal with food

and drinking, various washings for the body. But verse I'm sorry,

I gave you the wrong verse verse verse nine says,

the gifts of sacrifice or offer cannot perfect the conscience

of the worshiper. That's the Old Testament. The New Covenant,

of the Covenant of Jesus' blood. It purifies our conscious

it satisfies the demands of our sins. Thirdly, the gift

of Jesus sacrifice was a willing sacrifice, you know, as

they would bring in those sacrifices the Old Testament, the lambs,

the goats, the bulls, they were not willing sacrifices. They

were chosen by their owner, and they were brought in

to be to be offered as a sacrifice for the

sins of the owner. In verse fourteen, it describes, Jesus

was a willing sacrifice for you. He didn't come and

live die reluctantly. He came, He left heaven, he came

to earth.

Scripture says, for God.

So loved the world that he gave his only son

that whosoever believed in him shall not perish, but have

everlasting life.

God gave his son, and his son came willingly, and

he willingly died on.

The cross, to be your substitute, to be the perpitchation

for your sins. Scripture says, Look at verse fourteen, how

much more were the blood of Christ through Listen to

this The eternal Spirit offered himself, the eternal spirit there

is not the Holy Spirit, that is the spirit of Jesus,

and the spirit of Jesus there is. He offered himself

unblemish to God, perfect without sin, born of a virgin.

He offered himself. This is a act of will.

This is a supreme act of volunteer sacrifice. What does

Jesus say in the Garden of Yosemite, Not my will

but Thy will?

Lord. He surrendered himself to the will of God, to

be a Scripture.

Says, a willing sacrifice. Look at what Scripture says in
