  1. Church money to those who are joining us online. We

  2. start a new season. It's August. It's August already. Are

  3. you ready for the Are you ready for heading towards Christmas?

  4. And somebody's gone, oh no, don't tell me that, Dave.

  5. We're near at the end of the year than we

  6. are the beginning. That's a statement of truth that's been

  7. true for months, and we step into a new theme

  8. as we step into August. So every one of you

  9. has or should have a card either on the chair

  10. that you're sitting on and you're sitting on the card,

  11. or it's on a chair next to you. This is

  12. a card that we used on our outreach yesterday and

  13. I'm going to be preaching a little bit from this.

  14. One of the things that we do as a church

  15. is we want people to talk to people. Is it

  16. good to talk? Is it good? Do you sometimes not

  17. know how to start a conversation? You know, you go

  18. to I don't know, you go to a cheese and

  19. wine party, you go to a business meeting. You're all

  20. standing around and some people are standing on the side

  21. a little bit awkward, and other people are being really

  22. loud in the middle, and sometimes you just don't know

  23. how to start, and you're looking for a trick. You're

  24. looking for something to help us to start something. That's

  25. the purpose of everything that's on the table at the

  26. back leaflets. If you want to take them away, take

  27. them away. We give away some freebies and these are

  28. really they're not about giving things away for free. You

  29. get the wrong idea if we're just trying to give

  30. away for free. For example, we have a carrier bag

  31. and it says on it helping you to carry your load, okay,

  32. And so if you see some if I want everybody

  33. in church to have one of these in their handbag.

  34. If you haven't got a handbag, gents, then in your

  35. pocket or in your briefcase, so that when you see

  36. somebody struggling down the road with a load of stuff,

  37. you say, hey, I've got something that can help you,

  38. and you take the bag out and you give it away. Now,

  39. what's the first thing you would say if somebody offer

  40. you a bag? Thank you? Yeah? And then you might

  41. put stuck and then you'll maybe read on the outside

  42. and say, oh, running me Christian followship, what's that You're

  43. not having to work out a conversation here, guys, they're

  44. asking you a question. Every single one of the things

  45. that we give away says helping you to or should do.

  46. And we give away a mug that says helping you

  47. to quench your thirst. We give away a magnifier that

  48. says helping you to have a clearer vision. They're all

  49. simple things that people struggle with carrying things around. If

  50. you have a workman who comes to your house and

  51. maybe does some gardening and you offer them a cup

  52. of tea, give it to them in a church mug,

  53. and then when they get to the end and say,

  54. why don't you take it away? Please be blessed. That's

  55. the whole purpose of these things is not just to

  56. give stuff away. It's to start a conversation. And the

  57. card that we gave away yesterday to a number of people,

  58. and thanks for all that. The number of people who

  59. came and helped us as we met on the high

  60. street and reached out to people was just having a

  61. conversation with people. And I'm going to look through some

  62. of these things today because we step in to a

  63. new series for August. His story or my story? His story?

  64. What's it about? It's about evangelism, and so the title

  65. of what I want to share today could be summarized

  66. like this Empowered by Grace, commissioned with power. Does anybody

  67. you need a torch in the middle of the night

  68. and you go to you know where it is because

  69. you put it in that place where you always remember

  70. to put your torch. You know you've done that kind

  71. of thing, haven't you? In case of emergencies, you know

  72. where your torch is. You reach in the dark into

  73. the drawer, You get hold of your torch. It's a torch.

  74. You press the button. Nothing happens. Now what do you do?

  75. You can't see because you can't see. Now you're fumbling

  76. around in the dark. And if there's no electricity because

  77. the light the power's gone off, you're a bit stuck.

  78. Maybe you need to find a candle in the dark

  79. and find some matches in the dark, or find another torch.

  80. Why might the torch not work? Number One, you've forgotten

  81. to put any batteries in there. Number two, the batteries

  82. are flat. Just let me encourage you. If you've got

  83. an emergency torch, just test it once in a while.

  84. It's always a good thing there. Emergency things are there

  85. for emergencies. Two Corinthians five twenty says this, we are

  86. therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal

  87. through us. We implore you, on Christ's behalf, be reconciled

  88. to God. You and I are ambassadors for something. Your

  89. ambassadors for your family. You represent your family. Your ambassadors

  90. for the nation that you were born in, your ambassadors

  91. for the company that you work for. You might be

  92. ambassadors for the church. Well, an ambassador carries something. An

  93. our ambassador is never empty handed. They will go and

  94. they will have They might be empty handed, but they

  95. have a message. And what I want to explore today

  96. is what might that message be? Because we're a commissioned

  97. as ambassadors. The moment you were born again, you are

  98. not just saved. You were sent. That doesn't necessarily mean

  99. to another country. But maybe you've been sent to your work.

  100. Maybe you've been sent to your postcode, maybe you've been

  101. sent to your university. You know, I want to ask

  102. the question, are we missing out on mission? We're sent

  103. into the world, which is a place full of confusion

  104. all the I don't know what your phone does, but

  105. my phone regularly bleeps and says, oh, this terrible thing's happening.

  106. It's always bad news. I think I don't want to

  107. hear the bad news. Tell me some good news, please,

  108. mister app But you know, the world's full of trouble,

  109. the world's full of struggles. You know, the Church was

  110. never meant to be a cruise ship. The Church is

  111. meant to be a battleship. We're not sent into this

  112. world of confusion with just a simple message. We're sent

  113. with a message of reconciliation. We carry Heaven's diplomatic authority.

  114. If you're a diplomat, if you're a representative, if you're ambassador,

  115. you carry some authority. And you can choose whether you

  116. want to use that or not. That's a different matter.

  117. And I'm not going to go into today. But are

  118. we Heaven's representative to our post code, to our workplace,

  119. to our university, to the boardroom, to our friends, to

  120. our family, to the high street. It's not in the

  121. in the in the scriptures on screen. But Isaiah six

  122. verse eight says this. Then I heard a voice from

  123. the Lord's saying whom shall I send and who will

  124. go for us? And I said, here, I am send me.

  125. You know, if we're not going somewhere we're missing part

  126. of our mission, and we need to carry the power

  127. of the Gospel with us. Romans Chapter one, verse sixteen

  128. says this, for I am not ashamed of the Gospel

  129. of Christ. For it is the power of God to

  130. salvation for everyone who believes, for the jew first, and

  131. also for the Greek, so for all mankind. The Gospel

  132. is not a weak, dusty, hopeless power. It's the power

  133. of God. When we speak it, we release more than

  134. just words and information. We release transform me. The Gospel

  135. carries the fire of God. It breaks chains when spoken

  136. with anointing. We don't need to have an excuse for it.

  137. We don't need to edit it. Let's just proclaim the

  138. word of God and let the spirit to the rest.

  139. Romans ten, verse seventeen says, So then faith comes by hearing,

  140. and hearing by the word of God. You know, salvation

  141. is simple in some senses. Romans ten, verse nine. If

  142. you declare with your mouth, if you declare with your

  143. mouth and believe in your heart God that God has

  144. raised him from the dead, you will be saved, not

  145. might be not, maybe you will be safe. Salvation is

  146. not complicated. It's a fashion it's a belief. It's a gift,

  147. and we're called to deliver that gift to others. You know,

  148. there's nothing better than presenting a gift to somebody. Do

  149. you enjoy giving gifts to people? You know? Sometimes I

  150. have the privilege somebody says, Dave, can you give this

  151. to somebody else? I think, Oh, I didn't even have

  152. to buy it, and I get the privilege of giving it. Yeah,

  153. when you go up to anybody and say this is

  154. for you, some people go for me. You know, they

  155. don't even feel they deserve a gift. And then when

  156. they accept the gift, even before they've unwrapped it, even

  157. before they've used it, a smile appears on their face.

  158. Someone's giving me something. Ephesians two, verses eight and nine

  159. says this for it is by grace. You have been

  160. saved through faith, not of yourselves. It is the gift

  161. of God, not of work, Lest anyone should boast, it's

  162. the gift of God. The challenge is that, because I'm

  163. talking about empowered by grace, we've got to realize this

  164. gift is free. Sometimes when we give these gifts away,

  165. you know, we've done this on the high street. We'll

  166. literally been on the high street giving away gifts to

  167. start a conversation and people say, can I give you

  168. some money? When we did love Eggham in May with

  169. Saint John's, we stood outside the station giving away pastries

  170. and giving away vouchers for coffee, and people said, where

  171. do I put the money? He said, no, it's free.

  172. Now do you know what was going on in their

  173. heads and in their hearts? What's the trick? What's the

  174. hidden idea? They couldn't believe that we wanted to give

  175. something to them for free, So well, and here's the thing.

  176. For quite a few people, we gave pastries to it.

  177. Then went to the next question. Why. That's a fantastic

  178. question when you give a gift. Why are you giving

  179. me this gift? And you can go down a number

  180. of roots here because the Bible says, because I love you,

  181. if you want to go down that route, because I'm

  182. being obedient, because we're we as the church, are doing

  183. it because God loves you. You know, all of those

  184. are valid. Pick your choice. One of the things that

  185. we did yesterday as we prayed and outreached yesterday was

  186. we I said, there's various different ways, but number one

  187. talk to somebody. Number two asked the Holy Spirit to

  188. help you in your conversation and see where you end up.

  189. If you end up talking about football, and you felt

  190. that was the direction of the Holy Spirit. Okay, that

  191. may be their passion. You know, if they spend every

  192. Saturday in the winter time with their hands up in

  193. the air going yes, you can connect with him on

  194. something and you can then bring it back to the

  195. things that you're passionate about. It's free to us because

  196. it cost Christ everything. So the price has been paid

  197. not by the Church, but by the Son of God.

  198. The Son of God died on a cross for our

  199. sin and for our sickness and for our salvation. But

  200. he rose again. This is not a dead faith that

  201. we have. It's a living faith. And we receive him

  202. in all his fullness and all his glory. Keith Hazel,

  203. who is now with the Lord. He said this which

  204. I don't just explain salvation prophesy. It call people to

  205. their identity as sons and daughters of the Living God.

  206. You know, there were a couple of conversations I had

  207. yesterday and I ended up in a place I wasn't

  208. expecting in terms of not physically. But in the conversation,

  209. how why am I ending up here? I'm ending up

  210. here because I'm connecting with the person in the space

  211. that they feel comfortable in. We are empowered to impact

  212. the world acts one verse eight. You will receive power

  213. when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. That torch is

  214. useless without batteries that don't work. We as Christians without

  215. the Holy Spirit are empty. We're just empty vessels. There's

  216. another scripture talks about being like empty vessels clanging gongs.

  217. But do you know what, when we're full of the

  218. Holy Spirit, we resound well, we sound good, we look good.

  219. People are drawn to us. You are the light of

  220. the world. The Holy Spirit is not just here to

  221. make us feel all ushy and goose bumpy. The Holy

  222. spirits here to make us dangerous to the darkness. We

  223. are the light of the world. What's the greatest enemy

  224. of darkness? Light? And it doesn't take much light. I've

  225. told many stories before now I've been caving. When I

  226. was younger, I sat in a dark cave and they

  227. told us to turn all the lights out, and we

  228. sat in there in the darkness, and then they said, okay,

  229. please cover your eyes, so We sat there for nearly

  230. twenty minutes in the dark, and you could hear the

  231. dripping water and everything else. And they said, please cover

  232. your eyes. And I covered my eyes, but not properly

  233. because I didn't listen to the instructor. And so when

  234. they turned one light on, just one light in this

  235. empty cave, it was ah and I couldn't see anything

  236. for nearly a further ten minutes. Whereas everybody else who've

  237. covered their eyes, who then just grew they gradually opened

  238. their fingers, became accustomed to the light. But because I

  239. hadn't listened to the instructors, I have my fingers like this.

  240. Because I was interested what is going I litch my

  241. eyes over reacted and therefore I couldn't see anything for

  242. I mean, they were ready to go long before me.

  243. I said, you have to wait. Sorry, I still can't

  244. see anything. You know, when you get dazzled by lights,

  245. it's the same with the good news. Sometimes we can

  246. dump everything on everybody and it's like dazzling. And sometimes

  247. how do you eat an elephant one mouthful at a time?

  248. As you go proclaim this message The Kingdom of Heaven

  249. is near, heal the sick, raise the Dad. That's what

  250. it says in the Gospel of Matthew. We're not just

  251. meant to explain the Kingdom, We're meant to demonstrate it.

  252. I can say I love you hundreds of times, but

  253. if i'm if I'm push you out of the way

  254. and buy you out of the way and my body

  255. language there's something different, then I'm not demonstrating the gospel.

  256. If we love people, we need to show it to

  257. We're a chosen people. It's not a mistake that you're here,

  258. and it's not a mistake that you're part of church

  259. one Peter two, verse nine. But you are a chosen people,

  260. a royal priesthood, a holy nation, his own special people

  261. that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called

  262. you out of darkness into his marvelous light. The world's

  263. needs a priesthood of believers, not just pastors, not just

  264. people who do the pulpit, but people who will speak

  265. in the hospital, people who will speak in your office,

  266. people who will speak in the factory. Because you're God's

  267. person in that place. You might look around and say me, God, me, Yeah,

  268. there's no one else. You're the person in the room

  269. right now, say what you want to say, share it

  270. with passion and power and see what God will do.

  271. It's not about personality. Some of us are quiet, some

  272. of us allowed. It's not about personality. It's about identity.

  273. We don't need a platform to make a difference. You

  274. don't have to stand here to make a difference. We

  275. have a privilege of broadcasting to the rest of the world,

  276. and it's great to connect with those who are joining

  277. with us from I mean, I saw people from South Africa,

  278. from Norway, from Spain. Buenos Dias, Gloria adios. That's the

  279. limit of my Spanish, by the way. So when should

  280. we do this? The time is now in Romans thirteen eleven.

  281. The hour has already come for you to wake up

  282. from your slumber into Timothy four to preach the word.

  283. Be prepared in season and out of season, Be prepared,

  284. be ready, whether you think it's required or not. Forgive

  285. me if you've heard me tell this story before now,

  286. but it changed my attitude to preparing for Sundays. My

  287. dad and my stepmom used to go to an Anglican

  288. church up in Wakefield, and I got to know Stephen,

  289. the vicar there very well, and I went up to

  290. their church for an away day of refreshing. I drove

  291. up on the Saturday morning and I said, I won't

  292. get there for the start. I'll get there for the

  293. coffee break, and I'll join you for the rest of

  294. the day. I knew Stephen pretty well. He's a bit

  295. of a joker from time to time. And I walked

  296. into the end of the first session just about five

  297. minutes before the coffee break, so I was on time,

  298. and he looked up and he points to me and says,

  299. I'm really glad we're about to take a break. But

  300. I'm really glad Dave's made it because he's going to

  301. be taking the next session. There had been no discussion

  302. about me doing anything at all, and Steven just said

  303. Dave's going to be and I just thought, did I

  304. miss an email? What did I do? Anyway? So what

  305. I didn't even go and check with him. I just

  306. went took to one side, got a cup of coffee,

  307. said hello to Dad and Maureen, and then went into

  308. a corner and just okay, God, you're going to have

  309. to give me something. And so I got some quick

  310. notes and wrote out some things on a post it note,

  311. and then came to the ready for the next session.

  312. After the coffee break, sat down. I said, Stephen said,

  313. I know I announced that Dave was going to be

  314. you in the next session, but I was just joking.

  315. What that taught me was never go anywhere without something.

  316. It's a lesson that happened decades ago now, but I

  317. never go anywhere. I was in Manor Cross School where

  318. we used to meet many years ago, and I was

  319. sitting in the front row. It's a special assembly with

  320. all the parents in there, and they'd been raising money

  321. for Water Aid and I was there, you know, as

  322. a local pastor, just to say a prayer as part

  323. of the as part of the assembly. There was three

  324. hundred parents, you know, hundreds of kids. It was a

  325. packed room. And the head mistress came up to me said, Dave,

  326. the lady from Water Aid's not going to be able

  327. to make it. Could you say something please about Water Aid?

  328. I know something about water Aid. So again frantic research

  329. into my phone got up. But I was ready because

  330. I'd already arrived, saying okay, if I need to share something,

  331. my heart was ready even though I had to do

  332. some research. So the time is now be ready In

  333. season and out season. It's a chiross hour. The harvest

  334. is ripe, the workers a few. Don't wait, don't hesitate,

  335. don't hold back. The gospel must be heard, The kingdom

  336. must be seen. The church we must arise. Now is

  337. the time for bold lions, not silent saints. Yeah, we

  338. can be a bystander in the Kingdom of God. But

  339. do you know what I believe? You and I are

  340. sent people. We are anointed and appointed and armed with fire.

  341. The power of God is not behind you, It's in you.

  342. The Gospel of Story is not something you tell, it's

  343. a fire that you carry. So rise up, ambassadors, speak

  344. up priests, heal the sick, preach the word, break the chains,

  345. and above all, never, never, never be ashamed of the gospel,

  346. for it's still the power of God unto salvation. So

  347. I'm done. That's what these cards are all about. I've

  348. quoted those four scriptures on that card. Take it away,

  349. use it as you want, put it in your pocket,

  350. put it in your briefcase. Maybe pray over it. So

  351. I'd want to pray about a couple of things. Let's

  352. close our eyes and I'm going to ask you whether

  353. you're listening at home, whether you're listening later, or whether

  354. you're in the room. There's three things I want to

  355. pray for. I want to pray for boldness. I want

  356. to pray for a calling for ambassadors. And I want

  357. to make an invitation for anyone who's not saved. So

  358. let me start with boldness. We know what we might do,

  359. but we just lack that umph, that sense of stepping out.

  360. If that's you, whether you're at home, whether you're listening

  361. later or in the room, would you stand where you

  362. are if you just need a fresh download of boldness today.

  363. A fresh boldness to talk to your colleagues at work,

  364. a fresh boldness to share with your family, a fresh

  365. boldness to be on the streets. Some of us are

  366. not on the streets because we are ashamed. But I

  367. want to encourage you be filled again with boldness. So

  368. for those people who are standing, I'm going to pray

  369. for you in a moment for fresh boldness to fall

  370. upon you. I'm not saying you might be bold in

  371. some places, in some seasons, in some locations, but not

  372. in others. So maybe you're just standing and saying, Lord,

  373. I need a boldness to be able to share with

  374. my spouse, with my children, with my boss. Maybe there's

  375. one particular area where you're saying I need boldness. Well,

  376. I want to pray that the Lord will fill you

  377. with his spirit and that will bring boldness. So Father,

  378. I pray for those who are standing, Lord, I pray

  379. the Lord. Lord, God, Lord, you'd fill us up with

  380. your spirit with no fresh boldness, and we take a

  381. step of faith easily in Jesus' name. Some of us

  382. are sitting on the sidelines. So you know, well, you're

  383. on the team. We're in the football team. We're in

  384. the sidelines. We know how to play the game in theory,

  385. but we're not on the pitch yet. I want to

  386. encourage you if you I sense there are a few

  387. people who just need to say, Lord, I want to

  388. be an ambassador for you. I don't feel worthy. There's

  389. things I've done that I shouldn't have done. Well, that's

  390. that's repentance. Just turn to God and say Lord, I'm sorry.

  391. Doesn't deny your validity as an ambassador. If you shouted

  392. at somebody who pulled out in front of you, it

  393. does not deny your worthiness. Just say sorry, Lord, maybe

  394. even say you know, give a repentance sign to the

  395. person who you're now shouting at. If you've been angry

  396. with someone, if you've hurt someone, just take a few

  397. moments to apologize, to redress, but don't allow it to

  398. take you off course, off path from being an ambassador

  399. for the King. I was literally just talking to Rue,

  400. who welcomed people in the door today, and she said,

  401. I've met the Key. I said really, She said yes,

  402. got invited to go to the royal show and I

  403. was there with some other people and I met the King. Wow.

  404. You know she was excited at the front door about

  405. meeting the King. We should be just as excited about

  406. meeting King Jesus and introducing other people to him. So,

  407. if you want a fresh sense of calling, if you

  408. want to step into being that ambassador for Christ, would

  409. you stand those at home, those listening later, would you

  410. stand now? So? Father, I pray the Lord you'd help

  411. us to be better ambassadors for you, help us to

  412. step out in faith and into our calling in Jesus name. Amen.

  413. And finally, as I read a couple of times, confess

  414. with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord, and believe

  415. in your heart that Jesus Christ is. Lord, maybe you've

  416. sensed in your heart I've heard what Dave's talking about.

  417. I don't know this Jesus Chap that Dave's talking about,

  418. but I want to know him better. I want to

  419. know who I am in him. Would you just raise

  420. your hand, Would you just lift up your hand and

  421. let me know. I'm just put it up. Thank you, Father, Father.

  422. I pray for those who are listening, for those who

  423. have been nudged Lord, towards you, Father, I pray that Lord,

  424. you'd whisper in their ear, speak more clearly to them,

  425. and let them know more about their place in your

  426. kingdom family. In Jesus's name, Amen, Thank you,
