  1. Good morning. It's good to see you all this morning.

  2. It's good to be back with you. If you have

  3. your Bible, it's turning with me. The Acts, Chapter nineteen,

  4. Acts Chapter nineteen, This morning will be in verse eight

  5. in just a minute, Acts Chapter eighteen. If you ever

  6. put your hope in something, thought, hey, this is gonna

  7. be a really good idea, this is really gonna work out,

  8. This is gonna really be good for me, and it

  9. could be a I don't know. It could be something

  10. you bought and you thought, man, this is gonna be

  11. a great car and it turned out to be a lemon, right,

  12. Or maybe you thought this was gonna be a really

  13. good meal and you go eat at Angelo's and you

  14. think it's gonna be great and it's really terrible, and

  15. you go. You have your hope and something that's supposed

  16. to be really good, and it turns out it just wasn't.

  17. It just didn't turn out. It just wasn't as good

  18. as you thought it was going to be. It really

  19. didn't provide for you what you thought it was going

  20. to provide. You're and you kind of maybe salt you

  21. see things too, like maybe crumbled pieces. There was a

  22. man in Pennsylvania. It's Pittsburgh. And there's a story about

  23. him and how he put his own in something and

  24. it really just felled right in front of his eyes.

  25. He really was desperate. He was desperate for money. We're

  26. not really sure why. He Maybe he had some credit

  27. card debt, maybe he owed money through some addictions, or

  28. maybe he had a gambling problem, who knows. But he

  29. hit a money problem. So he decided that he had

  30. an idea. He thought he would go into a grocery

  31. store and he would hand the cash resher, the lady

  32. at the cash thresher, a bill, and she would give

  33. him money back in return for that bill. And here's

  34. the thing. It was a counterfeit bill. He made it himself.

  35. He says, you know, I'll go in and I'll give

  36. her this counterfeit bill and she I said, I'll need change,

  37. and she'll give me change back, and then I'll have

  38. some money in return. So he started thinking about you know,

  39. he really needed a lot of money. He said, you know,

  40. I think I may maybe I won't do a ten

  41. dollar bill, maybe I won't do one hundred dollar bill.

  42. Maybe I'll won't do a thousand dollar bill. I tell

  43. you what, maybe I'll do a million dollar bill. See

  44. he made a counterfeit million dollar bill. He walked in,

  45. and you got to think about it. You know, if

  46. you think about his thought process, it kind of falls

  47. apart if you start thinking through it. You know, one,

  48. no average grocery store clerk has a million dollars worth

  49. of cash in her cash register. Number two, you know,

  50. there's no such thing as a million dollar bill, right.

  51. The largest bill that we have in our curtcy is

  52. one hundred dollar bill. And you also have to think, lastly,

  53. if he goes in and offers a million dollar bill

  54. to the lady at the cash treasure, it's probably gonna

  55. get a little bit of attention, if you imagine. And

  56. so he walks in and he he comes up and

  57. his hands are all sweaty, and he goes into the

  58. little supermarket I don't know what it was, what kind

  59. of grocery store, and he has all his hopes and

  60. he thinks, man, this is going to be it. This

  61. is my payday, this is what's gonna get me all

  62. out of try whatever trouble he was in. He walks

  63. in and he hands her the million dollar bill. When

  64. he bought a pack of gum or whatever it was

  65. that he bought, and he thought, man, this is it.

  66. I'm gonna be able to pay off that debt. I'm

  67. gonna be able to get all that I need. Maybe

  68. I'll pail my debts and I can buy me a

  69. nice house or car, whatever it may. The checkout clerk

  70. saw the counterfeit check. What does she do? She called

  71. the manager over. The manager confiscated his counterfeit bill and

  72. told him this a fake. He got angry. I mean,

  73. all these hopes were dashing me. He thought this was it,

  74. This was the way I was going to get out

  75. of trouble. And he got mad. He grabbed the cash

  76. resting machine and slammed it. The next thing you know,

  77. the police were there and arrested him and put him

  78. into custody. You know, it's a sad store, isn't it.

  79. Someone who puts so much hope into something that turned

  80. out to be a counterfeit turned out to be a fake,

  81. and as a result, everything that he had hope for,

  82. all his dreams that he had were gone. Today, as

  83. we go to this passage of scripture, we look at

  84. a passage where we see people. In this passage of scripture,

  85. are putting their hope and putting their trust into something

  86. that's not real. And in this passage we see that

  87. God wants us to put our hope, put our trust

  88. and the one who has true power, and that's God

  89. the Father. As we come to acts, it's been a

  90. few weeks since we've been here, and so just to

  91. remind you kind of where we are, Paul has finished

  92. his second missionary journey. And after we finished his second

  93. ministry minute his second missionary journey, he kind of goes

  94. back and he visits all the church in Galatia and Phrygia.

  95. And so after that who visits all the churches once again,

  96. he goes back to Ephesus and in Ephesis he spends

  97. three years in ministry in Ephesis. And so as we

  98. come to this passage of scripture, Luke is showing us

  99. what happens in Ephesus. And one of the things that

  100. Luke wants us in God's work, wants us to see

  101. in this morning's passage is the power of God that's

  102. at work in Ephesus. God's power is at work. God

  103. is moving in great power through Paul. But also God

  104. is working in great power in the lives of individuals

  105. and as a result, listen to this. This is very

  106. important when people encounter listen the real thing. When they

  107. encounter the real power of God, it changes their life.

  108. And we see lives individually transformed by the power of

  109. God in their life. And this morning, I hope that

  110. you will look today as we look today, and we

  111. see the transformational power of God in the lives of

  112. Paul and the laws and lives of individual I want

  113. you to think about today, what are you trusting in?

  114. And today? Are you trusting in a counterfeit that has

  115. no power like the man at the grocery store, or

  116. are you trusting in the power, the true power of

  117. God that's found in Jesus. Let's stand together and let's

  118. read God's word and today's the title of my sermon

  119. is God's power over the counterfeits. Today on the sea,

  120. walk us through and look through how God has power

  121. over the counterfeits verse chapter nineteen. Starting in verse eight,

  122. he says, and he entered the sin of God. And

  123. for three months he spoke both boldly, reasoning and persuading

  124. them about the Kingdom of God. But when some became

  125. stubborn and continued in unbeliefs, speaking evil of the way

  126. before the congregation. He withdrew from them, and he took

  127. in disciples with them and reasoned daily in the high

  128. hall of Tyrannius. This continued for two years, so that

  129. all the residents of Asia heard the word of the Lord,

  130. both Jews and Greeds versus lab it says. And God

  131. was doing extra extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul.

  132. So even the handkerchiefs and aprons that were touched his

  133. skin were carried away to the sick, and their disease

  134. left them, and the evil spirits came out of them.

  135. Then some of that Jewish exorcists undertook to invoke the

  136. name of the Lord Jesus over the evil spirit, saying,

  137. I adjourn you by Jesus, and whom Paul proclaims seven

  138. sons of Skeeva, I mean seven sons of Jewish high

  139. priests named Skiva. Sorry we're doing this. But the evil

  140. spirit answered them, Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize,

  141. But who are you? And the man in whom was

  142. the evil spirit leaped on them and mastered them all,

  143. mastered all of them and overpowered them, so they fled

  144. out of the house naked and wounded. And this became

  145. known to all the residents in Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks,

  146. and fear fell upon them all, and the name of

  147. the Lord Jesus was extolled. Also, many of those who

  148. were now believers came confessing, invulging their practices. And a

  149. number of those who practiced magic arts brought their books together,

  150. and they burned them the sight of all, and they

  151. counted the value of them, and found that they came

  152. to find fifty thousand pieces of silver. So that the

  153. word of the Lord continued and increase and prevailed mightily.

  154. Let's pray together, Father, we thank you Lord for your word. Today. God,

  155. we thank you Lord, that true power rest in you. God.

  156. And Lord, I pray that as we look at to

  157. your word today and we hear your word, Lord, may

  158. we see Lord your power. Lord, may we hear the

  159. power of your word. And God, I pray today we

  160. would rest and we were trust in that power. Lord.

  161. I pray Lord for this message. Lord, I pray that

  162. you would anoint me with not my words but yours. God.

  163. I am a desperate man and desperate need of your spirit.

  164. And so Lord, I pray that you would feel me,

  165. that you might pour me out. And Lord, the words

  166. that I would declare would be yours their Lord. Today,

  167. they don't need a message from me, They need a

  168. message from you. Lords. So I pray God, feel me,

  169. use me Lord today, may you meet with us, and

  170. may we know today as we leave this place, surely

  171. you've been in this place. Lord, We love you. We

  172. thank you Lord for today in your name, we pray

  173. Amen you maybe see the first we must recognize the power.

  174. God's power over counterfeits. Verse eight begins Paul. It tells

  175. us as Paul started his ministry in Ephesis. He begins

  176. it as he always does his pattern as he goes

  177. into every city. His pattern has to start his ministry

  178. with the Jews, and so he goes into the Jewish

  179. s and of God, and in verse eleven tells us

  180. that not only was he doing mighty work in Ephesus,

  181. but who was doing the mighty work. Verse eleven starts

  182. off by telling this is God. I think it's very

  183. important as we see later on Paul doing God doing

  184. miraculous things through Paul, and even his handkerchiefs are being carried.

  185. Luke wants you to see. God wants you to see

  186. from the very beginning, it wasn't Paul that had the power.

  187. It was God that had the power. It was God

  188. that was that work. And God was a working in Ephesus,

  189. and verse eleven tells us, and God was doing extra

  190. ordinary miracles by the hens of Paul. In verse twelve,

  191. it says, so even oh, I'm skipping down in verse eleven.

  192. Go back to verse nine. In verse nine, it tells

  193. us that Paul begins his ministry. He begins it, and

  194. this ind of God. And he spent there for three months,

  195. tells us. Tells the scripture tells us he he boldly

  196. reasons there he persuading them about the Kingdom of God.

  197. For three months. Paul goes into every Sabbath, every Saturday.

  198. He preached the word of God, just as his pattern

  199. is in every city. But scripture tells us in verse nine,

  200. how the Jews responded. But look at verse nine. But

  201. when some of this, but some became stubborn, it continued

  202. in unbelief. So Paul goes his pattern. He goes into Ephesus.

  203. He's only been there one time before, but a very

  204. short time. So he comes back. He promises me. He

  205. comes back. He comes back to Ephesus, and he does

  206. what he just said. Hey, I'm going to come back,

  207. and I want to share the Word of God. And

  208. he does that for three months and three months he preaches,

  209. he proclaims the gospel for three months, and for three

  210. months they were rejecting him. He's persistent in sharing the gospel.

  211. They were persistent in rejecting him. The Bible says, not

  212. only they become stubborn and they continue in unbelieve, but

  213. I also begins speaking evil of the way. It's interesting

  214. this term way is used and acts only, I think,

  215. maybe only in acts, maybe elsewhere to describe Christians. It's

  216. the idea that Christians are identified in the New Testament

  217. at times as the way, and it's built upon the

  218. idea that they understood the way to salvation. Jesus says,

  219. I am the way truth in the life. No one

  220. comes the Father but by Me. And so these Christians

  221. are identify the ones who believe that Jesus is the way,

  222. so they call them the way. They also believe that

  223. they are the way to the right relationship with God,

  224. so they're described that way. And the passage tells us

  225. that they reject Paul, but they also reject the Christians

  226. that are there. They speak evil of them. In Verse

  227. nine tells us that as was old, after continuing some

  228. time sharing the Gospel, Paul whidraws from them, and he

  229. draws of them when he takes disciples, and he goes

  230. into this hall called Tyrannius. Tyrannus was a Greek hall

  231. in that city. From every day from eleven to four o'clock,

  232. they would have open kind of public forums where guest

  233. speakers could come in and speak. So Paul goes in

  234. this this hall in the middle of the city, and

  235. he preaches the Gospel to everyone, Jews and Greeks. The

  236. scripture is showing that Paul is making a transition from

  237. sharing the gospel to the Jews. Now he's going to

  238. the Jews in the Greeks. He's trying to reach everybody

  239. in the city. And so he's speaking there daily in

  240. that and look what the Bible says, and he does,

  241. this scripture says in verse ten, for two years, and

  242. as a result of preaching the Gospel for two years

  243. in that city, everybody in the city, here's the Word

  244. of God. And not only they hear the word of God,

  245. but they see the power of God. And that's where

  246. I jumped up too far a minute ago. But in

  247. verse eleven, they see the power of God. The Bible

  248. says in verse eleven, and God was doing extraordinary miracles

  249. by the hands of Paul. So God was doing work.

  250. It wasn't like I said earlier. It wasn't Paul that

  251. was the power. Was not when Paul the power of

  252. God was. It was God who had the power. It

  253. was God who was giving power to Paul so much

  254. so that God was doing such an extra nernory work

  255. in Paul. That scripture tells us here that Paul had handkerchiefs,

  256. and people would get the handkerchiefs of Paul, and they

  257. would take the handkerchiefs to those who were sick and

  258. they would be healed. Some people would just Scripture describes

  259. aprons there. Aprons would touch Paul and they would be healed.

  260. People were seeing the power of God demonstrated in and

  261. through Paul. What's the purpose of miracles? We talked about this.

  262. Devin talked about this a few weeks ago. Miracles and

  263. signs and wonders and scripture are always used. What to

  264. authenticate someone or something is from God. And so as God,

  265. as Paul is proclaiming the Gospel to a unbelieving, unrech

  266. people group who do not know about Jesus. It's the

  267. miracles were showing that this man is truly sent by

  268. God and his messages from God. So it's leading people

  269. to believe and to be drawn to salvation in Jesus.

  270. And so we see the power of God. But I

  271. want you to see something else happens in this past

  272. of scripture. For every time God demonstrates his power, listen,

  273. Satan wants to create a counterfeit in this time Ephesis.

  274. I think something you need to know about Ephesus. Ephesus

  275. was the center of the occault at the time, and

  276. as a result, in the middle of this town they

  277. would there was a statue in a card Artemis was

  278. the statue, and then this in this statue in the city,

  279. these people would would would take spells and they would

  280. make spells and magic spells, and they would take symbols

  281. of the statue and make spells from that statue. They

  282. had books where they would have spells and incantations where

  283. they would offer these. There's magicians all over the city

  284. that would offer cures or blessings or spells to help

  285. heal people. You paid them money and they will give

  286. you spell or they would give you some type of

  287. ointment or whatever to help cure you of your diseases.

  288. And that's the middle of where Paul is at this time.

  289. So listen, understand, for every demonstration of God's power, Satan

  290. creates a counterfeit. So in this past of scripture we

  291. see Satan tries to create a counterfeit from what God

  292. was doing in Paul loqu at what says here and

  293. then verse thirteen. And then some of the itinerant Jewish

  294. exorcists understood and invoke the name of the Lord Jesus

  295. to those who had evil spirits. We understand that we

  296. have history would tell us that they would take these

  297. spells and they would make these incantations or something, and

  298. we know there's priests who would be responsible for casting

  299. out demons. Was believed that if you would declare something

  300. that had power, that gave you power over what you

  301. were speaking against. Because the Jews saw the power that

  302. was then Paul, they said, you know what, we may

  303. need a little bit of that power. You know, this

  304. is really bad demon in this man. And you know

  305. we've asked to done a few exorcism in and what

  306. we've done in the past that work. So you know what,

  307. Paul's many in the city. I hear about this Paul

  308. and they're taking his handkerchiefs and people are being healed.

  309. Maybe I should maybe, and he does in the name

  310. of Jesus, and maybe and when I do my spell,

  311. I'll add a little Jesus to the spell. I'll add

  312. a little Paul to the spell, and then maybe that

  313. gives me a little bit more power that my spell

  314. might work. And so that's what happens. These Jewish priests

  315. go in and again it's a counterfeit is a demon

  316. possessed man, and they would declare the name of Paul

  317. or Jesus to maybe help their spell. We understand this.

  318. We actually have writings that were found in Paris in

  319. Rome from this time, and in these papers that we

  320. have or these magic spells of that we have collections

  321. we found in Rome. You hear these terms that they

  322. would do this and their spells they would say Abraham.

  323. They would use the term of Abraham when spell reads

  324. I adjourned thee by Jesus. The God of the Hebrews,

  325. and the other one says held God of Abraham, held

  326. God of Isaac, held God of Jacob, health Jesus, the

  327. Holy Spirit, God the Father. So people would use these spells,

  328. and these high priests were using that, and that added

  329. in the name of Jesus. Listen with every time you

  330. see the power of God, you see Satan tries to

  331. create a counterfeit. Can I understand? Can I lead you

  332. today as we look at the word of God today? Listen,

  333. God wants you to recognize the day that true power

  334. comes only from Him. There's nothing in this world today. Listen,

  335. there's nothing in this world today. This this world tries

  336. to offer you. That's the imitation of the real thing

  337. that there and there's no power in it. Let me

  338. give you an example of that, of the one thing

  339. that our world has done today that's made a counterfeit

  340. of something that God's created. Once you turned with me

  341. to Genesis Genesis chapter nine, Genesis chapter nine, verse eight.

  342. In Genesis chapter nine, verse eight, God speaks to a

  343. man and his name's Noah. You know what he says

  344. to no I want you to read that. I want

  345. to read this with you. Love hearing the turning of

  346. the pages of scripture Genesis, chapter nine, verse eight, it says,

  347. then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, behold,

  348. I establish my covenant with you and your offspring after you,

  349. with every living creature that's within you, the birds, the livestock,

  350. every beast of the earth with you, as many as

  351. many as came out of the arc. For every beast

  352. of the earth, I established my covenant with you that

  353. never again shall I shall all flesh be cut off

  354. by the waters of flood. Never again shall there be

  355. a flood to destroy the earth. And God said, listen this.

  356. This is a sign of the covenant that I make

  357. between me and you and every living creature that is

  358. with you. For listen to this for all future generations.

  359. I set my bow in the clouds, that it shall

  360. be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.

  361. When I bring clouds of the earth and a bow

  362. is seen in the clouds, I remember my covenant that

  363. is between me and you and every living creature of

  364. all flesh, and the water shall never become a flood

  365. to destroy the earth. And when the bow is in

  366. the clouds, and when I see it I remember the

  367. everlasting covenant between God and every living creature that is

  368. on the flesh of the earth. Listen, the Bible says,

  369. as we look upon the rainbow today on our backdrop,

  370. the Bible says, every time that God puts the rainbow

  371. in the sky, you should see it and you should

  372. recognize the power of God. You should see the power

  373. of God to judge every living creature on this earth.

  374. You know, when God brought the flood upon the earth,

  375. every living creature, man and creature was killed except those

  376. were on the mark on the ark. Not only when

  377. we see the rainbow we should see God's power over

  378. all creation to judge, but we also should be reminded

  379. of God's power to save. You see God providing an

  380. arc that man and woman might be saved from the

  381. judgment of God. So when God puts this the rainbow

  382. into the sky, we should see rememember the power of

  383. God to judge all creature. We all should see God's

  384. power to save all mankind. All those who trust in

  385. Him can be saved. Right, and we also should remember

  386. every time we see the sign of the rainbow, we

  387. should remember that God made a covenant with man. God

  388. made a covenant with man, and yet our world, world

  389. has taken the rainbow and has made it a counterfeit.

  390. And when you see the rainbow today, maybe even when

  391. you came in the room, you saw the rainbow and

  392. you said, oh, there's a rainbow in the church. What

  393. have we done as a church? Went crazy? And it's

  394. sad that we've come to that place when something that

  395. God created to be a sign of his power and

  396. his power to judge and his power to save our

  397. world is taken to make a counterfeit to where we

  398. think about something that is a simple practice of homosexuality

  399. that's totally against what God's words created a husband and

  400. a man and a woman for marriage, for life, and

  401. a world's twisted the rainbow and made it a sign

  402. of the evil practice of homosexuality. God creates, and God

  403. is powerful, and we should be reminded of God's power,

  404. but we should recognize that the enemy. And listen, I

  405. don't put that forgive me, I said some thing rolling again,

  406. I said, our world has made it into Let me

  407. put let me put the emphasis on the emphasis. Who

  408. should get the credit from making the rainbow what it

  409. is today? It's not just our world it is the

  410. prince of our world, and that Satan himself has made

  411. it into a counterfeit. So listen today we should recognize

  412. every time we see the power of God demonstrated, Satan

  413. will create a counterfeit, and there is a temptation. Listen

  414. your naive to think about today. It won't happen to me, preacher. No, no, no, no,

  415. I believe in the power of God. I'll never fall

  416. from the counterfeit. No, you shouldn't be that naive. Listen,

  417. Satan creates this counterfeit to draw you away from God.

  418. Listen to this. Bible says in Deuteronomy, I'm skipping ahead,

  419. but I want you to see this a Deuteronomy thirteen,

  420. verse one. Listen to this. Oh, this is so good.

  421. If a prophet or a dreamer dreams among you, it

  422. gives you a sign of wonder or a sign of wonder.

  423. He tells you will come to pass. He says, let

  424. us go after other gods which you have not known,

  425. and let's serve them. You should not listen to words

  426. of the prophet of their dreamer of dreams. For Lord,

  427. your God is testing you to know the whether you

  428. love God with all your heart with all your soul,

  429. or with all your strength, and with all your heart,

  430. with all your soul, listen. The Bible says that God

  431. brings up the dreamers and the people who will give

  432. a counterfeit, why to test you, to see whether you'll

  433. trust in the truth God, or whether you're going to

  434. trust in the counterfeit. We must recognize today, listen, that

  435. God has power over all counterfeits. Secondly, I want you

  436. to understand. We must see today that we must recognize

  437. the danger of the counterfeits. The Bible says in this

  438. passage of scripture, verse thirteen, that some of the itinerant

  439. Jewish exorcists undertook the name of the Lord Jesus over

  440. those who had evil spirits, and they said, I adjourn

  441. you by Jesus, and whom Paul proclaims seven sons of

  442. seven sons of Jewish high priests named Skiva. We're doing this.

  443. But the evil spirit answered them and says, I know, Jesus,

  444. I know, and Paul, I recognize, But who are you?

  445. And the man in whom was the evil spirit lead

  446. on them and mastered them all and overpowered them. So

  447. they fled out of the house naked and wounded Scriptures

  448. tells us that this was a practice that was happening

  449. among Ephesus, that there are people all over the city

  450. that we're using this practices doing magic spells, and they

  451. were had in Jesus and Paul and different priests were

  452. doing that. And sevenly there's these seven sons of the

  453. High Priests, high priests, by the way, we're seeing us

  454. having more power than anybody in the community, because they

  455. were the high priests of the Jews. So here's this man.

  456. He has a demon possessed, a demon possessed man. And

  457. some said, well, we need to get we need to

  458. heal this man from demon possession. So they call these

  459. seven sons of schemers, seven sons of the High Priests. We'll

  460. bring them men. They're mighty men of God, and surely

  461. they'll be able to cast out this demon. And they

  462. go in there, and they've heard the other priests that

  463. we're using the name of Jesus and using the name

  464. of Paul. So they go in and the demon possessed

  465. man's there, and they try to cast it out, and

  466. they say by the name of Jesus, by the name

  467. of Paul, and the demon speaks says to them, Jesus,

  468. I know, Paul, I've heard of who are you? So

  469. here's the thing. They come across as what we've got

  470. the power of God. We have God. But what we

  471. reality see is there's no power in them. They're empty,

  472. They're a fake. And as a result, the Bible says,

  473. the demon jumps on them. Say listen. They wanted to

  474. use the power of Jesus name. They wanted to use

  475. that evil counterfeit to what have power over something, And

  476. they realized in that moment they had no power. But

  477. listen to this. The evil is what had power over them.

  478. The demon jumped upon them, beat them, all seven of them.

  479. That was a bad demon. They fled out of the

  480. house naked. Being naked, there was a sound of humiliation.

  481. They were physically and emotionally humiliated. Why because they were

  482. trusting in the counterfeit. They were trying to find hope

  483. in the counterfeit. They're like the man at the grocery store. Man,

  484. I think this is really hope here, This is really

  485. what made me happy. This will really make me fulfilled

  486. in my life if I really trusting this counterfeit. Only

  487. to realize leaving that day, they were humiliated and they

  488. were hopeless because there was no power in the counterfeit.

  489. We must recognize today that brothers and sisters, we must

  490. recognize the dangers of the counterfeits. Number one, counterfeits have

  491. no power. You know, this world will try to tease

  492. you and lead you. Satan will try to tease you

  493. and lead you to put your hope in something of

  494. this world, and to that it will bring you happiness,

  495. It'll give you some power, It'll bring you some type

  496. of fulfillment. Reality is, there is no power in it.

  497. Never forget. One time Brandy and I were in a

  498. suny school class, a young couple's sons school class, and

  499. there was a man in there and he said, I'll

  500. tell you what, I'd be a better man of God

  501. if I wanted a lottery. Yes, I would be. I'd

  502. love God more if I wanted a lottery. I was

  503. like what he said, Yeah, if I want a lottery,

  504. I would have to go to work so I could

  505. just sit at home and read my Bible all day long.

  506. And we laugh at that, But what is he thinking.

  507. He's thinking the counterfeit of winning the lottery is what's

  508. going to make me happy. There's power in money. There's

  509. fulfillment and money, and if I get money, then I'll

  510. have more of God and said, God, I've got you

  511. and that's all I need in this world. But we

  512. believe that and we'll follow into that. You say, not, well,

  513. you brought a lot of ar tickut lately someby said no, no, no,

  514. you have it. But there's some of you have. What

  515. are you thinking? What are you trusting in? Well? This,

  516. if I win this, this scratch off, it's sure gonna

  517. make me happy. It's sure gonna help me with this. Now,

  518. there's no power in the counterfeits. There's no power in

  519. the counterfeits. Secondly, counterfeits do nothing but cause harm. You know,

  520. here's this, these these priests and they come and they

  521. think they have power in this, that come to find

  522. out that the evil has power over them and the

  523. evil is harming them. Not only do many times we

  524. realize there's danger in counterfeits that have no power, but

  525. we also must realize there's danger in the counterfeits, that

  526. what they're doing to us is really harming us. They're

  527. not helping us. All right, Tell you of a church

  528. in northern California. They have church services they have church signed,

  529. they have a cross in their church, they read the Bible,

  530. have Sunday morning service. They look like the church. They

  531. sound like the church. They have a name of a church.

  532. You want the name of the church is United Cannabis Ministry.

  533. It's the marijuana Church. Yep. God made the grass and

  534. blessed it a man. So they believe in smoking and

  535. in church and that's going to make them happy. And

  536. we laugh at that, right, we think that's crazy. Okay,

  537. can you believe a church it's a cannabis church and

  538. they're having Sunday morning service and maybe they're rolling up.

  539. I don't know what they're doing in there, but I

  540. can tell you today it's a counterfeit. It's a fake

  541. and there's people who can you imagine? Can you imagine

  542. being a member of that? And you're thinking, man, this

  543. is great, we're happy. Everybody's happy. But only to realize

  544. there's no power. Only even realize one day there's no hope.

  545. There's no hope. And I tell you that and we

  546. laugh and we have a good time about that. But

  547. in reality, and many times we do the same thing.

  548. Now we don't have a cannabis church here, but that's

  549. a praise the Lord. But we'll read a horoscope and said,

  550. Oh God, maybe this will be it for me, Maybe

  551. this will be a good week for me. Or God,

  552. I'm gonna watch that movie. And God, I know that

  553. doesn't honor you, but maybe it just gives me a

  554. temporary It'll make me feel good a little bit. I'll

  555. enjoy what I get to watch for a little bit.

  556. Or maybe I'll look at something on the internet I

  557. shouldn't watch, and I'll give me a temporary satisfaction. And

  558. I know, God, you designed marriage between the men and woman,

  559. and pornography is not the answer to section reality, I mean,

  560. not the answer for my needs that God gave me.

  561. But it'll give me a temporary satisfaction. And then later on, God,

  562. Oh bless me come to church and God, I'll give

  563. you praise. And God, I'm gonna do that little scratch

  564. off today. Lord, and you know where I need finances

  565. and you know my struggling right now. God, I know

  566. you're not really happy that. God. Maybe just maybe maybe

  567. this one time I'll win and I'll get a little bit.

  568. Or God, I I know I'm not really given you

  569. an honor by going to partying on Saturday night night

  570. or Friday night, and then come on Sunday morning, I

  571. lift up my hands and praise you like I love you,

  572. and sir you, Oh God, I need you to bless

  573. my life. But God, this little pet sin I have

  574. in my life, it's really not that bad of a problem.

  575. It's really not hurting me. It's really just give me

  576. a little temporary satisfaction. And listen when we're doing that,

  577. we're no different than the Cannabis Church. We're coming here

  578. on Sunday morning and we're at and like we love God.

  579. And on Monday through Friday, we've got our little, our

  580. little counterfeit that we're nurturing, trying to find hope in

  581. something that has no power, and really it is tearing

  582. us apart. What you see. Lastly, as we finish up

  583. this morning, we must recognize the cost of repentance. I

  584. want you to see this. I think it's so so

  585. important to see in this passage Scripture again, Scripture wants

  586. you to see the power of God. And when people

  587. experience the power of God, it transforms their life. People

  588. see the power of God. Satan creates a counterfeit, and

  589. when people see the power of God, and how there's

  590. no power in the counterfeit, and how it's doing nothing

  591. but harming them. What do they do? They repent? The

  592. Bible says in this pastor of Scripture, look at look

  593. with me, and the man in whom was evil spirits

  594. leaped on them and mastered them all and overpowered them,

  595. so they flat out of the house, naked and wounded.

  596. What happened? Everybody hears about that in the city. It

  597. scares them, It really does. Scripture tells us that in

  598. verse seventeen, and this became known to all the residents

  599. and Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks, and listened to this,

  600. and fear fell upon them all. You know what happened? Man,

  601. They heard about what the demons did to those guys,

  602. and there were some Listen, look what happens in the

  603. next verse. I'm about to get ahead of myself. I'm

  604. getting excited. Verse eighteen says also many of those were

  605. now believers came confessing and divulging their practices. You know

  606. what happened. People start hearing about it. Here's people in

  607. the church that had magic books in the house. They

  608. were doing some of the same stuff that other people

  609. were doing. They were worshiped cheese upon Sunday and had

  610. their little counterfeit at home. They started realizing, you know what,

  611. there's no power in this, and this is actually hurting me.

  612. And the Bible says, listen, look what happens those believers

  613. in the church they were pent. Look what happens. Verse

  614. eighteen says, and verse seventeens that became known all the residents,

  615. Virtues and Greece, and fear fell upon them all, and

  616. the name of the Lord was extold. And me of

  617. those are believers now came confessing their vulging their practices.

  618. And listen verse nineteen, and the number of those who

  619. practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them

  620. in the sight of all. Listen, there's repentance. There's confession too.

  621. Some came up and says, you know what I need

  622. to confess. You not know it. People in the church

  623. didn't know it. But I've got my magic books at home,

  624. I got my counterfeit at home. Enough's enough. I'm tired

  625. of what it's doing in my life, and there's no

  626. power in it. I want the power of God. I

  627. don't want the counterfeit anymore. And that came in the

  628. Confessor's sins before one another. Some took their magic books

  629. and they brought them to the church, and together the

  630. Bible says they burned the books together. These are church

  631. members who were holding on to the counterfeits. Listen, we

  632. must recognize the costs of repentance. There's times that word

  633. for us. Listen, we need to be honest with ourselves

  634. that the pet sins need to go away. The things

  635. that we're hiding from everyone, maybe in this room, or

  636. hiding from your family members that you know that are

  637. our counterfeit, are not honoring God and are doing nothing

  638. about hurting you and hurting your family. Let's not be

  639. on it. Let's not be naive people. Many times we

  640. think that my sin is only hurting me. No, it's not.

  641. It's hurting you. It's hurting your family. And listen, it's

  642. hurting this church. And you need to say, there's no

  643. power in it. It's doing nothing but harm. And there's

  644. come to a place that I need to confess and

  645. I need to repent. So it clues confessing. I tell

  646. you one of the most powerful services I have ever

  647. remembered my entire life. Sunday evening that first Baptist Indian Trail,

  648. we had a Sunday evening service, about a thousand people there.

  649. We had a normal church service that had music and

  650. the pastor spoke. And then suddenly something happened I'd never

  651. seen before. A woman comes up to the pulpit and

  652. she has a prepaired piece of paper and she begins reading,

  653. and then that she begins confessing. She comes telling everybody

  654. that unknowing to all of them, unknown to me, she's

  655. been having an affair. She tells about how she thought

  656. that the affair would be better than her marriage. She

  657. confessed how she believed to lie. She confessed how she'd

  658. been going to church and acting like everything was okay.

  659. And there before that church that day she asked the

  660. Lord to forgive her, and she asked the church to

  661. forgive her. I tell you it was one of the

  662. most powerful things I've ever seen in my life of

  663. the spirit of God moving in that place. When people

  664. just said, Hey, I no longer wanting to play the games,

  665. I'm honestly saying, I need to confess with this, this

  666. needs to get out of my life. I think. Secondly,

  667. here we see that their sacrifice when you when you

  668. recognize your need for repentance. When we recognize our need

  669. for repentance, it only costs us confession, but it also

  670. cost us sacrifice. The Bible says that they took their

  671. books and they brought them together, and they burned them,

  672. and they burned them for this would be thousands upon

  673. thousands of dollars today. It would have been like thirty

  674. five thousand dollars in today's value. It cost them something.

  675. I remember one time we had some friends in high

  676. school and we were, you know, listening to some music

  677. we shouldn't listen to, and and God was really working

  678. on our hearts about you know, just really like saying,

  679. you know, there's some there's some things that are just

  680. not good for me, and music is one of those.

  681. And we were in the car one day and he

  682. had a little suv and back then we had tapes.

  683. I know, y'all don't know what tapes are, but they're

  684. about this big. And he had tapes and he had

  685. hitten them in his back like different places in his

  686. car because he didn't want us to find them. We were

  687. going down the road and he looked at him and

  688. he found one of I forgot what it was some taping.

  689. He lily says, what is this? You say you're a

  690. man of God, you're listening to this mess he came

  691. to He said, you need to get rid of you

  692. need to purg yourself from evil. He said, I'll get

  693. rid of it. He got excited, he k need got what.

  694. He started throwing them out the window, you know, he said.

  695. We just started handing him tapes, you know, and they

  696. were just going out in the window. I tell you

  697. all that because it cost him something. It cost them something.

  698. And listen, when you confess your sins and when you

  699. get rid of some things in your life, it's going

  700. to cost you something. It may cost you shame. And

  701. you confessing to someone that you know that doesn't know

  702. what's happening in your life, it may cost you shame.

  703. It also may cost you some time. It may cost

  704. you saying, you know what, there's some things in my life.

  705. There's some friends I'm like to separate because there's some

  706. friends who are at tempting to me, leading me into

  707. some things I don't. So there's gonna be some costs

  708. from relationships. It's me cost I'm not going to go

  709. to certain places I used to go to with some

  710. of my friends, and they may look at me crazy,

  711. like I got three heads. But listening God is more

  712. valuable than anything that's going to cost me. See this

  713. passage of scripture. We must recognize the cost of repentance.

  714. I ask you today, we look at this passive scripture,

  715. we see the power of God. You want that power?

  716. Do you want it more than the counterfeit? Will you

  717. say today, God? I want your power in me. Will

  718. you say today, Lord, I'm tired of trusting in the fake.

  719. I don't want to fac you anymore. God, I want

  720. the real thing. I want you Jesus and Lord, that

  721. means I'm willing to repent. I'm willing to capass there's

  722. something in my life I need to I want to

  723. need to confess of and I need to get rid of.

  724. And I know it's going to cost me for for it.

  725. My Lord, You're more, You're worthy, and I want more

  726. of you. Jesus who asked the band to make their way.

  727. You know, you ever met somebody and you say, you

  728. know what that they just like they got it all together.

  729. I remember we were I was pastoring a church or

  730. at a church in rock Hill, and there was a

  731. guy there, and I mean he just he looked like

  732. he had it all together. Successful businessman. He was a

  733. cook at a very upscale restaurant, and and that in Charlotte.

  734. He was a deacon, served in our church very faithfully.

  735. He had a godly wife. His wife for it. That's

  736. Sara Merytrand's purse. That had children, very faithful to church,

  737. that were there every time the doors were open. Looking

  738. at them, you thought, man, he's got it all together.

  739. Everything's going well for him. It's godly man, godly wife,

  740. godly family. We got news one week that he was arrested. Arrested,

  741. not such and such. I mean, he's a deacon, he's

  742. faithful to the church, he's a coly wife, had his children,

  743. seems to be a faithful man. He was arrested for

  744. a child pornography. We realized that day. Listen, listen to me.

  745. He was the counterfeit. I wonder today, as we've we

  746. closed today, some of you are trusting in the counterfeit,

  747. and then some of you are the counterfeit. You come

  748. in here and you act like you really know the Lord.

  749. You act like you've got it all together, but you

  750. never put your faith in the Lord Jesus to forgive

  751. you your sins and surrender your life to him. Today,

  752. maybe it's a day say no more playing games with God,

  753. no more acting like I'm one way and my heart's

  754. not right with him. Today I want to have the

  755. real thing and I want God to cleanse me, forgive

  756. me and my sins, and make me new again. We

  757. stand with me. Let's pray. Lord. I love you. I

  758. thank you Lord for your word. God. I thank you

  759. that today Lord, it was by your power, Lord that

  760. you change lives. And God, I pray today as we

  761. seek you in this time of invitation. Lord, is not

  762. by my power, it's not by my might, it's not

  763. by my words. God, it's by your power. It's by

  764. your word that you transform lives. And Lord, I pray today, Lord,

  765. for your transformational power to work in the lives of

  766. your people there in this room. Today, Lord, I pray

  767. that there would be those who would render Lord to

  768. your work and their life. Today. I pray they'd be

  769. those who would confess Lord to you their counterfeit practices,

  770. things that they're trusting in that doesn't bring you honor

  771. and glory in their lives. Secret sins. Lord, Today, I

  772. pray they'd be those who would confess their sins before you.

  773. I pray they'd be those that would repent and come

  774. to you, Lord or today, may your power move in us. Oh,

  775. I pray for someone who doesn't know you as Lord

  776. and savior. And today they may have come here and

  777. been coming here for a while, but they've never ever

  778. put their trust in you. They are the counterfeit today, Lord,

  779. May they know the true thing. May they know the

  780. real power in you, Jesus, How you can forgive them

  781. of their sins, save them today and have a relationship

  782. with them starting today. I pray they'd be those who

  783. would put their trust in you for salvation today. Lord,

  784. however you lead us in this time, Lord, may we

  785. surrender it to you in your name, we pray, Amen,

  786. Jesus two
