  1. Before I get into the word, I just want to

  2. kind of lay a bit of a foundation, because how

  3. can I put this? Okay, it's been a week of

  4. roller coaster rides, highs and lows and lots of stuff

  5. going on, and our banner disappeared, the banner that's been

  6. out on the road. We paid the council to put

  7. the banner up officially, so we did it all properly.

  8. We put it out for six weeks, and somewhere in

  9. the week it disappeared. We just sung some words there

  10. what the enemy meant for evil will turned for good?

  11. So I just did what I don't know what you do.

  12. I reached out to a couple of people, do there

  13. anybody know where it's gone? Somebody taking it down? Couldn't

  14. find anybody, So I went on too social media and

  15. posted it on all the local social media with the banner,

  16. a picture of the bat. Has anybody seen this? And

  17. then I realized, Okay, I don't know how many hundreds

  18. of people might have seen the banner if it had

  19. been out there physically. We he's just been posted to

  20. about four twenty five thousand people. I just thought, come on, god,

  21. what the enemy meant for? Evil will turn for good,

  22. will turn for good. We've been looking at a journey

  23. this week, this month, sorry, as we head towards the

  24. end of September. We've been looking at a journey of

  25. being students of the king. Who's the king. The king

  26. is Jesus, not Charles, King Jesus. Many of you have

  27. worked in different places, and you will have a boss

  28. at work. There have been times in my life when

  29. my boss has told me what to do, and there

  30. are other times when he doesn't know what's going on.

  31. Because my boss, Jesus has told me what I need

  32. to do, and sometimes they've aligned, sometimes they haven't. But

  33. you know what, when God's at work, he wants to

  34. touch us, move us, and change us. Matthew Chapter five,

  35. verses thirteen to sixteen, As I talk about shining and

  36. slightly that you are the salt of the earth. But

  37. if salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned?

  38. If then good for nothing but to be thrown out

  39. and trampled under foot by men. You are the light

  40. of the world. A city cannot is set on a hill,

  41. cannot be hidden. Nor do you light a lamp and

  42. put it under a basket. But on a lamp stand,

  43. and it gives light to all of those who are

  44. in the house. Let your light shine before men, that

  45. they may see your good works and glorify your Father

  46. in heaven. I believe God wants to encourage us today

  47. to shine like Christ in the world. Jesus encourages disciples

  48. to be salt and light. One of the things about salt,

  49. If salt stays in a pot, it doesn't do anything.

  50. In fact, it goes crusty and hard and becomes useless.

  51. You know, for salt to perform its function, it needs

  52. to be rubbed up. Remember I'm not a cook, so

  53. please don't take any cooking advice from me here at all.

  54. Juli is to cook in our household. But what I

  55. do know is if you want to flavor at steak,

  56. you've got to put salt on it. The salt has

  57. to hit the food. If you want to cook vegetables,

  58. you know, and want to get some flavor out of there,

  59. and you're going to put some salt in there. And

  60. I know we're not meant to have too much salt,

  61. but we're meant to have just enough salt to bring

  62. out the best flavor in the good ingredients that we

  63. have and so we have. That's what that illustrates to

  64. me is we need to get close to people to

  65. be salt to the world, to be light, we've got

  66. to lift the lamp up. You know why are lights

  67. in ceilings. They're in ceilings so they shine upon us.

  68. If you have if you put a torch on the floor,

  69. it's no good to you at all. Really, it creates

  70. a little bit of light. So we're going to explore

  71. today what it means to be Christ's followers, to find

  72. salvation and to outwork grace in our lives. Christ Followers

  73. are people of the Word. Colossians three sixteen says, let

  74. the Word of Christ dwell in you richly, in all wisdom,

  75. teaching and amnishing one another, in psalms, hymns, spiritual songs,

  76. singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. One

  77. of the things I want you to notice in a

  78. number of scriptures as we journey through today is the

  79. word grace appears again and again and again. Grace is

  80. a precious thing. God's grace towards us. Man shall not

  81. live by bread alone. There have been times even this

  82. week when I've eaten very little and I've felt full.

  83. Have you ever done that? And there's other times when

  84. I've had a full meal. In fact, it happened to

  85. Cherris yesterday. Chris had a full meal yesterday and then

  86. she said, I'm still hungry. It's true, is Nick Harris? Yeah,

  87. you said I'm still hungry? Yeah, just embarrassing. How that's all? Yeah?

  88. But do you know what Something that sustains us, that

  89. fills us is his word. Think about the last time

  90. you ran a race, a race where maybe you ran

  91. out of energy, or you were trying to do something

  92. and you pushed into trying to finish. Well, you ran

  93. out of energy, you ran out of passion, you ran

  94. out of something. What carried you over the finish line

  95. was probably a word. Somebody encouraged you, somebody said you're

  96. going to finish. You're going to do it. I sense

  97. the Father says to you and to me, you're going

  98. to do it, pressing hold on, hang on in there.

  99. We need to shape our worldview. We need to shape

  100. our worldview in line with this book, the Bible, the

  101. guideline for us. I would encourage you to begin your

  102. day with the word, end your day with the word. Now,

  103. there's a challenge here. I know Julia says to me,

  104. screens late at night not a good thing, you know.

  105. I know that's meant to be kind of good for

  106. us to get away from screens. But so many of

  107. us now our Bible is on our phone. And so

  108. if I said to you read the word last thing

  109. at night, I'm encouraging you well print something out, read

  110. something of God's word, get away from the screen, because

  111. the word will sustain us. Christ's followers are filled with

  112. his spirit, not getting drunk, as we read in Ephesians five,

  113. verse eighteen, do not get drunk with wine. Do not

  114. get drunk with wine. In fact, I think this was

  115. a story from last term. Am I allowed to tell

  116. this story? Kerris? I think there was a group of students,

  117. some of you were there, and you are having fun

  118. late at night. I think it was a Thursday night, possibly,

  119. I can't remember the night, Carris toy and the security

  120. guard came around and said, what's going on here? And

  121. then he came in and he said, there's no alcohol.

  122. You're making such a noise and you seem to be

  123. having such fun and there's no drugs. What's going on here?

  124. It's God it's God at work. He's Holy Spirit. Yeah.

  125. I want to encourage you to live out reality. Now

  126. what does it mean to live out reality? Let's have

  127. joy in our hearts when we need joy. Let's have

  128. power in our bodies. Let's have a boldness in us.

  129. Let's see the gifts of the Spirit released to us

  130. and through us and to the body of Christ. Let

  131. me encourage you. I'm going to throw some little notices

  132. in my sermon this morning because I just think, you know,

  133. most of you don't know who we are, and you

  134. know it's all a bit new. You saw a worship

  135. team up here this morning, very multicultural worship team. I

  136. look at you and think of wow, this is going

  137. to be a glimpse of heaven. You know. The more

  138. national is one of the reasons we put the flags

  139. up every Sunday. Is number one, we make this space

  140. our own. But number two, we say, look at all

  141. the kind of countries we've touched in some way or other,

  142. and if your flag is not up, let Robert the

  143. back know and we'll sort that flag out because we

  144. touched another nation. There's even a flag of Greece directly

  145. behind you, Anna, right behind you. I'm looking straight at you.

  146. You know, wow, that what that's coincidence? So welcome no

  147. God's incidents in Jesus, as the early Church met. We

  148. read in Acts chapter one, you will receive power when

  149. the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you shall be

  150. witnesses to me in Jerusalem and in all Judea and

  151. Samaria and to the ends of the earth. Now why

  152. do we need power? You know, we meet stuff, we

  153. meet situations. We need wisdom, we need energy, we need passion,

  154. We need the power of God's Holy Spirit in us

  155. to be able to discern. Sometimes somebody will come to

  156. you and say I need an answer, and you'll think,

  157. I don't have the answer, but we'll ask God for

  158. the answer. And so when we need God's Holy Spirit,

  159. and that's every day, every day, why do we need

  160. the power of the Holy Spirit to be witnesses? Witnesses

  161. have seen something. You know, you are not called to

  162. a trial to give a testimony to say something. If

  163. you haven't seen anything, you can't say, well, I didn't

  164. see the accident, I didn't know why you're not a

  165. witness to that particular court event. So we need to

  166. be witness if we're going to be witnesses where well, okay,

  167. maybe you're not going to go to Jerusalem and Samaria.

  168. Just want to bring it back up again, I could.

  169. Maybe you just want to go don't want to go

  170. to Judea Samaria, Well, okay, let's make it Eggham running meat,

  171. sorry and beyond wherever you come from. You know what

  172. that's talking about is talking about near, a little bit

  173. further away, a little bit further away, and to the

  174. uttermost parts of the earth. And for those people who

  175. don't know, we stream our services every Sunday. There are

  176. people in Asia who will see this service next Sunday

  177. because we're streaming to people we don't know. But we

  178. feel it's important to share the gospel and the good

  179. news of Jesus Christ. And that's you. That scriptures for you.

  180. I know it's spoken to the early Church. But you

  181. shall receive power from on Either Holy Spirit will fall

  182. upon you as believers and disciples for Christ. If we

  183. make ourselves available to God's Holy Spirit, he will equip

  184. us and empowis. If we give him the lordship of

  185. our lives, then he will fill us and equip us

  186. to do the things. I put my dishwasher on three

  187. times yesterday, and I got to the end of the

  188. day and I thought, what's going on here. I'm not

  189. a fan of filling the dish Actually, no, I am

  190. a fan of filling the dishwasher, because that means the

  191. plate has been dirted, and that means somebody's at something.

  192. But I'm not a fan of emptying it, if you

  193. know what I mean. And I suddenly realized I got

  194. a bit towards the athought, oh, I'm emptying it the

  195. third time, And then I thought, yes, but that means

  196. we've had people in our house who've heard the Gospel,

  197. heard the good News at some point throughout the day.

  198. Thank you, Lord, empowered. I didn't go home, I didn't

  199. go to sleep last night tired. I went to sleep

  200. last night satisfied. And we walk with humility and a

  201. desire to serve one another. In Philippians chapter two, verses

  202. five to eight, it says, this have this mind in you,

  203. which also is in Christ. Jesus, who being in the

  204. form of God, did not consider it robbery to be

  205. equal with God, but made himself of no reputation, taking

  206. the form of a bond servant and coming in the

  207. likeness of men, and being found in appearance as a man,

  208. he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death,

  209. even the death on the cross. I just want to

  210. go back to some real basics here. There is a

  211. consequence for wrongdoing. If you do something wrong, if you

  212. speed and the police take a picture of you and

  213. you get a ticket in the post, there's a consequence

  214. to speeding, you know, and then you either get a

  215. fine or go to naughty school, or whatever the consequences are.

  216. There is a consequence to wrongdoing. And there are things

  217. that you and I do wrong, and that's including those

  218. who are listening later. There are things we do wrong

  219. that we can do nothing about. We've done it. We

  220. God calls it sin. It's not doing what He wants

  221. us to do. And there's a consequence of sin. But

  222. there's a price that's been paid. There's a sacrifice that

  223. God made. He sent his one and only son, Jesus,

  224. his only son. He didn't have a plan B. There

  225. isn't a plan B. He sent his one and only

  226. son to die on across for you and for me

  227. to pay the price of the consequence of that sin.

  228. And as we choose him as our savior, He did

  229. not just die on across and get buried in a tomb.

  230. He rose again. We read about that, and I love Easter.

  231. Easter is a great time of the year because we

  232. remember that he's risen. But we remember every day that

  233. Jesus Christ has risen. He's our savior and He's paid

  234. the price for us. And so when we read about

  235. Jesus being humble, Yeah, he was a leader, he was

  236. the son of God. He was influential, he was a teacher.

  237. And yet he washed his disciples feet and he served them.

  238. And some of the disciples said no, no, no, no, no,

  239. don't do that. He said, no, I must, I must

  240. wash your feet. I want to serve you with humility

  241. and obedience. Guys, if you ever sense the Father nudging

  242. you this week to serve somebody, just to do something.

  243. And so when I say sir, it doesn't have to

  244. be a big thing. Sometimes it would just be no,

  245. you go first, Oh, can I buy you a coffee?

  246. My wife and I were sitting in a restaurant many

  247. years ago, and there was a person sitting on the

  248. table next to us, and he was obviously on his own,

  249. and he started chatting to us, and we got chatting

  250. and talked a lot. All the way through the meal.

  251. I just felt the father say bless him. So I'm

  252. not saying you have to do this. I'm just saying

  253. giving you an example, because it could be as simple

  254. as a coffee. But just went up to the waiter

  255. and just said, look, I'd just like to pay my

  256. bill and this gentleman's bill, please. And I said, if

  257. he asks you about it, just say it's a blessing

  258. nothing more. Doesn't have to be anything complicated. I didn't

  259. want to say, oh, you've got to become a Christian

  260. to get your meal, none of that. I just wanted

  261. to bless him. We walked out the restaurant and I'd

  262. love to have been a fly on the wall when

  263. the waiter went up to the guy and said, oh,

  264. your bill's paid. But I leave that with God. I

  265. leave that with God. True greatness is not about position.

  266. It's not about qualifications. It's about how we serve one another.

  267. Humility is thinking less about ourselves and thinking more about others,

  268. or thinking of yourself less. This is counter culture. This

  269. is very different. Serving someone is Yeah, what's an example.

  270. An example would be I went into so Marks and

  271. Spencer's not that long ago. And I stood there and

  272. I held the door open, like you do. I was

  273. taught to hold the door open for people. Initially it

  274. was a lady, and then some more and then some children,

  275. and they all walked through, and no one even acknowledged me.

  276. I didn't want to, oh, thank you very much, but

  277. at least a nod or a smile, but head down.

  278. I don't think they even realized that I was holding

  279. the door open to them. And then I saw some

  280. more people coming, so I carried on hang and then

  281. I started going thank you, thank you, and they looked

  282. at me, and I didn't want to thank you. I

  283. just wanted to engage with people. It's important to look

  284. at people. It's important to engage with people. Look for

  285. the unseen and unglamorous ways you can serve people you

  286. live with, people you study with, people you work with.

  287. Because Christ's followers live in community, community is gathering. You

  288. can't be a community of one. You cannot be a

  289. community of one. And so as we devote ourselves to

  290. the teaching, and as we read in two Acts two

  291. forty two, devoting ourselves to teaching, we can find ourselves

  292. following Christ ways and Christ's purposes. We are not lone rangers.

  293. We grow together. There was next week, We've got a

  294. guest speaker, Albert Sloman, and let me do a little

  295. bit of a recap because this could be interesting for

  296. some people. So he came and joined us August last year,

  297. so just over a year ago, and he had a

  298. prophetic word for us as a church, God speaking through

  299. him where he said, there's a tsunami of souls coming.

  300. Get ready. And at that point in time, we were

  301. in another building and we're nowt here and it's great

  302. that we're kind of filling this space. But I'm already

  303. talking to the college about the next bigger haul in

  304. the college because it won't take us much to fill

  305. this and God is on the move. God is on

  306. the move, you know. And so as I said, worship team,

  307. if you want to get involved in the worship team,

  308. speak to Carris. Let her know, let her know what

  309. your gifts are. If you like singing, let her know

  310. if you if you've played the drums or keep it.

  311. More and more, as I get to know some of you,

  312. I have found there's hidden talents and technology too. You know,

  313. we are a technology technology enabled church, you know, cameras

  314. and all those kinds of things working on the desk,

  315. you know it Just so if you want to get

  316. involved social media, there's a whole bunch of stuff. Just

  317. let us know, because we'd love to involve you in

  318. being church. We can grow and we can flourish together.

  319. I don't know what your horizon is. How far if

  320. I said think about the long term, how far ahead

  321. would you be thinking. I guess for the students in

  322. the room, you're probably thinking to the end of your degree,

  323. So that might be June next year, or it might

  324. be June into a further two three years time. For

  325. some of you, if you've ever had a mortgage, you'll

  326. have to start thinking about a mortgage or settling down

  327. or buying a house. You're starting to think about five, ten, fifteen,

  328. twenty five years when you start thinking about pension planning.

  329. And I'm looking at the average age in the room

  330. and thinking, nobody's worried about pension planning right now, but

  331. for those who do, we're thinking about what happens when

  332. you're sixty seven and older. It does come. It does come.

  333. You know it will come one day, but you know what,

  334. there's an even longer perspective than that. It's called an

  335. eternal perspective. Where are you going to spend the rest

  336. of eternity? Each one? I don't want to get morbid

  337. about this, but one day we will all leave this earth,

  338. and where will we go next? Are We're going to

  339. be with Jesus. We're going to be with Father God.

  340. An eternal perspective that matters. We're not just being saved

  341. from something, but we are being saved for something. We're

  342. not just being saved from sin. We're saved to serve.

  343. It's such a privilege to serve you in different ways.

  344. And do you know what evangelism speaking, the Gospel comes

  345. out of the love of Christ in our lives. When

  346. I am full of the Holy Spirit, and I'm not

  347. full of the Holy Spirit every day, sometimes the me

  348. rises up, you know, and I get a bit angry sometimes.

  349. You know, we all do it, don't we don't. We

  350. all get things wrong from time to time. But I

  351. want to be full of God's stuff so that when

  352. somebody comes along and squeezes me, a bit of God's

  353. stuff comes out, not a bit of me. Think about

  354. a sponge. A sponge is absolutely useless if it's crusty

  355. and hard on the side of your bath. If you

  356. drop it on, the water will float until the surface

  357. is broken and the water will start to flow into

  358. the sponge and it will start to soak up the

  359. water around it. Then you can use it for what

  360. you need to use it for. And then when you

  361. squeeze it, the water comes out. If I squeezed you today,

  362. what would come out. I'm not going to come along

  363. and do it. We are ordinary people trying to do

  364. extraordinary things. The extraordinary things we cannot do in our

  365. own strength, but we can with God. So I'm going

  366. to give you a couple of challenges as I close

  367. out what I'm sharing today. Number one is I'd like

  368. to encourage you. Now. I want to say this month,

  369. but actually it's really near the end of September, So

  370. let me say, before the end of October. Why don't

  371. you have a coffee with someone you don't know and

  372. just get to know them. I sometimes put a sign

  373. I sometimes go and sit in Starbucks. I generally work

  374. from home. I do like Starbucks by me, not other

  375. coffees are available, by the way, Sorry I forgot that.

  376. But sometimes I'll sit in Starbucks and I'm literally sitting

  377. there working and I'll have a little sign up in

  378. front of me that says, please, if I can buy

  379. you a coffee, I'd love to have a chat. And

  380. I've had people come ac to me say is this real?

  381. So yeah, what kind of coffee would you like? And

  382. I've talked about loads of things, not always about church.

  383. But do you know what, I know I need to

  384. get to know more strangers. And I know some of

  385. you are strangers to me today and I'm a stranger

  386. to you. But do you know what if we stay

  387. in the circle that we're in all the time, that

  388. circle will get smaller and smaller and smaller. If we

  389. keep our eyes open, looking to some of the other things,

  390. looking to the stranger, looking to the person that's lost.

  391. If you don't know whether you live in Egging mooor

  392. Inglefield Green or somewhere else, if you see someone lost,

  393. and you know first week of term there will be

  394. lots of people who are lost looking around, just go

  395. up and ask them can I help you. There's been

  396. people who've been in this church because somebody asked them,

  397. can I help you? And that was all they did.

  398. And then consequences then followed up. Christ's followers are filled

  399. with his word, They're filled with his spirit, and they

  400. serve one another. And when I say serve one another,

  401. I don't just mean serving the church. I mean serving

  402. his people. I want to kind of close out with

  403. a scripture. It's Luke twenty four, and it's as Jesus

  404. left his disciples, Luke twenty four, And it's because of

  405. what he did here. So let me just read this

  406. Luke twenty four, fifty to fifty two. And he led

  407. them out as far as Bethany, and he lived up

  408. his hands and blessed them. Now it came to pass

  409. whilst he blessed them, that he was parted from them

  410. and carried up to heaven. And they worshiped him and

  411. returned to Jerusalem with great joy. Here's the thing I

  412. want to call out. A blessing is a wonderful thing

  413. to do. If I sneezed right now, some of you

  414. might go, bless you. It's kind of a habit we

  415. get into. But wow, isn't it good just to say

  416. bless you? God? Bless you he as he left them.

  417. As Jesus left this earth, he left his disciples those

  418. who'd been following him, being intimate with him for months

  419. and years. He said, I'm going now, but I'm going

  420. to bless you. I want to encourage you have a

  421. coffee or a tea if you prefer tea with a

  422. stranger in October, and end the conversation with some kind

  423. of blessing. The blessing doesn't have to be bless you.

  424. It might be thank you so much for sharing your

  425. story with me, thank you for being honest with me.

  426. I want to respond to this word today by coming

  427. back to worship. I'm going to encourage the worship team

  428. to come and gather with me, because I sense there's

  429. a whole pile of things that people are dealing with.

  430. As I talked about the banner and what the enemy

  431. meant for evil turn for good and will turn for good,

  432. I'm absolutely sure we're going to get the banner back.

  433. I'm going I'm going to I'm going to be talking

  434. to God about this all weeks, saying where's the banner? Lord,

  435. Show me where it is, because a testimony will come

  436. out of that. But you know what, there are people

  437. who've had a difficult moment this week, and it's irritating

  438. you because it's irritating you. You can't put it down.

  439. Because you can't put it down, it dwarfs everything else.

  440. And I think the sense the Father's wants to just say,

  441. come take a step, take a step, take a further step,

  442. don't stay where you are, don't stay stuck, take a step,

  443. and as you take a step, I will be with you.

  444. There's one or two people who've had to make hard

  445. decisions this week, and you had to make tough decisions.

  446. Somebody's asked you to make a choice. You say, I

  447. don't want to make it now. Can I make it

  448. in three months? No? No, Unfortunately, you need to make

  449. the decision today or this week, and you've had to

  450. make a choice. I think there's one or two people

  451. who had to say farewell to stuff things and people,

  452. and in saying farewell, you're kind of still looking over

  453. your shoulder, saying I want to be back there, but

  454. I'm here now. All I'm going to ask before these

  455. guys worship is I'm just going to pray a simple press.

  456. So if any of those things is you, would you

  457. stand where you are for those who are listening at

  458. home and those who are listening later. If you need

  459. to take a step to move from where you are

  460. stuck to a new place. Would you just stand, I'm

  461. not going to ask you anything about it. I'm just

  462. going to pray for you. I'm going to leave that

  463. conversation between you and God. But if you are stuck,

  464. you're stuck in a rut, You're stuck in a situation,

  465. You're stuck in a relationship, You're stuck in a place

  466. where you can't get out. You almost feel like the

  467. I see a picture of God coming in unlocking some doors,

  468. some prison doors, some people who have been stuck in

  469. certain situations, and you feel it's nothing you can do.

  470. But I sense the Father says, just try the door.

  471. In fact, the door's not even locked. I've already unlocked it.

  472. But because it's shut, you think it's locked. Anybody else

  473. want to stand as who I'm just going to pray,

  474. taking a step with God. And so Father, we lift

  475. our hands, and Father, we pray for these folks standing. Father,

  476. we pray that Lord you'd help them, you'd equip them,

  477. you would enable them. Father, I pray, firstly, Lord, you'd

  478. let your light shine in them and through them. Let

  479. your light shine, let the shadows be gone, Let the

  480. darkness disappear. In Jesus' name, and Father, I pray that

  481. confidence would arise. I pray that boldness would fall upon

  482. my brothers and sisters who are standing today here in

  483. this place. Father, Would you fill them? Would you equip

  484. when they would enable them? Father, I pray for breakthrough.

  485. I pray for a breaking of contracts that have been

  486. put in place in the wrong way. Father, I pray

  487. for a new contract. I pray for a new relationship. Father,

  488. I pray for a new connection. And Father, I pray

  489. that would all be in your name. We'd pray as

  490. Jesus is glorified in this place. Amen,
