Lessons for the Future

Well, if you have your Bibles, if you'll turn with

me to Deuteronomy, Deuteronomy chapter one. This morning, Deuteronomy chapter one,

we're going to start in verse reading verse nineteen. In

just a moment. I want to share with you this morning. Actually,

we had asked doctor Cheryl, who has been our interim

head of school at our academy but as a Christian

academy for the last two years, to share this morning

to speak to our graduates. I talked to him late

yesterday evening and he came down with the stomach bug

and is sick today, and so unfortunately he's not able

to be here. So I'm gonna you get me instead

that I send you his love. He loves Bethesda, he

loves our academy, and I tell you he is. He

is sick today, but he is also sick because I

know he wants to be here today and share with

you and so, but just continue to pray for him.

Most of you know as well that his wife, Debbie

has cancer and there's been a long battle. So continue

to pray for Doc and miss Debbie today. But I

want you to turn with me to Douteronomy chapter one. Now,

Doc had a well prepared message, and he sent it

to me last night, and he said to me early

this morning, he said, Pastor, it would be such an

honor for me if you would preach my sermon. But

I'm telling you it's hard to preach another person's sermon.

And so I just it was so well prepared. But

it's when it's your thoughts and you've worked through it,

it's a lot easier to do it on your own.

It's harder to pick that up from if you're someone else.

And today I feel like the Lord led us to

Deuteronomy chapter one, and so if you'll follow along with

me this morning, and this is a passage that the

Lord led me to.

This morning, I pray the Lord speak to.

You, you know, for today is our graduate Sunday, and

I particularly want to spend some time just focusing and

encouraging them as they're heading off to different adventures, try

starting new careers, starting college. For many of them, you

know you think about for are graduates, and I.

Speak to you graduates today.

Your whole life, you've kind of been thinking about this moment.

You know, from an early child, even in kindergarten, you're

asked to think about what you'll do when you'll grow up.

Who will you be when you grow up? What do

you want to do when you grow up? And this

moment's been leading up. These last thirteen years have been

leading up to this moment. You graduate and you get

to become what you've always dreamed that you will become.

For me, I remember at kindergarten or from a young age,

I wanted to be an airline pilot. Now you can

see that's a long Where I am today is a

long place where I thought I would.

Be at a as a teenager.

And I wonder for you here today in this room

as you think about your childhood and you thought about

the dreams that you had as a child, and where

you are today, where are you compared to those dreams

that you had This morning, as we're thinking about for

our students, and you think about you and I as

individuals continuing to follow on the journey that God has

for us, God had planned for us. I pray this

morning and I want to share a scripture that will

help guide you on the journey to accomplish what God

has for you. As we come to this passage scripture

this morning, it's the cake Barnea and This is the

edge of the Promised Land. This is Deuteronomy. Moses is

prepared in Israel. The whole book of Deuteronomy is Moses

prepared Israel to enter into the Promised Land. And Deuteronomy

chapter one. He leads them back to Kekodesh Barnea and

we're going to talk about this at great length.

And just a minute.

But this is the edge of the Promised Land. And

here he's given them final instructions as they enter into

the Promised Land. This promised land was a land described

to them as a land flowing with milk and honey.

This idea, if something is flowing for something indicates that

there's abundance. There's more enough to satisfy your every need.

Can I encourage you, graduates? Can I encourage you men

and women?

Today?

God has a plan for you, and his plan there

is an abundance to supply all the needs that you

have for your life. And in this passage of scripture

he walks them through is they come to Kakadesh Barnia,

and he's given them their final instructions before they entered

the Promised Land. He wants to if you remember, if

you studied through the tour of the first five books

of the Old Testament. Moses is not going with them,

but he wants to give them, if you will, last

words that will prepare them for the future. But in

these last words, particularly what we're going to look at

this morning, it's a lesson from the past. Has anybody

ever here made a bad decision in the past? Have

you ever made a bad decision that really hurt? Right?

I remember one time I had a lab and I

was training this lab. He was a young puppy and

he was about I think maybe eight nine months old,

but he is already going to be a big boy.

He's about eighty pounds at that time. He was a

yellow lab and I'd gotten a lead. I don't know

if you know a lead is lead is a long

piece of lead, but sure what you do with the lead?

I was training to fetch, and so I would throw

a bumper and I would throw it out, and I'd

had the end of that leash, and he'd run to

the end where the bumper was, and as he got

the bumper, I would pull him back to me to

teach him to come back to return to me. Well,

this one time I was training him outside and I

had thrown that bumper. Well, I had forgotten where the

end of the leash was. Well, he starts running and

I realized the end of the leash is right around

my leg. Well, you imagine the ninety pive dog running

a full blast. Guess what happened. He got to the

end of the leash and the end of the leash

I went with him, and so my legs went full

up in the air and I landed on my back.

And you know what I learned at that moment, I'll

never do that again. Every time I throw that leash,

I'm going to know where the end of that leash is.

You know, there's times of our life where we have

lessons in life, hard lessons, and when we learned those

hard lessons, many times for us older in our lives

and different places in our life, we learned it. Hey,

I'm not going to do that again. I'm not going

to touch that hot burner again. I touched it once

it was hot. I'm not going to do that again.

And here Moses is giving them a past lesson from

the past, the past failure of their parents, and he

wants them to learn from the failure of their parents

how it might prepare them for the future. Can I

can imagine you if we would all gather together, and

if you all in this room today could speak wisdom

to these graduates today. Many of the wisdoms you would

impart them would be wisdoms of your past failures. You'd

probably say to them, Hey, I did this and this

was a bad idea.

I did this, and this really hurt me.

This really hurt my family, this really hurt others, or

really caused me a lot of harm or a lot

of difficulty in my life. Don't do what I did.

Can I courage you grandparents' parents? Many things? Many times

in our life we are apprehensive to speak to our

family or loved ones out our past failures. Can I

courage you parents, grandparents, don't be afraid to share your

past failures, to lead your children and your grandchildren away

from the mistakes that you made. Hearing this passage, Moses

has that heart. He loves these young generation who's going

into the Promised Land, and he wants them to learn

from the past of their parents. And so this morning,

I want you to see how remembering the past can

change the future. Let's look at this passage together Deuterontomy,

chapter one, starting in verse nineteen. Will you stand with

me unless in reverence are reading God's word. Let's read

Moses's word, the Lord's word to his people, and the

Lord's word to.

Us his people. Today it says this.

Then, when we set out from Hebrew, and we went

through all that great and terrifying wilderness that you saw

on the way to the hill country of the Emrits,

as the Lord our God commanded us, and we came

to Keke Deshbard, and I said to you, you have

come to the hill country of the Emirates, which the

Lord our God is giving us. See, the Lord your

God has set the land before you go up. Take

possession as a lord that God your fathers has told you.

Do not fear or be dismayed. Then all of you

came near to me and said, let us send men

before us, that they may explore the land for us,

bringing a word again of the way by which we

may go up in the cities into which we shall come.

The things seemed good to me, and I took.

Twelve men from you, one man from each tribe, and

they turned and went up into the hill country, into

the valley of Eskole and spied it out, and when

they took in their hands some of the fruit of

the land, and they brought down to us and brought

us a word again, and said, it is a good

land the Lord our God is giving us. Yet you

would not go up, but rebelled against command of the

Lord your God. You murmured in your tents and said,

because the Lord hated us, he has brought us out

the land of Egypt to give us into the hands

of Emrites, to destroy us. Where we're going up, our

brothers have made our hearts melt, saying that people are

greater and taller than we, the cities are great and

fortified up to heaven. And besides, we've seen the son

of ACoM there. Then I said to you, do not

be a dread or afraid of them.

The Lord your God, who goes.

Before you, will himself fight for you, just as he

did for you in Egypt, before your eyes and in

the wilderness, where you have seen how the Lord your

God cured you as a man his son, all the

way that you went up until you came to this place.

Yet in spite of this word, you did not believe

the Lord your God, who went before you in the

ways to seek you out to place, to pitch your

tents in a fire by night and in the cloud

by day, to.

Show you by the way you should go.

Let's pray together. Lord, We thank you Lord for this morning. Lord,

I pray this morning. Lord, you know my heart, You

know what led us to this pastor today. Lord, I

pray today that we would or we would hear your word. Lord,

you know the preparation that been putting in place today. Lord,

you know what's on my heart, you know what's on

my mind. God, I pray today. Lord. I'm insufficient to

be your your man. I'm insufficient to give this message.

But Lord, I pray that today you would feel me,

that Lord, I might be an instrument in your hand,

and Lord, that you might use.

Me to speak to the heart of your people. Or

we love you.

We look to your word today, just as the people

of visual did. And Lord, may we hear today just

as you spoke to them. May you speak to us,

and Lord, may we follow you as Lord, day follows

you and your name.

We pray, Amen, you may be seated.

Did you come to this passage this morning as we

look to remember the past and.

Change the future.

Let's look at a few lessons that Moses is giving

the people about remembering the past and changing the future.

Number one graduates, God has a plan for you. God

has a not only a plan for you, but this

is a God has a promise plan for you. In Deuteronomy.

If you go to Deuteronomy, want eight. Here it gas

them together kekedesh barnea. This is a place that they

had gathered together before. Again here they are. Here's the

children the of the parent I mean the children of

the parents who before them, who rebelled against the Lord

and disobeyed God. So now they're at the same place

that their parents' works once stead and disobeyed God. Here

they're standing. They've heard of the story before. They're standing

in the same place. And he says to them in

verse eight, see I have set the lamb before you

go in and take possession of the land. The Lord

swore to your father, to Abraham, to Isaac, to Jacob,

and to give to them to their offspring after them.

He stands them on that hollow ground where their parents stood,

on the edge of the promised land, and he says

to them, listen, God has promised you that land, not

only did he promise it to you, but he promised

to Abraham, he premposed to Isaac, he promised it to Jacob,

he promised it to us as your people. This is

God's promise land for you.

Go and take it. Can I tell you.

Students today, graduates today, here today, God.

Has a promise plan for you.

God has a path that he wants to lead your.

Life in you and I must understand.

That God has a plan for us and we are

to follow his plan. As he comes to verse nineteen,

here reminds them as of.

The story of how he took.

How God took their parents to that same place, and

how God told them the same words, and then verse

in passages of scripture we see in this in verse.

I think in verse twenty one, he say, see the Lord,

as God has set land before you, Go and take

possession as a lord. The Lord, the God of your

father's has told you. Do not fear be dismayed. He

reminds them, I told your fathers your parents the same thing.

God has a promise plan for you. He has a

plan for your life. Follow it. Can I tell you, students,

It's important to understand that God has a plan for

you and it's important that you follow God's plan for you.

I think it's important for you.

To hear the word of God to understand and discern

what is God's plan for you. In Jeremiah twenty nine

eleven says, where I know the plans that has for you,

declares the Lord plans for a welfare, not for evil,

to give a future and a I encourage you, students,

follow God's plan for your life.

That's not easy.

That's always what I promise you there's God. Following God's

plan doesn't mean always that it's going to be what

you want, what you desire. God's plans are different than

our plans. I will say I was seventeen years old

when God called me to be a pastor. I told

you earlier that I wanted in my mind, I want

to be airline pilot. I wanted to fly, and God

had a different plan for me, and I followed that

plan at seventeen years old. I'll tell you that after

that I would follow God to North Greenville and go

to stay Christian education. And after that I wasn't done.

I did not want any more school after college, but

God had a different plan. I remember so many times

in my life being at a crossroads, and hear me, students,

I'm just speaking to you from my heart. Being at

a crosswords, I had to determine whether I wanted to

do what Jonathan wanted to do or I don't want

to follow God. And sometimes it didn't make sense. Sometimes

it was hard, but I said, Lord, I'll follow you

even when it doesn't make sense. After college, I didn't

want to go to school, and I had a we

were at First Baptist in the and Trail and First

Medistine and Trail. My home church had came to me

and said, hey, we're changing the this student ministry position.

It's been only one pastor, but we're changing it to

where it's gonna be two Pastors's gonna be a high

school pastor, gonna be midle school pastor, where we really

want you to be the middle school pastor, and we

want you to be We're going to start your like

kind of a entry level interm position and we'll move

it into a full time position. And Brandy was working

at Metroline Christian Academy at the time as a music teacher,

and I said, like I said, I was done.

I was done with school. I didn't want any more school.

I just finished college and I was thinking, Oh, I'm

going to work at this my home church. I'll be

this musical pastor. It's a great church. My wife's got

a great job. And the Lord says, you're going to.

Go to school.

And I said, Lord, why would you want me to

do this? This doesn't make sense. I mean, I got

a job, she's got a John loved up. This is

a great church.

This is my home church. And Lord says, you're going

to go to school.

And I remember Brandan and I were engaged and we

were planning to get married that that August. This was

about March, and she said. I remember telling her. I said,

Lord's told me I need we need to go.

Listen to me.

And she says, but Jonathan, I've got a job here.

I don't have a job in Rawley.

And wait Forest, I said, I know, she said, and

you ain't got a job. I said, I know. I said,

but Brandy, I just know God's calling us. Within a month,

Clay Stephens talked to Tony Manning. They got Brandy's resume

and Brandy, you got a job, but that is a

Christian academy and she became a teacher here for three

years got me through seminary. But listen, if we would

have said no, who knows where that would ever be

the pastor of this church today. Listen, God's ways are

so much better.

Than our ways.

It's so important that you, a student, say, Lord, I

will follow you, even when it doesn't make sense, even

when it's not what I want.

Or my plan.

God, I will follow your plan.

I love what word Whisby said one time. The safest

place on this earth is in the will of God.

The most dangerous place on this earth is.

Out of the will of God.

Students, people here today, may we learn from the past

of the from those mistakes of the past, and may

we determine that we're going to follow God's promise plan

for us.

How do we do that?

I would say, application you would say, pastor.

How do I do that? How did you do that?

How did you? I think the only way we're going

to follow God's careful plan for us is to be

in his word and be in prayer. If we can't

know God's will, we can't know God's plan Unless we're

in his word and allowing his word to speak to

our hearts. We can't know his plan for us unless

we're in His word and we're in prayer seeking his

desire for us, seeking Him in prayer, and what you

would have for us. So, students, can I encourage you

as you seek to move forward, as you remember the

past and change the future. Remember that God has a

paris plan for you, and follow that plan by being

in His word. A make a discipline in your life

to learn to be a student of the Word and

be a one who seeks God consistently in your life

in prayer. I want you to see the second piece

of this passage of the day, as God has a

promised plan for you. Moses wanted them to hear that

God had God has a promised plan for you. Take

possession of the land. Don't fear to be dismayed. Go

and take the land that God has set before you.

Number two, Remember God has gone before you. In Verses

thirty and thirty one, as they're on Kakadesh Barneah, and

He's reminded them of his parents, their parents, and how

they were there before, how the Lord led them there,

and how just before they went into the promised land,

there was the Emrits.

In that land.

And God told them to go take possession of the land.

In verse thirty, he told their parents, and he also

he tells them again, reminds them again.

He says in verse thirty.

As they were fearful of those who were before them.

And I imagine this, they were at this kind of

turning point. They were at the edge of the promised Land,

about to go into the promised land. But there in

the promised land there was the Amriites, there were giants,

there were obstacles in the way, and they were in

fear of what might happen if they followed God into

the promised land. God's comfort to them is this what

his comfort was verse thirty.

This is what he says, the word the Lord.

Verse the Lord your God goes before you, you will

himself fight for you, just as he did for you

in Egypt, before your eyes and in the wilderness where

you've seen how the Lord your God carried you as

a man carries his son, all the way that you

went until you came to this place. It's a beautiful

passage of scripture. Here their parents as came to Kekeodesh Bornia,

and they saw the Amorites, they heard about the giants

or in the lands. They were fearful of the enemy

ahead of them. They are fearful of the future battles

that may be before them. God says, and listen, don't worry.

I'll fight your battles for you, no matter what great

adversary and what might come against you in the future.

Don't worry because I will fight for you. But secondly,

don't worry because what I will carry you. Listen to

the imagery as you've come through the wilderness. God has

carried you through the wilderness. Is the imagery, he says,

of a man carrying his son all the way to

the place that you've come to. He says, just as

a father carries his son throughout different places.

So I will carry you.

So do not fear as you're entering the future of

what battles might lie ahead and what my trouble might

be ahead, because one God will fight for you, and

God will carry you. Can I tell you, graduates? Can

I tell you people here today, as you're thinking about God,

what plans do you have for me in my future?

What do you have ahead of me in the days

to come. Whether you're a young adult or a senior adult,

we all are looking to the future. You might be

fearful today of what might health issues I might face

in the future, and what might problems I might have

with a relationship, or what might challenges I might have

in my future at work or whatever it may be. Today,

Can I give you assurance that God says to you,

no matter how big the battles look, that ahead of you,

God promises you that if you follow His plan for you,

he will fight your battles for you. Can I tell you,

no matter how difficult the trouble may look ahead of you,

God promises you that He will carry you as a

father carries his son. He promised them that God has

gone before you. I heard a I think as you

think about this passage of scripture, it's a powerful promise

that God says that He goes before you.

Is interesting in Joshua.

Joshua is the next book of the Bible, and Joshua

and Joshua see that this generation followed Joshua into the

Promised Land. Joshua's the leader, He's the one who.

Takes over from Moses.

It's interesting as they're getting ready in Joshua chapter three

to go into the Promised Land, Joshua commands them they're

just a few days away from going entering into the

Promised Land. And then Joshua three he tells them, I'm

going to read it to you. He says, at the

end of the three days, the officers went through the camp,

and he commanded the people, as soon as you see

the ark of the Covenant of the Lord your God,

being carried by the levitical priests, then you shall set

out from your place and follow it. There shall be

a distance between you and it, about two thousand cubics

in length. Do not come near to it, in order

that you might know the way you should go, for

you've not passed this way before. Then, Joshua said this people,

consecrates yourself for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you.

And Joshua said to the priest, take the ark of

the Covenant, pass on before the people.

And they took the of the Covenant and went before

the people.

You may read that, and says, okay, pastor, what's so

powerful about that? Well, the ark of Covenant was symbolic

of the presence of God. And Joshua says, tomorrow, get

ready a few days we're going to take off, and

we're going to go into the promised land. Hey, and

when you see the presence of God, when the ark

of Covenant gets up, you let the presence of God

go ahead of you, and you keep a distance from you,

and you should follow. You follow the arc and covenant

because why because you don't know where to go, But

you allow the ark of the Covenant, the presence of God,

to go before you and lead you to the way.

That you should go.

Listen, Can I tell you students? Can I tell you

people here today? Follow God's promise plan for you? And

when you follow God's promise plan for you, his presence

will go before you before you take a step, before

you enter into what area of life that God lead

you to. If you follow God's promised plan, his presence

will go before you before you even face the battle.

The Lord's already prepared the way for you today.

Will you hold on to the truth, the lesson that

God has a promise plan for you? Secondly, will you

remember the past of how God has went before you

and how will God will go before you in the future. Thirdly,

this morning, I won't you remember the past change the future?

Remember today you have a choice. What is the choice

you have? A choice to follow the voice of man.

We have a choice to follow the voice of God.

This is the.

Heart of this passage this morning Deuteronomy, chapter twenty through

verse thirty two. He reminds them of the past. He says,

I took your parents here, God did took them to

keke Dash Barnia.

We're just about.

Enter into the Promised Land. And they came together and says,

I'll tell you what we should do before we enter

the Promised Land. We need to send them twelve spies,

the spies, to go view the land and see what

the lands, what the makeup of the land.

Is, before we enter it.

So I thought it was a good idea.

So we took one spy from every.

Tribe, twelve spies, and we sent them.

Into the land.

And after forty days into the Promised Land, they came

back and they gave us a report. And they reported

to us, and he gives us summary of them in verse.

Let me see if I can find it exactly where

that is.

In verse twenty six, he reminds them, Yet you would

not go up, but you were about to get some

commandment of the Lord. You murmured in your tents, and

you said because the Lord has hated us. He brought

us out of the land of Egypt to give us

into the lands that emirates to destroy us. Where we're

going up, our brothers had made us our hearts met.

And that is the report.

You see. There was twelve spies.

Ten spies reported that the land is beautiful, it's full

of milk and honey, it's.

Full of great fruits.

But they are giants there, and the Amirits are evil,

and they have cities and they're as high as the sky.

And there's no way we'll defeat those cities, and will

know where we.

Will defeat those people.

They'll kill us, they'll destroy us, and they're giants who

will wipe us out if we follow. In Moses describing

their bad report, he says their report made their hearts melt.

There's a voice of man in numbers thirteen through twenty five,

twenty five through thirty three.

It gives us that description.

They said the land is full of verse twenty seven.

You could see that they told them. We came into

the land which you set before. It flows with milk

and honey. This is its fruit. However, the people dwell

in the land are strong. The cities are fortified, very

large and decide.

We saw the descendants of a knock there.

The Emmaclites dwell in the land, Hittites of Jebusites, the

emir Rights dwell in the hill country. It's a great land,

but there's people are too strong there. And Moses says

that your parents their hearts melted. Why because they followed

the voice of Man. Can I tell you, students, Can

I tell you people today, there's a temptation for you,

as God's calling you, as God leading you to follow

his plan for your life, to follow the voice of Man.

Some of that voice may be your own voice. There

will be a temptation, I could promise you everyone in

this room, everyone in this room could say, you know what.

There was a time in my life I thought my

plan was better than God's plan.

I thought my way was better than God's way. I

thought I was smarter than God.

And I made a decision, and that decision led to

my own dismise, my own destruction, a lot of problems

in my life. Can I tell you students today, don't

follow the voice of Man and dawn at times, follow

your own desires, because most of the time those.

Lead to your destruction to your own demise.

I think you notice in this passage Satan desires to

for you to de doubt God's plan, and this he

gives the voice of these tense spillies that bring doubt, discouragement,

and disbelief among God's people. Listen, students, Satan wants to

discourage you. He wants you for you to doubt God's

plan for you, and he wants you not to believe

what God's word says about his plan for you. I

love what Chuck Wendall said. I think he's right. There'll

be all kinds of opinions in this world to tell

you what you should do with your life, from peers,

to family to whatever it may be. There'll be so

much many people who tell you, yeah, you shouldn't really

do that, you really shouldn't follow that this.

Will be much better for you if you do this.

You must be determined as a believer that you're going

to follow what God has for you.

Period.

Like what Chuck Wendall says about this, I need to

be very candid with you. If you're a Sunday Christian,

you will not stand alone when outnumbered. Apart from our

personal vital faith in Jesus Christ. It's impossible to wage

a winning effort against the system called the world. This

world will do everything it can to discourage you from

following God's plan. Be determined that you will follow God's voice.

Second to you have a choice. You have a choice

to follow the voice of man. You have a choice

to follow the voice of God. Following the voice of

God means you'll take God at his word. Following God's

the voice of God means that you trust God's word

even when it's not popular. If you go back to numbers,

you'll remember there were ten spies who said we shouldn't go,

but there was two spies who said we should go.

Who were they Caleb and Joshua? And what was their

foundation for following the Lord? There may be giants there,

but God said he will fight for us. They rested

even when there was fear and apprehension about the future.

Even when there's fears about wars, they will fear about

trouble hardship. What they foundational for them was they held

on to what God's words said. Can I tell you, students,

in order to you to pursue the plan that God

has for you, you must follow God's plan. You must

rest and God's.

Gone before you.

But you must follow God's word and you must trust

his word. Can I encourage you today, God's people, look

back at your past, where where there's times where you

decided to go your own way? Can I tell you

God still has a plan for a God still has

a promised plan for you today? Will you say, today, Lord,

I know You've got a plan for me. But I

know I've made some mistakes in the past. But God,

you have a plan for me. I don't want to

follow it today. I want to rest that God, you

will go before me. And God, Today, I'm tired of

following my voice. I'm tired of following my plan. I'm

trying to. I'm tired of trying to follow the plans

of others. Today, Lord, I want to follow your voice.

Leave me, Lord, I will follow, he says to them

today Deuteronomy, remember the past and prepare for the future.

Can I tell you, Church family, today, remember the past

and let's change the future by following God's plan, by

knowing He's gone before us, and by following his voice.

I want to close with the poem. The title of

the poem is.

Thy way not mine.

Thy way, not mine, O Lord, however dark it be,

lead me by Thine on hen choose out thy path

for me. Smooth let it be, or rough it will be.

I'm still the best winding or straight. It leads right

onward to thy rest. I dare not choose my lot.

I would not if I might choose Thou from me,

My God, show I walk all right.

The kingdom that I seek is thine. So let the

way that leads.

To be thine.

Else I may surely stray.

Take thy Thou my cup, and with joy or sorrow,

feel as best to thee. Thee may seem though I

might my good and ill. Choose Thou from me for

my friends, my sickness or my health. Choose thou my

cares for me, my poverty or wealth not mine, not mine.

The choice and the things great or small. Bye you

my guide, my.
