For First Timothy. What a great passage. As we've probably
-
a few two sundays ago, we were in First Timothy.
-
If you turn your bibles with the First Timothy chapter
-
two this morning we're turned back there. We're going to
-
start in verse eight in just a moment. But that
-
was really the heart of chapter two is as Paul
-
urging the church of living lives of worship and worship
-
that's pleasing to the Lord. You know, I don't know
-
about you, but when I was a young boy, a
-
little boy, my mom and dad taught me manners. Mom
-
and dad ever taught you manners, taught brandy to brandy,
-
gripping home. We were taught as a young age that
-
you were to say please, You were to say thank you,
-
and you were to say you're welcome. You're always to
-
say no sir, no ma'am to someone who was older
-
than you. I always used mister and missus and saying
-
there and then you call them by their last name.
-
You don't interrupt others while they're talking. And not only
-
did you have that that you had to navigate as
-
a young kid, but you also had Tabor manners. That
-
means that there were things that you were not to
-
do when you were at the kitchen table. Right, you
-
were to wash your hands before you eat, by the way,
-
that was importing. You don't chew with your mouth open.
-
You chew with your mouth closed. You don't talk why
-
you chew? Right, all these different rules. Right, you had
-
to wait for everybody to get their food before you serve,
-
before you started eating. Don't big no, no, don't burp
-
at the table, right, struggle with that at a young age.
-
And you don't sing at the table too. That's another thing.
-
You don't sing at the table. So there's different etiquettes,
-
different things, different manners that we were taking. If you
-
think about that for a minute, why did my parents
-
teach me that? Why did Brandy's parents teach her manners?
-
Because they wanted us to know that there's certain way
-
that you show as a child, proper respect to others.
-
And also they wanted us to learn what was proper behavior. Well,
-
as we come to that understanding this morning, we teach
-
our children proper behavior, proper respect. And first Timothy Paul
-
writes this letter, and in this letter he's teaching the
-
church what is proper worship. And when you see that
-
that's in first Timothy, chapter three, Starting the verse fourteen,
-
he says, I hope you'd come to you soon, but
-
I am listening to this. I'm writing these things so
-
that if I delay, you may know how one ought
-
to behave and the household of God. So Paul wrote
-
this letter because he was coming, it was planning coming,
-
but if he was delayed, he wanted them to know
-
how they should ought to behave in church. And so
-
he writes this letter with that thesis, if you will
-
behind this is I'm writing to explain to them what
-
is proper what is proper behavior, what is proper worship
-
in the church. As we come to this passage. I
-
think it's important that's to know that that's Paul's heart
-
in this passage. In this church, there were those who
-
profess to be godly, and he wants them to understand
-
how they're to behave as godly men and women, how
-
they should worship. And so two sundays ago we started
-
this series and we looked at the first two things.
-
There was issues with men not properly, I mean not
-
behaving properly or not worshiping properly. And last time we looked,
-
he started with men first he talked about how men
-
must worship with proper posture. Right that you worship with
-
your hands lifted up, but you don't lift your hands
-
up before God and worship if you have unforgiveness against
-
your brother, your hands are unclean, and so you must
-
have Men must worship with proper posture. I would say
-
that for all of us, right, we don't worship with
-
unforgiveness in the heart. We Scripture says we get to
-
the altar, we find we know we have an issue
-
with our brother. We used to leave the altar and
-
go reconcile with our brother. And then secondly Paul went
-
into we must worship with proper motives, and he talked
-
about a lady's address and how many women in the
-
church and and ephesis there were adorning themselves in a
-
way in their dress that was drawing attention away from worship,
-
a way for worshiping the Lord instead of worshiping them,
-
and how they looked. And Paul was addressing that and says,
-
when you worship, you should worship in a way with
-
proper motives. That the worship just as this song just
-
saying that we're just saying it's not about being you
-
receiving attention. It's about worshiping in a way that's pleasing
-
to the Lord that he gets all the glory from it. Well,
-
this morning we come to the third address for Paul,
-
and we pick up his third teaching. So I want
-
you if you will stand with me, and let's look
-
at how Paul is teaching them proper worship, proper behavior
-
in the church body, how they ought to as he said,
-
as they ought to behave. And so let's start. We're
-
going to just read everything together just so you can
-
see this as one complete unit, because it is for Paul.
-
So one Timothy chapter two, we're starting verse eight. He says,
-
I desired and in every place that men should pray, lifting
-
up holy hands without anger or quarreling. Likewise, also women
-
should adorn themselves with respectable peril, with modesty and self control,
-
not braided hair, or gold or pearls, or costs of
-
the attire. But what is proper. Listen to that for
-
women who profess godliness with good works. Let a woman
-
learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a
-
woman to teach or exercise authority of a man. Rather,
-
she is to remain quiet for Adam was from first
-
then Eve, and Adam was not deceived, but the woman
-
was deceived and became the transgression. Yet she'll be saved
-
through childbearing if they continue in faith and love and
-
holiness with self control. Let's pray together, Father, We thank you,
-
Lord that you've led us to this service. Lord, I
-
pray that the words of our mouth and the meditation
-
of our hearts will be pleasing. Lord to you. Made
-
the songs that we sing, Lord be pleasing. Lord to you.
-
May the words that we proclaim that I proclaim be pleasing?
-
Lord to you. Lord, You know, Lord, what you've led
-
me to study this week. Lord, you know my preparation,
-
You know my heart, you know my mind. And Lord,
-
today they don't need my thoughts, they don't need my words.
-
They need your words. Lord. So I pray Lord that
-
I would decrease and you would increase today. And Lord,
-
the words that I will proclaimed, would Lord be pleasing.
-
Lord to you, Lord, but would be your words, Lord,
-
that you would fill me with your spirit, that I
-
might proclaim Lord your word today? And Lord, as we
-
have ears to hear today, Lord, may we receive Lord
-
your word. May your spirit give us a spirit of
-
discernment and understanding, we might preperly understand Lord your word.
-
And Lord, may we not be just hearers of the word,
-
but God, may you lead us to be doers of
-
the word that we respond Lord to how this word
-
applies to us individually, corporately as a body. And Lord,
-
may we be faithful to obey your word. Lord, we
-
love you, lor I pray you lead us into service
-
in your name. We pray, Amen, you may be seated.
-
So we again we kind of walking through the rest
-
of this passages. The first two weeks we saw we
-
must worship with proper posture. Secondly we were worship with
-
proper motives, and third this morning Paul addresses how we
-
must worship with proper submission and authority. We must worship
-
with proper submission and authority. I think it's important to
-
as we kind of start this morning and we think
-
about Paul's writing, that he might teach them how they
-
ought to behave So we know there's some misbehavior by
-
the men who are worshiping and with unforgiveness in their heart.
-
We we know it's some misbehavior from these ladies who
-
were adorning themselves and dressing in a way that's drawing
-
attention from worship to them. And now we know there's
-
this other issue. So what's the source? Where? Where is
-
this misbehavior coming from? And I think it's important to
-
understand that Paul identifies as we walk through this book,
-
and I think it's what's a goat so good about
-
teaching through books? As we get to see the book
-
as a whole, we know the source of this misbehavior
-
is false teaching. You know, Paul wrote this letter and
-
I only teach him how to live, but he also
-
wrote this letter to confront the false teaching. And we
-
saw that in one Timothy chapter one as we just
-
finished that chapter up a few weeks ago, and first
-
Timothy chapter and I'm I'm just going to encourage you
-
this morning. I am going to probably give twenty different
-
references to Bible references, okay, and so, and I'll encourage
-
you just try to follow on. Many of those are
-
going to be in Timothy. So what I'm going to
-
show you is what I'm going to explain to you
-
is not it's not somewhere far off. It's actually just
-
right within this this same letter that Paul writes. But
-
if you turn back when we one chapter, you'll see
-
Paul address this false teaching, and we saw this at
-
the very beginning's first Timothy chapter one, verse third and
-
three says, as I urge you when I was going
-
to Macedonia, you remain at Ephesus, since you may charge
-
certain persons not to teach any different doctrine or to
-
devote themselves to miss or endless genealogy, which promotes speculation
-
rather than stewardship from God, that is by Fay. So
-
we know false teaching was really happening in that. We
-
even know later on in that same chapter that Paul
-
actually calls out two false teachers, him Anas and Alexander
-
in verse twenty. So we know these false teachers were there.
-
We know there exists. But one of the things we
-
don't know from scripture from Paul doesn't tell us directly.
-
Let me say it that way, is we don't know
-
really what is the content of their teaching. You know,
-
Paul tells us that these teachers are there. He tells
-
us that he calls Timothy. By the way, Paul's writing
-
a letter to Timothy, who's the pastor, and so he's
-
writing this letter to Timothy that Timothy might instruct them
-
how they ought to live. But he's also is writing
-
to a pastor explain what he should do in the
-
false teaching, and so Paul doesn't just directly explain what
-
the false teaching is, and it's probably because he knows
-
as he's writing to Timothy, Timothy knows what it is.
-
He's the pastor of the church. He's there with the
-
day to day, he's seeing what's happening firsthand. So Paul
-
doesn't need to reiterate what the false teaching get is
-
because Timothy already knows what it is. And so that's
-
probably why we don't see Paul clearly state what it is.
-
But we do can We can gather some information from
-
different things. Paul says in Firse Timothy and also tewod
-
Timothy to understand really some things about what the false
-
teachers were teaching in Ephesus number A. I want to
-
explain just a few of them, just so you can
-
have an understand A. False teachers were focusing on dissensions
-
and speculations. How do I know that? Well, we know
-
that from the passage that just read to you. In
-
verse chapter one, verse three, it's says that you may
-
charge certain persons not to teach any different doctor, to
-
devote themselves to the myth English genealogies which promote speculations.
-
So these false teachers really focus on creative dissension, people
-
having people doubt what God's word says and kind of
-
creating speculation. Is that really what God's word says? That's
-
what they were focused on, the dissensions and speculations be
-
These false teachers were taught an esthetic spirituality. What is that?
-
What does that mean? I was studying that and I
-
was like, what does that mean? I've not heard that that.
-
Esthetic spirituality means that you could be more spiritual the
-
more self discipline you are. It's this teaching from false
-
teaching that if you would have stained from certain things,
-
you'll become more spiritual. False teachers believe, and they were
-
teaching at the time, if you would have stained from
-
food for a period of time, if you would stained
-
from marriage, and they were even going as far as
-
if you distained from sex, you will be more spiritual.
-
And that's what they were teaching. How do I know? That?
-
Turned with me to First Timothy chapter four. First Timothy
-
chapter four, Paul talks about this. He actually describes this
-
the First Timothy chapter four, verse one. Now the spirit
-
expressly says that in later time some would depart from
-
their faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits teaching of demons.
-
So listen, it's false teaching, right, seitful spirits, teaching of
-
demons through the sincerity of liars whose consciousness here and
-
now he tells them what they teach, who forbidden marriage
-
and require abstinence from food that God created to be
-
received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.
-
So we know from chapter four that Paul was saying
-
in latter times, false teachings who are affect by the
-
spirit of the devil will lead people away from the
-
truths to this ecstatic spirituality, to think they can be
-
spiritual by forbidden to be married and from abstaining from food.
-
So we know they were teaching this acstatic spirituality see
-
false teacher or persuaded. There was persuading many women in
-
the Church of Ephesus. There's many women who are being
-
drawn to this false teaching. We know this from the
-
next chapter, chapter five. You turn one chapter over with me.
-
First Simpathy chapter five, verse fourteen through fifteen he says this,
-
he's instructing the ladies in the church. He says, I
-
would have younger widows married mairy cheldren, manage their household
-
and give the adversary no occasion for some fun. Somewhat
-
younger women, that's the sentence before have already astrayed after Satan.
-
In chapter of the next letter that he writes to Timothy,
-
which is Timothy still the pastor of the Church of
-
Ephesus tewd Timothy two second Timothy three in six and seven,
-
he says, for among them those who are creeping households
-
and capture weak women, burden with sin and led astray
-
by various passions, always learning and never able to arrive
-
at the knowledge of truth. So we know these false
-
teachers they're teaching this aesthetic spirituality. Whether those false teachers
-
are focused on speculation to dissensions, and we know they're
-
praying on the women in the church. We know d
-
false teachers are are one of the false That one
-
of the things that the false teachers are really pushing
-
the ladies to is to abandon their god given roles.
-
What is that marriage? What is it having children? That's
-
one of the things as we see just in the
-
previous passages that who they forbidden marriage and require abstinence.
-
We see him instructing in chapter five women to marry
-
and have children and manage their households. And he's seen
-
some ladies have what abandoned these things and of straight
-
after Satan, and so we know the false teacher are
-
encouraging these women not only in false teaching, but they're
-
encouraging them to change their behavior and how God created them.
-
And so we know that's one of the methods. The
-
last thing I think we see as we think of
-
false teaching, we try to examine what these false teachers
-
are really focusing on. In one Timothy is we know
-
this evidence tells us in the body of this letter
-
these are the things that they were teaching. We also
-
can understand some things that were happening in other churches
-
that paralleled to this issue, and we see false teacher
-
had led also many women away. Also in krinth First Corinthians,
-
Paul writes a letter to a church in karn and
-
in this letter some of the very same things that
-
we see in for Timothy. We also see in Charinth
-
and First Corinthians that the false teacher had led many
-
in the church to deny the future of physical resurrection again.
-
They were teaching that the future resurrection of Christ. Christ
-
has already risen once right after he died and rose again.
-
But there's another second resurrection. It's second coming of Christ, right,
-
and that is the second resurrection. The false teachers were saying,
-
that's not that's not coming. They actually taught that it
-
already came, and what had already came. What they were
-
teaching was a present spiritual resurrection, and they were teaching
-
that to say, now that this present spiritual resurrection is here,
-
then it changes everything. And now there's no marriage, and
-
therefore there needs to be no sex, and therefore there
-
needs to be You need to stay from these foods,
-
and you need to be disciplined. You need to have
-
this spiritual discipline to really be spiritual. You need to
-
forget marriage, you need to forget food, you need to
-
forget these things, you forget your roles, because now this
-
is a time for this intense spiritual discipline. And they
-
were leading many people in Karrent away from that from
-
these things. We see this throughout First Corinthians. Paul explaining
-
that they were doing this by manipulating scripture. By the way,
-
in Ephesians two five through six, the passage says, even
-
when we were dead in our trespasses, he made us
-
alive together in Christ. By grace, you've been saved and
-
raised us up with him. They were using that say, see,
-
you were deading trespassing sins, but by grace, you've been
-
saved and you've been raised. It's not a future raising,
-
it's a present raising. And so they manipulated scripture to
-
justify this present spirituality. They also use scripture to justify
-
how the roles of men and women have changed, and
-
that you don't have to be married. And you know
-
where they got that from. They got it from Galatians
-
three twenty eight. There's neither June nor Greek, nor slave
-
nor free, nor there's male or female. You're all one
-
in Christ Jesus. And they would use that twisting that
-
scripture a CC. We're in the present resurrection and now
-
there's no male or female. You don't need a husband,
-
you don't need to have children, you don't need food.
-
This is the time. And I want you to understand
-
this something. As we think about this, these teachings of
-
these false teachers, you're seeing what false teachers are doing.
-
What are they doing. They're using scripture and they're twisting
-
scripture to what justify their false teaching. That's what false
-
teachers did in the New test Cement, and listen to
-
me today, that's what false teachers are still doing today.
-
Paul in this passage Scripture is then because he knows
-
these things are happening in the church. In Ephesus, he's
-
right into Timothy and he's saying, you have to understand,
-
these things are happening in the church. There's women who
-
are giving up their roles to marry, they're giving up
-
their roles to have children they're given, they're abstaining from food.
-
They think that this is right, and they're disputing their roles.
-
And so Paul writes to explain is what is proper,
-
what is proper for worship? And so he's establishing what's
-
proper works and what's proper roles for who for godly women.
-
Notice that as we come to this passage in verse five,
-
I'm sorry, not verse five in verse ten, but with
-
what is proper for women who profess God ing this
-
with good works. So I want you to hear this heart.
-
As we come to this passage. Listen, I'm very fully
-
aware that this is probably this may be one of
-
the most debated sermons I've ever preached. I know that
-
you probably know that you've heard it probably your whole life.
-
And listen, I've been a pastor long enough. It's probably
-
the most debated sermon I've ever preached, and it will
-
probably be the most debated sermon I preached in twenty
-
years from now. Right. It's been a topic has been
-
heavily debated ever since I've been in ministry, So let's
-
understand that. But because it becomes so debated and it
-
can be some heated, sometimes we don't see the parastoral
-
heart behind Paul. What is Paul's heart is he wants
-
to care for the women in the church, and that's
-
his heart here versus you see that but with those
-
who are proper, for women who profess godly with good works,
-
and then he's shepherding. He first starts out with verse
-
eleven and explaining what was proper for women. First, he
-
explains what they should do. He says, let a woman
-
learn quietly with all submissiousness. He starts off with, listen,
-
what do you think it is important as we think,
-
just walk through this passage. He first begins by commanding
-
them to learn. Paul wants ladies to learn. He wants
-
to learn in church. It's important for him for you
-
to understand. His heart is for ladies in the church,
-
women in the church to learn. I think you have
-
to understand. This is a foreign concept to us. But
-
in early New Testament times, in many sects of Judaism,
-
there was an idea by many of those that women
-
were not to learn, that women were forbidden to learn,
-
that it was not good for women to learn. That's
-
not Paul's heart here. Paul believes that women are to learn,
-
and that we are the church, are to equip but
-
we are to teach. We are to lead women to learn.
-
But then he describes here it's not only that she's
-
to learn, but it's really important for how she's to learn.
-
Paul uses the word quietly here, listen to let the
-
woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. The word quietly means
-
silence or quiet. It could be it can have the
-
sense of peaceable ones. What paul concern is is that
-
there's women in the church who are not learning quietly.
-
You say, what do you mean by that, pastor, there
-
are people who there's ladies in the church and Ephesus
-
at the time who had followen these false teachers, and
-
they're questioning what the Bible says. And furthermore, they're disputing
-
what the pastors and the different leaders of the church
-
and what the Bible says, and they're combating the teaching
-
of the church, and they're disputing that. And Paul is saying, listen, ladies,
-
God's God wants you to learn, but you're not to
-
dispute what the word of God says. And now I
-
would say that's important for not just ladies, were all
-
of us not to dispute what God's word says. And
-
these ladies were doing that. So he's confronting that. I remember,
-
by the way, I'll just show you where we see
-
this also in scripture that I you say, how do
-
you know it was the ladies who were doing this?
-
And in one Timothy five thirteen, he's just besides that
-
they've learned. They there are women are learning going about
-
from house to house, not only idlers but also gossips
-
and busy bodies saying listen to this, saying what they
-
should not. He's talking about the ladies there in First
-
Timothy five and Second Timothy. Paul also says in chapter three,
-
verse six and seven, from among them are those who
-
crept in households and the captured weak women, burdened with
-
sins and led astray by various passions, always learning, and
-
they were never able to arrive at a knowledge of truth.
-
So he's explaining, there's many of these ladies who have
-
got caught up in these false teachings. They're being led
-
astray by these false teachers, and they're learning, but they're
-
able to never really come to the truth. And some
-
of these leaders are the ones who are saying what
-
they ought not to say. I can remember there's different
-
things that happened in ministry, and you're like, you know,
-
I remember when that happened. I remember I was at
-
my first church out a seminary, and I was a
-
young pastor learning what was proper for young pastors. And
-
we had business meetings. You remember business meetings. They're such
-
a blessing, right, And I remember we're in a business
-
meet and there was this lady and I cannot remember
-
her name right now, but I can see her, and
-
she was a she was a pastor's wife. Her husband
-
was a pastor and he was retired, and they were
-
in our church there at Hickory Grove, and she had
-
gotten into she had gotten upset about something and I remember,
-
you think I'll never forget this. She was sitting at
-
her on the right side and not pick on those
-
who are on the right side. In the middle of
-
the business meet, she got up. I'm not kidding. I'm
-
gonna demonstrate what she did. She went up to the pulpit.
-
Preci there's a pulpit. She stood in front of the
-
tire church and she pointed his her finger at him
-
and she let him have it for ten minutes. I
-
have no idea to this day what she said, but
-
I know how she said it. I want you to
-
understand that if you think, man, that would be that
-
would be awful to see that happen in the church.
-
I want you to understand that that's what's happening here.
-
There's there's women in the church who are disputing pastors
-
on what the Bible says. And he's saying, listen, ladies,
-
I want you to learn. But but you're but but
-
it's not right for you to come and dispute the
-
pastors and the leaders in the church. You learn quietly.
-
But also he explains he wants someone to learning submission.
-
What is submission? Thought about that? What is submission? Submission
-
almost becomes like a bad word. You know, we've our
-
world made it a submission. No, pre're gonna talk abou submission.
-
What is some Well, submission is the proper response of
-
a Christian or someone godly to those who are an
-
authority over them. Let's hear that again. Submission is the
-
proper response of a Christian to those who are an
-
authority over them. You know, God's created roles, God's created
-
authority in all different realms. Right, we have authority in government.
-
Right we have rulers, we have mayors, we have city
-
officials in our community here, and we are called to
-
submit to those in authority over us in government, aren't
-
we We have authority in our lives. First Titus tells
-
us that not first Titus, just Titus. There's only one Titus.
-
Titus three one says, remind them to submissive to rulers
-
and authority. Too obedient to be ready for every good work. Sad.
-
You know, as a Christian, God's called Judas c. Emit
-
every one of you, male a female. God's come all
-
judas men, God's come all judas ment and it's the
-
Christian response for you to submit to those who are
-
authority of year in government. Now it only stops there,
-
But listen, you know, I know you do have jobs,
-
and you know in your job, God's put someone in
-
authority over you. He's called your boss. And you know
-
it's times that your boss wants you to do something.
-
You're like, I really don't want to do that. But
-
you know it is the right thing as a Christian
-
for me to obey my boss as I would obey
-
the Lord. And that's what Ephesians talks about in Ephesians five.
-
Do you know in the home God's created spiritual leaders.
-
The husband and wives are too in a Christian response
-
to submit to their husbands, who God places in the
-
authority as a spiritual leader. And that's a proper response
-
for her. Right Listen, men, don't don't look at her
-
and say, hey, look at you. Hear what he said? Listen,
-
God called you to submit as a husband who's your leader, Christ?
-
And you should submit your life to Christ. And you
-
as a listen, as a man of God, she should
-
be following. And as you are submitting your life to
-
Christ and following Christ, then you're setting the example for
-
her to follow. So listen, she's not doing something that
-
you should not already be being the example for her
-
to follow. Do you see that? And so listen. It's
-
the godly response of a husband to submit to his head.
-
It's a proper response. And who is his head as Christ?
-
And she's submit to her husband as he follows Christ.
-
And then there's the church. You know, there's authority here.
-
I'm one of them. I'm one of the elders. God's
-
past authority structure here, there's elders, there's deacons, and God's
-
called you to submit to that. And it's a proper
-
response for us as a Christian. That's saying, you know what, God,
-
You've placed people with arty all the way through my life.
-
It's a teacher at school, it's a it's a police
-
officer in our community. It's a a mayor, it's a governor,
-
it's a president. It's proper for me submit to those,
-
even sometimes I don't maybe agree with them or understand them,
-
but God, You've given them to me to shepherd me.
-
And God is proper for me to do that. You
-
ever heard someone it said that someone's full of the
-
Holy Spirit, and you look at that person, they just
-
they're just full of the Holy Spirit. Man, they just
-
exude Jesus. I mean, just the Spirit's just all over them. Well,
-
you know, in Ephesians chapter five, Paul's talking about that.
-
Paul's talking about how believers are to be filled with
-
the spirit and walk in the spirit. I think if
-
you think about that, if someone feel with the spirit,
-
and someone who's faithful to live by the spirit, guided
-
by the spirit, and and Paul and for Ephesians five,
-
he's talking to the Church of Ephesus, who is Timothy pastoring.
-
In one Timothy Ephesus and Ephesians is passed first letter
-
to the church Timothy. One Timothy is paused letter to
-
the pastor of the Church of Ephesus. But in his
-
first letter Ephesians, he's talking to them about how important
-
it is how they live, how they walk, how they
-
live their life. He talks about how important of them
-
that the days are evil, that you live as wise
-
and not as unwise. He talks to them how important
-
it is for them to know what the will of
-
the Lord is. I want you to term with me,
-
turned with me to this passage, because I think it's
-
so important for us to see this. He says in
-
chapter five, sirn in verse fifteen, again, I won't you
-
hear this. He's talking about how important it is for
-
them how they live their life, how they walk. He says,
-
look carefully how you walk, not as unwise, but as wise,
-
making the best use of your times, because those the
-
days are evil. Verse sixteen says and verse seventeen says, therefore,
-
do not be foolish, but understand what the will of
-
the Lord is. And then he explains, all right, hey,
-
let's live wise, let's not live as unwise. We are
-
to understand what the will of the Lord is. And
-
then he describes what is the will of the Lord is. Listen,
-
don't get drunk with wine, for that's debakery, but be
-
filled with the spirit. What is God's will for you?
-
You ask me? You come into the service today and say, pastor,
-
What's God's will for my life? Can I tell you
-
right now? In Ephesius chapter five, the Lord is about
-
to tell you what the will of the Lord is
-
for your life. And you know what it is is
-
that you're to be walking the spirit. It's you're to
-
be filled with the spirit. He says, don't get drunk
-
with wine. Don't get drunk with wine. Is an analogy,
-
it's an illustration. Right. If you get drunk with wine, right,
-
and you get drunk, what happens? Alcohol starts taking care
-
over your body. And then what guess what? You're not
-
in control of your members or your facilities. Right, the
-
alcohol's in control. And he's saying, just in the same way,
-
you should not be drunk with wine. What I do
-
want you to do. It's only you to be filled
-
with the Holy Spirit, so full of the Holy Spirit,
-
that the Holy Spirit is in power in your life,
-
is in control in your life, and it's leading your life.
-
And then he starts talking about what it looks like
-
when you're filled with the spirit, when you're full of
-
the spirit, and he's just taking control of your life.
-
What are the things that you do? And then he
-
lists those things. Listen to this. I lost my place.
-
I got so excited, he says, verse eighteen. Don't get
-
drunk with wine, but that for that is the barkra.
-
But be filled with the spirit. Addressing one another in songs,
-
him spiritual songs. Singing, making melody to the Lord with
-
your heart. Well, one of the ways when you feel
-
with the spirit, the spirit's moving your life. Man, you
-
got a song in your heart, singing about the Lord
-
throughout the day, singing about the Lord. When you come
-
in on Sunday mornings, God's got a song in your heart.
-
Twenty Since we give thanks for every good thing, not
-
only words their song in the heart, but we have
-
a heart of gratitude where we continue to give God
-
thanks for things he's doing our life. That's what it
-
looks like to be filled with the spirit. Listen what
-
he else He says, given thanks for every good thing.
-
That God's the Father and the name of the Lord
-
Jesus Christ. You know, in another aspect of being filled
-
with the spirit, not only do we sing, don't we
-
give thanks, but we submit. Woh oh wait, wait, preacher,
-
you're taking a turn there. That's what it says. Listen,
-
submitting to one another out of reverence of Christ. And
-
then verse twenty two and on he goes after our
-
example after example, why submit to your husband as unto
-
the Lord? Listen to the pastores read it with me.
-
Why submit to your husband as to the Lord, for
-
your husband is the head of the wife, even as
-
Christ is the head of the Church, and his body
-
is himself as Savior. Now church submits to Christ. So
-
also wives should submit in everything to their husband's husband.
-
Love your wives, as Christ loved the Church, gave himself
-
for her, that he might sanctify of her, having cleansing
-
her by the washing of water and the word, so
-
he might present her to the Church himself in splendor,
-
without spot or wrinkle, in any such thing, that she
-
might be holy without blemish. And the same way husbands
-
love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves
-
his wife loves himself. No one ever hated his own flesh,
-
but nourishes and cherishes just as christ Us, because we
-
are a member of his body. And then he goes
-
into verse Chapter six. Children, obey your parents and the Lord,
-
for this is right. Honor your father and mother, that
-
may go well with you, and that you might live
-
alone in the land. Fathers, don't provoke your children to anger.
-
Verse five. Slaves, obey your masters, earthly masters, with fear
-
and trembling with the sincere heart. He goes into thing
-
after thing. He goes into different area from why submitting
-
to their husband, to husbands submitting to Christ, the church,
-
submitting to Christ, children submitting to their parents. You see that,
-
You see one of the ways that we live a
-
spirit filled life. It's submitting to those who God's put
-
in our place. You know, I remember, and I may
-
have told you this story before, So forgive me if
-
you heard it before. Laugh like you didn't hear it before.
-
It kind of helped me out here. You know, it's
-
a tough sermon. I remember when I was a little boy, Saturdays,
-
you know, Saturdays is you know, it's supposed to be
-
a great day. You know, you're out of school, it's
-
a free day. And I'd be woken up to a
-
song by my mother and I won't sing it because
-
I don't want to torture you with it. But she's
-
sang this song, and she sang it every Saturday to
-
kind of get us all reped up. You know what
-
she was getting reving this up for. I'll called it torture.
-
She called it chores. And so every Saturday, whether we
-
liked it or not, the Barbie household was going to
-
clean the house. That means Jonathan was going to clean
-
his room. I really think there's some certain things that
-
Satan put on this earth, and I believe dusting is
-
one of them. A pledge is from the devil. I
-
just believe it is. I mean it just it doesn't
-
make any thing sense. Why do you have to remove
-
everything off a counter. You got to move it all
-
off there, and you got to get this lemon spray
-
and wipe your hand over it, and then you got
-
to put everything back on that same table you just
-
took it off. Just leave it there. The dust ain't
-
hurting anything. Never made me sick. I don't think right.
-
But mamould make us dust the room. We'd make you vacuum,
-
make me pick up all my toys, make me make
-
my bed, maybe take out the trash. And I could
-
not stand it. I hated saturdays. And you know why,
-
because Saturdays I didn't want to do that. I didn't want.
-
What I wanted to do was play. I wanted my
-
free time. I wanted my freedom. But guess what God
-
gave me a mom. And I would submit to my mom.
-
And you know why, you ever had you ever had
-
a child, and I know all your kids are perfect.
-
You never had that. You ever asked your kid do something.
-
They just fall out, Well, let me do that? What
-
I don't want to do that? You know, what is it? Why?
-
Why do they go that? Why do they do that? Why?
-
Because in every one of us, listen, there is a
-
desire in us to do what we want to do,
-
and listen when when we come to the word of
-
God and God tells us, listen, husbands, submit to Christ.
-
Live your life following me. We as men. At times,
-
whether you want to realize it or not, you stick
-
your foot in the ground. He says, I don't want
-
to do that. Why because you want to live your
-
life your way. And it's the same thing. We can
-
go from husbands, we can go to wives. We can
-
go to church leaders whose church members who say, I
-
don't want I don't agree with what that church is doing.
-
And when it comes down to us in the heart
-
of our hearts, the reason why we don't want to
-
obey is listen, because we don't want to surrender to
-
the will of the Holy Spirit. But also we want
-
to surrender not to the will of the Holy Spirit.
-
We want to surrender to our will, our wants, our desire.
-
And Paul is saying here, listen, if we're gonna if
-
we're gonna live how we ought to live, if we're
-
going to be godly as we want to be godly,
-
it starts with saying, God, I surrender my will to
-
your will. Lord, and God, I know you put people
-
over me, and Lord, I'm going to surrender. I'm going
-
to not surrender. I'm going to submit to those who
-
you put in my over me to care for me
-
because I know it's for my good. I know it's
-
for my good. I want you to move on. I
-
want us to move on because I've got a lot
-
to cover. If you're listening fast and I need to
-
talk faster. We need to listen. We must worship with
-
proper submission, but also we need to proper worship with
-
proper authority. Look, look here what Paul does here. Oh
-
I've got to go fast. I got a lot to
-
talk about here. Let's let's let's go Paul. I want
-
you to understand here real quick, Paul. What Paul's doing
-
here is establishing what is proper works and proper roles
-
for Godliness. Now with the understanding of proper submission, now
-
Paul dresses what is proper teaching. Think about this as
-
you think about this passage. Paul is transitioning from one
-
activity that women are to carry out. What is that activity?
-
Learn and learn quietly? Right, that's an activity that he's
-
encouraging them to do. Right now, he moves to two
-
actions that they're prohibited in him. Why they're prohibiting of
-
these actions in order for them to maintain their submission.
-
You understand that if you do these things here, it
-
subverts you being. You're calling to submit to those who
-
are in charge of you. And I want you to
-
think this is don't just think here when you come
-
to this passage. This is about women obeying their husbands.
-
This here is about the women who are what they're
-
they're they're disobeying not just their husband, They're not they're
-
not They're disputing not just their husbands here, they're disputing
-
the church leaders here. And so that's the issue here.
-
So so Paul transitioned from one activity that they are
-
to carry out and he's encouraging two actions that they've
-
they've prohibited. Notice, as you come to this passage, and
-
I know this is the this is the thickest part
-
of it. Okay, I'm gonna go fast. Listen fast, Paul
-
doesn't say you ought not to or I don't think
-
epics should do this. Notice this is his first person, Paul,
-
an apostle and the father of the church at Ephesus.
-
You understand he did start this church. And this is
-
what Paul says. In prohibiting. He prohibits two functions. Two functions.
-
Paul prohibits women, and he says, in this let's read it.
-
Let a woman learn quietly with all submissions submificit submissiveness
-
verse twelve. I do not permit a woman to teach
-
or exercise authority of her man, whether she's remain quiet.
-
So one he prohibits women to teach or preach over men.
-
I think it's to understand. It's important to understand what
-
what does this? When you come to this passage and
-
I tell you we could take another hour on this
-
and I won't do that. Just calm down. There will
-
be another rebellion here. I'm just kidding, y'all need to
-
lighten up. Okay, help me out here. What is this?
-
Every every part of this passage, I mean, every word
-
in this passage of scripture is debated. I'm just telling
-
you there are I want to tell you real quick today.
-
I know full well that there's other arguments about everything
-
I'm about to say that I'm not giving to you.
-
And the reason why is that I just don't have
-
time to tell you every false teaching that's out there
-
about this passage of scripture. But you do need to
-
know that because you're going to hear it. Trust me
-
Wednesday night, this Wednesday night at six thirty to come
-
and I will give you all the different other theories
-
about this passive scripture. But I cannot do that this morning.
-
But one of the questions is what does Paul mean
-
by teach? Right? What is he talking about teaching? Here?
-
The word teaching the New Testament describes as careful transmission
-
of the tradition of Jesus and the authoritative proclamation of
-
God's will to believers. In light of that tru transmission,
-
we would see those word used in One Timothy four
-
eleven command and teach these things and acts to forty two.
-
And they devoted themselves to the apostles, teaching and the fellowship.
-
So teaching, probably plainly understood for you and I, is
-
really the the idea of preaching. It is the teaching
-
is in scripture. Here is plainly restricted to certain individuals
-
who have the gift of teaching. So we understand that
-
and as elders, and we're going to look at that
-
later on. We see that by the way in Ephesians
-
four eleven he gives the apostles and the prophets and
-
evangelists and shepherds and teachers we see. We see that
-
in second Timothy four to two, preach the word be
-
ready in the season, analyses and approve, rebuke, or exhort
-
with complete patience and teaching. So Paul is prohibiting women
-
from teaching here, but I think it's important the object
-
of their teaching is he's saying the women should never teach.
-
That's not what Paul is saying here. What Paul is
-
saying here though, that women should not teach over men.
-
That a woman, I do not permit a woman to
-
teach or exercise authority, And there's the object of that
-
at the end of the sentence, over a man. So
-
what Paul is saying here is that he's prohibiting women
-
from teaching the teaching role of the church and to
-
teach over men. And so it's not proper for women
-
who profess godliness to preach. If they do preach, what
-
are they doing. They're subverting their role in submitting to
-
those who are an authority over them. It's hurting that
-
you're you're surpassing that if you will and so and
-
we see this was a problem, by the way, and
-
Titus to and I won't go and share that again,
-
but he was saying, yeah, so anyway, the second function
-
that Paul prohibits women in this passage is to have
-
authority over men. These two go hand in hand, right,
-
He says in verse twelve, do not permit a woman
-
to teach her exercise authority over man. Rather, she is
-
to remain quiet. Authority here again another word that's very debated.
-
Authority means just very simply to have authority over you.
-
Kind of think about what does that mean, What does
-
it mean to in a church setting? Again, because this
-
is a church setting, what kind of functions in the
-
modern church that that Paul would be prohibiting a woman
-
to have authority over a man. In the pastoral letters
-
of Paul, the governing authority or the governing activity is
-
subscribed to the elders. In one Timothy three another reference
-
to Timothy, for someone who does not know how to
-
manage his own wholes household. Talking about elders, how does
-
he care for God's church? It's understanding that it was
-
the role of the elders to care for the church.
-
They were an authority. There were the shepherds, and on
-
Timothy five seventeen, let the elders who rule well considered
-
to be worthy of double honor, especially those who labor
-
and preaching and teaching. So in some churches this role
-
of authority and also this role of authority but also preaching,
-
I think there are two separate things, right. It's not
-
that she's just not to preach, she also is not
-
to have authority. Some women may not have been teaching,
-
but they were trying to maybe a rule or have authority.
-
And he's prohibiting both here. And some churches it's elders.
-
But you know there are other churches, especially in the
-
Southern Bads Convention, where the churches don't have elders, and
-
so deacons are the governing body of that church. And
-
so there that's what Paul is prohibiting there. And again
-
why what's the purpose is because he's called God's called
-
you to submit to those who were in authority. They
-
were disputing the leaders of the church, and he's like,
-
so listen, you don't do these things because it subverts
-
your calling to submit to those who are an authority
-
over you. Then Paul outlines and we knew quickly go
-
through these. Paul outlet lines of reasons why, and let
-
me explain these two reasons why. Paul says in this passage, listen,
-
verse twelve, I do not permit a woman to teach
-
her exercise authority of a man. Rather, she's remain quiet.
-
You see how he's bringing the quietness back into the picture. Right.
-
This opposes what you what God's called you to do,
-
and that's to learn quietly instead of disputing. Then he
-
goes into the reasons thirteen and fourteen. For Adam was
-
from form first, then Eve. So two reasons why Paul prohibits.
-
One is God's created a order. In verse thirteen, Paul
-
is explaining why women are not to teach or have
-
authority of her men. Why first, because Adam was born first.
-
You remember the Old Testament, the first born of a
-
family had the birthright and they had authority to lead
-
the family. And so we know that part of God's
-
design was that God creative work. He created a creative order.
-
He created man to be first, Adam first, to be
-
the provider, protector and the spiritual leader of the home.
-
And so he's referencing that why is she not to lead?
-
Why does she not have authority? It's because God created
-
man with the calling to lead the home and also
-
the church. And so he's calling upon that creative order.
-
B EA's deception. And there's different theories on what Paul
-
means here, but look at what he says here in
-
verse fourteen Adam, verse thirteen, he says Adam was from first,
-
and then Eve and then fourteen, and Adam was not deceived,
-
but the woman who was deceived became the transgressor. And
-
so then he talks about E's deception, how she and
-
he's referring, you have to understand here's he's building an
-
argument why women are not to preach or to have
-
authority over men? And what is his justification? What is
-
his arguments? And his argument goes back to the very beginning.
-
He doesn't go to something going on there. He goes
-
back to where God created things, and he says, one
-
is god creative order. But secondly, because of Eve's deception.
-
There's two different thoughts about what Eve's deception is. Some
-
would say, I don't agree with this theory, but I'm
-
just telling you what the interpretations are. Some would say
-
this is the nature of women. Some would say that
-
Paul is describing the nature of women, meaning that women
-
are more easily deceived than men, and because women have
-
a predisposition to deception, Paul is prohibiting them from teaching
-
or having authority. I don't believe that's what Paul is
-
talking about here, but that is a theory by some.
-
Some would say this is the nature of deception. Think
-
about it. Eve's in the garden, right, Adam tells her
-
what Adam think about it? Spiritual leader, God's called God
-
disciples Adam. Before Eve came along, he told him, all right,
-
this is the tree if good and evil, don't eat that.
-
Then Adam goes to Eve and says, hey, she comes along, Hey,
-
this is this Guard's wonderful, but this is the tree
-
of good and evil. You don't need to eat of it.
-
When Serpent came along, what did he say? Is that
-
really what God said? Is that really what God says?
-
And furthermore, do you really need to listen to him. Hey,
-
I'm telling you something. And so part of Satan's deception.
-
Understand this is not only to doubt the word of God,
-
but also to rebel against God's creative design. And so
-
what Paul was bringing out here is listen, she was
-
deceived and she's just eved in thinking. Listen, if I
-
don't obey God's design, it'll be okay. And look what
-
what look at the destruction that it brought along. Women
-
don't fall into this trap too. Listen to the passage.
-
It says, and Adam was not deceived, but the woman
-
was even became the transgression. There's this, you know, I
-
really believe for for all of us, really, there really,
-
there is this innate desiring us to say, you know what,
-
we really don't have to do it God's way. We
-
don't have to really follow God's design. I don't really
-
have to For husbands here, I don't really have to
-
follow what God's word says for me. Uh. For for
-
you ladies, I don't really have to follow him as
-
my spiritual leader. For children, I don't really have to
-
pay my parents. My parents think they know it all.
-
They don't know nothing. I know what's best for me.
-
There is desire in all of us not to submit,
-
to say, you know what, God really doesn't know best
-
when he created things the way he did. I know
-
better than God, and I don't I can reject his order.
-
There was a captain of a ship one day, and
-
he was in the dark night, and it was kind
-
of a mist over the sea, and he was in
-
a boat. He was in the battleship, and he looked
-
out in the distance and there was a light, faint light.
-
It was headed straight through his boat. He sent on
-
a message under a signal man, and he says, after you,
-
all to your course, calling out to the light ahead
-
of him, Off to your course by ten degrees Promptly,
-
the return came back by someone else, off to your
-
course by ten degrees north. The captain was angered. He says,
-
he commands. He says, he's ignoring my commands. He sent
-
out his second message. He says, all to your course
-
by ten degrees south. I am the captain. Soon after
-
the message received, off to your course ten degrees north.
-
I'm a sea man third class Jones. Immediately captain sent
-
a third message, knowing that fear would have voked all
-
to your course ten degrees south, I am a battleship.
-
The reply came all to your ten degrees north, I
-
am I'm a lighthouse. You know the truth is, many
-
times when we come to these things, we're saying, we're battling.
-
Who are we boutling? In? This is God? And we're
-
saying to God, God, I really don't have to accept
-
your creative order, your plan. I really can do it
-
my way. But listen, God knows best, and there is health,
-
and there's growth, and there's Godliness and there's the spirit.
-
In saying, God, I'm going to surrender to how God
-
you created things and know you know what's best for me.
-
Ask you today, some God's play someone in authority over you. Husbands,
-
it's the Lord. Maybe a boss could be a church
-
leader could be your husband, Students could be your parents.
-
How are you resisting? How are you resisting the temptation
-
to reject those who are leading over you and the
-
authority which God's placed over you. God has sent them
-
to care for you, lead you, protect you. How do
-
you submit to them and reject the temptation to abandon
-
what God's put over you. I'm just finish. I am
-
way over time. But you're gracious to me. Thank you.
-
I do want to finish with want you to see
-
the last passage. I think it's important for us she
-
is to see that. Just understand what he's talking about quickly.
-
Here he says he will she will be saved through
-
child bearing. Yet, let's just bring the thought together. It's
-
good Verse thirteen, for Adam was from first and then Eve,
-
and Adam was not deceived, but the woman would deceive
-
who became the transgressior. Yet, referring to the transgression of Eve,
-
he's seeing she will be saved through child bearing if
-
they continue in the faith and love and holiness and
-
self control. And you're probably saying, as most people who
-
read this, like, what in the world is he talking about?
-
How is a woman saved through child bearing? Well, I
-
think it's important to understand there's two different theories on
-
this one. Some say this is Mary, all right. See
-
Paul's referring to Eve, who brought sin into the world.
-
Now you're first to another woman named Mary who, through
-
childbirths you would have a child named Jesus, and he would,
-
through the virgin birth, would live the sinless life, and
-
he would live and die and raise again and it's
-
through his life and the birth of Him and him living,
-
dying and raise again that all of us are saved.
-
So some would say women aren't saved through childbirth, but
-
through the birth of Jesus we are all saved. So
-
some would say that would be what Paul is referring to.
-
Some would say this is the work of sinking effaction
-
certification that Paul is talking about. In a New Testament,
-
salvation means more than just the moment we get saved. Right.
-
Most often when the word salvation is used in the
-
New Testament and covers the entire life of a crew.
-
For instance, Philippians two twelve, pauls tells us to work
-
out our salvation what with fear and trembling. He's not
-
talking about an instance that we came to Christ. He's
-
talking about the salvation of our entire life and the
-
work of sanctification. And so what he's talking about here
-
is he's saying that here these ladies again they're disputing
-
the leaders of the church, and not only disputing, but
-
they've abandoned getting married, they've abandoned having children, they've abandoned
-
these different things. And Paul has told us that some
-
have followed Satan were doing these things. And Paul is saying, listen,
-
God's called you. God's called you. God's given you a
-
God given role to lead your family, to have children,
-
to nurture children, and the adminition of the Lord. And
-
part of you working out your salvation is continuing in
-
that faith, continuing that calling and that love and that holiness.
-
I think a great example of that is Lois in Unus.
-
You remember that who was Lois in Unis? You say,
-
Lewis in Uness is Timothy's grandma and mother? Do you
-
know Timothy's father was an unbeliever. Timothy, the pastor of
-
this church, was raised by a godly mom. And about
-
golly grandma, And Paul says Timothy one time, Timothy, continue
-
into faith, the faith that you first found in your
-
mother and your grandmother. You see, his grandmother and mother
-
were a demonstration of women who don't reject their roles,
-
but accepted their roles that God called them to and
-
use it to train up their children in the ways
-
of the Lord. You know, as we finished this passage
-
to this morning, I just really challenge you this morning
-
this as God called us a walk into spirit, may
-
we walk into spirit. Husbands, we need men of God
-
to lead their families. I encourage you, husbands, to look
-
at your wife today and realize you to be that
-
godly man. She needs you to be a man that
-
submits to the Lord and follows the Lord. And she
-
needs a man who sets the example of what it
-
means is submit to Christ. Would you do that today? Men,
-
students surrendered, to submit to your parents, the God's authorities
-
that God's put in your place. How are you living
-
out Godliness through submission? And then, lastly, how are you
-
rejecting the temptation to reject the authority that God's put
-
in place for you, whether it's home, or whether it's school,
-
where it's at work, wherever it may be. How are
-
you rejecting that temptation to reject the authority that God's
-
put in your life? You know the greatest example of this,
-
and I ask the band to make their way up.
-
What's the greatest example of proper submission and authority in scripture?
-
Thought about it? Greatest example in all of scripture a
-
submission Jesus. You know the Bible says this in one
-
Corinthia is eleven. But I want you to understand that
-
the head of every man is Christ, the head of
-
a wife as her husband, and the head of Christ
-
is God. You know, when Jesus was on this earth,
-
he says, I've come down from heaven not to do
-
my will, but the will of the one who sent me.
-
You remember in the garden of Yosemite, when he's he's
-
taking on your sin and our sin, and it's the
-
weight of that is coming upon him. He says, Father,
-
if you're willing to remove this cup from me, nevertheless,
-
not my will, but your will be done. You see,
-
Jesus was the greatest example of submission when he submitted
-
to the Father for your sins. May today we follow
-
our savior and saying, God, help me follow your example
-
and submit to you Christ what I need. You help
-
me resist the temptation to reject those are authority over me. Lord,
-
Today I want to walk in your spirit. Would you
-
pray with me? Lord? We love you, We thank you
-
Lord for this morning. We thank you Lord for this
-
message Lord that you've led us to. Lord. I pray
-
that we would be people Lord, that would be not
-
just be hears of your word, but doers of your word.
-
And God, we would live out your word that you've
-
spoken today. God, we thank you, Lord for your calling
-
upon us. We thank you, Lord for what you've created. Lord,
-
I pray we live in light of that. Lord. We
-
acknowledge a day where we're all sinners, and we all
-
Lord want to resist. Lord, you're leading in our life.
-
We don't resist those that you put in authority over us, Lord,
-
because Lord, we want our way. We want to live
-
by our rules and our will. Lord, just as Christ
-
submitted to you. Lord, Father, may we submit our lives
-
to you, Father, and Lord, that you receive all the
-
praise and all our glory from it. In your name,
-
we pray, and all to him
