  1. If you have your bibles, if your turned with me

  2. to Timothy one Timothy chapter three. This morning, we're going

  3. to start in verse eight. First Timothy chapter three, starting

  4. in verse eight. You know there's in the great work

  5. of the movie Peter Pan. Remember the movie Peter Pan,

  6. the Little Disney Movie, and Peter Pan in one moment,

  7. tells John to take the boys and lead them, and

  8. they do a game. You remember the game follow the Leader.

  9. You played that game, Follow the Leader. What is the

  10. premise of the game. The premise of the game, or

  11. what Peter was getting John to do, is for a

  12. leader to be chosen, and the leader leads their group

  13. on where to go and then how to go. And

  14. so when the leader jumps, everyone who's followed behind jumps.

  15. When the leader squats down, all the those who are

  16. following squad down. The premise of the game is that

  17. the leader sets the example, and everyone who's following the

  18. leader follows his example. You know, that's not only something

  19. for Peter Pan. It's not only a game for children.

  20. But in the Bible, God chooses to select two leaders

  21. for the church, and the role for these leaders are

  22. not only to have duties, but they are to be

  23. an example. There to be leaders who accept an example.

  24. I have.

  25. Believers are to live their life, and they are to

  26. go ahead of the congregation, and they are to lead

  27. by example. And the example they set for our godliness

  28. is the example that church members that we as believers

  29. should follow to leaders that God ordains. As we come

  30. to first Timothy, are elders or overseers, or pastors and deacons.

  31. Those are the two offices that.

  32. God gives us, elders and deacons. John Maxwell said once

  33. about leaders. A leader is one who knows the way,

  34. goes the way, and shows the way.

  35. You know.

  36. It is just like the game. Elders and deacons are

  37. to be men who know the way to go, and

  38. they go that direction and they show others how to

  39. live that example. John Stodd, a great pastor, once said,

  40. the authority by which Christian leaders leads is not power

  41. but love, not force but an example, not coercion, but

  42. reason but reason persuasion. It is the example that elders

  43. and deacons are to set as we come to first Timothy.

  44. Paul was writing to a young pastor named Timothy. He's

  45. he's a pastor over the church in Ephesus, and he

  46. is battling false teaching and false teachers in Ephesus. And

  47. for Paul, the great weapon that God had given to

  48. Timothy in battling the false teaching and false teachers of

  49. the world at the time was godly leaders, the godly

  50. leaders that he had put into the church in Ephesus.

  51. And so he today is is reminding Timothy, Timothy, you're

  52. in war against false teaching and false teachers. One weapon

  53. that God's given you is your leaders, the elders and

  54. the deacons that you have, and how they are to live.

  55. What is faithfulness before the congregation and faithfulness before others.

  56. I remember when I was a little boy, one time

  57. my dad were I was doing something and I had

  58. I'd done something I wasn't supposed to. I don't remember

  59. at the time or today. I don't remember today what

  60. that was, but I remember when Dad disciplment disciplined me

  61. for my misbehavior. I remember saying him, but Daddy, you

  62. do that, well, that ain't governor so well. But I

  63. remember Dad saying these words, don't do as I do,

  64. do as I say. Well, you know that really doesn't

  65. work in the home, nor does it work in the church.

  66. You know, we as.

  67. Leaders need to be leaders who don't tell our church

  68. people what to do, and we don't lead by the

  69. example ourselves.

  70. We need to be elders and deacons.

  71. Who don't say do don't do as I do, do

  72. as I say, but we show how to live.

  73. And that is the example that we see.

  74. Paul set. He lists elders, he lists deacons, and he

  75. set he shows what kind of example there to set today?

  76. This morning?

  77. Do you recognize God's given you elders? Do you recognize

  78. this morning God's given you elders and deacons for example

  79. for you to set before you? You are to follow

  80. their example. Do you recognize their example? Do you follow

  81. their example? Are you deacon here today? Do you know

  82. God's called you to be an example? How are you

  83. faithful to that calling?

  84. Today?

  85. May we follow the leaders that God has given us,

  86. and may we recognize their example that God has set

  87. before us today? Let's read God's word together. First Timothy

  88. Chapter three will start in verse eight. This morning, read

  89. through thirteen. Let's read God's word together. The Bible says

  90. deacons likewise must be dignified, not double tongue, not addicted

  91. to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain. They must

  92. hold the mystery of faith with the clear conscience. Let

  93. them be also be tested first. Then let them service deacons.

  94. If they prove themselves blameless, their wives likewise, must be dignified,

  95. not slanders, but sober minded, faithful in all things. Let

  96. deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children.

  97. Their households well. For those who serve well.

  98. As deacons gain good standing for themselves and also great

  99. confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus. Let's

  100. pray together, Father, we thank you Lord for your word.

  101. We thank you for God, who you've brought into this

  102. place today to worship the men you were watching online

  103. or on TV.

  104. Today.

  105. God, we know that this moment and this passage was

  106. appointed for today, Lord, by your sovereign will and said today.

  107. We know we're not here by chance. God.

  108. We know that you've brought us here Lord to hear

  109. your word. So Lord, I pray that your word today

  110. would speak.

  111. Lord, that you would.

  112. Open our hearts and our minds to your word, that

  113. we would understand rightly what your word says, and Lord

  114. and on we would understand that, by God, we would

  115. apply it to our own lives. That we might follow

  116. the examples that you set before us.

  117. Today.

  118. Lord, we love you, We thank you for your love

  119. for the Church, your love for your people. And Lord, today,

  120. may we be moved by your word today as we.

  121. Look for you.

  122. Lord today, I am a broken week pastor Lord that

  123. desperately needs Lord, your power and your spirit to be

  124. upon me. Lord today, Lord, I pray they're not moved

  125. by my words, or my thoughts or my preparation.

  126. Today.

  127. God, I pray you'd move Lord, your people, by your

  128. spirit and by your word.

  129. So Lord, use me, mold me.

  130. Lord, May I decrease that you might increase today, that

  131. you receive all the praise and the glory from it.

  132. In your name, we pray, Amen.

  133. You may be seated as we come to this passage

  134. of scripture, and we look at the second office of

  135. the church, and that is deacons. The Bible says first

  136. and verse eight deacons. The word deacon there actually means

  137. just in the Greek servant, and the translators would later

  138. on actually because it became an office, would make it

  139. into a word deacon, but in just the Greek. If

  140. you would just look at it and compare that word

  141. that she used about one hundred times in the New Testament.

  142. The word actually just means servant. Give you a few examples.

  143. By the way, the verb form of this word actually

  144. means serve. In Matthew twenty twenty, you remember the disciples

  145. came to Jesus, the sons of Thunder, and they were

  146. asking to say that the right had left of Jesus

  147. when he establish his kingdom. And Jesus says, it's not

  148. mine to give you. But he said this at the

  149. very end of Matthew twenty six. He says, it shall

  150. not be among you, but whoever will be great among

  151. you must be what your servant. That word servant, there's

  152. deacon os. It's the same word that she used. Here's

  153. just means servant. The verb form of that has usually Remember,

  154. Jesus is traveling, he just ministered to share the Gospel

  155. and preaching the sn of God. And he goes to

  156. Peter's house, and Peter's mother in law is sick, you remember,

  157. and he prays over and heals her. And the Bible

  158. says that Matthew eighteen fifteen, he touched her hand and

  159. the fever left her, and she rose and began to

  160. serve him. That is the verb form of deacon os.

  161. It means to serve, to serve a meal, and that's

  162. what she did to Jesus there. So we see that

  163. this term just in the New Testament just means very

  164. simply to serve. And as you come to this passage

  165. of scripture this morning, you see the role of deacon

  166. is is a servant. Their servants of the true elders

  167. are overseers. They're meant to lead and to rule, to

  168. guide the church and the direction that the God has

  169. given it.

  170. But deacons are different. Their role is servants. They are

  171. to serve the church. They are to serve the Lord.

  172. There to serve the church and its members. There's a

  173. few distinctions between. If you compare, you notice these two

  174. offices come back to back.

  175. In First Timothy.

  176. Chapter three, we see elders first and then we see

  177. the office of deacons, and they are very similar you're

  178. going to see today as we walk through these There's

  179. a lot of these qualifications overlap, but there's a few

  180. things that we see in distinction between the elders and

  181. the deacons, and one is elders are there overseers.

  182. They have authority there to exercise authority over the church.

  183. Deacons do not. They do not have that role. They

  184. are servants, you see, elders. One of the qualifications of

  185. the elders they are to be able to teach.

  186. So part of their role is to teach and lead

  187. the church through expositing scripture, understanding scripture. That is not

  188. one of the qualifications of a deacon.

  189. They're not. They do not have to possess the quality

  190. to teach.

  191. And so their their functions a little different, but their

  192. example is not. I think it is very interesting, as

  193. I've said to you last week, Paul understands what is

  194. what is the purpose?

  195. If you walk?

  196. If you read First Timothy? Why did Paul write First Timothy?

  197. Was Paul write First Timothy to combat the false.

  198. Teaching in Ephesus?

  199. He knew, as I said, from the very beginning, he

  200. knew one of the weapons God gave the church and

  201. its battle against false teaching was its leaders, godly leaders.

  202. And so here Paul doesn't focus on the function or

  203. the duties of the deacons.

  204. Or the elders. He functioned.

  205. He focuses on their qualification, how they live their life. Sometimes,

  206. as I said to you last Sunday, sometimes as churches.

  207. We put so much emphasis on the duties of elders

  208. in des and we neglect the quality and the example

  209. that they're set. Can I tell you for Paul how

  210. a pastor and a deacon lived was just, if not

  211. more important, or just as important as what he did.

  212. You see that?

  213. And here that same thing comes for Paul as it

  214. come to deacons. They are to be servants, but they

  215. are to be a model servant. And I want you

  216. to see this morning what that means to be this model,

  217. this example of a servant to the church.

  218. What does that look like?

  219. Look at verse eight, it says deacon likewise must be dignified.

  220. I think it's important as you read that verse, you

  221. see that keyword there, likewise.

  222. Why is Paul use the word likewise.

  223. He's referring back to what he just said about the elders,

  224. what he just said about the overseers. Just as likewise

  225. these they had these qualifications. Likewise, the same qualifications, many

  226. of them, flow to the deacons. Just as the elders

  227. are to be example, likewise, the deacons are.

  228. To be examples.

  229. You remember I said to you last week that the

  230. deacons were to be that the elders would be that

  231. role model that leader followed the leader right, and the

  232. imagery of we see in scripture. I think Paul's outlining

  233. is the elders that set the example that.

  234. The deacons are to follow. The deacons.

  235. The elders set the examples of the deacons are to follow.

  236. The elders set the example that the church members are

  237. to follow. The deacons follow the example of the elders,

  238. and the church members follow the examples of the deacons.

  239. And we see this modeling from all, from from head down,

  240. and it was supposed to flow. It's not supposed to

  241. be just again elders and deacons who lived this way.

  242. It's all of us together, a body of Christ.

  243. All following the example that the Lord has set before us.

  244. So what is this example a we see or first

  245. we see in this passage Scripture one, a model of dignity?

  246. He says, likewise us be dignified. The word dignified means

  247. to be serious. It could be stately if the idea

  248. or the idea is being serious, and means he's serious

  249. in his character. It means someone who who takes things seriously,

  250. if you will. It means a deacon is someone who's

  251. to take his his role in his leading seriously. He's

  252. to take worship seriously. He's to take guiding the church

  253. and being a servant seriously. It's not something that he

  254. should be flipping about. It's something that he should understand

  255. that God's called me as a servant and I need

  256. a lead and I need to be an example of

  257. that at church and outside of church. Heard of a

  258. deacon one time and he sent a message to the

  259. to the church and to his members that he will

  260. be there that day. He had some very important things

  261. that he was sick and he came down with the flu,

  262. and he will be there. One of the church members

  263. came to find out that they saw the deacon wasn't

  264. at home.

  265. He was headed to the ballgame.

  266. So he told the pastor that the deacon wasn't there

  267. and said he was sick, but he was actually went

  268. to the ball game. So the pastor decided to go

  269. to the deacon's house. Went to the house to the

  270. deacon says, I had information that you weren't sick at all,

  271. that actually you went to the to the baseball game.

  272. And he said.

  273. The deacon says, I tell you what I protest that

  274. I have that. I have a picture of that fish

  275. I caught for you, just to show you that.

  276. They were wrong. Okay, you'll catch that later. Hopefully it was.

  277. He wasn't at the ballgame. He was fishing in the pond.

  278. So he did lie. Evidently the imagery. I tell you

  279. that story because it is serious. Sometimes we jokingly passed

  280. by that. Well, the deacons and how how faithful they

  281. are at church, that's not that important. These other things

  282. are not important. How they lead, how they lead by

  283. example and their worship no there to lead as in

  284. a model of dignity, a model of that day. Take

  285. their role serious and their example serious, and how they lead,

  286. and how they guide conversations. There to handle that with dignity,

  287. with seriousness. Secondly, we see that they're a model of discipline.

  288. You see this passage likewise must be dignified. And then

  289. it lists three prohibitions. These are the idea that it's

  290. not just what the deacon does, but also what the

  291. deacon does not do. I think as important as we

  292. think about leaders, and I've told you this last Sunday.

  293. As a pastor, we live in a glass house, and

  294. everything that we do or is examined and how we do,

  295. what we do and what we don't do.

  296. And that also is for deacons.

  297. Deacons, our lives are examined, and they're not only the

  298. church body is not only looking at what you're doing,

  299. but they're also looking at what you're not doing.

  300. And just like the.

  301. Story of the just told you about the deacon says

  302. he was at the had the flu and he skipped church,

  303. and the church members are watching, was he really or

  304. was he really at the ball game?

  305. Where was it really fishing in the lake or really

  306. fishing at the pond.

  307. They are watching, and they're watching on what you're doing,

  308. but they're not watching what you're not doing.

  309. And Paul knows this.

  310. And so Paul says, deacons, there's things that you shouldn't.

  311. Don't mean that you cannot do them, that you can

  312. do these things, but you should not do these things.

  313. And he lists three things.

  314. Number one, they should not be double tongue the term

  315. for double tongue very simply, maybe you shouldn't talk about

  316. of both sides of your mouth. Right, should say one

  317. thing to one person and say another thing to another person. Right,

  318. it's a passage of Matthew five thirty seven says, let

  319. what you say simply be yes or no.

  320. Anything more than this comes from evil.

  321. That's what matt Jesus says in Matthew five thirty seven.

  322. It's the imagery of someone's not being double tongue, not again,

  323. not saying talking out of both sides of your mouth.

  324. I'm not saying one thing in the deacons meeting to

  325. saying another thing to someone else.

  326. Your yes b yes, and your no be noo. I'm

  327. not double tongued.

  328. I think it's so important that that you understand that

  329. as deacons, you are to set that example. But that's

  330. not only for you deacons. It's for us as church members.

  331. We are to be people who are have honesty in

  332. our speech. What we say is true, and we don't

  333. speak out of both sides of our mouth to people

  334. that we are faithful to our word here and outside

  335. of here. Secondly, he's not to be addicted to much

  336. given to much wine is the imagery of the passage here.

  337. I'm not addicted to much wine. It's the idea of

  338. being self control.

  339. Here.

  340. We know in scripture in Romans fourteen twenty one, it's

  341. not good to eat meat or drink wine, or do

  342. anything that causes your brother to stumble. So I think

  343. it's important for you to understand, for an elder, for

  344. a deacon, it's not only a matter of what you do,

  345. but it's what you don't do. In drunkenness, by the way,

  346. is prohibited from all people, whether you're an elder, a deacon,

  347. or church member. We see that command in scripture. But

  348. support for us to understand that people watch what you're doing,

  349. and here for a deacon, they are not to be

  350. associated with someone who's given to too much wine. I

  351. promise you this. I've been in ministry enough to know,

  352. and you know my view on alcohol. I believe in

  353. alcohol abstinence. I believe wishes it stand from alcohol. I

  354. know that's not a popular view today. I know that's

  355. not a popular view in Durham and Raleigh, in our

  356. world today, but I believe for witness sake, we should

  357. have stayed from alcohol. Can you drink, Yes, absolutely you can.

  358. Should you drink?

  359. I don't think you should. And the reason why is

  360. because people are watching how you live your life. I

  361. could tell you how many times I've talked with church

  362. leaders to say, hey, I would encourage you. You need

  363. to stay from alcohol because people are watching. And long

  364. and behold, it'll come up to hey, such and such

  365. saw what saw you on Facebook, and they saw that

  366. picture on that table, and they saw what was on

  367. your table.

  368. It's people were asking about what you're drinking.

  369. Listen, it matters what we do, and it matters what

  370. we don't do, and people are watching, and we don't

  371. want to do anything in our life. Listen, it's going

  372. to cast someone else's stumble and hurt our witness. For Christ,

  373. it's important. It's important to Paul, it should be important

  374. to us. It's important for elders. It's important for deacons.

  375. It should important for it should be important for.

  376. All of us. Second. Third, here, deacons are not greedy,

  377. he says.

  378. He says in this passage of Scripture, I'm not addicted

  379. to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain. It should

  380. be lovers of money. And we see this all throughout Scripture.

  381. Jesus says in Luke sixteen thirteen. No servant can serve

  382. two masters, for either he will hate one and love

  383. the other. He will be devoted to one and des

  384. the other. You cannot serve God and money. He's not

  385. to be a lover of money. We see the love

  386. of money caused so many problems. You think about Judas, Judas,

  387. it was the love of money that he pocketed some

  388. of the money.

  389. Of the disciples.

  390. Right, it was and an incense of fire. Right, that

  391. love money that led them to God's judgment. It's the

  392. love of money that pierces many. Scripture tells us and

  393. that a deacon should not be a lover of money.

  394. He is not to be greedy. But you see not

  395. needs to be a model of dignity. He's a model

  396. of discipline, meanings.

  397. He knows that he has the ability to do many things,

  398. to love many things.

  399. But he is disciplined.

  400. He's disciplined not to love money. He's disciplined not to

  401. be double tongued. He's disciplined not to be addicted to alcohol,

  402. which you see. No, he's a model of dignity, a

  403. model of discipline. But third he's a model of salvation.

  404. Look at this passive scripture of verse nine. It says

  405. they must hold the mystery of the faith with clear

  406. conscious in scripture the idea of mystery. When we think

  407. of mystery, we think of dateline or twenty twenty or

  408. some type of mystery. Here, mystery is not some type

  409. of mystery like we think of. Mystery, was something that

  410. was once hidden but now is revealed. In the idea

  411. of scripture, there were truths about who God was and

  412. God's redentive plan that were mysterious in the Old Testament,

  413. but God revealed in the New Testament. Let's think about

  414. what those ideas are that we're in the Old Testament

  415. that were maybe mysterious to the people of the Old Testament,

  416. but revealed in the New Testament. There was the mystery

  417. of the incarnation. There was the mystery of the indwelling

  418. of the Holy Spirit. They're a mystery of the salvation

  419. of Jews and gentiles in Christ. There was a mystery

  420. of the gold News of the Gospel. There was the

  421. mystery of the second Coming of Christ.

  422. Those are mysteries. There's things that the.

  423. Bible talked about and prophesied, but God's people did not understand.

  424. But in the New Testament we know through Christ all

  425. these things that were once hidden are now revealed. For

  426. Colossians says the mystery Clausian's one twenty six. The mystery

  427. hidden things for ages and generations, but now revealed to

  428. the saints. There are things now that once we're hidden,

  429. are now revealed.

  430. To God's people. And what Paul was saying here.

  431. Is that a deacon must understand these mysteries. And what

  432. is the mystery that Paul says. Deacon should understand. They

  433. should understand clearly the Gospel. Then they should understand the

  434. incarnation of Jesus, that Jesus caught, came, led, and died

  435. and rose again, that we might have forgiveness a sin

  436. and write relationship with Jesus. A deacon must understand the Gospel.

  437. He must understand how we are saved by fate through grace.

  438. A deacon must understand those things. He must hold.

  439. Those as Scripture says, he must hold the mystery of

  440. the faith with clear conscience. The next part of that

  441. is he must understand the Gospel, but he must understand

  442. it with a clear conscious. The clear conscious is the

  443. understand that I really believe that. It means that he

  444. holds it with conviction. He means that he understands it,

  445. but he believes it. What was simple a way to

  446. say that it's not just head knowledge for him. He's

  447. just not someone who's been through Sunday School and been

  448. through Bible study, and he has a head knowledge of

  449. the gospel, but has never impacted his heart. No, it's

  450. one who not only does he understands hard to articulate it.

  451. He understands the truth of the Gospel, but it also

  452. has changed his heart. He holds a clear conscious in it.

  453. He only to be a model of dignity, a model

  454. of discipline. He needs to be a model of salvation.

  455. But fourth, he needs to be a model of maturity.

  456. For Paul knows this deacon must be dignified, disciplined, and

  457. he must.

  458. Be a model of salvation.

  459. He knows the gospel, and he believes the gospel. In

  460. verse ten, he's to be tested, and let him also

  461. be tested, and let them serve as a deacon if

  462. they proved themselves blameless. The imagery here is that he

  463. is to be a man who's been tested. If you

  464. think about scripture, you think about men in the Bible

  465. who were tested.

  466. Before they served.

  467. Joseph served for thirteen years in Egypt before God led

  468. him to be a leader. Moses cared for the sheep

  469. and medium for forty years. Joshua was Moses's servant before

  470. he came Moses's successor. David was tending sheep before God

  471. made him king. Jesus was a carpenter, and Paul was

  472. the tent maker.

  473. You see, God raises up men.

  474. But he takes men through seasons of testing. And Paul

  475. was saying, before a deacon serves, he must be tested.

  476. It must be a period of time where he has

  477. seen that he has served, he's served faithfully, he's been tested,

  478. he's been proven. I remember one time I was serving

  479. in a church one time, and we were trying.

  480. To find leaders in the church.

  481. And there was a particular guy, a man in our

  482. church who had he'd been going to church, but he

  483. only come to Sunday school. He come to Sunday school,

  484. and then after Sady school he'd take off. He never

  485. come to Sunday morning service. And so they were talking

  486. about needing deacons, I think at the time, and we yeah,

  487. we really need some good, good deacons. And they said,

  488. you know such and such, you know he's real faithful,

  489. he's real faithful. Yeah, he comes to Sunday school every Sunday,

  490. but he doesn't come to church. He doesn't come to

  491. Wednesday night, he doesn't come to anything else. Except Sunday School.

  492. You know, but I think I think, Preacher, I tell you,

  493. I think if we make him a deacon, he'll come more.

  494. Well, there's a problem here.

  495. You're you're you're saying, let's put him in a position

  496. and then.

  497. That will make him faithful.

  498. For Paul, No, he must be proven, he must be tested.

  499. He must show.

  500. Himself as an example before you put him into position.

  501. Not put him into position and then see if he'll

  502. fit the example. Do you see That's what Paul was

  503. saying here. He showed to be an example before he serves,

  504. just as Joseph showed himself faithful before he served, just

  505. as Joshua showed himself faithful before God called him, Just

  506. as David was faithful intending the sheep before God called

  507. him to be king.

  508. May we look.

  509. For men who've been tested, who are examples of servants,

  510. who are examples of godly men, before we choose them

  511. to serve one person once said an untested Christian, as

  512. an unprepared Christian, May we find men who are tested.

  513. You see, he's a model of the family. The Bible

  514. says in verse eleven and twelve, Their wives, likewise must

  515. be dignified, not slanderers, but so reminded, faithful in all things.

  516. Let the deacon each be the husband of one wife

  517. and managing their children their households. Well, now here comes

  518. the debated part of the sermon this morning here, when

  519. we come to verse eleven, is really very hotly debated.

  520. I'll give you kind of the two understand understandings of arguments. First,

  521. I think it's important for you understand when you come

  522. to the word in.

  523. Verse eleven wives.

  524. The word in the Greek is simply the same word

  525. for either could be translated women or wives. So I

  526. think that's important to understand very first the pronoun there.

  527. There is not in the Greek that is simply in

  528. the Greek women or wives. So then it comes to

  529. the determination of what is the translation. Is he talking

  530. about the wives of the deacon or he's just talking

  531. about women. And there's two different arguments by this from

  532. this one say this is deacons wives. Paul is as

  533. you come to this passive scripture, he's given qualifications from

  534. verse eight to verse ten is all qualifications of the deacons.

  535. And then he goes into a section where he's discussing

  536. the family of the deacon. So he discusses in verse

  537. eleven the deacon's wife, and then in verse twelve he

  538. talks about him leading his home, and then he talks

  539. about leading his family. So these two verses, Paul is

  540. talking about the life of the family. And so therefore

  541. the translation that Paul is using here when he uses

  542. this term that's used interchangeably for women or for wives,

  543. he's talking.

  544. About the wives of the deacons.

  545. Some would say, you know, what Paul is talking about

  546. here is not wives. The translationation as actually women, and

  547. what Paul is talking about is women deacons or deaconesses.

  548. The argument here is if you go to the passage

  549. scripture their wives likewise. Now you notice if you go

  550. to verse eight, as Paul starts with a new argument

  551. of deacons, he starts deacons likewise, deacons.

  552. Likewise like the elders.

  553. Some say, as he comes to eleven, he's using the

  554. same tool that says women deaconess's likewise follow the example

  555. of the deacons. Therefore also follows some of the same

  556. expectations of the elders, and so some would say he's

  557. talking about women deacons.

  558. There.

  559. We also see in Romans sixteen to one that I

  560. commend you, sister Phoebe a servant of the church. And

  561. so some would say that that Phoebe there is a servant.

  562. This word servant, so we don't know if it's the

  563. office the deacon or not. Someone would say she's an

  564. example of what Paul was talking about. I think that

  565. it's important for you to understand here as you come

  566. to this passage, there's there's this is heavily debated.

  567. I think it's important for you to understand.

  568. Number one, deacons do not have authority over the congregation.

  569. They're not serving as an office of authority. Number two,

  570. they're not teaching. They're just they're servants. And so but

  571. I do think regardless of where there is he he

  572. does tell whether it's women or women deacons.

  573. He does say they are to have examples.

  574. I will say from their early church to the Reformation

  575. products its believed it's been the common belief that this

  576. is their wives, because even the translators here would add

  577. the pronoun there in the belief that this was talking

  578. about their wives as deacons. So the deacon's wives an

  579. important role. It gives this very quickly here it says

  580. it says in verse eleven their wives likewise, must be dignified,

  581. not slanderers, not so reminded, faithful all things. I think

  582. you could probably have this idea that you can imagine

  583. for the deacons. As they're serving the church, their wives

  584. are going to come alongside and serve with their husbands.

  585. They're going to help their husbands in different things. And

  586. so therefore the wives of the deacons are to be an.

  587. Example, as the deacons to be an example.

  588. And so she's to be an example as he's an

  589. example of in verse eleven. She's to be dignified as

  590. he's dignified. She's not to be double tongued like he's

  591. not to be double tungued. She's to be so reminded

  592. as he's supposed to be soberminded. She's to be faithful

  593. as he is to be faithful. I think it's important

  594. for you to see models of the church.

  595. Right. You have a husband, a.

  596. Deacon who's leading faithfully and he's not doing it long.

  597. But he has a wife who is what to be

  598. his helpmate, and she's helping and she's following the same

  599. example of her husband, and they're modeling a godly home

  600. before the church. But you see not only that is

  601. it's not only are they leading together as a couple,

  602. but I also think you see in this passage of scripture,

  603. not only are they leading, but he's leading in his fidelity.

  604. The Bible says, let the deacon each be the husband

  605. and one wife. I spent a good bit of time

  606. on this last time.

  607. Courage you.

  608. If you missed that, maybe go back and watch or listen.

  609. But the idea here, I believe is a one woman man.

  610. It doesn't mean that he can he can never be

  611. divorced or never be married and serving. I think the

  612. idea and the main idea here is that he's to

  613. be a one woman man. It means that he only

  614. has eyes for his wife. He's faithful to her only.

  615. And so that's the idea here.

  616. Fidelity.

  617. He's committed to his wife, He's he's not consumed by lust,

  618. he's not consumed with pornography, he's not consumed with dirty jokes,

  619. he's not concerned with being flirtatious.

  620. He only has eyes for his wife. He's committed solely

  621. to her.

  622. He's to be he is to be a role model

  623. of sexual purity for others, which you see, and only

  624. that is he and only to be an example of purity.

  625. He also has to manage his children well in their household,

  626. So only is he to They are to be committed,

  627. and there'll be examples together, but he's to be committed

  628. to her. He's an example of purity before the church

  629. and before others. The example of leading a household well,

  630. they lead their family well. In John Bunyan's book Pilgrim's Progress,

  631. there's a character talkative, and talkative is described as someone

  632. who's saintely abroad and the devil at home. You know,

  633. if you think about it, there is a danger within

  634. ministers and church leaders, elders and deacons that we can

  635. live one way in the church in another way outside

  636. the church, and in particularly we can do this at home.

  637. Live one way before the people. I live another way

  638. at the home, but a failure in the home shows

  639. there's a really serious trouble.

  640. For the church.

  641. For a deacon, he needs to be one who's faithful

  642. in the church, an example in the church, and he also.

  643. Needs to be an example to his home.

  644. I will say one of the most important things that

  645. I've always said for me is I tell my girls

  646. read your bibles, pray, seek the Lord. But if I'm

  647. not living that myself, I'm failing. I think one of

  648. the greatest things my girls see is my Bible out

  649. in he reading my Bible, praying, seeing their mother read

  650. her Bible and pray. We must be an example here,

  651. but we have to be the same example at home.

  652. It starts there. Paul understands that as we.

  653. Finish this morning, I want you to see, lastly, here

  654. for a Paul, for a deacon, who's this model servant,

  655. who is a model of dignity, a model of discipline,

  656. the model of salvation, a model of maturity, a model

  657. of family.

  658. There's the results of this.

  659. It produces something, and he ends this section with that

  660. verse thirteen. For those who serve well as deacon gain

  661. a good standing for themselves and also confidence in the

  662. faith that is in Christ Jesus. You know, it's kind

  663. of that ideas someone's watching, right, Someone's always watching, watching

  664. how you live.

  665. So what's the good in it? In the end, what

  666. does it produce? Well, one, it gives you a good

  667. reputation before others.

  668. It is, if you will, a reputation of faithfulness. The

  669. word for standing here literally means to elevate a stand.

  670. He's using it metaphorically. That mean that we might put

  671. someone on a pedestal. This is not pride. This is

  672. not something that the deacons seek, but as an honor

  673. that deacons receive. If they're that faithful example that God's

  674. calling them to be, they can hold their head up

  675. high before their peers that they've been faithful. They've been

  676. a faithful servant to the Lord. In the eyes of

  677. their peers, they hold a good reputation, a reputation of faithfulness.

  678. Secondly, they have confidence in the faith.

  679. Listen the way he says for those who serve well

  680. as deacon gain a good standing for themselves and also

  681. great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.

  682. The word confidence.

  683. There is this idea of bold faith, confidence in their

  684. walk with the Lord, their confidence in their relationship with Christ.

  685. They know there where God wants them to be, and

  686. that God is It's pleased with their faithfulness. They have

  687. confidence before the Lord. Can I remind you today, Church,

  688. as I said to you last Sunday. If you leave

  689. this service and say that's a good message for the deacons,

  690. you've missed it. This is a message for all of

  691. us there to be role.

  692. Models, role models that you follow.

  693. So how are you this morning? How are you displaying dignity?

  694. How are you being dis.

  695. Sure?

  696. There's things that you can do, but there's things that

  697. you should not do as a Christian?

  698. How are you displaying discipline?

  699. How do you graft? Do you have a grasp of

  700. the gospel that Jesus came and lived and died on

  701. a cross for your sins? Do you believe that? Do

  702. you have the conviction and do you have a clear

  703. conscience that you know that Jesus has saved you today?

  704. Are you a model of maturity? Maybe today God's testing you.

  705. He's taking you through a season of testing like he

  706. did Joseph, for like David, and maybe he's preparing you

  707. to do something. Are you demonstrating maturity in the midst?

  708. How about home?

  709. Are you the same person at church as you're at home?

  710. Would you just say Lord today, I want to be

  711. faithful publicly and privately to you. I heard his story

  712. as I closed this morning, I asked the priest team,

  713. you can make your way up. Heard the story of

  714. a two men they robbed a jewey store. One was

  715. a lawyer, one was a just a high school dropout

  716. he had been, They were arrested, they were convicted, sentence,

  717. and the lawyer received a tenure prison sentence. It's whereas

  718. the guy who dropped out of school, he only got

  719. three years. The lawyers representative of his counselor stood before

  720. the judge and pleaded with the judge, this is not fair.

  721. I mean he's got the lawyer got ten years and

  722. this other guy just got three. Why is it that

  723. he got such a harsh sentence. The judge explained that

  724. the lawyer had a greater responsibility because he.

  725. Was an example of the law.

  726. Can I tell you, elders, deacons, you and I are

  727. will be held to a high your standard because of

  728. what God's word.

  729. Commanded of us. We're to be an example.

  730. But can I tell you that responsibility and only falls

  731. to the elders and falls to us as deacons, it

  732. follows onto you as believers. Why because you know what

  733. God's word says, and he will hold us responsible to

  734. what his word says and how we measure up to

  735. his word.

  736. May you say to me, say to the Lord.

  737. Today, Lord, help me be an example that others wants

  738. to follow in my own life today?

  739. Would you pray with me. Lord.

  740. I thank you Lord that you give the church leaders

  741. to be an example to the church.

  742. Lord, I pray that we would be men women of God.

  743. Who follow your word, who show a loss and the

  744. dying world what it.

  745. Means to be a Christian, what it means to be godly,

  746. what it means to be holy. Lord, Your word tells

  747. us to be holy, for you are holy. So God,

  748. may we rise up to your word. God.

  749. I thank you Lord for this word that you've given

  750. us today. Lord, help us lords, submit Lord to your teaching.

  751. Submit to your word today. Lord, I pray this as

  752. we come to this time of invitation. If there's need

  753. to come to.

  754. This alter and pray, I pray you lead them to

  755. do that. Lord.

  756. If I could pray for someone, I pray you lead them. Lord,

  757. I pray for someone here today that doesn't know the

  758. truth of the Gospel, doesn't have never put their faith

  759. in you for salvation.

  760. Lord.

  761. I pray today would be the day that they would surrender,

  762. Lord to your word.

  763. Lord, would surrender their life to you and put their

  764. faith in you for salvation. Today.

  765. Lord, we love you, We thank you Lord for this service.

  766. Lead us. Now we pray
