Grit & Grace: Week 3

Wow, you guys did like as if the professor was

walking into the room. But that's not me. Well, Happy

Memorial Day weekend to all of you. So glad to

be here this morning to celebrate the goodness of God

together as a family, and it's just good to be together.

Amen.

Well, let us pray this morning and we're gonna hop

into the word as we continue this series. Lord, we

just thank you. We thank you for this moment. We

thank you for this opportunity to gather as a family

and to think of all that you have been.

Doing in our lives. Lord.

This moment is special because this is an opportunity where

we slow everything down so we can tune into what

you want to say to us. So, Father, I pray

right now that you would speak, help us to hear clearly,

Help our hearts to be open, our minds to be open.

And Lord, when we leave this place, let us be

better than we came. We pray this now in Jesus' name.

Let everybody say amen.

Amen.

Well, listen again, Happy Memorial Day to all of you

as we consider and we celebrate those who have given

their lives for the rights that we have and the

privileges we have in this country, and so we're so

grateful today today. I know many of you know that

downtown Indianapolis is electric. It is buzzing. It is the

greatest spectacle and racing going on this weekend, which is

the ndy five hundred, and hundreds of thousands of people

will be in the stands this weekend watching these cars

go around this two and.

A half mile oval.

And I don't know how many of you have been

to the race before. I have not been yet, but

I know I've seen it on TV and I'm like, wow,

how many times can you go around?

Obviously it's a whole lot of times.

So the reality of this is that you cannot win

the race just on its own. You just can't win

because you want to win. It's not about raw speed,

but it's about strategy. It's about having the right team

working with you. It's about the precision, and it's about

having the people that the pit stops each time that

you stop and pushing through over two hundred laps around

and for that you need a level of grace. For that,

you need a level of grit. Those drivers who are

driving in the ND five hundred, they have learned something

that many of us as Christians have not really hone

in on yet. And that is is that grit alone

will burn you up. Grace without grit will not allow

you to get around the track. You actually need both

of them to make it around the track.

And to actually have a chance at winning.

Today, I want to introduce you to someone who actually

understood both of these components of the life of the

believer really well.

To have grit and to have grace.

And I'm introducing you and some of you I'm reintroducing

you to. His name was Stephen. Stephen was not an apostle,

He was not one of the Twelve. He was a servant.

He was a waiter or a tablewaiter of sorts. He's

someone who turned out to be one of the most fearless,

most faithful, most gracefuled men that we can find. In

the Book of Acts, Acts tells us this. It says,

this proposal please the whole group. They chose Steven, a

man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, full

of faith, full of the Holy Spirit. That is the

description that was given to Stephen. And this Stephen's description

is preserved throughout history. This is the one identifier of

him that he was a man that was full of

faith and full of the Holy Spirit.

Today, I want to share three.

Ideas with you or three thoughts with you that surround

Stephen's life. And I believe we can pull out of

Stephen's life and this will reveal what grace looks like

when it is layered with grace. What does grit look

like when it's layered with grace. And these are the

things that I want to pull to you today that

we can walk out of here with some simple.

Truths and also some action steps.

Those action steps will hopefully be something that we can

add to our lives, not tomorrow, but actually today. Point one,

Grit and grace serve faithful.

Grit and grace serve faithfully. To help us.

Understand what's going on at this time, the church in

Jerusalem is exploding. People are being saved every day, People

are coming into the knowledge of Jesus Christ, and they

are joining the church community, they are joining the group

of believers, and it's just so many things happening that

in the midst of the goodness, the Greek speaking widows

were being ignored or overlooked in the daily.

Rations of food.

And because of this, it was hard for the apostles

to really say, well, what are we going to do

about this, this logistical problem, this problem that was an

issue for everyone.

What are we going to do about this?

And so they said, well, we can't walk away from

teaching and preaching the word, we can't walk away from prayer.

We need a servant.

We need some people who can come alongside of us

and take care of this need. So they asked the

congregation to identify seven men who were full of God's

grace and power and that they would be the ones

who would step up and who would serve in this capacity.

And Stephen was the first one chosen. Acts six' eight says.

This Now, stephen a man full Of god's grace and,

power performed great wonders and signs among the.

People don't miss.

This stephen was chosen to wait tables to make sure

widows got.

Food that was his.

Assignment but in the midst of that, assignment they still

spoke of these great miracles and wonders that he was.

Performing and most people would ask the, question how how

does he perform these? Miracles it's not because he was serving.

Tables could it be because of? That, no it's Because

stephen didn't treat his assignment as if it was something beneath.

Him he treated his assignment as if it was a

thing that he was doing For god or what we

can learn from. That and Because stephen was submitted and

he was faithful in the small, Things god opened doors

for him to be able to do extraordinary.

Things this is the great side of. That one he showed. Up.

Two he. Served he did.

Not demand a title before he made an. Impact he

didn't wait for a pulpit before he started to walk

out and live out his.

Faith he just. Served he served.

Faithfully he served fully with everything that he. Had but

notice the grace side of. This it says that he

was full Of god's. Grace that's not just a description

of how he operated or how he treated, people but

it's a description of what he was operating out. Of

grace had filled him. Up and because when you are

full of, something it seeps, out and so grace seeped

out of the life Of. Stephen simple. Truth you don't

need a title to make an. Impact faithful service is.

Leadership most times we assume that we need a, platform

and the world will tell you you need a. Platform

but The gospel tells us to serve the person who

is in front of.

You faithful leadership is or faithful. Service it is.

Leadership that's what it, is every single, day showing, up

making a, difference being on your, post being on, time

doing the thing that you're called to. Do AND i

don't care if you're the janitor or you're the, preacher

you still have the same. Responsibility. Amen if we served

as if it, mattered it would. Matter and So stevens

served that. Way he served with everything that he. Had

in the race of. Faith the pit crew is just

as important as the. Driver so don't despise the lane

That god has put you. In sometimes we can look

at what we're doing and we think that it's, small

but it's not. Small it's great in the eyes Of

god because everybody has an assignment and your role is.

Important we look at the body and we could probably

pick out one part of the body that we, say,

OH i can get rid of. That And i'm not

talking about, toenails, Right but if you ever not had a,

toell you know that's not. Cool.

Right so you.

May feel like it's, insignificant but it has a role

and it is important to the. Body grit serves, faithfully

and grace serves without keeping score.

Point. Two grit and grace speak.

BOLD i want to let you know that if you

are doing the things That god want you to, do

the things That god has assigned you to, do you

will not go very long without facing some form of.

Opposition opposition would come because As stephen was, serving he

still spoke About jesus in the. Synagogue he would speak

about Who jesus. Was he was speaking about the difference

That jesus made in his. LIFE i want to let

you know that When jesus changes your, life you are

unable to keep silent about. That there's something about When

jesus changes your, life you. KNOW i question sometimes because,

like people don't talk About jesus that much. Anymore sometimes

we gather and we rather talk about the.

Weather how many you talk about the weather?

Today first thing you, said, well he came, in why

it's kind of cloudy out there, today and wonder how

the race is going to? Go? Right people will talk about,

sports we'll talk about, anything but we fail to talk About.

Jesus And stephen was talking About jesus everywhere that he.

Went he was talking About. Jesus it was hard for

him to separate his life From. JESUS i want to

let you, know you cannot separate Who jesus is in.

Your life from everything else you.

Do he slides into every space of your, life into your,

marriage into your, parenting into your, work into every part

of your. Life you cannot Compartmentalize. Jesus you cannot put

him in a. Box he walks through every portion of your.

Life and so he had to face some. Opposition so

what happens when people don't like what you're? Saying what

happens when people cannot stand up to the wisdom Of?

Stephen they do what everyone does when you can't argue

with a. Person you attacked, them and they attacked. Him

they seized, Him they brought him in before The, sanhedron

and they brought in false witnesses against. Them they basically

lied against. Them The bible says it's In act six.

Fifteen all who were sitting in The santhedron looked intently At,

stephen and they saw that his face was like the

face of an. Angel he's standing before the most powerful

religious court In, jerusalem accused of, blasphemy and his face

looks like.

An angel that is grit layered with. Grace that's what

it looks.

Like that even though you're being, accused even though you're

in a very pecurious, place you are still looking Like.

JESUS i want to let you, know it makes a

difference how you look when you go through a hard.

Situation it makes a different diference how you walk out

the hard. Things every believer you will go through hard,

things but how you handle that thing Glorify. Jesus we

have to make a choice about how we're gonna deal

with the job, loss what we're gonna do about the

hardship and the, marriage what we're gonna do about the

hardship and the, Family what we're gonna do when we

lose the, car when we lose the, house when we lose.

Things how do we handle? That do we handle it

the way That jesus? Does or do we fall in

with the rest of the. World steven is looking like

an angel and he's on.

Trial and Then act seven happens or like this, Work

and this.

Is why it's so good because in all of The New,

testament this is probably one of the most PHENOMENAL uh

speeches ever given by one. Person who's on. Trial steven

is asked a simple. Question The sanhedrin asked. This they

ask the. Question the high priests ask the, question are

these charges?

True four?

Words stephen's response is dynamic Because stephen doesn't give a foreword.

Answer. No stephen gives a history.

Lesson he Covers, Abraham, Joseph, moses The, Tabernacle, solomon and

then he lands the plane on their head With. Jesus

wasn't a yes or no? Answer check out what he

Says acts seven fifty. One he says, this you stiff neck.

People your hearts and ears are still. Uncircumcised you are

just like your. Ancestors you always resist The Holy. Spirit

was there ever a prophet of a? Prophet your, answer,

yes did not Persecute they even killed those who predicted

the coming of The Righteous, One and now you have

betrayed and murdered.

HIM, whoa that's, bold that's.

Grit this is not a, polite carefully crafted let's not

offend anyone. Message stephen speaks the, truth full, truth with

clarity and with. Courage but here is WHAT i need

you to. Notice he didn't lose his, Composure he didn't become.

Cruel he didn't demean. Them he was, bold but he

was not. Brutal he didn't treat them or was driven

by his own. Ego it wasn't about. Him it was

about the god he was. Serving it was About, jesus

who had come into relationship with which he had become

a follower Of.

Jesus and he knew his.

Life had been changed because of all that had been

spoken about. Him and he was standing in the moment and, saying,

guys don't miss.

This this is the great side of this.

Point he opened his mouth when it would have been

much safer for him to keep. Quiet The sanhedrin had

the power to end his, life and they did end his.

Life stephen fully knew the, cost.

But he spoke.

Anyway will you speak? Anyway but this is the great

side of. This he didn't speak to. Win he was

in a situation he could not. Win his accusers had

their intentions, already they knew what they planned to. Do

he could not, win but he spoke. Anyway he didn't

speak to. Win he spoke to. Witness there's a big

difference between the. Two when we speak to, win we're

speaking to defeat our, opponent but witnessing means you introduce

them to the one who can actually save their, souls

even if the message is. Rejected, RECENTLY i was on

a plane coming back FROM dc To indianapolis And i'm

in the airport doing a couple of things on the.

Computer it's getting close to my flight And i'm sitting

there And i'm, LIKE i don't want to eat a

meal Because i'm, Like i'm coming. Home i'm probably gonna

eat WHEN i get. Home matter of, FACT i KNEW

i was gonna eat WHEN i get.

Home.

Right things are expensive in the, airport anybody been. There

BUT i was, LIKE i need. SOMETHING i want some.

Gum but THEN i was, LIKE i don't want to

pay like eight dollars for a pack of, gum and

SO i just didn't want.

To but THEN i was like at the, POINT i was, like,

okay let's just go see what they.

Got SO i go in the store and on my

way to the, STORE i see this young man who

has this hat.

ON i noticed his, hat AND i was, LIKE i

like the, hat just like the.

Hat and winter the store AND i found a pack of.

Gum it was two ninety nine cent thout nine pieces of.

Gum fair.

Price SO i buy the gum pop a few in

And i'm chewing the gum AND i get on the,

plane sit in my seat AND i have a window,

seat and some sitting in my window.

Seat and THEN i look up.

And the same young man WHO i saw in the

airport with the hat was standing. There and so he

sits down and he's on the phone and he's talking

to his girlfriend at the, time and he's just having

a good. Conversation this flight attendant walks by and, says,

hey get off the. Phone he keeps on talking And i'm, like, okay, well,

hey this is he's doing his own thing over. Here

and So I'm i'm seated there And i'm filling inside

LIKE i need to talk to him About. Jesus you

ever get that where you feel like you need to

talk to somebody About. Jesus But i'm, LIKE i don't,

KNOW i really don't. Know SO i said, this and you,

Know i'm not proud of, this because, LISTEN i have

been on mission, TRIPS i have been on evangelistic. Trips

i've been In pittsburgh And philadelphia.

Downtown witnessing the. PEOPLE i know how to do this.

THING i have the practice but in this, Moment i'm

sitting there AND i say To, god this is my.

Prayer. Lord IF i need to talk to him about,

you he's gonna have to talk to me. First that's

the pastor talking to y'all.

Too so we get we take, off and once we take,

Off i'm sitting there and him on my phone, scrolling

not really, scrolling you know, why because there was no,

WiFi So i'm.

Just playing around on my. Phone i'm looking at my old,

pictures eating.

PICTURES i got seven copies of, it just doing nothing

right and on the. Phone and then all of a,

sudden after we've taken, OFF i get this tap on

my arm and he, says you got another piece of?

Gum because of two dollars and ninety nine, CENT i

got to spend an hour and a half talking to

this young man About. Jesus when he tapped my, ARM

i immediately took out my. EARBUGS i was, like this

is going. Down i'm about to talk About we don't

talk About jesus today because people just don't ask people for, gum,

RIGHT i KNOW i don't even IF i SOMETIMES i

really need. It right, anyway we cannot be afraid to

open our mouths about the one who saved, us the

one who redeemed, us the one who keeps. Us somebody

needs to know simple truth. Too the truth is worth

telling even when the audience isn't ready to hear. IT

i didn't know if he was ready or. Not but

let me tell you. Something i've been in communication with

this young.

Man his name Is.

DEVIN i don't know if he's watching, today maybe he

is watching a link, today but his name Is. Devin

he's about to be a. FATHER i learned all about his,

history his, past that he kind of grew up in the.

Church all these THINGS i learned about him in an

hour and a half on a. FLIGHT i want to

let you know there are people in this world who

are waiting for you to talk About. Jesus they need

to hear the good news Of. Jesus they're waiting for

somebody to say. Something why not. You one of the

reasons that The church has lost its voice in the

culture is that we've learned to be quiet when things get.

Uncomfortable we have softened the gospel so much that it

doesn't even sound like What jesus. Preached stephen shows us

that real grace doesn't silence.

Truth it delivers truth with.

Love at THE nd five, hundred those drivers have to

communicate with their.

Crew they're in constant.

Communication they are trying to find out what's going on

in front of, them what's happening in the, race if

they're gonna have enough energy to get around that. Try

there's constant communication back and, forward and guess, what.

That's why we.

Speak we must speak so that others can hear this good,

news so they can get.

Around the track.

Too we're running away race and it's not all about.

You it's not all about you into. Heaven who are.

You taking with?

You who's gonna know that there is a better. Way

who's gonna know That jesus is that. Way so we've

got to share the good, news not to, condemn but

because people desperately need to Know. Jesus point Three grit and,

grace suffer. Graciously this is probably my favorite point today

And i'm gonna try to take it home AND i

got some action steps and challenges for you in a,

Minute but this is probably my favorite point because we

have to be a gracious.

People we got to have, grit but we've got to have.

Grace it's not about banging down on, something but it's

how do we get the message and the word out

in such a way that it meets people exactly where they.

Are SO i want to be honest with you today about. This,

listen there is a cost to Following. Jesus there's a

price that you are going to have to pay to Follow.

Jesus it's going to cost you, something but guess what

it cost.

Him.

Everything the price that we pay is so small compared

to what it Costs. Jesus and you will have to

pay the. PRICE i will have to pay the, price

AND i know that that can be. Uncomfortable so often

we don't talk about this in The American church because

we don't like it when it's. Uncomfortable but guess. What

we cannot Follow jesus on our own.

Terms we can't.

Do it when it's, convenient we can't do it when

it's culturally. Acceptable but you will have to pay a.

Cost are you willing to pay the? Price, Well stephen

Did acts fifty four fifty five says when the members

of The sanhedrin heard, this they were furious and nast

their teeth at.

Him But, stephen full.

Of the holy spirit looked up to heaven and saw

the glory Of god And jesus standing at the right

hand Of.

God hold. UP i love this.

Verse they were, angry they were, upset But stephen's response

was to look. Up stephen did not look, Out he

did not look, Over he did not look.

Around he looked. UP i want to.

Let somebody in this room know today that when you

are going through a hard, situation look, Up look up

to the hills from which cometh your.

Help all of your help comes from The.

Lord when things get, chaotic when you don't know which

way to, turn look. Up stephen looked. Up he wasn't

looking for an, out he wasn't looking for. Help he

looked For. Jesus he looked to the, hills and when he,

looked he Saw jesus doing something that is so different

than we see in all. Scripture in, scripture we often

hear That jesus is seated at the right hand of The.

Father he's seated at the right hand of The.

Father but in this, passage The bible says That jesus stood.

Up oh My, GOD i like that this.

MORNING i wanna let you know when things get real,

hard when it gets real hot and when you are

standing in the right place in, him he will stand

up for.

You he's the Same.

God that stood up in the Fi re furnace when shadracked.

Me shack and A bennego were walking. Around the man,

said there's a fourth one in the, fire and he

looks like the son Of. GOD i wanna let you.

Know his name Is. Jesus jesus will stand up for.

You oh bless his name this. Morning, listen you are not.

Alone you are the children Of. God you are his

beloved and he will not leave you by. YOURSELF i

love how this all plays. Out watch, This watch, this

this promise That god gives us.

That he will be, there that he got up off.

His, feet off of his, seat on his feet to

see what was happening on the dusty rolls Of.

Jerusalem he does the same thing for.

You have you ever been in that place when you

needed somebody to show?

Up jesus will show. Up check this.

Out this is where grace becomes. Undeniable acts, seven verse

fifty nine says. This he, says while they were stoning,

Him stephen, prayed.

What while they were stoning?

Him while they were lying on, You stephen prayed when

they were talking about you behind your.

Back stephen prayed when they were scheming on.

You stephen, prayed if we can adopt the mentality Of,

stephen if we're able to hone in on what he's.

Saying right here in this, passage he, Prayed, Lord jesus

received my. Spirit then he fell on his knees and cried, out, This,

lord do not hold this sin against. Them when he

had said, this he fell. ASLEEP i like this right.

Here notice, this The bible does not Say stephen. Died

stephen fell. ASLEEP i believe he was so focused On

jesus that as the stones were hitting his very physical,

body he had already started.

To be lull to. Sleep he fell. Asleep but before.

He went to, sleep he, prayed and he, Said, lord

don't hold this against. Them he echoes the same prayer

That jesus prayed from the cross when he, Said, father forgive,

them for they know not what they are.

Doing this prayer.

For forgiveness for his enemies in the midst of his.

Murder this is not. Natural this is super.

Natural this is what happens when grit and grace are

both operating in full capacity in the life of the.

Believer this is when The Holy spirit.

Is fully engaged in the life of the, believer that

you can be, attacked but yet you're praying for forgiveness

for the. Attacker at the end five hundred their, accidents cars,

crash drivers get. Hurt the caution flag, flies but the

race does not. Stop the flag doesn't wait for the

one who crosses the finish line, first but the flag

wigs for the one who endures to the.

End stephen endured to the. End this wasn't the.

Way that the world would have imagined, it but this

was the way that it needed to be That god

would get the. Glory simple truth number, Three grace under

pressure is the clearest picture Of jesus the world will ever.

SEE i want you to know, today the world is

not moved by our theology. Alone they are moved by

what we do when everything falls. Apart they're moved by

what we do when the world gets crazy in the

life of the, believer the one who is standing On,

jesus and they ask the, question how do you do?

That how do you forgive like? That how do you

walk through cancer like? That how do you walk through

a divorce like? That how do you walk through the

lass like. That how do you walk through grief like?

THAT i want to let you KNOW i walk through

it like that BECAUSE i have, grit AND i got,

grace AND i got The Holy spirit living on the

inside of me that allows me to stand firm when

it gets.

Crazy this is the same.

Grace that is available to each and every one of us. Today,

TODAY i want to offer you three action. Steps these

are not. SUGGESTIONS i just want to say that these

are not. Suggestions most TIMES i SAY i got a couple, suggestions, Right,

no that's not. Suggestions i'm telling you do. This this will, work,

aymen this will. Work these are just practical and some

assignments are attached to. Them Number, One serve where you're,

planted Wherever god has planned to.

You serve with everything you.

Have stop waiting for a bigger, Stage stop waiting for

a bigger. Opportunity stop waiting for somebody to die so

you can get their.

Job do what you have been called to. Do just

do the. Work do.

It do it with all your, heart with all your,

might with everything that you.

Have because this race that we are running is one

lap at a.

Time stephen didn't become great at his, death he had

already been operating at a level of greatness because he

was a.

Servant, remember he wasn't an, apostle he wasn't one of the.

Twelve he was just a. Servant but he did it

with all of his.

Heart the challenge this week identify one place where you

have been serving half heartedly and commit to go all

the way. In if it's in your, parenting go all.

In if it's in your, marriage go all. In if

it's on your, job go all. In if you're a,

student go all. IN i know it's, summertime but you're

about to get those grades and you know you need

to go all.

In.

Amen, Actually step, two open your mouth for the. Gospel

somebody in your life needs to hear the good news Of.

Jesus someone you, know a, coworker a, friend a, neighbor

a person next to you this, weekend maybe if you're

going to the. Race somebody needs to know about the

goodness of The. Lord And i'm not asking you to

be a, pastor to be a. Theologian all you need

to have is a, testimony and you've got, that and

you've Got.

Jesus that's all you. Need your story and Your. Savior that's.

Enough before Next, sunday have one intentional spiritual. Conversation don't

talk about the, weather spiritual conversation with someone who doesn't Know.

Jesus that's your. Assignment action step number. Three choose grace

as your default. Response not, anger not, yelling not, cussing

because we got some cussin. Saints choose. Grace make that

your default response when someone wrongs you this, week and

they will trust. Me choose grace before you choose. Retaliation

choose prayer before you choose. Revenge this is not weakness

on your. Part this is the hardest thing for a

human to, do is to choose, grace to believe the.

Best and guess what If stephen can do it while

he has stones thrown at.

Him you can do it on four sixty. Five you

can do it in the.

Boardroom you can do it when there's family, conflict you

can do.

It choose.

Grace this is a challenge this. Week think of one.

Person matter of, fact this is not challenge for this.

Week this is for right. Now think of one person

in your life that you need to forgive right, now

before you even leave this building, today you need to

offer that forgiveness. TODAY i want you, today as we

come to a time of closing a, SERVICE i want

you to pray AND i want.

You to release.

Them release, Them Say, LORD i forgive them for what they,

did for what they. Said, lord forgive me for WHAT i,

did for WHAT i.

Said release.

Them let me let you know, This this forgiveness is

not for, Them it's for. You it's hard For god

to do anything new when your hands are holding on

to the things from the.

Past let them.

Go release, them BECAUSE i come to the. Conclusion stephen

was categorized as a table waiter who became a. Martyr

he was a servant who became a. Witness he was

a man full of faith and The Holy, spirit and

because of, them his story is still being told two

thousand years.

Later his name is written in The.

Bible his death shook a man Named saul so much

that this might have been the first seed planet in

his life that made him become one of the greatest

missionaries The church has ever.

Known you may not know the.

Full impact of your, faithfulness But god does. Know AND

i know today some of you are paying the. Price

you're paying the price with your. Reputation you're paying the

price because of the opportunities that you refuse because it

did not align with your. Faith you're paying the price

in your marriage and your. Community you're paying your price

with some friends that you. Have BUT i want to

say to you, today don't shrink. Back don't trade grit for,

comfort don't trade grace for. Bitterness be full of, faith

be full of The Holy, Spirit serve, faithfully speak, boldly

and suffer. Graciously and when someone looks at your life

and this race that we are all, running let them See.

Jesus stand on your feet with me.

Today the altars will be open in a. Minute and

if you need to go and release, SOMETHING i want

you to do, that if that thing is sitting in

front of you and it's stopping you from moving, Forward

BUT i would speak this word over, you And hebrews

twelve will start that series. Soon twelve one, Says, therefore

since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of,

witnesses let us throw off everything that hinders and the

sin that so easily, entangles and let us run with

perseverance thet out for, us fixing our eyes On, jesus

the pioneer and the perfector of our.

Faith stephen is a part of that cloud of. Witnesses

he's cheering you.

On jesus is standing at the right hand of The

father just for.

You so now run your race with, grit with, grace

and do it for his.

Glory stephen had his last, day and some would say

that might have been his greatest, day.

But it was just one.
