  1. How do you pray for healing and restoration? I'm talking

  2. about physical healing, but I'm talking about more than that too.

  3. Healings of minds, healings of relationships, healings of finances, and

  4. so many different areas where there needs to be a restoration,

  5. there needs to be a healing. What I wanna do

  6. is I wanna quickly explain how to pray for healing,

  7. something you need to know. And then we're gonna pray

  8. for each other. About 3,000 years ago, God made a

  9. promise to King Solomon. And that promise still stands today

  10. because it's a promise made to all his people. If

  11. you'll look at your message notes, at the top of

  12. the outline, 2 Chronicles 7, verse 14, one of the

    2 Chronicles 7:14

  13. very most important and most Well-known promises in the entire Bible,

  14. 2 Chronicles 7, 14. If my people who are called

  15. by my name will humble themselves and pray, seek my face,

  16. turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven.

  17. I will forgive their sins and I will heal their land.

  18. I want you to circle that word heal I will

  19. hear from heaven, I will forgive their sins, I will

  20. heal their land. Now, I wanna point out a couple

  21. things before we actually tear this verse apart today in

  22. our study together. The first thing I wanna point out

  23. is that this is not a promise for everybody. God

  24. didn't make this promise to everybody. But he says this,

  25. if my people, If my people, this is a promise

  26. for the people of God. Who are the people of God? Well,

  27. look up here on the screen. One day, somebody asked

  28. Jesus that. And the Bible says in Matthew 12, when

  29. Jesus was teaching the crowd, his mother and his brothers

  30. waited nearby to speak to him. By the way, some

  31. people don't realize Jesus had brothers and sisters. He was

  32. just the oldest. Now, they were all half brothers and

  33. sisters because Joseph was the dad, but And you know,

  34. God was the dad of Jesus. But it's very clear,

  35. we even have the names of Jesus' brothers and sisters.

  36. So Mary had children. It's real clear, they're in the Bible.

  37. In fact, one of Jesus' half-brothers named James became the

  38. leader of the church in Jerusalem and wrote a book

  39. in the Bible and it's called James. Hmm, his half-brother.

  40. So Mary certainly had kids. It's in scripture. Now let's

  41. go back to that. While Jesus was teaching the crowd,

  42. his mother and brothers waited nearby to speak to him.

  43. So they're standing at the edge of the crowd. Somebody

  44. told Jesus, your family wants to talk to you. Jesus asked,

  45. who's my family? He always turns everything into a teaching incident.

  46. Then pointing to his followers, he said, these people are

  47. my family. Anybody who obeys my father in heaven and

  48. does his will, does the father's will, is my brother.

  49. and my sister, and my mother. So, question. Have you

  50. done what the father said? And the father said was

  51. to receive his son. If you accepted Christ into your life,

  52. if you have followed him, if you've become his follower,

  53. his disciple, guess what? You're in the family. You're in

  54. the family. So this verse is a promise for you.

  55. If my people, you're his people. If you know the Lord,

  56. you're his people. It's not a promise for everybody, but

  57. it is for God's people. Now, the second thing I

  58. want you to notice, he says, if my people who

  59. were called by my name. I wonder if you're ever

  60. embarrassed to identify yourself as a disciple. I wonder if

  61. you're ever embarrassed to say, I'm a Christian. I'm a

  62. follower of Jesus. I'm a disciple of Christ. If my

  63. people who were called by my name You know, everybody

  64. else is bold about their beliefs today. But a lot

  65. of Christians, they don't say a word at the office.

  66. Nobody knows. Years ago, there was a, everybody remember Lady Clairol?

  67. I don't even know if they still have that anymore.

  68. But it was like one of the original, you know,

  69. dyes for your hair. And it was the Lady Clairol.

  70. Only her hairdresser knows for sure. Do you remember that?

  71. If you do, you're incredibly old, go home. Okay. There

  72. are no Lady Clairol Christians, only God knows for sure.

  73. There are no secret agent Christians. The Bible says, let

  74. everyone who nameth the name of the Lord depart from iniquity,

  75. and the Bible says, if you're a believer, then you

  76. need to be called by his name. You need to

  77. stand up, you need to say, I'm a Christian, I'm

  78. a believer, I'm a follower of Christ. And he says,

  79. if my people who are called by my name, look

  80. back up here on the screen, the Bible says this

  81. in Mark, if anyone, Jesus is talking, if anybody's ashamed

  82. of me and my words and this unfaithful and immoral generation,

  83. I'll be ashamed of him when I return in glory

  84. with all my angels. I don't want that for you.

  85. I don't want that for anybody in our church. that

  86. you were ashamed of Christ to be called by his

  87. name in this day and age? And Jesus said, well,

  88. I'll be ashamed of you if you're ashamed of me. Now,

  89. the third thing I want you to note as we're

  90. just getting started, it says, if my people who are

  91. called by my name, and then he gives four conditions.

  92. And he says, if you humble yourself and you pray

  93. and you seek my face and you turn from me

  94. in wicked ways, then I'll hear from heaven, then I'll

  95. forgive your sins, And then I'll heal you. I'll heal

  96. your land. The point here is that with every promise,

  97. there's a premise. There are conditions. And there are conditions here.

  98. He says, I'll do this. But here are the conditions.

  99. Here are the premises before the promise. And there are

  100. four conditions of healing and restoration. Now, I don't know

  101. what you need restored in your life. Maybe you need

  102. your marriage restored. Maybe you need your dream restored. Maybe

  103. you need your body restored. Maybe you need your health

  104. restored or your finances restored. I don't know what needs

  105. healing in your life, but the principles in this passage

  106. apply to every area of healing and restoration. So if

  107. you'll do what he says to do here and you

  108. fully understand it, you can expect. God says, if you

  109. do this, I will do that. So let's get right

  110. into it, okay? Number one, Here's the first condition for

  111. healing and restoration in any area of your life. Number one,

  112. I admit I'm not in control. I admit that I'm

  113. not in control. And what is that called? That's called humility.

  114. It's saying God is God and I'm not. God is

  115. God and I am not. The first condition for healing,

  116. for restoration in your life, if my people will humble themselves,

  117. humility is the first step to healing. What's he saying here? So,

  118. you know, I don't approach God arrogantly. I don't come

  119. to God proudly or I don't come to God flippantly.

  120. I don't come to God disrespectfully. Hey man, how's it going?

  121. Man upstairs, big daddy. I don't make demands in prayer. God,

  122. you have to do this. God is not your genie.

  123. God is not my genie. We've talked about this many times.

  124. I don't come arguing, demanding, being arrogant. It says I

  125. come humbly. If my people who are called by my

  126. name will humble themselves. By the way, Did you know

  127. that in the scripture, never are you ever commanded to

  128. pray for humility? So you don't ever need to pray

  129. for it. The Bible doesn't ever tell you, God, please

  130. humble me. Really, you don't wanna ask him to do that.

  131. It's humiliating. You are never to pray, God, humble me, why?

  132. Because humility is a choice. Humility is something you do

  133. to yourself. God doesn't do it to you, you do

  134. it to yourself. Humility is a choice. And so instead

  135. of saying pray for humility, it just says humble yourself.

  136. It's something you do. And over and over in scripture

  137. it says, instead of pray for humility, it says humble yourself,

  138. humble yourself, humble yourself, humble yourself. It says it over

  139. and over and over in the Old Testament and in

  140. the New Testament. Humility is a choice. You say okay,

  141. well if that's the first condition, for something to be

  142. restored in my life, or something to be healed in

  143. my life, I wanna know three things. What is humility?

  144. What does it look like? How do I develop it?

  145. How do I show God my humility? How do I

  146. do that? Well, I'm glad you asked, because I made

  147. a list. Here's 12 ways to show humility, real humility,

  148. every single day. Number one. Confess your sin to God

  149. the moment you realize it. So you're sitting there and

  150. you say something wrong, you're angry, prideful, jealous, or whatever,

  151. you go, wrong I'm sorry that's humble that's humility when

  152. you keep short accounts with God you don't wait until

  153. the end of the week to have a pile of

  154. garbage you have to say Lord I got to take

  155. out the garbage now no you take it out the

  156. moment you do it God that wasn't right I'm sorry

  157. And you just say it to God. You confess your

  158. sin the moment you realize it. Number two, humility is

  159. forgiving quickly. If you don't know how to forgive quickly,

  160. that's prideful. If you carry grudges, that's prideful. Humility is

  161. forgiving quickly. You never hold onto a grudge. Humble people

  162. are forgiving quickly. Number three, when you're treated unfairly, be

  163. quiet and patient and don't retaliate. That's real humility. You

  164. are most like Christ. I am most like Christ when

  165. I refuse to defend myself against false accusation. When people

  166. attack you, when people say mean things about you, when

  167. people say stuff that's untrue about you, and you don't

  168. say a word, the Bible says that Jesus did this.

  169. He was perfect, and yet he was maligned. He was misled.

  170. He was accused of all kinds of stuff. They put

  171. him on a cross for stuff that wasn't true. And

  172. the Bible says when they stood before him, the governor, Pilate,

  173. and others, it says, he spake not a word unto them.

  174. I am most like Christ when I absorb the attacks.

  175. You're most like Christ when you absorb the attacks. That's humility.

  176. Number four, when you look for ways to serve others

  177. instead of expecting to be served, that's humility. When you

  178. accept criticism and correction graciously, That shows God your humility.

  179. When you don't fight to get the best seat or

  180. the best table or the best parking spot, that's humility.

  181. Intentionally being friends, befriending people who have no status or

  182. who can't help you or who are overlooked by society,

  183. that's humility. Where you intentionally build relationships and build friendships

  184. with people who don't, can't, won't serve you. Maybe they're

  185. the unpopular person in the office or at school. But

  186. you do that. That is a mark of humility. Humility

  187. is being respectful to the authorities in your life, even

  188. the bad ones. This stuff's not easy, is it? I'm

  189. not giving you an easy list. Humility is when you

  190. pick up the trash wherever you find it. Humility is

  191. when you leave a public restroom cleaner than when you

  192. found it. The little things, the stuff that nobody else

  193. will see, God sees that. That's humility. When you admit

  194. your weaknesses and your sins to a few safe people,

  195. you don't have to tell everybody, but revealing your feelings

  196. is the beginning of healing, we've talked about that many times.

  197. When you're able to say, you know, I'm not good

  198. at this, I'm weak at this, and this is my sin,

  199. Here's where I'm struggling. This is my temptation. If there

  200. was more confession of temptation in small groups, there'd be

  201. less need for confession of sin. It would get stopped sooner.

  202. That's humility. When you can admit what you're struggling with

  203. in a small group or with a close friend. When

  204. you always speak well of others, you never use put downs.

  205. You never use put downs. You never stoop to the

  206. level of people who put you down That's humility. When,

  207. number 12, you pray for your enemies. Are you kidding me?

  208. Jesus said it. Those people you really don't like, the

  209. people you vote against, the people who you walk the

  210. other way when you see them, pray for your enemies,

  211. bless those who hate you. That's 12 marks of real humility.

  212. Now why would anybody live like that? It's hard. It's hard.

  213. Humility is not thinking less of yourself. It's thinking of

  214. yourself less. Humility is you're so busy focused on God

  215. and helping other people, he doesn't think about yourself. If

  216. I go into a party and I walk in and

  217. I start thinking, how do I look to everybody? Who

  218. am I focused on? Me. That's pride. When I walk

  219. into a party and I go in here and I go,

  220. who needs encouragement? Who could probably use a word of

  221. encouragement today? That's humility. Humility is not thinking less of yourself.

  222. I'm bad, I'm no good, I'm nothing, I'm zero, I'm zip. No,

  223. that's false humility. Humility is you're so busy focused on

  224. God and other people, you don't just even think about yourself.

  225. You're natural, you're normal, because you're focused on everybody else.

  226. Now that's a hard way to live. Why would anybody

  227. do it? Because of what God does when you do that.

  228. And God says if you humble yourself, there are many, many, many,

  229. many promises in scripture. God, I just say it this way.

  230. Humility is a big deal to God. It's a lot

  231. bigger deal than you realize. Humility is not false. I'm nothing,

  232. I'm zero. You can be confident and humble at the

  233. same time. You're just not focused on you. But God

  234. loves humble people. Let me give you five things God'll

  235. do in your life if you'll work on this. Write

  236. these down. If I'm humble, God will guide me. If

  237. I'm humble, God will guide me. You ever going, I

  238. don't know what to do. I don't know what step

  239. I should take. I don't know whether I should get

  240. in or get out. I don't wanna sit, hold on

  241. or let go. When you don't know which way to

  242. turn and you're confused, get humble. If I'm humble, God

  243. will guide me. Psalm 25, nine. God leads the humble

  244. in the right way and he teaches them his will.

  245. You wanna know God's will? God's will is not given

  246. to prideful people, arrogant people, self-sufficient people. The humbler you are,

  247. the more God will guide you, the fewer mistakes you'll

  248. make in life. That's a benefit. Let me give you

  249. a second benefit. If I'm humble, God will not only

  250. guide me, he'll bless me. He's promised this all through scripture.

  251. I just gave you one verse right there, Isaiah 66

  252. verse two. I will bless those who have humble and

  253. contrite hearts. God doesn't bless ego trippers. God doesn't bless

  254. prideful people. God doesn't bless people who are, you know,

  255. secretly think they're better than everybody else. No, he says,

  256. I'll bless those who have humble and contrite hearts. Number three,

  257. if I'm humble, God'll give me the power to change.

  258. If I'm humble, God will give me the power to change.

  259. You know what the power to change is? It's one word,

  260. it's called grace. Grace is the power to change. You

  261. need grace to make changes in your life. And there's

  262. stuff in your life you'd like to change, but you can't,

  263. you've tried, you won't. The only way you're gonna get

  264. it changed is with the grace of God. How do

  265. you get the grace of God in your life, the

  266. power you need for change? Well, he says, James 4, 6,

  267. God opposes the proud, but God gives grace to the humble.

  268. The more humble you are, the more grace God gives you.

  269. The more proudful you are, the more on the opposite

  270. side you are, and you're gonna lose that battle because

  271. your arms are too short to box with God. God

  272. opposes the proud. Every time I'm prideful, I'm on the

  273. opposite side of God. I don't wanna be there. You

  274. don't wanna be there. But every time I'm humble, God

  275. gives me the grace that I need. And what's that?

  276. It's the power to change. He says, I'll guide you,

  277. I'll bless you, I'll give you grace. Number four, if

  278. I'm humble, God says, I will relieve your stress. When

  279. I am humble, my stress goes down. When I'm prideful,

  280. my stress goes up. It's true. Jesus says in Matthew 11, 29,

  281. Take the yoke that I give you and learn from me,

  282. for I'm gentle and I'm humble. See, Jesus is humble.

  283. And he says, and I will restore the deep rest

  284. for your soul. The deep rest for your soul. Wouldn't

  285. you like that, the deep rest for your soul? How

  286. do you get deep rest for your soul when you

  287. think I'm all dried up, I got nothing to give,

  288. I've got nothing left in me, the faucet, I'm tapped out,

  289. it's gone. I'm at the end of my rope. I'm

  290. ready to throw in the towel. All those expressions. How

  291. do you get the deep rest you need? Humility. Look

  292. at that. Take my yoke, learn from me, because I'm humble.

  293. And he says, if you learn from me, he said,

  294. then it will restore deep rest in your soul. So

  295. humility begins with admitting I'm not in control. God, you're God,

  296. and I'm not. The second key is ask God for help.

  297. If you need something in your life restored, If you

  298. need something in your life healed, first, admit I'm not

  299. in control, humble myself, I can't do it on my own,

  300. and second, I ask God for help. How do you

  301. do that? If my people will pray, if my people

  302. will pray, will pray. I ask God for help. And

  303. when I ask God for help, I realize I'm not

  304. waiting on God. He's been waiting on me. You know,

  305. whatever you've wanted restored in your life, have you been

  306. praying about it? Have you been asking God for that

  307. kind of of help, he says, I'll give it to you.

  308. And he says, I'll give you the kind of help

  309. that you need. Now, the truth is, for many people, healing,

  310. asking God for healing, God, I need healing in my body.

  311. I need healing in my mind. I need healing in

  312. my marriage. Healing is a scary thing to a lot

  313. of people. So how do you do it? How do

  314. you pray for healing? Let me just give you a

  315. couple tips. Write these down. Let me give you four

  316. or five tips right here on how do I say, Lord,

  317. I need you. How do I say that? Well, you're

  318. first gonna need some confidence to do this. So let's

  319. look at this verse. John chapter 16, Jesus says this

    John 16 chapter mention

  320. in verse 23 and 24. Jesus said, I tell you

  321. the truth. My Father will give you anything you ask.

  322. My Father will give you anything you ask for in

  323. my name. Now until now, Jesus says, You haven't asked

  324. for anything in my name. Ask. I want you to ask.

  325. You know, over 20 times in the New Testament, you

  326. are commanded by God to ask in prayer. He says

  327. it over, ask and you'll be given. Seek and you'll find.

  328. Ask anything, ask everything. Ask and you'll receive so that

  329. your joy will be the fullest joy possible. Now that

  330. verse gives us the first two tips in how to

  331. pray for healing. I hope you're writing this down. Okay,

  332. here's the first thing you do when you want to

  333. pray for healing. First thing is, remember, Jesus wants me

  334. to ask. That'll give you confidence. Whatever you've got going

  335. on in your life, you know, well, I don't know

  336. if I should pray for this. Jesus says, ask. And look,

  337. he says there, he says, ask anything. Ask anything in

  338. my name. He says, remember that I want you to ask.

  339. It's his idea. Have you ever thought about this? We've

  340. been talking about prayer for over a month now. Why

  341. does God want you to ask for stuff in prayer?

  342. Why does he do that? The reason God wants you

  343. to ask for stuff in prayer is that's the only

  344. way you're gonna learn how to trust him. It's like

  345. with a parent and a child. How does a child

  346. learn to trust a parent? The child has a need.

  347. Then the child expresses the need, usually through crying. The

  348. parent hears the need. The parent meets the need. The

  349. child trusts the parent. And that's done thousands and thousands

  350. of time growing up. That's how a child learns to

  351. trust a parent. I have a need. I admit a need.

  352. I express the need. The parent hears the need. The

  353. parent meets the need. Trust. Repeat again. The same is

  354. true with your heavenly father. If you're not asking God

  355. for anything, you're not learning how to trust him. If

  356. you're not asking God for anything, if you're not saying, Lord,

  357. I need you, I need this, you're not asking him,

  358. you're not trusting him. So in this verse, he says first,

  359. Jesus wants me to ask, and the second thing, here's

  360. the second tip, ask in Jesus' name. He says, ask

  361. in my name. In other words, on the basis of

  362. what Jesus paid for on the cross. Jesus paid for

  363. everything you need on the cross. It's like if you

  364. were to walk into a fancy restaurant and you'd had

  365. no way of getting in there and you didn't know

  366. anybody but you knew the owner and the owner said,

  367. just flash my name when you walk in. You say,

  368. I come in the name of Bob. Oh, come right in.

  369. I come in the name of Bob. There's some places

  370. you could use my name, it'll get you in. There's

  371. some places you use my name, you get kicked out.

  372. But when you come in the name of Jesus to

  373. the Father, You got instant access. So I realize Jesus

  374. wants me to ask and I realize, so I don't

  375. need to be reticent or hesitant to pray for healing

  376. of my body or anything else. He says, I want

  377. you to ask. Ask anything in my name. And I

  378. know what somebody's saying. You got an objection. Excuse me, Rick.

  379. I don't get everything I pray for. What's wrong with

  380. this verse? All right, let's just take it one step

  381. at a time. First, you say I don't get everything

  382. I pray for. What's up? Okay, look closely at that

  383. verse right now. Do you see the word everything in

  384. that verse? No, you see the word anything. What that

  385. verse says is you can ask for anything. It doesn't

  386. say I'll give you everything. Big difference between anything and everything.

  387. Does that make sense? Jesus says, I don't want you

  388. worrying about is this okay to pray for or not?

  389. He says you can pray for anything, I'll figure out

  390. whether it's legit or not. So if you trust God,

  391. you say God, you told me to pray for anything, okay,

  392. I'm gonna pray for this. God'll figure out whether that's

  393. best for you at this time, it's part of his

  394. plan for this time. He doesn't say I'll give you everything.

  395. He says you can ask anything. I'll figure out which

  396. of these are legit, which of these should be done

  397. right now or not. So go ahead and ask. He

  398. says he'll sort it out in his plan. And the

  399. next verse there on your outline gives us two more tips.

  400. In James five he says, is anyone of you in trouble?

  401. He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs

  402. of praise. We were doing that earlier. Is anyone of

  403. you sick? He should call the elders of the church

  404. to pray over him and anoint him with oil in

  405. the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in

  406. faith will make the sick person well. And the Lord

  407. will raise him up. And if he sinned, he'll be forgiven.

  408. All right, now, here's a third tip about how to

  409. pray for healing based on that verse. Write this down.

  410. I'm sorry, I didn't give you a lot of room

  411. this week. Third tip. in praying for healing, get other

  412. people to pray with you. That's important. Now it doesn't

  413. have to be elders, here it's using elders, but anybody

  414. in our church could pray for you, any believer could

  415. pray for you, for your healing. And by the way,

  416. we covered this when we covered he anoints my head

  417. with oil, but there's no healing power in oil, but

  418. it is a beautiful symbol of the Holy Spirit, so

  419. it's fine. If you want to anoint someone with oil,

  420. anoint them with oil. It's a symbol of God's presence

  421. and spirit. There's nothing magical about it. Well, you say,

  422. do I have to have some, do I have to

  423. have a pastor? No. Do I have to have like

  424. 10 people? No, you could do it with one. Look

  425. at this verse up here on the screen. Jesus said,

  426. I tell you, if just two of you on earth

  427. agree together about anything, there's that word again, Anything you

  428. ask for, it doesn't say everything. It says anything you

  429. wanna ask for, agree on it. It will be done

  430. for you by my Father in heaven. He says, oh,

  431. you only need two. You don't have to have like

  432. 50 people praying for you. Fine, get 50 people praying

  433. for you. He says you could have two people, just

  434. one other person. Now, in that verse that we just

  435. read in James where he says, and the prayer of

  436. faith will make the sick person well, that's the fourth tip.

  437. believe and expect an answer. If you wanna pray for

  438. healing for somebody, this is how you do it. Remember

  439. Jesus wants me to ask, ask in Jesus' name, get

  440. other people to pray with you, and believe and expect

  441. an answer. He says the prayer of faith, offered in faith,

  442. will make the sick person well. And then there's one

  443. other tip, and it's in this next verse, Ephesians 5.16

  444. or 5.18. It says there, pray in the spirit at

  445. all times with all kinds of prayer, asking for all

  446. that you need. To do this, you must always be ready,

  447. never give up, always pray for all God's people. Are

  448. you seeing all the alls in this verse? All the alls,

  449. you might circle them all, all the alls and all

  450. the alwayss. Pray all the time, all kinds of prayer

  451. for all you need. Always be ready. Always pray for

  452. all God's people. Circle the alls and the always. That's tenacity.

  453. That's the fifth key to praying for someone's healing. Keep

  454. on praying until God tells you to stop. You don't

  455. like to pray one time and then say, well, forget that.

  456. You just keep praying and you keep praying and keep

  457. praying because God's timing is perfect. You don't know when

  458. it is. Sometimes God does a restoration instantly. Sometimes he

  459. does it in an hour or a day or a week.

  460. Sometimes he takes years. God is responsible for the answer.

  461. We're responsible to ask. All right? So if you need

  462. healing in every area of your life, you need restoration,

  463. first I admit I'm not in control and I evidence

  464. my humility in all those different ways we talked about

  465. and then I ask God for help And I'm not.

  466. I'm not worried about it. I'm bold. Because Jesus tells

  467. me to ask. Because that's what he wants to hear.

  468. He wants to hear you say, God, I need you.

  469. He goes, I know. But I want you to say it.

  470. Because everything in the whole universe I planned for you.

  471. And if my people who are called by my name

  472. will humble themselves, God, I am not in control. You are.

  473. I'm not. You're God. I'm not. Will humble themselves and pray, God,

  474. I need your help. I need you. Oh, I need you.

  475. Then we come to the third premise for the promise.

  476. If my people will humble themselves and pray, and number three,

  477. seek my face. Write this down. Third key, seek God,

  478. not a miracle. I seek God, I seek God's face,

  479. not a miracle. It's okay to want a miracle, that's fine.

  480. It's okay to want healing and restoration, but that's not

  481. what you seek. If my people humble themselves, pray, seek

  482. my face, not seek a miracle, not seek a sign,

  483. Not seek healing.

  484. Not seek prosperity. Not seek a thousand other gifts of God.

  485. Stop seeking the gift and just go, God, I want you.

  486. I want you. I wanna know you. And when you

  487. seek God, you get everything else. But God is not

  488. a vending machine. And there are unfortunately many, millions of

  489. Christians today They spend all their time seeking what God

  490. has to give them and nothing in seeking God himself.

  491. If my people will seek my face, seek him, not

  492. merely the blessing. If my people will seek my face, Lord,

  493. what does that mean? It means, Lord, whether I get

  494. the answer that I want or not, I wanna know you.

  495. Whether I get the healing that I want or not,

  496. whether I get the restoration I want or not, whether

  497. I get the answer I want or not, I am

  498. seeking you. And as I come to you, if I

  499. don't get what I think is best for me, I'm

  500. gonna be satisfied with what you think is best for me.

  501. And out of this whole ordeal, coming out of my

  502. pain in the divorce, coming out of my pain in

  503. the loss of a child, coming out of the miscarriage,

  504. coming out of the being laid off or whatever. I'm

  505. seeking you. Not the blessing, not the gift, not the miracle.

  506. I'm seeking you. I wanna know you, God. Proverbs 8, 17.

  507. God says, I love those who love me and those

  508. who seek me. They find me. Hebrews 11, six. God

  509. rewards those who earnestly seek him. Circle the word earnestly.

  510. This is not some casual pastime. It's not like I'm

  511. gonna seek you in my spare moments. After three TV shows,

  512. I'll seek you. After I do my social media, I'll

  513. seek you. Like you're the low priority. No, this is

  514. a serious pursuit. Who earnestly seek. It's the primary focus

  515. of my life. God, I gotta know you. Because you

  516. made me to know you. You know, you don't become

  517. an Olympic athlete in your spare time. You gotta seek it.

  518. You gotta earnestly seek it. Years ago, my brother played golf,

  519. so I played golf because he played it. I hate golf.

  520. It's the only game you can play your entire life

  521. and never get any better at it. Why would I

  522. do that game, huh? People say, you play golf? Well,

  523. I played at it. A big difference. You say, why

  524. did you play at it? Because I wasn't willing to

  525. invest the time. It's real simple. I just wasn't willing

  526. to invest the time. And to be a pro at

  527. anything requires intensity. You wanna be a pro at prayer,

  528. you gotta invest the time. You wanna be a pro

  529. at knowing God, you gotta invest the time. I gotta

  530. earnestly seek him. What does God want from me more

  531. than anything else? What does God want from you? He

  532. just wants you to seek him. God, I really wanna

  533. get to know you. Look up here at the screen.

  534. The Lord, Psalm 114, verse two. The Lord looks down

  535. from heaven on the entire human race and he looks

  536. to see if there's even one with real understanding. Just

  537. one who seeks for God. What is he saying about

  538. that verse? He's saying, you know, the fact is, most

  539. of my children really don't even seek me. It's really

  540. rare to find somebody who's earnest about seeking God. We

  541. want just enough of God to bless us, but not,

  542. you know, to change us. Deuteronomy, the Bible says this

  543. in chapter four. If you seek the Lord, your God,

  544. you'll find him. If you look for him, with all

  545. your heart, that's the key, and with all your soul.

  546. And when you are in distress and these things have

  547. happened to you, you will return to the Lord your

  548. God and you'll obey him for he's a merciful God

  549. and he will not abandon or destroy you. If you're

  550. stuck in a cycle and year after year after year

  551. you feel like I'm not getting any better, I'm just

  552. kinda stuck. I'm in neutral and I wasn't any better

  553. last year, I'm not sure I'm gonna be any better

  554. this next year. Same situation, relationship still stinks and my

  555. habits still are not where I want them to be.

  556. You're stuck in that cycle. It's cause you're not seriously

  557. seeking God. You gotta seek him with all your heart.

  558. Now you know what? If you'll do that, it's kinda

  559. like humility. God loves the humble. but God goes overboard

  560. for people who seek him. He will bless your socks off.

  561. Look at the next verse. Seek first his kingdom, his righteousness,

  562. and all these other things will be given to you

  563. as well. There's almost nothing God won't do for the

  564. woman or the man that are genuinely seeking God first,

  565. almost nothing. Everything else, I'm gonna take care of it.

  566. It's so rare to find somebody who's truly seeking me.

  567. Other people are seeking blessings from me, miracles from me,

  568. signs from me, but these people actually just wanna know me.

  569. If my people will humble themselves and pray and seek

  570. my face, then he gives us the fourth premise for

  571. the promise. And turn from their wicked ways. Now what

  572. in the world does that mean? So I'll heal you,

  573. but you gotta, number four, turn from my wicked ways.

  574. Write this down, turn my attention. Write this down, turn

  575. my attention from the world to the word. I turn

  576. my attention from the world to the word. Now I

  577. need to define two terms here, the word turn and

  578. the word wicked. because I think we've got a lot

  579. of misunderstandings about this. He says the fourth premise for

  580. the promise is turn from their wicked ways. Okay, first

  581. let's start with wicked ways. Wickedness. What do you think

  582. of when I say the word wicked? You might think

  583. of the Broadway play. I wanna be popular. Wicked, what

  584. do you think of? What most people think of when

  585. we say the word wicked, they think of evil, really

  586. bad and evil stuff that other people do. Assassinations, that's evil,

  587. that's wicked. Sexual rape and abuse, that's wicked. Genocide, that's wicked. Extortion,

  588. that's wicked. Murder, torture, that's wicked. And our idea of

  589. wicked is Hitler and the extreme of evil. Let me

  590. give you a little bit different definition of wicked. What

  591. does the Bible say? You might write this down. Definition,

  592. wickedness is forgetting God. Wickedness is just forgetting God. Anytime

  593. I forget God, that's wicked. Because you were made to

  594. be in fellowship with God. He loves you. He wants

  595. you to love him back. He knows you. He wants

  596. you to know him. Wickedness is not all those other things.

  597. It's forgetting God. And when we forget God, we do

  598. all kinds of other stuff. And when a society forgets God,

  599. society does all kinds of other wicked stuff. But it's

  600. really about forgetting God. Look up here on the screen,

  601. Isaiah 17 verse 10. You have forgotten? You've forgotten the

    Isaiah 17:10

  602. God who saves you. And you have not remembered that

  603. God is your place of safety. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

  604. What's your place of safety? What has been your place

  605. of safety? God says, I'm your place of safety, but

  606. you've just forgotten that. And some of you, you think

  607. your place of safety is your bank account. And some

  608. of you think it's your boyfriend. And some of you

  609. think it's something else, whatever. But God says, I'm your

  610. place of safety. I'm gonna protect you. You're my child.

  611. You're my son. You're my daughter. And what you've done

  612. is you've forgotten that. I've got a message I've been

  613. holding on. I was gonna do it a couple weeks

  614. ago on prayer and memory. And I studied all through

  615. the scriptures from Genesis to Revelation, every verse on forgetting

  616. and remembering. And there are a lot of things God

  617. says I want you to forget. But there are a

  618. lot of things God says I want you to remember.

  619. And one of the things he says, when you've forgotten me,

  620. that's wicked. Okay, now what about turn? Turn from my

  621. forgetting God. Well, the turn, that word there in Romans, Hebrew,

  622. it's the Old Testament, literally means return. It means bring back.

  623. It means repent. It's the word for repent. It says

  624. you don't just turn away from the bad stuff, you

  625. turn to the good stuff. In the Bible, in the

  626. New Testament, it's the Greek word metanoia. Meta means to turn,

  627. and noia is the Greek word for noose, which means

  628. your mind. It means to flip your mind, to change

  629. your mind. Repentance, that's the word, metanoia in the Bible.

  630. Repentance simply means change your mind. I used to think

  631. about God this way, now I think about God that way.

  632. That's repentance. I used to think about, I thought that

  633. was good, now I think this is good. I used

  634. to value that, now I value this. That's repentance. I

  635. used to think God was this, now I think God

  636. is this. I change my mind about life, I change

  637. my mind about success. I change my mind about what matters.

  638. I change my mind about the past, my past. I

  639. change my mind about the future. I change my mind

  640. about love. I change my mind about what matters most.

  641. That is repentance. I am turning my attention. Now most people,

  642. they think of the word repentance, they think of a

  643. negative word. When you say the word repentance, you think

  644. of like a guy on the sidewalk with a street sign.

  645. He's got long scraggly hair and a beard and it

  646. says turn or burn. You're gonna die and fry while

  647. we go to the sky. No, no, that's not repentance.

  648. Repentance is not a negative term. Repentance is the most

  649. positive term in history. When I repented, I turned from

  650. guilt to forgiveness. That was a good deal. When I repented,

  651. I turned from darkness to light. I turned from no

  652. purpose to purpose. I turned from hopeless despair to hope

  653. for eternity. I turned from bitterness to love. It was

  654. the most positive change in my life. If I had

  655. known how positive it is to repent, I would have

  656. done it years earlier. It's not like somebody's trying to

  657. give me cancer. I wish I had known it and

  658. understood it sooner. To turn from darkness to light. From

  659. meaninglessness to meaningfulness. From a life that is shallow to

  660. a life that is significant. That's repentance. It's the most

  661. positive change you can make. To turn away from hell

  662. to heaven. From Satan to God. From no love to

  663. the love of the Father that will never, ever So

  664. when he says turn from their wicked way, he's saying, yeah,

  665. I want you to turn away from that to turn

  666. over here. Change your attention. Change your attention, metanoia. Wrap

  667. it up. Look up here at the screen, Acts 3.19.

  668. The Bible says, repent and turn to God so that

  669. your sins may be wiped out. Anybody like that? I

  670. like that part. And so that times of refreshing may

  671. come from the Lord. I bet you probably need some

  672. times of refreshing in your life. You may need some

  673. times of refreshing in your career. Our nation needs a

  674. time of refreshing. How do we get it? Repent and

  675. turn to God so your sins may be wiped out.

  676. Times of refreshing come from the Lord. Last two verses,

  677. Proverbs 28. If you hide your sins, you're not gonna succeed.

  678. But if you confess them and you reject them, you're

  679. gonna receive mercy. What are you pretending isn't a problem

  680. in your life? What are you pretending isn't a sin?

  681. If anything, we've learned from politicians, and we haven't learned much,

  682. but we have learned that cover up is worse than

  683. the sin. It just makes it worse. It just makes

  684. it worse. If you hide your sins, you will not succeed,

  685. but if you confess and reject them, you're gonna receive mercy. Therefore,

  686. James 5, 16, confess your sins to each other, pray

  687. for each other, so that you may be what? Circle

  688. that word, healed. It all starts with confession. You might

  689. write down there, I need others to help me change.

  690. That's why we have support groups. That's why we have

  691. recovery groups. That's why we have small groups. That's why

  692. we have every kind of possible group you could imagine,

  693. because you need other people to help you change. Confess

  694. your sins to each other, pray for each other, and

  695. you will be healed. If my people, which are called

  696. by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek

  697. my face and turn, repentance, from their evil ways, their

  698. wicked ways, I've stopped forgetting God. Then, three things, I

  699. will hear from heaven, I will forgive their sins, and

  700. I will heal their land. Let's bow our heads. Folks,

  701. this isn't rocket science. It's pretty easy to understand. God

  702. just lays it all out. It's just the real issue

  703. is will we do it? Will you take these steps

  704. right now in your mind, in your heart? Would you start,

  705. if my people will humble themselves, would you say, God,

  706. I wanna admit I'm not in control. I've acted like it,

  707. but I'm not. I've tried to run the shots and

  708. call the shots and it just isn't working very well.

  709. And the harder I try to control things, the more

  710. out of control everything gets. And so today I humble

  711. myself and I'm asking you to guide me and bless

  712. me and give me the power to change and relieve

  713. my stress and all of those things that come if

  714. I walk humbly before you. That list of humble actions

  715. doesn't look very easy to do So God, I'm asking

  716. you to help me to be quiet in the face

  717. of criticism, to pray for my enemies, to immediately confess

  718. my sin to you and all those other things. And

  719. you said, Lord, if my people will pray, I'm asking

  720. for help. Thank you for thinking up the idea of prayer.

  721. I don't even have to worry about is this a

  722. good prayer or not. You just said ask anything and

  723. you'll sort it out. I thank you that you don't

  724. put me down for saying stupid prayers. You just want

  725. me to talk to you. Teach me to pray all

  726. the time, all kinds of prayer, asking all that I

  727. need to always be ready, to always pray for all

  728. God's people, to be tenacious. And Lord, I wanna seek you.

  729. If my people will seek my face, forgive me for

  730. the times I have not sought your face. I've just

  731. sought your blessing. You've said that those who seek you

  732. will find you. I want to find you. And in

  733. this next year, I wanna be closer to you than

  734. ever before. Help me to turn my attention away from

  735. the world to the word. And as I do these things,

  736. I ask you to hear my prayer from heaven. I

  737. ask you to forgive my sins. And I ask you

  738. to heal me, my heart, my body, my mind, my relationships,

  739. my fears, my bad habits, my bad attitudes, my bitterness,

  740. heal my anger, heal my impatience, I want to be

  741. like you, Lord. You're humble. And I humbly ask this

  742. because Jesus already paid for it. And I pray it

  743. in his name. Amen.
