  1. Well, times change, don't they? And

  2. they're changing pretty quickly. Or

  3. maybe I'm just getting old. You know, it

  4. just feels like everything's just

  5. changing so quickly. What you could say

  6. a few years ago, you can't say anymore.

  7. Perhaps those of us who uh got

  8. grandparents or those in the older

  9. generation, um the way they speak

  10. sometimes can be a little bit shocking.

  11. And if you're older, you think, I don't

  12. know what I can say anymore. I don't

  13. know what I can't say. If you're

  14. younger, you think, "No, don't say that.

  15. You're not allowed to say that." And

  16. there's this whole thing cuz everything

  17. is different. Some things are

  18. unacceptable to say these days. I don't

  19. need to tell you that our children are

  20. growing up in a very different world to

  21. to the one that many of us grew up in.

  22. And a big area of change is sexuality.

  23. However, as as advanced as we are in

  24. many areas,

  25. I don't think our world has ever been

  26. more confused

  27. about these things as it is today.

  28. The message of the education system and

  29. the media is that you can be whatever

  30. you want to be.

  31. You can love whoever you want to love

  32. and roide to anyone who doesn't

  33. celebrate that with you or who dares to

  34. disagree with you or even raises a

  35. concern about the things that are

  36. happening.

  37. So much so that any public figure risks

  38. their career if they speak openly about

  39. sexuality in a way that the vocal

  40. minority doesn't approve of.

  41. So what was once outrageous

  42. and clearly wrong in the eyes of many

  43. people has slowly become the accepted

  44. norm.

  45. So that now new generations

  46. say no no no you can't say that that's

  47. wrong.

  48. But can what is right or wrong be

  49. dependent on a particular culture's view

  50. at that precise moment in time? Even our

  51. tastes change, don't they? So our tastes

  52. in in clothes change. So what was super

  53. snazzy a few years ago is no longer

  54. as good. And and in fact, you look silly

  55. or outdated wearing that fat tie or that

  56. thin tie or however it is. You know,

  57. trousers change. It all changes, doesn't

  58. it?

  59. Music style changes, TV styles change,

  60. expectations, tech changes, language

  61. changes from country to country, from

  62. decade to decade. Thoughts, tastes,

  63. opinions change. So is human sexuality

  64. and morality just like fashion? You

  65. know, it comes and it goes and it

  66. changes and we just have to accept that.

  67. Well, what I'll be saying today isn't

  68. acceptable today to today's generation,

  69. and it's certainly not my intention to

  70. offend or upset anyone.

  71. Many of us are touched by these things.

  72. Perhaps some of us struggle with some of

  73. these issues ourselves. And if we don't

  74. ourselves, then we certainly will know

  75. people who struggle with some of these

  76. issues.

  77. But the Bible clearly lays out what is

  78. right and wrong. And this comes from our

  79. maker. What he says will not go out of

  80. fashion. It's not based just on who has

  81. the loudest voice

  82. or on what a fickle culture happens to

  83. decide for five minutes.

  84. And so when we come to the Bible and

  85. hopefully we can move on to the next

  86. slide there. When we come to the Bible,

  87. we need to understand this. We don't

  88. judge God's word by our standards, but

  89. we judge our standards by God's word.

  90. It's important we get that. Otherwise,

  91. we're going to go wrong. Okay? We don't

  92. judge God's word by our standards. We're

  93. not here, the moral elite, having

  94. arrived looking down on God's word

  95. saying, "Oh, no." We judge our standards

  96. and our thinking by God's words.

  97. At the end of May, we started this

  98. series looking at the life and faith of

  99. Abraham and we took a break over the

  100. summer and we had those summer psalms

  101. and we did leave it on a bit of a

  102. cliffhanger. So, let's just quickly

  103. recap. Abraham had been plucked from a

  104. pagan country from obscurity from not

  105. knowing God in he'd been met with God

  106. had been told to leave his old life

  107. behind and embark on a adventure of

  108. faith with God. And God graciously gave

  109. Abraham many wonderful, amazing, huge

  110. promises and most of which hinged on

  111. Abraham having a child which he didn't

  112. have. Not even yet.

  113. And uh things were desperate for Abraham

  114. and Sarah because they were really old.

  115. It was getting a bit absurd really. So

  116. it got to the point where rather than

  117. trusting what God said, they decided to

  118. do something about themselves. And so

  119. Abraham gained for himself a a a child

  120. through Sarah's servant, Hagar.

  121. But Ishmael wasn't the child of the

  122. promise. God said, "No, it's not through

  123. him. Your wife Sarah, she will yet have

  124. a child, and the promises will come

  125. through him. that's the one through whom

  126. whom the blessing will come. But they

  127. were so old and Sarah was having a

  128. really hard time accepting this and

  129. believing this. And so in chapter 18,

  130. the Lord appeared to Abraham with two

  131. with with two angels and promised that

  132. this time next year, Sarah, your wife

  133. will will have a child. You'll have a

  134. son.

  135. And um Abraham sort of gave them a meal

  136. and it was a special moment. And as

  137. those two angels left to head off

  138. towards Sodom, the Lord lingered and

  139. stayed behind to give Abraham the chance

  140. to inquire about what was going on. And

  141. the Lord told him. And then um Abraham

  142. was able to pray, "Lord, would you spare

  143. that city for the sake of say 50

  144. righteous? Would you spare the city?"

  145. And God said, "Yeah, I'll spare the

  146. city. Would you spare it for 45, for 40,

  147. for 30?" And and he whittleled him down.

  148. and and the Lord is willing to spare the

  149. city for the sake of just 10 righteous.

  150. And then the action cuts to Sodom. And

  151. that's where we pick up our story and

  152. our first point, the sinful situation.

  153. When the two investigative angels arrive

  154. at Sodom, Lot is there in the gateway of

  155. the city. That was a place of honor uh

  156. where the distinguished people would

  157. sit. And it seems he's become fully

  158. integrated into that society. Remember

  159. when he first moved in that direction,

  160. he he just camped near the city. Now

  161. he's in the gates of the city. He's got

  162. a house in the city. He has integrated

  163. himself into that culture.

  164. And he's become a man of standing,

  165. perhaps even a magistrate or judge of

  166. some sort. And Lot is fully aware of the

  167. depravity of the people among whom he

  168. lives. In verse three, when the angels

  169. refuse the offer of shelter for the

  170. night, he insists so strongly, it's to

  171. the point of rudeness. He's literally

  172. pressing them and pushing them towards

  173. his house. He's going beyond an

  174. invitation. He's not taking no for an

  175. answer. He's saying, "No, you cannot

  176. stay here. You must come back to my

  177. house. You can't stay here." Why? Well,

  178. culture that the culture was of

  179. hospitality was taken very seriously

  180. back then. But that's not it. This is

  181. more than that. It's because he knows

  182. what his city is like.

  183. The message translation paraphrase um

  184. translates uh chapter 18 verse 20 as the

  185. cries of the victims are deafening.

  186. The cries of the victims of this city

  187. are deafening. If they had reached

  188. heaven, they would have reached Lot. He

  189. knew what was going on. We see from

  190. second Peter chapter 2:7,

  191. Lot, a righteous man who was distressed

  192. by the depraved conduct of the lawless.

  193. Um, for that righteous man living among

  194. them day by day, was tormented in his

  195. righteous soul by the lawless deeds he

  196. saw and heard. So Lot knew exactly what

  197. was going to happen to the these

  198. visitors if they stayed overnight in

  199. Sodom unprotected in the square.

  200. So what was going on?

  201. Well, as the story unfolds, we see that

  202. the town wanted to rape these two men.

  203. Now many people try to explain away

  204. what's happening in these verses

  205. and unfortunately their motives don't

  206. come from a godly desire to submit

  207. themselves to God's word or to genuinely

  208. seek the truth. It comes because

  209. speaking about God's truth in our

  210. culture is deeply unpopular and it wins

  211. you no friends.

  212. It also may come from a desire to excuse

  213. their own desires.

  214. Because if you want something and you

  215. know God's word speaks against it, what

  216. you have to do is either change yourself

  217. or you need to change God's word.

  218. For example, some people suggest that

  219. the townsmen merely wanted to just get

  220. to know them. You know, perhaps check

  221. out their credentials.

  222. And it's true that the language of

  223. knowing can mean that. But readers of

  224. Genesis will be familiar with how know

  225. is often used in the Bible. So uh

  226. Genesis 4:E1.

  227. Now Adam knew Eve his wife and she

  228. conceived. Do you understand what's

  229. being said there? He knew her and a baby

  230. was on the way. And contextually, it's

  231. very clear what's going on. Lot calls

  232. their intentions in verse 7 a wicked

  233. thing. And by their own admission in

  234. verse 9, they plan to mistreat these

  235. guests. And why would Lot offer his

  236. daughters to perclate these towns people

  237. if there was nothing serious happening?

  238. And why after all this does judgment

  239. fall? All this seems a bit over the top.

  240. if all they were suggesting is I just

  241. need to see your passport and let's get

  242. a beer together. It's it's laughable,

  243. isn't it?

  244. Another objection is that homosexuality

  245. per se isn't the issue here, but male

  246. rape.

  247. And that is true. What makes this

  248. situation especially evil is the sexual

  249. violence.

  250. However,

  251. however, inexcusably,

  252. Lot offers the crowd his own two

  253. daughters

  254. to endure the same sexual violence that

  255. the guys were going to face.

  256. So, as abhorrent as that is,

  257. he sees offering up his his daughters as

  258. the lesser of two evils. Now, we

  259. wouldn't agree with him on that, but

  260. that's how he sees it. And the point I'm

  261. trying to make is it's not just the

  262. sexual violence aspect

  263. because he's willing to give his

  264. daughters to face that to save these

  265. guys.

  266. And actually, it doesn't have to be one

  267. or the other. Both elements are sinful.

  268. So Jude verse 7 speaks about how Sodom

  269. indulged in sexual immorality and

  270. pursued unnatural desire or unnatural

  271. flesh. And in that passage, there's no

  272. mention of the violence. Romans 1 makes

  273. it clear that homosexuality

  274. is unnatural and sinful and goes against

  275. God's design for human sexuality.

  276. So yes, horrific uh sexual violence had

  277. become the acceptable practice in that

  278. place. That's undeniable that had been

  279. normalized in that place. But just in

  280. case we imagine that homosexuality

  281. um isn't an issue here and that maybe

  282. it's okay in a loving relationship,

  283. first Timothy chapter 1 lists the

    1 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  284. practicing of homosexuality

  285. along with loads of other sins as

  286. contrary to sound doctrine.

  287. So in Sodom there was widespread

  288. homosexuality

  289. and there was sexual violence. They had

  290. both become the norm and both are

  291. sinful.

  292. So when we come to the Bible and its

  293. teaching on homosexuality, we only have

  294. a few options open to us. Firstly, we

  295. can reject what God says because we

  296. don't like it. though bearing in mind he

  297. did make us so he knows what is best for

  298. us but we can choose to reject that.

  299. Secondly we can embark on mental and

  300. grammatical gymnastics to try and

  301. reinterpret all the passages that

  302. mention it and they might sound quite

  303. convincing at first until you look into

  304. them properly.

  305. Or thirdly, we can accept the plain

  306. reading of the text and accept that God

  307. says that practicing homosexuality is

  308. wrong. And if at some point I or my

  309. culture differs from that, it's me who

  310. needs to change, not God, not his word.

  311. This is part of Christian submission.

  312. When we say you are Lord, we are saying

  313. you know best and I will obey you. I

  314. will submit yourself to you. We don't

  315. say you are Lord except for this bit

  316. where I just firmly disagree with you on

  317. that.

  318. This goes for any other matter we might

  319. find difficult because of our cultures

  320. position. So the roles of men and women,

  321. gender and identity,

  322. who should I be in a relationship with?

  323. The right use of sex, of alcohol, of

  324. other substances. All of these things

  325. are to be governed by the one who made

  326. us and who knows what's best for us.

  327. And all of that might sound really heavy

  328. and hard. But do you know it's actually

  329. a blessing

  330. because in a world that is so confused,

  331. doesn't know who we are or what we are,

  332. if we listen to God, we can know clarity

  333. and not confusion. If we listen to God,

  334. we understand

  335. that's how things are. That's how things

  336. should be.

  337. Does it really matter?

  338. Can't we just ignore God and just just

  339. carry on as we are? What's the big deal?

  340. Well, let's think about that in our our

  341. next point. The weighing and the wroth.

  342. Let's just remember what happened back

  343. in chapter 18:E1 17. The Lord was having

  344. a conversation with Abraham uh or with

  345. himself at this point. He says, "Shall I

  346. hide from Abraham what I am about to

  347. do?" And why did the Lord reveal to

  348. Abraham what he was about to do? The

  349. Lord didn't have to do it. He could have

  350. just gone on with it and done it and

  351. Abraham could have found out later.

  352. Well, if the Lord had suddenly destroyed

  353. Sodom without anything being said,

  354. Abraham would have wondered, "What on

  355. earth happened? Why did that happen?"

  356. Now, this comes just after God's charge

  357. to Abraham in chapter 18:1 19 to command

  358. Abraham's children in the ways of the

  359. Lord. And here we have an illustration

  360. of what it looks like when a people go

  361. away from the Lord. They've gone totally

  362. away from the Lord, Sodom. And so,

  363. Abraham, take note. If you don't

  364. instruct your ways in the the ways of

  365. your children in the ways of the Lord,

  366. the end result will be this. And it's

  367. it's it's awful. So, take it seriously.

  368. This is a stark warning of what happens

  369. when a people disregard God's ways. If

  370. nothing else, this account teaches us

  371. how seriously God views sin. Sin isn't a

  372. life option.

  373. It's deadly rebellion.

  374. But even in the face of this rebellion,

  375. rebellious people, this wickedness, the

  376. Lord invites Abraham's please for mercy.

  377. He doesn't say, "No, no, no, not we're

  378. not going to have mercy." He, "Yeah, I

  379. will be merciful."

  380. He's willing for the sake of just 10 to

  381. spare the whole city.

  382. So, it's not for a lack of mercy that

  383. judgment fell on this city. It's because

  384. of the sin that judgment fell on this

  385. city. Don't be fooled. Sin is deadly

  386. serious. Our culture says it doesn't

  387. really matter. God says yes, it does.

  388. So God loves mercy,

  389. but he won't tolerate sin.

  390. We tend to think if an issue doesn't

  391. hurt somebody or hurt anybody else, you

  392. know, it's okay. But our sin is first

  393. and foremost against God. Now all sin is

  394. deadly

  395. but some sin

  396. is worse than others.

  397. For example, when speaking to Pilate,

  398. Jesus said, "He who delivered me over to

  399. you has the greater sin." Do you see?

  400. Has the greater sin. There was a sin

  401. that was bad, but not quite as bad. And

  402. there was a sin that was bad and worse.

  403. has the greater sin. God isn't unjust

  404. blanket punishing everybody who's done

  405. like that amount of sin or that amount

  406. of sin. You all get the same. God is

  407. just. No one wants to be a sinner. No

  408. one wants to be facing punishment for

  409. for sin for that is that is all deadly.

  410. But God is just.

  411. And there is this concentration of evil

  412. in this place that is such an outcry to

  413. God that to uphold what is right and

  414. just, God must act.

  415. So God sends two angels to investigate.

  416. And we might wonder, well, if God knew,

  417. if God heard the outcry, why does he

  418. need to send these two angels to

  419. investigate what's going on? It could,

  420. he knew already. Well, firstly, he sent

  421. them to save Lot and his family.

  422. It wasn't just on a mission of judgment.

  423. It was a mission of mercy. They gone

  424. there to save Lot and his family. It's

  425. amazing the lengths that God has goes to

  426. to save his people. Sometimes, if you're

  427. here,

  428. it's because God is at work in your

  429. life. He's drawn you here.

  430. He's giving you the chance to hear and

  431. be saved.

  432. God is at work. He's working mercy in

  433. your life even right now.

  434. So that's the first reason he sent the

  435. angels because they were there to save

  436. Lot. Secondly, it was to demonstrate to

  437. Abraham and any other wouldbe objectors.

  438. God's justice isn't administered from

  439. afar without all the facts and all the

  440. details. No, God sent the angels. They

  441. go into that situation. They experience

  442. that situation firsthand. They know when

  443. a decision when a judgment is made it is

  444. because God knows and Abraham had to see

  445. that. So when we come to this account of

  446. God's wroth and judgment we need to bear

  447. in mind God was willing to be merciful

  448. and spare the whole city for the sake of

  449. even just 10 righteous. And secondly he

  450. didn't make an uninformed decision. The

  451. judge sent undercover investigators to

  452. the crime scene.

  453. And what did they find? Did they find

  454. 50?

  455. Did they find 40 righteous? Did they

  456. find 30? Did they find 20 righteous? Did

  457. they even find just 10 righteous people

  458. in that city? The language is very

  459. clear. Chapter 19:4.

  460. But before they lay down, the men of the

  461. city, the men of Sodom, both young and

  462. old, all

  463. all the people to the last man

  464. surrounded the house.

  465. By that inclusion there all the people I

  466. think we're meant to understand from

  467. that that there is not even one

  468. righteous

  469. it's not even one righteous is is all

  470. the people the whole city are involved

  471. in this in one way or another

  472. must be terrifying to have this mob

  473. surrounding your house can you imagine

  474. banging on the walls banging on the

  475. shutters banging on the doors shouting

  476. there's no 999 to call there's no police

  477. there's no help help there's nothing you

  478. can do you are surrounded by a mob who

  479. wants something

  480. and Lot or whatever other his failings

  481. are, he is extremely brave here, he goes

  482. out and tries to talk to them,

  483. but they won't listen. In fact, Lot is

  484. so desperate to avoid this awful sin

  485. that he suggest suggests something

  486. really grotesque. He offers his own

  487. daughters.

  488. And that I think is unthinkable to to

  489. anyone really, isn't it? But I think

  490. what that shows us is that even this

  491. righteous man's thinking

  492. has been affected,

  493. influenced by his culture. So I think we

  494. can appreciate his motives are noble. He

  495. wants to save these visitors, but the

  496. way he goes about doing it is absolutely

  497. unacceptable.

  498. How awful to imagine that was a viable

  499. solution. But he does.

  500. I think that just goes to show that our

  501. thinking

  502. is not immune to the culture we live in.

  503. Don't assume that any of us are morally

  504. neutral as if we can preside over all

  505. the cultures that have ever been and we

  506. are the ones who can made the uh the the

  507. the informed decision. You know, we

  508. we're the ones that we've got it right.

  509. We are the ones who are morally absolute

  510. and we can make that right judgment. No,

  511. because every single one of us are

  512. influenced by our culture and by our

  513. upbringing and by everything around us.

  514. And you know that is why we have to rely

  515. on the word of God because that

  516. transcends culture.

  517. We can't trust our own thinking in this.

  518. We have to go Lord I I don't know. I

  519. think that, I struggle with that, and

  520. that's a problem. But Lord, I submit to

  521. you because you were the one who goes

  522. above everything else.

  523. So, the crowd's uh reaction, what is the

  524. crowd's reaction to Lot's dubious offer?

  525. Verse 9, get out of the way. Who is this

  526. foreigner to judge us anyway? And

  527. they're pushing. They're pressing hard.

  528. They will not stop. They will not

  529. listen. And so, the angelic

  530. investigation becomes an angelic rescue.

  531. They reach out. They pull lots safely

  532. back into the house and they blind the

  533. the men outside. It's disturbing to see

  534. them. The men are still groping for the

  535. door even though they're blind. I mean,

  536. what is that? It's awful, isn't it?

  537. They these these men, they've been found

  538. weighed and and wanting. And so, despite

  539. God's willingness to show mercy, there

  540. weren't even 10 righteous people.

  541. There's barely even one.

  542. Sadly, it's not hard to see some

  543. comparisons with the UK, is it?

  544. These men weren't ashamed of what they

  545. were doing. They had allowed their

  546. sexual desires to run out of control.

  547. So that what was once unthinkable,

  548. slowly and gradually that that became

  549. the norm.

  550. Now thankfully our society is deeply

  551. disapproves of sexual violence.

  552. However,

  553. according to statistics, a huge

  554. percentage of pornography includes

  555. violence of some kind.

  556. So on one hand society public our

  557. society publicly says sexual violence is

  558. unacceptable. We will not tolerate that.

  559. On the other hand, there are many men

  560. who are enjoying watching sexual

  561. violence in private. And do you know

  562. what happens when something is done in

  563. private? It has a way of working its way

  564. out and through the society. You can't

  565. keep them separate. It will come out.

  566. And the danger is what is shocking to us

  567. now will gradually become the norm. And

  568. elements of our society certainly are

  569. proud of homosexuality, aren't they? So

  570. we have the marches, we have the films,

  571. we have the songs, the education, all

  572. telling us it's okay. It's not a sin.

  573. You know, love is love. and and there's

  574. a targeted backlash against anyone who

  575. dares to say actually no that is not the

  576. way things should be.

  577. Taylor Swift sings a song uh called you

  578. need to calm down and that's directed

  579. against anyone who dares to speak out

  580. about these things. Just just calm down,

  581. she sings. Who are you to judge us?

  582. It's true that some Christians haven't

  583. responded with much grace to the the

  584. struggles that people face.

  585. And it's true that the church's reaction

  586. has often not been one of mercy and

  587. compassion.

  588. And and we need to remember that Jesus

  589. didn't treat people in a hateful way.

  590. He didn't humiliate them or abuse them

  591. or insult them. In fact, he was called

  592. the friend of sinners.

  593. They accused him of welcoming sinners.

  594. He ate with them.

  595. So when people are struggling with sin

  596. and confusion and feelings and emotions

  597. that they don't understand or perhaps

  598. even want,

  599. should not we who know how dark our own

  600. pits of sin are be willing to extend

  601. mercy

  602. and grace and love.

  603. But to love someone

  604. means being honest with them, doesn't

  605. it? Jesus never affirmed or celebrated

  606. or excused sin.

  607. He pointed it out. He told people to

  608. leave their life of sin. He warned them

  609. of the consequences of sin.

  610. But the reaction of our culture is the

  611. same as Sodom's. Don't don't don't judge

  612. us. be quiet, calm down, sit down, get

  613. out of our way.

  614. But the consequence of sin, not just

  615. sexual sin, the consequence of all sin,

  616. whether that be great or small, the

  617. consequence of sin is judgment.

  618. It's easy to get under under the collar

  619. about certain obvious sins. But in 1

    1 Corinthians 6 chapter mention

  620. Corinthians chapter 6, homosexuality is

  621. listed alongside other things like

  622. theft, greed, drunkenness, slandering,

  623. and swindling. In Colossians chapter

  624. 3:5, Paul says, "Because of these, the

  625. wroth of God is coming."

  626. Because of these, the wroth of God is

  627. coming. And when what we see in Sodom is

  628. the outpouring of God's wroth upon

  629. sinners. Now, God's wroth isn't like

  630. ours. It's not out of control. uh it's

  631. not out of control reaction. It is the

  632. considered and measured reaction of a

  633. holy and righteous God against evil. And

  634. in this account, we clearly see what

  635. happens when people ignore God and just

  636. do what is right in their own eyes. And

  637. so what we need to know is it's what God

  638. says that matters, not what the media

  639. says, not what your friends say, not

  640. what films say or songs say or pop

  641. culture says or anything else. God tells

  642. us what is right and wrong and he is the

  643. judge and he will judge according to

  644. what is truly right. We need to know

  645. that and understand that otherwise we're

  646. going to get it wrong.

  647. Well, with such a serious fate awaiting

  648. them, Lot is instructed to warn those

  649. who might listen. You've got any other

  650. people in the city? Go warn them. So he

  651. tries to war on his daughter's fiances,

  652. but they think he's joking. How tragic

  653. that is. They think he's joking. How

  654. like today when people just think we're

  655. crazy to talk about these things or

  656. we're old-fashioned or bigoted or

  657. whatever. Just be quiet. Just get out

  658. the way. Just stay in your box. You

  659. know, they think we're joking. They

  660. can't take it seriously. But we still

  661. must warn people, mustn't we? Our

  662. message is exceedingly unpopular.

  663. But with wisdom and compassion and love

  664. and kindness, we must share. There is a

  665. better way.

  666. There is a way of mercy. There is a way

  667. of forgiveness. There is renewal and

  668. transformation in Christ. Justice and

  669. judgment that is part of our message.

  670. But there is also mercy and there is new

  671. life in Christ. For whatever our

  672. struggles are, he can make us new.

  673. But before the judgment fell, even in

  674. Sodom, there was mercy. There was a

  675. rescue. Some will be saved. And that's

  676. our final brief point, the rescue of the

  677. reluctant.

  678. There are probably some things that you

  679. don't really want to run to. You don't

  680. have an urge to do like the hoovering or

  681. the washing up or emptying the bins or

  682. the weeding or the shopping or even

  683. getting out of bed. You know, you might

  684. just think, "Oh, I'll do it later."

  685. And Lot has had all night to get ready.

  686. But when dawn comes, the angels have to

  687. urge him, you know, get up. Could it be

  688. he fell asleep? Could it be he was just

  689. so busy packing all his knick-knacks or

  690. whatever? I don't know. Maybe he's just

  691. lying there just not quite believing.

  692. But in verse 15, they say, "Up. Get out

  693. of here lest you be swept up in the

  694. punishment." And in verse 16, he still

  695. hesitates. So the men grab him by the

  696. hand and lead them to safety. This is

  697. God's mercy. Do you see? By himself,

  698. he's just going to say, "Oh, I don't

  699. know what all the the rush is about. I'm

  700. just going to chill out here for a bit

  701. longer." vers. God says, "No, you need

  702. to go now. Come with me." And that could

  703. be the same as as us. We hear about the

  704. cross. We see God's ways,

  705. but how we can delay walking in them.

  706. But when they're finally out the city,

  707. they're told, "Flee for their lives.

  708. Don't look back. Don't stop." But as we

  709. well know, Lot's wife did look back.

  710. probably

  711. it may not have been just a quick glance

  712. like oh that oh that was a mistake you

  713. know I don't think that was the idea I

  714. think the idea is more of a lingering

  715. look a look of regret [snorts]

  716. a longer look she was probably born in

  717. Sodom she was probably happy there with

  718. the lifestyle happy with their home

  719. happy with all that they enjoyed and

  720. when they left she left her heart there

  721. and she looks back with that longing.

  722. Look, I I don't really want to leave.

  723. Like the Israelites when they had left

  724. slavery in Egypt and then times got

  725. tough and they they looked back with

  726. longing. Oh, do you remember how good it

  727. was back there? When we start following

  728. Jesus, we need to look at him. We don't

  729. look back. We delight ourselves in him.

  730. And so, we resist the call to return to

  731. our old lives because he's going to be

  732. there calling you. Come back. Remember

  733. those pleasures you enjoyed. remember

  734. how you used to enjoy doing those

  735. things. And so what do we do? We can't

  736. just exercise self-control 100% of the

  737. time. We need to replace something that

  738. with something else. And we replace it

  739. with Christ. We look to him. Colossians

  740. chapter 3:2, "Set your minds on things

  741. above that are above, not on things that

  742. are on earth. For you have died and your

  743. life is hidden with Christ in God. When

  744. Christ who is your life appears, then

  745. you also will appear with him in glory."

  746. Set your minds on those things.

  747. But her mind was not set on the Lord. Or

  748. perhaps perhaps she doubted. Perhaps she

  749. doubted that the Lord was actually going

  750. to do that. After all, all she had known

  751. was that place would would this foreign

  752. god, this God of Lot, would he really do

  753. this thing? She had heard of nothing

  754. like that. Can she really take that

  755. seriously? And she's looking there think

  756. I can't see anything yet, Lot. I can't

  757. see anything. Perhaps that can be said

  758. for us. We live in the world. We can't

  759. escape the world. But are we living as

  760. those with that expectation that the

  761. judge, our savior, the Lord Jesus will

  762. return? Perhaps we've got a little bit

  763. too comfortable and we forget that. But

  764. for those who are in Christ, we are just

  765. passing through. This is not our home.

  766. We are passing through this place.

  767. And perhaps our comfort with the world,

  768. perhaps our this is really going to

  769. happen. Is God really going to judge the

  770. world? Perhaps that is shown in our lack

  771. of urgency when it comes to sharing the

  772. gospel.

  773. I wonder if we've really got that I need

  774. to share Jesus. I I need to sh They need

  775. to know about Jesus. Perhaps that's how

  776. we know how seriously we take these

  777. things is how seriously we're sharing

  778. Jesus. Jesus warned in Luke chapter 17.

    Luke 17 chapter mention

  779. It should appear on the screen for us.

  780. Just as it was in the days of Noah, so

  781. also it will be in the days of the son

  782. of man. People were eating and drinking,

  783. marrying and being given in marriage up

  784. to the days of Noah entered the ark.

  785. Then the flood came and destroyed them

  786. all. It was the same in the days of Lot.

  787. People were eating and drinking, buying

  788. and selling, planting and building. But

  789. the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur

  790. rained down from heaven and destroyed

  791. them all.

  792. So we need to be ready. We need to take

  793. God seriously.

  794. We need to warn others of his coming.

  795. For as in the days of Noah, as in the

  796. days of Lot, the day of the Lord is

  797. coming.

  798. I wonder,

  799. are you

  800. ready?

  801. Have you allowed Jesus to grasp your

  802. hand and lead you to the safety of the

  803. cross?

  804. Or are you still dragging your heels

  805. because you're in love with your CNA and

  806. you just really don't want to leave it?

  807. You know, centuries later

  808. is outside another city that all of

  809. these threads come together.

  810. In that place, the only truly righteous

  811. man was hanging on a cross.

  812. And it's because of God's mercy towards

  813. sinners like you and me. God put our sin

  814. upon that one true righteous man. So all

  815. of our sexual sin, all of our lies, our

  816. greed, our pride, our abuse, our

  817. violence, our selfishness, our slander,

  818. all of our lust, all of those things

  819. that we've done. If we are in Christ,

  820. God has taken that sin and he's put it

  821. on the Lord Jesus. And on the cross, God

  822. God poured out his wroth for our sin

  823. onto Jesus so that we could be pardoned

  824. and forgiven and so that we could live.

  825. So the cross is the place of of mercy.

  826. The cross is the place of safety, the

  827. place where the justice of God was

  828. satisfied. Jesus came to rescue you.

  829. He came to rescue you.

  830. You do not have to be swept away in the

  831. coming judgment. So I urge you, don't

  832. put it off.

  833. Don't gamble your eternity.

  834. Don't drag your heels.

  835. Don't look back. Leave what is perishing

  836. and embrace a new life in Jesus. Accept

  837. Jesus. Follow Jesus. Submit to Jesus

  838. and live.

  839. Let's just be quiet before the Lord for

  840. a moment.

  841. Father God, we acknowledge that no one

  842. is righteous. There's not a single

  843. person here that before your allseeing,

  844. all knowing presence can stand up and

  845. saying, "Yeah, I'm righteous."

  846. We all have failed. We have all fallen

  847. short. And Father, we pray for your help

  848. and your mercy. Lord, as we come to

  849. celebrate the cross, Lord, we remember

  850. that we, like everyone, needs

  851. compassion. So, we pray for your help in

  852. these things in Jesus name. Amen.
