  1. You're listening to a message from our

  2. weekly worship at Christ Church in Bethl

  3. Park, Pennsylvania. We're a United

  4. Methodist congregation with the mission

  5. of building inclusive community, sharing

  6. Christ's transforming love. To learn

  7. more about the church, including how you

  8. can join us for worship online or in

  9. person, visit christyouumc.net.

  10. Thank you for listening.

  11. Today's scripture reading comes from the

  12. New Testament. Paul's letter to the

  13. Ephesians chapter 3 20 and 21.

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  14. Hear now this reading from the New

  15. Testament.

  16. Now to him who is able to do

  17. immeasurably more than we all ask or

  18. imagine according to his power that is

  19. at work within us. To him be glory in

  20. the church and in Christ Jesus

  21. throughout all generations forever and

  22. ever.

  23. Amen. Hear what the spirit is saying to

  24. the church.

  25. >> Thanks be to God.

  26. >> Thank you, Mark.

  27. It's a new month. It's a new season. And

  28. it is a new sermon series. We are

  29. excited about this series because

  30. throughout these next few weeks, we have

  31. the chance to bring to light the

  32. hallmarks of being a disciple of Jesus.

  33. And we've called this series Unsung

  34. because there are parts of being a

  35. disciple that we don't talk about quite

  36. as much as others that maybe don't get

  37. as much attention as others do. But for

  38. people who want to follow Jesus with

  39. their whole hearts and with their whole

  40. lives, these are the things that we must

  41. possess or that we must do even if they

  42. happen to fly a little bit under the

  43. radar. And we start this series with

  44. guidance. The act of turning to God for

  45. wisdom and direction as we work to walk

  46. a life of faith. If we want to live as

  47. devoted followers, we need to be in the

  48. habit of seeking guidance from God.

  49. If we don't begin by seeking God's

  50. guidance first and foremost, then

  51. nothing else we do will ever be right.

  52. The hard thing about seeking and

  53. accepting God's guidance, and we've

  54. acknowledged this in recent sermons, is

  55. that it in doing it takes the control

  56. out of our hands and gives it entirely

  57. to God. And that feels almost impossible

  58. for a lot of us to do. I think the key

  59. to being able to trust God's guidance is

  60. found in today's scripture. It's a

  61. favorite of mine. I know it's a favorite

  62. of many of yours. And the interesting

  63. thing about this passage is that uh we

  64. love it even though it is all about

  65. giving up control and completely

  66. trusting God to guide our way.

  67. In order to trust God to guide us, we

  68. have to know who God is. We have to

  69. trust that God is who he says he is. So

  70. who is God and what can God do? That's

  71. what the verses from today talk about.

  72. So listen again to the words of verse 20

  73. which is the first verse that Mark just

  74. read for you now to God who is able to

  75. do immeasurably more than all we ask or

  76. imagine according to his power that is

  77. at work within us. So what do we learn

  78. about God in this verse? First we learn

  79. that God is able.

  80. Our God is able to do big incredible

  81. things. Stories of these miracles are

  82. scattered all throughout scripture

  83. scripture. God created the heavens and

  84. earth. God parted the Red Sea. God

  85. stopped the sun from moving for a little

  86. bit. And God provided mana falling from

  87. heaven.

  88. But what we can't lose sight of is the

  89. fact that the same God who orchestrated

  90. those miracles in nature also cares for

  91. us as people, as individuals.

  92. God heard and answered Hannah's cry for

  93. a child. Hagar's please in the desert

  94. and Jabz's prayer for healing.

  95. God is able to do big things and small

  96. things including placing each star in

  97. the sky and knowing the hearts of each

  98. one of us.

  99. 2 Chronicles chapter 20 tells the story

    2 Chronicles 20 chapter mention

  100. of Jehoshaphat who was the king of Judah

  101. for about 25 years in the mid 800s BC.

  102. At one point during the course of his

  103. reign, Jehoshaphat got the very

  104. frightening news that a massive army

  105. comprised of three neighboring lands was

  106. on its way to fight the citizens of

  107. Judah. And the Bible tells us that upon

  108. hearing this, Jehoshaphat was terrified.

  109. He was the king and the people trusted

  110. him to help them survive the onslaught

  111. that was coming.

  112. The people turned to Jehoshaphat for

  113. guidance and then Jehoshaphat turned to

  114. God. He realized that this situation was

  115. more than he could handle on his own.

  116. And the New Living Translation passage

  117. of scripture says that Jehoshaphat

  118. begged the Lord for guidance.

  119. Jehoshaphat believed fundamentally that

  120. God was able,

  121. that God was able to do more than he

  122. could do by himself.

  123. Back to our verse from today. Now to God

  124. who is able to do immeasurably more.

  125. The second thing we learn about God from

  126. this verse is that God is doing far more

  127. than what we can see. We already said

  128. that God created the heavens and the

  129. earth. But did you know that even with

  130. all of the scientific tools that we have

  131. at our disposal, scientists believe that

  132. we can only see about 5% of the totality

  133. of the universe. We can only see a tiny

  134. fraction of what God has created.

  135. And the same is true for our own lives.

  136. If you think about it, we don't know

  137. everything. We know the date we're born.

  138. We don't know the date we're going to

  139. die. And we don't know everything that's

  140. going to happen in between those dates.

  141. We cannot see the bigger picture. We

  142. can't see what God has in store for us

  143. because we can only see the small part

  144. that is right in front of us. But God

  145. can see it all.

  146. If we believe that God is able to do big

  147. things and small things, then the next

  148. step is believing that God is able to

  149. see a bigger picture to know how those

  150. big things and small things fit together

  151. to form God's plan.

  152. After King Jehoshaphat sought the

  153. guidance of God, he gathered the people

  154. of his kingdom together so that they

  155. could fast and pray and seek guidance

  156. together.

  157. Then Jehoshaphat prayed out loud to God.

  158. And this is part of what he said in that

  159. prayer.

  160. Oh Lord, God of our ancestors, you alone

  161. are the God who is in heaven. You are

  162. the ruler of all the kingdoms of earth.

  163. You are powerful and mighty. No one can

  164. stand against you. And now see what the

  165. armies of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir

  166. are doing. Oh our God, won't you stop

  167. them? We are powerless against this

  168. mighty army that is about to attack us.

  169. Don't miss the significance of the very

  170. honest words that Jehoshaphat prayed.

  171. Kings are supposed to be all powerful.

  172. They are supposed to be able to deal

  173. with all situations and protect their

  174. people at all times. That's the job

  175. description, right?

  176. Jehoshaphat gathered his people together

  177. and instead of being prideful and

  178. egotistical and refusing to ask for

  179. help, he prayed. He prayed to the God of

  180. their ancestors, which means that he

  181. believed that God transcended time. He

  182. acknowledged both God's power that was

  183. mightier than his and that God could see

  184. what was happening when Jehoshaphat

  185. could not. And then he said three words

  186. that you will likely never hear another

  187. king admit.

  188. We are powerless.

  189. What Jehoshaphat knew and what he was a

  190. good enough leader to admit to publicly

  191. was that he could not stop the evil from

  192. coming. His army could not stop it. But

  193. he knew that God was able to do

  194. immeasurably more than he could.

  195. Back to today's scripture.

  196. Now to God who is able to do

  197. immeasurably more than all we ask or

  198. imagine.

  199. The third thing we learn about God in

  200. this verse is that God's abilities to

  201. guide us go far beyond what our human

  202. brains can even comprehend. Not just

  203. that we can see but that we can

  204. comprehend. As humans we have not only

  205. have limitations to what we can do

  206. physically but we have limitations on

  207. what we can even dream up.

  208. So let me ask you a question.

  209. How do you talk to God?

  210. Do you approach God with a list of

  211. requests? Do you tell God exactly what

  212. you want to happen, how to fulfill those

  213. requests?

  214. Or do you approach God and ask for

  215. guidance and then ask for the courage to

  216. follow that guidance wherever it takes

  217. you?

  218. When we tell God what should happen,

  219. instead of placing our lives and placing

  220. our prayers in God's hand and seeking

  221. God's guidance,

  222. we are putting human constraints on a

  223. God who has none.

  224. Our prayers and our plans have limits.

  225. Our God is limitless.

  226. I just told you that Jehoshaphat prayed

  227. with his people. Now, let me share the

  228. last line of that prayer with you. Right

  229. after Jehoshaphat admitted that he was

  230. powerless, this is what he said to God.

  231. We do not know what to do, but we are

  232. looking to you for help.

  233. Jehoshaphat didn't come to God with a

  234. prepackaged solution for which he wanted

  235. a stamp of approval. He didn't come with

  236. any ideas at all. Instead, he approached

  237. the throne of God with nothing but faith

  238. and trust.

  239. He admitted that he did not know what to

  240. do and he turned everything over to God.

  241. He trusted the guidance of a God who

  242. could see and do things that Jehoshaphat

  243. in his army could not and who was

  244. capable of more than Jehoshaphat could

  245. even think to ask or imagine.

  246. God answered Jehoshaphat's prayer and

  247. said to the people of Judah, "Do not be

  248. afraid. Don't be discouraged by this

  249. mighty army for the battle is not yours,

  250. it is mine.

  251. Then God told them that that while they

  252. still needed to go and face the army,

  253. that part had not changed. They would

  254. not have to fight the battle. God would

  255. do it physically for them.

  256. And Jehoshaphat's response to all of

  257. that, he bowed down and worshiped God.

  258. And when the people of Judah saw him

  259. doing that, saw their king bowing down,

  260. they also bowed down and worshiped God.

  261. Here, verse 20 from today's scripture

  262. one more time.

  263. Now to God who is able to do

  264. immeasurably more than all we ask or

  265. imagine according to his power that is

  266. at work within us.

  267. The final thing we learn about God in

  268. this verse is that God is not just

  269. watching us from a distance. God has put

  270. his power to work within us to take us

  271. wherever it is that God wants us to go.

  272. We can't get to where God wants us to go

  273. on our own. We can only do things God is

  274. guiding us to do if we trust that we

  275. have God's power working inside of us

  276. that will make that happen.

  277. After the people of Judah worshiped God,

  278. they went out to face the army.

  279. And the ones that they chose to stand in

  280. front of the group, the first line of

  281. defense against this in massive army

  282. that was coming their way was not the

  283. strongest soldiers, but the strongest

  284. singers.

  285. They were appointed by Jehoshaphat to

  286. lead the way and to sing repeatedly.

  287. Give thanks to the Lord for his faithful

  288. love endures forever. So, I would like

  289. to posit that the four of you are now in

  290. charge and that whenever we go to

  291. battle, you're up first.

  292. So, let's just stop for a second because

  293. all all faith in your abilities to to

  294. fight an army aside, that's a crazy

  295. thing to say. That's crazy. If a

  296. commanding officer of any of our armed

  297. forces today announced that the plan for

  298. going into battle against any of our

  299. enemies was not to take up our arms, but

  300. to warm up our voices, I can guarantee

  301. that person wouldn't have a job anymore.

  302. And I can 99% guarantee that they would

  303. be undergoing some serious psychological

  304. testing.

  305. And then think about how those singers

  306. felt.

  307. No weapon but their voice against an

  308. army that was three times as big as what

  309. they had. I think it's pretty safe to

  310. say that they were afraid. And while

  311. they may not have had anything to

  312. physically fight with, what they did

  313. know that they had was the power of God

  314. fighting for them.

  315. Being faithful to God and to following

  316. God's guidance does not mean you are not

  317. afraid. It means that your trust is

  318. greater than your fear.

  319. And so they marched and the plan worked.

  320. Remember that massive army was formed by

  321. three separate armies. And while the

  322. singers were singing their thanks to and

  323. their love for God, God turned those

  324. three armies against each other. And

  325. they destroyed each other without the

  326. people of Judah ever having to lift a

  327. weapon. The Bible says not one person in

  328. that large army survived and not one

  329. person from Judah died.

  330. They could not do that on their own. But

  331. God's power working through them gave

  332. them the strength to follow his guidance

  333. and stand faithfully singing as God

  334. neutralized the threat against them.

  335. Verse 20 shows us who God is. So we know

  336. that we can trust God.

  337. And then verse 21 tells us our response

  338. to knowing who God is. It says this, "To

  339. God be the glory in the church and in

  340. Christ Jesus throughout all generations

  341. forever and ever."

  342. It is critical that we give God the

  343. glory for all that God does, that we do

  344. not take credit for it ourselves. It's

  345. vital that we point to God and give him

  346. all the praise so that generations after

  347. us will know how we accomplish things

  348. that we would not otherwise have been

  349. able to accomplish without the power of

  350. God working in us.

  351. Scripture says that when that battle

  352. such that it was was over,

  353. all the men of Judah returned home

  354. joyfully led by Jehoshaphat. For the

  355. Lord had given them cause to rejoice

  356. over their enemies. They entered the

  357. city. They went to the temple of the

  358. Lord. They took their harps and their

  359. liars and their trumpets to worship and

  360. praise the God who was able and who had

  361. done immeasurably more than they could

  362. have asked or imagined according to the

  363. power that God gave them.

  364. The story of Jehoshaphat is not about a

  365. king who knew what to do.

  366. It's about a king who knew where to turn

  367. when he did not know what to do.

  368. 25 years ago this Friday, 40 strangers

  369. got on a plane in Newark, New Jersey.

  370. Flight 93 was supposed to land in San

  371. Francisco hours later.

  372. I'm sure you remember the story of what

  373. happened on the plane before it

  374. ultimately crashed in Shanksville. And

  375. I'm sure you remember many of the

  376. passenger stories, including that of

  377. Todd Beamers. But I want to share with

  378. you just one thing about what happened

  379. with Todd Beamer that I think highlights

  380. exactly what we are talking about today.

  381. From inside that plane after the

  382. hijackers had taken over the cockpit,

  383. Todd Beamer made a phone call from that

  384. phone that was in the back of the seat

  385. and he was able to connect with an

  386. airphone operator. He talked to her for

  387. 13 minutes.

  388. At the end of that call, before he and

  389. his fellow passengers took any action,

  390. Todd asked the operator if she would

  391. pray the Lord's Prayer with him.

  392. Now, I want you to think about the

  393. Lord's Prayer for a second. That is

  394. fundamentally a prayer for guidance.

  395. When we say it in just a few minutes, I

  396. want you to listen to it with fresh

  397. ears. I think sometimes because we say

  398. it week after week, we kind of just say

  399. it out of memory and we don't really

  400. hear the words that we're saying. Listen

  401. to it. Listen to it as if for the first

  402. time when we say it later. Because when

  403. we pray the Lord's Prayer, we ask God

  404. for things like our daily bread and for

  405. God's will to be done. What we do not do

  406. as part of praying that prayer is tell

  407. God how to do those things.

  408. In the final moments of his life,

  409. Todd Beamer asked God to do what?

  410. to deliver us from evil.

  411. Did God answer that prayer that day the

  412. way that Todd and his fellow passengers

  413. and their families would have wanted?

  414. Absolutely not. No way.

  415. But was God guiding the passengers that

  416. day as that prayer was answered in in a

  417. different way? Absolutely yes.

  418. Lisa Beamer was Todd Beamer's wife. And

  419. I've shared part of her story before,

  420. but I think it bears repeating,

  421. especially today, and again, especially

  422. in light of what we're talking about.

  423. Lisa's father passed away when she was

  424. 15 years old. And she wrote in her

  425. autobiography that she authored after

  426. Todd had passed away that she spent

  427. years being angry with God because she

  428. couldn't figure out why God took her

  429. husband, I'm sorry, took her father away

  430. from her at a time when she needed him

  431. the most.

  432. When Todd died, Lisa was left to raise

  433. her two sons and her unborn daughter on

  434. her own.

  435. And Lisa wrote in her book that it was

  436. then after he passed away that she

  437. finally understood, that she finally saw

  438. part of God's plan. She said she

  439. realized that walking through the death

  440. of her father had uniquely equipped her

  441. to help her own children through that

  442. very same loss in a way that she could

  443. not have done if that had not happened

  444. to her.

  445. We can't see the bigger plan,

  446. but God can.

  447. Asking for God's guidance means trusting

  448. that God is working all things, even

  449. awful things,

  450. to bring that plan to fruition.

  451. It means trusting God to guide us no

  452. matter where God takes us or what God

  453. asks us to do.

  454. Jehoshaphat did not know what to do, but

  455. Jehoshaphat knew who to turn to for

  456. guidance.

  457. Todd Beamer did not know what to do, but

  458. Todd Beamer knew who to turn to for

  459. guidance.

  460. Because they knew who God was when it

  461. came to these turning points in these

  462. men's lives, they did not hesitate to

  463. give their circumstances fully to God

  464. and let God guide them wherever God

  465. wanted them to be, no matter the

  466. outcome.

  467. There are going to be times when we

  468. won't know what to do.

  469. But do we know who to turn to for

  470. guidance?

  471. Most of us, I think, pray a version of

  472. this prayer. God, guide me to the life I

  473. want.

  474. But when we have our full trust in God,

  475. when we are seeking God's guidance at

  476. all times and we are willing to follow,

  477. our prayer becomes this.

  478. God, guide me into what you want to

  479. accomplish. even if it is bigger,

  480. different or harder than I imagined

  481. so that you receive all the glory.

  482. Seek God's guidance,

  483. trust God, and do not limit God.

  484. And above all, know that the God who is

  485. able to do immeasurably more than we ask

  486. or imagine will never guide you astray.

  487. Let us pray.

  488. God, we are people who are seeking to

  489. hear your voice.

  490. We are seeking to follow you. And so we

  491. pray today that you would guide us, that

  492. you would guide us wherever it is you

  493. want us to go for the fulfillment of

  494. your plan. We trust you because we know

  495. that you are able. We know that you are

  496. good. And so we pray today not only for

  497. ears to hear that guidance, but for

  498. courage to take the steps to follow it.

  499. Help us to remember that you are with us

  500. every step of the way and that you will

  501. never take us off course, take us away

  502. from your plan, but that you have good

  503. things in store for us. In Jesus name we

  504. pray. Amen.

  505. >> Amen.
