  4. Then it says this. Then his mother

  5. and his brothers came to him, but they

  6. could not reach him because of the crowd.

  7. And he was told your mother and your

  8. brothers are standing outside desi to see you.

  9. But he answered them, my mother and brothers

  10. are those who hear the word of God

  11. and do it.

  12. The 22, 1 day, he got into the

  13. boat with his disciples, and he said to

  14. them let us go across to the other

  15. side of the lake. So they set out.

  16. And as they sailed, he fell asleep. And

  17. a wind storm came down on the lake,

  18. and they were filled with

  19. and they were filled with water and were

  20. in danger,

  21. and they went and woke him saying master,

  22. master, we were perish and he woke he

  23. rebuked the wind and the raging waves and

  24. they ceased,

  25. and there was a calm.

  26. And he said to them, where is your

  27. faith?

  28. And they were afraid and they marvel saying

  29. to 1 another, who then is this,

  30. that he commands even the winds in the

  31. water and they

  32. obey him. This is the word of the

  33. lord.

  34. Father we pray that you draw near to

  35. us, Lord.

  36. Voice spirit, would you show us,

  37. the beauty of salvation? Would you show us

  38. the kindness of the father

  39. the greatness of our our our king, Lord,

  40. III pray that you help us wade through

  41. the mid section of this book with many

  42. stories and many things that come, draw our

  43. hearts to you. To see the beauty of

  44. what you have done, help us not to

  45. get lost over the summer months, but increase

  46. our worship and our gratitude and our awe.

  47. We pray that in your name, God. Amen.

  48. So at the beginning of Luke, I I've

  49. been trying to state this quite often Luke

  50. lays,

  51. his cards before us. Meaning, he shows us.

  52. He tips his hand on what he's trying

  53. to do.

  54. He's writing this book. He says so that

  55. we may believe.

  56. So that our faith may strengthened he says

  57. so that we may have certainty in what

  58. we're putting our faith into.

  59. And I think that that direction that he

  60. gives us requires us to do maybe the

  61. heavy mental and spiritual lifting to ask. Okay.

  62. But what does that mean though?

  63. But what does it mean for for us

  64. to believe and have certainty,

  65. what is Luke trying to get is that

  66. an ether goal or does he actually mean

  67. something that that when when he's saying he

  68. wants our our our our faith to be

  69. strengthened enough to believe in there. In that

  70. question,

  71. valuable as it is seems to maybe just

  72. birth more questions.

  73. And that leads us to maybe ask what

  74. does the unfolding work of Christ do in

  75. the life of a person that he is

  76. saved?

  77. Another way to put it is, what a

  78. salvation meant to do?

  79. What is the nitty gritty? What is it

  80. supposed to do? Does it polish off

  81. a couple of rough edges in our life

  82. that that aren't so,

  83. Christian or godly.

  84. Does it clean up the mouth of the

  85. loose lip person. Does it reform a couple

  86. of bad habits? Does it curve some pro

  87. of of yours in in mind that are

  88. maybe unfavorable or

  89. does it in light of maybe the book

  90. of ephesians, take what is dead and bring

  91. it into new life?

  92. Does it make a brand new creation a

  93. different person even. The person before isn't even

  94. alive

  95. anymore. They have a a new name, a

  96. new inheritance, a hope, a mind, a way

  97. of life that's

  98. completely brand new and it didn't exist before.

  99. What what is it?

  100. And this is a difficult part of Christianity

  101. to maybe describe or or convey or wrestle

  102. with at the work of Christ is not

  103. only

  104. in the realm of external behavior

  105. modification instead.

  106. The work of Christ changes a person from

  107. the inside,

  108. and then that work flows out and changes

  109. everything about their life. A change brought through

  110. the grace of God and his kindness through

  111. Jesus and by the holy spirit giving us

  112. faith, there rewire the soul. Do we believe

  113. that.

  114. Gives us a new mind and therefore our

  115. bodies actually live differently because of this comprehensive

  116. work that God has done. And what what

  117. we need to understand is, yes. Yes. Salvation

  118. affect and changes our external behaviors, but it

  119. does way more than just change a couple

  120. things that you do in your life? Are

  121. you with me still?

  122. Okay.

  123. That's why Jesus described it this way, I've

  124. come to seek and save the loss. And

  125. not I've come to adjust a couple of

  126. things that aren't the greatest.

  127. Come for those who are sick in need

  128. and shattered. I I came to do what

  129. man and woman can do on their own.

  130. In chapter 15 of Luke actually tells 3

  131. stories to further this case about a a

  132. lost sheep

  133. and a lost coin

  134. and a lost son. To to point out,

  135. I've come to rescue what was lost without

  136. me.

  137. I've come to say what could not be

  138. saved without me. I I didn't come to

  139. just make nice people

  140. or better citizens,

  141. or a couple small tweaks to the way

  142. that you live to enhance some things, the

  143. work of Christ is a miracle.

  144. It's thorough. It's complete. It's eternal. It's profound.

  145. It's not basic, and it's not simple. It's

  146. beautiful and sometimes we get low to sleep

  147. where we can't see that.

  148. We keep going back to this point because

  149. we're in this mid section of the the

  150. gospel of of Luke. And in this section,

  151. we get several parable stories.

  152. And and we get miracles and other events

  153. that that come at us pretty quickly,

  154. but there helped to lay a foundation

  155. for us about a a teaching of what

  156. a fuller view of,

  157. of salvation and its magnitude looks like. In

  158. other words, these parable stories and miracles aren't

  159. just kinda neat wisdom and they're not just

  160. fun details. Like, 0II think you should know

  161. this too. Their puzzle pieces to show us

  162. the beauty of God's work through Jesus to

  163. bring salvation to what was broken. I'm gonna

  164. paint a picture 1 after another after another

  165. and each is maybe showing us an angle

  166. at the beauty of God's work that we

  167. need to be behold.

  168. Remember with me, if if if if that

  169. is true,

  170. but remember the pieces that have come as

  171. of late in,

  172. the the gospel of of luke. We'll start

  173. back with with with a woman who anointed

  174. the the feet of Jesus. So was a

  175. beautiful story of what full repentance looks like.

  176. Right? We've seen stories of faith, the Roman

  177. soldier who believe Jesus didn't even have to

  178. come to his house to heal somebody that's

  179. incredible faith. This is the first picture of

  180. incredible

  181. repentance.

  182. Of a change of of a life, a

  183. change of ways. This woman who once used

  184. her body for sinful monetary gain. She was

  185. a prostitute.

  186. All of a sudden has found out that

  187. Jesus is the greatest treasure in all the

  188. world. And now she models repentance by using

  189. her body to worship instead of do what

  190. she did before.

  191. This is a change. This is profound. This

  192. is different, And she didn't just change her

  193. mind. A lot of people try and sell

  194. repentance is a change of mind that maybe

  195. doesn't affect your behavior. That's not that's not

  196. repentance at all.

  197. Jesus changed her heart. He cleansed her sin

  198. and her shame and her guilt and and

  199. her former desires, all in 1 fail swoop,

  200. and now this beautiful...

  201. Gift of Grace changed her whole life.

  202. It's a picture of the fullness of salvation

  203. as a miracle and a big change.

  204. It changes motives and identities and pursuits and

  205. worship and behavior change everything.

  206. About this woman. Then at the beginning of

  207. chapter 8, Luke begins talking more about several

  208. other women, Mary Mag is 1 of these

  209. who was demon possessed a terrifying love.

  210. Lost in sin.

  211. Her life looks like it's crushed, lost,

  212. destroyed,

  213. unfavorable

  214. too far gone. She is now because of

  215. the work of Jesus,

  216. accompanying Jesus

  217. for his mission with his disciples, her in

  218. a handful

  219. of other woman at as Luke puts it

  220. are now providing out of their own means

  221. so that the ministry of Christ can move

  222. forward. What does that mean? It doesn't mean

  223. that they're just tagging along and helping out

  224. with a couple side things and it's insignificant.

  225. Luke is making a big deal to women

  226. are providing out of what they have and

  227. it's actually making big difference for the ministry

  228. of God to move forward.

  229. Another 1 of the ladies Joanna was a

  230. wife of of Heritage household manager. She was

  231. a lady who was best known for what

  232. her husband did. That's what she was known

  233. for. And now she was being giving a,

  234. a calling as a woman is helping the

  235. ministry of Jesus move forward. She went from

  236. being just associated with evil. What, what do

  237. you think about, Joanna? I don't know. Just

  238. like some weird situations of who they work

  239. for where they get their money. And now

  240. she's a valuable,

  241. generous aid to the ministry of Jesus.

  242. This is a large scale transformation. All the

  243. 3 of these ladies faith didn't have just

  244. a minor tweak. It wasn't just a couple

  245. things that weren't so good about your life.

  246. Gotta change them completely and now following King

  247. Jesus,

  248. changed everything about how they live to gave

  249. him a new identity, a new purpose, a

  250. new way of life.

  251. Luke then shifts into the parable of the

  252. soils

  253. and the parable the lamps stand. That's the

  254. text that we hit last week. Where Jesus

  255. presented to all who would hear that the

  256. word of God was always working it never

  257. yields no effect.

  258. Sitting in that is quite heavy. That means

  259. when we preach the word and hear the

  260. word and read the word, it is always

  261. doing something, whether you're busy or distract it.

  262. No no matter what the case every time

  263. we hear the word of God, it does

  264. something at either harden your heart

  265. or it produces fruit.

  266. Always.

  267. There's a massive harvest in some

  268. in a rejection in others. When the word

  269. get... Of God gets planted in good soil,

  270. and it saves a person, it gets penetrated

  271. into their core, and then it comes out

  272. of their life, like a crop comes out

  273. of the soil. Again, showing salvation does something

  274. huge.

  275. It changes

  276. them. It changes the people

  277. so much so than in the lamps stand

  278. that it can't be hidden. The light of

  279. God, like

  280. a lamp shines from that life and it's

  281. visible and you cannot cover it or hide

  282. it even if you try.

  283. All of this is to show,

  284. Again, that god's work and the heart does

  285. something. It produces fruit.

  286. It produces light.

  287. It shines. It cannot be contained

  288. and now we find ourselves.

  289. It just 6 verses 2 smaller stories, 1

  290. feels

  291. awkward and out of place,

  292. and the other is a miracle, yet both

  293. of them and up pushing

  294. forward to show us the fullness of salvation

  295. what it does in a life.

  296. Now we're leaning hard into this theme of

  297. a fuller picture of salvation so that we

  298. may grow in our all of the work

  299. of God that he does through Jesus.

  300. But also so that we could hold to

  301. these texts

  302. well.

  303. But talk to some of the other elders

  304. and some other friends about this text and

  305. just the interesting of of preaching it often

  306. these stories in these miracles in these parable

  307. in this mid section

  308. of Luke. They get taught in a way

  309. that misses the bigger picture of salvation and

  310. so that the teacher ends up back in

  311. a corner where all they can convey is

  312. a do better try harder story to you

  313. or something that is neat, but not relevant

  314. to you at all.

  315. Both of those scenarios are complete misses

  316. on what we're supposed to have. Yes, The

  317. text may press on some areas that we

  318. need to to to be challenged in the

  319. way that we live. But first and foremost,

  320. all of these stories are meant to highlight

  321. the progressive, comprehensive beautiful work of salvation from

  322. Jesus. It's a miracle. Yeah. I may change

  323. some of your behaviors.

  324. The first your you're you're meant to see

  325. the the beauty of salvation, not just... Hey,

  326. we weed your garden and make sure you

  327. don't have any thorn from the good soil.

  328. That's not what's meant there.

  329. As we open the verses from today,

  330. This is just the the first couple verses.

  331. Jesus mother and brother come looking for him.

  332. Remember, there's a whole lot of crowd Right?

  333. There's there's probably thousands of of people all

  334. around. There's a whole lot happening. I imagine

  335. that Jesus day is is is crazy, busy.

  336. He's having conversations.

  337. He's praying. He's teaching. He's healing. He's fielding

  338. questions. He's kinda battling out with affairs sees

  339. over what faith really does. That the days

  340. must have been chaotic

  341. and quite long, tons of people. They all

  342. want something from him and they're all gathered

  343. then they're all

  344. around.

  345. In the middle of all the commotion as

  346. family shows up,

  347. but they couldn't get to them because there's

  348. too many people in the way. Again, there's

  349. a great crowd. They came to see, but

  350. yet there's a great crowd.

  351. So they have someone pass the word along.

  352. Right? That that they are there and that

  353. they're wanting to speak to him or pull

  354. him to to the side, who knows exactly

  355. what they wanted maybe mom was doing mom's

  356. stuff.

  357. I just wanna to check if you're eating.

  358. I I wanna make sure that you're getting

  359. some sleep. I I wanna to make sure

  360. that you weren't over extending yourself, who who

  361. knows exactly, but Mama is trying to get

  362. to him.

  363. And we get this feeling,

  364. that even though they couldn't get to them

  365. because of the crowd, the the the mom

  366. in in in the brother, they begin to

  367. pull the family card if you will.

  368. Say, hey, we're his family, so go get

  369. him for us.

  370. Right?

  371. I know lots of people are around. I

  372. know I know there's lots of meetings and

  373. a lot of stuff and a lot of

  374. things that he needs to do, but we're

  375. not just anyone we are his family.

  376. We're his kin. We are related to the

  377. king, And this is a type of claiming

  378. of privilege.

  379. We get special act I I know a

  380. lot of people need him, and I know

  381. you say he's busy, but we're, like, we

  382. get special access.

  383. To him. Because of our closer

  384. relationships. So just go past the word, Go

  385. go get him tell him mom and is

  386. to talk to him, and, I'm not just

  387. anybody.

  388. It's likely you're... They're using the blood is

  389. thicker than water outage here.

  390. I think you get the idea of family

  391. tie.

  392. Is generally looked at a stronger than just

  393. some general connection and they're pressing on that.

  394. And Jesus family is is leveraging this idea

  395. so they can get close to Jesus so

  396. they get a a priority

  397. with him.

  398. So this gets to Jesus. Hey, your your

  399. family is here, and and, like, they couldn't

  400. get to you and their press, and they're

  401. like, hey, like, with a family, we we

  402. we we we... You better come

  403. and it gives a troubling to some response.

  404. My mother and brother are those who hear

  405. the words of God,

  406. and they do it.

  407. It's assumed my many that Jesus is laying

  408. out this heavy

  409. rebuke honest his family here that he maybe

  410. wasn't happy with their actions? Or they weren't

  411. following the will of God.

  412. And so he gives a very public,

  413. heavy, hard here,

  414. kinda put them on blast statement back dropping

  415. the hammer cha them for it.

  416. While we do know in the gospel of

  417. Mark that his brothers some point thought he

  418. was crazy and tried to get him to

  419. stop doing ministry. We don't actually hear that

  420. that is what's going on at this point.

  421. Jesus family.

  422. Shows up,

  423. tries to get to Jesus.

  424. They can't,

  425. and there's an under undertone of priority. Yeah,

  426. yeah, but we're his family.

  427. To which Jesus says my family are the

  428. ones who hear the word of god and

  429. do it.

  430. We we rush to maybe look at it

  431. from 1 way as if

  432. he he was slamming his... His given family,

  433. his mother and his brothers. And and maybe

  434. he was re

  435. them.

  436. Over something that we cannot see,

  437. but what it seems like Luke is highlighting

  438. is not necessarily a slam on mom and

  439. the brothers is, but an eye opening statement

  440. about those who hear the word of God

  441. and their found relationship to God.

  442. See those who hear the word of God

  443. and obey it,

  444. thereby definition of the earlier parable good soil.

  445. Jesus told us good soil isn't just a

  446. person who produces for me,

  447. Good soil is the 1 who hears the

  448. word of God and does it and they're

  449. my very own family.

  450. They aren't just followers

  451. They're not just tenders.

  452. They're not just my buddies. They are my

  453. family.

  454. Hear it from this angle. A person rushes

  455. up to Jesus and says, your mom needs

  456. you. You need to stop what you're doing,

  457. pay attention to to to her, stop focusing

  458. on all the other people, and you need

  459. to focus on her, because she's your family

  460. and Jesus says, don't you get it? People

  461. who who've god who... The people who hear

  462. the word of God and, my family as

  463. well.

  464. They're not just moral people. They're my brothers

  465. and sisters. They are my family. They have

  466. that type of access, that type of relationship,

  467. that type of privilege. We are united and

  468. the very family of God.

  469. I know you're claiming they get this privilege,

  470. but

  471. What you see these people are now do

  472. as well?

  473. For ages, we've been misinformed

  474. on the way that we view God in

  475. relation to

  476. the family of God.

  477. There... There's a general sense that since God

  478. is the creator of all,

  479. that everything comes from him that that he

  480. is the the father of all creation in

  481. that way. And people take that idea of

  482. the the the father is in the origin

  483. of all creation, and they use it to

  484. say that every man will be child, they're

  485. all the children of God. They're all his

  486. family.

  487. If the bible says that's not true at

  488. all.

  489. The the Bible reserves the title of the

  490. family of God for the people who are

  491. actually his,

  492. not everyone

  493. his.

  494. We we get this crossed up as well

  495. likely through the idea of the Ama ama

  496. day. Yes, every man woman and child is

  497. made in the image of God.

  498. All were meant to reflect him. Each and

  499. every 1 of us because we are made

  500. in the image of God, that's why we

  501. have value and dignity and worth. But just

  502. because Someone is made in the image of

  503. God doesn't mean that they're part of the

  504. family of God. Those are different things.

  505. Jesus laid out to a group of people

  506. who were surely Jew and Gentile.

  507. Keep in mind, gentile would have no access

  508. they would think. No ability to be a

  509. car part of the family of God. In

  510. this type of always outsiders,

  511. and they hear that the ones who obey

  512. the go, the word of God are now

  513. adopted into the actual family of God. Yeah.

  514. Yeah. Yeah. So so so your family name

  515. is so and so, but you're actually in

  516. the family of God. Now.

  517. This is a really big deal, those who

  518. hear

  519. and obey the word of God,

  520. our family

  521. to the most high God,

  522. Again, salvation is either a big deal or

  523. it's nonsense,

  524. where there are once people who are slave

  525. to sin

  526. Now they're called sons and daughters of God.

  527. The family of Jesus is adopted in their

  528. given an inheritance.

  529. A promise

  530. love that'll will never be let go of.

  531. Again, how big is the deal of salvation?

  532. What exactly does it do? It brings a

  533. person into the very family of God.

  534. We need our all brought back to that.

  535. There's a natural pivot here

  536. into the next story or miracle where Jesus

  537. calms the raging storm

  538. in an instant.

  539. 1 day, it says we don't know how

  540. much time, but Luke is trying to say,

  541. hey it's a little bit later.

  542. Jesus in his disciples. Got into a boat

  543. and he said them, hey, we need to

  544. go to the other sock.

  545. I have a plan. We need to get

  546. over there. I I need you to get

  547. in, and we're gonna go

  548. sailing is much quicker than walking. So so

  549. hop in the boat and and let's go,

  550. and they set off Jesus plan, get in

  551. the boat going across,

  552. Let's go.

  553. The lake mentioned in this is actually what

  554. they call the sea of galilee.

  555. So about 12 miles in length in about

  556. 6 miles

  557. wide. So

  558. it's not as big as the ocean, but

  559. but it's bigger in the the, wider in

  560. the lake the Oz.

  561. And this lake sits as the second lowest

  562. lake in all the world's 700 feet

  563. below sea level.

  564. This low altitude of this lake paired with

  565. there's these mountain ranges kind of around it,

  566. and it flows into the center, make it

  567. the perfect place for really, really massive and

  568. dangerous storms to pop up. It goes a

  569. little bit like this. Cold air comes off

  570. of the mountain

  571. flows down into the valley and hits the

  572. warm water of this super low lake,

  573. and they're all of a sudden, massive scary

  574. storm comes really

  575. really quickly.

  576. It's not that it always would happen, but

  577. where it sits geographically is the perfect,

  578. space for a nasty storm to be able

  579. to be produced.

  580. Appears on that day when Jesus went to

  581. cross the water, this type of storm

  582. is what blew up there.

  583. The context is important here. Right?

  584. In this boat

  585. isn't some wimp boys who have never been

  586. on the water before.

  587. These are fishermen. By by trade, many of

  588. them our fishermen. They grew up on this

  589. lake. They they they knew it like the

  590. back of their hand. They probably fished it

  591. hundreds of times. They probably made the journey

  592. from 1 side to the other who knows

  593. how many times.

  594. This was a routine endeavor for them.

  595. Not an odd deal. The... This is not

  596. guys you're like, man. I don't know if

  597. I can swim them scared of the water.

  598. This This regular stuff for them.

  599. So it likely didn't make the disciples think

  600. twice when Jesus says get in, we gotta

  601. go to the other side.

  602. And it also didn't make him think twice

  603. when Jesus says I am on taken app

  604. real quick.

  605. It's showing us, Luca showing us a little

  606. glimpse of the humanity of Jesus.

  607. You've been administering the crowds for who knows

  608. how long.

  609. Finally, just gets a moment.

  610. Just a little shot.

  611. For a moment, then we'll get to the

  612. other side, and we'll keep going.

  613. While, he's asleep

  614. says the winds storm came up and was

  615. upon them.

  616. How bad was it? Well it's bad enough

  617. that the the the boat is being filled

  618. with water at a level that they're thinking

  619. this thing's going down,

  620. we're all gonna die.

  621. You have to imagine a calm body of

  622. water is now our rage filled body of

  623. water. The the waves grew

  624. in size.

  625. The the the front and but the bow

  626. of the boat is is is going up

  627. and down crashing so hard that water is

  628. coming over, what seam maybe

  629. It's some storm clouds. That's interesting. A little

  630. worrisome at first is now terrifying the disciples.

  631. The men used to sailing.

  632. The men used to being a water, used

  633. to boating

  634. are now grip with fear. They thought that

  635. they're gonna die.

  636. Things went bad suddenly

  637. and unexpectedly.

  638. We need to see that that's a perfect

  639. scenario for our faith really to get messed

  640. with.

  641. Really quick,

  642. and I did not see it

  643. fear.

  644. And they begin to lose it. They're coming

  645. undone with fear, so they wake up Jesus

  646. in the grips of their tear,

  647. and they yell this out. Master master we

  648. are dying.

  649. Hear the words there.

  650. Jesus is sleeping,

  651. I need to wake you and tell you

  652. we're all gonna die.

  653. They didn't say master save us? They didn't

  654. say hey, man. I I've...

  655. I I've seen you do some neat things.

  656. Can you can you try and fix the

  657. storm. They didn't say master deliver us,

  658. good father. You're you're trying to go to

  659. the other side, save us,

  660. the fear of the situation short circuit

  661. their faith in Jesus to the point that

  662. they were certain they were gonna die, and

  663. it's all they could see.

  664. Jesus wake up, we're all gonna die. Look

  665. what you've done.

  666. 1 theologian said it well, when he wrote,

  667. the boat wasn't the only thing getting swamped

  668. and overwhelmed that day. So was their faith?

  669. All of a sudden it was syncing. It

  670. was undone. It was coming apart.

  671. For them, it was...

  672. Fear had came

  673. of death.

  674. In the situation though we're not on a

  675. boat in the middle of a crazy storm

  676. is probably more

  677. relatable than than what we would think. See,

  678. our faith personally can be a really strong

  679. until 1 day we hit a fear that

  680. is quick and unexpected in the 1 that

  681. terri us for them it was literally drowning

  682. It was losing their life, but for us

  683. it could be something else.

  684. Losing a family member or a relationship or

  685. a job or a financial crisis that comes

  686. you your way or an a common

  687. economy that you don't feel stable. And who

  688. knows what it is, It it could be

  689. many things, but it likely isn't hard to

  690. imagine

  691. something coming at you with the quick that

  692. you didn't see

  693. and it affects your faith.

  694. There may be something that if it hits

  695. us,

  696. a certain fear.

  697. And I have a hard time believing as

  698. well.

  699. And we start yelling, Jesus. Don't you care

  700. we're dying?

  701. Let you get up and fix this.

  702. Jesus woke up, these are very short versus.

  703. This says he rebuked the wind and the

  704. waves,

  705. which means he yells out something to the

  706. effect, peace be still.

  707. Imagine having that card in your back pocket?

  708. Be still.

  709. I would use that for humidity. Go away.

  710. Any day all day. Hoodie do weather forever.

  711. Not in the notes. I'm sorry.

  712. Let yourself see the situation.

  713. They're on a boat,

  714. The clouds come in, all of a sudden,

  715. darkness from the clouds, howling winds. The the

  716. the rain is unleashing. The boat is slamming

  717. down the waters coming over, it's loud. It's

  718. chaotic. It's terrifying

  719. until it wasn't anymore.

  720. In an instant, the wind and the waves

  721. stopped

  722. and they were calm. It's not like it

  723. just chilled out enough that they could get

  724. to the shore.

  725. Call.

  726. They went from aging to lay low the

  727. The storm went from loud to silent from

  728. chaotic to to calm at the command of

  729. Jesus in an instant. This had to be

  730. amazing to be behold.

  731. Notice though Jesus response to his disciples with

  732. a secondary

  733. rebuke.

  734. Yes, he started with a rebuke to the

  735. wind in the waves,

  736. But he followed it with the the rebuke

  737. to those closest him, and he said to

  738. them

  739. where is

  740. your faith?

  741. These words are deep and heavy.

  742. It's as if Jesus looks at And goes.

  743. What was that, guys?

  744. How did you go from full of faith?

  745. To empty of faith that fast?

  746. How come your faith you hear this? How

  747. come your faith didn't apply to that fear

  748. at all?

  749. It didn't even come under view. It wasn't

  750. even like a a 10 percent part of

  751. a way to see it.

  752. Where's your faith in that situation?

  753. Kit hughes said it this way? The irony

  754. of the situation is the storm did not

  755. wake Jesus, but the un unbelievable of his

  756. disciples sure did.

  757. We need to press a little bit at

  758. what bothered Jesus,

  759. by that moment of fear. Because, again, I

  760. think a lot of people preach this in

  761. just a weird way as if to follow

  762. Jesus means nothing scares you, and that is

  763. not at all the point.

  764. It wasn't that the disciples had fear in

  765. general or got scared in some way.

  766. It was that they didn't even take into

  767. consideration that he was with them.

  768. Do you hear that? It didn't even come

  769. into their mind.

  770. They'd seen his miracles,

  771. and him heal and newest power and his

  772. faithfulness and his goodness, and they already knew

  773. it was his plan to get to the

  774. other side.

  775. And yet something happened quickly and unexpectedly

  776. to where they forgot all about it.

  777. To the point of even thinking Jesus didn't

  778. care about them.

  779. And then look at his kindness,

  780. Notice Jesus doesn't say,

  781. forget you. Right? You're un idiots.

  782. I'm done with you.

  783. He doesn't say because you didn't believe in

  784. me. I don't believe you in in in

  785. you anymore. Get away from me.

  786. He just said to them calmly me. Where

  787. is your faith?

  788. As if your face should have filtered into

  789. this? Where where is it at? Where did

  790. it go?

  791. Me being with you should have played into

  792. how you saw this unfold at least to

  793. some degree.

  794. Yes, This is a heavy statement, and it

  795. cuts deep because if any of us are

  796. emotionally honest to go,

  797. man there's times in my face has gone

  798. away real world real fast too.

  799. Yes. It's hard to hear, but this is

  800. also an invitation from him on what will

  801. come later. I believe Jesus is saying Lisa

  802. says, where is your faith? Next time when

  803. you remember him with you.

  804. Even light of Matthew 28 with some of

  805. the last stuff you wanna say to us,

  806. I have all power and authority from our

  807. father.

  808. I will never leave your for sake. Remember

  809. who I am and all things bad stuffs

  810. coming. And I'm not gonna make it All

  811. I'll go away, but I'm with you.

  812. We stand back

  813. and look at the miracle

  814. as a whole.

  815. Men and women have done some cool stuff.

  816. Right?

  817. Back in their,

  818. time and roman and culture, like the Aqua

  819. ducks, that's a big deal.

  820. I mean, the wonders of the world, some

  821. of the things that we have done.

  822. We've conquered. We've achieved feat of greatness.

  823. We've built really cool things.

  824. But who else can tell the wind to

  825. stop and it does?

  826. Who else can tell the raging waters to

  827. sit down and and they do.

  828. The disciples were amazed at this at a

  829. deep level. Remember, they've seen a lot of

  830. cool stuff, but

  831. who is it that

  832. controls nature?

  833. So they ask who is this?

  834. Who can command the winds and the water

  835. and have them

  836. obey him like that and then the text

  837. just ends.

  838. Many believe Luke ends us text this way

  839. with the question of who is this.

  840. He's actually laying the question on our feet

  841. as well.

  842. We all have to decide who is Jesus

  843. of Nazareth.

  844. So 1 of the biggest questions

  845. anyone will ever face in life what will

  846. you make of him?

  847. If he really did command the winds in

  848. the waves,

  849. if he really did heal and forgive sins

  850. and die and raise

  851. again,

  852. And he's worthy of our devotion and our

  853. worship and our submission.

  854. He is a emmanuel, God with us.

  855. He is God inca. The God who put

  856. on flesh to come and seek the and

  857. save and lost,

  858. pay the penalty that they should have paid

  859. and offer them a righteousness that they should

  860. never get.

  861. The disciples again had to decide who is

  862. this Jesus tu.

  863. And it ends that way because so do

  864. we thousands of years later,

  865. I'm I'm trying to be careful of not

  866. giving a million points of application, but there

  867. is just a fresh need who is eat

  868. to you.

  869. What does this power mean to? It's either

  870. relevant or it's not he's either king or

  871. he's not, What does it mean?

  872. Remember, I said that these verses before transitioned

  873. will

  874. into this text.

  875. If those who hear the word of God

  876. and Obey our Jesus family. Right? That's what

  877. we heard in the first part.

  878. You're not just a follower,

  879. your family.

  880. And if you or those who listen and

  881. obey,

  882. you or Jesus family as well.

  883. Again, that is not the gift that all

  884. are given. It's given to those hear the

  885. word of God and obeyed. If that is

  886. you, Luke reminding you,

  887. hey remember when things go nuts that your

  888. family align has in its our and all

  889. the calming of the winds,

  890. the stopping of aging storms and the smashing

  891. down of waves,

  892. and

  893. just keep that in mind.

  894. How does that apply to anything or what

  895. difference does it make? I I've I've told

  896. a version of these stories,

  897. multiple times over

  898. the years. But there was a, a couple

  899. years when I was pretty young that we

  900. lived in Saint. Louis in type of a

  901. a rough neighborhood. And

  902. in this rough neighborhood, I would get chased

  903. home,

  904. by older, bigger kids pretty often.

  905. Often me and 2 2 of my best

  906. friends, we would get chase together.

  907. And,

  908. It was not awesome. It wasn't awesome. It

  909. was was pretty awful. I was never the

  910. fastest runner. So, hopefully, my bike was there.

  911. I a pedal pretty good. And so I

  912. get on that thing in pedal for all

  913. I could to to 1 of their house.

  914. My buddy's zach house or my house, whoever

  915. house was closest and we tried to rush

  916. into the garage and shut the door and

  917. On 1 day, this Chase sequence happened, but

  918. I was by myself.

  919. None of them were with me. I was

  920. alone.

  921. That I was terrified.

  922. Right? So I I hu that bike as

  923. fast as a husky boy could.

  924. And I remember coming down road, and there's

  925. a a right hand turn, and my house

  926. was was 3 houses down. And I I

  927. remember hitting as fast as I could and

  928. making the right curve,

  929. And as I turned right, I saw my

  930. dad in the lawn

  931. is doing long work and immediately,

  932. my terror was pressed back,

  933. and I was relieved, why

  934. daddy will whoop those fools.

  935. Right. So III got to the edge of

  936. my yard,

  937. biking at full speed.

  938. I may have been going a little so

  939. I don't know but it fell fast.

  940. And I jumped off the bike

  941. in in a radical change

  942. events,

  943. I went from terrified and upset to yelling.

  944. My dad is going kick your butt.

  945. I don't know what I said exactly, but

  946. is

  947. something with a lot of Bra.

  948. My fear was gone.

  949. So much so that I started talking mess

  950. to him.

  951. Again, what what's the point? The realization that

  952. my big bad dad was there changed the

  953. way I interacted with the situation?

  954. Part of what Luke is likely telling us

  955. is something a little bit similar to this.

  956. Look at your family.

  957. Look at your dad, look at your savior.

  958. Yes. Storms are coming.

  959. Because your dad is who he is, doesn't

  960. mean everything battle go away. They're coming. And

  961. they're not gonna be fun, and you're not

  962. gonna get all of them, but

  963. the faith doesn't mean

  964. You better not ever ever be scared.

  965. But a call to faith. Hey Where's your

  966. faith? There's a call to remember

  967. who your family is when the wheels come

  968. off, the waves get big and you get

  969. really scared.

  970. Does your faith

  971. who your father is, your eternal in inheritance?

  972. The power of king Jesus. Does it interplay

  973. with your deepest fears or not?

  974. Where's your faith?

  975. Salvation gives you a new family, 1 that

  976. is eternal.

  977. Salvation gives us the ability to trust your

  978. heavenly father

  979. more.

  980. If By I no means it's just a

  981. modification of a couple little

  982. behavior tweaks that you and I needed. It

  983. changes everything. I think Luke is just pressing

  984. hard. Do you believe that.

  985. The salvation beautiful in a gift is just

  986. kinda me?

  987. This seems to be what Luke is pushing

  988. hard for us to see. Salvation gives you

  989. a new family.

  990. What does that mean?

  991. If you think back in your with us,

  992. you have a new privilege and access to

  993. god that you never had before.

  994. You aren't just another body. You aren't just

  995. another face, you're part of God's family.

  996. You aren't just a person trying to be

  997. good, You're part of the very family of

  998. God.

  999. And there are blessings

1000. bestowed on you through your new family. That

1001. you will reap the of benefits for all

  1002. of eternity.

1003. It's an invitation to believe do you know

1004. who you are. Do you remember

1005. Oh your father, God and the savior king,

1006. keep in mind, all power and authority theirs.

1007. So why should you fear and not consider

  1008. their strength?

1009. Even when you feel powerless and scared and

1010. out of control this too is an invitation

1011. to believe hey your salvation is really big.

  1012. Oh, sorry that hurts.

1013. Sometimes remember the story of John the Baptist

1014. some things. Are gonna come at you and

1015. there be hard and difficult in your 1

1016. out and you're not gonna get out of

1017. it and still your faith plays into those

  1018. things.

  1019. Salvation has massive

1020. implications over and above just behavior,

1021. modification. All of this is through Jesus and

1022. his life and his death. And his resurrection

1023. and the promise of God over your life

1024. if you hear the word of God and

  1025. obey it.

1026. Again, I think the hope for us is

1027. those who have ears to hear,

1028. be careful how you hear and Lord give

1029. us the ability to believe.

1030. I've tried to be really careful with these

  1031. texts.

1032. They may have implications into your life and

  1033. how you live.

1034. But a lot of this is elevating the

1035. person of Jesus and the work of salvation.

1036. So I'm gonna be careful and and as

1037. we play and there's some time to pray.

1038. You may ask the lord, hey help revive

1039. my view of the beauty of salvation.

1040. Help awaken my soul to the reality of

1041. who you are and what you've done that

1042. I'm invited into the family of God. And

  1043. there's real power

1044. being in your family and trusting in you.

1045. III don't know what you need to do

1046. there, but I don't wanna be careful to

1047. not try and give you 18 behavior modification

1048. points if I said salvation is bigger than

  1049. behavior modification.

1050. Maybe we just ask the lord, would you

1051. give me more faith to believe that your

1052. salvation is big and live in light of

1053. the big of the gift of grace that

  1054. I've been given.

1055. Band you guys can come back up. We'll

  1056. take comm

1057. as we do each week.

  1058. And first, Corinthians 11:23

  1059. through 26.

1060. It says this for I received from the

1061. Lord what I also delivered to you.

1062. The lord jesus on the night when he

1063. is betrayed, he took Bread, and when he

1064. had given thanks. He broke. And he said

  1065. this is my body,

  1066. just for you.

1067. Do this in remembrance of me in the

1068. same way, in the same way, also, he

1069. took the cup after supper saying this cup

1070. is the new covenant in my blood.

1071. Do this as often as you drink it

1072. and remember it's of me for as often

1073. as you eat the bread and drink the

1074. cup, you claim the Lord's death until he

1075. comes. Each and every weak friends. We gather

  1076. around the word.

1077. We ask for the spirit to show the

1078. beauty of god and and

1079. salvation and a remind that is only the

1080. work of Jesus that gets us into any

1081. of that. So we come to the table

1082. again, going it's your body in your blood,

1083. The only thing that gets me into the

1084. family of god. It's the only thing that

1085. pays for my sins. It's the only thing

1086. that that that doesn't make my life only

1087. about what I can manufacture and do it

1088. is you and you alone and we take,

1089. again, and again, and again, each week to

1090. remind ourselves, so that our faith may strengthen.

1091. You And I pray that yours would,

1092. be today as we worship that we take.

1093. Again, we'll have some moments

1094. to just allow us to pray? I think

1095. maybe a wise thing to do is just

1096. ask the whole. Hey what what are you

1097. trying to show me through some of this.

1098. What are you trying to increase my vision

1099. in relation to to to to.

1100. What do you want to do and then

1101. come and take and gratitude asking that your

  1102. faith would be strengthened

1103. that god will be glorified.

1104. Would you stand in pray with me?
