  4. So we're in Luke chapter 9

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  5. versus 1 through

  6. 27

  7. this morning. So go ahead and we will

  8. read the word of the Lord.

  9. And he called the 12 and gave them

  10. power and authority over all demons to cure

  11. diseases.

  12. And he sent them out to reclaim the

  13. kingdom of god and to heal

  14. And he said to them take nothing for

  15. your journey, no staff, no bag, nor bread,

  16. nor money, and do not have 2 tu

  17. and whatever house you enter stay there

  18. and from there depart. And whenever they go,

  19. do not... And they do not receive you

  20. when you leave,

  21. that town shake off the dust from your

  22. feet as a testimony against them, and they

  23. departed and went through the villages preaching the

  24. gospel and healing

  25. everywhere.

  26. Now, Here, the Tetra heard about all that

  27. was happening and he was perplexed

  28. because it was said by some that John

  29. had been raised from the dead,

  30. by some that Elijah had appeared and by

  31. others that are that 1 of the prophets

  32. of old had arise, Harriet said John I

  33. beheaded,

  34. but who is this about whom I'm hearing

  35. such things and he sought to see him.

  36. Verse 10 on the return, the apostles told

  37. him all that they had done.

  38. And he had took them and withdrew

  39. part to a town called Ba sad.

  40. When the crowds learned it, they followed him

  41. and were welcoming

  42. any welcome them and spoke to them about

  43. the kingdom of God, and cured those who

  44. had need of healing. Now, the day began

  45. to wear away and the 12 came and

  46. said to him, send the crowd away

  47. to go into the surrounding villages in the

  48. countryside to find a lodging and get provisions

  49. for we are here in a desolate... In

  50. a desolate place.

  51. But he said to them, you give them

  52. something to eat.

  53. And they said we have no more than

  54. 5 loaves and 2 fishes unless

  55. we would go and buy food for all

  56. these people. For there about 5000 men, and

  57. he said to disciples, have them sit down

  58. in groups of about 50 each.

  59. And they did so, and he had them

  60. all sit down and taking the 5 loaves

  61. on the 2 fish. He looked up to

  62. heaven, and he set a blessing over them.

  63. Then he broke the lows and gave them

  64. to the disciples set before the crowd and

  65. the 8

  66. and were satisfied.

  67. And what was left over was picked up

  68. was about 12 baskets of broken pieces.

  69. Now it happened that is he was praying

  70. alone, the disciples were with him, and he

  71. asked them who do the crowds say that

  72. I am.

  73. And they answered him John the baptist, but

  74. at others say Elijah,

  75. And others that 1 of the prophets of

  76. old has risen, then he said to them,

  77. but who do you say that I am?

  78. And Peter answered

  79. the Christ of God.

  80. And he strictly charged and commanded them to

  81. tell this to no 1 saying the son

  82. of man must suffer many things

  83. and be rejected by the elders and the

  84. chief priests and scribes and be killed and

  85. on the third day raised.

  86. And he said to all, if anyone would

  87. come after me.

  88. Let him deny himself and take up his

  89. cross daily and follow me. Forever whoever would

  90. save his life will lose it, whoever loses

  91. his life for my sake will save it.

  92. For what does it profit a man if

  93. he gains the whole world and and forfeit

  94. fits or loses us himself.

  95. Forever is ashamed of me and of my

  96. words of him, will the son of man

  97. be ashamed when he comes in his glory

  98. and the glory of the father and of

  99. the holy angels. But I tell you truly,

  100. there are some standing here who will not

  101. taste death

  102. until they see the kingdom of God. This

  103. is the word of the Lord.

  104. Father ask that you drawn here to us

  105. through your word.

  106. Now, we hang on your promise that word

  107. doesn't return, void that you're always working that

  108. you're always moving that you're always speaking so

  109. come and speak to us.

  110. Give us open ears, let us hear, Lord

  111. today. H spirit come and shows the beauty

  112. of who jesus is and what he's done,

  113. may that become more real may at in

  114. our soul and unlock worship and gratitude, To

  115. mean that worship should be pleasing to you.

  116. We pray that in your name, God. Amen.

  117. So when I lived in

  118. Iowa in in Des moines for several years,

  119. I I made a bad decision 1 time.

  120. Like, I I probably made several bad decisions,

  121. but only share 1 for right now.

  122. I I agreed to train with a boxer

  123. named 7 Ramirez who went to our church.

  124. I I literally do not remember how this

  125. came to be. Like, I can't imagine that

  126. I would would've have asked him to hit

  127. me in the face or anything like that,

  128. but The scenario still happened. I found myself

  129. in a real boxing gym

  130. in a little bit of a sketchy side

  131. of town, standing in front of a man

  132. with possible pinned up anger issues.

  133. Who came from a boxing family, and he

  134. was gonna teach me a thing or 2

  135. about boxing.

  136. When I say serious boxing family, like all

  137. of the brothers in this family thought,

  138. and and 1 of his brothers was an

  139. actual professional boxer, like, not a Youtube boxer

  140. like now, like, he was... He fought for

  141. belts and and and Juan.

  142. And Stephen was no s. He

  143. likely stop competing because he had a family

  144. early.

  145. And so this was kind of his track

  146. record, and I was

  147. overweight with no workout regimen at all.

  148. So I was worried quite worried to to

  149. say I was fearful would have been an

  150. understatement. At the time, I I didn't know

  151. really what I was walking into? I didn't

  152. know did did he wanna teach me to

  153. box? Was he trying to help me get

  154. fit?

  155. Do you just wanna spend time

  156. with me? Or did he actually not like

  157. me at all and he wanted an Ali

  158. for beating the guitar out of me and

  159. not getting arrested for it. I

  160. I didn't know. But either way, I found

  161. myself in this boxing gym, and we had

  162. to start from square 1, like, a complete

  163. novice in this whole boxing arrangement. So what

  164. did it start with? Teaching me to to

  165. wrap my hands properly at least so I

  166. don't break my hands and teaching me how

  167. to stand and how to hit pads and

  168. how to do combinations and how to snap

  169. a jab and how to move your hips,

  170. and we had to start from a very

  171. early

  172. spot with all of this. And surely,

  173. slowly, but surely, we work past some of

  174. the just the the the basic things into

  175. hitting pads for about a minute at a

  176. time in rounds.

  177. If you've never tried that, like hitting a

  178. a pad over and over for a minute,

  179. wall out of shape,

  180. Like, I don't recommend it. It it's it's

  181. not fun. Who knew that moving in a

  182. circle trying to hit pads and combinations could

  183. make you wanna throw up so fast, but

  184. but it did.

  185. And then 1 day, it escalated even more.

  186. Stephen decided that we would spa.

  187. And I've I've learned how to wrap my

  188. hands. I've hit pads and almost throwing up,

  189. and now we're gonna try and hit each

  190. other in the face. Awesome.

  191. And I was terrified. He could have killed

  192. me and luckily, he he didn't... I'm grateful

  193. for that. My wife is grateful for that.

  194. My face, my nose is grateful.

  195. For that that he didn't take it

  196. out too hard on me, but quicken into

  197. spa, I found out AAA couple things just

  198. really, really fast.

  199. First, I do not like getting hit.

  200. It's not fun, like 0 out of 10,

  201. not recommended it at all.

  202. And the second thing that I learned really

  203. quick is I'm not good at not getting

  204. hit. Which is not a great combination.

  205. Right? If you if you're tracking, that's a

  206. problem getting hit stinks, and and when you're

  207. standing in front of a person who's boxed

  208. all their life, Like, I'm I'm getting hit

  209. a lot. And a big part of my

  210. problem, outside of the complete utter lack of

  211. skill or

  212. stamina, like, it's out of shape. A big

  213. part of my problem was what we'll call

  214. the defensive

  215. conundrum of boxing.

  216. Boxing, you're meant to keep your hands up

  217. and your head down so you don't get

  218. blasted in the face. Right? You're trying to

  219. not get knocked out. So you gotta keep

  220. your hands up at all

  221. times.

  222. So you don't get dusted in the head.

  223. But but if you keep your hands up

  224. all the time, what does that do? It

  225. leaves you wide open to get hit in

  226. the mid section.

  227. And as bad as getting hit in the

  228. faces. It's it's... Again, 0 out of 10,

  229. don't recommend it, getting hit in the stomach,

  230. when your gas being an out of air

  231. and trying not to throw up. It is

  232. is is it is pretty awful

  233. in its own. Right? It's back to the

  234. idea again of me not liking to get

  235. hit very much. So here was my problem.

  236. When I kick my my hands up, I

  237. I would just get belly blasted and immediately,

  238. then like, drop my hands and leave myself

  239. open to getting hit in the face. Right?

  240. I I couldn't just absorb the shot and

  241. keep moving. Apparently, that's what boxer do. They

  242. have stomach muscles. And you hit them in

  243. the stomach and they keep moving.

  244. But I'm not sure I have stomach muscles.

  245. I've never seen them.

  246. It's plausible and impossible that I have a

  247. genetic defect and they just don't exist.

  248. Anyway.

  249. I couldn't take a body shot back then

  250. I didn't have the core strength to do

  251. it. I probably still cancel. Don't try.

  252. But if you hit me in a stomach,

  253. I'm gonna drop my hands with the quick,

  254. like,

  255. and then I'm gonna get hit in the

  256. face, and it's gonna be over and not

  257. fun. So my my boxing career didn't last

  258. very long. III quit before

  259. too long and

  260. Though I wasn't a very good boxer or

  261. this kind of stomach to ahead, conundrum and

  262. paradigm is is 1 that you'll hear boxer

  263. talk about a lot or comment or coaches

  264. when they're training a box to say hey,

  265. go ahead and work the body over and

  266. over and over,

  267. and slowly, but steadily, it... It's gonna pay

  268. dividends for you if you do it. The

  269. the shots that you you hit someone in

  270. the stomach with. They're not really meant to

  271. knock them out. But the

  272. accumulation of them over time will open up

  273. something else bigger down the road. It'll set

  274. them up for for dropping their hands and

  275. having the the big shot to the to

  276. the head. Now this idea of a steady

  277. diet of 1 thing leading to something bigger.

  278. I bring that up because it's all like

  279. I think of. That's the imagery that was

  280. in my head all week when reading this

  281. text.

  282. Luke has been pepper in a specific idea

  283. over,

  284. in over and an over. In a way

  285. that you may or may not have paid

  286. much attention to. I've I've tried to kinda

  287. keep it ahead of us.

  288. Yet, he was kind of setting up for

  289. today what we'll call the the question, the

  290. the big shot.

  291. And the question that he has been setting

  292. up that he's been an in all along

  293. is just simply who is Jesus

  294. to you or who do you say that

  295. he is?

  296. That question is not what I call a

  297. Build d to bear Jesus question. It's not

  298. well, who's Jesus to you, And and what

  299. kind of personality and persona and look would

  300. would you create for a savior that you'd

  301. wanna worship to like the creation gets to

  302. mold the creator? It's more of a personal

  303. in nature question?

  304. Who who do you think Jesus is?

  305. And what does that mean to you? How

  306. does that change your life? How does that

  307. affect your life? Who is he to you

  308. And what does that do?

  309. If we step back and look at Luke

  310. from a... What I call a 30000 foot

  311. view. If you zoom out a it a

  312. little bit, and you look not just into

  313. the to all the nuts and bolts, but

  314. you look back at the themes of what's

  315. going on, you're gonna see the opening of

  316. Luke was an announcement that Jesus was coming.

  317. And then Mary, the mother of Jesus

  318. before he was ever born,

  319. declared in a section called the the mag

  320. hot that Jesus was

  321. the Lord.

  322. God the savior in the flesh, the 1

  323. in whom blessing would come

  324. to the children of god in a broken

  325. world.

  326. But since that declaration of Mary over who

  327. Jesus was, the rest of the book shows

  328. us this ongoing

  329. wrestle with people to answer that same question.

  330. She declared who Jesus is, but we see

  331. this ongoing wrestler where other people are trying

  332. to figure out who he is, and they're

  333. they're struggling a little bit. The answers are

  334. many. They're all over the board.

  335. Notice maybe in in Nazareth right after Jesus

  336. earthly ministry kicked off earlier in the book.

  337. Jesus goes to his hometown. He begins to

  338. to minister. The question is who is this

  339. Jesus? They would answer it with...

  340. He's just

  341. not much of anything at all. He's just

  342. the son of Joseph. Like, we know where

  343. that kid grew up. We... We've seen him

  344. grow up. He... He's a nobody.

  345. That's all we see him as.

  346. So in Jesus because they answered it that

  347. way, begin to speak authoritative

  348. to them.

  349. If you remember they tried to throw them

  350. off of a cliff for it.

  351. Then we shift a little bit later, Jesus

  352. Heals a para man in front of a

  353. group of ph,

  354. and he also tells the man that his

  355. sins are forgiven in that that dialogue to

  356. which the ph he said

  357. to the question who is Jesus well Jesus

  358. just a bla.

  359. Because only God can forgive sins and we

  360. don't think that you are God, so they

  361. rejected him, then a little bit later. Jesus

  362. heals a widow son and the crowd who

  363. saw it it said that which Jesus was

  364. surely a great prophet.

  365. That's all that he was to them. He

  366. wasn't the god man.

  367. Use just a cool man doing good things.

  368. You may or may not actually speak for.

  369. Got it. Or you follow in the ins

  370. and outs and the struggle.

  371. A little after that, the ph declared that

  372. Jesus was a glut and a drunk.

  373. All you like to do is is love

  374. and hang out with sinful people What what

  375. they're doing to the of who is Jesus,

  376. is they're implying, Well Jesus is just a

  377. morally compromised person.

  378. That's all he is. And then in a

  379. dinner party, people struggle with Who Jesus is

  380. and they ask the question themselves, Who is

  381. this?

  382. Who can do the things that he's claiming

  383. to do and then Jesus calms the the

  384. storm on the boat with the disciples, and

  385. they asked the same question. Who is this?

  386. The commands the the wind and the the

  387. waves and they listen to him?

  388. And after that a demon declared that Jesus

  389. is the most high God.

  390. And he begs Jesus not to torment him

  391. and throw him into the abyss.

  392. Are you kinda seeing the pepper, the the

  393. body shots that the constant press of 1

  394. question of who is Jesus. Luke is pressing

  395. this over and over?

  396. Who's Jesus to you? What does that mean

  397. to your life? What does that mean to

  398. the rest of humanity and all of that

  399. sets up Jesus just flat out asking the

  400. question?

  401. Who am I?

  402. Follow this. In the text today, we shift

  403. from Luke showing us how other people

  404. wrestled with the question of who is Jesus

  405. to now Jesus going yeah yeah. Okay.

  406. But what about you?

  407. I get that everyone trying to wrestle and

  408. figure it out, but But I don't wanna

  409. talk about them anymore. I wanna talk about

  410. you right here right now, Who do you

  411. say that I am. No more kind of

  412. beating around

  413. the Bush who You. It's time to decide.

  414. What is your answer?

  415. Now let's be clear though I've used the

  416. analogy of body shots and and head shots.

  417. Jesus isn't trying to knock you out.

  418. But he is trying to make sure that

  419. you can process this and you don't ignore

  420. it.

  421. As we dig through the large text for

  422. today, maybe it's easiest to see that there's

  423. 2 themes that gets bounced through a little

  424. bit. We'll call them the commission

  425. and the question.

  426. And versus 1 through 6 in the opening,

  427. and then we skip a little bit to

  428. 10 through 17,

  429. it deals with the commission

  430. while the rest versus 7 through 9

  431. in 18 through 27 deal with that question

  432. of who is

  433. Jesus.

  434. We see at the opening of the text

  435. Jesus calls the 12

  436. disciples,

  437. and he gives them power and authority over

  438. the demons and the ability to cure

  439. diseases. And then he sends them out. This

  440. is important.

  441. To pro claim the kingdom of God and

  442. to heal. This is the the commissioning of

  443. the apostles. Prior to that, the disciples it

  444. just followed Jesus around.

  445. They listen to him preach. They saw him

  446. navigate people and situations. They saw him perform

  447. miracles and won works, but they're just witnesses.

  448. They're sitting in the stands. They're their fans,

  449. just kinda watching what Jesus does, the action

  450. from the sidelines, but now Jesus is involving

  451. them into the work as the sent ones.

  452. Jesus at this point is is going, hey,

  453. I'm appointing you to this ministry to to

  454. join me.

  455. And noticed that he doesn't just appoint them.

  456. He equip them.

  457. He's been training them. He's been teaching them.

  458. He's been disc decipher and showing them what

  459. to to to do.

  460. But now he gives them the power and

  461. authority to do it on their own. They're

  462. going to be the apostles, the sent ones

  463. to do the work of the church in

  464. the early stages

  465. of the church through the new testament.

  466. So we see that Jesus gives them power

  467. and authority,

  468. but it's for a purpose.

  469. So that they can pro preclude the kingdom

  470. of God.

  471. This means he didn't send them out to

  472. reclaim the overthrow rome, and he didn't send

  473. them out to to pro claim that they

  474. were gonna bring Israel back to a world

  475. power stage. You didn't send them out to

  476. pro claim a gospel of of a autonomy

  477. or into that individuality or prosperity.

  478. He sent them out to reclaim the kingdom

  479. of god this is what I want you

  480. to do claim the kingdom of God.

  481. Now the concept of the kingdom of God

  482. may feel a little bit distant or hard

  483. to to pin down, but Jesus said if

  484. I came, and cast out demons by the

  485. finger of God,

  486. well then you know the kingdom of God

  487. has come to you.

  488. Jesus saying 1 way that you'll know the

  489. kingdom of God is here

  490. is you're gonna see the king's power at

  491. work. And you go, oh, okay. I I

  492. see it. And he later said that the

  493. kingdom of God isn't visible in the way

  494. that you speck, meaning the kingdom of God,

  495. you're not gonna have somebody go, oh, there

  496. it is. Oh, or or over here it

  497. is because the kingdom of God is actually

  498. within the people of God.

  499. What Jesus is framing up is this combination.

  500. The kingdom of God

  501. is the power of God.

  502. That comes to bear in places and spaces

  503. and people

  504. who are under the reign of God, the

  505. sovereignty of God. You you follow that. The

  506. the kingdom of god is where the power

  507. of God is is is revealed through the

  508. people of God under the reign and sovereignty

  509. of God.

  510. That's why the the kingdom of god is

  511. not a geographic location. You can't like map

  512. out the The outskirts of it like you

  513. would Boone County, the kingdom of God is

  514. where you see the power

  515. of god working.

  516. Most specifically when people

  517. have got reigning and ruling over their lives.

  518. To preach the kingdom of God to anyone

  519. is to declare that god reign over things.

  520. It's to declare God reign overall, and you

  521. could live inside of his power under reign

  522. in his freedom as his children with an

  523. inheritance forever and in his love.

  524. You can accept that and live in light

  525. of that or you can reject it and

  526. live outside of it.

  527. Now in their day, if we think about

  528. this, the the cross has not happened yet,

  529. we we we need to understand we... We

  530. we're given, like, all the notes ahead of

  531. time, and and they're on the early side.

  532. So the the cross hasn't happened. So they

  533. would have preach maybe AAAA tad differently than

  534. we would about the kingdom of God. We

  535. now preach the kingdom of God.

  536. By by preaching that King Jesus died on

  537. the cross.

  538. To adopt sinner and redeem them and reconcile

  539. them to god so that we can live

  540. in and walk in and participate in the

  541. kingdom of god if we believe

  542. in Jesus for the work of salvation for

  543. us,

  544. and then as Romans says we we confess

  545. him with our mouth and follow him with

  546. our life.

  547. If we do that, we get to walk

  548. in the kingdom of God, and that's the

  549. place where Jesus reign and rules over our

  550. lives and we're waiting for him to come

  551. finish what he started.

  552. So when Jesus commissions the 12 to go

  553. out and preach the kingdom of God.

  554. He tells them something interesting. He says, hey,

  555. take no staff or no money bag,

  556. No bread.

  557. Don't bring 2 2 next. What he's saying

  558. is don't over pack.

  559. But I don't over pac he means don't

  560. pack much at all. Just go.

  561. This is like the anti of when my

  562. family goes to Colorado.

  563. Right? Bike rack loaded to the to the

  564. gills. We have the the the the rooftop

  565. loaded to the gills.

  566. I can't hardly see out of the window

  567. because the back backseat loaded to the gills,

  568. like, he's saying don't do that.

  569. The reasons that he's saying this are are

  570. many, but I think a lot of them

  571. kind of boil down to the idea of

  572. dependence.

  573. Remember you're sending the 12 out and they

  574. have new power over demons

  575. into cure diseases

  576. and have mighty works happen.

  577. I don't I don't know about you. May

  578. may maybe maybe you have them more together

  579. than me, but

  580. For the 12, if you have this, like,

  581. newfound power,

  582. it'd be a little bit easy to start

  583. thinking that your pretty hot stuff.

  584. Did you see that miracle? Did you see

  585. that? Did you see what just... Did did

  586. you see that amazing thing? Did you see

  587. how the crowds were react It it would

  588. have been really easy for them? To get

  589. high on themselves. So Jesus tells them don't

  590. go out over prepared or what I'll call

  591. over insured so that you stay depending on

  592. me.

  593. I'm not trying to hurt you.

  594. But I'm gonna make sure that you don't

  595. boast yourself, and you're gonna need to connect

  596. to me in order to carry this out

  597. and move my faith.

  598. Further, many religious leaders the time, they were

  599. all basing what they did on on acquiring

  600. money and wealth and status and safety and

  601. Jesus says, you know what?

  602. I'm gonna have you take nothing to demonstrate

  603. what you're preaching is different.

  604. We're not seeking money. They didn't prioritize

  605. safety. They prioritize the message of the kingdom

  606. of God. This is what matters. God has

  607. come to do something.

  608. Among his people,

  609. Notice this Jesus also says and when you

  610. go when a person doesn't receive you.

  611. I mean, that I won't have anything to

  612. do with with your your message of the

  613. kingdom of god,

  614. says when you leave that town, shake off

  615. the dust from your feet as a testimony

  616. against them and just walk away.

  617. The point was there's an urgency to go

  618. preach.

  619. But there's also an urgency to preach to

  620. those who will listen.

  621. Jesus is beginning to tell them, do not

  622. spend too much time, begging people to hear

  623. you.

  624. Begging people to believe worry that they won't

  625. accept you or your message or your ideas

  626. in front of them, preach to those who

  627. will hear and accept the truth.

  628. Now there's an interesting element here. He you

  629. can contend, and you can try and persuade,

  630. and you can give some some some discourse

  631. for for the desire to change people's mind

  632. about the kingdom of God, but Jesus saying

  633. don't beg them and don't linger too long

  634. if they're hard hearted.

  635. I find this powerful encouraging to my heart.

  636. I often believers have this sense. When when

  637. they said, okay. I'm gonna go do the

  638. thing. I'm gonna go gonna go share the

  639. gospel. I'm I'm gonna go share about Jesus,

  640. but they have the sense that when they're

  641. sharing the gospel that they're kind of begging

  642. and pleading and hoping, please please please where

  643. you accept what I'm saying to you.

  644. Please like our Jesus.

  645. Please

  646. allow our jesus into your life. Please listen

  647. to our gospel. Well, please come to our

  648. church. Please don't think that we're weird. Please.

  649. Come come come as if we're sowing like

  650. a crummy used car or or an extended

  651. warranty on a 20 dollar item.

  652. Pray that we see clearly that we're not

  653. selling a lame product.

  654. Right? Do you understand this is what Jesus

  655. just say, hey, go preach and share. But

  656. if they're not gonna accept, don't beg them

  657. to take it,

  658. We're declaring the good news of Jesus isn't

  659. in his kingdom,

  660. which is the single most constant good of

  661. all creation and everyone needs it. You don't

  662. have a bad product or a bad thing.

  663. You have to truth and the light, and

  664. that's what you're sharing. And some will accept

  665. it,

  666. and some will refuse it.

  667. If we cannot understand that someone will refuse

  668. it and move on,

  669. then we'll probably get disheartening and stop sharing

  670. altogether spend too much time with the same

  671. person never realizing there are other people who

  672. could hear.

  673. And, I'm encouraged by that. You have the

  674. truth.

  675. No matter what the world says to you.

  676. You have the truth.

  677. Then the text shifts to the question

  678. setup part.

  679. It looks at King Hair. He was the

  680. same guy. If you remember the text earlier

  681. in the book who be beheaded John the

  682. baptist.

  683. Here hears that the 12 are going out,

  684. and they're doing what Jesus did. So now

  685. it's not just 1 guy. It's more

  686. a whole lot more and the 12 claiming

  687. the good news,

  688. of the kingdom of God and that it's

  689. doing something.

  690. Which makes Harriet perplexed and he starts getting

  691. worried. He starts wondering how who is this

  692. guy.

  693. He can't actually be John the baptist. I

  694. had that guy's head cut off. It it...

  695. People are saying elijah that doesn't make sense.

  696. Is it is it a prophet of old

  697. Harriet sees the effects of the kingdom of

  698. God breaking onto the scene. Remember this is

  699. king Here,

  700. and King Hair doesn't want anybody challenge him.

  701. So he's trying to figure out is this

  702. Jesus a threat to me. Even he's asking

  703. this question who is this, not because I

  704. wanna know and follow

  705. He wants to know if he's should try

  706. and take him out.

  707. That's why he says that he sought Jesus,

  708. not to hear the gospel. He he wants

  709. to know. Is is this another problem that

  710. I need to take care of?

  711. Even he was wrestling.

  712. After Jesus sends the 12 apostles out, they

  713. return for a debrief,

  714. Then this is a great lesson on disciples

  715. ship, I think. Right? He taught them, empowered

  716. them, sends them out, then they come back

  717. to tell their stories of how it went.

  718. This went really good. This was awful. I

  719. said the dumbest thing in the world. I

  720. didn't know what to do here. Like, they're

  721. they're coming back to debrief,

  722. but the problem is the crowds learn what

  723. they were doing and followed them.

  724. So Jesus began to speak through the crowds

  725. about the kingdom of God and heal any

  726. who had need of it until it got

  727. late on that night.

  728. And the 12 disciples said to Jesus, should

  729. we send the crowd away? I I kinda

  730. think that we should.

  731. It's getting late.

  732. Send them out to go get their own

  733. provisions to get their own food and and

  734. and get their own place to stay. I

  735. mean, we're a long ways off, Jesus. Like,

  736. it it's getting late. You you really need

  737. to send them away.

  738. Twitch Jesus replies.

  739. You give them something to eat.

  740. Like, that's a fairly wild thing to hear

  741. in the moment. There is a crowd of

  742. 5000

  743. men not to mention women and kids conservatively.

  744. There's probably well over 15000 people. This is

  745. not like a little group. This is a

  746. massive crowd they have 5 loaves of bread

  747. and 2 fish and jesus goes,

  748. launch feed them. Like, what do he what

  749. do you mean feed? Like, How how am

  750. I so how am I supposed to do

  751. that?

  752. And Jesus took the small amount of food

  753. and he broke the bread and he blessed

  754. it and he split the crowds into groups

  755. of of 50 and he fed them all.

  756. And here this point because this is the

  757. part that I think has meant to jump

  758. off the page.

  759. To the point that they were all satisfied.

  760. Not just to where like, they could get

  761. home

  762. or they were okay where some were satisfied,

  763. what Jesus provided to those people? There was

  764. none who would go, like, I just I

  765. just don't really feel like I got what

  766. I needed here.

  767. They were all satisfied. And afterwards, there were

  768. 12 baskets of leftovers picked up of extra.

  769. Again, you you need to process what Luke

  770. trying to show you. Yes, Cool miracle, but

  771. he's showing us other things as well. They

  772. had 5 things of bread. Like, probably pretty

  773. tiny. I might give me my daily bread.

  774. It's supposed to last 1 man, 1 meal

  775. or 1 day, and a couple little fish.

  776. And after Jesus does this work. There's 12...

  777. That's 7 items. I'm I'm pretty good at

  778. math. That's 7 items, and now there's 12

  779. baskets left over.

  780. Crisis sufficient to satisfy all,

  781. more than sufficient.

  782. Won't sit long in the miracle even though

  783. it is amazing, but I think it's another

  784. invitation for the disciples to believe though.

  785. Remember during the storm when they thought they

  786. were gonna die, they didn't allow themselves to

  787. consider Jesus at all that he was there.

  788. And now on the feeding of the crowd,

  789. they didn't consider Jesus once more. Again, that

  790. Jesus was with them. Again, and again, he's

  791. teaching them, do not forget your faith.

  792. Remember that question, where's your faith in this.

  793. Don't forget me even when things seem impossible.

  794. Remember in my kingdom, I have the power.

  795. So come to me. Believe in me consider

  796. me, even when things seem impossible to you.

  797. All things are possible for me. So come

  798. to me. I have what you need.

  799. And again, in light of the

  800. the truth, and I have what others need.

  801. Never forget it.

  802. I what satisfies,

  803. I am the world that never goes dry,

  804. He he's beginning to show, like, I have

  805. the power, but I need you to see

  806. me as more than just a miracle worker.

  807. I am your satisfaction.

  808. Friends that's what we're searching for.

  809. This gives a perfect transition

  810. To a little bit later, Jesus is off

  811. praying with the disciples. Remember, Luca showing us

  812. this consistent pattern of getting away to get

  813. close with the father.

  814. And Jesus sets it up? He asked them?

  815. Who do the crowds say that I am?

  816. This question is 1 of popular opinion. It's

  817. external.

  818. Who do others say that I am. What

  819. what is the what is the word on

  820. the streets? What what what what would Twitter

  821. be saying about me

  822. to which the disciples give an answer very

  823. similar to what Her does, will some think

  824. that you are a John the Baptist.

  825. Others elijah, others just another prophet,

  826. He's showing them or they're giving an answer

  827. that everyone's wrestling in in different ways. Some

  828. people think that you're just

  829. fiction and don't even exist, and some people

  830. have crazy ideas. Like, the the ideas are

  831. many over who you are, and then Jesus

  832. says, okay. Cool. Cool. Cool Cool.

  833. But what about you?

  834. Outside of others, outside of the popular opinion

  835. outside of all the noise. What about you?

  836. Who do you say that I am?

  837. All of a sudden, it's not external anymore.

  838. It's personal.

  839. All

  840. What about you?

  841. We worry so much about other people's lives

  842. and other people's faith and Jesus will not

  843. let us. What about you?

  844. Peter ended up answering

  845. the Christ of God.

  846. Now, Peter's answer, it it it may be

  847. harder for us to under stand,

  848. we're we're used to hearing

  849. the the the term or title Jesus or

  850. or Jesus Christ, or, we're we're used to

  851. maybe hearing some of those. So we We're

  852. gonna miss in here that Peter

  853. says the Christ and he's using a Greek

  854. word for a hebrew title of messiah.

  855. Which also means anointed 1. Peter is confessing

  856. out loud. He's saying more than you're the

  857. Jesus Christ. He he's saying you were the

  858. anointed

  859. 1

  860. the messiah of all,

  861. you've come to say to the people of

  862. God.

  863. You're the 1 that people have been waiting

  864. for since King David,

  865. the savior who had overthrow the enemies of

  866. Israel and all humanity namely sin.

  867. You were going to gather up from from

  868. the 4 corners of the Earth God's people

  869. and establish an usher in a perfect rain

  870. over the earth.

  871. While people... While Peter and the disciples didn't

  872. understand every detail perfectly, what they did see

  873. and pro and agree to hear. Is the

  874. biggest pictures that Jesus is the promised 1

  875. of God.

  876. The entire old testament is about you. You're

  877. the 1. You're the messiah,

  878. you are the scent 1. You're not just

  879. a prophet,

  880. You are the redeem.

  881. The long awaited savior, the hope of salvation,

  882. you are the deliver.

  883. Kent Hughes says this again, they've just been

  884. asked who do you say that I am?

  885. Ke Hughes says what we think about Jesus

  886. is everything.

  887. Acceptance or rejection of him makes all the

  888. difference. We must understand that he is

  889. messiah.

  890. God's son who came to us in human

  891. flesh and was crucified, buried and raised from

  892. the dead, thus paying the full penalty for

  893. our sins.

  894. He now reign in heaven and 1 day

  895. will judge every human who's has ever lived.

  896. To be there with him, we must believe

  897. this,

  898. we must rest our lives on this.

  899. Now interestingly, Peter's confession of who Jesus was

  900. was correct.

  901. But do you notice what Jesus says to

  902. him right after? He he strictly tells him

  903. and in the words here, it's like, almost

  904. a rebuke. It's a, a heavy.

  905. Don't tell anyone yet.

  906. Keep it quiet.

  907. That that that seems a little bit confusing.

  908. Like, a I nailed it. I got it

  909. right. Don't tell nobody.

  910. What?

  911. He tells him why because the son of

  912. man must suffer many things and be rejected

  913. by the elders and the chief priests and

  914. the scribes in and here it is and

  915. be killed.

  916. But on the third day rise again, this

  917. had to be a a shock. Remember, I

  918. I just understood that you're the Messiah, the

  919. set 1 of God, the the the anointed

  920. 1 to come and be the redeem, Now

  921. you're telling me you're gonna die.

  922. Again, the why why the secret.

  923. Why the weight to proclaimed Jesus messiah.

  924. They'd already been telling people about the kingdom

  925. of god being at hand.

  926. Why why couldn't they spell out that that

  927. Jesus was the long awaited 1. And the

  928. reason for this

  929. is that many wouldn't have understood what it

  930. meant and they would have tried to make

  931. it mean what they wanted it to mean.

  932. All explain that. If they started to claim

  933. Jesus messiah, the long awaited 1,

  934. there would be many who'd go

  935. okay. Yes. Love it, and they begin to

  936. try and push a political agenda to to

  937. overthrow any cost and make Jesus win.

  938. Many un regenerate, unsafe people would push Jesus

  939. forward without ever looking to him for their

  940. sin.

  941. Were their adoption to the kingdom of God.

  942. I want you to be the 1 who

  943. fixes things. I don't know necessarily want you

  944. to be my savior. This is the worry.

  945. They just look at Jesus as a means

  946. to get what they wanted. So Jesus is

  947. letting them know. My reign has to come

  948. with rejection and suffering.

  949. My work isn't to come march in

  950. power earthly kingdoms like rome,

  951. I've come as the anointed 1 to die

  952. to pay for the sins of the lost,

  953. He's telling him, you can't say everything yet

  954. because I can't have other people stop my

  955. death.

  956. Or through my per. I remember I've come

  957. to die.

  958. The messiah is the lamb of god, the

  959. lamb has to be slain.

  960. So you can't tell everyone yet. It's not

  961. time for that.

  962. If we read versus 18 through 27 1

  963. more time.

  964. We'll begin to try and figure out how

  965. to thread the needle a little bit.

  966. Now it happened that as they were praying

  967. alone, the disciples were with him, and he

  968. asked them who did the crowds say that

  969. I am,

  970. and they answered John the baptist, but other

  971. say Elijah,

  972. And others the 1 of the prophets of

  973. old has arise. Then he said to them,

  974. but who do you say that I am

  975. and Peter answered the Christ of God.

  976. And he strictly charged them and commanded them

  977. to tell this to no 1 saying the

  978. son of man must suffer many things and

  979. be rejected by the elders and the chief

  980. priests and the scribes and be killed and

  981. on the third day raised period.

  982. The next verses go with those.

  983. And he said to all,

  984. if anyone would come after me, let him

  985. deny himself

  986. and take up his cross daily and follow

  987. me,

  988. forever would save his life will lose it

  989. whoever loses life for my sake, we'll save

  990. it.

  991. For what is it profit man if he

  992. gains the whole world and loses or forfeit

  993. himself for whoever is ashamed of me and

  994. over my words,

  995. of of him, will the son of man

  996. be ashamed when he comes in glory and

  997. the glory of the father and the holy

  998. angels. But I tell you truly,

  999. there's some standing here who will not taste

1000. death until they see the kingdom of god.

1001. Often these verses are accumulated into you. Okay?

  1002. Section 18 through 22.

1003. So the question, who do you said? I

1004. am the cry. You got it right. Don't

1005. tell anyone. Period, like, a month later maybe

1006. he preach the other part. They think. The

  1007. the 23 through 27. As if they're a

1008. different theme and they're not, they go together,

  1009. I'm going to die. That's who I am.

1010. Following me means something for you and death

1011. is included as well. This message can't be

  1012. taken apart.

1013. Luke shows us the disciples know Jesus is

  1014. the messiah.

1015. And immediately, he hooks the reality of the

  1016. messiah,

1017. with the reality of death of laying down

1018. his life of not self protecting.

1019. With that foundation, we hear Jesus say, if

1020. anyone would come after me, if anyone would

1021. follow me. If anyone would know me. If

  1022. anyone would

1023. would identify by with me as their savior.

1024. If you have any lot with me?

1025. Because we're moving past, who do you say

1026. that I am in words, to a heart

1027. that knows who he is and actually follows

1028. him. If anyone would have any

1029. identification with me that's real, let him deny

1030. himself and take up at his cross

  1031. and follow me.

1032. That is if you think he is the

  1033. messiah.

1034. If you think Jesus is your personal savior

  1035. then

1036. You can't just believe things about him. You

  1037. have to follow him.

1038. If we think okay. What does that mean?

1039. Am I supposed to die on cross, nobody

  1040. he explains it.

1041. If we live trying to save ourselves,

1042. If we live trying to keep our own

1043. life trying to protect ourselves trying to get

  1044. everything that we want,

1045. live for only what feels good and what's

1046. easy and the path of least resistance then

1047. we'll actually lose our life.

1048. This is what is called the paradox of

1049. the kingdom of God, the of the upside

1050. down nature of the kingdom of God. When

1051. a person fights to protect and indulge and

1052. get... Though they think that's the key to

1053. where life comes from. It actually empty their

1054. life of all meaning and joy.

1055. And it leads not only to spiritual death,

1056. but eternal consequences as well.

1057. That's why Jesus says just 1 of the

1058. most simple but profound versus what good is

  1059. it?

  1060. What good

  1061. he he's he's giving you a picture, say

  1062. you get it all,

1063. all of it. Everything that you've ever wanted,

1064. like, you day dream what what I could

1065. have if I want the lunch... Say you

  1066. get everything.

1067. Good is it if you lose your soul

  1068. to get it.

  1069. That's a terrible trade.

1070. He's showing us what is so hard in

  1071. cultural christianity.

1072. Belief in Jesus in a biblical form leads

  1073. to following him.

1074. Not to the cross physically, but it leads

1075. to following him in the way of the

  1076. cross.

1077. And there are times when that's gonna hurt.

  1078. It'll feel like death, but it's not. It's

1079. the way of the savior.

1080. It's the way that actually leads to life,

  1081. true life and salvation.

1082. Here's the message to know Jesus rightly means

  1083. we follow him wholeheartedly.

1084. How do we do that? We follow him

1085. by living in light of his gospel.

1086. Not in the ways of the world.

1087. We follow his words and his commands and

1088. his directive because he actually gave a lot

1089. of really clear ones. We dedicate our lives

  1090. to him

1091. And even when it leads us into suffering

  1092. or mock

  1093. or

1094. ridicule or being left out.

1095. We follow anyway. This is what it looks

1096. like to live una ashamed of Jesus.

1097. To follow him with our lives, even in

  1098. a public way.

1099. This is what it looks like to live

  1100. una ashamed. Follow me

1101. in that way and I'll stand una ashamed

  1102. of you before God.

1103. 1 of the interesting things I saw so

  1104. many things online

1105. about the opening ceremony of the Olympics. And

1106. you do you see the interesting thing that

  1107. happened there.

  1108. There was AAA

1109. drag show recreation of the last supper

1110. and I saw so many people, so mad.

  1111. Ind nation. And and there's a there's a

1112. level that I think that can be appropriate

1113. to this. But but I had a couple

1114. conversations over the weekend, and

1115. I said, why are you so surprised?

1116. Jesus told us that we'd be laughed at?

  1117. Ridiculed mocked.

  1118. It's a part of it. And and there's

1119. a part of people when they're like,

1120. so offended how dare you? Is like, they

1121. they just don't believe this was true.

1122. What they're saying with their lives is that

1123. I don't really wanna pick up my cross.

1124. I want this to be easy. I wanna

  1125. get what I want. I want a genie

1126. in a bottle to fix everything I want.

1127. And any anytime it's not like that. I'm

  1128. out. I'm leaving.

1129. Jesus told us at times we are gonna

1130. be looked at this way.

1131. There's an in escape reality that Jesus is

1132. showing us and Luke highlighting.

1133. Who you think Jesus is will affect your

1134. life in the way you live.

1135. You cannot believe that he's savior and reject

  1136. him.

1137. You cannot receive his blessings

  1138. and reject his ways.

1139. He's inviting those are his out of a

  1140. life of self protection.

1141. Out of a life of selfish ness, or,

1142. out of a life of self gratification that

1143. just leaves you more empty than before, and

1144. into the deep waters of fulfillment in him.

1145. Began back to the miracle of the 5000,

  1146. and they were satisfied.

1147. My heart just kept thinking in light of

1148. the parable, the seed in the sore those

1149. who whoever years let them here.

1150. That belief lead to a life that's satisfied

1151. in King Jesus fully satisfied.

1152. Because he's the bread of life, the water

1153. that won't run dry, the savior your kingdom

1154. messiah. Will there be some unpleasant things? Sometimes

1155. yeah, But the the weird paradoxes, you'll still

  1156. be fine satisfaction.

  1157. In him.

1158. The question was presented to the disciples and

1159. is now laid before us, who do you

1160. think Jesus is, who is to you?

1161. And then Jesus just pressed it further, and

1162. what does that mean to your life?

1163. Are you ashamed of me? Do you follow

  1164. me?

  1165. You walk after me?

1166. The invitation is is really simple, come find

1167. redemption and freedom in king Jesus.

1168. Hedge no bets, burn your boats,

  1169. follow him with everything

1170. and see that he's better, worthy full of

  1171. grace and mercy

1172. following him won't always be easy. It's not

1173. always gonna be terrible either there.

1174. But you'll never look back and be, like,

1175. I was not worth it I wasted my

  1176. life.

  1177. Why? Because he's sufficient,

1178. and he is what satisfied over and over

1179. and over think of Jesus words, I'm the

1180. bread. On the water, on the well, on

1181. the way. On the light he's showing you

1182. over and over and over all the things

1183. that your heart seek, I've got it. Come,

  1184. come find it.

  1185. Today, we'll

1186. take comm like we normally do.

1187. Ben you guys can come back up first

    1 Corinthians 11:23–26

  1188. corinthians 11:23

1189. through 26 says for I received from the

  1190. Lord.

1191. What I also delivered to you, the Lord

1192. Jesus from the night when he's betrayed took

  1193. bread.

1194. And we had given things he broke. And

1195. he said this is my body, which is

  1196. for you.

1197. Do this as remembrance of me in the

1198. same way also, he took the cup after

1199. supper saying this cup is the new covenant

  1200. in my blood.

1201. Do this as often as you drink and

1202. remembrance it's of me for often as you

1203. eat this bread and drink the cup, you

1204. claim the Lord's death until he comes.

1205. Once again, just like every week we We

1206. come and we hear the lord. We hear

  1207. the word,

1208. then we get to come to the table

1209. again and remember that is him and him

1210. alone that give us all that we have.

1211. Yes, we can be fully satisfied in him,

1212. but only because of what he's done.

1213. So, yeah, it can be hard understanding that

1214. the way of the cross sometimes walks you

  1215. into difficulty.

1216. But you didn't have to earn it. You

1217. didn't have to do the the dying on

1218. the cross. You do the believing, and we

1219. come to the table again and again to

1220. remember it is him. And his kindness in

1221. his beauty. I pray as you come to

1222. the table that you would be satisfied.

  1223. I I pray if you've answered the question

1224. of who is Jesus in a in a

  1225. metaphor

1226. or knowledge based or he.

1227. Your heart would begin to understand it.

1228. That you would come to to him even

  1229. simple prayers today.

  1230. But I don't know if I feel satisfied,

  1231. Can you help me.

1232. And see if he will meet you in

1233. the place that you are, thank him for

1234. the goodness that he is given you. That's

  1235. the hope for today.

1236. Would you stand and pray with me?
