The Importance of Palm Sunday

Brother Jim: Today's scripture is there on the board for you.

Brother Jim: Today's title, The Importance of Palm Sunday.

Brother Jim: The importance of Palm Sunday.

Brother Jim: I've got the scripture up on the board here for you if you'd like

Brother Jim: to follow along.

Brother Jim: But better yet, if you turn to your Bibles, we're going to be

Brother Jim: starting in Matthew twenty one, one to eleven.

Brother Jim: Now they drew near Jerusalem and

Brother Jim: came to Bethany at the Mount of

Brother Jim: Olives.

Brother Jim: Then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, go into the

Brother Jim: village opposite you, and immediately you will find a

Brother Jim: donkey tied and a colt with her.

Brother Jim: Loose them and bring them to me.

Brother Jim: And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, the Lord has

Brother Jim: need of them, and immediately he will send them.

Brother Jim: All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by

Brother Jim: the prophet, saying, tell the daughter of Zion, behold, your

Brother Jim: King is coming to you lowly, and sitting on a donkey, a colt, the

Brother Jim: foal of a donkey.

Brother Jim: So the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them.

Brother Jim: They brought the donkey, and the colt laid their clothes on them

Brother Jim: and set him on them.

Brother Jim: And a very great multitude

Brother Jim: spread their clothes on the

Brother Jim: road.

Brother Jim: Others cut down branches from

Brother Jim: the trees and spread them on the

Brother Jim: road.

Brother Jim: Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed

Brother Jim: cried out, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David!

Brother Jim: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Brother Jim: Hosanna in the highest!

Brother Jim: And when he had come into Jerusalem, all the city was

Brother Jim: moved, saying, who is this?

Brother Jim: So the multitude said, This is

Brother Jim: Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth

Brother Jim: of Galilee.

Brother Jim: Again, my friends, the importance of Palm Sunday.

Brother Jim: There once was this little girl named Kate, and Kate did not

Brother Jim: want to wave the palm.

Brother Jim: Everyone else in church was smiling, lifting their green

Brother Jim: branches high, singing loudly.

Brother Jim: The room felt full of joy.

Brother Jim: But Kate just stood there, holding hers at her little side.

Brother Jim: Why aren't you waving it?

Brother Jim: Her little brother whispered.

Brother Jim: She shrugged.

Brother Jim: I don't get it.

Brother Jim: Why celebrate something that does not last?

Brother Jim: He looked confused, but before he could answer, the pastor

Brother Jim: began to tell the story of how Jesus entered the city.

Brother Jim: How people cheered and shouted, Hosanna!

Brother Jim: As if nothing could go wrong.

Brother Jim: Kate listened.

Brother Jim: Then she heard the next part.

Brother Jim: Just days later, the pastor said softly, those same voices.

Brother Jim: They changed.

Brother Jim: The room grew quiet.

Brother Jim: Kate looked down at her palm branch.

Brother Jim: It was fresh.

Brother Jim: It was alive, but she imagined it dry, brittle and forgotten.

Brother Jim: People were happy when it was easy.

Brother Jim: She whispered.

Brother Jim: Her mom, standing beside her, nodded gently.

Brother Jim: With that motherly wisdom.

Brother Jim: That's why this day matters.

Brother Jim: Why?

Brother Jim: Because it reminds us that real

Brother Jim: faith is not just about the

Brother Jim: happy moments.

Brother Jim: Her mom said it's about staying when things get hard.

Brother Jim: Kate slowly lifted her palm branch.

Brother Jim: This time Kate did not wave it because everyone else was.

Brother Jim: Kate waved it because she

Brother Jim: finally understood not just the

Brother Jim: cheering, but the choice to keep

Brother Jim: believing.

Brother Jim: After it fades.

Brother Jim: This morning, Rockford church.

Brother Jim: If you were out walking on a street or in a store and someone

Brother Jim: came up to you and asked you the true meaning of Palm Sunday,

Brother Jim: would you be able to give a correct response to them?

Brother Jim: What would your answer be?

Brother Jim: Would you be quick and right to the point?

Brother Jim: Or is there a possibility of a

Brother Jim: little bit of stumbling,

Brother Jim: bumbling and fumbling with your

Brother Jim: response?

Brother Jim: What is and what does Palm

Brother Jim: Sunday mean to you as a

Brother Jim: Christian, as a follower of

Brother Jim: Jesus Christ?

Brother Jim: Today, Palm Sunday marks the

Brother Jim: beginning of Holy Week as we

Brother Jim: address this morning, which is

Brother Jim: the most sacred time in the

Brother Jim: Christian calendar.

Brother Jim: Now, how many would say, oh,

Brother Jim: wait a minute, what about

Brother Jim: Christmas?

Brother Jim: No, the most sacred time for a

Brother Jim: Christian is now this week

Brother Jim: coming up.

Brother Jim: Did you know that Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus's triumphal?

Brother Jim: And there's a key word triumphal

Brother Jim: entry into Jerusalem, where

Brother Jim: crowds welcomed him with palm

Brother Jim: branches and shouts of praise

Brother Jim: right there at the end of your

Brother Jim: pews.

Brother Jim: You can see the little palm branches.

Brother Jim: Think of that, you.

Brother Jim: They're waving them, shouting,

Brother Jim: filled with all this

Brother Jim: anticipation.

Brother Jim: Filled with hope.

Brother Jim: If we put it in today's terminology, Jesus was the man.

Brother Jim: Like a celebrity or a rock star

Brother Jim: on the red carpet entering an

Brother Jim: awards venue.

Brother Jim: Think of that.

Brother Jim: Think of how we do it today.

Brother Jim: But Jesus was the man.

Brother Jim: And church.

Brother Jim: Palm Sunday is more than a celebration.

Brother Jim: Palm Sunday is a moment filled with deep meaning.

Brother Jim: Tension, yes, tension and truth about who Jesus really is and

Brother Jim: how mankind responds to him.

Brother Jim: Remember that word response when

Brother Jim: Jesus entered the city of

Brother Jim: Jerusalem?

Brother Jim: Jesus did not come on a war

Brother Jim: horse, not some jacked up

Brother Jim: muscles bulging under his armor

Brother Jim: with a massive sword that he's

Brother Jim: waving around the smell of blood

Brother Jim: and death.

Brother Jim: With all his victories now in society today, especially back

Brother Jim: in the eighties, remember?

Brother Jim: I remember this all your action

Brother Jim: war heroes Rambo,

Brother Jim: Schwarzenegger, just to name a

Brother Jim: few.

Brother Jim: They are all jacked up.

Brother Jim: They always beat the bad guys, right?

Brother Jim: This image that they presented in the movies.

Brother Jim: But here comes Jesus.

Brother Jim: Not jacked up, not with a do rag and camo on holding an M60.

Brother Jim: No, he came in on a donkey.

Brother Jim: Think of the difference there.

Brother Jim: He came in humbly.

Brother Jim: And how many times we create the wrong image in our head, the

Brother Jim: wrong image of Jesus?

Brother Jim: And I'd say I'm guilty of that too, sometimes.

Brother Jim: How about you?

Brother Jim: Jesus did not come as some political conqueror, kissing

Brother Jim: babies and shaking hands and asking people for their votes

Brother Jim: come election time.

Brother Jim: No, not making promises that he never would be filled.

Brother Jim: Because guess what?

Brother Jim: You start getting in your Bible.

Brother Jim: You start reading the word, the prophecies fulfilled by Jesus.

Brother Jim: And this is right on point.

Brother Jim: Right on point to the cross.

Brother Jim: Jesus came as a humble king.

Brother Jim: The crowd of people shouted, Hosanna to the Son of David,

Brother Jim: recognizing him as the Messiah.

Brother Jim: Yet this man called Jesus as again he just rode on a donkey.

Brother Jim: A symbol of what?

Brother Jim: A symbol of peace, not war.

Brother Jim: Do you understand that church?

Brother Jim: A symbol of peace.

Brother Jim: What is peace today?

Brother Jim: Do you know peace personally?

Brother Jim: Do our families know peace?

Brother Jim: Do our schools know peace?

Brother Jim: Do our governments know peace?

Brother Jim: Does society today know peace?

Brother Jim: What peace truly is?

Brother Jim: It's a battle, is it not?

Brother Jim: It's a battle.

Brother Jim: As well.

Brother Jim: Do you understand, Church.

Brother Jim: The people for them was a symbol of peace, not of war.

Brother Jim: And here's where it gets a little nasty.

Brother Jim: They were thinking of this war, man.

Brother Jim: This warlord coming in

Brother Jim: especially to help crush the

Brother Jim: Roman rule.

Brother Jim: These nasty Romans.

Brother Jim: That's what they were expecting.

Brother Jim: A terminator coming in.

Brother Jim: Now they got Jesus.

Brother Jim: And doing this.

Brother Jim: As I just said.

Brother Jim: Jesus fulfills a prophecy from the book of Zechariah nine nine.

Brother Jim: Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion.

Brother Jim: Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem.

Brother Jim: Behold your King.

Brother Jim: Your king is coming to you.

Brother Jim: He is just.

Brother Jim: And having what?

Brother Jim: Having salvation lowly and riding on a donkey.

Brother Jim: A colt, the foal of a donkey.

Brother Jim: Now, I pray Palm Sunday reminds both you and I. And if I can do

Brother Jim: it, you can definitely do.

Brother Jim: It reminds us that Jesus is kingdom.

Brother Jim: His kingdom is not of this world.

Brother Jim: We know that, don't we?

Brother Jim: Which means we are not of this world, right?

Brother Jim: We just got a blink of an eye here on this world.

Brother Jim: Let's turn this over today.

Brother Jim: His kingdom is not of this world.

Brother Jim: And Jesus Christ brings

Brother Jim: salvation through humility and

Brother Jim: sacrifice.

Brother Jim: Now let us add a little more to this foundation of simple but

Brother Jim: yet powerful knowledge.

Brother Jim: Palm Sunday exposes man's heart, the human heart, our heart.

Brother Jim: I'm gonna pick a little bit here.

Brother Jim: Think of all you die hard Cleveland Browns fans out there.

Brother Jim: Through it all, you are faithful.

Brother Jim: And you are hopeful because at the very minimum you always have

Brother Jim: next season, right?

Brother Jim: But if a miracle would happen,

Brother Jim: they actually start winning

Brother Jim: games.

Brother Jim: What happens with those other fans, those critics, those fair

Brother Jim: weather fans, if you will?

Brother Jim: When the team is winning?

Brother Jim: Oh, they're loud.

Brother Jim: They're excited.

Brother Jim: They're loyal.

Brother Jim: But when the team is losing, they're quiet.

Brother Jim: They're critical.

Brother Jim: And usually they're gone.

Brother Jim: And if you think about it,

Brother Jim: that's the same kind of thing

Brother Jim: that happened with Jesus here at

Brother Jim: first.

Brother Jim: Woo!

Brother Jim: Yes!

Brother Jim: Jesus.

Brother Jim: And at the end, what did they do?

Brother Jim: There was no woos left.

Brother Jim: There was.

Brother Jim: Cheers to crucify him.

Brother Jim: Think about that.

Brother Jim: The same crowd.

Brother Jim: And that could be you and I.

Brother Jim: Groups of fans at one moment

Brother Jim: crying Hosanna!

Brother Jim: Hosanna!

Brother Jim: And soon would cry and yell, crucify him!

Brother Jim: Crucify him!

Brother Jim: Talk about a switch flipping the script right there.

Brother Jim: And this shift reveals how

Brother Jim: easily people can be persuaded

Brother Jim: and misguided by those so-called

Brother Jim: fans.

Brother Jim: And yes, even the critics at times.

Brother Jim: It happens in our day and age.

Brother Jim: It happens to me.

Brother Jim: True.

Brother Jim: You get on Facebook or you get

Brother Jim: on marketplace, or you're

Brother Jim: reading comments about

Brother Jim: something.

Brother Jim: Isn't it easy how we are persuaded by other's comments?

Brother Jim: Should I buy this product?

Brother Jim: Is this product of quality or value?

Brother Jim: Oh wait, there's a lot of one stars here out of five.

Brother Jim: Easily persuaded I am.

Brother Jim: The people.

Brother Jim: The crowd misunderstood Jesus and his purpose.

Brother Jim: Why he was there who.

Brother Jim: Church.

Brother Jim: Sound familiar?

Brother Jim: In our world, our society today.

Brother Jim: Even at this very moment.

Brother Jim: Even pastors and churches can fall into this category.

Brother Jim: True misunderstanding Jesus

Brother Jim: misunderstanding the Word of

Brother Jim: God, or better yet, making him

Brother Jim: fit, making the word fit our own

Brother Jim: agenda.

Brother Jim: And that's where problems start, don't they?

Brother Jim: When we think we know more than God.

Brother Jim: When we think we've got the better answer.

Brother Jim: Isn't it amazing, my friends, when you actually turn it over

Brother Jim: to God and do it his way?

Brother Jim: How much better it turns out?

Brother Jim: Yeah, I've said before and I'll

Brother Jim: keep saying it very hard headed

Brother Jim: at times.

Brother Jim: I am slowly learning, but just turn it over to God and allow

Brother Jim: God's timing to work.

Brother Jim: How many people still misunderstand Jesus though?

Brother Jim: How many people still misunderstand Jesus Christ and

Brother Jim: His purpose for this broken, lost, sin filled world?

Brother Jim: Do you understand what his true meaning, why he came?

Brother Jim: Romans six.

Brother Jim: Twenty three.

Brother Jim: Well, here's a good one right here to start us off.

Brother Jim: For the wages of sin is what?

Brother Jim: What's that?

Brother Jim: Death.

Brother Jim: But the gift of God is what?

Brother Jim: Eternal.

Brother Jim: And Jesus Christ our Lord.

Brother Jim: Death.

Brother Jim: Death.

Brother Jim: And I'm talking eternal death.

Brother Jim: Why is it church in our society today?

Brother Jim: You mention or advertise free.

Brother Jim: We all like free, don't we?

Brother Jim: We advertise free and excitement becomes the whole.

Brother Jim: I'm a semi amateur history buff and I couldn't help but think of

Brother Jim: this when I was preparing it.

Brother Jim: When we mentioned free.

Brother Jim: It's kind of like the whole Sioux nation going after General

Brother Jim: Custer all over again at the Battle of Little Bighorn.

Brother Jim: Now think about that.

Brother Jim: Men who were outnumbered.

Brother Jim: Chaos.

Brother Jim: People running all over the place.

Brother Jim: Free.

Brother Jim: Better yet, go to Black Friday.

Brother Jim: Ah, remember, in the good old

Brother Jim: days what Black Friday sales

Brother Jim: meant?

Brother Jim: People up at three a m, four a m

Brother Jim: to stand in line because it was

Brother Jim: free?

Brother Jim: Or I get a coupon for five dollars off.

Brother Jim: Chaos and pandemonium.

Brother Jim: Running wild.

Brother Jim: People everywhere to get free.

Brother Jim: Free.

Brother Jim: Free.

Brother Jim: And that's what we want, isn't it?

Brother Jim: So many times we just want it for free.

Brother Jim: But when it comes to this free gift that Jesus and I want to

Brother Jim: touch on that for us, it's free.

Brother Jim: But for Jesus, it was not free, was it?

Brother Jim: That's the thing we kind of forget about.

Brother Jim: Oh, it's a free gift.

Brother Jim: Yes, it is, but it costs something very dearly, very

Brother Jim: dearly to that man.

Brother Jim: But when it comes to this free

Brother Jim: gift that Jesus offers mankind,

Brother Jim: ladies and gentlemen, mankind

Brother Jim: does not even bother to open up

Brother Jim: the paper and at least look at

Brother Jim: the ad.

Brother Jim: True.

Brother Jim: How many times?

Brother Jim: Think about it when you get your sale ads in the mail.

Brother Jim: Going through that.

Brother Jim: Whew.

Brother Jim: But when it comes to God's word.

Brother Jim: How often?

Brother Jim: We just ignore it.

Brother Jim: Toss it to the side or just throw it away like trash.

Brother Jim: We just threw away and turned down our eternity.

Brother Jim: And that's what breaks my heart.

Brother Jim: How many people don't realize that?

Brother Jim: Did I just describe you today?

Brother Jim: Maybe you're looking for the free ad.

Brother Jim: Quick.

Brother Jim: And if it doesn't benefit me,

Brother Jim: well, I'm tossing it to the

Brother Jim: side.

Brother Jim: I'm tossing it to the trash.

Brother Jim: Oh, brother Jim, I got plenty of time on this earth.

Brother Jim: Plenty of time I'll get with Jesus later.

Brother Jim: You ever look around and notice

Brother Jim: all the people losing their life

Brother Jim: every day in accidents around

Brother Jim: here?

Brother Jim: Young family just lost a baby girl up in Canton the other day

Brother Jim: for to fire his life.

Brother Jim: Guaranteed.

Brother Jim: My friends, it's tomorrow.

Brother Jim: Guaranteed.

Brother Jim: No. But yet we take that

Brother Jim: salvation and we just toss it to

Brother Jim: the side.

Brother Jim: I'll wait for a better deal next week in the ads.

Brother Jim: Again, did I just describe you today?

Brother Jim: Or a loved one or a friend that you know, maybe?

Brother Jim: Or did you see the deal of a lifetime and cash in and praise

Brother Jim: God for that.

Brother Jim: You seen this is a deal of a lifetime and you cashed it in.

Brother Jim: You got down on your knees, you

Brother Jim: repented of your sins, and you

Brother Jim: asked Jesus Christ into your

Brother Jim: heart.

Brother Jim: Did you cash in?

Brother Jim: That gift that was offered to you, the gift of salvation.

Brother Jim: You see, these people expected a

Brother Jim: Savior who would overthrow Rome,

Brother Jim: not one that would suffer and

Brother Jim: die.

Brother Jim: Palm Sunday should challenge you and I to ask, do we follow Jesus

Brother Jim: for he for who he truly is.

Brother Jim: I've been so guilty of it in my life.

Brother Jim: Treating Jesus.

Brother Jim: Like a little thing.

Brother Jim: You rub a little lamp waiting for him to appear.

Brother Jim: To give you three wishes.

Brother Jim: How many of us can say that?

Brother Jim: Yeah.

Brother Jim: The only time we turn to Jesus is when we need something.

Brother Jim: How often do we feel like that

Brother Jim: as adults, grandparents,

Brother Jim: friends, coworkers?

Brother Jim: It happens.

Brother Jim: Jesus is more than just a few wishes, my friends.

Brother Jim: But here's a warning for all of us.

Brother Jim: Faith that depends on circumstances is fragile.

Brother Jim: Faith that depends on some circumstances is fragile.

Brother Jim: True faith.

Brother Jim: Trust Jesus even when he does not meet our expectations.

Brother Jim: Some a little bit more knowledge for you and I today.

Brother Jim: Here.

Brother Jim: Palm Sunday calls for true worship.

Brother Jim: Go back to our scripture.

Brother Jim: You have the people waving the

Brother Jim: palm branches, a symbol of

Brother Jim: victory, and even laid their

Brother Jim: cloaks before him, honoring him

Brother Jim: as king.

Brother Jim: Sounds very impressive, does it not?

Brother Jim: But true worship is more than just outward praise.

Brother Jim: True worship requires.

Brother Jim: Our surrender, our obedience.

Brother Jim: You and I acknowledging Jesus as Lord over every.

Brother Jim: There's the big word, every part of our life.

Brother Jim: And is that not to struggle for so many people?

Brother Jim: Giving it all up.

Brother Jim: We're like little hoarders sometimes, trying to hold on to

Brother Jim: that one little piece.

Brother Jim: That's one little piece.

Brother Jim: You know?

Brother Jim: Jesus did not come to be admired.

Brother Jim: He came to be followed.

Brother Jim: And here we go.

Brother Jim: Church.

Brother Jim: Palm Sunday points to the cross.

Brother Jim: Points to the cross.

Brother Jim: Even in the celebration, the shadow of the cross looms.

Brother Jim: Jesus entered Jerusalem knowing

Brother Jim: that within days he would be

Brother Jim: crucified.

Brother Jim: Palm Sunday is not just about praise.

Brother Jim: Palm Sunday is about the path, the journey to sacrifice.

Brother Jim: In Luke nineteen, verse forty one, now as he drew near, he saw

Brother Jim: the city, and he wept over it.

Brother Jim: He wept over it.

Brother Jim: Jesus wept over Jerusalem.

Brother Jim: Jesus knew.

Brother Jim: He knew this.

Brother Jim: Many would reject him.

Brother Jim: And hopefully we are connecting

Brother Jim: the dots about the message from

Brother Jim: last week.

Brother Jim: The hen with her chicks.

Brother Jim: Remember the hen protecting her chicks?

Brother Jim: A little truth this morning from Brother Jin.

Brother Jim: Just simply Jim.

Brother Jim: A man who accepted God's mercy and grace.

Brother Jim: The salvation from his son Jesus Christ.

Brother Jim: With this calling, it does.

Brother Jim: It breaks my heart because I see people.

Brother Jim: I hear people just flat out turning their backs and

Brother Jim: basically spitting on what Jesus spitting on what Jesus Christ

Brother Jim: has done for them on that cross.

Brother Jim: And I do not understand why, and especially because I was there.

Brother Jim: How many of you were there at a point in your life where you

Brother Jim: knew no peace, you knew no love.

Brother Jim: You were at the bottom of the

Brother Jim: barrel, you were broken and

Brother Jim: basically on a one way ticket to

Brother Jim: hell.

Brother Jim: But you know what?

Brother Jim: Even I, as stubborn as I am and full hearted, I got it.

Brother Jim: So again, it's like why people I see people who are so much

Brother Jim: smarter, so much more loving.

Brother Jim: They're like the perfect person, except they don't have Jesus.

Brother Jim: There is so much more to this guy named Jesus and what he can

Brother Jim: do for you in your life.

Brother Jim: Your life can be very good, sweet, blessed, or very messed

Brother Jim: up, good or bad.

Brother Jim: Jesus Christ is the game changer, a life saver?

Brother Jim: Show me how he's not.

Brother Jim: Please.

Brother Jim: I challenge anybody here today or in the world.

Brother Jim: Show me how Jesus Christ did not make your life better.

Brother Jim: Palm Sunday reminds you and I as well as the world.

Brother Jim: God's God's love.

Brother Jim: It's present right now.

Brother Jim: It's present right now.

Brother Jim: And it's persistent.

Brother Jim: Jesus willingly went to the cross.

Brother Jim: Salvation comes through his sacrifice.

Brother Jim: Brothers and sisters, Palm Sunday should ask each of us a

Brother Jim: very personal question.

Brother Jim: How am I going to respond to Jesus the King?

Brother Jim: How am I going to respond?

Brother Jim: Anybody here get complacent?

Brother Jim: Just go with the flow.

Brother Jim: Kind of doing the same thing day in, day out?

Brother Jim: Yes.

Brother Jim: You don't think I battle that?

Brother Jim: I know most of us here do.

Brother Jim: But we have an option.

Brother Jim: We have the ability to respond different than others.

Brother Jim: To who?

Brother Jim: What do you allow?

Brother Jim: How do you allow Jesus to be Lord of your whole life?

Brother Jim: And that is the question.

Brother Jim: What percentage of him or what

Brother Jim: percentage of you does Jesus

Brother Jim: really have?

Brother Jim: Rockford Church.

Brother Jim: Will you praise him only in the

Brother Jim: good times, or will you follow

Brother Jim: him faithfully, even to that

Brother Jim: cross?

Brother Jim: Let you and I not be like the crowd that changed its voice?

Brother Jim: No. How about instead let you and I welcome Jesus with here we

Brother Jim: go, sincere hearts, not just with words, but with our lives.

Brother Jim: We can talk a good game, can't we?

Brother Jim: Oh, we can talk a good game.

Brother Jim: What's your life really represent?

Brother Jim: If we would just welcome Jesus with it all.

Brother Jim: To give it our all.

Brother Jim: Palm branches waved and praised.

Brother Jim: To remind us to welcome Christ into our hearts daily.

Brother Jim: Take a look at these palm branches one last time.

Brother Jim: Think about how quick, how quick it changed, how quick does it

Brother Jim: change in your own life?

Brother Jim: One minute you're filled with

Brother Jim: the spirit and the next you're

Brother Jim: dragging.

Brother Jim: How do we fix that?

Brother Jim: Giving it all to Jesus.

Brother Jim: Giving it all.

Brother Jim: I close with this.

Brother Jim: What are you waving in your life and your heart?

Brother Jim: What are you waving?

Brother Jim: And your life and your heart right now?
