Brother Jim: What kind of church would we be if we said no?

Brother Jim: I got chicken dinner waiting on me, I gotta go.

Brother Jim: Usually eats lunch.

Brother Jim: So there you go.

Brother Jim: All right, my friends.

Brother Jim: One nation under God.

Brother Jim: We've heard it.

Brother Jim: We've seen it.

Brother Jim: The themes everywhere.

Brother Jim: Church is just patriotic, I love it.

Brother Jim: You see the flags.

Brother Jim: But what really does one nation, under God mean to you?

Brother Jim: We sure do say it a lot, don't we?

Brother Jim: But do we really mean it?

Brother Jim: Do we really mean it?

Brother Jim: Now, of course, yesterday, this weekend, our nation celebrated

Brother Jim: Independence Day two hundred and fifty years as a nation.

Brother Jim: That says something, don't it?

Brother Jim: Through the good, through the bad.

Brother Jim: We've survived.

Brother Jim: Across America.

Brother Jim: Flags wave.

Brother Jim: Fireworks.

Brother Jim: I lost mine already.

Brother Jim: You get the point.

Brother Jim: Fireworks, sparklers, firecrackers, you name it.

Brother Jim: Lighting up the sky.

Brother Jim: American songs.

Brother Jim: Getting a red, white and blue.

Brother Jim: All going through your veins.

Brother Jim: Families gathered around picnic tables.

Brother Jim: Communities pause to remember the birth of our nation.

Brother Jim: But my friends, the Fourth of

Brother Jim: July is more than just a

Brother Jim: holiday.

Brother Jim: It is a reminder.

Brother Jim: A reminder that freedom comes at a tremendous cost.

Brother Jim: Our nation's liberty was secured

Brother Jim: through sacrifice, through

Brother Jim: courage, conviction, and the

Brother Jim: willingness.

Brother Jim: And I love this the willingness

Brother Jim: of ordinary men and women to

Brother Jim: stand for extraordinary

Brother Jim: principles.

Brother Jim: You ever get to the point where you're fed up?

Brother Jim: You've had enough.

Brother Jim: It's time to make a stand.

Brother Jim: And that's exactly what happened.

Brother Jim: They decided.

Brother Jim: And that's what I love.

Brother Jim: And that's what's great about America.

Brother Jim: I don't care what color you are.

Brother Jim: Race you are.

Brother Jim: Whatever.

Brother Jim: Ordinary people have opportunity here.

Brother Jim: And that's what it took ordinary people to say no more.

Brother Jim: And it's funny how Jesus.

Brother Jim: How the Lord uses ordinary people throughout the Bible.

Brother Jim: There must be something special about ordinary.

Brother Jim: As Christians, I pray that we

Brother Jim: are grateful for the freedoms we

Brother Jim: enjoy.

Brother Jim: Are we as individuals in a church, thankful for those who

Brother Jim: have served in our armed forces?

Brother Jim: And we got some sitting in here

Brother Jim: today that have served armed

Brother Jim: forces.

Brother Jim: Do we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice?

Brother Jim: Wednesday night.

Brother Jim: You're missing out.

Brother Jim: I'll tell you that right now

Brother Jim: because we've been talking about

Brother Jim: consumer.

Brother Jim: We are consumers here in a church.

Brother Jim: We can become consumers.

Brother Jim: But are we passing on what it means when them American flags

Brother Jim: are by a headstone?

Brother Jim: Do our children understand?

Brother Jim: Are we too busy or we got our faces and our phones to explain

Brother Jim: to them how many children, how many of our.

Brother Jim: How many of our older people like me truly understand what

Brother Jim: the Revolution Revolutionary War meant what the Civil War meant.

Brother Jim: Our battles in Europe.

Brother Jim: Do they truly understand what a

Brother Jim: flag means at a headstone, or

Brother Jim: would they see men and women in

Brother Jim: uniform?

Brother Jim: Have we told them the truth, or do they get the short little

Brother Jim: version of it?

Brother Jim: While we celebrate America today.

Brother Jim: Yesterday, throughout this week, two hundred and fifty years as a

Brother Jim: nation, we also must remember something even greater.

Brother Jim: Our greatest hope was never has, never will.

Brother Jim: Never rest in Washington, D.C..

Brother Jim: No, it will not.

Brother Jim: Our greatest hope rests in heaven.

Brother Jim: Governments will rise and governments will fall.

Brother Jim: Empires will come and empires will go.

Brother Jim: Nations are born.

Brother Jim: And guess what?

Brother Jim: Nations do disappear.

Brother Jim: Look at the history of mankind throughout the years.

Brother Jim: But.

Brother Jim: And here's that big but the

Brother Jim: kingdom of God will stand

Brother Jim: forever.

Brother Jim: It's going to stand forever, folks.

Brother Jim: As followers of Christ, we can

Brother Jim: deeply love our country without

Brother Jim: confusing our country as our

Brother Jim: Savior.

Brother Jim: So many Americans proudly wave the American flag.

Brother Jim: But how many Americans bow only

Brother Jim: before the cross of Jesus

Brother Jim: Christ?

Brother Jim: Oh, and we become a nation of

Brother Jim: consumers with our little t

Brother Jim: shirts.

Brother Jim: I stand for the flag and bow for God.

Brother Jim: Do you really?

Brother Jim: Do you really?

Brother Jim: That's the question I want to

Brother Jim: ask, because I see a lot of good

Brother Jim: old boys that I love wearing

Brother Jim: them.

Brother Jim: Types of shirts.

Brother Jim: Do you really bow for God?

Brother Jim: Just out of curiosity.

Brother Jim: I have found for myself that

Brother Jim: perhaps we have twisted, twisted

Brother Jim: patriotism along with hope in

Brother Jim: that cross.

Brother Jim: Is it possible that some have forgotten the true meaning of

Brother Jim: being a Christian American?

Brother Jim: Now, in Romans thirteen one to seven.

Brother Jim: Let every soul be subject to the government's authorities, for

Brother Jim: there is no authority except from God, and the authorities

Brother Jim: that exist are appointed by God.

Brother Jim: Therefore, whoever resists the

Brother Jim: authorities resists the

Brother Jim: ordinance of God, and those who

Brother Jim: resist will bring judgment on

Brother Jim: themselves.

Brother Jim: For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil.

Brother Jim: Do you want to be unafraid of the authority?

Brother Jim: Do what is good and you will have praise from the same.

Brother Jim: For he is God's minister to you for good.

Brother Jim: But if you do evil, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword

Brother Jim: in vain, for he is God's minister, an avenger, to execute

Brother Jim: wrath on him who practices evil.

Brother Jim: Therefore, you must be subject not only because of wrath, but

Brother Jim: also for conscience sake.

Brother Jim: For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God's

Brother Jim: ministers, attending continually to this very thing.

Brother Jim: Honor.

Brother Jim: Render therefore, to all their

Brother Jim: due taxes, to whom taxes are

Brother Jim: due, customs to whom customs

Brother Jim: fears, to whom fear, honor to

Brother Jim: whom honor.

Brother Jim: Now that's a tough one to swallow.

Brother Jim: My friends just got the bill for taxes, land taxes.

Brother Jim: But there's a purpose and there's a reason.

Brother Jim: But right there.

Brother Jim: Okay.

Brother Jim: Okay.

Brother Jim: Now, church, I think we can all agree.

Brother Jim: America has been wonderfully blessed, has it not?

Brother Jim: And yes, the history of America is far from perfect.

Brother Jim: Lord knows we've made our mistakes.

Brother Jim: One nation.

Brother Jim: Our nation has known triumph and

Brother Jim: its known failures, moments of

Brother Jim: justice and moments of

Brother Jim: injustice.

Brother Jim: But no honest observer can deny that God has richly blessed this

Brother Jim: nation of ours.

Brother Jim: We have experienced freedom's many people around the world can

Brother Jim: only dream of.

Brother Jim: And that is so true.

Brother Jim: That is so true.

Brother Jim: Freedom to worship, freedom to

Brother Jim: speak, freedom to gather and

Brother Jim: freedom to proclaim the gospel

Brother Jim: openly.

Brother Jim: Proclaim the gospel openly.

Brother Jim: You don't have to worry about

Brother Jim: some hit team coming up, taking

Brother Jim: you and your family and never

Brother Jim: seen, never to be seen again, do

Brother Jim: you?

Brother Jim: These blessings should never,

Brother Jim: never, never be taken for

Brother Jim: granted.

Brother Jim: But how many of us do take these

Brother Jim: blessings, these freedoms, for

Brother Jim: granted?

Brother Jim: I'm guilty of it.

Brother Jim: Guilty of it.

Brother Jim: The psalmist reminds us in Psalms thirty three twelve,

Brother Jim: blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he has

Brother Jim: chosen as his own inheritance.

Brother Jim: This blessing is not found in

Brother Jim: wealth, not in military

Brother Jim: strength, and not in political

Brother Jim: influence.

Brother Jim: The blessing comes when a people, a people acknowledge God

Brother Jim: and God alone.

Brother Jim: And oh my goodness, my friends

Brother Jim: America, where are we at right

Brother Jim: now?

Brother Jim: How many people our nation have we put substituted.

Brother Jim: Came up with false idols instead of God?

Brother Jim: Start thinking.

Brother Jim: Put your thinking caps on how

Brother Jim: many things have replaced God in

Brother Jim: our life.

Brother Jim: My friends, freedom always comes

Brother Jim: with responsibility, does it

Brother Jim: not?

Brother Jim: Many people define freedom as I can do whatever I want.

Brother Jim: Think about it.

Brother Jim: You see it, you hear it, you read about it.

Brother Jim: I can do whatever I want.

Brother Jim: But you know what?

Brother Jim: Let's go a little deeper.

Brother Jim: Scripture teaches us something different.

Brother Jim: Biblical freedom is not freedom from responsibility.

Brother Jim: It is freedom to live for God, not do what you want to do, but

Brother Jim: to live for God.

Brother Jim: In Galatians five thirteen, for you, brethren, have been called

Brother Jim: to liberty only do not use liberty as an opportunity for

Brother Jim: the flesh, but through love serve one another.

Brother Jim: Have we kind of twisted that a little bit, my friends?

Brother Jim: Have we?

Brother Jim: It's so easy to do.

Brother Jim: Be honest.

Brother Jim: It's so easy to do to get caught

Brother Jim: up in our society, our culture

Brother Jim: today.

Brother Jim: Instead of serving others, we serve ourselves.

Brother Jim: Our freedom should move our

Brother Jim: nation, you and I, toward

Brother Jim: worship, service, compassion,

Brother Jim: generosity, evangelism, and

Brother Jim: holiness.

Brother Jim: Freedom.

Brother Jim: Hear me.

Brother Jim: Freedom becomes a blessing only when it's used wisely.

Brother Jim: Wisely.

Brother Jim: Think about this.

Brother Jim: Go back when you first got your license.

Brother Jim: Now I know some of you got yours.

Brother Jim: If we're going that far back, it

Brother Jim: was in a Cracker Barrel cracker

Brother Jim: box, Jack.

Brother Jim: You know box.

Brother Jim: But go back when you first got your license and you received

Brother Jim: the keys to your first vehicle.

Brother Jim: Now, it might have been rusty, all dented up, barely running.

Brother Jim: But it was freedom, wasn't it?

Brother Jim: It was freedom.

Brother Jim: Those keys gave you freedom.

Brother Jim: But those keys also require responsibility.

Brother Jim: If you abuse that freedom, if

Brother Jim: you abuse those keys, people can

Brother Jim: get hurt.

Brother Jim: The same is true for our nation.

Brother Jim: Freedom without character eventually becomes chaos.

Brother Jim: Freedom guided by biblical

Brother Jim: principles, they become a

Brother Jim: blessing.

Brother Jim: Hear me on this.

Brother Jim: America's greatest need right now is not more weapons.

Brother Jim: It's not more money, not a better economy.

Brother Jim: it is need for spiritual revival.

Brother Jim: As you sit here today, do you agree with me on that one?

Brother Jim: How many of us, as well as our

Brother Jim: country, believe America's

Brother Jim: greatest problems are political

Brother Jim: or economical?

Brother Jim: Our schools and education?

Brother Jim: Is that the biggest problem we got going?

Brother Jim: No. How about our crime?

Brother Jim: Senseless violence?

Brother Jim: Yeah, those are big problems, don't get me wrong.

Brother Jim: Others say discrimination, abortion, how you identify in

Brother Jim: your gender, your sexuality.

Brother Jim: The list can go on and on, my friends.

Brother Jim: The battle in our churches, in

Brother Jim: our churches, along with

Brother Jim: rewriting scripture to fit our

Brother Jim: own needs and wants to validate

Brother Jim: our own sin so we can feel good

Brother Jim: about it.

Brother Jim: And yes, these are very heavy hitters.

Brother Jim: These are big issues.

Brother Jim: But beneath every cultural

Brother Jim: problem lies a spiritual

Brother Jim: problem.

Brother Jim: Our greatest need is not merely better policies.

Brother Jim: Our greatest need is transformed hearts.

Brother Jim: Transformed hearts.

Brother Jim: God told his people in second

Brother Jim: Chronicles seven fourteen, if my

Brother Jim: people who are called by my name

Brother Jim: will.

Brother Jim: Oh, boy.

Brother Jim: What's that word right there?

Brother Jim: Huh?

Brother Jim: Say it loud.

Brother Jim: Will humble themselves and pray.

Brother Jim: There's another word.

Brother Jim: Pray.

Brother Jim: My face.

Brother Jim: Oh, here we go again.

Brother Jim: And what?

Brother Jim: Turn.

Brother Jim: Say it again.

Brother Jim: Turn from their wicked ways.

Brother Jim: Then I will hear from heaven.

Brother Jim: And I will forgive their sin and heal their land.

Brother Jim: Some big words in there, isn't there?

Brother Jim: Big words that require actions.

Brother Jim: Requires your actions.

Brother Jim: Requires my actions.

Brother Jim: And the biggest one I see.

Brother Jim: Turn.

Brother Jim: Turn from your wicked ways.

Brother Jim: Turn from their wicked ways.

Brother Jim: But what's wicked anymore.

Brother Jim: What's considered wicked?

Brother Jim: Now we as believers in Christ.

Brother Jim: We got our own definition of wicked, don't we?

Brother Jim: But you go across the road and ask somebody.

Brother Jim: They might have a completely different interpretation.

Brother Jim: But notice God did not begin with politicians.

Brother Jim: God began with his people.

Brother Jim: Revival begins in the church.

Brother Jim: Revival begins in our homes.

Brother Jim: Revival begins in our own hearts.

Brother Jim: More than ever, Christians must be salt and light.

Brother Jim: And I said this Wednesday night, and I'll say it very quickly

Brother Jim: down at conference they were talking about revival.

Brother Jim: And guess what they said, you know where revival starts.

Brother Jim: Revival starts right here.

Brother Jim: Revival starts with each one of you.

Brother Jim: Now we pray for revival in our

Brother Jim: nation, which is great, but we

Brother Jim: seem to skip the revival in our

Brother Jim: own lives.

Brother Jim: How many of you here?

Brother Jim: And I'm putting me at the head of the list here.

Brother Jim: I've got it all going on.

Brother Jim: You got it all going on for God.

Brother Jim: You're perfect.

Brother Jim: Anybody?

Brother Jim: No, no. It's still a work in progress for me.

Brother Jim: Still transforming.

Brother Jim: But that really hit home.

Brother Jim: Here are leaders of the Global Methodist very humbly saying

Brother Jim: revival begins with each one of you and each of your churches.

Brother Jim: But you know what?

Brother Jim: Here's the cool thing.

Brother Jim: Just think, if we start revival in our own hearts here.

Brother Jim: What do you think God's going to do with that?

Brother Jim: Do you think he's going to bless that?

Brother Jim: Do you think he's going to blow it up?

Brother Jim: Maybe not.

Brother Jim: That little rocket I brought.

Brother Jim: It makes a heck of a bang.

Brother Jim: But just think what the Holy Spirit can do.

Brother Jim: It's going to be more of a bang.

Brother Jim: It's going to be a boom, a boom.

Brother Jim: How many of you want a boom?

Brother Jim: How many of you are tired of living the same old life every

Brother Jim: day, going through the same routines, life kicking you right

Brother Jim: in the backside?

Brother Jim: It gets old, doesn't it?

Brother Jim: So why can't we get our boom on today?

Brother Jim: Why can't our boom come now?

Brother Jim: Because guess what?

Brother Jim: Monday starts tomorrow morning.

Brother Jim: Sunday nights.

Brother Jim: Tonight, isn't it?

Brother Jim: How many of us dread Sunday nights?

Brother Jim: Because that means we gotta go to work Sunday.

Brother Jim: Monday morning.

Brother Jim: Except for you retired folks.

Brother Jim: I don't know what you feel

Brother Jim: Sunday night, but again, where's

Brother Jim: our boom revival in our own

Brother Jim: life?

Brother Jim: Getting back to Matthew five thirteen sixteen, you are the

Brother Jim: salt of the earth.

Brother Jim: But if the salt loses its

Brother Jim: flavor, how shall it be

Brother Jim: seasoned?

Brother Jim: It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled

Brother Jim: under foot by men.

Brother Jim: You are the light of the world, a city that is set on a hill.

Brother Jim: Think of that.

Brother Jim: That big old city up on a hill.

Brother Jim: It can't be hidden.

Brother Jim: Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket.

Brother Jim: That'd be kind of dumb, wouldn't it?

Brother Jim: You got all this work of

Brother Jim: lighting a candle, getting

Brother Jim: light, and then you put a basket

Brother Jim: over it.

Brother Jim: But on a lampstand, it gives

Brother Jim: light to all who are in the

Brother Jim: house.

Brother Jim: How about to all in your house?

Brother Jim: Are you a light in your house or you got the bucket over it?

Brother Jim: Or maybe you don't even like the light anymore.

Brother Jim: Let your light so shine before men.

Brother Jim: That they may see your good works.

Brother Jim: And glorify your father in heaven.

Brother Jim: And here's the bombshell that I'm guilty of.

Brother Jim: Of us.

Brother Jim: Jesus never told his followers to complain about the darkness,

Brother Jim: to complain about the darkness.

Brother Jim: Jesus told them to shine.

Brother Jim: Didn't say complain.

Brother Jim: He said to shine.

Brother Jim: Salt preserves and light reveals.

Brother Jim: The church exists to bring hope into a hurting world.

Brother Jim: Now we don't have to go to Africa.

Brother Jim: We don't have to go to Venezuela.

Brother Jim: There are hurting people right next door.

Brother Jim: Right next door.

Brother Jim: Not by hatred, not by fear, and not by division, but through

Brother Jim: truth spoken in love.

Brother Jim: America does not simply need louder voices.

Brother Jim: America needs faithful Christians.

Brother Jim: Back row.

Brother Jim: Middle row.

Brother Jim: Front row.

Brother Jim: Did you hear that?

Brother Jim: America needs faithful, humble

Brother Jim: Christians, followers of Jesus

Brother Jim: Christ.

Brother Jim: Neighbors who love.

Brother Jim: Parents who disciple churches

Brother Jim: that proclaim the gospel without

Brother Jim: compromise.

Brother Jim: Believers, you and I who live what they profess.

Brother Jim: We need to remember the cost of freedom, my friends.

Brother Jim: We need to make sure these little ones in here today know

Brother Jim: the cost of freedom.

Brother Jim: Why did we celebrate yesterday?

Brother Jim: Why did we celebrate yesterday?

Brother Jim: Do our children truly understand what freedom really means?

Brother Jim: Not hot dogs, baseball, fireworks.

Brother Jim: Do they really understand the cost of freedom?

Brother Jim: Do you and I really understand, or have we become so complacent

Brother Jim: as well, taking for granted all that we've been blessed with?

Brother Jim: Have you and I made the choice

Brother Jim: to teach and explain to our

Brother Jim: children what freedom really

Brother Jim: means as individuals as well as

Brother Jim: a nation.

Brother Jim: Freedom has never been free.

Brother Jim: Many never returned home.

Brother Jim: Some came home carrying life long scars.

Brother Jim: Others continue serving.

Brother Jim: Today often unseen, often unrecognized.

Brother Jim: Do we not owe them at least a little bit of gratitude?

Brother Jim: But there's another freedom purchased by even a great.

Brother Jim: Even at a greater price, Jesus Christ paid for our eternal

Brother Jim: freedom, our eternal freedom.

Brother Jim: How many people that you and I

Brother Jim: encounter every day really

Brother Jim: understand that?

Brother Jim: Do you.

Brother Jim: Yes.

Brother Jim: The soldier may preserve our earthly liberty, but only Jesus

Brother Jim: and only Jesus can deliver us from our sin.

Brother Jim: The American soldier may defend our Constitution.

Brother Jim: Jesus alone can redeem our souls.

Brother Jim: And it's just my opinion here.

Brother Jim: But maybe that is the one we

Brother Jim: made a choice to ignore or

Brother Jim: forget as a nation and as a

Brother Jim: individual.

Brother Jim: That Jesus alone is the only one that's going to redeem our soul.

Brother Jim: Yes, both sacrifices deserve remembrance, but Christ's

Brother Jim: sacrifice stands above them all.

Brother Jim: You know what our highest

Brother Jim: citizenship is to God and to

Brother Jim: heaven.

Brother Jim: The Bible reminds believers that we are citizens of heaven.

Brother Jim: But that does not lessen our love for America, does it?

Brother Jim: I can still be a proud American, but you know what tops that?

Brother Jim: My eternal home, the Kingdom of God.

Brother Jim: Actually, it strengthens it because we know.

Brother Jim: And do you know that this world is not our final home?

Brother Jim: Not our final home.

Brother Jim: Do we love our nation?

Brother Jim: Do we pray for our leaders or do we complain?

Brother Jim: Do we serve our communities or do we simply ignore them?

Brother Jim: Do we honor those who sacrifice?

Brother Jim: How many of us sincerely

Brother Jim: understand that our ultimate

Brother Jim: allegiance belongs to Jesus

Brother Jim: Christ?

Brother Jim: Don't get me wrong, I love the flag.

Brother Jim: Got patriotic stuff, but my allegiance, my alliance that

Brother Jim: comes to God and God alone.

Brother Jim: Think about this for a moment as we close, flags eventually fade.

Brother Jim: Kingdoms eventually change, but the gospel.

Brother Jim: It remains forever.

Brother Jim: The flag and the cross.

Brother Jim: Imagine standing between two

Brother Jim: symbols, the American flag and

Brother Jim: the cross.

Brother Jim: One reminds us of the freedom to worship.

Brother Jim: The other reminds us of the freedom to be forgiven.

Brother Jim: One represents the sacrifice of brave men and women.

Brother Jim: The other represents the sacrifice of the Son of God.

Brother Jim: One deserves our respect.

Brother Jim: Yes, sir.

Brother Jim: It does.

Brother Jim: The other deserves our worship.

Brother Jim: Yes it does.

Brother Jim: Never confuse the two.

Brother Jim: Church honor both appropriately.

Brother Jim: My friends, we all have experienced political freedom in

Brother Jim: our life, have we not?

Brother Jim: But how many of you, as well as the people out there, have never

Brother Jim: experienced spiritual freedom?

Brother Jim: Jesus said in our final verse, John eight thirty six therefore,

Brother Jim: if the son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.

Brother Jim: Real freedom is not found in a document.

Brother Jim: Real freedom is not found in a government.

Brother Jim: Real freedom is not found in a political party.

Brother Jim: Real freedom is found in one person, the Son of God and his

Brother Jim: name is Jesus Christ.

Brother Jim: I can't emphasize that more enough.

Brother Jim: As we celebrated and continue to

Brother Jim: celebrate our independence, let

Brother Jim: us remember.

Brother Jim: Be grateful for the blessings of America.

Brother Jim: Honor those who sacrifice for our freedom.

Brother Jim: Pray faithfully for our nation and then pray some more.

Brother Jim: Live as ambassadors for Christ.

Brother Jim: Never forget that our greatest

Brother Jim: citizenship is in heaven and

Brother Jim: heaven alone.
