  1. Let us pray. Heavenly Father, praise be to your

  2. name. Make us ever mindful that we are the people

  3. of the resurrection and that there is no power

  4. greater than your power, no power that can overthrow

  5. thy purpose and thy kingdom. Help us to hear

  6. and obey your voice. We do humbly ask you now

  7. that by your mercies Your grace that you would

  8. make the words of my mouth and the meditations

  9. of all our hearts Acceptable in your sight o

  10. Lord our strength and nearest kinsman redeemer

  11. Jesus Christ amen As is our habit I know we have

  12. a few visitors today. We will be preaching I'll

  13. be preaching through their gospel reading today,

  14. so once again. Let us hear it as we Prepare to

  15. hear God's word Let us let not your heart be

  16. troubled you believe in God believe also in me

  17. In my father's house or many mansions if it were

  18. not so I would have told you I go to prepare

  19. a place for you, and if I go and prepare a place

  20. for you I will come again and receive you to

  21. myself that where I am there you may be also

  22. and Where I go you know and the way you know

  23. Thomas said to him Lord we do not know where

  24. you are going and how can we know the way? Jesus

  25. said to him I am the way the truth and the life

  26. No one comes to the father except through me

  27. If you had known me you would have known my father

  28. also from now on You know him and have seen him

  29. Philip said to him Lord show us the father and

  30. it is sufficient for us Jesus said to him, I

  31. have been with you so long and yet you have not

  32. known me, Philip. He who has seen me has seen

  33. the Father. So how can you say, show us the Father?

  34. Do you not believe that I am in the Father and

  35. the Father in me? The words that I speak to you,

  36. I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father

  37. who dwells in me does the works. Believe me that

  38. I am in the Father and the Father in me, or else

  39. believe me for the sake of the works themselves.

  40. Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes

  41. in me, the works that I do, he will do also,

  42. and greater works than these he will do because

  43. I go to my Father. And whatever you ask in my

  44. name, that I will do, that the Father may be

  45. glorified in the Son, if you ask anything in

  46. my name. I will do it. So as we look at this

  47. passage today, I want us to remember three things

  48. or kind of see it through this lens. One, we

  49. are not to be troubled in Christ Jesus. We are

  50. not to be troubled in Christ Jesus. Secondly,

  51. God abides in His temple, the church. God abides

  52. or dwells in the temple, His church. And finally,

  53. God provides all that His people need. God provides

  54. all that His people need. Now the word troubled

  55. is found twice in our text this morning. This

  56. word troubled in the Greek means to agitate,

  57. to cause an inward commotion, and in this case

  58. taking away the calmness of mind. striking at

  59. one's spirit with fear and dread. In today's

  60. vernacular, it is the actual state of anxiousness

  61. and distress. Do you ever feel that way? What

  62. is it in your life that causes you to be agitated

  63. and anxious? By the way, of those two, Right

  64. men lean towards agitation and women lean towards

  65. anxiousness and then sometimes both sexes do

  66. both What is it that makes you uncertain in your

  67. present life and in the future to come? What

  68. worries you what stirs you up? In the book of

  69. John chapters 13 through 17 is Jesus' last discourse

    John 13 chapter mention

  70. with His disciples before His arrest, torture,

  71. crucifixion, and death. Jesus who had been explaining

  72. His soon death and coming absence to them. And

  73. as He was doing this, it was making them to become

  74. alarmed. Earlier in John chapter 12, when Jesus

    John 12 chapter mention

  75. is in the temple, right before they come to this

  76. whole period where they're in the upper room

  77. in chapter 13, forward Jesus declares this now

  78. my soul is troubled same word and what shall

  79. I say father save me from this hour but for this

  80. purpose I came to this hour father glorify your

  81. name then a voice came from heaven saying I have

  82. both glorified it and will glorify it again Then

  83. Jesus cried out and said he who believes in me

  84. Believes not in me, but in him who sent me and

  85. he who sees me Sees him who sent me so here before

  86. they get to the upper room. Jesus is declaring

  87. these exact issues Is saying the same thing except

  88. for he prefaces it by saying that he is troubled

  89. And what does he do? He puts his focus on the

  90. fact of saying, should I ask God to change my

  91. life? No. Here I am. To this, I was caused. This

  92. is very important for us to understand. Do you

  93. realize that all the circumstances that you find

  94. yourself in your life, this very hour, everything,

  95. all of it, your health, your life, your relationships,

  96. Your work, all of these things, the state of

  97. our nation, the state of the church, all of these

  98. things, God has called you to this very hour.

  99. And what does Jesus do? He doesn't focus on what

  100. is troubling so much, but is trusting the Father

  101. to see him through his call, and that in his

  102. call, God the Father would receive glory. Now

  103. this is very important. We're gonna come back

  104. to this, but you're gonna see this word glory

  105. show up again and again And it plays a really

  106. big role as we come towards the end of our text

  107. Jesus is troubled for he knows what is about

  108. to happen and all the difficulties that will

  109. be given to his disciples He knows what's gonna

  110. happen. He knows that he's going to die. He's

  111. gonna be separated that his disciples are going

  112. to flee under the pressure. They're going to

  113. be locked up in ruins, afraid. He knows all this.

  114. But this is the very purpose for which he has

  115. come, to glorify the Father and the atoning work

  116. of reconciling sinners to God, to relieve the

  117. world of condemnation. Still with some ignorance

  118. concerning all their hopes and plans Right their

  119. ignorance. They've got their own agendas They

  120. think they know how the world's gonna turn out

  121. how the them being with Jesus is gonna turn out

  122. And they see that their plans were being drastically

  123. overturned first by the words of Jesus and then

  124. secondly by the way the world opposed them and

  125. They are becoming more and more agitated uncertain

  126. and in John chapter 13 Jesus reveals because

    John 13 chapter mention

  127. he was troubled it tells us most assuredly remember

  128. we talked about this what is most assuredly it's

  129. amen and amen basically he's saying twice to

  130. you truly truly this thing that I'm about to

  131. say is the absolute truth and so I'll say it

  132. again truly truly he says this Most assuredly

  133. truly truly one of you will betray me Now a lot

  134. of times we look at that and we're like when

  135. they start asking around is it me You know who

  136. is it Lord? Right and Jesus answers that it's

  137. Judas We have this tendency to say man that that

  138. sorry guy Judas, but I want you to think about

  139. this Jesus rebuked Peter so hard that he said,

  140. Satan get behind me. He's constantly correcting

  141. them. You got it all wrong. This isn't what God

  142. has for you. This isn't what I have for you.

  143. And this isn't what God has for me as you follow

  144. me. You can almost say in their doubts and fears

  145. with tensions rising and their uncertainty, they're

  146. saying, I'm glad it wasn't me, because it could

  147. have been. The scripture says that they were

  148. perplexed and that they were at a loss with what

  149. to do with Jesus was telling them. They didn't

  150. even know how to respond. Dearly beloved, we

  151. have all found ourselves in circumstances where

  152. we do not know what to do about the enemies that

  153. God has given us. We become uncertain and anxious.

  154. Sometimes we even know what the Word of God says

  155. and we're still stirred up, agitated, troubled,

  156. and anxious. And it is in this context that Jesus

  157. declares, hear it now, let not your heart be

  158. troubled. You believe in God, believe also. In

  159. my father's house or many mansions, if it were

  160. not so, I would have told you, I go to prepare

  161. a place for you. And if I go to prepare a place

  162. for you, I will come again and receive you to

  163. myself, that where I am, there you may be also.

  164. We are not to be troubled, because if we believe

  165. in God, we must believe in Jesus. You can't believe

  166. in God and not believe in Jesus. If you say you

  167. believe in God but you don't want to follow Jesus,

  168. you don't believe in Jesus, you don't believe

  169. you should follow Jesus, you don't believe you

  170. should obey Jesus, you're just wrong. Jesus is

  171. the only way to end the hostilities between God

  172. and mankind. Now most of you have heard verse

  173. two, right? In my father's house are many mansions.

  174. We've heard that many time It is often referenced

  175. to speak of a kind of heavenly reward And it

  176. is true for the Christian to be absent from the

  177. body is to be present with the Lord But the purpose

  178. of this passage is not that Jesus needs to go

  179. to heaven and use his finished carpentry skills

  180. To complete our mansions of reward So, how do

  181. we understand this? The only other place where

  182. Jesus refers to his father's house is in John

  183. chapter two, beginning in verse 15. And it says

  184. this, and he is speaking about the temple. And

  185. he found in the temple those who sold oxen and

  186. sheep and doves and the money changers doing

  187. business. And he made a whip out of cords and

  188. he drove them out of the temple with the sheep

  189. and the oxen. Poured out the changers of money

  190. and overturned the tables and he said to those

  191. who sold doves take these things away Do not

  192. make my father's house a house of merchandise

  193. Then his disciples remembered that it was written

  194. zeal for your house has eaten me up Remember

  195. the temple was where God's people went to dwell

  196. with their God that is abide with him And God

  197. promised to abide with his people by his grace

  198. and mercy. This word translated as mansion is

  199. better translated as dwelling place. But not

  200. like, you know, you just got a shack. No, it

  201. is the place where relationship is. Where God

  202. dwells with his people. Where God abides. Jesus

  203. is assuring His disciples that His disciples

  204. should not be troubled by His leaving them because

  205. He goes to prepare the dwelling place of the

  206. people of God. See, He can't do that unless He

  207. goes and suffers and dies and is buried and is

  208. resurrected. In Jesus Father's house, there's

  209. a new temple made up of the living stones made

  210. possible by the death and burial resurrection

  211. and ascension of Jesus. Today our epistle reading

  212. was from 1 Peter chapter 2 and it reads this

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

  213. in verse 4. Coming to him, that's God, as a living

  214. stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by

  215. God, that's Jesus, and precious. You also, so

  216. now, Jesus is is chosen by God. He's the stone

  217. and he was rejected by these men who didn't want

  218. to follow God But you also all y 'all Here in

  219. the church as living stones are being built up

  220. a spiritual house a holy priesthood to offer

  221. up spiritual sacrifices Acceptable to God through

  222. Jesus Christ therefore It is also contained in

  223. the scriptures in this passage in in first Peter

  224. Goes on and quotes Isaiah 28 and Psalm 118. But

  225. then it says this, but you are a chosen generation,

  226. a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His, that's

  227. God's own special people, that you may proclaim

  228. the praises of Him who called you out of darkness

  229. into His marvelous light, who were once not a

  230. people, but are now the people of God, who had

  231. not obtained mercy. But have now obtained mercy

  232. Now all this fulfills the promise of God given

  233. to Abraham in general in Genesis 12 where God

  234. points out That in Abraham all the families that

  235. is all the tribes and kindreds of the earth will

  236. be blessed in Abraham As one commentator puts

  237. it Jesus is not merely Just telling the disciples

  238. that they're going to heaven when they die He

  239. is pointing to the fulfillment of the old promise

  240. that God had been had given long ago from the

  241. beginning that he would be our God and That we

  242. would be his people and that we would dwell with

  243. him. This is the fulfillment of the promise Salvation

  244. can be summed up in these words It is being restored

  245. to the eternal communion with God and being made

  246. partakers of the blessedness of God himself as

  247. you live together with others who have been restored

  248. to communion with the living God. The church

  249. is the place where we dwell together with the

  250. living God and thus the church is the fountain

  251. of life to the whole world and this is the purpose

  252. from the beginning that was going to be secured

  253. by Jesus. You know, many of you guys have read

  254. Peter Lightheart's A House for My Name. That's

  255. not just about this house for God's name. It's

  256. not just about the Old Testament temple or tabernacle.

  257. It is about the temple of God built with living

  258. stones, and that is you. And of course we know

  259. that Thomas responds, Lord, we don't know where

  260. you're going. How can we know the way? And Jesus

  261. said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the

  262. life. No one comes to the Father except by me.

  263. And then there's this response about knowing

  264. God the Father. You can't know God the Father

  265. outside of Jesus. You can't find mercy and peace

  266. outside of Jesus and Of course then it just shows

  267. you how confused they were so you got you got

  268. doubting Thomas We're all like, oh, yeah, of

  269. course he doubts but we have Philip who's been

  270. this faithful guy and he said Lord show us the

  271. father and that'll be sufficient and Jesus like

  272. Weren't you listening to me these whole three

  273. years weren't you listening to me earlier today

  274. in the temple when I said That if you've seen

  275. me, you've seen the Father. Speaks to us about

  276. how often we don't understand what God is saying.

  277. Dearly beloved, we need to hear these words of

  278. assurance. When Jesus says, He is the way, the

  279. truth, and the life, those are words of assurance

  280. to us. God's opponents. want to call you to their

  281. most high doctrine of tolerance. Every way is

  282. the right way. Every way is the way to God. Every

  283. religion is the same. That is a lie from the

  284. pit of hell. If you declare Jesus as the only

  285. way to God, the Father, his blessings and eternal

  286. life, the enemies of God will try to shout you

  287. down and shame you. Never dishonored God by being

  288. afraid of those who hate God. Jesus is truly

  289. the only way to God. He is the only truth. And

  290. all those who seek truth outside of Jesus will

  291. never be satisfied. Jesus is the only way to

  292. life. All other paths seeking life die under

  293. the curse of sin, our sin. Be not afraid to declare

  294. Jesus as the only way truth in life Even if it

  295. looks grim even if it's hard or hostile around

  296. you We serve the true living God who because

  297. of the work of Christ Jesus makes our concerns

  298. his concerns You realize that you know, we have

  299. these prayers up here and I know sometimes they

  300. seem long But we are elevated into the presence

  301. of the Almighty in this worship service together

  302. Where we are asking Jesus? Seated at the right

  303. hand of the Father who makes intercession for

  304. us to whisper into the ear of God the Father

  305. on our behalf and truly God the Father makes

  306. our concerns his concerns and for the sake of

  307. Jesus God the Father will protect and provide

  308. and deliver us from all evil consider Romans

  309. 8 beginning verse 28 It says and we know that

  310. all things work together for good For those who

  311. love God and for those who are called according

  312. to his purpose Now we hear that I'm gonna read

  313. it a little more of this But but we see this

  314. a lot of times and we just get doubtful Well,

  315. I don't know my call to his purpose Yes, you

  316. are right now in the circumstances. God is giving

  317. you And we say I don't know how these things

  318. work together In Jesus the way the truth and

  319. the life What is this it says it says for those

  320. who love God for those who are called according

  321. to his purpose and it says for him He foreknew

  322. he also predestined to be conformed to the image

  323. of his son That he might be the firstborn among

  324. many brethren Moreover whom he predestined these

  325. he also called whom he called he justified and

  326. whom he justified He glorified first in Jesus.

  327. And then what we do is glorifying God as we worship

  328. him As we rest in him as we believe and obey

  329. him You see as his people God never leaves us

  330. or forsakes us. We have no reason to fear To

  331. despair or to be anxious or agitated Our sovereign

  332. Lord has placed his son on the throne and is

  333. giving him the nations for his inheritance these

  334. converted peoples Including you are the living

  335. stones of the eternal temple founded on the cornerstone

  336. of Jesus The book of Ephesians in chapter 2 beginning

  337. verse 19 tells us this now therefore you are

  338. no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow

  339. citizens with the saints and members of the household

  340. of God, having been built on the foundation of

  341. the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself

  342. being the chief cornerstone, in whom the whole

  343. building being fitted together grows into a holy

  344. temple in the Lord, and it's ever expanding,

  345. many rooms, in whom you are also being built

  346. together for a dwelling place, the place where

  347. God abides. in the spirit. Jesus here in John

  348. 14 is letting you see the ultimate purpose of

  349. his work through his death and resurrection and

  350. ascension. That is the outpouring of his spirit.

  351. The new temple of God is going to be established

  352. in the world and is now established. The glorified

  353. temple made of living stones made up of his people

  354. who were filled with his spirit and who live

  355. for His glory. We do these things and we do it

  356. to honor God. And we can only do it by the power

  357. of the Spirit and we only have that because of

  358. the work of Jesus. Jesus is completing the work

  359. the Father has given Him to do and in so doing

  360. He brings to reality the vision that God gave

  361. Ezekiel in Ezekiel 47. There God shows the prophet

  362. Ezekiel a new temple. with living waters that

  363. flow out over the threshold. And what do they

  364. do? They flow out, and they get broader, and

  365. they get deeper. And it says it spreads over

  366. the earth. This river of light flows from the

  367. dwelling place where God abides with his people

  368. to the world. And it says in Ezekiel 47, beginning

  369. of verse 7, when I returned, There along the

  370. bank of the river were many trees on one side

  371. and the other. And then he said to me, this water

  372. flows towards the eastern region, goes down into

  373. the valley, and enters the sea. And when it reaches

  374. the sea, its waters are healed. Now, what's in

  375. the sea? In the scriptures, the people of Israel

  376. are the land. And the Gentiles are the sea. So

  377. this is speaking about how the river of life

  378. is flowing out of the temple, beginning with

  379. the Jews, but then going to the whole world through

  380. the Gentiles. This reminds us of Pentecost that's

  381. coming up in a few weeks. And it says this, there

  382. will be a very great multitude of fish because

  383. these waters go, therefore they will be healed

  384. and everything will live wherever the river goes.

  385. And it shall be that fishermen will stand by

  386. it from Engede to Engellum. and they will be

  387. places for spreading their nets, and their fish

  388. are the same kinds of the fish of the great sea,

  389. exceedingly many, a house with many rooms, this

  390. great and marvelous temple. But its swamps and

  391. marshes will not be healed. All those that reject

  392. Jesus, all those that want to try, it says they'll

  393. be given to the salt waters, those waters that

  394. you can't drink, that will destroy you. And along

  395. the bank of the river on this side and that will

  396. grow all kinds of trees used for food and their

  397. leaves will not wither and their fruit will not

  398. fail. They will bear fruit every month because

  399. the water flows from the sanctuary. And of course,

  400. and we see this in Revelation 20 and 21, the

  401. age of the church. Their fruit will be for food

  402. and their leaves medicine. This new temple is

  403. solidified as the true temple by the destruction

  404. of the temple in Jerusalem at 70 AD. This picture

  405. was of course of this new temple the glorious

  406. temple that is going to be the fountain of life

  407. For the world because of the body of Christ and

  408. the entire creation is going to be filled with

  409. God's glory and become the holy dwelling place

  410. of God the holy mansion that temple that God

  411. is building and that's the picture that Jesus

  412. tells us of the Church of the Living God The

  413. creation will be filled with life, with the life

  414. of God through His church in Christ Jesus, and

  415. the glory and the blessedness that flows from

  416. it. Now, you might be saying, this is all great.

  417. I feel somewhat assured. I kind of know the path.

  418. Well, what in the world does this mean for how

  419. I live? It's very important that we understand

  420. this. This is practically how it works out. Number

  421. one, we come together and we worship God beyond

  422. time. Hear God's word respond if you're new to

  423. what we're doing. There's a call them response

  424. going God speaks and We respond God speaks and

  425. we respond We worship God and we fellowship together

  426. The strength of the church is not just here it

  427. emanates from here from this river flowing out

  428. of the doors See when you receive that blessing

  429. at the end If we could change the architecture,

  430. there'd be a blue carpet going out the back door.

  431. So you guys would understand, you're flowing

  432. in the flow, the river of the spirit of life

  433. going out to your outposts. But we need to fellowship

  434. during the week, not just in our household, but

  435. with one another. Sundays are not enough for

  436. your fellowship. We have to faithfully learn

  437. how to serve. One another in this world. How

  438. can you learn how to serve if you're not talking

  439. to people except for five minutes on a Sunday?

  440. Have people over go to their house Listen, I'm

  441. gonna tell you something. I have a tactic or

  442. strategy Right every one of you with every one

  443. of you. You're all kind of different Right. I

  444. know that when I talk to you I've learned different

  445. things about you. What does it take for me to

  446. get past? that I'm fine, everything's OK, the

  447. sky is blue and the weather nice. Right? For

  448. every one of you, it requires something different.

  449. We have to learn one another. We're not going

  450. to be able to serve and care for one another

  451. if we don't get in each other's lives. Make phone

  452. calls, invite people out for coffee, get your

  453. kids together. Then we're going to do all this.

  454. so that we can bear one another's burdens and

  455. rejoice together and mourn together. And in that,

  456. we'll be able to give thanks and pray for one

  457. another. Right? We can give thanks in the rejoicing.

  458. We can give thanks in the hardship. We can encourage

  459. one another. And we can pray with real meaning

  460. because we know what's going on in somebody else's

  461. life. And Jesus will get into this in the next

  462. section of this passage, the next paragraph,

  463. but we have to trust and obey God's word. Those

  464. are the things that we do. That's how we practically

  465. live this out as the new temple, bringing the

  466. rivers of life to the world. As we do all these

  467. things, the life and blessedness is restored

  468. to the world because you are demonstrating how

  469. human beings are to live. Jesus is the only way

  470. to true life and as one commentator puts it as

  471. We live in the way in these ways and we give

  472. the reason for the hope that is within us God

  473. blesses our words and our example by his spirit

  474. and he makes us fountains of life to the world

  475. Dearly beloved our blessed. Hope is not in the

  476. return of Jesus at the last day Not just in the

  477. return of Jesus at the last day and not dying

  478. and going to heaven When we die but being united

  479. to the one who rules overall and abides That

  480. is dwells in an ending communion with us And

  481. it's in these words we come to the last few verses

  482. in our passage Again we have most assuredly truly

  483. truly I say to you, he who believes in me, the

  484. works that I do, he will do also. And greater

  485. works than these, he will do because I go to

  486. my father. Remember, we can do these greater

  487. works because he left them. He suffered and died.

  488. It was buried. It was resurrected. See, now these

  489. words mean so much more because they are looking

  490. through the lens of the resurrection. And whatever

  491. you ask in my name. That I will do that the father

  492. may be glorified in the Sun If you ask anything

  493. in my name, I will do it and here's the qualification

  494. When we go to God and we make prayers to God

  495. and we make these petitions. Are we doing it?

  496. For God's glory What are our motives if we ask

  497. him for something and it's God's glory He's gonna

  498. do it Jesus doesn't just leave us here with the

  499. dream to aim for But with certainty he says if

  500. you believe in him That is living each day see

  501. believing in him is living each day knowing that

  502. Jesus is the only way to truly be relieved from

  503. all fear anxiety and dread of your sin Jesus

  504. is truly the only way to be reconciled to the

  505. Father to find love and peace and joy and certainty.

  506. Not just a certainty that you will dwell with

  507. Him in eternity when you die by going to heaven,

  508. but that He has plans for you here on the earth

  509. right now in all your relationships and in your

  510. words and in your deeds. Jesus does not leave

  511. you weak and uncertain that his kingdom temple

  512. will be built doesn't leave you weak and He knows

  513. that as he builds this that the knowledge of

  514. the glory of the Lord will fill the earth as

  515. the waters cover the sea and He tells us Not

  516. leaving us weak because he tells us that anything

  517. we ask in his name for his name sake He will

  518. do it Because Jesus went away in the death and

  519. resurrection and ascension the spirit was sent

  520. to us with certainty So we are we are able to

  521. not be troubled Not be anxious not be agitated

  522. because we are in Christ Jesus God abides he

  523. dwells in his temple the church, all y 'all.

  524. God provides all that its people need. And of

  525. course, all of this brings new light, sheds new

  526. light on our call to worship this morning out

  527. of Psalm 31. I want you to hear a couple of verses

  528. here. But as for me, I trust in you, O Lord.

  529. I say, you are my God. My times are in your hand

  530. deliver me from the hand of my enemies and from

  531. those who persecute me Make your face shine upon

  532. your servant. Save me for your mercy sake. Oh

  533. Love the Lord all you saints for the Lord preserves

  534. the faithful and He fully repays the proud person

  535. be of good courage He shall strengthen your heart

  536. all you who hope in the Lord Let us pray Heavenly

  537. father we give thanks to you for your great victory

  538. that Jesus has Brought to us and we praise you

  539. that you have seated him at your right hand far

  540. above all principalities and powers And above

  541. every name that can be named so that at the name

  542. of Jesus every knee should bow Of things in heaven

  543. and of things on earth and things under the earth

  544. that every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord

  545. Father help us to be a people faithful to do

  546. everything not fearing life or death or anything

  547. else But rather fearing you and living with joy

  548. and gladness as your servants Hear our prayers

  549. and help us now for Jesus sake amen
