  1. Amen. Amen. Thank you, Jeff. And praise team

  2. as well. Thank you for leading us in song today.

  3. And Jeff, thanks for being willing to share the

  4. Passion Week series. And especially on today

  5. of all days. The triumphal, what are we calling

  6. it, TM? Grant had a new TM, new trademark. We'll

  7. see. But no, I'm grateful. I think it's going

  8. to be a great series. And it's not because of

  9. us. It's not because of humans. It's because

  10. of the source material. As Jeff shared, there

  11. is no greater topic to focus on from the pulpit

  12. than the gospel of Jesus Christ. Amen. Every

  13. believer needs to be encouraged. Every unbeliever

  14. needs to be hearing about this good news in Christ.

  15. As Jeff was reading the Valley of Vision, were

  16. you listening well? I know it's old English.

  17. But were you listening well? The appeal for responding

  18. rightly to the gospel call. Those truths are

  19. the same. The human heart remains the same. The

  20. appeal that you heard in that reading, it is

  21. not very different from the disciples who struggled

  22. to comprehend what this gospel would mean for

  23. their lives, especially in the face of Jesus'

  24. impending departure during that Passion Week.

  25. That's what we're going to pick up today. with

  26. the disciples being prepared for the cross. Now,

  27. let's think about it for a moment. The disciples

  28. were with Jesus roughly three and a half -ish

  29. years, right? Many of you grew up hearing Jesus

  30. saying, follow me, to the fishermen, right? Now,

  31. whether you read that in John chapter one, Matthew

  32. chapter four, Mark chapter one, Luke chapter

  33. five, all four of the gospels, they record. many

  34. ministry moments that Jesus had on this earth

  35. with his disciples. I think sometimes during

  36. that earthly ministry, though, those three and

  37. a half years, people often focus a lot on his

  38. miracles, a lot on the works that Jesus did.

  39. Think about what John said, though. You remember

  40. our Gospel of John series, and we titled it very

  41. purposefully, That You May Believe. that you

  42. may believe and that in believing you may have

  43. eternal life. That's what John says, why these

  44. things have been written and recorded. I'm going

  45. to make a case today that Jesus was here to be

  46. with his disciples more than he was here to perform

  47. miracles. Gasp. Ah, think about that. Now the

  48. miracles, they validated his message, but the

  49. message was for what? For people. For people.

  50. And that's a critical point. Jesus didn't just

  51. show up and wonder who would follow him. He came

  52. at an appointed time to an appointed people with

  53. an appointed purpose. You see the intentionality

  54. there? He was not with his disciples as a result

  55. of random chance, like he just shows up and,

  56. I guess these are the guys I got with me. He

  57. shows up at the right time, the right place,

  58. to the right people with the right purpose. It

  59. was divine intention, not random chance. And

  60. the disciples who responded faithfully to Jesus'

  61. call to follow him, they were loved. They were

  62. chosen. They were protected by the Savior. But

  63. even in that special position that they had,

  64. to be those first ones to walk with Jesus, they

  65. still struggled. How many of you remember Peter's

  66. calling? You can raise your hand in church. It's

  67. allowed. If you don't remember, I'm going to

  68. assume that I'm talking to the majority of you

  69. now. You don't remember, I'll remind you. Okay,

  70. Jeff remembers. Thank you, Jeff. Now, I'll be

  71. honest. Few things in the Gospels get me teary

  72. -eyed like that event for me. I know there's

  73. a lot of extra biblical oddities in that Chosen

  74. TV series, so I'm not recommending it. But one

  75. thing I think they captured well was that moment.

  76. I think they captured that moment well. But for

  77. the real event, you can turn to Luke 5 if you

  78. want, or you just listen. as I tell you about

  79. it. The disciples, they've been, they weren't

  80. disciples at that moment, just to be clear. These

  81. men, they'd been fishing all night. They'd been

  82. laboring, working hard. They're weary, they're

  83. tired, and have they caught much? No. But I don't

  84. think it was just about fishing. They've been

  85. waiting. God's people have been waiting for the

  86. Messiah. Hardworking day laborers, Jews like

  87. Peter, they wanted to be rescued. They were growing

  88. weary. God had been silent for so many years.

  89. His people had been so disobedient. Now they're

  90. suffering under Roman rule. Sure, they're back

  91. from the deportations. They're in the promised

  92. land. But this cannot be the goodness that was

  93. told to them that was coming. This is not eternal

  94. glory. Now, it's in that season of tumult and

  95. uncertainty that Jesus arrives on the scene.

  96. And the context of Peter's calling was Jesus

  97. preaching to a crowd around the shore of Galilee.

  98. After so many years of God's silence, you have

  99. first John the Baptist, right? John the Baptist

  100. comes. Then comes this teacher, this rabbi. And

  101. he captivated people with his explanations about

  102. God and God's kingdom. And so the crowd is listening.

  103. And these fishermen who'd been working all night,

  104. who were now very tired, they're listening to

  105. this amazing teacher. They didn't know him as

  106. Lord. They didn't know him as Savior yet, but

  107. they were captivated. And so Jesus gets into

  108. Peter's boat because he's preaching to the crowd.

  109. And Peter's willing because he's listening to

  110. this teacher who's unlike any other. He's never

  111. heard a teacher like this. Jesus tells him then,

  112. put down your net. And Peter doesn't say, sure.

  113. He doubts. He's still willing, but he doubts.

  114. Verse 5 out of Luke 5 says, Simon answered and

  115. said, Master, we labored all night. We caught

  116. nothing. But at your word, I will let down the

  117. nets. Now, even in his willingness to let down

  118. the net, he's not expecting a catch. Can you

  119. see that? He's like, I'll do it. Nothing's going

  120. to come up. That's his heart disposition before

  121. the teacher. He's trying to appease him, but

  122. he doesn't really believe him or trust him. Now

  123. we know what happens with that great catch of

  124. fish and the people are marveling at the work,

  125. but Simon Peter has a unique response. Instead

  126. of marveling, instead of just being in awe, Peter

  127. broke. They catch the fish and he falls down

  128. to his knees. And look at verse eight, Luke 5,

  129. eight. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell down

  130. at Jesus' knees saying, go away from me, Lord,

  131. for I am a sinful man. Think about Peter. When

  132. witnessing the power of God, Peter didn't go

  133. and ask for his power. Peter didn't ask for any

  134. special blessing. He saw something miraculous

  135. and what did he do? He confessed his sinfulness.

  136. That was his response. The simple act of multiplying

  137. fish revealed to Peter the identity of who Christ

  138. was. His response was humility, shame of sin,

  139. a recognition that holiness was not part of his

  140. identity. What did Jesus say to him when he says,

  141. go away from me? Did Jesus say, you're right.

  142. Get away from me. Did Jesus say, come back to

  143. me when you're clean? I mean, he'd be working

  144. on it. He's probably pretty sweaty. Let's be

  145. honest. No, he didn't say that. Jesus gave hope.

  146. He gave a new calling. He told them not to fear.

  147. The other gospels record Jesus as saying, follow

  148. me. Follow me. I'll give you a new purpose. We're

  149. not going to be fishing for fish. We're going

  150. to be fishing for men. And so my statement earlier

  151. that I think the coming of Jesus was far more

  152. about people than miracles holds true. He's not

  153. fishing for miracles. The miracle of the fish

  154. is for the people. That sets the stage for John

  155. 14. Because these disciples in various ways,

  156. in various moments, they all saw the majesty

  157. of the Lord on display. They walked with him

  158. day by day. They ate with him. They witnessed

  159. many other things. You know, John 21, the end

  160. of the gospel says, the world itself could not

  161. contain the books that could be written about

  162. his time with the disciples. That's just a little

  163. bit of stuff, right? You get the sense of how

  164. much was happening? So I want to impress upon

  165. you the nature. of that relationship between

  166. Jesus and the disciples, they were so close and

  167. so much happened, more than we even have recorded.

  168. Yet no matter how much time Jesus spent with

  169. his disciples, no matter how intentional he was

  170. to teach them, day and night, they still struggled

  171. to trust him. They still were often confused.

  172. You wonder why? Because they're human just like

  173. us. They could be seated literally across from

  174. the Savior in the same room, listening to him

  175. teach. They could even be leaning up against

  176. him, touching him, and still struggle to comprehend

  177. his statements and instructions. Think about

  178. that. Think how many of us have said in our hard

  179. moments, in our hearts, in our prayers, that

  180. if only we could be with Jesus, we would understand.

  181. That if only he would reveal himself to us in

  182. some way that would make everything okay. Friends,

  183. the presence of Christ, even for the disciples,

  184. it was not a surefire safeguard for hope and

  185. for trust. We need to caution our hearts so that

  186. we don't think that Christ's presence is more

  187. precious than his purpose. The nearness of the

  188. Lord is not the only thing. The Lord, he is the

  189. one. That might be hard for us to comprehend.

  190. We're going to see more of this and dig in more

  191. to understand the nature of the struggle. Several

  192. times leading up to the crucifixion, really throughout

  193. his entire ministry, Jesus predicted and foretold

  194. of his impending departure, of his need to suffer,

  195. to die. And it was puzzling for the disciples.

  196. They didn't understand. And it wasn't until that

  197. final week, what we call Passion Week, that it

  198. really started to set in. Because before it was

  199. just down the road. You know, kick the can down

  200. the road. Sure, Jesus is saying that. I don't

  201. really understand what it means. Okay, it's coming.

  202. It's coming. It's coming. Now we're at Passion

  203. Week. He's like, it's here. It's here. Now they're

  204. starting to get a little worried. It's not making

  205. the same impact that it was before. Before it

  206. was a glancing blow. Now it's starting to pierce.

  207. Starting to set in and trouble is overtaking

  208. the disciples' hearts. Jesus was faithful to

  209. declare to them what was going to happen, but

  210. they couldn't fathom what needed to take place

  211. because we're human. We have our ideas about

  212. who the Savior should be, what the Messiah should

  213. be, what a king should be. And Jesus breaks all

  214. of that. But we shouldn't blame them. We would

  215. have been no different. And that's what I'd like

  216. to show you this morning from God's word, that

  217. we have so many similarities with those disciples

  218. leading up. to Jesus's crucifixion and his death.

  219. And then once we put ourselves in their sandals,

  220. then I think we can focus on why he said that

  221. he is the way. So grab your Bibles and let's

  222. turn to John 13. I know you're like, why aren't

  223. we in John 14? Just go with me for a sec. I know

  224. I've set the stage, but we need a little bit

  225. of context because Jesus didn't just speak in

  226. John 14 out of nowhere. It came from the context

  227. of the conversation that was taking place. in

  228. the upper room. Now throughout chapters 13 through

  229. 17 of John's gospel, we have what's commonly

  230. referred to as the upper room discourse. It's

  231. that time when Jesus was with his disciples celebrating

  232. Passover. During that time, we call it the last

  233. supper that occurs in that upper room as well.

  234. Now John's gospel contains the most testimony

  235. about that time. And think about it. It's the

  236. final gathering that Jesus has with his disciples

  237. before his death. Don't worry. I know it's Palm

  238. Sunday. We're jumping ahead. Just track with

  239. me. You're like, wait, aren't we talking about

  240. Palm? Yes, we're in the upper room. John 14.

  241. So just go with me. We'll finish on Palm Sunday.

  242. I'll tell you that. Okay. We'll finish on Palm

  243. Sunday. We're going to read in verses beginning

  244. in verse 33. of chapter 13, and we're gonna go

  245. all the way to John chapter 14, verse six. Let's

    John 14 chapter mention

  246. do this, though. Let's go ahead and stand for

  247. the reading of God's word. And you can follow

  248. along as I read. John chapter 13, beginning in

    John 13 chapter mention

  249. verse 33. Little children, I'm with you a little

  250. while longer. You will seek me, and as I said

  251. to the Jews, now I also say to you, where I'm

  252. going, you cannot come. A new commandment I give

  253. to you, that you love one another even as I have

  254. loved you, that you also love one another. By

  255. this, all will know that you are my disciples,

  256. if you have love for one another. Simon Peter

  257. said to him, Lord, where are you going? And Jesus

  258. answered, where I go, you cannot follow me now,

  259. but you will follow later. Peter said to him,

  260. Lord, why can I not follow you right now? I will

  261. lay down my life for you. Jesus answered, will

  262. you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly,

  263. I say to you, a rooster will not crow until you

  264. deny me three times. Do not let your heart be

  265. troubled. Believe in God. Believe also in me.

  266. In my Father's house are many dwelling places.

  267. If it were not so, I would have told you. For

  268. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go

  269. and prepare a place for you, I will come again

  270. and receive you to myself, that where I am, there

  271. you may be also. And you know the way where I

  272. am going. Thomas said to him, Lord, we do not

  273. know where you are going. How do we know the

  274. way? Jesus said to him, I am the way and the

  275. truth and the life. No one comes to the Father

  276. but through me. Amen. You may be seated. As I

  277. said earlier, my aim this morning is to first

  278. show our similarities with the disciples and

  279. then we'll focus on Jesus as the way. There are

  280. so many good studies on the identity of Christ,

  281. doctrinal positions on salvation. This is one

  282. of those plugs I can give Jeff at Oak Hill Bible.

  283. He will lead you in a good way if you want to

  284. know more about the identity of Christ from those

  285. great works. But our focus this morning is much

  286. more narrow. It is much more narrow this morning.

  287. We are focusing on the context of Jesus' statement

  288. in the upper room in John 14, specifically what

  289. led up to him stating that he is the way, the

  290. truth, the life. And we're zeroing in on Jesus

  291. as the way. And there are three ways that I see

  292. the disciples missing Jesus. Necessitating that

  293. response from him where he says, I am the way.

  294. And we're going to cover all three by the time

  295. we wrap up today. Now in verse 33 of chapter

  296. 13, did you see what Jesus said? He said, where

  297. I'm going, you cannot come. And he says the same

  298. thing again in verse 36. And in between those

  299. two statements about his departure, that he's

  300. going somewhere, the disciples not being able

  301. to follow him, Jesus gives a new commandment.

  302. A new commandment. And he'll explain that more

  303. in depth later that same evening. What's that

  304. new commandment? Love one another. What do we

  305. say at the end of our services? You know that

  306. one better than the new commandment. We might

  307. need to switch that. Love one another. You know

  308. what's interesting though? He gives a new commandment,

  309. but did the disciples ask about that new commandment?

  310. Now, instead of questioning Jesus about that

  311. new commandment, Peter says, Lord, where are

  312. you going? So the Lord replies. He even gives

  313. a distinction of time, right? And his second

  314. response is, where I'm going, you cannot follow

  315. me now, but you will follow later. Now, again,

  316. Peter could have asked about that new commandment.

  317. I mean, how often does a new commandment come?

  318. Is that a normal thing? Like Jesus just throwing

  319. around new commandments all the time? I don't

  320. think so if you read through the Gospels. But

  321. Peter's laser focused on not being able to follow

  322. Jesus right now. Then he gets bold. I'm going

  323. to lay down my life for you. Now, we need to

  324. not be unfairly hard on Peter, right? Yeah, he's

  325. the bold one. He's the one who often has that

  326. foot -shaped mouth, right? But he's also the

  327. first one to declare Jesus to be the Messiah.

  328. As I shared earlier in the calling of the disciples,

  329. he was the one who humbled himself before the

  330. Lord and recognized his sinfulness. He was the

  331. one. Peter's hubris, though, it's a lesson for

  332. us all. Paul says, 1 Corinthians 10, we'll be

  333. there in 2028. Therefore, let him who thinks

  334. he stands take heed, lest he... And the wonderful

  335. thing is that Peter eventually learned, you can

  336. read in his epistles, what changed in his outlook

  337. as a disciple of Christ. And I'm teasing, Jeff,

  338. we'll be there whenever we're ready. I would

  339. be excited if it's 2028. I'm in it for however

  340. long Lord has. Now here in John 13, Jesus shares

  341. something though that must have shocked and shook

  342. Peter. He publicly questions his allegiance.

  343. He tells Peter that he's going to deny his master

  344. not once, not twice, but three times. And how

  345. quick? Before the next morning. Think about that.

  346. Peter's saying, I'm going to die for you, Lord.

  347. And Jesus is like, no. Before tomorrow morning,

  348. you're going to deny me three times. Now, Mark

  349. 14 gives a little more information about the

  350. disciples' response to this. He tells us that

  351. Peter and the disciples, they kept insisting

  352. that they would follow Jesus even to the death.

  353. So Jesus tells Peter this, and then Peter and

  354. the disciples are like, no, no, no, we really

  355. would. We would die for you. We're going to live

  356. for you, whatever you need. But we know how it

  357. turned out, don't we? We know the end of that

  358. part of the story. Peter would indeed deny knowing

  359. Jesus three times, would he not? Before the rooster

  360. crowed, like Jesus said. And then he would weep

  361. bitterly. Because he turned his back on the Savior

  362. of his soul in the most trying hour for Jesus.

  363. That's what happened. Do you see yourself in

  364. Peter? Think about it. Externally professing

  365. faith unto death. I'll die with you. Inwardly

  366. though. Struggling with a feeble faith at times.

  367. You fear earthly consequences for things more

  368. than you fear the Lord who is over. I think in

  369. that moment, Peter made it more about his work,

  370. his response, than the work of the Lord. Don't

  371. we do that as well? We struggle to comprehend

  372. that Jesus alone saves. We try to insert our

  373. own merit. We say with our mouths, our songs,

  374. our sermons, only Jesus. And we say in our hearts,

  375. but I've done this and I've done that. I deserve

  376. this. Like Peter, we can make much of ourselves.

  377. Sadly, in response to the great things the Lord

  378. has done, we make our lives about what we think

  379. we should do. We fill our time with all manner

  380. of vapid things. We try to justify the few holy

  381. Christ -like things we do with those. As if a

  382. few moments of service every week is going to

  383. erase all the selfishness that happens throughout

  384. the week. Friends, we don't just need part of

  385. us washed clean. We need a new heart. We need

  386. resurrection from life to death. What an amazing

  387. truth that Jesus provides his merit for us. The

  388. way forward when we miss Jesus and we make things

  389. about what we've done or we think we can do is

  390. to go back to that first response of Peter when

  391. Jesus called him in Luke 5. The prayer should

  392. be something like this. Lord, I'm a sinner. I'm

  393. unworthy of your presence. Nothing I can do can

  394. atone for my sin. Rescue me. Save me. Redeem

  395. me. Give me a heart of flesh. Renew a steadfast

  396. spirit within me. Guide me by your word. Strengthen

  397. me by your spirit. Encourage me by your people.

  398. That should be our response every time that we

  399. are tempted to miss Jesus for our own personal

  400. merit. What a grace, though, that we're not judged

  401. by what we do. For those who are in Christ, you're

  402. judged by what he has done. If you're not in

  403. Christ, that judgment stands square on your shoulders.

  404. That's the grace. But think of this. Having walked

  405. with Jesus for all those years, as loyal as Peter

  406. was, even Peter didn't have the ability to remain

  407. steadfast to Jesus during the trial and crucifixion.

  408. Even Peter. We would not have fared any better.

  409. We need something greater than our works. We

  410. need someone greater than our works. We need

  411. a savior. After Jesus rebuked Peter, and even

  412. after he and the other disciples were insisting

  413. that they were willing to follow Jesus unto death,

  414. it became apparent to the Lord that the disciples

  415. were troubled. Their self -confidence, it was

  416. shaky at best, and rightfully so. Because if

  417. Jesus said that the boldest of them was going

  418. to deny him three times before the next morning,

  419. would any of them do any better? So in response,

  420. you know, you can just get a sense that they're

  421. just blustering. No, no, no, we will, we will,

  422. we will, surely we will. No, no, they won't.

  423. Jesus told his disciples in John 14, 1, don't

  424. let your hearts be troubled. He saw their resolve

  425. for what it was. They had confidence in the flesh.

  426. They didn't have conviction and faith. Now the

  427. answer from Jesus was to deal with a heart troubled

  428. by his departure was simple. Replace your fear

  429. of man with right faith in God. That's the answer.

  430. Replace your fear of man with the right faith

  431. in God. And now that faith in God is the same

  432. as faith in who? Jesus. Now, I know you might

  433. say this is just too simple. Don't be troubled.

  434. Just believe, right? I can't tell you how many

  435. people I've sat with who have wrestled with that

  436. thought. I can't tell you how many times I've

  437. prayed with, encouraged, walked with people through

  438. scripture. 20 plus years in ministry, I've seen

  439. similarities among all kinds of people. The issue

  440. here in John 14, one, is that Jesus is gonna

  441. depart. And the disciples aren't so sure that

  442. everything's going to be okay. That's the tension.

  443. Is everything going to be okay? They don't want

  444. him to go. They don't know what's going to happen

  445. next. So that idea of just believing, there's

  446. a tension there. Even though Jesus had already

  447. shared that he has a place for them, an eternal

  448. dwelling with the Father, that he's going to

  449. go get things ready. Just think about that for

  450. a moment. You put yourself, just try to bring

  451. the analogy down to your, to our level. It's

  452. like a friend who's telling you, hey, before

  453. you come over, I'm going to go back home and

  454. I'm going to make sure that I have clean sheets,

  455. a towel. I'm going to get some snacks for you.

  456. And then, and then, right, then you can come

  457. over. And I'm not trying to make that goofy,

  458. but do you understand how very basic that is

  459. for the Lord to say, I'm going to go and get

  460. this ready. And then when it's ready, then I'm

  461. going to bring you. He says in verse 14 too,

  462. he's going to get the place ready. And in 14

  463. .3, the very next verse, he says, I'm going to

  464. come back and receive you myself. So he's not

  465. even just going to go to his house and get things

  466. ready and then be at the front door waiting for

  467. you to arrive. He's going to go to the house,

  468. get things ready, and then he's going to come

  469. and get you and make sure you get there. He's

  470. going to bring you to his place. And so he says,

  471. don't worry. Don't worry. Don't be troubled.

  472. He has the confidence that you won't get lost.

  473. So you don't need that confidence. You need your

  474. confidence to be in him. And he tells his disciples,

  475. you know where the eternal resting place is.

  476. But in verse 5, Thomas, like Peter, like the

  477. disciples, like us, he expresses his trouble.

  478. Lord, we don't know where you're going. How do

  479. we know the way? Now, Thomas struggled more than

  480. that moment. Some of you know Thomas, Doubting

  481. Thomas, as we sometimes call him, right? He was

  482. a disciple after Jesus' resurrection. He would

  483. maybe boldly or foolishly, depending on the way

  484. you look at it, claim that he would not believe

  485. that Jesus rose from the dead unless he felt

  486. the pierced side and the pierced hands. You know,

  487. poor Thomas. Let's not be too hard on him either.

  488. If we're not going to be hard on Peter, let's

  489. not be too hard on Thomas. He's like that guy

  490. who just always wants the GPS location, you know?

  491. He doesn't want to just be pointed in the right

  492. direction. He doesn't just want the compass.

  493. He wants the detailed, turn -by -turn directions

  494. for how to get to Jesus. Now, maybe you're blessed

  495. and you're not directionally challenged. I mean,

  496. but how many of you appreciate a good map set?

  497. I do. I think that's a grace. You don't have

  498. to raise your hand. We trust. Especially if you've

  499. never been there, especially in LA. Good grief.

  500. Now, I'm old enough. to remember that when I

  501. learned to drive in those early years, we had

  502. those printed Thomas guides. Yeah, all right.

  503. Some of you know that. Thank you. But it wasn't

  504. for every city, right? Like, not every city had

  505. one. So I grew up in a small town. We didn't

  506. have one. So that was a whole other thing. But

  507. I had it when I got out of the small town. I

  508. think MapQuest was a thing back then, too. Remember

  509. going on MapQuest and you inputted things? You

  510. printed out. So you had like 18 pages with like

  511. three turns on each one. It was... It was rough.

  512. What a day, right? What a day. Now imagine in

  513. that day, if you got lost, whoo, gasp, you had

  514. to ask somebody. You had to talk to a human.

  515. Wow. Or you didn't, and then you just stayed

  516. lost, or you were blessed and you eventually

  517. found the place. You got back on track. Back

  518. in that day, you couldn't text someone, and you

  519. couldn't call them either because cell phones

  520. weren't even a thing. I think I got one after

  521. I learned how to drive. but we weren't even allowed

  522. to text on it because texting was like a per

  523. cost thing. It was lame. Now it's like free text

  524. and data, all that. Now, people didn't keep the

  525. phone next to them, even if you did have a cell

  526. phone. It's not like it lived on them like today.

  527. It's in our pockets all the time. Back then,

  528. it was the landline in the house. If they weren't

  529. sitting by it, heaven forbid, you don't get a

  530. hold of them, right? Imagine such a day. I can

  531. understand Thomas's desire for a step -by -step

  532. direction to the Lord. I think all of us, you

  533. know, to a degree, want that. I'll be honest,

  534. to this day, I use GPS for everything. My wife

  535. teases me. She's over here not judging me because

  536. I use it even for places that I've been, even

  537. places around town. Anyways, enough about me.

  538. Now, Thomas' statement, though, that they don't

  539. know the way, that wasn't exactly truthful. In

  540. fact, it was a bold -faced, disobedient lie.

  541. Now, I'm not being harsh on Thomas. I'm just

  542. being accurate. Look at what Jesus said right

  543. before Thomas in John chapter 14, verse 4. And

    John 14:4

  544. you know the way where I am going. Let me ask,

  545. was Jesus lying? Did he tell the disciples they

  546. knew the way, but in reality they didn't know

  547. the way? Thomas' answer, he essentially tells

  548. Jesus he's a liar. Thomas argues with the Son

  549. of God. He tells the Savior of souls that he's

  550. wrong. That's what Thomas did. How often do we

  551. do the same? What about when we're uncertain

  552. about what God's going to do with our temporary

  553. future? With our trials, with our conflicts,

  554. with our suffering? Don't we often say we don't

  555. know what he's doing? Boldly at times? Don't

  556. we demand to know the details of our lives? The

  557. turn -by -turn directions for salvation rather

  558. than entrusting ourselves? to the true north

  559. compass that is Christ himself? Like Thomas,

  560. don't we demand proofs for God's work in our

  561. lives? Lord, give me a sign that I'm going the

  562. right way. I know we're all tempted like Thomas.

  563. We'd all rather see before believing, would we

  564. not? I get it. I'm tempted too. Wouldn't life

  565. be wonderfully easy if we had a roadmap to all

  566. the bumps and the turns displayed before us?

  567. We can go to the next slide, but I think we do

  568. often miss Jesus because we are so very demanding

  569. of all the details. Maybe if we had all those

  570. turn -by -turn directions, maybe life would be

  571. easier. I don't know. You know, I actually don't

  572. think it would be. If you knew what was going

  573. to happen, then you'd fret and worry over that.

  574. And then you spend all your time knowing what's

  575. going to happen, worrying about what's going

  576. to happen, but you can't stop it from happening?

  577. Would that really be better? You're like, maybe.

  578. I don't know. You know what it would lack, though?

  579. It would lack dependence. It would lack dependence.

  580. When we chase the details, we miss depending

  581. on the Savior. He never promised to easily chart

  582. our lives. What he did promise was to never leave

  583. us, to never forsake us. He promised that those

  584. whom he saves would be saved until the end. He

  585. promised that he would rescue those who humbly

  586. call upon his name for salvation. He promised

  587. redemption for the repentant. And none of that,

  588. none of that requires that we know all the details

  589. of our lives. Like Thomas, we need to learn that

  590. The compass of Christ is more important to believing

  591. than the chart of life's twists and turns. This

  592. is why the cure for a troubled heart is trust,

  593. belief, faith. Christ calls us to believe in

  594. him and to believe in God, to depend on him as

  595. we follow his way because the details are in

  596. his hands. The compass direction is in ours.

  597. See that? But even if we're pointed in the right

  598. direction, even if we have that compass, we still

  599. can get lost, right? We need to pivot briefly

  600. from John 14. I told you we're gonna end on Palm

  601. Sunday and we'll come back to John 14 as well.

  602. But we need to look at the nature of Palm Sunday.

  603. I am not trying to argue with Jeff, by the way,

  604. on this. We actually don't disagree on the interpretation.

  605. We agree, okay? I just don't have an issue with

  606. the designation. That's the only difference.

  607. But we agree, it's a tradition, and it's one

  608. that does not break fellowship. How does it relate

  609. to our study so far, though? How does it relate?

  610. Let's set the stage for this. Prior to that upper

  611. room, that upper room happens later in the week,

  612. but prior to that, there's a situation that happens

  613. that many of you are familiar with. Jesus raises

  614. Lazarus from the dead. Incredible feat. Literally,

  615. dead for days, and he raises him to life. And

  616. he does that in the city of Bethany, not too

  617. far. I'm going to leave the map stuff to Jeff,

  618. so I didn't even bother with that one. Green,

  619. purple, orange dot. I don't know. He'll figure

  620. it out for you. But it's not very far away. And

  621. he raises Lazarus from the dead in Bethany. Remember,

  622. Lazarus has two that we know of, siblings, Mary

  623. and Martha. Good job, Martha, Martha, Martha.

  624. Some of you know that. Well, I could tell who

  625. was laughing at that one because you younger

  626. people didn't know that one at all. Yeah, it's

  627. Marsha, Marsha, Marsha. Anyways, okay. This is

  628. right before his entry into Jerusalem. He raises

  629. Lazarus from the dead, and then he stays with

  630. them, and Mary anoints his feet with that costly

  631. oil. Remember that one of the disciples was very

  632. burdened by the cost of it? Now, a crowd had

  633. gathered at the home because Lazarus was dead.

  634. They had already, it was already a done deal,

  635. and then he's raised alive. They want to say,

  636. is this true? They wanted to see this prophet

  637. who brought a man back to life. Now Lazarus,

  638. he drew heat from those priests, those chief

  639. priests. They wanted to put Lazarus to death

  640. even because they didn't want proof of this amazing

  641. miracle. They weren't just believing in Jesus

  642. because Lazarus was raised. They were believing

  643. in Jesus because Lazarus was giving testimony

  644. about who Jesus is. Both that miracle and coming

  645. back to life, the one who did it. So that crowd's

  646. there. This is important for us to note. It's

  647. that crowd who was there to see this Jesus and

  648. this miracle that he did that lays down these

  649. branches, that lays down their coats, that says,

  650. Hosanna, blessed is he who comes in the name

  651. of the Lord, even the king of Israel. Do you

  652. remember what Hosanna means? Save us. Save us.

  653. The people were hearing this incredible testimony

  654. of a man who was brought from death back to life.

  655. They're getting ready for Passover. They've been

  656. struggling under Roman rule. They're so weary,

  657. God has been silent. They cry out for salvation

  658. to the right person because there's no other

  659. name given under heaven by which we must be saved.

  660. but what happens to Jesus in just a few days?

  661. On Palm Sunday, they welcomed him like Zechariah

  662. 9 says. Even though John is clear, he says, it

  663. wasn't until after Jesus' ascension that we understood

  664. this. Zechariah 9 says, Rejoice greatly, O daughter

  665. of Zion. Make a loud shout, O daughter of Jerusalem.

  666. Behold, your king is coming to you. He is righteous

  667. and endowed with salvation. lowly and mounted

  668. on a donkey, even on a colt, the foal of a pack

  669. animal. He was welcomed like a king on Sunday,

  670. but by Thursday night, he would be betrayed,

  671. arrested, and put on trial. And by Friday, less

  672. than a week, Jesus, the son of the living God,

  673. the one to whom they cried, save us, Hosanna,

  674. just days earlier, by Friday, the crowd's chance,

  675. the same crowd would change from save us to crucify

  676. him. How tragically quick did those cries change?

  677. From salvation to condemnation in less than a

  678. week. Friends, are we that different? I'm not

  679. trying to imbue you with false guilt or to engender

  680. some kind of emotional response right now. I'm

  681. just appealing to your own sense of self. Are

  682. we not just as fickle? In our moments of hardship,

  683. we beg the Lord to rescue us. We even offer him

  684. deals for his mercy. Lord, if you heal me, if

  685. you get me through this, if you rescue my loved

  686. one, I'll do anything for you. I'll come to church

  687. regularly. I'll serve regularly. I'll read my

  688. Bible daily. I'll tell people about you. You

  689. know what? The Lord is so kind to us. Not because

  690. of the deals that we make. No, in spite of those.

  691. He just tends to be more kind than we can imagine

  692. because we often get through the hardships. We

  693. often get through the difficulties and then what

  694. about those promises that we made under duress?

  695. We forget. We go on being selfish, continuing

  696. in some kind of sin. We presume upon the kindness

  697. of the Lord. We expect him to forgive because

  698. how could he even expect us to fulfill our end

  699. of the deal? Sometimes, friends, Jesus... He

  700. shows us exactly who he is and what he's doing.

  701. Like in the case of Lazarus, bring the dead to

  702. life. The case of his earthly ministry, healing

  703. the sick. Cleansing sinners. And we still, we

  704. still, we get this beautiful picture of his declaration

  705. from his lips, by his actions. And we still get

  706. lost. You know, the crowd wanted a good thing.

  707. They wanted their conquering king who would free

  708. them from a life of misery. But they didn't know

  709. what they were asking for. And go to the next

  710. slide, Josiah. And their excitement over Lazarus

  711. returning from the dead, they really forced an

  712. opportunity to crown Christ. But the crowd, they

  713. only crowned him for that day. They didn't crown

  714. him in their hearts. That's true. You know, sometimes

  715. we want the right Jesus, but for the wrong reason.

  716. We think our way is best. We want to usher Jesus

  717. into a situation to rescue it, to redeem it.

  718. And we miss that he didn't come to this earth

  719. and live a perfect, obedient life and suffer

  720. egregiously as an innocent one to be put to death

  721. and to rise again just so our situations could

  722. be a little bit better. He didn't come to make

  723. our pathway in life easier. He came to obey the

  724. father. He came to make a way for his people,

  725. the people that his father has chosen to be saved.

  726. And he did it. People want Jesus to be king in

  727. their hour of need, but people, people like us,

  728. we get lost. We lose our sense of direction,

  729. even when it's given to us. That's our heart.

  730. That's our struggle. That's why Thomas would

  731. even consider with Jesus, like, come on, dude,

  732. why would you argue with him? Right? But wouldn't

  733. we do the same? Haven't we done the same? But

  734. Lord, did you really say this? Can I really be

  735. saved from that? Will I endure and get through?

  736. So we find ourselves back in John 14 as we wrap

  737. up. Jesus responding, to Thomas. John 14, 6,

  738. Jesus said to him, I am the way and the truth

  739. and the life. No one comes to the Father but

  740. through me. Throughout this morning, we've seen

  741. how we miss Jesus by focusing on merit. We've

  742. seen how we miss Jesus by demanding details and

  743. how we miss Jesus by getting lost. How do we

  744. see Jesus as the way? Believe. Trust and obey.

  745. Some of you know that song, There's No Better

  746. Way. You say, shouldn't there be more to it?

  747. Aren't there more turn -by -turn GPS directions

  748. to this? Look at John 14 .1. Do not let your

  749. heart be troubled. Believe in God. Believe also

  750. in me. The cure for a troubled heart that's wondering

  751. where Jesus is, what he's doing, trust him. Believe

  752. him. He's not only preparing the place for you,

  753. he's gonna come back and ensure that we get there.

  754. So why are you so worried? Why are you so troubled?

  755. Think about it like this. Our friend, he left

  756. here to go get his place ready. And you're so

  757. worried he's not going to come back. But don't

  758. you know him? Don't you know him? He always tells

  759. the truth. He never lies. He cares for his people

  760. more than we care for ourselves. We can just

  761. start walking in the direction. We know it's

  762. that way. Let's just start walking because before

  763. we know it, he's going to be coming back, picking

  764. us up, and we're going to arrive at the right

  765. time, at the right place, by his purpose. Now,

  766. even if trouble befalls us along that way, even

  767. if that journey has all kinds of twists and turns

  768. that we didn't anticipate, we can trust that

  769. he will help us see it through to the end because

  770. he's faithful. Because he's faithful. When you

  771. think about Jesus as the way, I think it's that

  772. last part of John 14, 6 that necessarily explains

  773. it well. He says, No one comes to the Father

  774. but through him. And so if you've heard none

  775. of those three main points that are on the screen

  776. today, that's fine. I labored very hard on those.

  777. I want you to know. But for the Lord, if you

  778. just want that simple tagline to understand that

  779. Jesus is the way, it's the one that I preemptively

  780. showed you already. Jesus came to show us the

  781. direction to secure our destination. Or in other

  782. words, Jesus is the way to the Father's eternal

  783. glory. Now I know some people struggle with the

  784. exclusivity of Jesus as the only way. And maybe

  785. they want multiple options for their loved ones

  786. who do not know Jesus as Lord. But the exclusivity

  787. of Jesus should not bring fear or a troubled

  788. heart. It should bring hope. Think of how overwhelming

  789. a menu like Cheesecake Factory is. is like so

  790. many things. What do you choose? You don't know.

  791. If you haven't been, go, and then you'll see

  792. what I'm talking about. Now, maybe you have less

  793. risk of getting it wrong if you go to In -N -Out,

  794. right? You're narrowed, right? But with Jesus,

  795. it's even more clear. There is one way. One way.

  796. Do you wonder how one can be saved and rescued

  797. from this world? You want that answer? Wonder

  798. no more. Wonder no more, it's through Christ.

  799. Do you long for all the wrongs to be made right?

  800. Are you yearning for that day? You don't need

  801. to long anymore. Turn to Jesus. Do you want to

  802. see eternal days without any sin? Is that what

  803. you want to aim for? Such a desire is fulfilled

  804. by the Messiah. Come, follow him. The uniqueness

  805. of Jesus is the only way. That's a safeguard

  806. for all hope. There's only one way to the everlasting

  807. Father, and it is through Christ. As we've gone

  808. throughout this morning looking at the disciples

  809. struggling with his departure, which will be

  810. very soon, and the crowds being so fickle with

  811. their demands, I really pray that you've considered

  812. yourself. I know I have. I know I saw myself.

  813. I know I saw my shortcomings, how I miss Jesus.

  814. The question is, how will you follow him? So

  815. to the fellow church members and believers here,

  816. let's help one another keep our compasses pointed

  817. the right direction. Let's encourage one another

  818. when we don't have the MapQuest turn -by -turn

  819. directions. Let's remind one another where we're

  820. going, who we're following. Now, if you're new

  821. here this morning, new to our church, or new

  822. to the idea of Jesus is the way, Please, come

  823. talk to one of our elders. They're the really

  824. tall, older guys. Myself, Jeff, a younger, tall

  825. guy over here. Come talk to any church member,

  826. too. Please, church members, be willing to talk

  827. to anyone new about this. Because today could

  828. be the day that you begin to walk in Jesus' way.

  829. And I would pray that that would be the case.

  830. Now, you guys have gotten used to it in Ecclesiastes,

  831. so I figured, why not? Why not give you some

  832. questions at the end? Because it's fun, right?

  833. So there's some questions on the end for you

  834. to consider. Take a screenshot or memorize it.

  835. But think about what we've walked through today.

  836. And in a moment, I'm going to pray for us as

  837. we transition to songs of response and praise.

  838. All right, friends, let's pray. God, we ask that

  839. you would help us see how we miss Jesus. We know

  840. the disciples struggled similarly and we are

  841. no exception. So please, would you help us? Help

  842. us with our blind spots. Help us with what we

  843. don't see and allow us to see. Allow us to see

  844. the Savior rightly. And more than seeing even,

  845. Father, help us. to trust when we don't see.

  846. Help us to believe when we don't have the ability

  847. to touch and to see right here, right now. Help

  848. us to take you at your word and to believe you

  849. at your word. Help us to be more okay going your

  850. direction than knowing all the twists and the

  851. turns of our lives. Help us to faithfully walk

  852. towards Christ because we know where he's going

  853. to lead us. to that eternal dwelling. So would

  854. you grow our faith this Passion Week that we

  855. would be more confident in Jesus than we ever

  856. have been, not because of us in spite of us,

  857. but because of him, he is able. Break our hearts

  858. from our sin and those things that tear us away

  859. from your way and then build us up in Christ.

  860. Strengthen us by your spirit. Instruct us by

  861. your word. And help us to hope, to hope in Christ.

  862. We will not be put to shame if our hope is in

  863. him. So help us now even to allow our tongues

  864. to confess. But more than that, may our lives

  865. show that Christ indeed is king. And he's king

  866. according to his declaration, not our perception.

  867. May we learn what that means, that he is the

  868. only way to an eternal hope. We pray this in

  869. his name. Amen.
