  1. - Hey, if you join us on live stream,

  2. thank you for being with us today.

  3. Are you guys doing good?

  4. - Yeah.

  5. - All right, it's a good day to be in the house of the Lord.

  6. We've got to get on the horse and start riding

  7. 'cause I've got a lot to share today.

  8. So we're gonna stand together and we're gonna read

  9. from Acts chapter 15.

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  10. And let's read like you've had your third cup

  11. of espresso this morning.

  12. How about that?

  13. Here we go.

  14. Certain people came down from Judea to Antioch

  15. and were teaching the believers,

  16. unless you are circumcised according to the custom

  17. taught by Moses, you cannot be saved.

  18. This brought Paul and Barnabas into sharp dispute

  19. and debate with them.

  20. So Paul and Barnabas were appointed along with some

  21. of the other believers to go up to Jerusalem

  22. to see the apostles and elders about this question.

  23. The church sent them on their way and as they traveled

  24. through Phoenicia and Samaria, they told how the Gentiles

  25. had been converted.

  26. The news made all the believers very glad.

  27. When they came to Jerusalem, they were welcomed

  28. by the church and the apostles and elders

  29. to whom they reported everything God had done through them.

  30. Then some of the believers who belonged to the party

  31. of the Pharisees stood up and said,

  32. "The Gentiles must be circumcised and required

  33. "to keep the law of Moses."

  34. The apostles and elders met to consider this question.

  35. After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them.

  36. "Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice

  37. "among you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips

  38. "the message of the gospel and believe.

  39. "God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them

  40. "by giving the Holy Spirit to them just as he did to us.

  41. "He did not discriminate between us and them,

  42. "for he purified their hearts by faith.

  43. "Now then, why do you try to test God

  44. "by putting on the necks of the Gentiles a yoke

  45. "that neither we nor our ancestors have been able to bear?

  46. "No, we believe that it is through grace of our Lord Jesus

  47. "that we are saved just as they are."

  48. The whole assembly became silent as they listened

  49. to Barnabas and Paul telling about the signs

  50. and wonders God had done among the Gentiles through them.

  51. When they finished, James spoke up.

  52. "Brothers," he said, "listen to me.

  53. "Simon has described to us how God first intervened

  54. "to choose a people for his name from the Gentiles.

  55. "The words of the prophets are in agreement with this,

  56. "as it is written.

  57. "After this, I will return and rebuild David's fallen tent.

  58. "Its ruins I will rebuild and I will restore it

  59. "that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord.

  60. "Even all the Gentiles who bear my name, says the Lord,

  61. "who does these things, things known from long ago.

  62. "It is my judgment, therefore,

  63. "that we should not make it difficult

  64. "for the Gentiles who are turning to God.

  65. "Instead, we should write to them,

  66. "telling them to us, staying from food polluted by idols,

  67. "from sexual immorality,

  68. "from the meat of strangled animals, and from blood.

  69. "For the law of Moses has been preached in every city

  70. "from the earliest times,

  71. "and is read in the synagogues on every Sabbath."

  72. Father, I thank you for your word.

  73. I thank you that it brings life.

  74. I thank you that it's true.

  75. I pray, Lord, as we lean into everything

  76. that your word says today,

  77. I pray that my words would fall

  78. and your words would stand for changing us for eternity.

  79. In Jesus' name, amen.

  80. You may be seated.

  81. You get an A in reading, good job.

  82. He asked, did we get an A in reading?

  83. A plus, actually.

  84. We're continuing our series, His Church,

  85. and we are in Acts 15.

  86. I hope that you are following with us in the book of Acts

  87. as it has been rich and it's been transformative,

  88. and we are continuing to be refined here at Springhouse

  89. as the Lord is showing us how the Holy Spirit works in us.

  90. Who here likes rules?

  91. Dun, dun, dun.

  92. Usually, usually rules, when you hear the word rules,

  93. there is a negative connotation tied to it

  94. because our mind automatically goes to,

  95. I don't wanna follow that particular rule

  96. or I don't like rules that bog me down

  97. or provide boundaries or parameters.

  98. And quite honestly, many of us

  99. often just think rules are dumb.

  100. And so we just decide,

  101. I'm not gonna follow the ones I don't like

  102. and I'm just gonna do the things that I do like.

  103. But today we're gonna talk about rules.

  104. Aren't you glad you came to Springhouse today?

  105. Gonna talk a little bit about rules today

  106. and in the context of scripture

  107. and what we're talking about here in Acts chapter 15.

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  108. We are a society who looks to break

  109. as many of rules as we can.

  110. But when it comes to living for the kingdom,

  111. what you do and what you say matters.

  112. What you do and what you say matters.

  113. We kinda live in this space that we feel like

  114. we can just do whatever we want.

  115. After all, we do live in America.

  116. And because of the ocean of grace

  117. that I get to experience as a Christian,

  118. those things that I tend to just lean in and do

  119. even though I know here I probably shouldn't do 'em,

  120. God's got it.

  121. I'm in the ocean of grace, He'd cover it.

  122. It's fine, it's not consequential.

  123. Everything's gonna be great.

  124. And we certainly could succumb to the idea

  125. but could I tell you that that is a very dangerous mindset.

  126. It's a very dangerous mindset

  127. because as we've continued to belabor in this series

  128. is that our life is not just this red part of the rope.

  129. It is for all eternity but do you know that the choices,

  130. listen to this, the choices I make in my life right here

  131. will affect my grandchildren.

  132. And their choices will affect their grandchildren.

  133. Long after I'm gone, if the Lord tarries

  134. and doesn't come back,

  135. these small minute choices,

  136. I remember I was at a Captain D's, who likes Captain D's?

  137. Captain D's, I was at Captain D's with my dad

  138. and I was young and I had just turned 11

  139. and the menu was you get a kid's meal if you're 10 or under

  140. and so he said I need two kids meals

  141. and I said but Dad I'm 11.

  142. He said shut your mouth boy

  143. 'cause he wanted to save a few bucks.

  144. Was it because he didn't have the money to pay?

  145. No, he thinks the rule is done.

  146. He thinks the rule is outlandish

  147. and so he decides to create his own rule

  148. because of his opinion of the rule.

  149. Last week in youth, or this last Thursday,

  150. I got to speak in youth and I had a youth come up

  151. and I put a name tag on them and it said Kevin O'Day

  152. and I put it on the youth and I said just because

  153. this youth has this name tag on him

  154. does not mean that he is Kevin O'Day.

  155. He can wear the name tag all day long.

  156. He can parade it, he can put it in your face.

  157. He can try to dress like me.

  158. He can try to sign his name like me, all this.

  159. But just because he has the name tag on

  160. does not mean that he is Kevin O'Day

  161. and guys just because you have a shirt

  162. that says Christian does not make you a Christian.

  163. What you do and what you say, it matters.

  164. Paul and Barnabas are in dispute

  165. with these Christian leaders, the leaders of the way

  166. because they're placing conditions on the Gentiles.

  167. Now there are Jews and there are Gentiles.

  168. Jews are God's chosen people and the Gentiles

  169. are everybody else's not of Jewish descent

  170. and so the Gentiles are there and Paul and Barnabas

  171. are in this dispute because the Jews are saying,

  172. hey, these Gentiles need to succumb to the rules

  173. and the law that we've had to succumb to

  174. in order to be followers of the way.

  175. But Paul and Barnabas are arguing

  176. because they not only are in relationship with Jesus Christ

  177. and know the way, truth and the life

  178. but they also know that God came, Jesus came rather,

  179. to fulfill the law and in fulfilling the law,

  180. what they were doing was asking the Gentiles

  181. to do something that they themselves could not do.

  182. They themselves could not fulfill the law.

  183. Now before we get into rules and we get into

  184. what was required and what they were talking about,

  185. I wanna make sure to cover this.

  186. There is no us and them in the kingdom.

  187. There's only us and him.

  188. There's no us and them in the kingdom.

  189. There's only us and him and that's important

  190. because as believers, we tend, man,

  191. because of denominational barriers or whatever it is,

  192. we tend to look at other people

  193. who are professing Christians and say,

  194. they don't got it, they're not getting in,

  195. they're not Christians because they either do these things

  196. or don't do these things.

  197. But can I tell you guys that the grace of God

  198. and the pathway to salvation is for everyone equally?

  199. That the only one that had the ability

  200. to put criteria to that is Jesus Christ

  201. and he is the way, the truth and the life.

  202. The word says that no one comes to the Father

  203. except through him.

  204. So in context here, they were talking believers

  205. to believers but I even believe that we sometimes

  206. have this idea here when it comes to non-believers.

  207. When it comes to non-believers.

  208. We look at non-believers and we get saved

  209. through an ocean of grace and mercy,

  210. our profession of faith, we get saved

  211. and now I'm a Christian, I'm a born again Christian

  212. and I see some sinners, I see some unbelievers

  213. and all of a sudden, I start to say,

  214. well, they better get their life together.

  215. They need to do X, Y and Z in order to have what I have.

  216. They need to clean up shop in order to be called a Christian.

  217. So Peter stands up in this argument and he says this.

  218. He, God, did not discriminate between us and them

  219. for he purified their hearts by faith.

  220. Would you say faith?

  221. Now then, why do you try to test God?

  222. That is a sobering question.

  223. Why do you try to, stop for just a minute and think,

  224. can you ever thought that your actions

  225. may be testing the God of the universe?

  226. Whew, whew, that's sobering.

  227. By putting on the necks of the Gentiles a yoke

  228. that neither we nor our ancestors have been able to bear.

  229. And then he continues, he says, no,

  230. we believe it is through the grace of the Lord Jesus

  231. that we're saved just as they are.

  232. The gospel is this, friends, all have sinned

  233. and fallen short of the glory of God.

  234. They who say that they are without sin,

  235. the Lord says that he is a liar.

  236. He or she is a liar.

  237. We all need Jesus Christ to come in

  238. and infiltrate our life.

  239. We need the blood of Christ in our life

  240. because we have all sinned and fallen short

  241. of the glory of God.

  242. This gift of salvation is for everyone.

  243. No certain creed, color, race, denomination,

  244. it is for everyone.

  245. Anyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

  246. Anyone who calls upon the name of the Lord.

  247. Over in Romans it says this, God does not show favoritism.

  248. All who sin apart from the law

  249. will also perish apart from the law

  250. and all who sin under law will be judged by the law.

  251. For it is not those who hear the law

  252. who are righteous in God's sight, look at this,

  253. but it is those who obey the law

  254. who will be declared righteous.

  255. God has some words to say about rules.

  256. And I want us to understand that you and I,

  257. we are no better, listen to this,

  258. we are no better than unbelievers.

  259. The only thing that we have going for us

  260. is our death sentence was traded for life.

  261. Because the word says that the wages for our sin is death,

  262. but the gift of God is eternal life.

  263. But what's more than that, as believers,

  264. we have been rendered capable of offering this gift

  265. to other people.

  266. We've been given the ability to show others Christ Jesus.

  267. And that should be our goal and our aim,

  268. to be witnesses for him.

  269. But we have to go back to understanding

  270. that what we say and what we do matters.

  271. Because unbelievers are watching and they're listening.

  272. Does your testimony line up with what you say

  273. and what you do?

  274. Does the God you say you believe in,

  275. the one you say you love, does your testimony,

  276. does what you say and do line up

  277. with who you say you believe in?

  278. So, what about the rules?

  279. What about the rules?

  280. I mean, if we're saved by grace

  281. and we can swim in an ocean of grace,

  282. man, who cares about rules?

  283. Let's just party and do whatever we want to do.

  284. Let's be honest.

  285. There are rules we like and there's rules we don't like.

  286. In fact, there are rules that we just find plain dumb.

  287. In fact, I've got some dumb rules here.

  288. You wanna hear 'em?

  289. Of course you do.

  290. In Alabama, it's illegal to wear a fake mustache

  291. that causes laughter in a church.

  292. These are real laws.

  293. These are for real.

  294. I didn't make these up.

  295. In Alaska, you cannot push a live moose out of a plane.

  296. In Colorado, it is illegal to keep a couch on your porch.

  297. In Connecticut, pickles must bounce

  298. in order to be considered safe for human consumption.

  299. In Florida, unmarried women who parachute on Sundays

  300. can be fined or jailed.

  301. So, you better get married

  302. if you're gonna parachute on Sunday.

  303. In Georgia, carrying an ice cream cone in your back pocket

  304. is illegal.

  305. In Hawaii, coins are not allowed to be placed in your ears.

  306. In Idaho, riding a merry-go-round on Sundays is illegal.

  307. In Illinois, it is illegal to take a nap

  308. in a cheese factory.

  309. In Louisiana, mourners at a wake

  310. may not eat more than three sandwiches.

  311. One, two, three.

  312. In Missouri, a single male must be charged an annual tax

  313. for not being married.

  314. You better get married quick if you're living in Missouri.

  315. In Nevada, it's illegal to lay down on a sidewalk.

  316. In New York, it is illegal to throw a ball

  317. at somebody's head for fun.

  318. Better have a reason to throw that ball at their face.

  319. In Pennsylvania, it's illegal to catch a fish

  320. with your mouth.

  321. In Arizona, donkeys cannot sleep in bathtubs.

  322. And in Kansas, hitting a vending machine

  323. that stole your money is illegal.

  324. Lots of dumb rules.

  325. All these laws that are here,

  326. what are you gonna do with them

  327. when you're confronted with them?

  328. You ever hear one of these rules,

  329. you're like, what made them have to write that rule?

  330. Somebody had that donkey in that bathtub

  331. and they were like, we're not doing this again.

  332. When we disagree with rules, we often redefine them

  333. or we just obey, just disobey.

  334. Now, if I could rewrite a rule, this would be all day long,

  335. I would definitely rewrite this rule all day long.

  336. This would be like, this would be my favorite rule ever.

  337. Just right here, you know, I would push it down

  338. and I would be happy to follow this rule all day long.

  339. And sometimes I read this, even though it doesn't say this.

  340. This is what my eyes perceive

  341. whenever I look at the speed limit sign.

  342. We are people who have the propensity

  343. to make up our own things based on our own agendas,

  344. our own opinions, and what we want

  345. with no consideration for others.

  346. The Lord said to me this year at Springhouse Church,

  347. we are being refined.

  348. We are being refined.

  349. And refined means, in the terms with which we're using it,

  350. is that we're becoming more like Christ Jesus.

  351. We're becoming more like the God who saved us,

  352. the Jesus who saved us.

  353. And when we are less of ourselves,

  354. we can become more like Him.

  355. We can sound like Him, we can look like Him,

  356. we act like Him.

  357. And this means we're becoming more like Jesus

  358. and less like us.

  359. And in this refining process, we look more like Jesus, why?

  360. So that we can present the gospel.

  361. We look more like Jesus so that we can present the gospel.

  362. The word gospel means good news.

  363. The word gospel is good news.

  364. And what I'm about to say is gonna shock some of you.

  365. The gospel does not require obedience.

  366. Silence.

  367. The gospel does not require obedience.

  368. Here's the gospel.

  369. We couldn't keep up with the rules.

  370. So Jesus Christ had to die for us.

  371. We have a propensity to make it about rules

  372. once we're on this side of salvation.

  373. And we expect those who don't know Christ

  374. to follow Him and follow His rules.

  375. What about the times when we look at non-believers

  376. and we make, in our mind, we expect non-believers

  377. to live a biblical standard,

  378. though they don't believe in the Bible.

  379. That doesn't make any sense.

  380. But the gospel does not, within itself,

  381. the gospel does not require obedience.

  382. This is what the scripture says.

  383. If you declare with your mouth Jesus is Lord

  384. and believe in your heart that He's raised Him from the dead,

  385. you will be saved.

  386. That's what the scripture tells us.

  387. So the gospel requires two things.

  388. It requires repentance and it requires faith.

  389. That's the requirement for the gospel, not obedience.

  390. Isn't that the whole crux of the story,

  391. that we tried to work so hard?

  392. If the gospel required obedience,

  393. then we would not need Jesus,

  394. because it would be attainable.

  395. The only way to be saved is by living,

  396. deciding in your heart, I'm gonna repent

  397. and believe by faith that Jesus did what He said He did

  398. and He is who He says He is.

  399. Somebody asked a pastor once,

  400. I've shared this before I saw it on a reel.

  401. He said, "Do I have to stop smoking marijuana

  402. "to be a Christian?"

  403. And the pastor said, "No."

  404. He said, "No, no, you don't understand."

  405. I said, "Do I have to stop smoking like marijuana,

  406. "like getting high, do be."

  407. He said, "No."

  408. He said, "No, no, you don't understand.

  409. "If I pull out a fatty and I'm a roller,

  410. "like literally, if I smoke marijuana,

  411. "do I have to give this up to be a Christian?"

  412. And the pastor said, "No."

  413. And he said, "I don't understand."

  414. And he said, "Exactly, you don't understand,

  415. "because you don't clean yourself up

  416. "and then go take a shower.

  417. "You go into the shower and then you are rendered clean."

  418. And when you come to Jesus, you come to him dirty,

  419. and in that process of meeting the Lord and Savior

  420. of your life, the one who loves you more than anybody else

  421. on the planet, all of a sudden you become motivated

  422. to clean your life up.

  423. We don't understand it pre-salvation.

  424. We begin to understand it post-salvation

  425. because we are motivated by Christ.

  426. We are motivated by Christ.

  427. Here's the thing, the gospel produces obedience.

  428. The gospel produces in us a willingness and a desire

  429. to be obedient, because we are motivated

  430. by this exchange, death to life.

  431. If obedience was the requirement,

  432. then we would attempt to do it without Jesus.

  433. When you realize that you are loved

  434. more than you've ever been loved,

  435. you are motivated to obey.

  436. Here's what 1 John says,

  437. "No one who lives in him keeps on sinning."

  438. Let that marinate for a second.

  439. If I were to say, show of hands of those

  440. who are living in him, many of you put your hands up,

  441. no one who lives in him keeps on sinning.

  442. What I'm talking about is I'm pirating this movie

  443. proactively, I know I'm pirating it, I'm not paying for it.

  444. I know that I'm breaking, I'm proactively doing,

  445. I'm continuously doing things over,

  446. no one who lives in him keeps on sinning.

  447. No one who continues to sin has either seen him

  448. or known him, what else does it say?

  449. "For everything in the world, the lust of the flesh,

  450. "the lust of the eyes and the pride of life,"

  451. are what, are not from the Father, but from the world.

  452. Look, we are called to live like, look like,

  453. sound like, and be like Jesus.

  454. And we don't want anything that is not from Father God.

  455. We live in America.

  456. And America has been dubbed as the greatest country

  457. in the world, the greatest country in the world.

  458. And many of you would believe that we are

  459. the greatest country in the world.

  460. I could understand that and I could get a lot behind

  461. some of that thought process as well.

  462. But here's the problem that I have.

  463. Do you know that America, from its very genesis,

  464. its foundation was bathed in rebellion?

  465. Like the reason that we are the greatest country

  466. in the world is we decided we didn't wanna follow rules.

  467. That's why we're here, okay?

  468. And so we are now the greatest country in the world,

  469. but here's my problem, we're the greatest country

  470. in the world.

  471. I don't belong to the world, I belong to a kingdom

  472. that's outside of this world.

  473. So the real question is, is America the greatest country

  474. in the kingdom?

  475. And guys, unfortunately, I have a lot of things

  476. I could stand on to say, I don't think so.

  477. Because the very anthem of America is do what you wanna do

  478. when you wanna do it, no matter who it hurts,

  479. no matter who it is, it's all about you.

  480. So the very genesis of the country we live in

  481. is bathed in, we're not gonna follow rules.

  482. We're gonna rebel against rules.

  483. So Kevin, is there an expectation to be perfect?

  484. Like is there an expectation, how many have heard

  485. from Christians, perfection is not the goal?

  486. Raise your hand.

  487. Have you heard, perfection's not the goal,

  488. perfection's not the goal.

  489. I beg to differ.

  490. This is what Jesus said, read that first two words.

  491. - Be perfect. - Oh, y'all didn't read it.

  492. Obey what I say, okay?

  493. Read those first two words.

  494. - Be perfect.

  495. - I'm not saying this, okay?

  496. This is Jesus Christ.

  497. He says, be perfect, therefore,

  498. as your heavenly Father is perfect.

  499. If Jesus is saying be perfect, it tells me

  500. there's a pathway to get there.

  501. There's a pathway to get there.

  502. What else does it say?

  503. Jesus says to the rich ruler, the rich guy

  504. who wants to come and follow Jesus,

  505. it says, if you want to be perfect,

  506. well, if Jesus is saying if you want to be perfect,

  507. it tells me there must be a way.

  508. If you want to be perfect, go sell your possessions,

  509. give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven.

  510. Then it says, then come and follow me.

  511. Come and follow me.

  512. Okay, let's continue.

  513. But just as he who has called you holy is holy, what?

  514. So be holy in all you do.

  515. Be holy in the things that you agree with.

  516. Be holy in some of the things.

  517. No, be holy in all.

  518. Be holy in all the things you do.

  519. Be holy because I'm holy.

  520. We are called to look like Jesus and Jesus is perfect.

  521. Who's arrived?

  522. None of us have arrived.

  523. This is where grace comes in.

  524. Grace is not permission to back out of the continuation

  525. of the sanctification process.

  526. Grace is there to cover us on the journey

  527. as we trip up and try to work out flesh versus spirit.

  528. Flesh versus spirit.

  529. I'm gonna choose the flesh today,

  530. I'm gonna choose the spirit today,

  531. I'm gonna choose the flesh today,

  532. I'm going to choose the spirit today.

  533. And guys, we can't do it by ourselves.

  534. We can't do it on our own.

  535. So what is the motivation, Hannah?

  536. What is the motivation, Justin?

  537. Landon, what is our motivation to get up each morning

  538. and say, I'm going to try and follow Christ

  539. and look like him?

  540. Our motivation so often is, I wanna do the right thing.

  541. Or this is wrong, I don't wanna do the bad things.

  542. That should not be our motivation.

  543. Our motivation to obey is a person.

  544. And that person is Jesus Christ.

  545. He is our motivation to follow the rules, to obey.

  546. If I don't, listen, I'm married to Sherry.

  547. Do you know I have every opportunity

  548. to step out of my marriage and do a whole bunch of stuff?

  549. Every day, I have that choice.

  550. If you're married, you have that choice as well.

  551. Why do I obey the rules of marriage?

  552. Is it because I said something here at the altar?

  553. No.

  554. Is it because it's written down as a rule

  555. on a piece of paper?

  556. No.

  557. I even think that some of the rules of marriage

  558. might be dumb, but it doesn't matter.

  559. The reason I obey the rules of marriage

  560. is because I love my wife.

  561. Because I love my wife.

  562. Let me ask you something.

  563. Does your lifestyle indicate that you love your savior?

  564. Because here's the thing, I don't have the propensity

  565. to go rob a bank today.

  566. Now John, he's struggling with it.

  567. We're gonna pray with him later.

  568. But I'm not gonna go rob a bank this afternoon.

  569. I actually don't really think I'll kill anybody

  570. in the near future.

  571. I mean, I'm pretty good on some of these things.

  572. Here's the thing, we tend to take these big, bolder sins

  573. and we say, I've got those in check.

  574. But it's not those big things.

  575. Why are we willing to compromise our relationship

  576. and love for Jesus over small things

  577. such as pirating a video?

  578. (audience member speaking faintly)

  579. Or not following in line with whatever, you name it,

  580. there's a variety of things I could say.

  581. Why is it that we are willing to,

  582. because this is what we do.

  583. Think about it in the context of your marriage.

  584. I can hold this other girl's hands, that's not a big deal.

  585. It's a small thing, I'm not doing it.

  586. I'm just holding her hand.

  587. I'm gonna go on a date with this other lady.

  588. I mean, we're just hanging out.

  589. - Absolutely not. - We're just hanging out.

  590. I mean, it's not, you look at me and say,

  591. that's ludicrous, is that correct?

  592. - Absolutely not. - Why?

  593. Why would you say that?

  594. You would say that because your fuel and energy

  595. toward anger toward me isn't having anything to do with me.

  596. It has to do with everything about Sherri.

  597. And the fueled energy that we ought to have

  598. when it comes to us breaking small rules,

  599. things in place should be the energy

  600. of how it affects our relationship with Jesus Christ.

  601. Because supposedly, we love Him more than our spouse.

  602. Supposedly, He is number one in our lives.

  603. Love is the motivator.

  604. Here's what Jesus said, Jesus said,

  605. if you love me, if you love me, keep my commands.

  606. If you love me, keep my commands,

  607. and I will ask the Father, and He will give you

  608. another advocate to help you and be with you forever.

  609. Guys, that last part is so important

  610. because we can't be perfect

  611. without the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  612. The Holy Spirit empowers us to do hard things.

  613. I need somebody who's willing to say,

  614. hey, you know, just the other day,

  615. somebody was texting me and they were telling me

  616. kind of an excuse of why they weren't doing something,

  617. and then they followed up with the text of the truth.

  618. And I said, hey, thank you for telling me the truth.

  619. That's hard, it's easier just to justify,

  620. it's easier just to explain away.

  621. I also have another friend who told me recently,

  622. they were like, man, there are some times

  623. when I'm with people, certain people,

  624. and I will act one way 'cause I don't want them

  625. to see me in a bad light, but I'll do the same thing

  626. in front of other people and it doesn't matter to me.

  627. That conveys the level of love and respect

  628. that you have for each of those parties.

  629. And it also tells me that there's probably

  630. one side of that faction that's not making you

  631. look like Christ, and you might wanna evaluate

  632. that relationship, those relationships.

  633. Isn't this fun?

  634. Okay.

  635. We have the Holy Spirit.

  636. We do not have to understand everything to obey.

  637. I think the rule is dumb, so what?

  638. Understanding is not the prerequisite to obedience,

  639. trust is.

  640. Trust, trust is the prerequisite to obedience.

  641. Dustin Minchi got up here a few weeks ago

  642. and he shared during the offering time,

  643. he said, man, I heard a message several weeks prior,

  644. and he said, man, I used to go to the Dollar Tree

  645. and we would buy candy and stuff it in our bags

  646. and then go to the movie, and he's like, man,

  647. I just, I felt convicted, so I went and spent

  648. more money on candy than I'd ever spent on candy

  649. at the movie theater.

  650. And guys, how many think, well, don't raise your hand,

  651. who thinks it's highway robbery paying those prices

  652. for the same nope-dugs that you can get down the road?

  653. You know, it's kind of, it seems to be a silly dumb rule.

  654. Okay, yes, it certainly is.

  655. But here's the thing, the justification in that

  656. is, man, I don't wanna pay that much money,

  657. or I don't have, listen, I don't have 45, $50

  658. to lay out on candy, so I'm gonna go and try

  659. to figure out another way.

  660. Might I reframe your mind?

  661. As opposed to breaking the rule and breaking the law,

  662. and I'm just gonna call it what it is,

  663. instead of sinning, what if you reframed your mind

  664. and said, God, increase my trust that you will actually

  665. provide the funds to pay what they're asking for the candy?

  666. Because so many of us are actually relying

  667. on a large bank account rather than the God

  668. who owns the cattle on the hill.

  669. And in justification for not spending the money

  670. is to build the large bank account,

  671. because our security isn't in Jesus Christ.

  672. It's in what we can do with our hands

  673. and how much we can earn, and how silly it is.

  674. Jesus said, give Caesar what is Caesar's.

  675. In other words, obey the rule, obey the law.

  676. And there's a myriad of things under that umbrella

  677. that he asked us to do, so is it that you just don't want

  678. to do that, or is it that you don't really trust the Lord?

  679. You don't really trust him with your life.

  680. You know, as long as I got this big bank account,

  681. it doesn't really matter.

  682. Or if I don't have any money, I have a God

  683. who can supply all my needs.

  684. Maybe, maybe the Lord is saying, Kevin,

  685. you don't need to buy another pair of shoes.

  686. That's why you don't have money to buy the candy

  687. at the movie theater, right?

  688. He actually cares about all of the finite details, why?

  689. Because as he works out those finite details,

  690. I become more like Christ.

  691. Well, why do I want to become more like Christ?

  692. Because there's a dying world out there

  693. who needs to see Jesus Christ.

  694. 11 years old, I'm 42, I remember my dad saying,

  695. shut your mouth.

  696. So the decisions we make, the small ones

  697. when we're laying on our couch at home,

  698. the small in our house, in the intimate setting

  699. with the people closest to us, we're oblivious

  700. to the things, we're not really oblivious,

  701. but we're just moving forward, it's not a big deal.

  702. We're gonna have ramifications well into the future.

  703. Do you look like Christ?

  704. And the enemy's just laughing, 'cause no,

  705. you're not gonna go murder anybody,

  706. you're gonna go rob a bank, but boy,

  707. you sure do have a lot of small things.

  708. Do you trust them?

  709. These are my kids, and I won't tell you which one,

  710. 'cause I don't want to out her, but the other day,

  711. we were walking down the road, and I said, get up here,

  712. and the cars were coming down the road,

  713. and she chose not to listen, and I said,

  714. get up here with us right now, we need to hold hands,

  715. and she chose not to listen, and so I said,

  716. I'm gonna count to five, now, this is very abnormal to me,

  717. 'cause I'm usually a once, I said it, it's done,

  718. but third time, I'm gonna count to five,

  719. get up here, count to five, she didn't come,

  720. and I said, on the count of five, I'm gonna spank you

  721. if you don't get up here, well, guess what I did,

  722. right there in the middle of the road, I spanked her.

  723. You know that God spanks you?

  724. Do you know he's not afraid to spank you?

  725. Why did I spank my daughter?

  726. Because I don't like her, 'cause I think that she's awful,

  727. 'cause I don't think that she's capable of, no.

  728. I spanked her so that she remembers the pain in that moment

  729. will far supersede a car hitting her in the face

  730. whenever I tell her to come up to me,

  731. I need her to listen to me,

  732. because I know it's in her best interest,

  733. and God Almighty knows what's in your best interest,

  734. even when you don't understand, even when you're like,

  735. God, I don't understand, this makes no,

  736. this is meaningless, this has nothing to do with anybody

  737. as he's watching the little kid watch you

  738. make the decision you're making.

  739. God's care is so much larger, expansive,

  740. than anything we can imagine, he does care.

  741. He wants you to look like his son.

  742. He wants us to look like his kid.

  743. So I asked you the question today, do you trust the Lord?

  744. And don't be quick to answer the question, think about it.

  745. Do you actually trust the Lord?

  746. Which areas are you struggling and trusting him?

  747. That's part of the journey.

  748. Guys, you didn't wake up with holy amnesia

  749. the day you got saved, and now all of a sudden

  750. everything's gone, you're just perfect and completed.

  751. No, guess what?

  752. You're set free from those chains of bondage

  753. so that you can begin living an abundant life

  754. that looks like Christ Jesus.

  755. But a part of that evolution and that story,

  756. until the day he comes or the day he takes you out,

  757. is do you trust him?

  758. And honestly, the barometer is are you following the rules?

  759. Are you following, are you doing what he's telling you to do?

  760. I don't feel convicted about that, Kev.

  761. Your feelings are fickle.

  762. What you feel about something, the person next to you

  763. doesn't feel the same thing.

  764. And let me speak for just a moment

  765. for those self-righteous people who follow all the rules.

  766. Your job is not to put a big glaring spotlight

  767. on everybody who's not doing the right thing

  768. to make sure they know they're not doing the right thing.

  769. Your job is to continue to walk in righteousness

  770. so those people can see the blessing on your life

  771. and God can love them up to the place that they need to be.

  772. Do you trust the Lord?

  773. I don't like what I'm being told to do,

  774. but my love for Jesus supersedes what I think

  775. and what I feel, so I'm going to make a choice,

  776. my choice today is to obey.

  777. Love the Lord God with all your heart

  778. and all your soul and all your mind.

  779. This is the first and greatest commandment

  780. and the second is like it, love your neighbor as yourself.

  781. I would say do you love the Lord

  782. and hands would fly up all over the place here.

  783. I love the Lord because we have so perverted

  784. the word love here that it's all about,

  785. I feel like I love the Lord.

  786. I felt that goose bump this morning

  787. after my third cup of coffee,

  788. I really felt the love of the Lord, it was great.

  789. It was fantastic.

  790. Love is a choice.

  791. Love is a choice.

  792. Paul says that we should be all things to all people.

  793. You know what that tells me?

  794. That tells me if Kurt comes into my life

  795. and I'm sitting here and I'm doing something

  796. that he considers a stumbling block,

  797. that he considers sin and I learn about it,

  798. I don't get the privilege of looking and saying,

  799. Kurt, it's no big deal or get over yourself

  800. or I'm just gonna continue doing it.

  801. Because I say I love him, love your neighbor as yourself,

  802. I now have to make a choice to love him

  803. to change my behavior even if it's none of his business.

  804. And I wanna do that because my love neighbor,

  805. love your neighbor is fueled by love the Lord your God.

  806. Love the Lord your God is if you love me, follow my commands.

  807. Follow my commands is love your Lord God,

  808. love your neighbor, pray for the authorities over you.

  809. God, I don't understand, my boss is telling me to do stuff

  810. and I just wanna punch him in the face, God.

  811. My boss is telling me to do stuff and I can't stand it.

  812. But because I love you, God, I'm going to submit joyfully

  813. because I don't wanna taint my witness for you, God.

  814. And I'm gonna trust that if there's anything going on here

  815. that you wanna fix, God, then you're gonna do it.

  816. But more than that, here's my prayer, God,

  817. give me eyes to see the situation the way you do.

  818. Because my opinion really doesn't matter in this,

  819. I wanna become like you, Christ.

  820. But it's not fair, God, that they get to do this

  821. or they got that promotion or they got that razor,

  822. I'm overlooked and God says,

  823. will you continue to be faithful?

  824. Will you continue to, will you trust me enough

  825. to know that I've got you in the end?

  826. That I've got you in the predicament

  827. or in the situation for a reason.

  828. Do you trust the Lord?

  829. Obedience is motivated by love.

  830. This is my friend Vonda, many of you know Vonda Coble.

  831. And she didn't come to church today,

  832. so I'm gonna talk about her.

  833. We went to, we take the students at the school

  834. to New York every now and then.

  835. And there was a trip that we took them to New York.

  836. And we got to New York and we're going to a Broadway show.

  837. And we took about 20 students to this Broadway show.

  838. And we got there and there were only 18 tickets

  839. and there were 20 of us.

  840. And they made a mistake.

  841. And so I'm over at the box office

  842. getting it all straightened out.

  843. Well, they give us two, obviously they give us

  844. the two tickets that we need to get in.

  845. And so we get there and they've got all of the 18 tickets

  846. are on that second tier and there are two tickets

  847. that are in the very front row, front two seats,

  848. dead center where you're looking at the stage like this.

  849. Well, guess who took the two tickets?

  850. Vonda and Kevin, right?

  851. Okay, so the kids are up there and Vonda and Kevin

  852. are going to come down here.

  853. Well, I like to get concessions.

  854. I like to, I don't like to pay $10 for peanut M&M's,

  855. but I did.

  856. I got the M&M's and they had these pink slushies

  857. and we both wanted a pink slushie and we wanted M&M's.

  858. So I got M&M's and pink slushie, Vonda went to the restroom.

  859. So I'm paying for the food or whatnot.

  860. We're getting the kids settled and we're making sure

  861. that they're where they're supposed to be.

  862. Vonda comes out of the bathroom.

  863. I give her her slushie and her M&M's.

  864. I take mine and we're walking down the side of the aisle

  865. and we notice there are no other seats sold

  866. in the front two rows except for Vonda and me.

  867. So we're walking here and all of a sudden I look up

  868. and the people in the third and fourth row,

  869. they all have their cameras out like this.

  870. And they're, because Vonda tends to dress like Janet Jackson

  871. like she's like famous, you know?

  872. So, and I just was her wody, you know?

  873. I've just got them all kind of with her.

  874. I'm like, they are taping us right now, you know?

  875. So we sit down and we're in the front

  876. and the show hasn't started and Vonda takes a big old drink

  877. of this slushie.

  878. Big old gulp.

  879. And her eyes flare open just as big as they can get.

  880. Now Vonda is, you know, she's just wired

  881. that she's gonna take you down with her if she goes down,

  882. okay?

  883. So she looked at me, she said,

  884. "Kevin O'Day, take a drink of your slushie."

  885. She said, "Kevin O'Day, take a drink

  886. "of your slushie right now."

  887. And so I was like, what, is it good?

  888. Oh, it must be good.

  889. So I took a big swig, it was alcoholic.

  890. 100% alcohol.

  891. And so we're there in the front and we have these things.

  892. Now I want you to understand the setting.

  893. We are front and center.

  894. We are being taped by people we do not know.

  895. And we have 18 students looking down at us right now.

  896. Vonda looked at me and we looked at each other and said,

  897. "We're gonna set these on the floor.

  898. "We're not gonna finish this drink.

  899. "We're gonna wait till the show's over

  900. "and in front of the students,

  901. "we're gonna pour this out in front of them

  902. "and tell them what happened."

  903. Okay?

  904. Now, many of you would have just said,

  905. "Well, it's a drink, it's one drink, it's not a big deal."

  906. Okay?

  907. Many of you would have been like,

  908. "Hey, especially you paid 20 bucks

  909. "or whatever it was for the drink,

  910. "you're gonna, I'm licking the cup."

  911. You know what I mean?

  912. It's like, it's that, it's gonna happen.

  913. Do you know that during the entire play,

  914. the kids were talking about the fact

  915. that we were drinking alcohol?

  916. We didn't know about it until afterward.

  917. Do you know how important it was that we showed them

  918. and told them the mistake and poured it out in front of them?

  919. 'Cause we don't wanna ruin our witness.

  920. We don't want, it doesn't matter if it was dumb

  921. that we didn't drink the drink,

  922. it doesn't matter what our opinion was.

  923. Oh, but if you only drink one drink,

  924. you won't get drunk, it's fine.

  925. You can justify yourself out of a paper bag.

  926. There are people watching you that you do not know

  927. and there are people watching you who you do know.

  928. And your witness is always, always, always

  929. right there front and center.

  930. And so we poured it out in front of them

  931. and we were so glad because they came out

  932. before we could even show them.

  933. Oh, Miss Coble, you getting twisted,

  934. you getting turnt up.

  935. It's literally what they're saying.

  936. Thankfully, we were able to tell them what happened

  937. because we didn't want our witness destroyed.

  938. Do you believe what you say you believe?

  939. This is the cornerstone of the chapters

  940. we've been reading.

  941. Washington, you can come on back.

  942. This has been the cornerstone of the chapters

  943. we've been reading.

  944. Guys, do you really believe what you say you believe?

  945. Is Jesus Christ the lover of your soul

  946. and do you love him back?

  947. Because he is with us.

  948. The bridegroom is with us.

  949. I've asked Cole Burkett to come and share

  950. a little bit of his testimony as it relates

  951. to where he's right now because it relates

  952. and connects so clearly to what we've been talking

  953. about today.

  954. Would you guys listen to Cole?

  955. - I just wanna first say I've been in a certainly

  956. a tough season in my life and it took me so long

  957. to surrender in a lot of ways.

  958. And because of the surrender that I finally kinda came to,

  959. I'm like, all right, Lord, only you can work this out.

  960. I'm now being, things are being revealed to me

  961. and one of those things is what I'm gonna talk

  962. about this morning.

  963. I just wanna say that first that you gotta surrender

  964. sometimes for the Lord to reveal things in your life

  965. that you would be so blind to unless you had surrendered.

  966. That thing is this, me and my wife have been married

  967. for a year and three months, four months now

  968. and there are things that I did prior to being married

  969. with my wife that I had no idea would hurt her

  970. the way that it has hurt her.

  971. And the question that I have been pondering

  972. is would I have done those things if she had been there

  973. right with me?

  974. If I had been in relationship with her knowing

  975. that one day she'd be my wife.

  976. No, I wouldn't have done those things.

  977. I wouldn't have willingly hurt her.

  978. And in the same way, let me ask you this,

  979. maybe you've heard this prayer or maybe this hurt

  980. or heard in a singing of a song.

  981. Jesus, break my heart for what breaks yours.

  982. Break my heart, Lord, for what breaks yours.

  983. It's through that mechanism that you grow

  984. in a deeper relationship with Christ and in the same way

  985. with my wife, my relationship with her has deepened

  986. and it's not been through how well I follow the rules

  987. with her.

  988. The mechanism has been I want to love her

  989. and through that now I'm following rules that I didn't

  990. when before I had known her.

  991. So in my life, in my relationship with Christ,

  992. I want to love Jesus first and through that mechanism

  993. of loving him, he's making me perfect.

  994. It's through that that he's making me in right standing

  995. with him.

  996. And so in my marriage with my wife, it's showing me

  997. that Jesus might not be physically here in this moment

  998. but this is preparing me on how to love Jesus right now

  999. through the privilege of loving my wife

1000. and laying my life down for her, laying my destiny down

1001. for her and it's a beautiful thing.

1002. But man, it humbles you and it breaks your heart

1003. for what breaks hers but it breaks my heart

  1004. for what breaks Jesus's.

1005. And so that's the question that I want to ask you guys

  1006. this morning at Springhouse.

1007. Jesus break my heart for what breaks yours.

1008. - And Kaylin has certainly forgiven Cole,

  1009. she's not forgotten.

  1010. She's not forgotten.

1011. Guys, our choices and our actions have consequences

1012. whether we like it or not, sometimes they're small,

  1013. sometimes they're pretty big.

1014. And when we grapple through the consequences,

1015. we learn, right, we learn but man,

1016. why not lean into Christ, the power of the Holy Spirit

1017. and grapple with the positive consequences

1018. of living for a kingdom that's which you belong to.

1019. And that's his desire for us, that's his desire.

1020. So Gentiles need to be circumcised, no, no.

1021. You need to do X, Y and Z to earn,

1022. no, you don't need to earn your salvation,

1023. your salvation is free, cost him something, it's free to you

1024. but beyond that, becoming like Christ Jesus,

1025. it's gonna cost you everything.

1026. Cost you your pride, your arrogance,

1027. it's gonna cost you the willingness to say,

1028. yeah, I do think that that rule is dumb

1029. but I'm gonna submit to it

1030. and I'm not gonna make a big stink about it,

1031. I'm not gonna say, look at me, I'm following this dumb rule,

1032. I'm just gonna do it.

1033. Because at the end of the day,

1034. I want no one to have a reason to look at me and say,

  1035. I don't look like Christ Jesus.

1036. Jess, stand with me this morning.

1037. You know, the call this morning, this is a heavy word

1038. but the call this morning really is one to say this,

1039. Lord, break my heart for what breaks yours.

1040. And maybe as a step of faith,

1041. some of you may need to come to the altar and say,

1042. God, I need you to break my heart for what breaks you,

1043. I've been serving myself way too long in small things

1044. and what an amazing way to chip out pride

1045. for those of you who are too proud to admit

1046. that there are small things,

1047. 'cause man, everybody looks at me,

  1048. if I go forward, man, they're gonna think that I do X, Y and Z

  1049. it doesn't matter because you do X, Y and Z.

1050. And the one you say you love most knows it.

1051. So what would it look like to break down the barriers

1052. and walls of pride and say, man,

1053. God, I need you to break my heart for what breaks yours,

1054. help me Lord in these small areas where I'm giving in

1055. and I'm compromising my love for you,

1056. I need you to help me, I need you to infiltrate my heart

1057. 'cause I wanna be like you, Lord.

1058. That's the call this morning

1059. and with those who are gonna minister, come on up

1060. and we can agree with people,

1061. maybe you just wanna come and get my altar space,

  1062. that's totally fine too,

1063. we're just gonna worship for a few moments here.

1064. If you have a prayer need,

1065. you can come and join with someone

  1066. and if you're a leader,

1067. because here's the thing, we're authentic here,

1068. if you're a leader, I'm talking to you guys

1069. that are gonna pray for people.

1070. If you're a leader and you need to bow your knee

1071. and not being prayed today,

1072. you absolutely have the freedom to do that

  1073. because nobody's exempt, right?

1074. It's not us and them, it's us and Him.

  1075. Let's worship.
