In God Alone: Trusting at all Times (North OC)

Marcel: All right, so we're going to continue in our series in God alone.

Uh, Daniel Samogie spoke last week and talked about trusting for the generations.

And today we're going to be talking about trusting at all times.

Trusting at all times.

Let's go to the Father in prayer.

Father in heaven, you are glorious.

You are magnificent.

You are powerful.

You are the Almighty.

You are the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, the first.

and the last.

You are a refuge.

You are a safe place.

Our deliverer, our hope, our stronghold and our fortress and our salvation.

God, we are grateful that we have you as all those things.

But yet you are also our dear father and we thank you for this chance to

get into your word and study out what your message is for us this morning.

And we pray for that.

We will trust in you, God, that we will put our trust in our

faith in you and in you alone.

And God, you will lead us to green pastures beside quiet waters.

And God, we know that your mercy and your goodness follow us wherever we go.

And we praise you in Jesus name.

Amen.

We're going to go over to Psalm 62, Psalm 62, and uh, we are going to actually

be reading from the NASB today, okay?

The NASB, throw you off a little bit, a little flavor in here for you.

And so we're going to read in Psalm 62, again, we've been

reading, or walking through some of the Psalms for this series.

And a reminder, the Psalms are really kind of a spiritual playlist, if

you will, God's Spotify playlist.

Because it's filled with poetry and songs and they really communicate how

to have a relationship with God, but also, uh, helping us to understand some

of God's character and God's truth and God's promises so that as we read and

sing and worship God together and in our own personal devotional time, we can

be reminded and therefore our faith can grow and we can walk in the ways of God.

And so here we are in song.

Psalm 62, it reads, my soul, wait, let's do this also.

As we read this, I want you to go ahead and take notes, please write

down anything that stands out to you.

Maybe there's a word, there's a phrase, there's a concept that stands out to you.

So go ahead and write that down as we walk through Psalm 62.

So let's read it again.

It says, my soul waits in silence.

For God alone.

From Him comes my salvation.

He alone is my rock and my salvation.

My stronghold.

I will not be greatly shaken.

How long will you attack a man that you may murder him, all of him, like a

leaning wall, like a tottering fence.

They have planned only to thrust him down from his high position.

They delight in falsehood.

They bless with their mouth, but inwardly they curse my soul,

wait in silence for God alone.

For my hope is from him.

He alone is my rock and my salvation, my refuge.

I will not.

My salvation and my glory rest on God.

The rock of my strength, my refuge is in God.

Trust in him at all times, you people.

Pour out your hearts before him.

God is a refuge for us.

People of low standing are only breath and people of rank are alive.

In the balances they go up, together they are lighter than breath.

Do not trust in oppression and do not vainly rely on robbery.

If wealth increases Do not say your heart on it.

God has spoken once twice I have heard this that power belongs to God

and Faithfulness is yours for you reward a person According to his work.

her husband mentioning, uh, the word silence and, uh, and then also she

talked about stronghold, being a vet.

That really resonated because it gives you the advantage and if God's

our stronghold, we have an advantage over our enemy, the devil there.

so the last line, how God will reward our work and so sometimes you can

forget that, but trust that God will bring about a righteous judgment.

Uh, what's this?

How God is our refuge.

And so we'll be shaken by things, but however, we're safe and we won't be shaken

to the point in which we'll be upended.

Yes, that's good.

That's good.

All right.

Okay, so the word waiting and how it requires patience and that

could be a challenge to be patient to wait upon God right there.

And so I know we can share some other things, but there's already

been some good that's been shared.

And so thank you for sharing that.

And so now my work is done.

I'm just going to go home right now and not share anything.

But you can see God has already ministered to you.

And whatever God has ministered to you, again, write that down

and be able to go back to it maybe later today or throughout the week.

However God ministered to you so that you can grasp it.

So that truth cannot just ruminate, but that it can actually penetrate your soul

and produce what God wants in your life.

I want to share a couple of observations that stood out to me

and many of the same things that were shared, I will mention as well.

But one of the things that I see here in the passage is this call to trust in God

at all times to trust when there's turmoil to trust when you have adversaries.

To trust when you're tempted with sin or tempted to put your

trust in wealth or in people.

And so there's this call to trust in God at all times.

And so I want us to walk through Psalm 62 a little more.

So let's break it down some more.

Church, are you still with me?

All right.

So let's go back over my soul waits in silence for God alone.

That right there is a powerful phrasing, isn't it?

My soul, my very being.

And this is David who wrote this.

And David was a warrior.

David had many battles.

He was a veteran like Vicky.

And so he was also a king.

And he was a poet.

And he was a shepherd.

And so he had different facets to his life.

So his perspective is always very unique.

And very helpful and vivid in imagery.

And he says, My soul waits.

In silence for God alone to wait in silence means that there's

a confidence that's there.

I'm waiting in silence.

The NIV translated as my soul rest in God.

And so there's this idea that we can rest because we're trusting.

He's trusting that God will deliver.

There's an expectation.

There's a security and an ability to rest in who?

Does he wait silently in, on, and for God and God alone?

And why?

Why can he?

Well, because it's who God is and what God does.

You see, our, our theology, our view of God, our understanding of God

influences our faith, our actions.

Because how we view God will then determine how we

respond to God in his work.

How we respond to his promises.

And so if we view God in a certain way, that will influence what you do.

You guys get what I'm saying here.

And so he says my soul can rest, my soul can be silent.

Despite what's going on because I know who God is and I know what God does.

Because my view of God is that he is a one of salvation, a rock.

He is hope.

And what he will do is he will guard me from being shaken.

It says God alone is the rock, meaning he's a secure place.

God alone is salvation, meaning deliverance, deliverance

literally from the challenges.

And we also know spiritually as well.

He is a stronghold, a high wall, a, a, a, a, a rocky fortress,

meaning protection for him.

And also he would not be greatly shaken.

I might be shaken, but I won't be greatly shaken.

I won't be upended or taken down by whatever is going on.

And he says, God alone will do that for me.

Why?

Because that's who he is and that's what God does for his chosen people.

And we continue and he goes on and he gets real, real honest right here, doesn't he?

He says, man, how long will you attack a man?

He's referring to himself.

He's like, man, how long y'all gonna try to kill a brother?

He's talking about these enemies that are in his life.

And we know David had some serious enemies who were

literally trying to take his life.

Now, I might have some people that don't like me.

But I don't know if I have people that really want to kill me.

And if they do, they just haven't made that known to me yet.

And hallelujah that they haven't made that known to me.

I think that God is protecting my soul if one of you guys wants to kill me.

You gotta work that out with the Lord, okay?

And just don't try it today, all right?

My daughter's birthday's tomorrow.

I gotta be there for her, okay?

But he talks about this reality of having these challenges.

David has some haters, some ops in his life, and he's being real about this.

You know, life's hard when you have relational challenges, isn't it?

Life can become really challenging when you feel like you have enemies

who are trying to take you down.

It doesn't.

You ever feel like you have somebody who's like, man, you

were just trying to take me down.

You're just trying to bring me down.

And this is the turmoil that David is facing as he writes this song.

And you know, when we have these relational challenges or when

we have these, these enemies in our life, what does it do?

It can really steal our joy, can't it?

It can consume us.

It could take away our peace.

It could take away our, our, our, our, our, our sense of well being

because we're consumed by it.

It could tempt us to, or not only just tempt us, it could lead us

to some really bad choices and some sinful actions when we have

these things going on in our lives.

And so what does he say despite all of this that's going on in his life?

What does he say right after this?

He says, my soul, wait in silence for God alone.

For my hope is from him.

He alone is my rock and my salvation, my refuge.

I will not be shaken.

There's things going around me that are trying to shake me.

But I will not be shaken.

My salvation and my glory rest on God.

The rock of my strength, my refuge is in God.

Trust in him at all times, you people.

Pour your hearts out before him.

God is a refuge for us.

And so what happens?

He says, man, I'm in the midst of some turmoil, but I'm reminding

my soul to wait silently on God.

And so my soul can wait quietly because I know who God is.

And I know what God does for his chosen people.

You know, to wait quietly is somewhat easy when things are.

Going well in your life, isn't it?

But when there's turmoil in your life, it's really hard to wait on God silently.

Because what do we want to do?

We want things to happen now.

We want God to deliver us now.

And so if we don't feel or sense He's doing that, then what do we do?

We either get afraid, we doubt, or we take control of ourselves.

And then, that can lead to some poor choices.

And some regrets.

But David waited quietly through a storm that was all around him.

And I believe it was this two part of waiting on God.

It was because he entered truly the presence of God that

allowed him to wait silently.

But in the silence, he also was reminded of God's presence and

God's promises for his life.

You guys get what I'm saying?

And so many times we have to go to God.

In order to silence and quiet our souls.

But in the quiet and silencing of our souls, God ministers to us, reminding

us of his promises of who he is.

Therefore, we can have inner peace despite what's going on on the exterior.

And so we see this idea that again, the presence of God provided inner

peace in spite of external turmoil.

External turmoil.

There's stuff that's going on around and he's like, man, this is real.

It's crazy out here.

But you know what?

Inside I have peace, confidence and rest for my soul.

He says God alone would deliver him from the trouble because God

is the source of protection and God is the source of security.

And he states his reputation as well as his salvation and trusting in God.

He says, he says, my salvation and my glory, my honor.

In other words, in other ways, it can be translated.

He says, man, you know what?

They're trying to attack my, my incessant, my character and my reputation, but you

know, I'm not going to put that on people.

I'm going to rest that upon God and God alone.

He will provide, he will defend.

He.

Will justify.

You know one of the things that God taught me a little while ago is,

God will vindicate the righteous.

He will.

He will vindicate the righteous.

And so sometimes when I'm in some turmoil, I'm reminded, God you're

going to vindicate the righteous.

If I'm righteous right now, it will become clear.

I don't need to fight to vindicate myself before others.

But I want to.

I hope my name and my image is too high, honestly.

And so I want to fight for it, I want to defend it.

But God's like, you don't have to fight that fight, Marcel.

Because if you've been righteous, don't worry, I'll vindicate you.

And if you haven't, then I'll show you where you need to repent and change from.

So you're okay.

You don't need to worry, Marcel.

Trust me.

I got this.

And so we see this psalmist in this waiting and I don't know about you, but

man, it's really hard to wait sometimes.

I thank you Mark and Kerry for sharing that.

I read this quote that was really cool and I want to read this for you.

It says to wait in silence before the Lord is not idleness or inactivity.

We can think waiting on the Lord means I just don't do anything.

I'm just wait.

I'm just going to wait.

Nothing's happening.

I'm just waiting.

And we can misinterpret this.

He says it is calm worship and faith, resting in his greatness

and submitted to his will.

It is preparation for the time when God gives the orders to act.

And so waiting upon the Lord is trusting that he's present,

trusting that he is there.

I'm waiting on his goodness and his timing and he will direct

me when to move and how to move.

To make sure I stay aligned with his will.

That my deeds are righteous and my deeds are accomplishing his

goals and desires, not only for my life, but for those around me.

And so again, we move forward and he says to trust in him at all times,

not just sometimes, not just a few times, not just most of the time,

but to trust in him all the time.

And David now switches from talking about his own to now

encouraging the congregation.

You people, the things that I've learned, trust me, I'm calling

you, trust in God at all time.

And so he's challenging, he's encouraging us to trust in God when there's good,

when there's challenging, and when there's chaotic and uncertain times.

And one way to do this, he guides us is right after that when he says,

and pour out your hearts before him.

You know, we can honestly tell God all that we're thinking and feeling completely

vulnerable in his presence because we know he is our refuge, our place of safety

and shelter, protection and security.

So we can go to God with the good, bad, and the ugly that is in our lives.

And so it's not either or, I'm quiet or I speak up.

No, they both go together.

I know when I was younger in my faith, I didn't want to express

negative things to God in my prayers.

You get what I'm saying?

Like if I was angry, I knew I wasn't having righteous anger, so I didn't

want to talk to God about this.

Now God already knew that I had some righteous anger, but I didn't

want to express that to Him.

Or maybe I was frustrated.

God, why did you let this happen?

I didn't want to share that with him.

God's holy and I don't want to offend God.

But as we see again through the Psalms, is that God actually invites

us to have that open dialogue.

He says, that's actually when I will start to provide this security

and this shelter for you, is when you pour out your soul to me.

And what I've learned is that as I go to God in prayer and as I share,

God, you know, I'm just frustrated.

I'll be honest with you.

I'm not excited.

I'm angry.

And I know that my anger right now is not holy, but I am hot and I want

to do something that isn't good.

And as I express this to God, as I get real, the spirit starts

to minister to me and starts to get me to go from this thinking,

thinking to some righteous thinking.

And so even though I was fearful to come to God with this, God handles

it and then he starts to minister to me and guide me to a place where

I'm humbling myself before him.

I'm gathering myself, I'm getting more clarity on how I need to humble

myself and choose to do what's right.

And I come away with more faith, more hope, and more confidence.

But when I used to refrain from doing that, I didn't experience God as this

shelter, rock, fortress, and stronghold.

And so God is calling all of us, and for some of us, this is really easy.

We go to God and, man, we can just pour out everything.

For some of us, we withhold these things.

Because we think, for some reason, that God either doesn't want to hear

it, or we'll be in violation of His righteousness if we express these things.

But we gotta have a mind change.

God is calling us to pour ourselves out to Him.

So that He can provide the security and refuge that our very soul needs.

Church, do you get what I'm saying here?

And so we can trust God as we go to Him.

Because He declares, I'm a refuge.

I'm a safe place.

I'm a stronghold.

I'm your protector.

I'm your deliverer, and I'm your redeemer.

Come to me.

And when we do, we rest in God.

And now we have a confidence God's gonna work this out.

He's present.

It's who He is.

It's what He does.

I can take a step of faith in Christ now.

And we keep going in Psalm 62 verse 9, Church are you still with me here?

Psalms 62:9

It says people of low standing are only a breath, and people of rank are alive.

Basically he's like, hey you got these quote unquote nobodies and you

got the quote unquote somebodies.

He says it, and he used this imagery of a scale.

And he's like, hey if you put the somebodies and the nobodies,

and you put them on a scale, they would weigh less than vapor.

He's saying, look, you don't want to put your trust in people.

You don't want to put your trust in these things or think it's about this

position or He says, don't even do that.

That's futile.

It doesn't make any sense.

Don't waste your time on that.

And he goes on.

And, uh, he says, don't put your trust in oppression or vainly rely on robbery.

Don't don't go down the route of sin.

Don't violate for the sake of money.

And he says, if wealth increases, do not set your heart on it.

Don't trust in riches and definitely don't go after them in an illegal, immoral way.

And, you know, when we don't trust in God, we can be tempted or even

led to compromise our righteousness.

To gain, we can shade the truth in order to gain maybe a couple more dollars.

We can maybe start to fidget and lie for on our taxes.

Why?

Because we're not really trusting that God will provide.

And we're trusting in our wealth or we're trusting in riches or in possessions.

So therefore what we compromise are integrity and our righteousness.

And so David is saying, don't do such a thing.

Don't set your heart on wealth.

That's not where you rest your faith.

That's not where you put your heart.

And we're reminded of Jesus who says, Hey, life does not consist

in the abundance of possessions.

And he reminds us to seek first his kingdom and his righteousness.

And he will provide.

We continue in verse 11.

He says, God has spoken twice.

I have heard this, that power belongs to God and faithfulness is yours.

Lord, we are reminded here.

He's basically saying, look, God has said it.

We've heard it before.

God has all the power.

God is powerful and he brings us back to promises and God's

truth and this word faithfulness.

The Hebrew word is has said.

And it can be translated as, as merciful or loving or kindness or, or faithfulness.

And so he's saying, God, you have the power, you're faithful, you're

merciful, you're kind and you're loving.

Therefore, I can trust you.

And I can put my trust in you alone.

And then he's reminded, God will judge properly.

God's gonna judge.

I don't need to worry.

God is going to judge because He's a righteous God.

And so, how do we respond from Psalm 62?

I believe one of the things is this, is what it says, is

to trust in God at all times.

To put our trust in God and not in other things or other people,

because those things won't satisfy or produce what our very souls need.

They may provide something temporarily.

Or partially.

Or maybe they serve as a distraction from what's going on in our life.

But they don't provide the soul rest that we need.

Because God is the source of our well being.

Our rest, our stability and our salvation.

Only God can provide the strength during the tough and uncertain times.

So we trust in God alone.

And we do it at all times.

Now this thing is really challenging.

God has been teaching me this over the last several weeks.

Actually at midweek I was talking with, with Mark Barron

and a couple other people.

Couple other people.

And God has been telling me, Marcel, you need to trust me in the moments.

Because I can trust God before something.

God, I trust you.

But then once I get in the moments, then that trust evacuates.

And then afterwards I come back and I'm like, God, I know

you're going to work it out.

But I spent this time and this energy and this frustration in the moment

and this turmoil in my soul because I'm not trusting God in the moment.

You guys get what I'm saying?

I can do this.

This is my challenge.

And so, in fact, I'll share briefly, like, I trust God with my life.

I'm like, God, you got this.

And I go to the doctor the other day because I had set

up and I set up a colonoscopy.

Some of y'all are like, Oh, there you go.

Don't know what a colonoscopy is, ask the person next to you, okay?

And so my dad, so I'm over here feeling good, like, Okay, I got this colonoscopy,

you know, uh, uh, like, I gotta go, I gotta HMO, so I gotta go get approved,

And then, uh, and we're in there with the doctor, And it's real quick, he's

like, Alright, let me ask you a couple questions, Okay, alright, two weeks,

here we go, We're gonna get you on here, you're gonna fast on this, And I'm

like, oh, hold on, brother, We going a little quick here, You know, we talking

about marriage, I need to know your last name, you know what I'm saying?

I'm like, hold on, man, like, wait, this is really happening, huh?

He's like, man, we're going to put you to sleep.

I said, hallelujah.

Okay.

And so I saw myself in a moment.

I'm like, man, I was cool before, but once we got into moments,

I started to lose that trust.

And now I'm a little like, I'm a little wavering, wavering

back and forth on my trust here.

You know what I'm saying?

Because my dad died of colon cancer last year.

And so there's a reality of what's going to happen when I get those results.

What's going to happen?

It's going to show something.

Is it going to be colon cancer, prostate cancer?

I don't know, but now I'm tempted to not trust in the moments.

But God is saying, trust me in the moments.

Trust me in the moment, Marcel.

No matter what the results are, I'm your refuge.

I'm your stronghold.

I'm your fortress.

I'm your deliverance.

I'm your salvation.

I'm with you.

I will be with you.

And I'll provide what's best.

And so now that's my challenge.

But God is saying, Marcel, you can come up with as many reasons not

to trust me, but there's no excuse.

Because you've heard it once and you've heard others say it many times.

That God is powerful and faithfulness is with the Lord.

And so we need to trust wholly in God, but our impatience leads to

dangerous and destructive thinking and sometimes dangerous and decision,

uh, destructive decisions in which we mess up and veer from God's ways.

Brothers and sisters, do you understand what I'm saying?

I read this quote.

I thought it was really good.

It says, God's delays are not God's denial.

God's delays are not God's denials.

So sometimes when we're in the moment, we think God's delays or his denials

saying I'm not going to provide.

And we start to get nervous and we start to get scared and

oh no, so that we doubt God.

I don't know.

I know I read that.

I know I sang that.

You'll do it again.

And Christ alone.

But, but I don't really believe it because it hasn't happened on my time.

And so we take it as God's denials.

But God's just delaying so he could come through.

And it's his timing.

It's not our timing.

He's not on our schedule, but he's always on time.

And so we need to trust that God's delays are not God's timing.

Denials.

And this is why it's so important we keep going back to God's character,

who he is, our view of God.

Because again, if we view God as a stronghold, as a

fortress, then guess what?

We'll have confidence and we'll have rest and we can wait silently in God.

But if we view God as this shaky bridge that we're not going to

cross, I don't know if I can really trust and keep walking.

That bridge looks a little shaky.

That God Almighty seems like the God who's half mighty.

But if we view God as the almighty, then that affects not only our views, our well

being, but then our actions going forward.

So this is why we have to remember who God is and what God does.

And this is again why it's so important, brothers and sisters, that we dig deep

in our personal devotional time with God.

Because God reminds us.

Of who he is and what he does as we consume his word as we

pour out to him in prayer.

God ministers to us and reminds us I'm with you always

trusting me in this situation.

And so this is why we can't have times when we go.

I just give him a little bit or I'll get back to it later.

Now we are so desperately in need of this time with God because this is when we come

back to his truth and to his promises.

And this is why it's so important that we have these relationships, that we

have godly relationships that remind us of who God is and what God does.

I believe it's difficult to do and achieve, but when we have the right

view, then we can remember He is there, He will deliver, and He will provide.

Let's get real practical here.

Alright, brother and sister, are you still with me?

Action steps this week.

Real quickly, read and pray through Psalm 62 every day this week.

Read and pray through.

It says you read it, read a verse and then pray about that verse.

Because you can relate in some form or fashion with every line that's in there.

And so read and pray through Psalm 62.

That could be your quote unquote devotional time or it

could be an additional time.

Whatever the case may be.

But then also, read and pray through Psalm 62 whenever you face a trial this week.

You're gonna face something.

And go back to Psalm 62 and read and pray through it and allow God to minister

to you, to center you so that you can remember to trust him at all times.

Wouldn't you like to have David's trust, confidence, and peace in your life?

Wouldn't you like to have that?

Imagine facing your next trial with a faith that waits in silence for God alone.

Imagine facing your current trial with an attitude that

waits in silence for God alone.

Imagine facing this week with your soul waiting, trusting, resting in

God alone, who is your hope, your rock, your salvation, and your refuge.

We can.

By trusting in God at all times, we're going to close out with communion.

This is a time where we remember we take the emblems that that

symbolizes Jesus's death and burial and resurrection, his body and blood

that was shed for our salvation.

And we are reminded again that it is through Jesus that we can have trust

that we can rest while waiting in silent confidence in God's timing.

And in God's salvation and in John 14, he says this to the apostles and I believe

it's a promise that also applies to you and me today in 2025 and he says, peace.

I leave with you my peace.

I give you.

I do not give to you as the world gives.

Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

Let's pray father.

Thank you so much.

so much for your word.

Thank you for your scriptures.

Thank you so much for Jesus and him embodying what it means to wait upon you.

And father, we're so thankful that because of Jesus and because of the peace that

is provided to us and through Jesus, that we can wait in silence before you.

We thank you for the salvation.

We thank you for the hope.

We thank you for the redemption.

We thank you for the deliverance.

We thank you for the strength.

We thank you for the protection.

We thank you for being our strong and our safety nets.

We thank you for being our God.

Our Father and our friend.

Our hope and our salvation.

And it is through Jesus that we have all this.

Thank you Lord.

for coming to earth.

Thank you for living a righteous life.

Thank you for preaching your word.

Thank you for staying upon the cross.

Thank you for dying.

Thank you for your burial.

Thank you so much for your resurrection and thank you for your

Holy Spirit that indwells within us.

We love you.

We thank you.

We praise you.

We honor you and we ask to guide us to trust in you at

all times in the name of Jesus.
