  1. Talk about a beautiful picture of trusting and

  2. obeying. I may have a pit in my stomach about

  3. inviting someone to our candlelight soup supper

  4. and service this December and think about what

  5. they're doing. Talk about trust and obey, which

  6. is where we're going to go after the sermon.

  7. We're going to sing that song, but... The song

  8. nonetheless has this line in it as we continue

  9. our sermon series in the book of Acts. For there

  10. is no other way to be happy in Jesus but to trust

  11. and obey. I'm going to ask right off the bat.

  12. When you think of the words trust and obey, how

  13. many people equate the word happy with that?

  14. It's about what I thought. Maybe three of you.

  15. Why? Because trusting is very, very difficult.

  16. How do I know? A bunch of you have told me over

  17. the last seven years that trusting people is

  18. not something that comes easy or natural to you.

  19. And usually the reason why, well, let me ask.

  20. Why is it that sometimes trusting people, for

  21. a majority of us, I'd say, and I don't even have

  22. to make that statistic up, for the majority of

  23. us, why is it hard to trust people? We got in

  24. the back. When your trust has been taken advantage

  25. of, or another way of saying it, Nikki, is we

  26. got burned. Okay? Right? There's a little bit

  27. of difference in language there. But when we've

  28. been taken advantage of or burned by trust, I

  29. could probably ask how many of us have ever been

  30. burned or taken advantage of in our trust, and

  31. my guess is all of us would raise our hand. And

  32. if I said how many of that were the people closest

  33. to us, a lot of our hands would stay up. This

  34. understanding of trust, I think our Father in

  35. Heaven knows that, which is why there are over

  36. hundreds of verses that talk about trust. One

  37. is the life verse that I have. It was the verse

  38. that I really kind of got attracted to when I

  39. made Profession of Faith, Proverbs 3, 5, and

  40. 6. Trust in the Lord with... all your heart,

  41. lean not on your own understanding, in all your

  42. ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your

  43. paths, make your paths straight, whatever translation.

  44. And I'd love to say, that's so easy to do, right?

  45. But we all know that's not the case. And for

  46. some of us, we look at the weather and we go,

  47. man, it's just hard to trust anybody. See how

  48. fickle that is? Because it's junky weather out,

  49. we just don't want to be around people. We don't

  50. want to trust people. The only thing we want

  51. to trust is being bedside Baptists and going

  52. back to bed. Now what about obeying? We got trust.

  53. We got obey. That wasn't a shot at Baptist. That's

  54. just the verbiage. Restless reformed. I don't

  55. know. I don't care what it is. Obeying. How many

  56. of us love to obey? Come on, oldest borns. That's

  57. deep inherited in you if you're the oldest born,

  58. right? Oldest born, we only learn it once. I'm

  59. not the oldest born, but I've talked for my sister.

  60. She only had to break the rules a couple times

  61. and she kind of fell in line, right? And then

  62. you got the middle ones who kind of see that

  63. and see the way to kind of... tip -throw through

  64. the tulips, if you will, right? But then you

  65. usually come to fall in line, and then you're

  66. the youngest born. How many youngest borns or

  67. third -borns do we have? You don't think the

  68. rules apply to you, okay? And so you just don't

  69. obey anybody. But obedience, isn't it hilarious?

  70. We have to take our, how many of you have ever

  71. taken a pet, a dog, because if you've taken a

  72. cat to obedience training, never mind. How many

  73. people have ever taken a dog to obedience training?

  74. Right? Those are good dog owners, right? A lot

  75. of you knew us when we first came. We had a dog

  76. named Pierce. Smarter than most humans, right?

  77. I would have a bumper sticker that said, my dog

  78. is smarter than your honor student if I could

  79. have found it, right? That it was he, I mean,

  80. just by a look, he knew what to do. And we call

  81. that a really good dog, right? It's a great dog

  82. when you can just look and they sit. Pierce had

  83. a manipulative side none of you knew about. I

  84. would tell Pierce no about something, he'd go

  85. and literally ask it, not verbally, don't make

  86. it weird, you know, but he would go to Carrie.

  87. Though in front of other people, he put on a

  88. show, behind the scenes, he ran that house. And

  89. how many of you have ever met Annie and Archie,

  90. our dogs now? Absolute idiots, right? Like they

  91. don't do either. They don't trust, they don't

  92. obey. They just... Who knows, right? And our

  93. boys just follow their lead in a lot of ways.

  94. They think rules don't apply to them. Annie,

  95. come here. She runs the other way. But trusting

  96. and obeying, we look for it in our animals. If

  97. you're a parent, you kind of look for it in your

  98. kids, but at the same time, you also kind of

  99. remember what you were like as a kid, and you

  100. have that friction. Yet that was the very first

  101. thing God asked of his, no, not asked, called

  102. of his people. Be holy as I am holy. Knowing

  103. that is an impossible task, but striving for

  104. that and holy, not holier than thou, holy the

  105. way Jesus tells us to be holy, i .e. loving one

  106. another. They will know that you are my disciples

  107. by your love one for another. That is the obedience

  108. of the Lord, the obedience of Christ, to trust

  109. and obey. Sounds simple. Carries a lot of deep

  110. truth. When I have a couple come in for either

  111. premarital or marriage counseling, Because I

  112. offer that. When I do premarital for a couple,

  113. I always offer about a year and a half or so

  114. of marriage counseling. Not because I know everything.

  115. That's not the case. You all know that. But understanding

  116. that there are times your first year of marriage,

  117. that honeymoon phase, things can go awry. You

  118. need an objective third party, someone cheering

  119. you on. Because you may wake up one day and the

  120. wife goes to the husband, I think we should get

  121. a dog. And the husband goes, I hate your mom.

  122. And you're like, whoa, that took a turn. We probably

  123. need to sit down and talk to somebody. Counseling

  124. in that is a good thing. You want to see what

  125. the root of most conflicts in marriage are? A

  126. lack of trust. And a lack of obedience one to

  127. another. A lack of submission, if you will, one

  128. to another. And lack of communication. That would

  129. be the third. It's not easy to do. But in Acts

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  130. chapter 5, the church learns this lesson in a

  131. sobering way, as many times the Israelites did

  132. in the Old Testament, as the disciples did in

  133. the Gospels, as the church will do in the New

  134. Testament. They learn it in a very sobering way.

  135. The Spirit of God is moving powerfully. People

  136. are being healed. We saw that last week. The

  137. gospel is being spread. And the gospel is not

  138. your gospel or their gospel or my gospel. The

  139. gospel is clear. Christ was alive. Christ died.

  140. Christ was buried in a tomb. And he rose again.

  141. He is the Messiah. He is the son of the living

  142. God. So we need to follow his words, as he says

  143. in the Great Commission. But then deceit enters

  144. the story. And this shouldn't be a surprise to

  145. us because it took all of about three chapters

  146. in the beginning of the Bible for deceit to come

  147. upon the people. We've done this before, guys.

  148. We've entered the Garden of Eden. We've had that

  149. conversation. Surely you won't die, Satan says,

  150. Lucifer says to Eve with Adam who was with her.

  151. I always want to point that out. A lot of people

  152. like to blame Eve, but if Adam was doing his

  153. job, I don't think it would have happened. The

  154. seat enters the story. Ananias and Sapphira,

  155. they lie. I'd love to ask how many of you lied

  156. this week, but I'm not going to because I don't

  157. want you to lie in church and not raise your

  158. hand, proving my point. They didn't lie just

  159. to the people, but they lied to God himself.

  160. Their story is shocking, but it's also revealing.

  161. The presence of God demands purity for his people.

  162. God wants the church to be pure. Okay, then why

  163. did you fill it with us? That's a question I

  164. have. Why did you make me the pastor? Because

  165. that's not going to work. But if the goal is

  166. to strive after Christ's holiness, We need to

  167. recognize when they're in the wrong. We need

  168. to offer forgiveness one to another. And we need

  169. to continue to keep walking. Yet the church stifles

  170. that because we don't get our way, because we

  171. don't like what's happened, because this person

  172. said this, or this person thought that, or I

  173. thought this person thought and then said this,

  174. even though it never happened. Yet I will talk

  175. to the elder or the pastor about it without verifying.

  176. And so then we get this huge hornet. That's never

  177. happened here. You see, we make a mess of it

  178. because at the end of the day, we should trust.

  179. It says trust and obey here, but we're going

  180. to set the scene in a minute. We should trust

  181. one another. We should obey Christ and walk together

  182. in obedience. I could stand up here and say,

  183. I'm the pastor. You should trust and obey everything

  184. that I say. But if I did that, none of you would

  185. be a part of this church because that's not a

  186. good way to lead. We need to all be obedient

  187. to the same thing. Because guess what? I'm no

  188. better than you. You're no better than me. Surprise!

  189. But we all fall on our knees at the foot of the

  190. cross and walk it out together. Let's set the

  191. scene. We're going to be in Acts chapter 5. Sorry,

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  192. Acts chapter 4. Yeah, sorry. Thank you, Nikki.

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  193. Yeah, we're going to be in 4 and going into 5.

  194. That's where I got confused. So Acts chapter

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  195. 4, we're going to start with verse 36 and go

  196. to chapter 5, verse 2. Okay? Thus Joseph, who

  197. was also called by the apostles Barnabas, which

  198. means son of encouragement, a Levite, a native

  199. of Cyprus, sold a field that belonged to him

  200. and brought the money and laid it at the apostles'

  201. feet. But a man named Ananias and his wife Sapphira

  202. sold a piece of property, and his wife's knowledge

  203. he kept back for himself some of the proceeds

  204. and brought only a part of it and laid it at

  205. the apostles' feet. So we see the movement of

  206. the church is still very simple. Speak the gospel,

  207. because a lot of these people saw Jesus go through

  208. all the things. They're going to speak that.

  209. They're going to talk, teaching them everything

  210. I have commanded you. Love God with all of your

  211. heart, soul, mind, and strength. Love your neighbor

  212. as yourself. They're going to go to the Beatitudes.

  213. They're going to go to the Sermon on the Mount.

  214. They're going to do the thing, speak those, not

  215. their own words, but Jesus's. But what else were

  216. they doing? They were selling their possessions.

  217. Now the easy thing is, okay, as we go to a potential

  218. building campaign, if we vote, no, I'm not going

  219. to do that. That's too easy and somewhat manipulative.

  220. We're going to talk through what actually happened.

  221. They sold things like property, their possessions.

  222. They were giving it to the movement of the way.

  223. Again, this wasn't Christianity yet. This was

  224. the way of Jesus. And Luke, as he normally does,

  225. sets up a contrast for us. Luke sets up a story

  226. with Barnabas, who gave honestly, and Ananias

  227. and Sapphira, who gave deceitfully. faith. Let's

  228. pause there. Giving out of faith. That's a struggle.

  229. I sat with that for a minute. That when I give,

  230. when we all give to things like missions, we

  231. have faith that the organization, the individuals

  232. are going to use it in the way that they've told

  233. us to and what they've said to the missions committee.

  234. that they're going to use it to further the cause

  235. of the mission of Christ. And when we have organizations

  236. that it's kind of muddy and we don't really know

  237. what the stewardship's like there, guess what?

  238. We pull back and we ask more questions. It's

  239. what the committee does. It's what the elders

  240. do. It's what the deacons do. What the council

  241. does. They work in tandem with missions to make

  242. sure that we are being good financial stewards,

  243. time, talent, treasures of those missions. Well,

  244. Pastor, why do we do this? Acts 5 is why. Acts

  245. 4 and 5 is why. Because I think it's right and

  246. good. This deliberate, what I'm going to call

  247. juxtaposition, Luke's writers are going to put

  248. this at odds, shows that sin is the most dangerous

  249. when it hides under the appearance of godliness.

  250. Let me say that again. That sin is most dangerous

  251. when it hides under the appearance of godliness.

  252. What other good kind of visual? Wolf in sheep's

  253. clothing. Okay? That has to do more with the

  254. leader of it. But first we're going to dive into

  255. the deception, verses 1 and 2. There's a deception

  256. here. Verses 1 and 2. But a man named Ananias

  257. and his wife Sapphira sold a piece of property,

  258. and with his wife's knowledge he kept back for

  259. himself. some of the proceeds, and brought only

  260. a part of it and laid it at the apostles' feet.

  261. If we don't know what Barnabas does, is this

  262. a problem? I'm going to throw it to you. Let's

  263. say we don't find out that Luke's writer doesn't

  264. give us what Barnabas does, and all we get is

  265. this. Let's say we started with this. Is it a

  266. problem? What say you? See? Oh, I didn't tell

  267. him to say that, but that's exactly what I was

  268. looking for. Seems like a tithe. Right? A tenth?

  269. Sure, we could probably say that. I mean, we

  270. don't know that for a fact. He kept back for

  271. himself some of the proceeds and brought only

  272. a part of it and laid it at the apostles. feet.

  273. They sell part of the property, or they sell

  274. the property and bring part of the money, but

  275. here's the thing, while pretending to give it

  276. all. That's the key difference here. That's what

  277. makes this not tithing, even though I would have

  278. said the exact same thing I did when I was working

  279. through it. Like, is this really a bad thing?

  280. I mean, the church is still getting some. Like,

  281. giddy up. Is that the right heart that Jesus

  282. talks about as far as giving? No. The issue is

  283. not withholding. Peter later says the property

  284. was theirs to control, but pretending full surrender

  285. while holding back. The hypocrisy here reveals

  286. the desire for spiritual recognition without

  287. spiritual submission. Let me say that again because

  288. there's kind of some theological terms here.

  289. Spiritual recognition, look at me, without spiritual

  290. submission. Here's my everything. Remember, the

  291. sermon is called Trust and Obey, but we'll get

  292. there. So let's go to verse 3, what I call Satan's

  293. influence. But Peter said to Ananias, Why has

  294. Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit

  295. and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds

  296. of land? Let's put this in our terms right now.

  297. Let's say we find out that, like, I don't know,

  298. that you, in a more grand sense, you win the

  299. lottery. Say, I don't know, $10 million, just

  300. for our purposes today, right? After taxes, let's

  301. just call it five, okay? That what's 10 % of

  302. $5 million? I don't know that math. $500 ,000,

  303. right? And let's say that a check comes in, right?

  304. The deacons see it, and it's 50 bucks. We all,

  305. 50 bucks. Let's say it's $5 ,000. Person just

  306. won 5 mil. I already see it. There's tension

  307. going on. A lot of you, right, are trying to

  308. tense up different parts of your body because

  309. like, oh, pastor, you're treading on money. You're

  310. treading on stuff. Well, the Bible talks about

  311. giving. Now, we'll never ask for your W -2s.

  312. We're never going to be that kind of church.

  313. But understand that it's the trust and the obedience

  314. of the giver in how they worship the creator.

  315. Peter asked, why has Satan filled your heart

  316. to lie to the Holy Spirit? Oof, that hurts. But

  317. think about where we just were two and a half

  318. chapters ago. Wait for the Holy Spirit to be

  319. at work. The Holy Spirit comes in in a very,

  320. very visible way and Pentecost drives the whole

  321. thing. They haven't lost that inertia. They haven't

  322. lost that momentum. The Holy Spirit's the one

  323. doing it. The word filled recalls back to Acts

    Acts 2:4

  324. 2 verse 4 where the disciples were filled with

  325. the Spirit. Now instead of being filled with

  326. God's presence, Ananias is filled with deceit.

  327. Sin even within the church. is a form of spiritual

  328. warfare. There are some of us that are going

  329. to struggle with this text. And that's okay.

  330. Dive into it this week. I'm going to give you

  331. a point of view. Dive into it for yourself. Sin,

  332. even within the church, is spiritual warfare.

  333. So he says, the lie to God, right? Satan, yeah,

  334. he loves it when we lie to each other. Sure.

  335. But what Satan's ultimate goal is, the lie to

  336. God. He tries to discredit God in Genesis chapter

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  337. 3. Same thing going on here. The lie to God is

  338. verse 4. While it remained unsold, did it not

  339. remain your own? And after it was sold, was it

  340. not at your disposal? Why is it that you have

  341. contrived this deed in your heart? You have not

  342. lied to man, but to God. Some of you. are going,

  343. this is uncomfortably hardcore by Peter. I don't

  344. like it. I think that's fair. I think that there's

  345. a rub. There's a friction here, right? You have

  346. not lied to men, but to God. What is he saying?

  347. At the end of the day, if the Barnabas thing

  348. didn't happen, I don't know if the people would

  349. have known. Outside of the people that made that

  350. deal, The real estate agent, or however they

  351. did it in the first century, what the proceeds

  352. were, they wouldn't have known. God does. You

  353. have not lied to men but to God. This is one

  354. of the clearest affirmations of the Holy Spirit's

  355. divinity in the entire scriptures. You have not

  356. lied to men but to God. Remember when we joke

  357. that you try to play hide and seek with someone

  358. that's omnipotent and omnipresent? We can't do

  359. it. Friend, there is nothing that you can hold

  360. and hide that God doesn't know or see. That's

  361. why God says, confess it to me. Confess it one

  362. to another. That's why we do the prayer of confession

  363. and affirmation. To lie to the Spirit is to lie

  364. to God himself. How do we know? Our confessions

  365. help us. Belgian Confession, Article 11, affirms

  366. this truth. The Holy Spirit is true and eternal

  367. God, proceeding from the Father and the Son.

  368. Guess what? The Holy Spirit is still working

  369. in the church. The Holy Spirit has never said,

  370. peace out, I'm gone. No. That will happen when

  371. who comes back? Jesus. Right? And everything

  372. comes to fulfillment, comes to culmination. The

  373. Holy Spirit is still at work. How do I know?

  374. He's gifted all of you. He's gifted the church.

  375. This church has been here for 155 years and no

  376. one is that old here. So you guys have gone through

  377. the generations of spirit -filled lineage to

  378. keep this church open. This church is still moving.

  379. None of you, not your family line, not your family

  380. money, not what you bring to the table, keeps

  381. churches open. Revelation tells us it's the Spirit

  382. of God that keep churches open. How do we know?

  383. Because it's the Spirit of God that blows out

  384. the lampstand when they're done. And if that

  385. doesn't terrify you, it does as your pastor,

  386. so join me, will you, that we want to be faithful.

  387. And there's an immediate judgment. Don't worry,

  388. we'll get to some of the lighter stuff in a second.

  389. There's an immediate judgment starting in verse

  390. 5. When Ananias heard these words, he fell down

  391. and breathed his last. We're not going to read

  392. this if we do a vote for the building. Don't

  393. worry about that. And breathed his last. And

  394. great fear came upon all who heard of it. The

  395. young men rose and wrapped him up and carried

  396. him out and buried him. This is such a weird

  397. story. Immediately she fell down at her feet.

  398. breathed her last. When the young men came in,

  399. they found her dead, and they carried her out

  400. and buried her beside her husband. How are we

  401. feeling right now? Go ahead. It's a weird couple

  402. verses here. I can see why we don't read this

  403. before a congregational meeting. But how are

  404. we feeling? A couple people. What? Scary. Yep.

  405. Anyone else? Inadequate. Boom. Gone. Two people.

  406. One's calling right now saying, don't do it.

  407. Don't do it. Be honest. Trust and obey. Oh, oh.

  408. Well, go ahead, Mike. Go ahead, pastor's kid.

  409. Where's the grace? What? I was tracking with

  410. you before that. Lisa's like, I'm used to it.

  411. But understand, there's an immediate judgment.

  412. Ananias falls dead, and later Sapphira meets

  413. the same end. God's judgment here is what? Long

  414. -suffering? That's exact. Who said that? And

  415. I didn't even tell you I was going to say that.

  416. God's judgment here is swift. But here's the

  417. thing. I had to wrestle with this. Not because

  418. he's but because he is holy. I offer that for

  419. a minute. God's not doing this because he's cruel,

  420. but because he is holy. Their sin threatens the

  421. integrity of the newborn church. If hypocrisy

  422. grows unchecked, the witness of the gospel collapses.

  423. There's a direct tie to hypocrisy, and as one

  424. of the number ones, something I have to keep

  425. in check, as we all do, because what is hypocrisy?

  426. Talking the talk, but not walking the walk. Simple

  427. definition, right? Pharisees, Sadducees, they

  428. were hypocrites. At times, us, we can be hypocrites.

  429. If hypocrisy grows unchecked, the witness of

  430. the gospel collapses. God's plan is never in

  431. jeopardy because God is sovereign and we're not

  432. on his level. But as we see throughout the scriptures,

  433. there can be a fear that grows. And the fear

  434. here is among the church. Verse 11. And great

  435. fear came upon the whole church and upon all

  436. who heard these things. Think about the testimony

  437. of the people in this meeting. Peter and the

  438. rest. These people deceived and they were dead.

  439. And notice, no one shot them. Partly because

  440. they didn't have guns. But no one killed them.

  441. They fell and breathed their last. What does

  442. that tell me? That not a hair can fall from my

  443. head without the will of my Father in heaven,

  444. Lord's day one. That he is my comfort in life

  445. and in death. Well, Jim, I'm not feeling a whole

  446. lot of comfort in this verse. I get that. I'm

  447. with you. Great fear came upon the whole church.

  448. This is the first time Luke uses the word ecclesia

  449. to describe the church. Holiness and community

  450. belong together. Church is not a social club.

  451. It is the dwelling place of God. Belgian Confession,

  452. Article 27. This holy church is not confined,

  453. bound, or limited to a certain place or persons,

  454. but is spread and dispersed over the whole world,

  455. yet joined and united in one and the same spirit.

  456. It doesn't end. This story doesn't end. It continues

  457. because there's things that kind of continue

  458. to go on. You talk about signs and wonders. We

  459. always think that they're happy. We always think

  460. they're good. We always think that they're edifying

  461. to the body. I submit so was this. Ooh, we're

  462. going to struggle with that because two people

  463. are dead. How is death edifying to the body?

  464. Thank God God is sovereign and we're not. Verse

  465. 12. Now many signs and wonders were regularly

  466. done among the people by the hands of the apostles,

  467. and they were all together in Solomon's portico.

  468. None of the rest dared join them, but the people

  469. held them in high esteem. And more than ever,

  470. believers were added to the Lord, multiples of

  471. both men and women. So that they even carried

  472. out the sick into the streets and laid them on

  473. cots and mats, that as Peter came by, at least

  474. his shadow might fall on some of them. So people

  475. also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem,

  476. bringing the sick, those afflicted with unclean

  477. spirits, and all were healed. Man, this puts

  478. in perspective the issues we got going on here.

  479. Or at least it should. I'm not going to list

  480. them all. But friends, we get in each other's

  481. way. Some of us don't like things that are going

  482. on. Some of us with other things we're going

  483. on. Some of us still are wondering why we don't

  484. have the candy monsters to drop candy in. Well,

  485. you haven't been listening. We're not doing the

  486. trunk or treat this year. We're going to do something

  487. else at Christmas. But see where the spirit was

  488. kind of discontent, disagreement, discouragement.

  489. See how that can be the enemy of the church if

  490. gone unchecked? That's why all of those discord,

  491. disagreements, discouragement, all of that can

  492. be resolved by following God's word. So we should

  493. probably trust God's word and obey God's word.

  494. See, it's not some creative title. If we do this,

  495. the church can continue. The story doesn't end

  496. with judgment. It ends with revival. I don't

  497. know about you, but that's revival. It's a beautiful

  498. thing. God's purifying work leads to power. Miracles

  499. continue. The sick are healed. The number of

  500. believers increased. The fear of the Lord does

  501. not crush the church. The fear of the Lord strengthens

  502. it. We should already be there, Munster Church.

  503. We went through Revelation. Seven churches. Not

  504. all of them stay. Some get judged and are wiped

  505. out because they lost their first love, because

  506. they reviled in hypocrisy. They loved it. They

  507. loved saying one thing and doing another, or

  508. doing one thing and saying another. Churches

  509. can make their identity out of those. The Munster

  510. Church, what should we be about? Trusting and

  511. obeying, even when we don't like it. There's

  512. a reason why God is a God of order and not a

  513. God of chaos. He took chaos and created. It's

  514. not our job to do. Our job is to be good stewards

  515. of it. Even the shadow of Peter, one of the weirdest

  516. things in all of Scripture to me, becomes a mean

  517. of healing. Remember Peter? Right? Foot and mouth

  518. Peter? The one that denies his rabbi gets restored.

  519. Now people are like, oh man, only if his shadow

  520. would pass by. I don't like that. That might

  521. be something I talked to somebody about in heaven.

  522. I'm sure it would be a long line to talk to Jesus.

  523. I'll talk to Elijah. That's fine. It's one of

  524. the things I love about what our sign guys did.

  525. Do you guys see the sign? That I don't walk on

  526. water. At first I thought it was a shot for my

  527. swimming ability. It's not. If you can't read

  528. it, our pastor doesn't walk on water, but he

  529. knows someone who does. Guess what? It's none

  530. of you. It's not me. It's Christ. A symbol of

  531. God's mercy flowing through obedience and holiness.

  532. So what do we do with that? Let's land the plane

  533. with these. What does God value in the church?

  534. God values integrity more than image. And this

  535. is coming from a pastor of a growing church.

  536. Friends, I could take credit for all of this.

  537. It would be the dumbest thing I would do. Because

  538. guess what? It would be gone like that. This

  539. isn't... My work? I'm not that good. Neither

  540. are you. This is the work of the Spirit. The

  541. church's witness depends on truth -telling hearts.

  542. God cannot bless hypocrisy. If you've wronged

  543. somebody, seek forgiveness. If they've wronged

  544. you, seek forgiveness. Grace is free, but never

  545. cheap. The cross shows both the severity of sin

  546. and the depth of Christ's love. When grace is

  547. treated lightly, it loses its power. We've talked

  548. about that many times. I've already made this

  549. point. I'm going to bring it up. The Spirit,

  550. guess what, is personal and present. How do I

  551. know? There are so many of you going through

  552. crazy things in your life, and you're keeping

  553. the faith, though it's hard. You're keeping the

  554. faith. Whether a surprise pregnancy or all of

  555. a sudden an illness or something else going on

  556. in your family, you are... clinging to Christ

  557. as your only hope. That is the work of the Spirit,

  558. because you and of yourself would never do it.

  559. Me and of myself, I would never do it. I would

  560. take it on what Jim could do, not what Christ

  561. can do through me. I say this all the time, right?

  562. A holy fear of God leads to a lasting joy. I

  563. don't know about you, but the last seven years

  564. of this church have been a lot of fun. And what

  565. do I say? Let's stay humble. Let's stay excited

  566. and slightly terrified. Where do you think I

  567. get it from? The beginning of the church. Fear

  568. here is reverent awe. The realization that God

  569. who judges sin is the same God who heals the

  570. broken and forgives the sinner. Finally, as we

  571. get ready to sing that last song, obedience invites

  572. power. After the church is purified, the spirit

  573. moves freely. God works through vessels that

  574. trust and obey. For there is no other way than

  575. to be happy in Jesus is to trust and obey. Stand

  576. and let's all pray together. Let's pray our closing

  577. prayer together. Holy God. You are righteous

  578. and full of grace. Forgive us for pretending,

  579. for holding back part of our hearts. Teach us

  580. to trust you completely and obey you fully. Fill

  581. us with reverent awe and deep joy in your spirit.

  582. Make us a people of truth, so your power and

  583. presence may dwell among us. In Jesus' name we

  584. pray, amen. And may the Lord, the giver of life,

  585. the Savior,
