  1. Chesed. We are in the fall, we are in Elpis,

  2. however you want to say the Greek word for hope.

  3. Chesed, that good Hebrew word, back of your throat,

  4. is that steadfast love of God. And we're looking

  5. at this kind of through two different lenses.

  6. We're looking at one through the Minor Prophets.

  7. We did Hosea last week, we're doing Joel this

  8. week. These are all Minor Prophets, mainly because

  9. of the length of the book. You can probably read

  10. all of the Minor Prophets within a half an hour,

  11. 40 minutes or so. They are short. kind of quick

  12. books. These prophets had a job to do. They went

  13. in, did a job, kind of got out. These aren't

  14. the Isaiahs or the Jeremiahs or the Ezekiels

  15. that had much longer sustained kind of prophetic

  16. journeys. And we're looking at a love or a chesed

  17. that restores from the book of Joel. Restoration

  18. is a funny thing. When we think of restoring

  19. something, what do we think of? Again, if you're

  20. a guest here this morning, I like to get a little

  21. bit of interaction because there's a lot of wisdom,

  22. right? A lot of wisdom in the seats and it doesn't

  23. all need to be mine, right? You guys have that

  24. and it's awesome when you guys give and sometimes

  25. it's really funny with some of the things you

  26. say as well. But when you think of the word restoration,

  27. what do you think of? To make new. Absolutely.

  28. Sure. Yeah. What else? HDTV. HGTV, right? And

  29. HD, I guess it's high definition too. HGTV, why

  30. that, Jess? Yeah, all restoration shows, right?

  31. Like Home Makeover, they can do that in an hour,

  32. right? My bathroom took a month, but they did

  33. all that in an hour. Unbelievable, right? What

  34. else? To bring it. Jess, don't try to get on

  35. again. Henry, that was you, right? Kathy, can

  36. you give him a high five? You can be joyful about

  37. giving him a high five. That's your husband.

  38. There you go. All right. See me in my office

  39. afterwards. To bring it back. Wow. I love all

  40. of you. I don't know if anyone's going to top

  41. that, so we're just going to keep going. To bring

  42. it back. Wow. Okay. We're going to bring that

  43. back probably later. What Joel's going to remind

  44. us is that God's hesed is there. God's hesed

  45. is a reminder. God brings his hesed love back

  46. when everything is gone. So let's enter this

  47. space. Really, when someone's in need of restoration,

  48. it's because they've been either beaten down,

  49. they've beaten themselves down, things have broken

  50. down. When I think of restoration, I think of

  51. like a car, right? To restore a car is to make

  52. new, to bring it back to its former glory, if

  53. you will. So let's dive in this intro called

  54. Everything is Gone. Some sins are quiet. Ones

  55. that we could just kind of sneak in or kind of

  56. hide. Some sins are catastrophic. Some of these

  57. consequences of sin tend to creep in slowly over

  58. time. They tear things down little by little

  59. to the point where sometimes we don't even realize

  60. it until that straw that breaks the camel's back

  61. breaks. Other sins arrive like a storm. And leave

  62. nothing standing. Total devastation. But Joel,

  63. this minor prophet, speaks to a people who wake

  64. up one morning to realize that everything is

  65. gone. Again, prophets did not have easy jobs.

  66. A lot of them were known as weeping. Because

  67. they had to weep through what their prophetic

  68. voice needed to say to a people. But God did

  69. the preparation. God did the talking. God brought

  70. the restoration. The prophet was just the vessel.

  71. The people of Israel wake up, their crops are

  72. destroyed, the economy has collapsed, worship

  73. has stalled, and joy completely evaporated. Poof,

  74. gone. And into the devastation, Joel declares

  75. something that I think we need to hear in this

  76. new year, and that is that God's hesed is not

  77. only a love that pursues, like we talked about

  78. last week, it's a love that restores. Hosea showed

  79. us that God chases his wandering bride, us, the

  80. church. Joel is going to show us today what happens

  81. when the damage is done and what God tends to

  82. do. This is a word that Munster Church needs.

  83. Whether individually or collectively, this understanding

  84. about grace. Because that's the other lens we

  85. look at. The minor prophets and the canons of

  86. Dort, one of our confessions that talk about

  87. grace. Grace does not only forgive sin, grace

  88. restores what sin has ruined. When I think of

  89. something ruined, right, I think of something

  90. that ultimately has to get thrown away, discarded.

  91. It's broken beyond repair. It's gone, the former

  92. glory, whatever it is, we need to toss it out.

  93. God doesn't always see it that way. But let's

  94. dive into the devastation first. When sin and

  95. judgment strip everything away. We'll be in the

  96. book of Joel, right? We're going to start in

  97. Joel 1. Joel 1 verse 4. What the cutting locust

    Joel 1:4

  98. left, the swarming locust has eaten. What the

  99. swarming locust left, the hopping locust had

  100. eaten. And what the hopping, keep going, I'm

  101. not done. I don't have it memorized. The destroying

  102. locust has eaten. It's very repetitive. Okay?

  103. Very repetitive. This is, and again, we may look

  104. at this and go, okay, so locust has eaten stuff.

  105. Great. Where are my farmers? You feel this, right?

  106. I mean, do you battle locusts? Grasshoppers.

  107. All right, that's the Hebrew for locusts is grasshoppers.

  108. Good job. Yeah, so, but, I mean, we don't, like.

  109. A locust eats one of my plants. Who cares? But

  110. for a farmer, it's everything, right? When you

  111. wake up and crops are gone, right? I think we

  112. have the Yukons, we have the Smedbergs, right?

  113. There are farmers in the group, so you're going

  114. to get picked on. Anyone else farm and I don't

  115. realize it? And this isn't like you grow plants,

  116. right? I know, wait, Cheyenne, you also have,

  117. I mean, you do a little bit of vegetables, right?

  118. I know. I've eaten those peppers. They're hot

  119. and good. They're great. But you guys wake up,

  120. so we'll go back to Smedberg's and to Yukon's.

  121. You wake up and your fields are completely decimated.

  122. How are you feeling? Bad. Yeah. Yukon's, how

  123. are you feeling? Angry. Yep, absolutely. Destroyed.

  124. Devastated. I think the word restoration for

  125. them means something different. Because they're

  126. looking out at their livelihoods and they're

  127. going, how can we recoup? How can we receive?

  128. How can this be restored? And this is a vision

  129. of Israel. Joel is likely speaking to a post

  130. -exile Judah. That northern people of Israel,

  131. through the exact date, it's debated and it doesn't

  132. matter. What's not debated is that a massive

  133. locust plague has devastated the land. Locust

  134. plagues in the ancient Near East meant total

  135. collapse. These little locusts, or Smedbergian

  136. grasshoppers, they total collapse. Economic,

  137. social, spiritual. A lot of us, we can't... It's

  138. hard to engage that because we don't understand

  139. that mindset. So insert whatever profession you

  140. have, you wake up and it's gone. It is totally

  141. collapsed. So it's funny how if our livelihood

  142. goes away, we collapse economically, socially,

  143. and if we're being honest, spiritually. Grain

  144. offerings and drink offerings have ceased because

  145. there is nothing left. To bring. Let that sit

  146. for a minute. You're feeling bad. You're feeling

  147. angry. You're desperate. Because you have nothing

  148. left to bring. This is not a minor inconvenience.

  149. Like, when I was writing this sermon, I went

  150. to, yeah, when we don't spray for mosquitoes,

  151. it's super annoying. That is not what they're

  152. feeling right now. At all. This is an existential

  153. crisis for Israel. I'm not like making this super

  154. dramatic. This is what they're feeling. This

  155. is what Joel is called to speak into. And Joel

  156. piles on with imagery. The drunkards have no

  157. wine. The priests are mourning. The farmers are

  158. ashamed. And joy has dried up. I've used this.

  159. I've used this analogy before, or this kind of

  160. vision before. I'm going to bring it back because

  161. I think it warrants. It's a little bit of a rabbit

  162. trail. But we all show up on Sunday, right? Let's

  163. say next Sunday. We all show up, and our entire

  164. campus is leveled. The highest point are the

  165. tombstones in the back. How are we feeling? Probably

  166. pretty devastated, right? I looked over at April

  167. and she's like freaked out, right? I think I

  168. would feel that way, right? I mean, we would

  169. feel like what in the world? It would probably

  170. cause us to not only pause, but it would shock

  171. us. It would. This church has gone through that

  172. before. People of this church, how many people

  173. were alive and around when it burned? Only a

  174. handful, right? Right? Some of you, you guys

  175. were there. And some of you are like, wow, this

  176. church burned? Yeah, after church. Go look. There's

  177. pictures of it right there. Joel does something

  178. important here, right? He refuses to minimize

  179. the devastation. He refuses to just kind of pet

  180. them like, it's going to be okay. He doesn't

  181. minimize it because grace does not begin with

  182. denial. In order for this understanding of grace

  183. to really be implemented, we'll get there in

  184. a second, this chesed love does not pretend everything

  185. is fine. And for a lot of us, we like to do it.

  186. It's going to be fine. We're good. It's going

  187. to be fine. Everything's okay, right? That is

  188. a way to try to mask denial in your situation.

  189. And here's the thought. Joel interprets the disaster

  190. theologically. This isn't random. This isn't

  191. like, wow, that was a bad day. Wow, that's just

  192. bad luck. Or it's just the climate. No, he looks

  193. at this as a wake -up call from God. Verse 15,

  194. alas for the day. The day of the Lord is near.

  195. The day of the Lord is not just future judgment.

  196. It is God breaking into history to confront sin

  197. and call his people back. Here is another week

  198. wrecker, right? Evan and the team gave us that

  199. song. I'm giving you another one. The day of

  200. the Lord can happen in your life tomorrow. The

  201. day of the Lord can happen in your life this

  202. afternoon. It might be happening to you right

  203. now. That the Lord is coming in. He's breaking

  204. into your history to confront your sin and call

  205. you back. And that's the call. Right? We're going

  206. to jump into Joel 2. The call is return to me.

  207. It's a grace that summons repentance. That word

  208. summons is important. Right? Summons, to me,

  209. goes to that legal thing, right? You get a summons,

  210. you have to show up to court. I think that's

  211. how that works, right? Garrett, is that how that

  212. works, if you get a summons? He's not here, but

  213. Amy, you're married to him, right? You get a

  214. summons, right? There's that lawyer, you know,

  215. two become one. But understand, that's not like,

  216. I'm not going to go, because I think that's when

  217. the bounty hunters come after you. I probably

  218. have that wrong, it doesn't matter. But understand

  219. that when you're summoned, you have to respond.

  220. And this is God summoning, right? This is grace

  221. that summons repentance. Let's go to Joel 2.

  222. Joel 2 says, Yet even now, remember those three

  223. words, declares the Lord, return to me with all

  224. your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with

  225. mourning, and rend your hearts and not your garments.

  226. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious

  227. and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in

  228. steadfast love, abounding in chesed, and he relents

  229. over disaster. This is one of the most gracious

  230. yet statements. found in Scripture. Everything

  231. is ruined. The people deserve judgment. Yet even

  232. now, God speaks. And notice, notice this morning,

  233. God calls for three things. He calls not for

  234. outward religion alone. He doesn't care about

  235. the outward right now because when God is summoning,

  236. when grace is summoning repentance, it doesn't

  237. care about the outward. This is going right to

  238. the soul. He's not calling for surface level

  239. regret because let's be honest, surface level

  240. regret for us is I'm sorry I got caught. He's

  241. not looking for religious performance. God is

  242. calling for true Not repentance, an inward turning,

  243. not a staged display, which we all get PhDs in.

  244. We love to put it on the outward, right? We love

  245. to just, you know, the outward's all good, right?

  246. We can put that face on, we can paint that face,

  247. we can mask it, we can project it, but God is

  248. not worried about the outward right now because

  249. the outward's been destroyed. It's the inward

  250. that God is working at. Grace 101 this morning.

  251. That repentance is a gift of grace. So this is

  252. head three and four, line three. Humans are incapable

  253. of true repentance on your own. Type A alphas,

  254. we don't like this. I want to have control over

  255. my repentance. We can't do true repentance on

  256. our own. We don't have it in us to do it. Second,

  257. that God regenerates the heart, making repentance

  258. possible. That God's going to go into the heart

  259. and he's going to till that soil. He is going

  260. to tenderize the heart to receive his message.

  261. And for some of us, which is crazy, we don't

  262. like that because that means we're not in control

  263. of our own emotions. Friend, we shouldn't be.

  264. If God's the one that created your emotions,

  265. God's the one that can set it in the right place.

  266. Joel's not preaching moral reform. He's preaching

  267. grace -enabled repentance. Repentance is not

  268. the price we pay to earn restoration. Repentance

  269. is the door God opens so we can actually receive

  270. it. Let me say that again. Repentance is not

  271. the price we pay to earn restoration. Repentance

  272. is the door God opens so we can receive it. This

  273. is hesed in focus. Joel anchors his call to repentance

  274. in God's character. For he is gracious and merciful,

  275. slow to anger abounding in hesed. This is covenant

  276. language straight from Exodus 34. God's hesed

  277. is the reason repentance is possible. You cannot

  278. repent unless God loves. Did you ever think about

  279. that? That God loves you. God wants that relationship

  280. with you. God is desiring you and he wants you

  281. to desire him in a way that is holy. In a way

  282. that is not wrought with sin. God does not say

  283. return because you've proven yourself. He says

  284. return because I am who I am. I am. Sit in that

  285. one with me for a second. God does not say, hey,

  286. you've worked on yourself enough. You are not

  287. worthy enough. You've proven yourself to return

  288. back to me. No. God says return because I am

  289. who I am. But there's the turn, right? The turning

  290. point. God responds to repentance with compassion.

  291. We're going to continue in Joel 2. Then the Lord

  292. became jealous for his lands and had pity on

  293. the people. The Lord answered and said to his

  294. people, Behold, I am sending to you grain, wine,

  295. and oil, and you will be satisfied, and I will

  296. no more make you a reproach among the nations.

  297. This verse marks the turning point in the entire

  298. book. And again, it's not that long, but it's

  299. the turning point. God seizes people, not with

  300. irritation, but with compassion. The word jealous

  301. here is covenantal. Where else do we hear that?

  302. For I am a jealous God, returning the iniquities

  303. of the generations of those who hate me. Where

  304. is that found? We read it most of the time, last

  305. Sunday of the month. Ten commandments. God, this

  306. jealousy is covenantal. It is jealousy of a God

  307. who refuses to abandon his people. Refuses to

  308. abandon his people for more destruction. Now,

  309. some of you are struggling, like, well, isn't

  310. he the one bringing it? So why is he like, he's

  311. a flip -flopper. Careful. God is God. We are

  312. not. Right? This is a judgment. We don't like

  313. that word. We don't as a church. We don't as

  314. a people. Who are you to judge me? And you're

  315. right. I should not judge you. You should not

  316. judge me. Yet, we do it all the time. We should

  317. hold each other accountable, right? When we see

  318. something going on, brother to sister, sister

  319. to sister, brother to brother, you know, pastor

  320. to church, church to pastor, elder, deacon, everybody.

  321. We hold each other accountable, but we're never

  322. up here. We love to do that. But as I said, a

  323. stance over someone is not a stance of Christ.

  324. Guess who can judge? God. The creator. The sustainer.

  325. The judge. If he's called to judge, guess what?

  326. He gets to judge. God's jealousy is not an insecurity

  327. of his. This is hesed in action. It's a fierce

  328. love that moves towards restoration. And we see

  329. it. We see it kind of visually, and I can appreciate

  330. that as someone who needs it. The promises begin

  331. to be poured back out where they didn't have

  332. any. They have grain and wine and oil restored.

  333. Their shame has been removed. The fear is now

  334. replaced with joy. This is a staggering promise.

  335. Let's go back to our farmers. However long, you

  336. then wake up and your fields are full. What are

  337. we thinking? We had anger and it's a bad situation.

  338. Help me out, guys. Now what are you feeling?

  339. Amazing. Joy. Did I tell you guys what to say?

  340. No, the answer to that is no. Okay. I will restore

  341. you the years that the swarming locust has eaten.

  342. I will restore. Not just crops. Not just resources,

  343. years. This is a grace that rebuilds what sin

  344. destroyed. So now we're in the muck. Now we're

  345. in the mire. Now we're in that sin that's been

  346. realized, received, and now we need to reject

  347. it. Friends, we need to reject sin, yet we love

  348. it and we do it. and we live in it, but we need

  349. to reject it. This is one of the most hope -filled

  350. verses in the entire New Testament. God does

  351. not say, I will give you something new to distract

  352. you from the loss. He says, I will help you cope

  353. with what's gone. I will restore. This is chesed.

  354. This is grace. Grace 201. The canons of Dort

  355. teach us that God's grace does not merely rescue,

  356. it sustains and it renews. Verses 1 -3 of head

  357. 5. Believers may fall into serious sin, but God

  358. preserves them. Head 5 -7. God renews repentance

  359. and restores fellowship. Leave that one up there,

  360. Cheryl. If we are renewed, We've repented that

  361. restoration. It doesn't happen like that. It's

  362. over time. What sin has destroyed over time,

  363. yes, God can make new in the moment. 20 years

  364. into this, 40 years into life, that takes time.

  365. Because guess what we tend to fall back into?

  366. Our sin. Even the sin we just repented from,

  367. even in our restoration, we can fall back into

  368. that sin. But what does the canons teach us?

  369. That God renews repentance, restores fellowship.

  370. Yes, even the person in this room that has burned

  371. you. Even that person that you have burned. Fellowship

  372. can be restored. We can all worship again together.

  373. Does that happen practically? Not all the time.

  374. Not all the time. Sometimes that's because of

  375. the level of the sin that we either caused for

  376. somebody or they caused on us. But Joel here

  377. shows God's chesed. God's chesed meets us in

  378. the devastation. He calls us, summons us back

  379. to repentance. He rebuilds what sin and judgment

  380. have torn down. You're not building it. Balcony

  381. folk, you're not building it. Church virtual,

  382. you're not building it. I'm not building it.

  383. Elders and deacons aren't building it. Pledge

  384. drives aren't building it. Plans, visions, missions

  385. aren't building it. God's the one that builds

  386. it back up. Why? Because grace isn't fragile.

  387. Grace is not temporary. Grace is restorative.

  388. To go back to Henry. Henry, what did you say

  389. in the very beginning? What does restoration

  390. mean to Newt? It brings it back to a God who

  391. always has been. Grace isn't fragile. It's not

  392. temporary. It restores. It brings it back. Joy

  393. restored. God dwells among his people again.

  394. Joel's restoration ends with worship. I love

  395. that. And I love that because it reminds me I

  396. need to do that more. There are times, yeah,

  397. I'll walk through a situation. I'll walk through

  398. a season of life. I'll repent of it. I'll work

  399. through restoration. And I... Just sit there

  400. and go, and my pessimistic mind, some of you,

  401. glass full, right? A lot of you, optimistic people.

  402. Some of you, pessimistic people, you know, glass

  403. half empty. Mine, glass falling over. And sometimes

  404. I just sit there and I go, Lord, thank you for

  405. bringing me through that. I know I'm going to

  406. fall into it again. And I think that's probably

  407. a lot of us. And I think part of that is because

  408. we don't trust ourselves. I'm a pastor. I know

  409. God's grace is abundant. His mercies are new

  410. every morning. Like, I get all of that. I get

  411. all of that here. Heck, I probably even get that

  412. here. But I just don't trust me. Joel speaks

  413. into that as well. He is restoring me just as

  414. he is restoring you. And that restoration takes

  415. time. Because I know that I know that I know

  416. when I'm met with that temptation again, there's

  417. going to be a lot of me that wants to go right

  418. into the sin. When God's going, no, go left into

  419. my grace. But instead of just sitting and dwelling,

  420. what if I turn that dwelling and that mourning

  421. into worship? Because guess what? We feel better

  422. when we worship. Right? We should. And if you

  423. get so upset because that song wasn't done by

  424. organ, you're making the song about you, not

  425. about the song and worship, just like we do both.

  426. Find joy in the words. Find joy in the singing

  427. of understanding what God is doing. You can do

  428. that with the organ. You can do that with the

  429. drums. You can do that in your car by yourself.

  430. And that's okay too. If we respond to that restoration

  431. with worship, guess what? We're creatures of

  432. habit. We're going to want to do that again.

  433. Right? It's why we call camp highs, camp highs,

  434. retreat highs, retreat highs, conference highs,

  435. conference highs. Right? It's not because you

  436. go there and smoke, but it's because of the joy

  437. of the Lord coming to you. I remember growing

  438. up, I had camp highs all over the place. Right?

  439. You get done with a week of camp, Camp Manitoba,

  440. you want to take on the world. I wanted to go

  441. around and just beat the devil wherever he was.

  442. Probably look like a psycho doing it, but guess

  443. what? High school, junior high, high school gym,

  444. two weeks later, oh, she's cute. Wait, God, you

  445. restored me from that? Don't care. We can't live

  446. in that high and the low because God is everlasting

  447. upon everlasting. I'm trying to do it by my strength.

  448. That's never it. Joy is restored because of God,

  449. not because of us. The ultimate sign of restoration

  450. is not prosperity. It's renewed praise. You go

  451. through that low economic time in your life.

  452. You miss a payment. All of a sudden you get those

  453. collector calls and you freak out. And then something

  454. happens, whether you can explain it or not. It's

  455. usually God anyway, right? And all of a sudden

  456. you've made it through. Guess what we tend to

  457. do? Go back to worrying about when it's going

  458. to happen again. What Joel is reminding us is

  459. don't live in that. Live in the restoration that

  460. God has done it. We should praise him. Oh, and

  461. here's a little rabbit trail. And I'm saying

  462. this first to me. I even recognize at times that

  463. it's God giving me that. That that praise, wow.

  464. And I have the audacity to say, God, when you

  465. bless me next time, can you bless me with more?

  466. I'm glad you're laughing at me because we do

  467. that, especially those that have been in the

  468. church for a long time. Or, and this is just

  469. coming to me now, we have the audacity to look

  470. at the blessing and go, that's it? Friend, Jim,

  471. me, we can't go there. We can't go there. Right?

  472. Let's say we get the $2 million in a couple weeks.

  473. I'm going off book. I apologize. Praise the Lord.

  474. Job's not done. Right? We're not going to show

  475. up the next Sunday and boom, there's the new

  476. building. No, there's a lot more things that

  477. we have to work through. Let's turn it the other

  478. way. Two weeks, the $2 million's not there. What

  479. do we do? Do we just shut it down? Do we just

  480. come in and our anger, our disappointment just

  481. takes sledgehammers to everything? No. No, we

  482. sit and go, okay, God, if not here, if not now,

  483. what? Because is God caged by our $2 million?

  484. Never. Is God bigger than $2 million? Oh, yeah.

  485. And we worship. And we praise. Last Sunday of

  486. this month, if the money doesn't come in, are

  487. we going to shut down worship? If we ever do

  488. that, we just shouldn't be a church. Because

  489. we are now conditional to that junk. And that

  490. should never be the case. Because what Joel is

  491. teaching, right, what the ultimate sign of restoration

  492. is, is renewed praise. Joel 2 .27, you shall

  493. know that I am in your midst. That's the heart

  494. of hesed. It's not gifts. It's not just blessings.

  495. It's God himself dwelling with his people. God

  496. will dwell in us whether we're worshiping here

  497. in a bigger building or we're worshiping in a

  498. strip mall somewhere. They started the church

  499. there. They started it in a local business in

  500. Munster. It wasn't in a building, but it grew

  501. and it grew and it grew. Great. This points us.

  502. God himself is dwelling. Remember, this is Old

  503. Testament. And what these prophets are doing

  504. is they're pointing to New Testament. They're

  505. pointing to Jesus, the outpouring of the Spirit,

  506. Pentecost, and ultimately Christ dwelling with

  507. his church. So where do we go from here today,

  508. friends? What does Joel teach us about living

  509. out this hesed today? First, God can restore

  510. what you thought was gone forever. Here's a list.

  511. I'm just going to welcome you to it. Some of

  512. you today are carrying regret, spiritual dryness,

  513. relational fracturing, lost years, seasons marked

  514. by failure. And what Joel declares over you today,

  515. no loss is beyond the reach of God's restoring

  516. grace. Second. Repentance is not shame. It's

  517. hope. Repentance is not God rubbing our nose

  518. in the failure. That's what we think God does.

  519. And maybe if you need that, maybe God rubs that

  520. a little bit. Maybe God meets you there and goes,

  521. okay, if you need to sit in that, sit in it.

  522. But I'm sitting in it with you. Repentance is

  523. not God rubbing our nose in failure. It's God

  524. opening up the door. For renewal. It's God looking

  525. at you in the midst of your sin and saying, I

  526. did not create you for that. This is so much

  527. better. Third, restoration leads to worship and

  528. gratitude. Grace that restores produces a life

  529. of praise, humility, obedience. God brings you

  530. through that season, write a song. That's what

  531. the Psalms are. Write a song. Maybe you're the

  532. only one that will ever see it, but write it

  533. out to God in a song of praise, in a song of

  534. heartache. Fourth, the church must, must be a

  535. place of restoration. If God restores his people,

  536. all of us, Church virtual, if God restores us,

  537. what does this mean? Oh, here's the final week

  538. record. We must be patient with one another.

  539. We must be slow to write people off. But pastor,

  540. they hurt me. They stabbed me in the back. They

  541. stole from my business. They hurt my family.

  542. Doesn't God have the right to do that for us?

  543. Doesn't he ultimately, can he ultimately say

  544. to us, Munster Church, you put my son on a cross?

  545. But he doesn't, so we shouldn't. Third, if God

  546. restores his people, we must be eager to walk

  547. with repentant sinners. Everybody look to your

  548. right, not awkwardly. Everyone look to your left.

  549. Everyone look behind you. Some of you tried to

  550. do that without actually moving. That was awkward.

  551. Everybody look here. We all walk together. This

  552. is what hesed looks like in the midst of community.

  553. And those two words, and I'm going to end it

  554. here, even now. If Hosea teaches us that God

  555. pursues us when we wander, Joel teaches us this.

  556. Even now. after the damage, after the loss, after

  557. the failure, God's hesed still speaks. The candidates

  558. at Dort remind us today that repentance is God's

  559. gift, restoration is God's work, and perseverance

  560. is God's promises. And hear this. If you don't

  561. hear anything else, hear this. That is good news

  562. for a church on a journey. Yet even now, return

  563. to me. That invitation will always be available.

  564. Let's pray.
