GEMS Sunday 2026

It's a wonderful song. It's a wonderful reminder

that we will follow, that our hearts cry out.

I will follow you. But I questioned this morning,

will we? Do we? That song talks so openly and

freely about following God, trusting God, that...

Hopefully, in life, when we have to follow people,

you know, I think of maybe when we're a kid and

we're going on a hike or a walk with your parents,

right? They're hoping that, you know, you're

going to follow them. I can think back of parts

of my life where it seemed maybe five different

times in my 41 years where the path was so clear.

It was just God saying, hey, jump into the footprint

right after I step. Don't go right, don't go

left, just follow me. I tell our leaders all

the time, staff, council, ministry leaders, that

especially staff, that part of your living on

staff, when you get a paycheck from the church,

it's we're paying you to be a leader. And if

you're out there by yourself and no one's following

you, we're not paying you to go for a walk. That

there is an understanding of following and leading.

Good followers have a leader we hold to a leader

that is Jesus and that song declares I will follow

and it's awesome But what about when we don't

what about we see God moving we see clearly and

we just Step on the brakes or we veer right or

we veer left Because where we see God going doesn't

make any sense to us or it makes sense We just

don't want to do it or if we're being honest

We're scared to do it. There is fear Doubt sets

in all of a sudden we're questioning is God the

person we want to follow and things start to

unravel And there are some Sundays. We just simply

need to be reminded of who we're called to be

and that's this Sunday That's today simple message

on not so simple of a text of what does it mean

to trust God. Trusting the God who holds the

water of life. Because when you look at the gems

you're not just looking at a ministry you're

looking at a movement of faith being formed in

real time. That these girls and these leaders

were preparing for today to have their gems Sunday.

We see young hearts learning to trust learning

to step out learning to follow Jesus in ways

that are very simple at times maybe not so simple

at other times but very profound that the spirit

is at work in our gems ministry we're reminded

that faith is not something we graduate from

but something we grow into we never graduate

God right we never get to throw our faith caps

in the air until we get to glory And there, biblically,

there's nothing that says we're going to have

a cap that we can throw up in the air. But we

will hopefully hear those words, well done, good

and faithful servant. That is the beauty of gems.

That is the foundation that they're building.

to meet the Savior. First and foremost, who is

the Savior? Before you can follow, you need to

understand who He is and what He's calling. of

not only them, not only the leaders, but for

us. And so today, we're going to talk about stepping

out to trust our faithful God. Not just the gem's

theme, but the call of everybody that claims

Jesus. Because the life of faith has never been

about staying in the boat. The boat's comfortable.

We love the boat. But what we're going to see

in the Gospel text is when Jesus calls us outside

of the boat, to trust in Him alone, like we just

sang. So the question before the gems, before

us, before those online this morning is can you

walk on water? The question really becomes do

you trust the God who holds you and holds the

water? So let's break it down first in Deuteronomy,

the foundation beneath every step we take. So

we're going to be in Deuteronomy 7. 7 verse 9.

Know therefore that the Lord your God is God,

the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast

love with those who love him and keep his commandments

to a thousand generations. So right there we're

going to lay the foundation. A God who loves

you who is faithful and who keeps covenant. We

know what that means. We've talked and walked

that out. Covenant and contract, two different

things. Contract says, if you don't do your part,

I don't do my part. Covenant says that God will

keep His part even when we fall in ours. But

the word no there matters. God is not inviting

His people into this vague spirituality or emotional

guesswork, the highs and lows of our emotions.

He is calling us into certainty. And just that

word can bind all of us. Whether you're young

in faith, maybe you're here and you don't really

have a faith, the idea of having a certainty

about the person of God can be hard to really

walk that road, hard to understand. But what

we're going to learn today, what the gems have

showed us is what it means to step out into confidence

that God has us. We're confident in who He is.

The Lord your God is God. So another question

I have this morning is do you believe that? Do

you believe that in how you think about God?

Do you believe that in how you talk out God in

your life? Do you believe that in what you actually

believe about God? Do you trust He is sovereign?

He is unchanging. He is not reacting to your

life. He rules over it. That's his prerogative.

That's his point of view. And my guess is at

least half of us struggle with that because we

want to be the master of our own ship. We want

to be in the control of our own life. We want

to call all the shots. But guess what? We're

following the sovereign God. Meaning, you and

I aren't sovereign. We can't handle that anyway.

We might think we can. We might act like we can.

Deep down inside of the Places we don't talk

about at parties, we probably think we are. We're

not. And it is easier to submit to that. The

faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast

love. The phrase steadfast love is the Hebrew

word... Someone said it over here. Hesed. One

out of 315. Good job. We had a whole sermon series

on it. Right? Say it gutterly. How do we say

it, Alex? Get it in the throat. Stop laughing.

Say it. Chesed, right? It gets really deep down

in your throat, right? Good Hebrew. It's covenant

love, loyal love, unbreakable love. It is the

kind of love that does not walk away when things

get hard. It's not the kind of love that depends

on our performance, praise the Lord. It is the

kind of love that holds on even when we don't.

And this is what GEMS, the program, was teaching

our girls this year. Through gems they are not

just learning the Bible stories, but they are

learning about the character of God through gems

They are learning that God's faithfulness is

not theoretical up in the clouds, but it's deeply

personal Not our strength not our courage not

our ability to hold on to God, but his unwavering

grip on us the Belgian confession One of the

confessions we have in the church, our confessions

help us understand scripture, right? The Heideberg

Catechism, the Belgian Confession, the Canons

of Dort. We hold these writings, not sacred,

but we hold these important in our life. We hold

them confessionally to help us understand God's

Word. Without God's Word, none of those texts

mean anything. But the Belgian Confession reminds

us that even after humanity fell into sin, God

pursues his people. He did not abandon them.

He didn't say, well, they screwed up, they're

done, over, let's start fresh. He did not wait

for them to figure it out. He moved toward them

in grace. So church, gems, hear this clearly

today. You don't step out just because you are

brave. You step out because God is faithful.

When we step out in our life, we are banking

on that relationship with God, not only being

there, but that he is holding us as we step out.

And this is the foundation that GEMS is laying

through the lives of all the young girls that

go through it. A foundation that will carry them,

hopefully, not just through childhood, not just

through that journey through junior high when

they get to eighth grade, but through every season

of life. That all of you, whether you're in second

grade through eighth grade, when you get older,

right, even a couple years maybe into high school,

we come back and we help with our GEMS program.

Or if God moves you away somewhere else in the

world, maybe you find a GEMS program there. And

we dive in and we invest in the next generation.

Every season of life, we want this to be not

only true, but we want to understand that God

is really faithful to us and will call us at

times to things that we are very, very, very,

very, very uncertain about. Maybe even scared

about. So let's dive into the book of Matthew.

We're going to be in Matthew 14 with this section

of my sermon is called The Voice That Calls Us

Out. We're going to be in Matthew 14 starting

with verse 22. But the boat by this time was

a long way from land, beaten by the waves, for

the waves was against them. And in the fourth

watch of the night he came to them walking on

the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on

the sea, they were terrified and said, It is

a ghost. And they cried out in fear. But immediately

Jesus spoke to them saying, Take heart. It is

I. Do not be afraid. Peter answered him Lord

if it is you command me to come to you on the

water and He said come so Peter got out of the

boat walked on the water and came to Jesus So

let's set the scene Middle fourth watch the night

early in the morning, right? How many fishermen

or fisherwomen do we have today that like to

do that? Wow, that's it. We got a fish more Jim.

There's you're one of only like two that did

it We love to eat the fish, but we don't like

to Never mind. So we are at fourth watch of the

night, right? The boat is way far out. Jesus

was just praying. It's dark. The wind's against

them. The waves are crashing, and I'm going to

offer just a little Pastor Jim point of view.

I would be terrified because the depths of the

ocean, even though we're talking about the Sea

of Galilee, not the ocean, but I'm sure there's

depth to it, absolutely terrifies me. yet I'm

fascinated about what could be under there I

don't like to go into bodies of water that I

cannot see the bottom of i .e. a pool or shallow

Caribbean that's it right other than that if

I can't see the bottom of it I will probably

stay on the land but it is dark the waves the

wind and waves are against them And Jesus, in

typical Jesus fashion, comes walking out to them

on the water. And instead of comfort, they feel

fear. It's a ghost, they said. I don't know if

they couldn't recognize him, I don't know, but

in the midst of their chaos, the boat being thrown

around by the winds and the waves, they seem

to maybe forget who Jesus was, or that Jesus

has got them, right? He's got their back. He's

the one that told them to go out. So they're

following their disciples commands. Yet fear

has a way of distorting reality. It takes what

is true and twists it to something that might

even be threatening in our life. Maybe you've

been there in life. That you feel good about

a certain aspect or relationship or season of

your life. Yet when the minute you allow fear

or trepidation or anxiety in there, everything

binds. Everything seems to twist out of whack.

And then all of a sudden what happens? I don't

know if God's really in this. I don't know if

this is really God's plan for me. Maybe I don't

have... All of a sudden the domino effect that

Satan pushes starts to take hold. We know this

feeling. Because fear tells all of us, not just

to the gems, but to all of us, stay where it's

safe. Don't take the risk. Don't step out. Then

Jesus speaks Take heart it is I do not be afraid

that phrase it is I echoes God's covenant name

I am Jesus is not just offering reassurance.

He is revealing to them again his identity now

Put yourself in the boat. I don't care any one

of the 12 your pick you're in the boat. You see

this What's the first thing that you should be

astonished by? Anybody? You're in the boat. You're

seeing Jesus do this. Yeah, go ahead. What are

you astonished by? He's walking on water. 1 ,000%.

That is the only right answer, right? That he

is walking on water. Like, that should blow all

of our minds. Whether you are more into the sciences,

analytics, you're like, that can't happen and

here's why, push up your glasses. Or you're just

freaked out and go, holy cow. Like, what is he

doing? How is he doing that? Or like me, maybe

I can do it. I would totally be a Peter. You

don't need to say amen. We all understand that.

Here I am. I am God. You can trust me. Is that

not some of the most reassuring aspects of Jesus?

But what's the hard part about being able to

really believe that? I can trust in God, right?

But what if I don't trust easy? What if my trust

has been broken? What if I've been burned by

Christian people or the church or whatever? And

so I don't trust easy. How can you say that I

trust the Lord? Well, let me punk you out a little

bit this morning stop putting people on the same

place as God or the other way around stop bringing

God down to the same people that are in your

life because there's one key difference all the

people in your life your pastor the elders gems

gem program cadets everybody all sinners in need

of a Savior guess who's sinless the Savior and

That's who we're talking about. We're talking

about Jesus So Peter again in typical Peter fashion

Lord if it is you You ever catch that? If it

is you, does not show me like super devotion.

How do I know? Let's put this in maybe with your

spouse. If your spouse ever says to you, if you

really love me, then you will... Give me some

endings of that sentence. Be careful, don't incriminate

yourself. If you love me, you will... Mike, go

ahead. I know already 19 things came into your

brain. What? Oh, way to keep it safe. Good job.

Mow the lawn. Yeah. And we all know you have

sons. You make them do it. You haven't mowed

a lawn in years. But understand, right, if you

love me, you will... Someone go a little deeper

than lawn, please. What? Stop snoring. How is

that above or below mowing the lawn? Father,

we pray for the van der Meijens right now. We

pray for Brad. We pray for his deviated septum.

What was over here? If you love me, someone said

a good one. Follow, right? So if your spouse

says that, if you love me, then follow me. How

are you really taking that, Marilyn? Everybody

look at her. You said it. That's sometimes easy,

sometimes hard, right? There was a time on our

trip out West to be about a year and a half ago

When how many people know what a ridge back is

on when you're coming up to a mountain right

Wendy? What's a ridge back? Yes, when you go

up a ridge back good all right That's exactly

what it is. It's when you go up, and there's

really nothing on the sides It's like this land

bridge right and there's a pretty famous one

in southern Utah that I really wanted to go on

regardless of if my wife said she didn't want

to. And so the boys and I, we kind of, you know,

we were at dinner and we asked about it like,

oh yeah, as long as you're in daylight, right,

as long as, you know, it hadn't rained, then

you are good to go. Okay? Yeah, it might have

just rained, but it was still gonna be, it was

still gonna be light. We never asked how long

it actually takes to get there and that was the

error in the story And they're not here today

So I'll blame Jack and so understand that we

start on this what I thought was gonna be immediate

Ridgeback It was not hour and a half later son

has now gone down. We finally get to the Ridgeback

My wife through is not speaking to me. Okay at

this point. She is so upset I thank God the kids

are playing one fell asleep in the back. I am

praying Lord please just get us through this.

I said follow me and now I am not at all convinced

that we are going to make it as because of said

rain that happened mere hours before as we're

going in our Jeep every once in a while it would

slip and go this way or slip and go this way

and I felt every movement of that in every part

of my body. Three hours later. If we would have

just gone the regular way, we would have been

home in 40 minutes. Three hour and, cherry on

top, no cell reception. So guess when you don't

have cell reception, what doesn't work on your

phone? Jay, what doesn't work on your phone if

you don't have cell reception? Maps. Yeah, he

didn't need your help, Claire. He understood.

He's in seventh grade, right? Maps, right? GPS,

nothing. When you look on there, it's just your

car, black. Okay, so we finally make it out every

tension in my body Finally melts Carrie's still

not talking to me, right? Good night, babe. I

love you. I think her words were sure and we

went to sleep All right, so that understanding

of follow right I knew I was gonna need to earn

back some of that trust or just not make any

more decisions that trip and let her take control

but What is faith when it comes to following

Jesus? That he knows where he's going. Lord,

if it is you, command me to come to you on the

water. Now, I love the grace. Maybe you haven't

thought about it this way, but this hit me this

week. The grace of Jesus in this moment. Because

if I'm Jesus, I've been walking with them. Now,

granted, Matthew's not really written out chronologically,

but we're already in chapter 14. We have seen

a bunch of stuff right now. A bunch of reasons

why these guys should trust Jesus hook, line,

and sinker, right? No pun intended. But understand

that if I'm Jesus, I would have been very upset.

Peter, if it is you, if to me, Jesus, boat would

have sank, right? It would have been Titanic

in a very early age, right? That boat would have

sank. I don't know who would have made it. Good

thing I'm not. What does Jesus say? Come. He

doesn't call Peter out yet, but he says, come.

And Peter steps out. Church, this is important.

Peter does not step out randomly. Because a lot

of us would think that Peter's just like, OK,

here we go, splash. He steps out because Jesus

called him. Because that's where faith comes

in. Faith is not reckless. Faith is not impulsive.

Faith is responsive. We have faith because of

what Jesus done has done in our life That is

how the Holy Spirit regenerates us that we in

what however way we can understand it Jesus is

sacrificed on the cross for us he rose again

that we may have new life and This is what gems

model so beautifully because in gems girls are

being taught to listen for the voice of Jesus

Especially in a world where there are millions

of voices the minute you go on that app right

or the minute you step foot in school or whatever

In GEMS they're learning that faith is not just

about proving something, it's about trusting

someone. So let me ask, where is Jesus saying

come in your life? And are you willing to step

out? Because the invitation that Jesus gave Peter

is the same invitation he's gonna give all of

us today and tomorrow and every day that ends

in Y. And through GEMS we are seeing that even

the youngest among us can hear the call and respond.

with courage. Because that's faith. Even when

things don't go well. Even when our faith falls.

Jesus' faith never does. For generations upon

generations, he is faithful. But when faith falters,

something happens. Matthew 14 verse 30 and 31.

Matthew 14:30

But when he saw the wind, he being Peter here,

saw the wind, he was afraid and began to sink.

He cried out, Lord save me. Jesus immediately

reached out, took his hand, took his hand and

took hold of him saying to him, oh you of little

faith, why did you doubt? Put yourself in Peter's

shoes. Lord, if it's you, let me come out onto

the water to you. Jesus says come. You start

walking on the water. You start doing the impossible.

You start doing things that you never thought

you'd be asked or called to do. Because when

Jesus calls you what? We need to trust that he

will sustain you. Jesus will never call you and

say, oh, by the way, you're on your own. No,

I am with you forever to the very end of the

age. But what did Peter see? He saw the wind,

the waves, the chaos of the moment, and things

shifted. His focus moves from Jesus to the storm.

He begins to sink. And this is where the story

becomes painfully familiar for me and my guess

is for all of us. When we start with faith we

step out with confidence. We trust God with boldness

Call it a camp. I a service high ministry high

whatever it is. We think we can take on the world

for Jesus But then life happens Reality sets

in sinful depraved Reality sets in the winds

pick up the people start talking, right? The

people at your job maybe start making fun of

you kids, it just doesn't happen in school when

you step out in your faith, also as you adult.

The waves rise, the pressure builds, and suddenly

what do we do? We take our eyes off the cross,

we take our eyes off of Jesus into the world

around us, and we start thinking something very,

very hard in our life of faith. Can Jesus actually

do this? Is God really real? What happens? We

begin to sink and like Peter we cry out, Lord

save me. Three words, no filter, no performance,

just absolute and utter dependence on Jesus.

I love how Matthew writes, immediately Jesus

reached out his hand. Not after a lecture, not

after disappointment, right? Not having, you

know, getting beat with the grace stick for the

millionth time in my life. but immediately. And

this is what we want every girl in GEMS to know,

and this is what we want every one of you to

know. That when we struggle in life, when we

doubt, when we feel overwhelmed, Jesus isn't

distant. We all need to learn, from GEMS to adulthood,

that Jesus is near and His grace is immediate.

And again, we don't believe in a grace that we

get more of when we do stuff. Nope. We don't

earn grace. And this is what we need to remember

as well. Because even as adults, we are not beyond

these sinking moments. I look out, and I know

some of you are sinking right now. You are in

seasons of life, maybe seasons of ministry, whatever

it looks like, and you feel like you are sinking.

But the good news today and every day is that

even when your faith wavers, our Savior's does

not. As the Canon of Dort, another one of our

confessions remind us that God preserves His

people. Your salvation is not held together by

you. Your faith and salvation is not held together

by me. It's held together by Him. So faith is

not a perfection. Faith is this. When you begin

to sink, you look back to Jesus. So many times

we get overwhelmed but what we believe is making

us sink or the weight that's pushing us down

or that Relationship that seems broken or that

relationship that needs to be well defined or

that kid at school that keeps making fun of us

Or whatever it is. We start looking and give

credence to those things Jesus says look at me.

I am all that you need but We need to believe

that and that can be very hard And in GEMS, that

kind of faith is being nurtured every other Wednesday

through the school year. And I'm sure throughout

the summer when those relationships continue

to evolve, it can't just be in our GEMS program.

It has to be in our council room. It has to be

in our Bible studies, our support ministries.

Every brick that may get built up over the next

year, it has to be in there as well. Because

the ultimate question is, do you trust? Jemzes,

girls everywhere meeting the Savior. Fantastic.

Love it. But when we meet Him, do we trust Him?

And clarity comes after we trust. Matthew 14.

And when they got into the boat, the winds ceased,

and those in the boat worshiped Him saying, truly

you are the Son of God. Some of us, we can find

so much comfort in these verses, right? Oh, man,

then he steps into the boat everything calm the

wind ceases all of the things He is the son of

God. He made it through. He made he made made

us made it through with us again, right? There

is a calm after the storm. Praise be to God We

could sit there and the sermon can be done and

that's fantastic. Guess what? It's not Because

how many times do we have to be in this place?

Now it gets raw right now. It gets personal Because

that is quite the statement truly. You are the

son of God Where did we just hear that two weeks

ago? For lunch and a conversation with Pastor

Jim we heard this come from an unlikely place.

I just made a lot easier So it's gonna be a value

meal Where did we hear this? What the soldier

at the cross? You hear a version of this with

the guy hanging on the cross. People that were

one minute dead to themselves, the next minute

making a profession of faith. Why is that hard?

Why is Jim getting mad? What's coming? This sermon

now seems like it's taking a turn and it should

because we've been in church most of our lives

for a lot of us. Yet this is still a place that

we come to week in and week out. When will we

get it? When can we just walk it? When can we

speak it? When do we why do we need all this

grace? Here's even better news Because Jesus

knows we're gonna need it. He knows you're going

to need it time and time again That's why it's

not a pitcher of water grace that will one day

run out. Grace upon grace, mercy new every morning.

But in this account, they confess. Probably for

the third or fourth time already. They see more

clearly. And here's the pattern. Clarity comes

after we trust. You have to trust. Right? Even

when I do premarital with couples, and there's

a question, one of the questions in the assessments,

is there anything that can be done in life, that

will make me waver in my commitment to my spouse.

You want to set up a couple that's going through

pre -marital, getting ready, maybe in their 20s?

You want to ask that question to a couple that's

been married five years? You want to ask that

question to a couple married 10 years, 15 years,

20 years, 30 years, 40 years? If you're the Zichterman,

somewhere in the 60s or 70 years, fantastic.

You want to get that conversation uncomfortable?

Ask that question. Because that is tried and

weathered and tested commitment over and over

and over again. And that's between two sinners.

Yet we have that tested and tried and weathered

relationship with the Son of God. Because we

want answers first. We want guarantees first.

We want to control our level of the relationship

first. God, if I do this, you better do that.

That's not how it works with the sovereign God.

In this relationship, the follower never trumps

the leader. That's blasphemy, right? When we

think we know more than God, we're saying we

are God. Spoiler alert, we never will be. We

never should be. The conviction we should never

want to be. And this is something that Gems is

helping cultivate the life in our church. Because

what we see in this ministry is that the reminder

that we don't have to have everything figured

out. Trust and obey. There is no other way. And

our lives are like, trust and obey when we get

our way. That's not how it works. That's a terrible

hymn. This is a wonderful hymn. To be happy in

Jesus. To trust and obey. So let's step out together.

What does this look like for us today? Well,

let me start with the girls and gems. This is

me to you. This is kind of fun. Whenever I say

a word, they're all writing it down. We may adopt

this for just every Sunday because I think it's

really cool. So gems, what does this mean? Trust

God at school. Right? Whatever school system

you're in, trusting God has you even in the midst

of your classes and tests and all of those things.

Standing up for what is right. Standing up for

the little one, the one that might be getting

made fun of, that we stand up for that. That's

justice in the world of gems. That we can pray

with boldness. All of you, can you say, Father,

help? One, two, three. Greatest prayer you could

ever pray. Pray it with boldness. And if you

need help, ask your leaders. Ask me, ask your

parents. Go to God's Word. He will teach you

how to pray. And for gems, it's okay to live

differently. It's okay to understand that you

want to be everywhere meeting the Savior. Live

that out as best you can, knowing you're never

going to do it perfectly, but God's grace is

always there. And for the rest of us, we all

could be probably like that, but for you this

morning, what does it mean to take steps in obedience

today? Letting go of control and all of you type

A's hate that I said that but it's so true There's

grace even for the type A's and he spoiler alert.

It's probably not gonna come the way you wish

it was directed in your life Stop being type

A over Jesus Trusting God and uncertainty and

loving people Sacrificially and for us as a church.

We are not called to stay comfortable. We're

called to step out What I love is that through

gems we are not we are this is not just something

that we're preaching just for today But it's

something we're seeing in every aspect of the

church We need to step out in faith if your mind

goes to one or two or three things in that good

Live in that space step out in faith We are seeing

young lives shaped we're seeing faith take root.

We're seeing courage grow God is reminding all

of us, not just through gems, what it looks like

to trust Him in everything. Because ultimately,

what we get from this passage, what I want you

to take with you today, is Jesus didn't just

walk on water, but He walked to the cross carrying

it on His shoulders. He stepped into our brokenness.

He took our sin. He made a way for us to be held

forever and ever. So, in our life, when we cry,

Lord, save me. Guess what? He already has. The

Heideberg Catechism reminds us that we are not

our own, but we belong to our faithful Savior,

Jesus Christ. And that is the same Savior that

the girls in gems are coming to know. That is

the same Savior that the girls in our gems are

getting point to every other Wednesday. And so

here's the invitation this morning. Not just

for our gems, but for all of us. The question

is not, can you walk on water? I tricked you

in the beginning of the sermon. Who are will

you trust the one who holds the water? When you

hear him saying to you come What step is in front

of you? It may feel small or you may feel small

or afraid or unsure But the same God who was

faithful in Deuteronomy the same Jesus who stood

on the water is still faithful in your life in

2026 We are being reminded that this truth of

this truth in a fresh and powerful way My last

point for you today. You don't. You don't. You

don't step out just because you are strong. You

step out because he is faithful and the one who

calls you is already standing on the water. That's

what I think Peter missed. They were astonished.

They thought he was a ghost. They all their mind.

He's already standing on the water. So why did

Peter need to be afraid? Jesus wasn't sinking,

yet he started to. That sometimes this road of

faith will be hard and doubt will set in. But
