Walking on Eggshells

Good morning. There's been a lot of new people over the course of this
-
summer. I'm Shamus, one of the one of the pastors here. It
-
is my joy to be able to share the Word with you this morning.
-
I hope you brought a copy of God's Word with you. If you did
-
not, our ushers who've already serviced this morning and Lord Supper are gonna be
-
walking around. If you need a Bible, or if you need a bulletin
-
to be able to take notes, if you'd like to fill in blanks,
-
we get Bible bulletin pins. Those things are coming around. Just kind of
-
wave at one of them and they'll hand you that in just a moment.
-
And of course we have a few weeks ago just gotten to start the Gospel.
-
I've gotten to start Romans, right, So we've started Romans just a
-
few weeks ago. So naturally I'm going to ask you, as you have
-
your Bible, or as you open your Bible, go ahead and turn into
-
the Gospel of Matthew. That makes sense, right, It's the next thing
-
this week, by God's grace, we're gonna be going through, working through
-
the same passage of scripture that they're teaching at this moment and Crossway kids,
-
and that we're gonna be working through this afternoon and Crossway students. So it's
-
gonna be sort of a same page Sunday. We'll be in Matthew chapter twenty
-
five. Turn in your bibles to Matthew chapter twenty five before we get there
-
in just a moment. It's gonna work coming in in the middle of a
-
conversation. Definitely, the second word in Matthew in this section is going to
-
be for it. Right. So before we get to this section in Matthew
-
twenty five, I want to explain a little bit. This is towards the
-
end of Jesus, jesus life, his journey here walking with his disciples.
-
He's teaching on the Mount of Olives. His disciples have just asked him,
-
just a few chapters back in chapter twenty twenty four, verse three, tell
-
us what will be the sign of your coming and the sign of the end
-
of the age. And so he goes on to answer their questions. He's
-
answering what they should be looking for as the sign of his coming when the
-
Son of Man comes and the sign of the end of the age talks a
-
lot about judgment. He talks a lot about what they should prepare for,
-
and that they should be, in fact watchful and waiting for his return,
-
because judgment is coming with the advent to the Kingdom of Heaven. And so
-
the parables and then the preview in chapter twenty five bur an answer to this
-
question, what will the coming of the Kingdom of Heaven be like? What
-
will the coming of the Kingdom of Heaven be like? And what will the
-
coming of the Son of Man look like? Let's listen intently with that in
-
mind, Matthew contexts this morning is Matthew twenty five, verse fourteen through thirty.
-
God's word says, for it will be like a man going on a
-
journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. To one,
-
he gave five talents to another, two to another, one to each
-
according to his ability. Then he went away. He who had received the
-
five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents
-
more. So also he who had the two talents made two talents more.
-
But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and
-
hid his master's money. Now, after a long time, the master of
-
those servants came and settled accounts with them, And he who had received the
-
five talents came forward bringing five talents more, saying, Master, you delivered
-
to me five talents. Here I have made five talents more. His master
-
said to him, well done, good and faithful servant, you have been
-
faithful over a little. I will set you over much. Enter into the
-
joy of your master. And he also, who had the two talents,
-
came forward, saying, Master, you delivered to me two talents. Here
-
I have made two talents more. His master said to him, well done,
-
good and faithful servant, you have been faithful over a little. I
-
will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master. He
-
also, who had received the one talent, came forward, saying, Master,
-
I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not
-
sew, and gathering where you scattered no seed. So I was afraid,
-
and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what
-
is yours. But his master answered him, you, wicked and swathful servant.
-
You knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where
-
I have scattered no seed. Then you ought to have invested my money with
-
the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own
-
with interest. So take the talent from him and give it to him who
-
has the ten talents. For to everyone who has will be given more,
-
and he will have an abundance. But the one who has not even what
-
he has, will be taken away and cast the worthless servant into the outer
-
darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. This
-
is God's word. I'm not sure what would come to your mind when I
-
use the phrase walking on eggshells, but for some of you, you've got
-
a very visceral memory of what that would feel like. There's a real you've
-
got to maybe a face that comes to your mind. You maybe got a
-
situation that comes to your mind. It's a it's maybe a person that you're
-
close to, maybe even a person that you're related to, A kind of
-
person that that most of the time you're hoping, for whatever reason, that
-
they're in a good mood. Maybe you're hoping they've woken up on the right
-
side of the bed, so to speak, that you've maybe caught them on
-
a good day. Maybe it's a boss, maybe it's a spouse, maybe
-
it's a it's a parent or was a parent, maybe it's a teenager.
-
You figured out maybe some ways around to sort of navigate what it's like when
-
they're in that place, to avoid maybe them blowing up, you know what
-
it is to walk on eggshells. And those experiences impact us in a very
-
deep way. We can't help but those experiences having an impact on us in
-
the way that we relate to everything around us, and even I would say
-
even in the way that we consider that we relate to God, not because
-
He's acted that way towards us, but because we have categories that we feel
-
from people that we know, and so we sort of extrapolate and map that
-
onto our understanding of who God is. No no person should ever use their
-
influence or proximity or strength or power over another person to scare them into compliance
-
with their anger or shortness. That should never be the case, but for
-
some reason, we tend to project that even on the perfect, holy,
-
loving, merciful, gracious God. And depending on how we've been raised,
-
depending on how we've been impacted by these angry people, it's easy for us
-
just to sort of accept those expectations that's just the way they are, that's
-
the way they have been. It's easy for us to sort of again set
-
our patterns of living, to walk around in such a way that we just
-
try really hard not to tick them off. And that seeps into what we
-
believe about our heavenly Father. I like the third servant here, We'll see
-
in just a moment, we can see God's absolute sovereignty. We can recognize
-
the fact that he is ultimately the master over everything because he owns it all,
-
everything belongs to him, everything already belonged to him. And so we
-
can automatically sort of make that switch and think, well, he's infinitely powerful,
-
he's infinitely sovereign, and we can assume that he commands our obedience simply
-
by the threat of consequences. And yet that's not who we see, that's
-
not we says he actually is. We are prone to misunderstand God's heart.
-
Behind providing us with everything that we have and then commanding us to be faithful
-
stewards, He's actually inviting us. You see it in this text. He's
-
actually inviting us into his joy. That's what he's doing. He's calling us
-
in, He's drawing us and he's saying, answer, look at what I
-
have for you. It's not a relationship where you're just barely hoping you get
-
it right or you're gonna cause him to explode. The more we encounter the
-
God of the Bible, the more we realize that this God draws us in
-
not with threats of destruction and annihilation, but with his kindness, his mercy,
-
and his peace and his promise that those who are faithful to his word
-
will have a share in his joy for those who are hidden in Christ.
-
There should be no more walking on eggshells with this God. If you're looking,
-
what's the what's the one main idea we want to get through today?
-
And this passage and from draw from this it's in your notes. But Jesus
-
will come to settle accounts with us. He will settle accounts with us,
-
and so let us, in that light leverage our little for the Master's joy.
-
Leverage our little for the Master's joy. For you're taking notes, and
-
I encourage you to just to kind of follow along as we can go.
-
The first section there I recognize and teaching a parable like this is it's kind
-
of like in kind of breaking the pieces apart it's a little like explaining a
-
joke. If you have to explain it, you're gonna have a hard time
-
catching the point. So I hope as we were reading it, this was
-
something that you you have a category from in a category in your mind for
-
what this story would have felt like to hear. And we're going to also
-
walk through some of the characters in particular. First we'll look at the character
-
of the Master. We should first faithfully leverage our little because it and that
-
is everything, It all belongs to our master. It all belongs to our
-
master. Like the master, God wisely entrusts his stuff, his material,
-
his goods, his things to each person according to their capacity for his own
-
purposes. This master was, he was, you see, going on a
-
long journey. He was going on a journey that ended out ended up in
-
verse nineteen to be a long one, but we didn't tell them that at
-
the beginning, and in his absence, he naturally wanted his capital, he
-
wanted his goods to be put to work as a good master would. He
-
knew his servants really well, and he understood their abilities, and he understood
-
their capacities, and so he gave to each of them and trusted to each
-
of them his property to be stewarded, not as something that was going to
-
be their own, but it's something that they were going to steward on his
-
behalf and his absence. Although it was an astronomical amount of money, an
-
astronomical amount of wealth that was actually entrusted to them. The Master was so
-
rich that he later refers to this five talents and two talents as little a
-
talent would have been about six thousand days worth of just an ordinary day laborers
-
wages. So one talent is like twenty years worth of money. And so
-
one guy got five of those, right, He understood that this guy was
-
of an ability that he could take that and he could do something with it.
-
And like the Master, but even more so, God owns everything,
-
not just the money, not just the stuff, not just the Catalan a
-
thousand hills, although that as well the earth and all of its fullness,
-
everything belongs to the Lord. And by our service we're not actually giving him
-
anything that he doesn't already own or rightfully deserve, even when he calls us
-
to worship him. And so, also, just like the Master, but
-
even more so, God perfectly knows each one of us, all the way
-
down to the last minute detail of who and what we are. And he's
-
entrusted to each one of us, believer and nonbeliever alike, his stuff for
-
our good and his glory, to increase our joy joy in him. But
-
the real and most important question, and that's what is revealed in the course
-
of this story, the real and most important question when it comes to this
-
master servant relationship, and it's the same for you and me as it was
-
for these servants, is this, Yes, Yahweh is the Lord of all.
-
Yes, he's definitely your master, and he's certainly God. But who
-
is he to you? How do you relate to him? And often the
-
answer to that question has everything to do with how we think He has handled
-
us, how we feel about how He has handled us. For some reason,
-
this entire I was tuesday years old when it first occurred to me in
-
the conversation that we had at launch, that the things that God gives us,
-
the talents that he entrusts to us, are not just the positive things.
-
Right we think of God giving us the talents or giving us that we
-
think. We think of natural talents, we think of maybe wealth, we
-
think of influence, we think of power, We think of maybe our our
-
personal capacities, influence and everything that we think of, mental capacity, youth,
-
energy, strength, whatever youth we have. We think of all the
-
things on the positive side of what we've got to work with in this life.
-
And yet for some reason I missed the fact that this was the same
-
Jesus of Nazareth who's going to finish his teaching on the amount of olives here,
-
and he's going to go out, and he's going to predict to his
-
disciples. You know that after two days the passover is coming, and then
-
the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified. And did he
-
not also say back in Matthew chapter sixteen, if anyone would come after me,
-
let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For
-
whoever would save his life will lose it. For whoever loses his life for
-
my sake will find it. And for what will it profit a man if
-
he gains the whole world and forfeits his self, Or what shall a man
-
give in return for his soul? For the Son of Man is going to
-
come with his angels and the glory of his father, and then he will
-
repay each person according to what he has done. Prince, we follow our
-
king who carried his cross with a cross of our own. If you're here
-
today and you can functionally believe, and you have functionally believed, God's never
-
going to give you more than you can handle. Right at some level,
-
in one sense, that's true, right, and carrying your cross behind pierced
-
feet will entail more than you just having to bear the cross of your winning
-
personality and dashing good looks, because your cross, like mine, is going
-
to have splinters and shards in it. Your talents might include things like waking
-
up in the middle of the night and having to go to the er to
-
get your appendix removed. And then now, what will you do with that?
-
Right, especially in this your Master knows what he's doing. It doesn't
-
always feel that way. It feels like you're getting something that you don't deserve.
-
How did this happen? What must I have done to have received this
-
thing? This was not the plan. But there are things in this life
-
that can only be learned through suffering, and friends, we dare not waste
-
our suffering. Even here we can and we must learn to trust the hand
-
of the Master who apportions to each according to his or her ability as one
-
who is united to Christ. God's never going to give you more than you
-
can handle. United with Christ, you will never receive more than you can
-
handle. Hidden with Christ in God, he apportions these inflictions for the good
-
of those who love them, who are called according to His purpose. We're
-
not supposed to just as Christians learn to rejoice in suffering because suffering is in
-
itself somehow a good thing. It's not, and it's not going to be
-
a part of the age to come. You think there's gonna be an er
-
in heaven, we sing a song with the little kids. There'll be no
-
band aids in heaven, right, No emergency medical care, no stings from
-
bees, no scrapes of neese. There'll be no band aids up there.
-
Why because all of that stuff is going to be done away with. We're
-
not supposed to just like it because it's fun. Jesus came to bear it
-
so that he could do away with it. We're not called to be religio
-
masochists. We rejoice in suffering because we believe that even in these things,
-
our good heavenly Father could have sent to us of all those things. This
-
is what He's entrusted to us for our good and for his glory, and
-
we can trust him in it, and the only entrust stuff to us for
-
our good. Belove it again. Please don't waste your trials because of who
-
your Master is. You can trust him. They are talents in disguise.
-
And even if you have gifts positive things, there's things that you want to
-
try to leverage for the master's gain. You want to I want to do
-
something with this. I want to make much of God because of what He's
-
invested in me. Don't think at any moment in time that you're ever actually
-
giving something to God that he doesn't already deserve, that He hasn't already given
-
to you in the first place. Paul talks about this, we have no
-
gifts that we've not received and C. S. Lewis, if you've read
-
the Book of Mere Christianity, he explains this in one of his books,
-
to explain that you know, actually everything belongs to him. He says,
-
every faculty you have, your power of thinking, you're moving of your limbs
-
from moment to moment, is given to you by God. If you devoted
-
every moment of your life exclusively to his service. You could never give him
-
anything that was not in some sense is already. It's the same thing that
-
Jesus says in Luke seventeen ten. At the end, even if we do
-
it all right, so that when we have done all that we were commended,
-
the best we're going to be able to say, he says, is
-
we were unworthy servants. We have only done that which was our duty,
-
because everything belongs to him. So naturally whatever we've received from him, we
-
have received from him. And so whatever the reason, it's a battle in
-
this life for us to come to the realization that what we've been entrusted with
-
is not actually ours, it doesn't actually belong to us. And so for
-
that reason, it's true that we never actually add anything to God's investment.
-
Not really. Lewis continued in that same section, he said illustrated by saying,
-
it's like this. It's like a small child going to a father and
-
saying, Daddy, give me a sixpence to bry you a birthday present.
-
And of course he says, the father does. Of course he does,
-
right, and he's pleased with the child's present. It's all very nice and
-
proper, But only an idiot would think that the father is sixpence to the
-
good on the transaction. Right, do you have it added anything to the
-
father? You've done this right, I mean the parents and other people like
-
at some point you had to give a yeah, yeah, sure, it's
-
Father's Day, or it's a it's a whatever, it's a birthday. Go,
-
I'll give you some money. You can give me your birthday present.
-
You've experienced this thing, right at some level in your life, some resources
-
to purchase a gift that's inevitably for you. It feels a little weird,
-
the in fact, the Bible that I'm preaching from is just such a gift.
-
It was. It was something that I was finishing, my doctor Thompson,
-
my family I asked, I actually asked for this as a gift,
-
and so yes, of course they went and got it. And and inside
-
the front cover here it has all of their names, right, and so
-
it's it's special and precious to me. And and yet I'm pretty sure it
-
came out of my checking account to cover that. Right. No, I
-
wasn't a richer, right, It wasn't like, oh I got a new
-
Bible, thank you so much. I mean, yes he was, it
-
was, it was wonderful. Yes I wasn't richer, But I don't think
-
that's what my wife and my children were after in that instance any more than
-
the kid who went out and bought his father at birthday present. They weren't
-
aiming at the father's gain. They were aiming at the father's pleasure. That's
-
a joy for me to preach from this for that reason, because it's special
-
to me, not because that somehow was a gain, but because it meant
-
something that they wanted to do that for me. No, not richer,
-
It all belongs to him. We're gonna add nothing to his riches, but
-
we should seek, as his children to increase his joy of love for the
-
father. The gain the Master is after isn't monetary. He owns everything.
-
He was never after the blood of bulls and goats. They already belonged to
-
him. What did he want. He didn't want the gift. He wanted
-
the pleasure he take in his faithful children, because not after the gift.
-
It's got no interest in that, merely preserving his capital, that's all his
-
already. He takes pleasure in those who fear him and those who hope in
-
his steadfast love, friends, is your heart his? Why do you obey
-
out of a fear that somehow he's gonna zap you if you don't. May
-
it never be merely external actions, not merely obligation, not merely a wrong
-
kind of fear. Do you believe that he delights in your faithful obedience.
-
Let's leverage our little because it belongs to him, but not merely because it
-
belongs to him, but because we love him. Secondly, let's leverage our
-
little because it's entrusted to us for gain. Like the good and faithful servants
-
here Jesus's disciples, who understand their roles as servants faithfully aim at kingdom gain,
-
and we'll see their master's benediction and joy on that day. Again,
-
here what we see is the faithful servant goes out and he makes five talents.
-
More the second faithful servant he has two, and he goes out and
-
does Likewise, they were aiming at. They had an eye towards a gain
-
for the master. Multiplication, fruitfulness, more of the Kingdom's advance, and
-
the hearts of men and women in the wider world be kind of the parallel
-
for us. The sums here again are staggering, and yet what the Master
-
calls it is little. What would the Master have expected of them? Well,
-
the story doesn't explicitly say, but it seems like the first two guys
-
got it right. It seems like the first two guys wanted, out of
-
an overflow of love for and concern for and care for the Master, that
-
they wanted to do what the Master had called them to do. There was
-
an expectation of return. So it's no wonder when the Master returns that the
-
guy who made five, he was the first one in line. Like when
-
I come home, the kids who I see are not the ones I'm worried
-
about. That's the ones who are hiding. The five talent guy was right
-
there, The two talent guy was right behind him, and then the one
-
talent guy, well he we'll talk about him in a minute. But notice
-
what he does not just praise, is hey, look at that game.
-
Look at what he says to them. Look at what he says to each
-
of them. It's the same. It's the same thing. Well done,
-
good and faithful servants. Is this say look at all this that you made.
-
Well done, good and faithful servants. He was after their faithfulness.
-
He was he wanted their their faithfulness. Many years ago, there were two
-
young men, Leonard and David, who had heard the story of a man
-
who had escaped from a slave island in at the time, it's now known
-
as Saint Thomas. There were three thousand slaves on that island in the year
-
seventeen thirty one, and the only people who were allowed on that island because
-
of the owner of all of those slaves, were people who were slaves.
-
He basically said he was an atheist and he was not going to allow anyone
-
to go there and to preach the gospel. There's going to be no gospel
-
work. There was going to be no churches there. There was going to
-
be nothing like that. And Leonard heard about this happening. He was it
-
was just a potter, meaning he just made pots, that's what he did
-
for a living. And he just he heard this three thousand people who were
-
going to live and die without ever being able to hear the gospel, and
-
he could not sleep that night at all. He went up the next day
-
and went and talked to his mission sending organization, and he asked, like,
-
we've got to do something. I have to do something. But what
-
could he do? He wasn't trained for this, He wasn't in any way
-
specialized in order to be able to go and do this thing. So that
-
organization said, tell you what, wait a year, we'll see how it
-
goes. He prayed, he continued faithfully. The year comes, the year
-
goes, he says, I still want to go. So he lear and
-
David boarded this ship as a European Dutchman. He said, if they don't
-
let you in, what are you gonna do? He said, well,
-
I will just sell myself into slavery if that's what it takes for me to
-
be able to share the gospel with these people. And of course everybody who's
-
hearing this story, everybody who's talking to him, said, this is absurd.
-
This is not what you're prepared for, This is not what you've trained
-
for. Why would you do this? And a whole bunch of people show
-
up at the dock as he's pulling away. They're not there to just encourage
-
him. They're there to pray, but they're hoping that somehow they're going to
-
be able to persuade him to get off the boats. He was able to
-
get a job on that particular ship to head in that particular direction. And
-
as people are waving and they're crying, and they're thinking, this is a
-
terrible idea. Why in the world would you do this, He is believed
-
to have said, We don't know which one of them said it, but
-
called back to the shore. May the Lamb of God receive the prize,
-
the reward of his suffering. That was what motivated him, that the Lamb
-
of God will receive the reward of his suffering. That man was eighteen years
-
old. As he boarded that ship to go to that place, there was
-
no Christian on that island. A year and a half later, there were
-
four Christians on that island. Six years after that, there were eight hundred
-
Christians on that island. Because he was willing to suffer for the sake of
-
the name of Christ, that Christ would receive the reward of his suffering.
-
God himself will see to the gain. Be it through an eighteen year old
-
potter to go and do missionary work in a field that has never been sown.
-
God will see to the gain. You Christians, seek to be faithful.
-
You put one foot in front of another. Seek to be faithful.
-
Your parents and grandparents. You may be a parent and a grandparent who's praying
-
and weeping continually regularly asking for prayer for your children and your grandchildren who have
-
turned away from the Lord. Continue to pray, and do not give up
-
for the prayer of a righteous person as powerful and as great power as it
-
is working. That persistence and that prayer is hurt in heaven and will accomplish
-
what God sends it through you, for He is deepening your capacity to one
-
day enjoy more of His joy with it to you who are here and are
-
hoping to one day, Mary, but it doesn't seem like it's just around
-
the corner. Don't let one moment of your capacity go to waste capacity.
-
What Paul says is it's an opportunity for undivided devotion to the Lord. It's
-
never going to be greater than it is right now. And whether you're receiving
-
this part of your journey with open arms or as more of one of those
-
like middle of the night er visits, don't bury this talent while you're waiting
-
for his spouse. Faithfully serve the Lord with the capacity that he has entrusted
-
you with today. If you're finding yourself here, and you're still battling sin,
-
and it seems like it's the same kind of sin over and over again.
-
Don't at that disillusion you. You're gonna be fighting sin until you breathe
-
your first breath in glory. Don't just throw your hands up because it's too
-
hard. God is faithful and he's not going to let you be tempted beyond
-
what you're able. He knows your ability, and with the temptation he allows,
-
he says he's going to provide a way out so that you'd be able
-
to stand up under that temptation. Don't give up. Your master knows your
-
capacity. Take the next step and multiply his joy and your joy in his
-
joy. And he realizes an important point as well. If you've read these
-
good and faithful servants, somehow being the ones that are saved by their faithful
-
plotting, you've missed the point. Let's get to the twist in the story.
-
Lastly. Thirdly, let's leverage our little because it will reveal our true
-
fear like this wicked, slothful servant, those who are paralyzed by a wrong
-
fear of God so as to ignorantly and lazily go about their daily life.
-
They're going to receive the wages of sin, separation from him forever. And
-
now, if peoplek at verse eighteen, look at verse eighteen. The one
-
who would receive the one talent went out and dug in the ground and hit
-
his master's money. He was as eager to avoid the responsibility as the other
-
two were to be faithful with the responsibility. All three servants were being tested.
-
It seems like the first two understood that, but all three of them
-
are being tested, just like we are, all of life here on this
-
earth in some way, as a weight is a testing ground intended by God
-
to purify and to strengthen our faith and fit us for eternal life. All
-
of those things are tests for us, and they're going to reveal what we
-
really worship. They're going to reveal where our fears really placed. The servant
-
was quick to go and to bury that twenty years salary worth of silver in
-
the ground. And it's funny, because it's not funny, it's ironic because
-
the Master says later, you could have at least given it to the ans
-
and gotten interest from it. And I'm wondering in my head, like wouldn't
-
that have taken less energy than running out and digging a hole to bury it
-
in the first place. Have you ever, parents, who know exactly what
-
I'm talking about, You spent more energy being disobedient than you would have been
-
doing and just doing being the obedient thing? Right, ever, walked around
-
the same hamper of clothes for two weeks would have been anyway. The Master
-
was owed more than that. Right, this one talent servant had a one
-
talent capacity, but he couldn't even be bothered to give a one talent effort.
-
He took no ownership of the stewardship that had been entrusted to him.
-
Do we because fear was twisted, he had a deficient view of the Master.
-
He defined him Verse twenty four weeks His Master, I knew you to
-
be a hard man. And here we come back around to what do you
-
think of the Master? Do you see him as one who is a hard
-
man of whom you're supposed to be afraid? Aren't we supposed to fear God?
-
Yes? Yes, But in Scripture there are a couple of kinds of
-
fear when it comes to God. There's the kind that runs away from him
-
and the kind that runs to him because of how beautiful and wonderful and amazing
-
we believe that He is. For one who is a believer, one who
-
has trusted Christ's sacrificial death on their behalf to count for them. The wrath
-
of God has been satisfied, fully drank by the by Jesus Christ on the
-
cross. He is fully paid for our sin appeared to Stephen Charnock put it
-
this way. He said, nothing of God looks terrible in Christ to a
-
believer. The sun has risen, the shadows are vanished. God walks upon
-
the battlements of love. Justice hath left its sting in the Savior's side.
-
The law is disarmed, the weapons are out of his hands. Nothing in
-
God looks terrible in Christ to a believer. Praise the Lord. That's the
-
kind of fear that takes in the little bit of God that a human being
-
can really understand, and is terrified that we would not get more of him,
-
The kind of dread that would characterize the wicked slawful servant only comprehends one
-
facet of God, and that imperfectly but beloved. Can you honestly say,
-
honestly, if you're here today and you are not bought in? Yet,
-
can you honestly say, knowing that God so loved the world that he gave
-
his only son to be wounded and crushed for our iniquities, beaten and afflicted
-
for our sentence, even forsaken by his heavenly father, while they drank the
-
cup of God's wrath against sin, so that whoever would believe in him could
-
live forever in his joy? Can you honestly say that he deserves to be
-
thought of as hard? Is that even intellectually honest? And here we have
-
the shocking part of this At the end, the last servant gets tossed into
-
the outer darkness, whether it's weeping and nashing of teeth. My hope is
-
that you would you would see today where your hope is, rather than find
-
it on that day. Because there was one seated among them. There was
-
one seated among them named Judas, whose fear was revealed to be something other
-
than Christ. Easy is always going to be easier next episode. Just keep
-
scrolling, turn up the music, check your notification, scan the scores,
-
make sure you have a mystity news on and on and on. Become very
-
easy for us to amuse ourselves to death. I hope for you is that
-
you'd be more more fully assured as one hidden in Christ. Nothing of God
-
looks terrible to you. Any inclination that you have to work and a live
-
for Christ is out of love and an ever deepening appreciation for who He is
-
and what He's done, that you would realize that you're free to be faithful.
-
God take care of the game. And for those of you who are
-
still tempted to believe that God is hard, maybe because your lot in life
-
has been harder than you think, worse than you deserve. Maybe because you're
-
still not quite wrapped your head around the reality that He never demands anything that
-
he doesn't fully deserve. Maybe because you're still holding onto the things of this
-
world because you know that Christ wants your all and you're not ready to give
-
it up yet. The only gods that you're going to have to walk on
-
eggshells around are the fleeting gods of this world. The lust of the flesh,
-
the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. Those are
-
the little g gods that are going to demand and demand and demand and never
-
deliver on the happiness that they promise. This God calls you to share in
-
his joy,
