  1. Let's read from the Book of Isaiah. We're gonna be

  2. in verses eighteen of forty two through verse twenty one

  3. of chapter forty three. It's about about a chapter's worth

  4. of text, although it moves across the conventional chapter break.

  5. Let's start in forty two eighteen. You can read along

  6. as I read aloud. Hear you deaf, look you blind?

  7. That you may see? Who is blind? But my servant

  8. or death is my messenger whom I send? Who is

  9. blind as my dedicated one, or blind as the servant

  10. of the Lord. He sees many things, but does not

  11. observe them. His ears are open, but he does not hear.

  12. The Lord was pleased for his righteousness sake, to magnify

  13. his law and make it glorious. But this is a

  14. people plundered and looted. They are all of them trapped

  15. in holes and hidden in prisons. They've become plunder with

  16. no one to rescue, spoil, with none to say restore.

  17. Who among you will give ear to this, will attend

  18. and listen for the time to come. Who gave up

  19. Jacob to the looter and Israel to the plunderers? Was

  20. it not the Lord against whom we have sinned in

  21. whose ways they would not walk, and whose laws they

  22. would not obey. So he poured on them the heat

  23. of his anger and the might of battle. It set

  24. him on fire all around, but he did not understand.

  25. It burned him up, but he did not take it

  26. to heart. But now, thus says the Lord, he who

  27. created you, oh Jacob, who formed you, Oh Israel, fear not,

  28. for I have redeemed you, called you by name. You

  29. are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will

  30. be with you. Through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you.

  31. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned,

  32. and the flames shall not consume you. For I am

  33. the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.

  34. I gave Egypt as your ransom, Cush and Siba, in

  35. exchange for you, because you are precious in my eyes

  36. and honored, and I love you. I give men in

  37. return for you, peoples, in exchange for your life. Fear not,

  38. for I am with you. I will bring your offspring

  39. from the east, and from the west I will gather,

  40. gather you. I will say to the north, give up

  41. to the south, Do not withhold bring my sons from

  42. Afar and my daughters, from the end of the earth.

  43. Everyone who is called by my name, whom I created

  44. for my glory, whom I formed and made. Bring out

  45. the people who are blind yet have eyes, who are

  46. deaf and yet haveviers. All nations gather together. The peoples assemble,

  47. who among them can declare this and show us the

  48. former things. Let them bring their witnesses to prove them right.

  49. Let them hear and say it's true. You are my witnesses,

  50. declares the Lord and my servant, whom I've chosen, that

  51. you may know and believe me and understand that I

  52. am He. Before me, no God was formed, nor shall

  53. there be any after me. I I am the Lord,

  54. and beside me there is no savior. I declared and

  55. saved and proclaimed when there was no strange God among you,

  56. and you are my witnesses, declares the Lord. And I

  57. am God, and henceforth I am He. There is none

  58. who can deliver from my hand I work and who

  59. can turn it back. Thus says the Lord, Lord, your Redeemer,

  60. the Holy One of Israel. For your sake, I send

  61. to Babylon and bring them all down as fugitives. Even

  62. the Chaldeans in the ships in which they rejoice. I

  63. am the Lord, your holy One, the creator of Israel,

  64. your King. Thus says the Lord, who makes away in

  65. the sea, a path in the mighty waters, who brings

  66. forth chariot and horse, army and warrior. They lie down,

  67. they cannot rise. They are extinguished, quenched like a wick.

  68. Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold,

  69. I'm doing a new thing. Now it springs forth. Do

  70. you not perceive it. I will make a way in

  71. the wilderness, rivers in the desert. The wild beasts will

  72. honor me, the jackals and ostriches. For I give water

  73. in the wilderness, rivers in the desert, to give drink

  74. to my chosen people, the people whom I formed for myself,

  75. that they might declare my praise. This is the word

  76. of the Lord. Do you know how to tell your

  77. story of God's grace? Do you know how to tell

  78. your story of God's grace? It's unique your story because

  79. it's yours. You're like a snowflake. There's nobody exactly like you.

  80. There's no one who exactly has your experiences. And yet,

  81. in another sense, every story of God's grace is the

  82. same because it's about him. It's about his grace, as

  83. it says in verse six of forty three, Here bring

  84. my sons from Afar, and my daughters from the ends

  85. of the earth, everyone who was called by my name.

  86. There is a sense in which this passage in Isaiah

  87. is every son and daughter's story. I wonder, though, if

  88. you recognize it. I wonder if you recognize it Christian

  89. in such a deep way that it actually shapes your

  90. life in response to that story, that it actually shapes

  91. the way you worship, and shapes the way you forgive others,

  92. and shapes the way you extend grace, and shapes the

  93. way you love the God who showed you grace. I

  94. wonder if you recognize it non Christian. I wonder if

  95. you recognize in it this story of what it would

  96. look like to become a son or daughter of God,

  97. because this is every son and daughter story. He said, well,

  98. what about it? What are you saying is every son

  99. and daughter's story? There's a lot of dense Hebrew poetry here.

  100. What are you talking about? Well, let's piece it together,

  101. and we'll piece it together with these three questions. Who

  102. were you? What did God do and why did he

  103. do it? Who were you? What did God do and

  104. why did he do it? That makes up, in some

  105. sense every son and daughter's story. Well, let's start off

  106. with who you were? Who were you? Christian? Let me ask,

  107. do you know who you were before you were made his?

  108. Do you have, I wonder, an accurate assessment before his

  109. redemptive adoption? Well, you could consider these four descriptions blind deaf,

  110. trapped and under judgment, blind deaf tracked an under judgment.

  111. I mean, consider verse twenty He sees many things, but

  112. he does not observe them. His ears are open, but

  113. he does not hear. That's blind and deaf trapped. Consider

  114. verse twenty two. They are all of them trapped in

  115. holes and hidden in prisons under judgment. He poured verse

  116. twenty five on him the heat of his anger. It

  117. burned him up, but he did not take it to heart.

  118. Those are some descriptions blind deaf trapped under judgment. And

  119. you may say, well, hold on past her. I see

  120. those words there, but I'm not so sure I was

  121. so bad. I mean blind. I am one who has

  122. been familiar with God's ways for a long time. I

  123. feel like I've known him all my life. I'm not

  124. so bad. I've just needed a little help from Jesus.

  125. Aren't these descriptions here about those who would be unfamiliar

  126. with God's ways, not like me? Well, I'm glad you asked,

  127. because you know this passage. And Isaiah actually does start

  128. off speaking to those who were unfamiliar with God's ways.

  129. That's where he starts. In verse eighteen. He says, here,

  130. see you blind, hear you deaf? And there he's speaking

  131. to the nations. He's speaking to those unfamiliar with God's ways, saying, hey,

  132. you should see what God is alike. You should hear

  133. what he is like. But then he turns in verse

  134. nineteen to Israel, to those who would be familiar with

  135. his ways, and says this, yeah, but who is blind

  136. as my servant? Who is as deaf as my dedicated one?

  137. Is deaf as the messenger whom I send. In other words,

  138. Israel was meant. His people were called to be a

  139. guide to the blind and a messenger to the untaught,

  140. and those unfamiliar with his ways were worse off by

  141. having his people around. They were even worse blind deaf,

  142. trapped in prison all So hold on I'm tracking with you,

  143. but I'm bothered by this term my servant, because I

  144. thought last week when we read about my servant, it

  145. was my servant whom I uphold in whom my soul delights.

  146. Isn't that who my servant is? Well, Isaiah uses my

  147. servant in a couple of different ways the street. Raise

  148. your hand if you consider yourself God servant? All right,

  149. pretty good population here, glad to see that in church.

  150. Now point up if in a different sense, you consider

  151. Jesus Christ to be God's servant, the unique son of God,

  152. the savior of the world. Okay, so we got hands

  153. both times. You are God's servant, he is God servant.

  154. And in Isaiah, God speaks of the Messiah to come

  155. as my servant, and he speaks of his people as

  156. my servant. And I think he does that to show

  157. this profound contrast between who he called his people to

  158. be and the one who actually answered that call. He

  159. called his people to be a guide to the blind,

  160. a messenger to the untaught, and those familiar with his

  161. ways did not answer that call. But there was one

  162. who did answer. In this case, in this passage my servant,

  163. he's talking about his people, those familiar with His ways.

  164. And so these are the descriptions blind, deaf, trapped under judgment,

  165. And they are descriptions of everyone, everywhere, at every time,

  166. apart from God's redemptive adoption, both those familiar with his

  167. ways and those unfamiliar with his ways. This is every

  168. son and daughter's story. That's what Romans three says. All,

  169. both those familiar and unfamiliar, all are under sin, and

  170. none is righteous, No, not one, No one understands, no

  171. one seeks for God. Do you recognize who you were?

  172. But let me explain why it matters. The author of

  173. the Gospel of Luke captures this story, this account of

  174. Jesus visiting someone for lunch, a guy named Simon. There's

  175. a guy named Simon who would think to himself, I'm

  176. not so bad blind, that's a lot death. I'm not

  177. so sure. Trapped in sin and under judgment. I don't

  178. know about that. I've known God and his ways for

  179. a long time, but I might need a little help.

  180. So let me invite Jesus over. And he invites Jesus over,

  181. and he's like, no big deal, Jesus, it's going to

  182. be a very casual thing. Just come on over. We'll

  183. have some other people too, we'll make some hummus sandwiches.

  184. It's I'm just I figure we should hang out. And

  185. so Jesus comes over and Simon is very casual about

  186. the whole thing. She's just say, hey, come on in,

  187. meet missus. Simon, you know, make it like just tab

  188. a seat. And there are other people there, and there's

  189. a woman who makes her way into the lunch crowd

  190. at Simon's house, and she makes her way to Jesus

  191. and she doesn't take him casually at all. In fact,

  192. she begins weeping over him. She can't stop crying, and

  193. she can't stop kissing his feet. In fact, she makes

  194. a muddy mess out of his feet with her tears,

  195. and so she just starts drying them with her hair.

  196. And Simon is like, this is a bad look. This

  197. is a bad look for me because this is kind

  198. of a scene. I wanted this to be super casual.

  199. It's also a bad look for Jesus. I mean, if

  200. he knew, you know, what kind of woman this is,

  201. he wouldn't be letting her touch him like that. And

  202. at that minute, Jesus looks at Simon and says, I

  203. have something to say to you. Simon, still taking him casually,

  204. says say it. Jesus says, there was a money lender

  205. and there were two people who owed him money. One

  206. owed him a million dollars and the other owned him

  207. one hundred grand, and he forgave both the debts. Simon,

  208. which do you think loved that money lender more? And

  209. Simon says, well, I guess the one who was forgiven more.

  210. And Jesus says, so you do get it. Jack came

  211. here to your casual little lunch gathering. You didn't greet

  212. me with a kiss of honor. You didn't wash my feet,

  213. You didn't even give me a bawl for me to

  214. wash my feet myself. And this woman, she hasn't stopped

  215. kissing my feet because she recognizes she was blind, death,

  216. trapped in sin and under judgment. She recognizes who she was.

  217. And my question, Christian, is do you recognize who you were?

  218. Because if you don't recognize who you were, you will

  219. not love. You will not extend the forgiveness you've been extended.

  220. You will not show others grace, you will not worship

  221. with tears on Jesus' feet. It'll be a casual thing

  222. to you. You'll come in, you'll go out, you'll murmur

  223. these words words, your mind will just drift when we

  224. speak of and sing of the love of God. But

  225. if you recognize who you were, you won't stop kissing

  226. Jesus' feet. And listen, non Christian, if you're here and

  227. you hear this, I want you to know that not

  228. only does our recognizing does our recognizing who we were

  229. as Christians drive us to wonder and love and praise,

  230. it might also drive you to coming to Him Right now.

  231. You don't have to be scared of realizing that you

  232. are blind, that you are deaf, that you are trapped

  233. in sin and under judgment. You don't have to be

  234. afraid of those things, not because they're good things, but

  235. because they may lead you to the best thing that

  236. could ever happen to you. And every Christian here could

  237. testify to that, because it's every son and daughter's story

  238. and it could be your story too. Who were you?

  239. You were blind, deaf, trapped and under judgment? What did

  240. God do? What did God do? That's where our passage

  241. goes next. These are God's next two words. But now,

  242. but now God does something By declaration he produces something

  243. by proclamation. And I used four descriptions earlier, so I'll

  244. use four descriptions again. Here's what he did. Redeemed, dwelt with, gathered,

  245. and made away. He redeems. Look at verse one, there

  246. fear not, for I have redeemed you. He dwells with.

  247. Verse two, when you pass through the waters, I will

  248. be with you. And in five, fear not, for I

  249. am with you. He gathers. Verse six, I will say

  250. to the north give up, and to the south do

  251. not withhold. Bring my sons from afar, and my daughters

  252. from the end of the earth. Bring out the people

  253. who are blind and death. And he makes away verse thirteen.

  254. There is none who can deliver from my hand I work,

  255. and who can turn it back. Verse sixteen, Thus says

  256. the lord who makes a way, who makes a path,

  257. and nineteen, I will make a way. That's what he does.

  258. He redeems, he dwells with, he gathers, he makes away.

  259. This is what God did, and this is what God does.

  260. You were blind, deaf, trapped under judgment. He redeems, dwells with, gathers,

  261. and makes away. This is a good place for an amen.

  262. But you might wonder does that really apply to us?

  263. I mean, I see these words. I definitely preacher, I

  264. definitely see these words in this book. But those are

  265. old words. Those are old words to an old time,

  266. to old people in a different situation. How is it

  267. that you can take these words from this old book

  268. and you can toss them in our direction? Does that count?

  269. Can you do that? What makes you think you can

  270. do that? I'll tell you why, because the Apostle Paul

  271. takes up this passage right here and he brings it

  272. to the Christian Church in corinth and two Corinthians, chapter six, saying,

  273. I will make my dwelling among them. You shall be

  274. sons and daughters to me. He's lifting right out of

  275. this spot right here. We believers are the dwelling place

  276. of God. We are gathered by Him, we are his

  277. sons and daughters. And the Holy Spirit, through the Apostle

  278. Paul takes these words from right here to the exiles

  279. of Judah Uh and he the Spirit just spreads them

  280. beyond that time and beyond these people, and he spreads

  281. them into his people in Christ, into a first century

  282. church in corinth a church full of gentiles just like us,

  283. in a twenty first century church in San Antonio and says,

  284. just as God gathered Judah from parts of the world

  285. and redeemed as sons and daughters because He is the

  286. only savior for the praise of his grace at that time,

  287. in an even greater way, God is gathering from every

  288. single part of the world, every tribe and tongue and nation,

  289. and redeeming as sons and daughters by his proclamation and

  290. incarnation and resurrection and ascension, because He is the only

  291. savior for the praise of his grace for all time.

  292. This is ours. This is every son and daughter's story.

  293. And that story is blind death, trapped under judgment to redeemed,

  294. dwelt with, gathered and made away. Did you notice perhaps

  295. what God's action is based on. Did it seem as

  296. though the blind managed to feel their way back to God?

  297. Is that the story? Does it seem as though the

  298. death started listening more closely with their ear cupped around,

  299. with their handcupped around their ear. Does it seem like

  300. the trapped manage to free themselves? Is that your story?

  301. Or that you who were under judgment just worked your

  302. way into a better standing with God? No, God takes

  303. the decisive initiating action. He declares it that you may

  304. know and believe me and understand that I am He,

  305. I am the Lord. Besides me, there is no savior.

  306. God is the sovereign initiator of salvation. Yes, God calls

  307. you to walk in repentance. Yes, God calls you to

  308. walk in holiness. But don't ever think you walked your

  309. way back to him. He works his redemptive adoption by

  310. his own calling. I have called you by name, your

  311. mind rush just in my eyes and honored, and I

  312. love you because you're mine. That's how my wife coaches

  313. my kids all the time. My wife is constantly planting

  314. little gospel seeds in their minds. She's sneaky like that.

  315. And since they were infants, she would say to them,

  316. I love you, Do you know why? And from the

  317. time they were able to talk back, they would come

  318. up with reasons and she would shoot them down. No,

  319. I don't love you because you're good. No, I don't

  320. love you because you were cooperative with your brothers this afternoon,

  321. although I did appreciate that. No, I don't love you

  322. because you make good grades. You could make better ones.

  323. Do you know why? I love you? And She repeated

  324. the same thing every time until they started repeating it back.

  325. I love you because your mind, your mind, and God

  326. has that question for you. Do you know why he

  327. loves you? Do you think that his love for you

  328. hinges on your self righteousness, your produced works? Is that

  329. your story? If he was to ask you this morning,

  330. do you know why I love you? Do you know

  331. why you are precious and honored in my eyes? And

  332. I love you? I hope you would answer back, he

  333. loved me because I'm yours. And there's some of you

  334. here right now who have this sense of him calling

  335. you to himself. And you've resisted coming to him all

  336. your life for a variety of reasons, but maybe right now,

  337. deep down, it's because you think you need to earn

  338. his grace. You think you can't be loved by him

  339. because you aren't lovely. You have missed the logic of

  340. his grace. He loves the unlovely, He redeems the trapped

  341. in sin, He pardons those under judgment. Like I heard

  342. another preacher say, not long ago, do you get cleaned

  343. up to take a shower, then you've missed the logic

  344. of the shower. Just come to him for grace. That's

  345. every son and daughter's story, undeserved grace. So who you were,

  346. that's what he did. Now we've been putting this story

  347. together with these three questions, who you were and what

  348. he did? And here's the third, and we'll be quick.

  349. Why did he do it? Why did God do what

  350. he did? To what ends? Did God rescue the blind?

  351. Does it have something to do with the rescuer or

  352. does it have something to do with the rescued? Is

  353. this something to do with him or is this something

  354. to do with us? What we can see it has

  355. something to do with him, because it's for his glory,

  356. it says in verse seven, bring him everyone who's called

  357. by my name, who I created for my glory. I

  358. has something to do with him, And we can also

  359. see it has something to do with us, because in

  360. verse tenants, this is for our understanding. You are my witnesses,

  361. that you may know and believe me and understand that

  362. I am He. So it has something to do with us,

  363. and we can see that it has something to do

  364. with him in the very last verse of this passage,

  365. right the people whom I formed for myself. But we

  366. can also see that it has something to do with

  367. us in that same verse that they may declare my praise.

  368. These two work together. Phijians one says it like this.

  369. He has adopted us to himself as sons and daughters

  370. through Jesus Christ, to the praise of his glorious grace,

  371. his grace on display, his grace on display. It's about

  372. Him and his grace and his glory, his grace on display,

  373. reflected through you, reflected through your praise, reflected through your witness.

  374. It's like those old fashioned lights, the way old fashioned

  375. beacons worked or flashlights worked. You had a fire that

  376. was the light source, but you also had a mirror

  377. that would gather the light and shine it wherever he

  378. was designed to go. And in that way also we

  379. have these two things working together. God's glory, God's grace,

  380. God's character, his redemption. It's all about him, but your testimony,

  381. your life, your praise, your worship pointing into a world

  382. in which God has designed it to go to light

  383. up a room so that we can see reality, or

  384. light up a coastline so that others might come safely home.

  385. You may ask, well, that reflection, how do I do it?

  386. How do I reflect His grace? How do I bear

  387. that witness. I'll give you two ways right now, and

  388. one of them you can do right now. It's just

  389. passionate worship. Passionate worship right now and just a moment,

  390. we're gonna all stand and sing, and as we reflect

  391. the grace that God has shown us based on who

  392. we were, blind, death, trapped in sin, under judgment, the

  393. worship that he deserves is the kind that never stops

  394. kissing his feet, never stops crime over the redemption we've

  395. been shown if we see who we were and we

  396. see what He's done. But not only passionate worship, also

  397. this just tell your story. Tell your story. God has

  398. rescued the blind to the praise of his grace. That's

  399. your story. But your story, although it's the same as

  400. every other's story, it's every son and daughter's story, your

  401. story is also unique. You've got details, details I'm sure

  402. you're not proud of, and it's time to tell it.

  403. It's time to tell it. You can just it's not

  404. actually that hard to bring it up with coworkers or neighbors.

  405. Just say, look for your opportunities. I'm a Christian. It's

  406. the most important thing in my life. I would love

  407. to tell you my story sometimes. That's all I have

  408. to say. I'm a Christian, it's thing in my life.

  409. I would love to tell you my story sometimes. And

  410. I guarantee you no one will take you up on

  411. that at the moment, just that would be very strange.

  412. Almost everybody goes, well, I'm going to extract myself from

  413. this conversation today, and then you'll get a text. If

  414. you keep them opening up that door that way, you'll

  415. get a text. Because funny thing about blind people. Blind

  416. people bump into things, Trapped people end up feeling the

  417. claustrophobic situation, and you'll get a text saying, hey, remember

  418. how you said, and they'll put it in the weirdest

  419. ways how you said you know you're a Christian? Or

  420. you would tell us your story and I'd like that.

  421. I'd like to know your story because and they might

  422. tell you what they've bumped into and then you just

  423. open your mouth say that's scary to that. I think

  424. God would say this, fear not for I have redeemed you.

  425. Fear not for I am with you. Open up your

  426. mouth and fear not, for I have placed my favor

  427. on you. I love you. You are precious in my eyes.

  428. I have called you by name. Just tell your story.

  429. It's every son and daughter's story. Would you stand with

  430. me and pray? Heavenly Father, we ask for opportunity. Lord,

  431. Would you give us opportunity now that we would tell

  432. of your grace? There are those who are living in blindness,

  433. those who are living trapped in sin, those who are

  434. living under judgment. Lord, would you give us the kind

  435. of boldness that you've called from us to open up

  436. our mouths and tell the story of your grace? Would

  437. you give us opportunity and would you give us that

  438. kind of boldness? Lord? Would you continue to reflect back

  439. to us an awareness of the depth of the grace

  440. that you've shown us who we were? Lord? Would would

  441. would our would our hearts and souls never stop kissing

  442. you for your grace? Would we see it for what

  443. it is? Will we see you for who you are

  444. and the work that you've done, what you've done to

  445. make us your sons, what you've done to make us

  446. your daughters, And testify to the world. We ask in

  447. Jesus name, Amen, let's sing about it.
