  1. Well, good morning, everyone.

  2. Could I welcome you to this service of worship

  3. and to any who may be joining the service

  4. through the YouTube link.

  5. Let us worship God by singing to his praise

  6. from Psalm 99A, page 130 of the Psalter.

  7. The Lord reigns from his throne on high.

  8. Let all the nations quake.

  9. He sits between the cherubim.

  10. So let the whole earth shake.

  11. Great is the Lord on Zion Hill, exalted over all.

  12. Upon his great and holy name, let all the nations call.

  13. The King loves truth and equity, established by his might.

  14. In Jacob, you have done for us all that is just and right.

  15. Exalt the Lord our God with us.

  16. Let all the world abroad before his footstool worship him.

  17. For holy is the Lord.

  18. Let us sing these verses.

  19. The Lord reigns from his throne on high.

  20. The Lord reigns from his throne on high.

  21. Let all the nations quake.

  22. He sits between the cherubim.

  23. So let the whole earth shake.

  24. Great is the Lord on Zion Hill, exalted over all.

  25. Upon his great and holy name.

  26. Upon his great and holy name.

  27. Let all the nations call.

  28. The King loves truth and equity, established by his might.

  29. In Jacob, you have done for us all that is just and right.

  30. Exalt the Lord our God with us.

  31. Let all the world abroad before his footstool worship him.

  32. For holy is the Lord.

  33. Let us engage in prayer.

  34. Almighty God, we thank thee for the opening words of the psalm that we have newly sung.

  35. Let us pray.

  36. Words that remind us that thou art a sovereign God.

  37. That thou art a sovereign king.

  38. The Lord reigns.

  39. And that thou art a holy king.

  40. Holy with a transcendent holiness.

  41. Holy in your righteousness.

  42. Holy in your righteousness.

  43. Holy in your grace.

  44. Holy in your righteousness.

  45. Holy in your grace.

  46. Holy in your grace.

  47. Oh, may we be found today acknowledging and bowing down before the holiness of our sovereign God.

  48. It prompted praise on the part of the seraphim.

  49. Who beheld the holiness of almighty God.

  50. As they went to and fro proclaiming.

  51. That God is indeed holy.

  52. Holy, holy, holy.

  53. That your holiness sets you apart from all your creatures.

  54. Grant, O Lord, that we may come into thy presence today with that sense of awe and reverential fear.

  55. In the knowledge that we are in the presence of our trice holy God.

  56. May we come upon the knees of our heart.

  57. Lord, that we are in the presence of our heart before thee.

  58. Acknowledging with thy servant of old.

  59. That we are of unclean lips.

  60. Just as thy servant felt.

  61. When he came before the holiness of God.

  62. In the vision that was granted to him.

  63. When he saw the Lord high and lifted up in the temple.

  64. O Lord, we thank thee.

  65. That with a holy God there is forgiveness.

  66. That with a holy God there is cleansing.

  67. That thou hast made provision.

  68. For sinners to draw near to thee.

  69. Grant thy blessing upon us as we reflect on a part of thy truth today.

  70. Blessed richly to our hearts.

  71. May it reach into our innermost being.

  72. And may our lives be gripped by the power of the truth.

  73. So that we come in truth to serve the Christ of God.

  74. To be joyous subjects of the sovereign king.

  75. Who reigns supremely over the affairs of men.

  76. Although there may be much.

  77. In a world that is beyond our understanding.

  78. Much that we find deeply mysterious.

  79. Yet, O Lord, we draw comfort from this fact.

  80. That the Lord reigns.

  81. Grant most gracious God.

  82. That our hope and confidence.

  83. Might be placed today and every day.

  84. In the Lord who reigns.

  85. So that as we come before thee today.

  86. We may not be despondent or downcast.

  87. But uplifted by the thought.

  88. That thou art reigning.

  89. And that thy will.

  90. Is being performed.

  91. And that nothing but nothing can thwart.

  92. The will of the reigning sovereign king.

  93. That your will will always win out.

  94. Despite every.

  95. Every hostility and enmity.

  96. That is aroused by the forces of darkness.

  97. In seeking to thwart the will.

  98. Of the reigning sovereign king.

  99. We bless thy name that this is so.

  100. Grant thy blessing.

  101. We pray thee on each home and family.

  102. As we are found before thee today.

  103. Thou knowest the needs of each and all.

  104. Thou knowest those who may be here.

  105. With heavy burdens.

  106. With crushing burdens.

  107. Thou knowest those who may be here today.

  108. Looking for a token for good.

  109. That they belong to those.

  110. Those who are indeed the subjects of the sovereign king.

  111. And who rejoice in his reign.

  112. Grant thy blessing upon them.

  113. We pray for any who may be mourning the loss of loved ones.

  114. And to her today.

  115. The burden of sorrow.

  116. The burden of sorrow.

  117. As they mourn the passing of those dear to them.

  118. We know of some.

  119. Who have that burden.

  120. Some who came face to face.

  121. Unexpectedly with that.

  122. With that burden of sorrow.

  123. With that burden of sorrow.

  124. As they came face to face.

  125. With what?

  126. Perhaps they didn't want to hear.

  127. As those whom they loved in life.

  128. Were taken unexpectedly from them.

  129. With that burden of sorrow.

  130. Comfort them.

  131. We pray thee.

  132. With the comfort.

  133. That alone is able.

  134. To reach into distraught hearts and lives.

  135. When death removes.

  136. A member of a family.

  137. Unexpectedly.

  138. As often death comes.

  139. We pray thy blessing.

  140. For those who may be under thine hand in illness.

  141. Confined to their homes.

  142. Or in hospital care.

  143. Or in residential care.

  144. Grant, O Lord, thy blessing on each and all.

  145. According to their needs.

  146. And bless those who are providing care for them.

  147. We give thee thanks.

  148. For all who are involved in the care system.

  149. Doctors and nurses.

  150. Care assistants.

  151. All who provide.

  152. For those unable to provide for themselves.

  153. O grant, O Lord.

  154. That we be mindful.

  155. Of those who are involved.

  156. In the care system.

  157. The burdens that they bear.

  158. The duties that evolve upon them.

  159. The responsibilities that are theirs.

  160. Help them to fulfill these responsibilities.

  161. As they daily carry out their tasks.

  162. Help us now as we turn to thy truth.

  163. Bless the other section of the congregation.

  164. And thy servant.

  165. As he engages in the act of worship.

  166. In the Gaelic language.

  167. Grant thy blessing upon them.

  168. Uphold and sustain them.

  169. We pray thee.

  170. In the duties that evolve upon them.

  171. Bless all who go forth in thy name.

  172. And to the ends of the earth.

  173. Bless, we pray thee.

  174. The Slavic Gospel members.

  175. Who are carrying out deputation work.

  176. We give thee thanks for their commitment.

  177. For their zeal.

  178. For their enthusiasm.

  179. And for the encouraging reports.

  180. That they have brought to us.

  181. We pray that thou wouldst bless them today.

  182. In the particular duties that evolve upon them.

  183. Wherever they are preaching.

  184. The unsearchable riches of Christ.

  185. Cleanse in the blood.

  186. In Jesus name we ask it with forgiveness of sin.

  187. Amen.

  188. Let us now read from the New Testament.

  189. From the Gospel according to Mark.

    Mark 15 chapter mention

  190. Chapter 15.

  191. And at verse 21.

  192. And they compelled a passerby.

  193. Simon of Cyrene.

  194. Who was coming in from the country.

  195. The father of Alexander and Rufus.

  196. To carry his cross.

  197. And they brought him to the place called Golgotha.

  198. Which means place of a skull.

  199. And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh.

  200. But he did not take it.

  201. And they crucified him.

  202. And divided his garments among them.

  203. Casting lots for them.

  204. To decide what it should take.

  205. And it was the third hour.

  206. When they crucified him.

  207. And the inscription of the charge against him.

  208. Read.

  209. The king of the Jews.

  210. And with him they crucified two robbers.

  211. One on his right.

  212. And one on his left.

  213. And those who passed by derided him.

  214. Waking their heads.

  215. And saying.

  216. And saying.

  217. Aha.

  218. You who would destroy the temple.

  219. And rebuild it in three days.

  220. Save yourself.

  221. And come down from the cross.

  222. So also the chief priests with the scribes.

  223. Mocked him to one another.

  224. And saying.

  225. He saved others.

  226. He cannot save himself.

  227. Let the Christ.

  228. The king of Israel.

  229. Come down now from the cross.

  230. That we may see and believe.

  231. Those who were crucified with him.

  232. Also reviled him.

  233. When the sixth hour had come.

  234. There was darkness over the whole land.

  235. Until the ninth hour.

  236. And at the ninth hour.

  237. Jesus cried with a loud voice.

  238. Eli.

  239. Eli lama sabachthani.

  240. Which means.

  241. My God.

  242. My God.

  243. Why have you forsaken me?

  244. And some of the bystanders.

  245. Hearing it said.

  246. Behold.

  247. He is calling Elijah.

  248. And someone ran.

  249. And filled a sponge.

  250. With sour wine.

  251. Put it on a reed.

  252. And gave it to him to drink.

  253. Saying.

  254. Wait.

  255. Let us see.

  256. Whether Elijah will come.

  257. To take him down.

  258. And Jesus uttered.

  259. A loud cry.

  260. And breathed.

  261. And breathed his last.

  262. And the curtain of the temple.

  263. Was torn in two.

  264. From top to bottom.

  265. And when the centurion.

  266. Who stood facing him.

  267. Saw that in this way.

  268. He breathed his last.

  269. He said.

  270. Truly.

  271. This man.

  272. Was the son of God.

  273. There were also women.

  274. Looking on from a distance.

  275. The Christians.

  276. Among whom were.

  277. Mary Magdalene.

  278. And Mary.

  279. The mother of James.

  280. The younger.

  281. And of.

  282. Joseph.

  283. And Salome.

  284. When he was in Galilee.

  285. They followed him.

  286. And ministered to him.

  287. And there were also.

  288. Many other women.

  289. Who came up with him.

  290. To Jerusalem.

  291. Amen.

  292. And may he bless to us.

  293. That reading.

  294. From his truth.

  295. Let us further sing to his praise.

  296. From.

  297. Psalm 22.

  298. Page 26.

  300. Psalter.

  304. Psalter.

  305. At verse 14.

  306. And the tune is.

  307. Rockingham.

  308. Apologies to the presenter.

  309. I forgot to.

  310. Mention the tune.

  311. For the first song.

  312. Psalm 22.

  313. Page 26.

  314. At verse 14.

  315. Like water.

  316. I am emptied out.

  317. And all my bones.

  318. Are torn apart.

  319. My inmost being.

  320. Melts away.

  321. And into wax.

  322. Is turned my heart.

  323. My strength.

  324. Is like.

  325. Shattered clay.

  326. And these verses.

  327. Apply particularly.

  328. To the Lord Jesus.

  329. On the cross.

  330. And as I fight.

  331. To draw my breath.

  332. My tongue.

  333. Is sticking.

  334. To my jaws.

  335. You lay me.

  336. In the dust of death.

  337. A pack of dogs.

  338. Encloses me.

  339. Their circle.

  340. Round me.

  341. Is complete.

  342. I am beset.

  343. By evil men.

  344. And they have pierced.

  345. My hands.

  346. And feet.

  347. I count the number.

  348. Of my bones.

  349. With gloating eyes.

  350. The people.

  351. Stir.

  352. They throw the dice.

  353. To get my coat.

  354. Among themselves.

  355. My clothes.

  356. They share.

  357. Let us sing these verses.

  358. Like water.

  359. I am emptied out.

  360. Like water.

  361. I am emptied out.

  362. And all my bones are torn apart.

  363. Like water I am emptied out, and all my bones are torn apart.

  364. My inmost being melts away, and into wax is darn my heart.

  365. My strength is dried like shattered clay, and as I fight to throw my breath,

  366. My tongue is sticking to my jaws.

  367. You lay me in the dust of death.

  368. A pack of dogs encloses me, their circle round me is complete.

  369. I am beset by evil men, and they have pierced my hands and feet.

  370. I count the number on my board.

  371. With floating eyes the people stare.

  372. They throw the dice to get my coat.

  373. Among themselves my close they share.

  374. Let us now turn to the part of Scripture that we read.

  375. Gospel according to Mark, chapter 15.

    Mark 15 chapter mention

  376. And we may read again at verse 39.

  377. And when the centurion who stood facing him saw that in this way he breathed his lust,

  378. he said, truly, this man was the Son of God.

  379. The gospel accounts tell us of very strange happenings which coincided with the death of Christ.

  380. And one of these that are mentioned is the tearing of the temple veil in two from top to bottom.

  381. Three of the gospel writers refer to it, Matthew, Mark, and Luke.

  382. Both Matthew and Mark associate the tearing of the curtain with the loud voice cry of the Lord Jesus on the cross and his final breath.

  383. Some query which temple curtain was torn.

  384. But I think it is safe to assume that it was the curtain or the veil that separated the holy place from the most holy place of the temple.

  385. You may remember that the holy place was frequented on a daily basis by the duty priests who ministered there.

  386. The most holy place was only entered once a year by the high priest on the great day of atonement.

  387. How do we explain the phenomenon that this curtain was torn from the top to the bottom?

  388. No one, no gospel writer, refers to anyone with a knife or a scissor trying to tear it in two.

  389. It was apparently made of very thick material, not easily torn.

  390. And the gospel writers record that it was torn simultaneously with the moment of the death of Christ at three in the afternoon.

  391. On our timekeeping, in Jewish timekeeping, that is the ninth hour, the equivalent of three o'clock in the afternoon.

  392. That is when the duty priests would be offering the daily evening sacrifice.

  393. And for those ministering priests, it must have been a startling and surprising phenomenon to witness this taking place.

  394. Given their familiarity with the Old Testament teaching, it may have even filled them with fear.

  395. And the thought of death, now that the most holy place was exposed to their gaze.

  396. I doubt that they understood the significance of the event then.

  397. But they could not doubt that it was not attributable to anything natural.

  398. For those with the benefit of New Testament teaching, it was very significant that the temple curtain was torn in two.

  399. It signified the new order being ushered in.

  400. No longer was there an impediment.

  401. In drawing near to God, a new and living way had been opened up through the one sacrifice of the Lamb of God.

  402. A sacrifice that satisfied the demands and full of divine justice.

  403. On the writer in the letter to the Hebrews writes,

  404. Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the holiest by the blood of Jesus,

  405. by a new and living way which he consecrated for us,

  406. through the veil that is his flesh.

  407. Now, this strange phenomenon could only be verified by a limited number of people initially,

  408. the duty priests of that day.

  409. And no doubt, word would have spread quickly of what took place.

  410. There were also other accompanying events of which many were witnesses.

  411. There was, we are told, an earthquake.

  412. That certainly could be verified by a greater number of people.

  413. It took place during the afternoon.

  414. Many would probably be aware of the tremor.

  415. No information is given as to the severity of that tremor.

  416. We're not told if houses were destroyed.

  417. But what we are told by Matthew in his account is that the earthquake and the rocks were split.

  418. The tearing of the curtain is not attributed to the force of the earthquake by any of the gospel writers.

  419. They speak first of the tearing of the curtain,

  420. and then they speak of the earthquake,

  421. and they tell that the rocks were split.

  422. Interestingly, in the original language,

  423. the same root word is used to speak of the veil being torn and of the rocks being split.

  424. The same power that tore the veil or the curtain,

  425. thick as it was in the temple,

  426. was also the power that split the rocks.

  427. They were torn asunder,

  428. and the impression that you get is that they were torn like someone might tear a piece of paper.

  429. There was also another unusual occurrence.

  430. Matthew writes,

  431. and the graves were opened,

  432. and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised,

  433. and coming out of the graves after his resurrection,

  434. they went into the holy city and appeared to many.

  435. So you could say that these three events were not everyday occurrences.

  436. They weren't events that you could shut your eyes to

  437. and pretend that they did not happen.

  438. The earth quaked,

  439. the rocks were split,

  440. the graves were opened,

  441. and bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep.

  442. Notice,

  443. not all the bodies,

  444. bodies of those saints.

  445. And notice also

  446. the way in which the writers

  447. describe death

  448. for those who had been saints.

  449. They had fallen asleep,

  450. and how very

  451. suggestive that is.

  452. And that is how the Bible frequently speaks

  453. of the death of those who die in Christ.

  454. They sleep in Christ,

  455. and it is most suggestive.

  456. Now,

  457. all of these occurrences

  458. were designed, I believe,

  459. to catch the attention

  460. of people at that time.

  461. We are told

  462. how all these combined events,

  463. including the way in which Christ died,

  464. affected some.

  465. And Mark,

  466. in this passage that we read,

  467. tells us

  468. of one particular individual

  469. who I wish to focus on

  470. this morning in our reflection.

  471. An army officer,

  472. a Roman centurion.

  473. Mark records for us

  474. the assessment

  475. that this man made,

  476. and his assessment

  477. is an eyewitness statement

  478. or account.

  479. So,

  480. who gave

  481. this account?

  482. What did he see?

  483. Secondly,

  484. what did he see and hear?

  485. Thirdly,

  486. what did he say?

  487. And fourthly,

  488. how does this account

  489. speak to us?

  490. Who gave it?

  491. And the answer to the question is,

  492. I don't know.

  493. Because the gospel writers

  494. do not see fit

  495. to disclose his name,

  496. to furnish us with details

  497. of his background.

  498. Obviously,

  499. the gospel writers,

  500. the Holy Spirit,

  501. influencing the gospel writers,

  502. didn't consider

  503. that that information

  504. was really important.

  505. And so,

  506. what we are told about this man

  507. is really minimal.

  508. He was an army officer

  509. in the service of the Roman Empire,

  510. probably a Gentile.

  511. The fact that he is called

  512. a centurion

  513. indicates

  514. that he was responsible

  515. for a hundred soldiers.

  516. That's

  517. about the total

  518. of the scant information

  519. that we are given.

  520. So,

  521. he remains unnamed.

  522. All we know is

  523. that he appears

  524. to be in charge

  525. of the execution squad,

  526. overseeing

  527. the crucifixion

  528. of Jesus

  529. and remember

  530. two others

  531. who were crucified

  532. alongside Jesus.

  533. And Mark

  534. portrays him

  535. as

  536. watching

  537. proceedings.

  538. Mark tells us

  539. he stood

  540. opposite Jesus.

  541. In other words,

  542. he was able

  543. to observe

  544. minutely

  545. what was taking place,

  546. possibly

  547. doing so

  548. to ensure

  549. that no one

  550. would seek

  551. to intervene

  552. and remove

  553. Jesus from the cross.

  554. I suppose

  555. you could say

  556. that was part

  557. of his duty

  558. as an officer

  559. on guard duty.

  560. But

  561. in the overriding

  562. mysterious

  563. providence

  564. of God,

  565. he was appointed

  566. to this duty.

  567. And

  568. it seems to me

  569. you cannot

  570. but marvel

  571. at how

  572. the Lord

  573. uses

  574. steps

  575. in our

  576. providence

  577. for our

  578. spiritual

  579. good

  580. without us

  581. being aware

  582. of how

  583. our steps

  584. are being

  585. directed

  586. in a

  587. particular

  588. way.

  589. And I hope

  590. we can see

  591. that in the

  592. life of this

  593. man

  594. as I

  595. develop

  596. the lecture.

  597. Certainly

  598. God moves

  599. in mysterious

  600. ways.

  601. his wonders

  602. to perform.

  603. Here is a man

  604. fulfilling orders

  605. from his

  606. superiors

  607. and through

  608. the instructions

  609. that are given

  610. to him

  611. and the duties

  612. entrusted

  613. to him,

  614. he comes

  615. to formulate

  616. a very

  617. different

  618. opinion

  619. of Jesus

  620. Christ.

  621. not just

  622. a different

  623. opinion

  624. as to the

  625. fact that

  626. he is on

  627. the cross

  628. but a

  629. different

  630. opinion

  631. as to

  632. the identity

  633. of this

  634. person

  635. Jesus

  636. Christ.

  637. Christ.

  638. So who

  639. gave

  640. this

  641. account?

  642. An unnamed

  643. Gentile,

  644. centurion,

  645. obeying

  646. instructions

  647. and on

  648. duty

  649. at the

  650. cross.

  651. Secondly,

  652. what did he

  653. see and

  654. hear?

  655. And the

  656. impression is

  657. created by

  658. all the

  659. gospel writers

  660. who make

  661. mention of

  662. this man

  663. is that

  664. what he

  665. saw and

  666. heard

  667. is linked

  668. to his

  669. testimony.

  670. And it

  671. seems to me

  672. that there

  673. are two

  674. aspects

  675. to what

  676. he saw

  677. and heard.

  678. First,

  679. there is

  680. clear

  681. indisputable

  682. evidence

  683. for some

  684. of the

  685. things that

  686. he saw

  687. and heard.

  688. But secondly,

  689. there are

  690. also things

  691. that we

  692. may speculate

  693. he saw

  694. and heard,

  695. but of

  696. which I

  697. cannot give

  698. clear proof

  699. from the

  700. Bible that

  701. he did.

  702. And I'd

  703. like to

  704. deal with

  705. a second

  706. of these

  707. first.

  708. John's

  709. gospel

  710. tells us

  711. that when

  712. Jesus was

  713. arrested

  714. in

  715. Gethsemane,

  716. that Judas

  717. came

  718. along

  719. with

  720. accompanied

  721. by a

  722. detachment

  723. of

  724. troops

  725. and

  726. also

  727. others.

  728. Then Judas

  729. having received

  730. a detachment

  731. of troops

  732. and officers

  733. from the

  734. chief priests

  735. and Pharisees

  736. came there.

  737. And the

  738. word

  739. translated

  740. detachment

  741. is the

  742. word for

  743. a unit

  744. of soldiers

  745. which

  746. could

  747. consist

  748. of up

  749. to 600

  750. soldiers.

  751. commentators

  752. are of

  753. the view

  754. that

  755. the number

  756. present

  757. when Jesus

  758. was arrested

  759. was not

  760. that many

  761. but that

  762. there could

  763. be

  764. up to

  765. 200.

  766. Was there

  767. even that

  768. many?

  769. It's not

  770. easy to

  771. determine

  772. from what

  773. is written.

  774. But when

  775. they were

  776. asked the

  777. question,

  778. whom are you

  779. seeking?

  780. And they

  781. responded,

  782. Jesus of

  783. Nazareth,

  784. John writes,

  785. now when

  786. he said

  787. to them,

  788. I am

  789. he,

  790. they drew

  791. back and

  792. fell to

  793. the ground.

  794. And the

  795. thrust of

  796. the Bible

  797. with the

  798. life of

  799. Jesus

  800. indicates

  801. that he

  802. veiled his

  803. glory when

  804. he appeared

  805. in this

  806. world in

  807. true human

  808. nature.

  809. But in

  810. that particular

  811. context,

  812. there is,

  813. as it

  814. were,

  815. a glimpse

  816. of his

  817. glory shines

  818. through the

  819. veil of

  820. his

  821. humanity.

  822. And even

  823. such a

  824. brief glimpse

  825. of his

  826. glory is

  827. enough to

  828. floor the

  829. arresting

  830. party.

  831. It's as

  832. if they

  833. were paralyzed.

  834. And the

  835. question I'd

  836. like to

  837. pose is

  838. this,

  839. was this

  840. centurion

  841. among them?

  842. Was he

  843. struck by

  844. the air

  845. of authority

  846. that

  847. emanated

  848. from this

  849. person

  850. whom they

  851. had been

  852. sent to

  853. arrest?

  854. And I

  855. don't

  856. discount the

  857. possibility,

  858. but I

  859. cannot prove,

  860. on the other

  861. hand,

  862. that he was

  863. there.

  864. Jesus

  865. permitted them

  866. to arrest

  867. him.

  868. He was

  869. taken to

  870. Annas,

  871. the high

  872. priest,

  873. to Pilate,

  874. to Herod,

  875. and back

  876. again to

  877. Pilate.

  878. and you

  879. know the

  880. story.

  881. His

  882. accuser

  883. stating that

  884. he claimed

  885. to be the

  886. Son of

  887. God.

  888. And from

  889. their

  890. mockery,

  891. they are

  892. in total

  893. denial as

  894. to the

  895. identity of

  896. this person.

  897. They are

  898. stating,

  899. by the way

  900. they treat

  901. Jesus,

  902. they do

  903. not believe

  904. for one

  905. moment that

  906. he is the

  907. Son of

  908. God.

  909. did this

  910. centurion,

  911. did he

  912. agree with

  913. that initial

  914. assessment?

  915. And again,

  916. I have to

  917. say,

  918. probably,

  919. but I

  920. cannot prove

  921. it.

  922. Jesus was

  923. mocked.

  924. He was

  925. assaulted.

  926. They beat

  927. him.

  928. John writes

  929. of how

  930. Jesus was

  931. ill-treated

  932. by the

  933. soldiers and

  934. how they

  935. mocked his

  936. claims.

  937. The

  938. soldiers

  939. twisted a

  940. crown of

  941. thorns and

  942. put it on

  943. his head.

  944. They put

  945. on him a

  946. purple robe.

  947. Then they

  948. said,

  949. Hail,

  950. King of

  951. the Jews.

  952. And they

  953. struck him

  954. with their

  955. hands.

  956. Was the

  957. centurion

  958. part of

  959. this group?

  960. It is

  961. possible

  962. that he

  963. witnessed

  964. all of

  965. these events,

  966. but I

  967. cannot

  968. produce

  969. the

  970. evidence

  971. from the

  972. Bible

  973. that he

  974. did.

  975. So,

  976. that's

  977. the

  978. second

  979. thing.

  980. We may

  981. speculate

  982. about that.

  983. But the

  984. first thing

  985. is this.

  986. There is

  987. clear,

  988. indisputable

  989. evidence for

  990. some of

  991. the things

  992. that he

  993. saw and

  994. heard.

  995. Matthew in

  996. his gospel

  997. narrative

  998. relates,

  999. the earthquake,

  1000. the rocks

  1001. were split,

  1002. and the

  1003. graves were

  1004. opened,

  1005. and many

  1006. bodies of

  1007. the saints

  1008. who had

  1009. fallen asleep

  1010. were raised

  1011. and coming

  1012. out of the

  1013. graves after

  1014. resurrection.

  1015. They went

  1016. into the

  1017. holy city

  1018. and appeared

  1019. to many.

  1020. So,

  1021. when the

  1022. centurion

  1023. and those

  1024. with him

  1025. who were

  1026. guarding

  1027. Jesus

  1028. saw the

  1029. earthquake

  1030. and the

  1031. things that

  1032. had happened,

  1033. they feared

  1034. greatly.

  1035. So,

  1036. these were

  1037. some things

  1038. that he

  1039. saw and

  1040. heard,

  1041. and they

  1042. resulted in

  1043. producing

  1044. fear in

  1045. the life

  1046. of this

  1047. man.

  1048. did that

  1049. indicate

  1050. that he

  1051. was fearful

  1052. of the

  1053. consequences

  1054. of what

  1055. he had

  1056. done in

  1057. carrying out

  1058. his orders?

  1059. Because it

  1060. is more than

  1061. likely that

  1062. he was

  1063. responsible for

  1064. issuing the

  1065. command to

  1066. nail Jesus

  1067. to the

  1068. cross.

  1069. He would

  1070. have witnessed

  1071. the meek

  1072. submission of

  1073. Jesus to

  1074. this most

  1075. inhumane

  1076. action.

  1077. There is no

  1078. evidence of

  1079. resistance or

  1080. struggle to

  1081. escape on

  1082. the part of

  1083. Jesus.

  1084. There is no

  1085. verbal abuse

  1086. aimed at the

  1087. soldiers who

  1088. carried out

  1089. the act of

  1090. nailing him

  1091. to the

  1092. cross.

  1093. Because this

  1094. is one of

  1095. whom the

  1096. prophet Isaiah

  1097. could write

  1098. hundreds of

  1099. years beforehand

  1100. as he spoke

  1101. of the

  1102. suffering servant

  1103. of Jehovah.

  1104. He was

  1105. oppressed and

  1106. he was

  1107. afflicted,

  1108. yet he

  1109. opened not

  1110. his marks.

  1111. He was

  1112. led as

  1113. a lamb

  1114. to the

  1115. slaughter.

  1116. And as a

  1117. sheep before

  1118. his shearer

  1119. was silent,

  1120. so he

  1121. opened not

  1122. his mouth.

  1123. So there

  1124. is Isaiah

  1125. predicting

  1126. with the

  1127. spirit of

  1128. prophecy the

  1129. silence of

  1130. the Lamb

  1131. of God

  1132. as he

  1133. comes before

  1134. those who

  1135. are sitting

  1136. in judgment

  1137. on him

  1138. and who

  1139. are ill

  1140. treating

  1141. him.

  1142. the

  1143. centurion

  1144. could not

  1145. but fail

  1146. to notice

  1147. the calm

  1148. demeanor

  1149. of Christ

  1150. in the

  1151. face of

  1152. such

  1153. provocation.

  1154. He would

  1155. have heard

  1156. the mocking

  1157. taunts

  1158. of those

  1159. who surrounded

  1160. the cross.

  1161. He would

  1162. have heard

  1163. the mocking

  1164. and the

  1165. initial

  1166. remonstration

  1167. of both

  1168. of the

  1169. men who

  1170. were crucified

  1171. on either

  1172. side of

  1173. Jesus

  1174. because both

  1175. of them

  1176. mocked

  1177. Jesus

  1178. initially

  1179. and the

  1180. centurion

  1181. would be

  1182. aware

  1183. of

  1184. the

  1185. character

  1186. of these

  1187. two men

  1188. and their

  1189. reputation.

  1190. Did

  1191. the

  1192. centurion

  1193. hear

  1194. the message

  1195. of

  1196. marvelous

  1197. grace

  1198. addressed

  1199. to one

  1200. of the

  1201. dying

  1202. thieves?

  1203. You

  1204. remember

  1205. what Jesus

  1206. said to

  1207. him.

  1208. Remember

  1209. he had

  1210. pleaded

  1211. with

  1212. Christ

  1213. Lord

  1214. remember

  1215. me.

  1216. It's

  1217. such

  1218. an

  1219. impressive

  1220. prayer

  1221. and it's

  1222. a prayer

  1223. that

  1224. fits

  1225. every one

  1226. of us.

  1227. Lord

  1228. remember

  1229. me.

  1230. And

  1231. you

  1232. remember

  1233. the

  1234. response

  1235. of

  1236. Christ.

  1237. Assuredly

  1238. I say

  1239. to you

  1240. today

  1241. you

  1242. will

  1243. be

  1244. with

  1245. me

  1246. in

  1247. paradise.

  1248. did

  1249. Jesus

  1250. speak

  1251. it

  1252. loudly

  1253. enough

  1254. for

  1255. the

  1256. centurion

  1257. to

  1258. hear?

  1259. It's

  1260. possible.

  1261. The

  1262. centurion

  1263. would also

  1264. have seen

  1265. the thick

  1266. judgmental

  1267. darkness

  1268. that

  1269. covered

  1270. the

  1271. sight

  1272. from

  1273. midday

  1274. until

  1275. 3pm.

  1276. He

  1277. must have

  1278. wondered

  1279. about

  1280. that.

  1281. he

  1282. would

  1283. have

  1284. heard

  1285. the

  1286. cry

  1287. of

  1288. dereliction

  1289. that

  1290. pierced

  1291. the

  1292. thick

  1293. darkness

  1294. when

  1295. Christ

  1296. cried

  1297. out

  1298. my

  1299. God

  1300. my

  1301. God

  1302. why

  1303. have

  1304. you

  1305. forsaken

  1306. me?

  1307. And

  1308. Mark

  1309. in this

  1310. particular

  1311. context

  1312. especially

  1313. links

  1314. the

  1315. testimony

  1316. of the

  1317. centurion

  1318. to

  1319. his

  1320. observation

  1321. of the

  1322. manner

  1323. in

  1324. which

  1325. Christ

  1326. died.

  1327. Mark

  1328. writes

  1329. and

  1330. Jesus

  1331. cried

  1332. out

  1333. with

  1334. a

  1335. loud

  1336. voice

  1337. and

  1338. breathed

  1339. his

  1340. last.

  1341. And

  1342. then

  1343. in

  1344. our

  1345. text

  1346. he

  1347. goes

  1348. on

  1349. to

  1350. write

  1351. so

  1352. when

  1353. the

  1354. centurion

  1355. who

  1356. stood

  1357. opposite

  1358. him

  1359. saw

  1360. that

  1361. he

  1362. cried

  1363. out

  1364. like

  1365. this

  1366. and

  1367. breathed

  1368. his

  1369. last

  1370. he

  1371. said

  1372. truly

  1373. this

  1374. man

  1375. was

  1376. the

  1377. son

  1378. of

  1379. God.

  1380. Now

  1381. we

  1382. know

  1383. that

  1384. people

  1385. respond

  1386. to

  1387. the

  1388. death

  1389. of

  1390. Christ

  1391. on

  1392. the

  1393. cross

  1394. in

  1395. different

  1396. ways.

  1397. If

  1398. you

  1399. in

  1400. your

  1401. life

  1402. that

  1403. the

  1404. death

  1405. of

  1406. Christ

  1407. means

  1408. that

  1409. you

  1410. are

  1411. forever

  1412. thanking

  1413. the

  1414. Lord

  1415. that

  1416. Christ

  1417. Jesus

  1418. came

  1419. into

  1420. the

  1421. world

  1422. to

  1423. seek

  1424. and

  1425. to

  1426. save

  1427. that

  1428. which

  1429. was

  1430. lost.

  1431. It

  1432. is

  1433. obvious

  1434. then

  1435. that

  1436. the

  1437. manner

  1438. of

  1439. Christ

  1440. dying

  1441. had

  1442. a

  1443. profound

  1444. effect

  1445. on

  1446. the

  1447. opinion

  1448. of

  1449. this

  1450. man

  1451. as

  1452. to

  1453. the

  1454. identity

  1455. of

  1456. Jesus

  1457. of

  1458. Nazareth.

  1459. He

  1460. heard

  1461. him

  1462. cry

  1463. with

  1464. a

  1465. loud

  1466. voice

  1467. and

  1468. he

  1469. saw

  1470. him

  1471. breathe

  1472. his

  1473. last.

  1474. Remember

  1475. Jesus

  1476. had

  1477. been

  1478. hanging

  1479. on

  1480. the

  1481. cross

  1482. for

  1483. six

  1484. hours

  1485. the

  1486. third

  1487. hour

  1488. to

  1489. the

  1490. ninth

  1491. hour

  1492. on

  1493. our

  1494. clock

  1495. nine

  1496. in the

  1497. morning

  1498. till

  1499. three

  1500. in the

  1501. afternoon.

  1502. He

  1503. heard

  1504. Jesus

  1505. cry

  1506. with

  1507. a

  1508. loud

  1509. voice

  1510. and

  1511. John

  1512. in

  1513. his

  1514. gospel

  1515. tells

  1516. us

  1517. that

  1518. Jesus

  1519. cried

  1520. out

  1521. it

  1522. is

  1523. finished.

  1524. In

  1525. the

  1526. Greek

  1527. it's

  1528. just

  1529. one

  1530. word

  1531. tetelestai.

  1532. Did

  1533. the

  1534. centurion

  1535. understand

  1536. the

  1537. significance

  1538. of what

  1539. Christ

  1540. said?

  1541. I

  1542. can't

  1543. be

  1544. sure

  1545. about

  1546. that.

  1547. But

  1548. I

  1549. think

  1550. he

  1551. would

  1552. certainly

  1553. have

  1554. found

  1555. it

  1556. peculiar

  1557. that

  1558. a

  1559. weakened

  1560. dying

  1561. person

  1562. should

  1563. have

  1564. the

  1565. energy

  1566. to

  1567. shout

  1568. with

  1569. a

  1570. loud

  1571. voice.

  1572. It's

  1573. not

  1574. what

  1575. you

  1576. normally

  1577. associate

  1578. with

  1579. the

  1580. act

  1581. of

  1582. dying.

  1583. John

  1584. tells

  1585. us

  1586. that

  1587. Jesus

  1588. bowing

  1589. his

  1590. head

  1591. gave

  1592. up

  1593. his

  1594. spirit

  1595. and

  1596. it's

  1597. as

  1598. if

  1599. John

  1600. is

  1601. telling

  1602. us

  1603. that

  1604. this

  1605. was

  1606. a

  1607. regal

  1608. act

  1609. on

  1610. the

  1611. part

  1612. of

  1613. Jesus

  1614. as

  1615. he

  1616. gave

  1617. himself

  1618. to

  1619. death.

  1620. Unlike

  1621. you

  1622. or

  1623. I

  1624. when

  1625. our

  1626. time

  1627. to

  1628. die

  1629. has

  1630. come

  1631. we

  1632. will

  1633. be

  1634. conquered

  1635. by

  1636. the

  1637. power

  1638. of

  1639. death.

  1640. Oh

  1641. yes

  1642. we

  1643. will

  1644. fight

  1645. it

  1646. as

  1647. long

  1648. as

  1649. we

  1650. are

  1651. able.

  1652. We

  1653. will

  1654. struggle

  1655. against

  1656. the

  1657. onset

  1658. of

  1659. death

  1660. but

  1661. the

  1662. power

  1663. of

  1664. death

  1665. will

  1666. conquer

  1667. you

  1668. and

  1669. me.

  1670. Christ

  1671. doesn't

  1672. come

  1673. first.

  1674. And

  1675. you

  1676. know

  1677. we

  1678. don't

  1679. know

  1680. when

  1681. that

  1682. will

  1683. be

  1684. or

  1685. where

  1686. it

  1687. will

  1688. be

  1689. do

  1690. we?

  1691. We

  1692. may

  1693. think

  1694. we

  1695. know

  1696. but

  1697. we

  1698. don't.

  1699. Just

  1700. in the

  1701. last

  1702. few

  1703. days

  1704. there

  1705. was

  1706. a

  1707. car

  1708. accident

  1709. in

  1710. the

  1711. Isle

  1712. of

  1713. Sky

  1714. the

  1715. parents

  1716. of

  1717. the

  1718. man

  1719. who

  1720. was

  1721. killed

  1722. in

  1723. that

  1724. accident

  1725. were

  1726. in

  1727. my

  1728. first

  1729. congregation

  1730. they're

  1731. not

  1732. alive

  1733. anymore

  1734. going

  1735. to

  1736. work

  1737. in

  1738. his

  1739. car

  1740. he

  1741. never

  1742. reaches

  1743. the

  1744. office

  1745. you

  1746. know

  1747. and

  1748. these

  1749. things

  1750. are

  1751. all

  1752. food

  1753. for

  1754. thought

  1755. we

  1756. don't

  1757. know

  1758. when

  1759. that

  1760. moment

  1761. is

  1762. going

  1763. to

  1764. come

  1765. abound

  1766. in

  1767. your

  1768. life

  1769. or

  1770. in

  1771. mine

  1772. but

  1773. here

  1774. Jesus

  1775. gives

  1776. himself

  1777. to

  1778. death

  1779. so

  1780. there's

  1781. a

  1782. world

  1783. of

  1784. a

  1785. difference

  1786. between

  1787. my

  1788. dying

  1789. your

  1790. dying

  1791. and

  1792. the

  1793. death

  1794. of

  1795. Christ

  1796. the

  1797. centurion

  1798. saw

  1799. and

  1800. heard

  1801. what

  1802. transpired

  1803. at

  1804. the

  1805. cross

  1806. he

  1807. may

  1808. have

  1809. even

  1810. seen

  1811. and

  1812. heard

  1813. what

  1814. took

  1815. place

  1816. from

  1817. the

  1818. moment

  1819. of

  1820. Jesus

  1821. arrest

  1822. in

  1823. Gethsemane

  1824. right up

  1825. to the

  1826. cross

  1827. and

  1828. beyond

  1829. I

  1830. cannot

  1831. prove

  1832. that

  1833. part

  1834. but

  1835. what

  1836. he

  1837. saw

  1838. and

  1839. heard

  1840. had

  1841. a

  1842. profound

  1843. effect

  1844. on

  1845. his

  1846. assessment

  1847. of

  1848. this

  1849. person

  1850. Jesus

  1851. of

  1852. Nazareth

  1853. what

  1854. did

  1855. he

  1856. see

  1857. and

  1858. hear

  1859. who

  1860. gave

  1861. this

  1862. account

  1863. thirdly

  1864. what

  1865. did

  1866. he

  1867. say

  1868. and

  1869. the

  1870. question

  1871. takes

  1872. us

  1873. right

  1874. into

  1875. the

  1876. heart

  1877. of

  1878. our

  1879. text

  1880. in

  1881. the

  1882. light

  1883. of

  1884. what

  1885. he

  1886. heard

  1887. and

  1888. saw

  1889. under

  1890. the

  1891. influence

  1892. of

  1893. the

  1894. Holy

  1895. Spirit

  1896. he

  1897. speaks

  1898. in

  1899. glowing

  1900. terms

  1901. of

  1902. the

  1903. identity

  1904. of

  1905. Jesus

  1906. of

  1907. Nazareth

  1908. you

  1909. know

  1910. many

  1911. saw

  1912. and

  1913. heard

  1914. what

  1915. the

  1916. centurion

  1917. saw

  1918. but

  1919. it

  1920. didn't

  1921. have

  1922. this

  1923. effect

  1924. on

  1925. them

  1926. many

  1927. people

  1928. hear

  1929. of

  1930. Jesus

  1931. Christ

  1932. and

  1933. you

  1934. may

  1935. be

  1936. even

  1937. here

  1938. this

  1939. morning

  1940. but

  1941. until

  1942. now

  1943. Jesus

  1944. Christ

  1945. has

  1946. not

  1947. had

  1948. a

  1949. transforming

  1950. effect

  1951. on

  1952. your

  1953. life

  1954. Luke

  1955. in

  1956. his

  1957. account

  1958. tells

  1959. us

  1960. so

  1961. when

  1962. the

  1963. centurion

  1964. saw

  1965. what

  1966. had

  1967. happened

  1968. he

  1969. glorified

  1970. God

  1971. saying

  1972. certainly

  1973. this

  1974. was

  1975. a

  1976. righteous

  1977. man

  1978. now

  1979. Luke's

  1980. record

  1981. suggests

  1982. the

  1983. centurion

  1984. was

  1985. expressing

  1986. words

  1987. that

  1988. exonerate

  1989. the

  1990. character

  1991. of

  1992. Jesus

  1993. while

  1994. both

  1995. Matthew

  1996. and

  1997. Mark's

  1998. accounts

  1999. are

  2000. more

  2001. a

  2002. declaration

  2003. of

  2004. the

  2005. identity

  2006. of

  2007. Jesus

  2008. of

  2009. Nazareth

  2010. if we

  2011. look at

  2012. Luke's

  2013. record

  2014. of what

  2015. is stated

  2016. by the

  2017. centurion

  2018. you can

  2019. see

  2020. how

  2021. what he

  2022. says

  2023. exonerates

  2024. the

  2025. character

  2026. of

  2027. Jesus

  2028. why do

  2029. I say

  2030. this

  2031. think

  2032. about

  2033. it

  2034. for

  2035. this

  2036. very

  2037. good

  2038. reason

  2039. that

  2040. this

  2041. form

  2042. of

  2043. capital

  2044. punishment

  2045. that he

  2046. was

  2047. undergoing

  2048. was

  2049. reserved

  2050. for

  2051. the

  2052. very

  2053. worst

  2054. of

  2055. crimes

  2056. now

  2057. that

  2058. was

  2059. true

  2060. of

  2061. the

  2062. two

  2063. who

  2064. were

  2065. being

  2066. put

  2067. to

  2068. death

  2069. alongside

  2070. Jesus

  2071. so

  2072. when

  2073. the

  2074. centurion

  2075. states

  2076. that

  2077. this

  2078. was

  2079. a

  2080. righteous

  2081. man

  2082. in

  2083. effect

  2084. he

  2085. is

  2086. stating

  2087. that

  2088. this

  2089. person

  2090. Jesus

  2091. of

  2092. Nazareth

  2093. is

  2094. innocent

  2095. as

  2096. one

  2097. who

  2098. had

  2099. been

  2100. present

  2101. perhaps

  2102. from

  2103. the

  2104. time

  2105. of

  2106. his

  2107. arrest

  2108. but

  2109. certainly

  2110. present

  2111. at

  2112. the

  2113. cross

  2114. he

  2115. has

  2116. come

  2117. to

  2118. the

  2119. conclusion

  2120. that

  2121. this

  2122. man

  2123. has

  2124. been

  2125. punished

  2126. for

  2127. a

  2128. crime

  2129. of

  2130. which

  2131. he

  2132. is

  2133. innocent

  2134. what

  2135. he

  2136. saw

  2137. and

  2138. heard

  2139. convinced

  2140. him

  2141. that

  2142. this

  2143. man

  2144. is

  2145. truly

  2146. righteous

  2147. the

  2148. thief

  2149. who

  2150. was

  2151. brought

  2152. to

  2153. faith

  2154. in

  2155. Christ

  2156. and

  2157. who

  2158. was

  2159. given

  2160. such

  2161. blessed

  2162. assurance

  2163. of

  2164. where

  2165. he

  2166. was

  2167. going

  2168. to

  2169. spend

  2170. eternity

  2171. also

  2172. came

  2173. to a

  2174. similar

  2175. conclusion

  2176. we

  2177. receive

  2178. he says

  2179. to

  2180. his

  2181. fellow

  2182. accused

  2183. the

  2184. due

  2185. reward

  2186. of

  2187. our

  2188. deeds

  2189. but

  2190. this

  2191. man

  2192. has

  2193. done

  2194. nothing

  2195. wrong

  2196. the

  2197. centurion

  2198. would be

  2199. in full

  2200. agreement

  2201. without

  2202. assessment

  2203. he had

  2204. seen

  2205. enough

  2206. to

  2207. convince

  2208. him

  2209. that

  2210. Jesus

  2211. was

  2212. innocent

  2213. he's

  2214. a

  2215. righteous

  2216. man

  2217. what

  2218. he

  2219. saw

  2220. and

  2221. heard

  2222. convinced

  2223. him

  2224. that

  2225. Jesus

  2226. was

  2227. undeserving

  2228. of

  2229. death

  2230. and

  2231. Luke

  2232. tells

  2233. us

  2234. he

  2235. glorified

  2236. God

  2237. how

  2238. did

  2239. he

  2240. glorify

  2241. God

  2242. well

  2243. I'm

  2244. going

  2245. to

  2246. suggest

  2247. by

  2248. merely

  2249. making

  2250. the

  2251. statement

  2252. that

  2253. Jesus

  2254. was

  2255. a

  2256. righteous

  2257. man

  2258. he

  2259. was

  2260. glorifying

  2261. God

  2262. he

  2263. was

  2264. saying

  2265. the

  2266. same

  2267. thing

  2268. as

  2269. God

  2270. says

  2271. about

  2272. his

  2273. own

  2274. son

  2275. you

  2276. remember

  2277. the

  2278. letter

  2279. to

  2280. the

  2281. Romans

  2282. Paul

  2283. speaks

  2284. of

  2285. those

  2286. although

  2287. they

  2288. knew

  2289. God

  2290. they

  2291. did

  2292. not

  2293. glorify

  2294. him

  2295. as

  2296. God

  2297. you

  2298. see

  2299. the

  2300. statement

  2301. that

  2302. the

  2303. centurion

  2304. made

  2305. it

  2306. it

  2307. it

  2308. it

  2309. if I

  2310. can put

  2311. it this

  2312. way

  2313. he

  2314. it

  2315. concurs

  2316. with the

  2317. assessment

  2318. of heaven

  2319. when

  2320. Jesus

  2321. was

  2322. being

  2323. baptized

  2324. at

  2325. Jordan

  2326. remember

  2327. what we

  2328. are told

  2329. this is

  2330. my

  2331. beloved

  2332. son

  2333. in

  2334. whom

  2335. I

  2336. am

  2337. well

  2338. pleased

  2339. here

  2340. is

  2341. one

  2342. who

  2343. was

  2344. supernaturally

  2345. conceived

  2346. in the

  2347. womb

  2348. of the

  2349. virgin

  2350. and

  2351. he

  2352. was

  2353. righteous

  2354. you could

  2355. say he

  2356. was

  2357. righteous

  2358. before he

  2359. came into

  2360. the world

  2361. he was

  2362. righteous

  2363. from the

  2364. womb

  2365. righteous

  2366. as a

  2367. child

  2368. righteous

  2369. as a

  2370. teenager

  2371. righteous

  2372. as an

  2373. adult

  2374. and

  2375. throughout

  2376. all his

  2377. sufferings

  2378. no

  2379. unrighteousness

  2380. of any

  2381. kind

  2382. can be

  2383. found

  2384. in him

  2385. and the

  2386. centurion

  2387. is

  2388. convinced

  2389. on the

  2390. basis

  2391. of what

  2392. he had

  2393. seen

  2394. and heard

  2395. that this

  2396. person

  2397. is not

  2398. on the

  2399. cross

  2400. for the

  2401. sake

  2402. of any

  2403. breach

  2404. of the

  2405. law

  2406. the

  2407. priests

  2408. the

  2409. scribes

  2410. the

  2411. Pharisees

  2412. who had

  2413. condemned

  2414. him

  2415. and were

  2416. gloating

  2417. in his

  2418. death

  2419. were

  2420. being

  2421. challenged

  2422. by the

  2423. testimony

  2424. of the

  2425. centurion

  2426. they were

  2427. putting

  2428. a

  2429. righteous

  2430. man

  2431. to

  2432. death

  2433. was there

  2434. not a

  2435. danger

  2436. that this

  2437. testimony

  2438. would be

  2439. carried

  2440. back

  2441. to the

  2442. years

  2443. of his

  2444. superior

  2445. and ultimately

  2446. to the

  2447. governor

  2448. that an

  2449. injustice

  2450. had been

  2451. done

  2452. that justice

  2453. hadn't been

  2454. served

  2455. well you

  2456. know

  2457. I don't

  2458. know but

  2459. I get

  2460. the impression

  2461. that this

  2462. centurion

  2463. didn't

  2464. care

  2465. about

  2466. that

  2467. he was

  2468. basing

  2469. his

  2470. assessment

  2471. on what

  2472. he had

  2473. seen

  2474. and heard

  2475. and not

  2476. only does

  2477. he by

  2478. his

  2479. testimony

  2480. exonerate

  2481. the

  2482. character

  2483. of Jesus

  2484. but he

  2485. goes even

  2486. further

  2487. truly this

  2488. man

  2489. was the

  2490. son of

  2491. God

  2492. he is

  2493. not now

  2494. justifying

  2495. the character

  2496. of Jesus

  2497. but he is

  2498. setting

  2499. before us

  2500. the identity

  2501. of this

  2502. condemned

  2503. person

  2504. on the

  2505. middle

  2506. cross

  2507. he's

  2508. not

  2509. just

  2510. merely

  2511. a righteous

  2512. man

  2513. he's

  2514. the

  2515. son

  2516. of

  2517. God

  2518. and you

  2519. remember

  2520. how Mark

  2521. begins

  2522. his gospel

  2523. the beginning

  2524. of the

  2525. gospel

  2526. the beginning

  2527. of the good

  2528. news

  2529. of Jesus

  2530. Christ

  2531. the son

  2532. of God

  2533. there would

  2534. be no

  2535. good news

  2536. if Jesus

  2537. Christ

  2538. was just

  2539. a right

  2540. a mere

  2541. man

  2542. even a

  2543. mere

  2544. righteous

  2545. man

  2546. my sins

  2547. and your

  2548. sins

  2549. could never

  2550. be atoned

  2551. for

  2552. by a

  2553. mere

  2554. man

  2555. even a

  2556. righteous

  2557. man

  2558. die

  2559. in our

  2560. place

  2561. we require

  2562. a substitute

  2563. who is

  2564. both God

  2565. and man

  2566. if this

  2567. centurion

  2568. was present

  2569. in Gethsemane

  2570. then he saw

  2571. his display

  2572. of authoritative

  2573. power

  2574. in his trials

  2575. and crucifixion

  2576. he would have

  2577. seen how

  2578. how

  2579. how nobly

  2580. he conducted

  2581. himself

  2582. remember

  2583. how the

  2584. apostle

  2585. Peter

  2586. writes

  2587. of Christ

  2588. who

  2589. committed

  2590. no sin

  2591. nor was

  2592. deceit

  2593. found in

  2594. his mouth

  2595. who

  2596. when he

  2597. was reviled

  2598. did not

  2599. revile

  2600. in return

  2601. when he

  2602. suffered

  2603. he did

  2604. not

  2605. threaten

  2606. but

  2607. committed

  2608. himself

  2609. to him

  2610. who judges

  2611. righteously

  2612. the centurion

  2613. saw Jesus

  2614. during these

  2615. six hours

  2616. on the

  2617. cross

  2618. he saw

  2619. how

  2620. disparagingly

  2621. the chief

  2622. priest

  2623. spoke to

  2624. him

  2625. mocking

  2626. him

  2627. himself

  2628. he cannot

  2629. save

  2630. if he is

  2631. the king

  2632. of Israel

  2633. let him

  2634. come down

  2635. from the

  2636. cross

  2637. and we

  2638. will

  2639. believe

  2640. he trusted

  2641. in God

  2642. let him

  2643. deliver him

  2644. now

  2645. we love

  2646. for he

  2647. said

  2648. I am

  2649. the son

  2650. of God

  2651. he saw

  2652. all of

  2653. that

  2654. it's not

  2655. improbable

  2656. but that

  2657. the first

  2658. thought

  2659. of who

  2660. Christ

  2661. was

  2662. was

  2663. sold

  2664. in the

  2665. garden

  2666. of

  2667. Gethsemane

  2668. other

  2669. thoughts

  2670. followed

  2671. as he

  2672. viewed

  2673. events

  2674. of the

  2675. actual

  2676. crucifixion

  2677. he saw

  2678. as it were

  2679. heaven

  2680. itself

  2681. bearing

  2682. witness

  2683. to what

  2684. was taking

  2685. place

  2686. he saw

  2687. the split

  2688. rocks

  2689. the open

  2690. graves

  2691. did he

  2692. understand

  2693. what these

  2694. things meant

  2695. I don't

  2696. know

  2697. but of

  2698. this

  2699. he was

  2700. convinced

  2701. certainly

  2702. this was

  2703. a righteous

  2704. man

  2705. truly

  2706. this man

  2707. was the

  2708. son of

  2709. God

  2710. that's

  2711. what he

  2712. said

  2713. what did

  2714. he

  2715. see

  2716. and

  2717. hear

  2718. who

  2719. gave

  2720. this

  2721. account

  2722. finally

  2723. how

  2724. does

  2725. that

  2726. speak

  2727. to

  2728. us

  2729. what

  2730. does

  2731. that

  2732. to

  2733. do

  2734. with

  2735. us

  2736. here

  2737. this

  2738. morning

  2739. what

  2740. does

  2741. the

  2742. testimony

  2743. of the

  2744. centurion

  2745. say

  2746. to you

  2747. and me

  2748. well

  2749. can we

  2750. not say

  2751. this

  2752. that we

  2753. have to

  2754. reckon

  2755. with this

  2756. confession

  2757. everything

  2758. in the

  2759. Bible

  2760. supports

  2761. and

  2762. confirms

  2763. the

  2764. accuracy

  2765. of his

  2766. statement

  2767. and

  2768. assessment

  2769. and that

  2770. raises

  2771. another

  2772. question

  2773. if

  2774. Christ

  2775. is

  2776. righteous

  2777. and he

  2778. is

  2779. if

  2780. Christ

  2781. is the

  2782. son of

  2783. God

  2784. and he

  2785. is

  2786. why

  2787. is he

  2788. on the

  2789. cross

  2790. dying

  2791. as an

  2792. unrighteous

  2793. person

  2794. in the

  2795. Roman

  2796. place

  2797. of

  2798. sinners

  2799. could

  2800. God

  2801. not

  2802. protect

  2803. him

  2804. and

  2805. deliver

  2806. him

  2807. could

  2808. God

  2809. not

  2810. have

  2811. defended

  2812. himself

  2813. and

  2814. saved

  2815. himself

  2816. and the

  2817. answer

  2818. to all

  2819. of

  2820. these

  2821. is

  2822. yes

  2823. so

  2824. why

  2825. was

  2826. he

  2827. there

  2828. we

  2829. cannot

  2830. pretend

  2831. to

  2832. ignore

  2833. the

  2834. question

  2835. why

  2836. did

  2837. he

  2838. die

  2839. why

  2840. was

  2841. he

  2842. placed

  2843. on

  2844. the

  2845. cross

  2846. and

  2847. the

  2848. Bible

  2849. answers

  2850. the

  2851. question

  2852. superbly

  2853. Christ

  2854. also

  2855. suffered

  2856. once

  2857. for

  2858. sins

  2859. the

  2860. just

  2861. for

  2862. the

  2863. unjust

  2864. that

  2865. he

  2866. might

  2867. bring

  2868. us

  2869. to

  2870. God

  2871. that's

  2872. the

  2873. biblical

  2874. answer

  2875. why

  2876. did

  2877. he

  2878. die

  2879. the

  2880. cursed

  2881. death

  2882. of

  2883. the

  2884. cross

  2885. it

  2886. was

  2887. for

  2888. sins

  2889. not

  2890. his

  2891. own

  2892. sins

  2893. he

  2894. had

  2895. none

  2896. but

  2897. for

  2898. your

  2899. sins

  2900. and

  2901. mine

  2902. when

  2903. he

  2904. went

  2905. to

  2906. the

  2907. cross

  2908. he

  2909. went

  2910. as

  2911. the

  2912. just

  2913. in

  2914. place

  2915. of

  2916. the

  2917. unjust

  2918. he

  2919. bore

  2920. our

  2921. sins

  2922. our

  2923. pride

  2924. our

  2925. lies

  2926. our

  2927. blasphemy

  2928. our

  2929. sinful

  2930. desires

  2931. he

  2932. died

  2933. the

  2934. just

  2935. one

  2936. for

  2937. those

  2938. who

  2939. were

  2940. unjust

  2941. and

  2942. the

  2943. reason

  2944. that

  2945. the

  2946. Bible

  2947. gives

  2948. us

  2949. this

  2950. that

  2951. he

  2952. might

  2953. bring

  2954. us

  2955. to

  2956. God

  2957. that

  2958. sets

  2959. before

  2960. us

  2961. that

  2962. not

  2963. only

  2964. was

  2965. he

  2966. the

  2967. sole

  2968. sacrifice

  2969. that

  2970. satisfied

  2971. the

  2972. justice

  2973. of

  2974. God

  2975. but

  2976. that

  2977. he

  2978. was

  2979. active

  2980. as

  2981. priest

  2982. and

  2983. bringing

  2984. sinners

  2985. to

  2986. God

  2987. he

  2988. is

  2989. able

  2990. to

  2991. plead

  2992. the

  2993. efficacy

  2994. of

  2995. the

  2996. cry

  2997. of

  2998. the

  2999. shed

  3000. blood

  3001. within

  3002. the

  3003. courts

  3004. above

  3005. oh

  3006. there

  3007. is

  3008. much

  3009. efficacy

  3010. and

  3011. the

  3012. cry

  3013. of

  3014. the

  3015. shed

  3016. blood

  3017. within

  3018. the

  3019. courts

  3020. above

  3021. our

  3022. sins

  3023. are

  3024. as

  3025. a

  3026. huge

  3027. impossible

  3028. mountain

  3029. between

  3030. us

  3031. and

  3032. a

  3033. holy

  3034. God

  3035. we

  3036. require

  3037. to

  3038. have

  3039. that

  3040. obstacle

  3041. removed

  3042. and

  3043. he

  3044. came

  3045. over

  3046. the

  3047. mountains

  3048. of

  3049. our

  3050. sin

  3051. he

  3052. came

  3053. as

  3054. the

  3055. king

  3056. of

  3057. grace

  3058. into

  3059. this

  3060. world

  3061. as

  3062. so

  3063. well

  3064. set

  3065. out

  3066. by

  3067. Mark

  3068. in

  3069. the

  3070. beginning

  3071. of

  3072. his

  3073. gospel

  3074. as

  3075. he

  3076. sets

  3077. before

  3078. us

  3079. the

  3080. heart

  3081. of

  3082. Jesus

  3083. message

  3084. Jesus

  3085. came

  3086. to

  3087. Galilee

  3088. preaching

  3089. the

  3090. gospel

  3091. of the

  3092. kingdom

  3093. of

  3094. God

  3095. and

  3096. saying

  3097. the

  3098. time

  3099. is

  3100. fulfilled

  3101. the

  3102. kingdom

  3103. of

  3104. God

  3105. is

  3106. at

  3107. hand

  3108. repent

  3109. and

  3110. believe

  3111. in

  3112. the

  3113. gospel

  3114. so

  3115. here

  3116. is

  3117. this

  3118. man

  3119. the

  3120. centurion

  3121. a

  3122. non-Jew

  3123. a

  3124. non-disciple

  3125. a

  3126. gentile

  3127. testifying

  3128. to the

  3129. sonship

  3130. and the

  3131. righteousness

  3132. of

  3133. Jesus

  3134. and as

  3135. far as

  3136. I can

  3137. gather

  3138. he is

  3139. the

  3140. only

  3141. person

  3142. praising

  3143. God

  3144. at

  3145. the

  3146. cross

  3147. he

  3148. glorified

  3149. God

  3150. at

  3151. the

  3152. cross

  3153. and

  3154. here

  3155. are

  3156. we

  3157. today

  3158. thousands

  3159. of years

  3160. later

  3161. most of

  3162. us have

  3163. heard about

  3164. Jesus

  3165. Christ

  3166. from

  3167. childhood

  3168. we've

  3169. been

  3170. taught

  3171. about

  3172. his

  3173. identity

  3174. and why

  3175. he died

  3176. on the

  3177. cross

  3178. is it

  3179. true

  3180. this

  3181. morning

  3182. that

  3183. you do

  3184. not

  3185. see

  3186. your

  3187. need

  3188. of

  3189. Christ

  3190. to

  3191. bring

  3192. you

  3193. into

  3194. subjection

  3195. to

  3196. God

  3197. is it

  3198. true

  3199. that

  3200. you

  3201. live

  3202. as if

  3203. you do

  3204. not

  3205. need

  3206. the

  3207. Jesus

  3208. who

  3209. died

  3210. on

  3211. the

  3212. cross

  3213. or are

  3214. you here

  3215. today

  3216. and have

  3217. you been

  3218. reflecting

  3219. on the

  3220. death of

  3221. Christ

  3222. on the

  3223. cross

  3224. did you

  3225. come

  3226. to the

  3227. same

  3228. conclusion

  3229. as the

  3230. centurion

  3231. are you

  3232. praising

  3233. God

  3234. that

  3235. Christ

  3236. came into

  3237. the world

  3238. that he

  3239. was

  3240. crucified

  3241. the

  3242. just

  3243. in the

  3244. room

  3245. of the

  3246. unjust

  3247. or does

  3248. that leave

  3249. you

  3250. totally

  3251. unmoved

  3252. uncaring

  3253. well it

  3254. didn't

  3255. leave this

  3256. man

  3257. this

  3258. hardened

  3259. soldier

  3260. it made

  3261. a deep

  3262. indelible

  3263. impression

  3264. on his

  3265. life

  3266. we don't

  3267. know

  3268. anything

  3269. more

  3270. about

  3271. him

  3272. after

  3273. these

  3274. times

  3275. but what

  3276. we do

  3277. know

  3278. is this

  3279. his

  3280. testimony

  3281. still

  3282. rings

  3283. out

  3284. as he

  3285. assures

  3286. us

  3287. truly

  3288. this

  3289. man

  3290. was

  3291. the

  3292. son

  3293. of

  3294. God

  3295. what

  3296. place

  3297. does

  3298. the

  3299. son

  3300. of

  3301. God

  3302. have

  3303. in

  3304. our

  3305. lives

  3306. this

  3307. morning

  3308. let us

  3309. pray

  3310. oh

  3311. eternal

  3312. God

  3313. we

  3314. thank

  3315. thee

  3316. that

  3317. the

  3318. son

  3319. of

  3320. God

  3321. came

  3322. into

  3323. this

  3324. world

  3325. in

  3326. true

  3327. human

  3328. form

  3329. that

  3330. he

  3331. suffered

  3332. that

  3333. he

  3334. died

  3335. and

  3336. that

  3337. he

  3338. rose

  3339. again

  3340. that

  3341. he

  3342. is

  3343. at

  3344. the

  3345. right

  3346. hand

  3347. above

  3348. a

  3349. prince

  3350. and

  3351. a

  3352. savior

  3353. oh

  3354. grant

  3355. eternal

  3356. one

  3357. that

  3358. we

  3359. might

  3360. share

  3361. with

  3362. the

  3363. centurion

  3364. the

  3365. conviction

  3366. that

  3367. this

  3368. was

  3369. the

  3370. son

  3371. of

  3372. God

  3373. and

  3374. as

  3375. the

  3376. son

  3377. of

  3378. God

  3379. that

  3380. we

  3381. look

  3382. to

  3383. him

  3384. and

  3385. to

  3386. him

  3387. alone

  3388. for

  3389. salvation

  3390. and

  3391. the

  3392. glory

  3393. shall

  3394. be

  3395. thine

  3396. in

  3397. Jesus

  3398. name

  3399. we

  3400. ask

  3401. it

  3402. amen

  3403. let

  3404. us

  3405. conclude

  3406. by

  3407. singing

  3408. to

  3409. God's

  3410. praise

  3411. from

  3412. Psalm

  3413. 149

  3414. page

  3415. 450

  3416. of

  3417. the

  3418. Psalter

  3419. and

  3420. the

  3421. tune

  3422. is

  3423. Gainsborough

  3424. Psalm

  3425. 149

  3426. page

  3427. 450

  3428. of

  3429. the

  3430. Psalter

  3431. praise

  3432. ye

  3433. the

  3434. Lord

  3435. and

  3436. to

  3437. him

  3438. sing

  3439. a

  3440. new

  3441. song

  3442. and

  3443. his

  3444. praise

  3445. in

  3446. the

  3447. assembly

  3448. of

  3449. his

  3450. saints

  3451. in

  3452. sweet

  3453. psalms

  3454. do

  3455. he

  3456. raise

  3457. let

  3458. Israel

  3459. in

  3460. his

  3461. maker

  3462. joy

  3463. and

  3464. to

  3465. him

  3466. praises

  3467. sing

  3468. let

  3469. all

  3470. that

  3471. Zion's

  3472. children

  3473. are

  3474. be

  3475. joyful

  3476. in

  3477. their

  3478. king

  3479. oh

  3480. let

  3481. them

  3482. unto

  3483. his

  3484. great

  3485. name

  3486. give

  3487. praises

  3488. in

  3489. the

  3490. dance

  3491. let

  3492. them

  3493. with

  3494. timbrel

  3495. and

  3496. with

  3497. harp

  3498. in

  3499. songs

  3500. his

  3501. praise

  3502. advance

  3503. for

  3504. God

  3505. doth

  3506. pleasure

  3507. take

  3508. in

  3509. those

  3510. that

  3511. his

  3512. own

  3513. people

  3514. be

  3515. and

  3516. he

  3517. with

  3518. his

  3519. salvation

  3520. the

  3521. meek

  3522. will

  3523. beautify

  3524. in

  3525. his

  3526. glory

  3527. excellent

  3528. let

  3529. all

  3530. his

  3531. saints

  3532. rejoice

  3533. let

  3534. them

  3535. to

  3536. him

  3537. upon

  3538. their

  3539. beds

  3540. aloud

  3541. lift

  3542. up

  3543. their

  3544. voice

  3545. let

  3546. us

  3547. sing

  3548. these

  3549. verses

  3550. praise

  3551. ye

  3552. the

  3553. lord

  3554. praise

  3555. ye

  3556. the

  3558. unto

  3559. him

  3560. sing

  3561. a

3610. Give praises in the chance.

3611. Let him with timbrel and with high,

3612. His songs his dreams advance.

3613. For thought of pleasure to make it those

3614. that is for people we.

3615. And here with his salvation,

  3616. the meek will beautify.

3617. And in his glory excellent,

3621. Now may the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ,
